new business in downtown Sioux Falls has introduced the concept of “paint and sip” to the city. At Creative Spirits, guests can sip on wine, beer or soda while an artist walks them through the process of producing their very own acrylic painting to take home. The new business, which just opened last month on Main

There, in addition to the studio on Spirit Lake, they have a thriving mobile business covering northwest and north central Iowa, as well as southwest Minnesota. “The great thing about Creative Spirits is that you don’t have

This is just a fun time to relax and have fun with friends or coworkers.” Clayton says all of the art they feature is original art created by local artists. According to Stephanie Rinne, the business manager for

the Sioux Falls Creative Spirits location, the art industry is expanding here, and Creative Spirits is excited to be part of that. “We hand pick our artists from the area, and they are so talented and passionate about sharing this experience with the Sioux Falls community,” says Rinne, who adds that it only took one class at Creative Spirits Okoboji to get her hooked. “I dove into this paint and sip industry full force, and I think that surprised my parents who both said, ‘I can’t even draw a stick person.’ They were impressed with how simple it was and with the outcome of their paintings. We made fun memories together that day, and I’m excited to be able to help others create their own special memories.” Creative Spirits will outfit you with all the supplies you need for your creation - apron, paint, brushes, easels, and a 16×20 canvas. The artists recommend that guests wear paint friendly clothes. “We are painting with acrylic paints, and it will get on your hands,” says Rinne. “We encourage our guests to not wear expensive clothing or accessories – including purses. for an accident to happen.” At the Main Avenue location, guests can bring in wine, beer, soft drinks or bottled water. “We can provide corkscrews and cups,” she says. Because parties can be booked at other locations, it is important to check with Creative Spirits about any specific instructions regarding alcoholic beverages. On average, classes are about two hours in length, but you want to arrive about 20 minutes early to get checked in and organize your supplies. If you are attending with a group of people, let Creative Spirits know when making your reservation, and they’ll be sure to arrange for you to be seated together. The online calendar provides all the information you need, including class dates and times, the featured artwork for the class and class fees. The calendar shows a thumbnail of the selected art piece for each session, such as White Freesia, Five Trees, Sunny Poppies and even a friendly, frog prince called Toad-ally in Love – a special kids event feature.

Recent comments from participants called Creative Spirits “a blast,” “a great day with friends,” and “the best thing I have done for myself in a long time.” You register and pay online to reserve your spot. If it is the day of the event and you haven’t registered in advance, you can call (605) 360-7342 to see if there is space available. If an event is full, you can put yourself on a waiting list using the online registration page. Creative Spirits will then email you if space becomes available. “Creative Spirits is a unique entertainment experience,” says Clayton. “In addition to attending a class at the studio, it’s a great idea for birthday parties, bridal showers, team-building events with coworkers – or any other occasion you can think of.” With the mobile business around Okoboji, Clayton says they take a painting party to other communities in the area. She hopes they will be able to bring that same service to communities in the Sioux Falls area. Grab some friends and schedule a time to unleash your Creative Spirits!

The Happy Dog Walker By Mary Michaels
T
hey say that a dog is a man’s best friend. But in the case of The Happy Dog Walker, it may just be the other way around. Jesse Christen started this business just over a year ago, and found his true calling after deciding he was tired of “corporate life.” “I’m a lifelong dog enthusiast,” says Christen. “And when it comes to finding a job, people always say ‘do something you love,’ so I decided to try it.” While it was certainly a leap of faith to leave his job to start his own venture, he says he hasn’t regretted it once. “It is rewarding to be doing something that I’m really passionate about as well as something that is so good for the dogs.” Dogs need exercise on a regular basis to stay healthy, happy and well behaved, explains Christen. “Many behavior problems can be corrected with regular exercise,” he says. “Plus you can help avoid health issues, just the way exercise helps improve health in humans. Giving your pets exercise helps ensure a longer, happier life.” Lack of exercise can lead to obesity, poor muscle tone, heart disease and bone and joint problems (sound familiar,

human readers?). Not getting enough activity can also lead to emotional problems like boredom barking, anxiety and destructive behavior. “Many of my clients have seen a noticeable difference in their pets after several short weeks of regular exercise.” One such canine was Winston, an English Bulldog. Prior to joining The Happy Dog Walker, Winston was overly energetic to the point where it was a challenge for his owners. Winston was able to channel his energy through regular walks with Christen. Duke, a Rottweiler mix, also benefited from regular walks. He had a weight problem, and through his time with Christen, Duke lost 12 pounds. Unfortunately, Duke was diagnosed with Lupus and recently passed away. Christen misses his friend. “I truly love all of these dogs. I think I enjoy the walking even more than they do.” On a busy day, Christen will cover four or five miles, walking each dog individually, unless the owners request otherwise. The Happy Dog Walker website lists all of the services Christen offers, and the fees. For example, he offers a short walk (25 minutes) or an extended walk (45 minutes), play time
(same times as the walks), yard cleaning, and even in-home pet setting. “That’s probably one of the more popular services,” says Christen. “When people go on vacation, they like an alternative to a kennel. They like to have their pets be able to stay at home.” For pet sitting, Christen can make multiple visits to the house to ensure the pets are getting food and water, exercise, medications if needed and, most important, companionship. He says he does have some clients who have him stay all night with their pet. Christen is fully insured and does not charge for cancellations. He has references available upon request, and he is a member of Pet Sitter Associates, LLC. He’ll gladly provide quotes for other services, like taking a dog to the vet, or for providing services to communities surrounding Sioux Falls. You’ll see The Happy Dog Walker around town all year-round. “I love what I do,” says Christen. “I’ve made some great friends along the way, too, both four-legged and human!” Give The Happy Dog Walker a call. Your dog will love it….no bones about it!

Home is Where the Ballpark Is – Canaries Return to Sioux Falls by John Nichols
I
t’s an understatement to say modern life is busy. Every new day presents its own untamed sea of appointments, obligations, destinations, and distractions. Sometimes the best part of each day is when we return to the place where the whole thing started - home. The Sioux Falls Canaries can relate. After nearly a century as Sioux Falls’ minor league baseball team, the ballclub came under new ownership in 2010. Looking to rebrand the franchise, the team changed its name to the Pheasants. The move was well intentioned but alienated long-time fans that knew and loved the Canaries name and history. Over the next three seasons, the team had some success, but the issue with the name lingered on. “It seemed like it still came up in a lot of conversations we had with fans and sponsors,” said Nate Welch, Canaries Vice President of Operations, “It

wasn’t so much a matter of disliking the Pheasants name, but more like they just didn’t accept it. We’d hear, ‘they’re still the Canaries to me,’ a lot, and eventually making the change back just seemed like the right thing to do.” After months of internal discussions and meetings with fans and sponsors, the announcement was made - the Canaries name would return in 2013 – reconnecting the team and its fans to a history that runs all the way back to 1889. “More than other sports, baseball seems to resonate with people’s sense of history and tradition,” explained Welch. “They remember going to games as kids and those memories stay with them as they grow up and have kids of their own. People cherish those memories and even if they aren’t big fans of the sport, they remember time spent with their parents or grandparents. That connection to the past was something that got overlooked when

the change was made to Pheasants. But the community spoke, we listened, and now we hope people feel like we made it right” Making it right for the fans does not end just with a name change for Welch and the Canaries. “Our theme this year is ‘Welcome Home’ and those two words really capture the sentiment on a lot of levels. We certainly want to welcome people back who may have been put off by the Pheasants name, but we also want to extend the invitation to everyone to come home and enjoy the timeless fun that comes from a day at the ballpark.” Indeed in today’s world, where our time and attention are

pulled in a dozen different directions and quality time with friends and family is always too short, the idea of a sunny afternoon or warm summer evening spent at the Birdcage seems downright luxurious. “The best part about coming to our games is that the experience can be whatever you want it to be,” noted Welch. “If you are a diehard baseball fan, fantastic, our league offers a very high level of play and we think you’ll like the team we’ve put together. If you are looking for a family outing, we have a great lineup of fun day-to-day and special events for the kids; and if it’s date night or a night out with your friends, we have lots of great specials on food and drink.” The Canaries commitment to change and creating a welcoming environment will also extend to the stadium itself. The Birdcage will undergo expected changes to accommodate its new/old nickname but there will also be plenty of new things for fans to get excited about. “The beauty of how our stadium is set up is that it allows fans to enjoy the game however they like. If you have young kids, they can enjoy the bounce houses located all around the park or even play catch on the open grass areas. The barbecue deck provides a great place for folks having a night out, and if you want to host more of a formal get-together, the suites provide an ideal setting.” Welch also said fans will be happy to see the return of the Little Birds youth cheer squad for Tuesday and Thursday games. The in-game experience will also be enhanced with the addition of the Canaries Dance team, who will help bring energy to the park and assist with activities and promotions. “We’ve got a great summer planned and we’re just very excited to share this with the fans,” said Welch. “It’s been a long journey to get here, but I think I speak for everybody when I say it’s good to be back.” And for Sioux Falls’ fans, the return of the Canaries provides yet another chance to root for the home team like so many generations have done before.

Capturing Life S.D. Artist Crafts Memories in Bronze by Jolene Loetscher | Photos by paul schiller

cience may say time does not stop. But art can do what science may consider impossible — capturing the memories of life and creating a moment in time to last forever. And sculptor Sherri Treeby of Aberdeen holds time in her hands. “I believe that we’re put on this earth for a reason. I think it comes natural to me and it’s what I’m supposed to do. I think my purpose in this life is to do this artwork and it touches people when they need it,” says Treeby, 61. An Ohio native, Treeby came to South Dakota 30 years ago. A few years later at a sculpture class at Northern State University she met Lee Leuning. “I started helping him and he helped me. We started working together and he said, ‘Hey, I think we can sell this stuff,’” Treeby adds. Before that, Treeby says she knew she wanted to share her art, but didn’t know what path this passion of hers would take. “I was open to anything. I knew I wanted to get my artwork out there.” Leuning and Treeby started working together, first as Bad River Artworks, now Legacy Bronze. “If you have a passion then you’ll do what it takes to be successful. I teach that to my kids.” Treeby and Leuning started with sculptures inspired by wildlife, utilizing Leuning’s past as a game warden and Treeby’s love of animals, especially horses. Then they added Americana, expanding their art influence along with their exposure to the public by joining SculptureWalk. “We were skeptical at first since we hadn’t had much luck with galleries. But we thought, ‘why not?’” says Treeby. Kicking off its tenth year in May, SculptureWalk brings dozens of original sculptures to downtown Sioux Falls to be displayed, with more than 300,000 people visiting each year.
“It’s a destination! People have relatives come to town or business associates, it’s obvious they show them SculptureWalk. It brings business to downtown,” says Treeby. It also brings business to artists taking part. Treeby credits SculptureWalk with helping their sales, even leading to their biggest job. And helping other artists. “Artists aren’t known for being great marketers and I’ve seen a lot of artists that are really good and don’t get recognized because they don’t know how to market it,” she says. For Treeby, who’s also an art teacher on sabbatical right now from Aberdeen Central High School, it allows visitors to Sioux Falls to see the world, “It brings different kinds of art to Sioux Falls, especially for its size and everybody gets to see what’s out there in the world.” And this year, SculptureWalk adds the SculptureWalk Expo, a free indoor sculpture show at the Washington Pavilion. Open May 4, 12p.m.-10p.m. and May 5, 12-4p.m., more than 250 sculptures will be on display and available to purchase. The public can also take part in seminars hosted by artists. It’s the same weekend new pieces for the outdoor element of SculptureWalk will be installed. “I am excited for the future of this. It’s started a movement across the country and I hope to continue growing and getting our stuff out there,” says Treeby. In March, Treeby opened a studio in downtown Sioux Falls and next year, will work full-time as a sculptor. In the meantime, she’s focusing on SculptureWalk. She says, “SculptureWalk opened up the market to other things and things that touch people so we tell stories with our artwork.” Stories that can stop time.

or newlyweds Anthony and Katie Hohn, it was love at first sight. The story-and-a-half house in central Sioux Falls had just gone on the market. They made their offer the same day they looked at it. “Maybe it sounds cheesy,” says Katie, “but we just felt at
home right away. We knew this was our house.” Built in 1936, the house is a great combination of “old” character with a few new updates. A brick pathway leads to the front door, and when you step inside, you immediately feel the Hohns’ warm, inviting personality. “We are pretty laid back,” says Katie, “not really modern at

furniture, color-block drapes and other accessories. “I’m not really a bright color kind of person,” admits Katie. With so many windows in the house, all of that natural light adds the brightness we like.” The windows, by the way, are original, with multiple divided

enclosed area with a brick fireplace attached to the kitchen. “These areas are great for our summer gatherings,” says Anthony. A small den on the main floor is another nice area to relax. A built-in bookcase painted in the same light cream color spans the length of one wall. Katie is a self-proclaimed “sentimentalist,” so the shelves are filled with pictures, and special keepsakes like a picture painted by a friend and an angel figurine Katie’s brother gave her when they were young. “My dad passed away when we were young,” she explains. “My brother made this when he was like in the 5th grade. He made it look like our dad.” Anthony is an attorney, so other shelves hold his antique law books. He also has a brother who travels extensively and finds unique mementos for them, like a carved figurine from Mozambique. While the kitchen has a slightly-modernized look with stainless appliances and brushed silver hardware on the cabinetry, the distressed black finish on the cupboards is true to the character

of the house and the neutral-with-black color scheme. But just like in all the other rooms, the sentimental side comes shining through with a refrigerator filled with the photos of their friends’ children or their family members like Anthony’s grandpa. “He’s 94 years old and at the VA,” says Anthony. “He was in the Air Force and was shot down over Poland during World War II, and he spent a year and a half as a POW there.” Anthony said he had just gotten a call that the VA featured his grandfather on their Facebook page. Aside from being sentimental and a fan of more neutral colors, Katie also confesses she’s a candy fiend as she stands near a candy plate that sits on the kitchen counter. “There’s candy in nearly every room of the house,” she says. “Everyone jokes that I’m never more than an arm’s length away from it.” The family room off the kitchen features comfortable sofas, an oversized ottoman and a rustic wood built-in with storage space that serves as their TV stand. Matching wood beams run across the ceiling.

“We probably spend the most time in here,” says Katie. The master bedroom, guest room and full bath are upstairs and have a unique look created by the angles of the roof. Anthony and Katie’s room has a small built-in window seat on one side of the room and a little reading nook on the opposite side. Although the cream color provides the neutral base for the room, there are hints of a pretty light blue in the distressed, crackle-painted dresser and the floral fabrics of the chair in the reading nook and throw pillows on the bed. Not having grown up with sisters, Anthony had a little adjusting to do with all the girly stuff in the house, says Katie, like the small table filled with jewelry and nail polish in the bathroom.

“He was more of a minimalist when I met him,” she laughs. “And then I came in like a tornado!” Their personalities blend well together, though, both as a couple and as homeowners. They both had an adjustment last year, though, when Laynie joined their family. The yellow lab quickly made herself at home, and she even has her own basket of toys that sits beneath the long black accent table near the front door. The Hohns love their home, their family with Laynie and being in a friendly neighborhood. “Whenever someone needs help shoveling or anything else, there are neighbors right there to help,” says Anthony. “It’s great because everyone watches out for each other.”

Hunger is Not a Game By Jim Mathis
A
s I’m writing this it’s Sunday morning, I’ve got a full stomach from big French toast breakfast and I know that later today I will fire up the grill and cook a lovely rack of lamb. I’ll also grill some asparagus and make a nice mushroom risotto. My fridge is full, and so is the pantry. And if I discover that I desire something I don’t already have, I can jump in my car and go the store and stock up. For most of you reading this, the situation is probably the same. For us, hunger means we’re just a few minutes from our next meal. When our stomachs feel a little empty, our biggest concern is whether we’ll eat an apple or a bag of Cheetos. Unfortunately, not everyone in the Sioux Empire knows where their next meal is coming from or when they will eat. In our prosperous city, thousands of people, many of them children, are going hungry. While the recession didn’t hit South Dakota as
badly as other areas of the country, there are still large numbers of families without enough to eat. Yes, three of the counties in South Dakota rank among the poorest in the country, but hunger is not isolated to those areas. Hunger is right here, perhaps right in your own neighborhood. Of the developed countries of the world, the US ranks 23 in food security. Just because we don’t see hunger each day doesn’t mean the problem isn’t there. It is, and it is a real problem. According to Feeding South Dakota, our state’s leading organization working to eliminate hunger, one out of every eight South Dakotans is food insecure. But the really sad thing is that percentage is significantly higher for children. Twenty percent or one in every five in our state under the age of 18 doesn’t know where they will get their next meal. Think about that for a minute, a lot of kids are going hungry.

Often, that next meal for a child is coming from school; nearly 40% of the state’s school-aged children qualify for free and reduced meals. The Backpack Program from Feeding South Dakota sends kids home from school with food to eat on weekends and holidays. The kids get nutritious, easy-toprepare foods, distributed through the schools so they have easy access in a safe environment. Each week, Feeding South Dakota distributes about 3,400 packages of food to children in the Sioux Falls and nine surrounding communities, statewide that number is more than 5,000 and they can’t reach every child in need. What about food stamps? Doesn’t that solve the problem? Well I know what I spend on groceries every week and the average of $4.28 a day you can get from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) won’t cover my breakfasts. What

about school lunches? Did you know the average government reimbursement for school lunches today is about the same as it was in 1973? I’m not talking about some mythical number after inflation, dollar for dollar, school lunches today cost about the same as they did in the early seventies, yet the price of food has gone up dramatically. Why am I writing about this now? I’ve done some work with Feeding South Dakota and learned firsthand about the problem. And recently Cinema Falls screened a film called A Place at the Table, a beautifully produced documentary that shines a light on the issue of food insecurity in America. That really opened my eyes. So what can you and I do to help? Well first of all, we can support charities like Feeding South Dakota and the Backpack Program, The Banquet and others. One group that really blows me away is Food to You. They operate a mobile food pantry to bring food directly to those in need while protecting their dignity. These groups are working every day to make food available to those who need it. But charity isn’t enough. As Jeff Bridges said in A Place at the Table “If another country was doing this to our kids, we would be at war.” What else can we do? Write our congress people and let them know that a Farm Bill that subsidizes corporate farms isn’t enough. We need to expand food programs, improve school lunches and make sure that families have access to fresh healthy food. While you’re at it, watch A Place at the Table. It’s got a few faces you’ll recognize like Jeff Bridges (yes, The Dude from The Big Lebowksi) and Tom Colicchio from Top Chef. It should be available on demand from the cable company or it will be on Netflix soon. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and eat something good today. And be grateful you’ve got something to eat.
When he’s not cooking, writing or thinking about food, Jim runs ADwërks, and ad agency in uptown Sioux Falls.

Wines with little to no aging potential:
H
appy Mother’s Day to all of you moms out there. My wish for you is that you are appreciated by your loved ones. Whether it’s a homemade card (the kind that has more glue than sparkles) from your kindergartner, or a mouse pad with your four kids on it, there’s nothing like getting something from the people to whom you give everything. Every year, I take our three boys to Color Me Mine, and we create a unique piece of pottery with their handprints on it. She has everything from a cookie jar to a serving platter to a piggy bank on which she can see our kids’ hands grow year after year…my wife has trained me well! Thank you to Marybeth, and all moms, for giving unconditionally. When it comes to wine, there’s a certain amount of “mothering” that is involved, especially if you’re a collector of fine wines. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is how to know what wines are worth aging and how do you store or “mother” these wines. Here is a rough guideline for determining which wines you come across are in need of a good guardian.

Please keep in mind that this is a very rough guide to aging wines. There are so many variables that it is always wise to consult the wine store, wine representative, or broker from whom you are purchasing the wine. The ratio of sugars, acids, and phenolics to water is a key factor of how well a wine can age. The less water in the grapes prior to harvest, the more likely the resulting wine will have some aging potential. Grape variety, climate, vintage, and viticultural practice are all important. Here’s a good rule of thumb: Grape varieties with thicker skins, from a dry growing season where little irrigation was used and yields were kept low, will have less water and a higher ratio of sugar, acids, and phenolics. These make fantastic wines to adopt into your wine cellar. When it comes to mothering your wines, storage conditions can influence a wine’s aging ability dramatically. Vibrations and heat fluctuations can hasten a wine’s deterioration and cause adverse effect on the wines. In general, a wine has a greater potential to develop complexity and more aromatic bouquet if it is allowed to age slowly in a relatively cool environment. The lower the temperature, the more slowly a wine develops. On average, the rate of chemical reactions in wine doubles with each 18 °F increase in temperature. Wine expert Karen MacNeil, recommends keeping wine intended for aging in a cool area with a constant temperature around 55°F. Wine can be stored at temperatures as high as 69°F without long term negative effect. However, most experts believe that extreme temperature fluctuations (such as repeated transferring of a wine from a warm room to a cool refrigerator) would be detrimental to the wine. The ultra-violet rays of direct sunlight should also be avoided because of the free radicals that can develop in the wine and result in oxidation. Wines packaged in large format bottles, such as magnums and 3 liter Jeroboams, seem to age more slowly than wines packaged in regular 750 ml bottles or half bottles. This may be because of the greater proportion of oxygen exposed to the wine during the bottling process. The advent of alternative wine closures to cork, such as Stelvin closures (screw caps) and synthetic corks has opened up recent discussions on the aging potential of wines sealed with these alternative closures. Currently, there are no conclusive results, and the topic is the subject of ongoing research. And since we’re on the topic of mothers, there are probably some mothers-to-be out there who are taking a 9-month sabbatical from drinking wine. Their palate no longer enjoys a glass of Pinot Noir with dinner, instead it has been replaced with morning sickness and heart burn. Wine goes through this stage too! Known as bottle sickness or “bottle-shock,” one of the short-term aging needs of wine is a period where the

“When it comes to mothering your wines, storage conditions can influence a wine’s aging ability dramatically. Vibrations and heat fluctuations can hasten a wine’s deterioration and cause adverse effect on the wines. wine is considered “sick” due to the trauma and volatility of the bottling experience. During bottling, some oxygen is exposed to the wine, causing a domino effect of chemical reaction with various components of the wine. The time it takes for the wine to settle down and have the oxygen fully dissolve and integrate with the wine is considered its period of “bottle shock”. If you haven’t seen the movie Bottle Shock, you’re missing out on a great movie all about Chateau Montelena making history for Napa Valley wines. It’s never too late to start a wine collection…all it takes is one good bottle. Here’s a quick tip on how to get started: try to find 2007 Napa Valley Cabernets as they are being heralded as being a part of one of the best vintages in a long time. Get one. Get two! My first was a 1997 Barbaresco; what’s yours going to be? And remember what one of my favorite comedians, Robin Williams, said in the movie Nine Months, “If it’s not one thing, it’s your mother.” Carpe Vino! Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway
title
Six Drives to Remember
by Jessica Weischedel
Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway The Historic Columbia River Highway has indescribable beauty and magnificence, with its grand landscape and amazing colors and sounds, most visitors have a priceless experience. Located in the state of Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, the wildflower displays are superb, as well as wonderful overlooks providing views of waterfalls including Multnomah Falls. There is also a very rich history behind it all. There is no wonder this Byway has been called “King of Roads”. Where to Stop: Don’t miss the Lewis and Clark Trail, where several historic sites mentioned in the journals can still be seen. The Bonneville Dam is another significant thing to see, which raised the water significantly when the face of the Gorge began to change dramatically in 1933. Plenty of fish species can be seen from the dam’s fish viewing station.

The Road to Hana
some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the West, this byway goes through open areas with meadows and forests that change shapes along the way. Included in this is the popular mountain towns of Durango, Silverton, Telluride, and Ouray. In 2012, Travel + Leisure named Sky Juan Skyway one of “America’s Best Spring Drives” for its million dollar views. Where to stop: The town of Durango includes several awesome walking tours including saloons, the Strater Hotel, and historic homes in the Queen Anne Spanish Colonial revival styles. The national historic landmark, Durango and Silverton narrow Gauge Railroad, gives visitors a scenic steam locomotive experience through the San Juan Mountains.

Hana is a very small town on the northeastern end of Maui, which is Hawaii’s second largest island. With a reputation of being absolutely gorgeous, this highway is meant for the adventurous tourist. The scenery changes dramatically no matter what part of the road you are one, and no matter what speed you are going. Where to stop: Wailua Falls is one of many waterfalls along this route. At mile marker 12, stop for an amazing view of the zigzagging highway and Honomanu Bay. Halfway to Hana, detour down Nahiku road and end up at a wide open grassy area ending at a cliff. At the end of Hana Highway is the ‘Ohe’ o Gulch, also known as the “Seven Sacred Pools”. It is a series of waterfalls and pools that are located inside the Haleakala National Park.

The Dalton Highway Located in Alaska, this road carves a path through forest to ocean and in between. This road is a mostly gravel road often traveled via 18-wheelers. It was once featured on History Channel’s show, Ice Road Truckers. However, some of North America’s most dramatic scenery exists within this highway. Where to stop: Fairbanks is Alaska’s interior, with its restaurants and gently rolling streams, it’s a great starting point for your road trip adventures. Yukon River is included within a stretch of the highway, with sightings of grizzly and black bears, as well as large herds of caribou crossings. wenty-four-year-old Jordan Morgan considers herself an ordinary, healthy young woman. Growing up “in God’s country,” her story is typical of life in Minnesota: off to the cabin on the weekends for skiing, fishing and fun in the sun. So five months ago when Jordan, a registered nurse at Sanford Tracy, was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, she realized her life wasn’t so typical after all. “I was planning my wedding and working hard as a new nurse,” says Jordan. “I happened to take a break on duty to stretch my arms above my head. That’s when my colleague and guardian angel Physician Assistant Danette Ronnfeldt sounded the alarm bells.” Danette noticed a suspicious mole on the back of Jordan’s arm and said: “I don’t like the way that looks. You need to get that checked out.” Jordan made an appointment right away. Pathology results brought her bad news: It was cancer. “Like most young adults, I didn’t think cancer could happen
to me,” Jordan recalls. Follow-up tests with Sanford Dermatologist Dr. Jacob Kusmak indicated her condition was serious, as the melanoma was beginning to extend into the dermis layer of Jordan’s skin. Surgery and follow-up care were a must. “I had absolutely no symptoms other than the visible mole on my arm,” says Jordan, who also had a history of indoor tanning, an activity Dr. Kusmak says can accelerate skin cancer growth.
Who is most at risk of developing skin cancers? “Those with the highest risk include people with a family history of skin cancer, light skin, chronic sun exposure, history of sunburns, and especially history of indoor tanning,” says Dr. Kusmak. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will develop a skin cancer. “One American dies of melanoma almost every hour in this country,” Dr. Kusmak say. “And cases of melanoma are increasing, especially in young Caucasian women. It’s alarming.”

Sun and Skin Safety Tips Dr. Kusmak recommends the following tips: • Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen • Broad spectrum UVB and UVA sunscreen • Smear, slather or spray-on – “Use any type of sunscreen, just find one you will use regularly,” says Dr. Kusmak. • Reapply at least every two hours • Seek shade and cover your skin. Especially peak hours of the day: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. • Wear wide-brim hats and protective clothing
Skin Self-Exams “The best way to identify skin cancer early is to self-examine your skin regularly; usually once a month,” says Dr. Kusmak. Check skin for unusual spots and use the following ABCDE guideline: A – Asymmetric – any spot that has one side different than the other side B – Borders – any spot with irregular or uneven borders C – Colors – spots with three or more different colors D – Diameter – bigger than the size of a pencil eraser head E – Evolving – the most important clue – any spot that is changing

Cherishing Life Dr. Kusmak and his team successfully treated Jordan’s cancer, and he hopes that others will be as diligent and get suspicious skin spots checked out right away. “Jordan is not unlike many other younger women in our region,” he says. “On an average day in the US, more than 1 million people (mostly women) tan in tanning salons. She was very fortunate to have it treated early.” Today, Jordan’s “ordinary” perspective on life is more focused on what matters most: health. She’s not tanning indoors or outdoors anymore either; a direct order from Dr. Kusmak. “We discussed that it is imperative that she stops tanning, that she regularly performs self skin-exams at least monthly, and that she follows the Sun and Skin Safety Tips,” he says. “We also recommended that her immediate family get checked.” Jordan requires regular skin cancer exams for the rest of her life and urges others to get checked, too. A scar on her arm acts as a reminder. “If you don’t have your health, you have nothing. My scar reminds me of just how precious life and your health truly are.” For questions or to set up an exam with a dermatologist, visit sanfordhealth.org.

t is spring year-round in Ava Redmond’s room. Three pink walls and one green wall provide the backdrop for a room with just the right amount of “girly-ness.” Flowers in alternating pinks, browns and greens adorn the walls, the bedding and a unique measuring stick that will mark Ava’s growth each year. The brown “stem” of the measuring stick and the flowers attached to it were created by Traci Redmond’s brother. Matching wooden flowers seem to float on the wall above Ava’s crib. “He cut out all those pieces and I painted them,” says Traci smiling. “That was lot of painting.” The first milestone is already written by year one, and Ava’s height will be recorded again in June when she turns two. The springy color scheme came from the bedding Traci and husband Spencer found, and then Traci’s mom made a coordinating quilt complete with colorful butterflies, Ava’s name and birthdate. That quilt is draped over the comfy recliner in the room that is always ready for snuggle time. You can tell that the chair is a favorite spot in the room, because there is a book-filled shelf next to it, and Ava’s little Minnie Mouse slippers are there on the floor. The white woodwork and furniture in the room really make the wall colors pop, and other little accents add to the character of the room. A little lamp with a pink jeweled lamp shade sits on

the white table next to the recliner. Green drapes with a subtle circle pattern hang against one of the pink walls. “It’s kind of amazing we found curtains that matched the right shade of green,” Traci says. The valance that came with the curtains was put to use elsewhere in the room. Since it had a floral pattern that complemented the wooden flowers on the wall and the flowers in Ava’s bedding, Traci used it as a runner across the tall, white bookshelf in the corner. Above that bookshelf hangs a plaster cast of Ava’s hand - a white square with a tiny pink hand in its center. More books fill the shelves, along with a captivating canvas print of Ava as a baby with a larger-than-life toothless grin. This room will be a great book-filled sanctuary where Ava can find her own space once a new arrival joins the family later this year.

Breast is Best
Human milk is ‘liquid gold’ for newborns By Donna Farris, for Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center

ecause it’s clearly the best food for newborns, experts strongly recommend breastfeeding – especially for preemies or babies born with health issues. “A growing body of medical literature indicates that breast is best,” said Dr. Katherine Wang, neonatologist at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, and a new mom. “Breast milk is like medicine that no one else can replicate. We treat it like liquid gold. We encourage breastfeeding whenever possible, whether the baby is premature and sick, or full term and healthy.” Human breast milk is so beneficial that in 2012, Avera McKennan became the first hospital in South Dakota to offer donor breast milk. “Human breast milk is so beneficial that in 2012, Avera McKennan became the first hospital in South Dakota to offer donor breast milk. Donor milk is made possible when a nursing mother anywhere in the country donates breast milk and sends it to a (HMBANA) Human Milk Banking Association of North America certified milk bank. All donor milk is pooled, pasteurized and tested to ensure it is safe for infants.” Human Milk Banking Association of North America certified milk bank. All donor milk is pooled, pasteurized and tested to ensure it is safe for infants. Donor milk from a HMBANA milk bank is offered to mothers of NICU infants at Avera McKennan in situations where the mother is establishing her breast milk supply, or has difficulty establishing or maintaining her milk supply. “Donors are rigorously screened, and the milk is tested and completely safe,” said Kelli Fagerness, RN, Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, at Avera McKennan. There is no charge to the family for the donor milk while the baby is a NICU patient. Parents have the option of purchasing it on their own from a HMBANA bank after discharge. Breastfeeding has many benefits, including convenience and

lower cost. Breastfeeding moms experience a reduced cancer risk, and may lose pregnancy weight faster. But the greatest benefit is the health of the baby. Research shows that human milk contains a unique and powerful combination of nutrients important for infant health. Mother’s milk supports growth and development, and boosts the baby’s ability to fight infection. It is easy to digest and can promote overall health of the baby’s digestive system. “NICU babies on breast milk grow faster, are more likely to reach developmental milestones at the appropriate times, and are discharged from the hospital sooner,” Fagerness added. Breastfed babies typically experience fewer ear infections and respiratory infections, including colds and viruses. “Studies also

point to possible benefits in neurodevelopment,” Dr. Wang said. Preterm babies are at risk for a disease known as NEC – necrotizing enterocolitis. This infection and inflammation of the bowel affects only about 1 to 5 percent of NICU babies, yet it’s very serious. “If babies get it, the mortality is as high as 50 percent,” Dr. Wang said. Breast milk reduces the chance of NEC by 79 percent. “If there’s anything we can do to prevent it, we take that opportunity.” Studies are still being conducted on whether or not pasteurized breast milk still contains all the immunity and infection-fighting benefits offered by fresh breast milk straight from the mother provides, Dr. Wang said. But donated breast milk is the next best thing, because it’s easier to digest and tolerate than formula. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about six months, and then continuation of breastfeeding for one year or longer. Due to her medical training, Dr. Wang said she was committed to breastfeeding herself as a new mom. “Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s easy,” Dr. Wang said. “It can be frustrating until you work with your baby and get the mechanics down.” She advises finding helpful resources, such as a lactation
consultant, peer group, support group or just a friend or family member who has experience with breastfeeding. “You need someone you can call anytime of the day, because sometimes things are their worst at 2 a.m. when it’s just the two of you, your baby won’t latch on and you’re at your wit’s end.” Some breastfeeding moms fear their babies are not taking in enough milk. It’s often reassuring to bring your baby in before breastfeeding, and have the baby weighed before and after the feeding. Also, if the baby has plenty of wet diapers, you can be assured that he or she is getting adequate milk. It’s not unusual for breastfed babies to have fewer dirty diapers than formulafed infants. Dr. Wang advises new moms to realize that breastfeeding and pumping is a learning process. “Keep working through it, and reach out if it’s not going well. Once both you and your baby get the hang of it, it’s really fun and a great bonding experience with your baby,” Dr. Wang said. To learn more about pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, go to AveraWomens.org. To learn more about donor breast milk, call the Avera McKennan Lactation Consultants at 605-322-4490.

awesome apps
I was very impressed by this app for a number of reasons. The app, Which Go Together, helps teach children to make associations between common, everyday objects. For example four, very well done pictures are shown on the screen and the voice will ask, “which go together?” There might be a suitcase, a watermelon, a mouse and an airplane. When children click on the two correct pictures, the voice will not only compliment them for doing a good job, but will also give a great, short explanation of why they are correct. If a child clicks two pictures that are not correct, the voice will simply say, “try again” in addition the four cards will reshuffle. This app is formatted in such a way that it provides almost no distractions for children. There are no pop-ups, goofy music or flashy games that children are redirected to play after getting so many answers correct in a row. There is a tracking device on the app which allows parents or teachers to track progress. It keeps track of the total time that the child has been playing the app, the total questions given and the percent of correct versus incorrect answers.
What’s the Word Games Free The first words that come to my mind when thinking about this game are highly addictive! Two fantastic former students who help me from time to time in my classroom after school, both in 7th grade, asked me if they could download an app on my iPad, and I said sure. I was hooked the first time I played the game, and my students have enjoyed it a tremendous amount too. I have since showed my husband, who is also addicted. This is a very simple game where four pictures will appear on the screen and you have to come up with one word that they all have in common. The game tells you how many letters are in the word, which they all have in common, and also gives you a letter bank to help you spell out your word. For example, there might be a credit card, a piggy bank, a shoreline with trees, and a beach all shown as pictures. The word they all have in common is bank. Each time you get an answer correct you collect coins to add to your bank. Coins can then be used to “buy” helpful hints such as show me another picture, remove letters from the letter bank, or reveal a letter. If you don’t have enough coins to “buy” a helpful hint, the app does sell coins in the app store. $.0.99 will buy you 250 coins. Hints cost either 39 or 59 coins. Some picture combinations are easy, and some are very challenging, which adds great variety to this game.
Brain Quest Educational Free (lite) $2.99 add on packages per grade level Brain Quest is a game that has been around for years and is a favorite of parents and teachers. In my classroom, for years I’ve used the paper version of Brain Quest during short periods of transitional time, a few minutes before lunch, as we wait for the buses, etc. Brain Quest has been over the years one of the best-selling educational games and has recently added an app that is absolutely beautifully designed. As parents are looking for ideas to help keep their children engaged over the summer break, Brain Quest’s new app is a terrific choice. There is a wide variety of questions that encompasses all subject areas for grades first through fifth. The questions are displayed in an easy-to-navigate format that also has a game-like component to keep children engaged. For example, before starting a series of questions, a pop up will let the player know that their goal is to answer 7 questions correctly (the goal would be more for older grades, fewer for younger grades) before the clock runs out. If the player is able to accomplish the mission they can play a “mini-game” before moving onto the next series of questions. The free version of the app offers approximately 100 questions for each grade level. Each grade level has an additional “pack of questions” available for purchase: $2.99 each or $9.99 for all grade levels. The game offers a wonderful balance between challenging children, not only on speed, but accuracy. Another great feature of the app is that as the players advance through the game, the questions become more challenging.

Spa Door Hanger Kids will have fun creating this easy felt pillow door sign for either the bedroom or the bathroom to create some relaxation and privacy for mom. Draw her a well deserved hot bubble bath, and invite her to soak with some soothing music and candlelight, and hang the sign on the door while she indulges. The interchangeable messages can let the family know what sort of mood mom is in, allowing her some peace and quiet or some cuddle time if she wants that instead!
What you need: 3x5 inch index cards, scissors, cotton balls, ruler, fabric glue, felt, pinking shears, and ribbon. (Most can be found at your local craft store)
How to create: Cut two 9x7 inch rectangles of felt in a color of your choice, and one 4x6 inch rectangle of felt in another color. If necessary, trim the edges of the felt with pinking shears. In the 4x6 inch felt, cut a 2x4 inch window from the middle, creating a felt frame. Along the two shorter sides of one of the larger felt pieces, apply fabric glue. Cut a piece of ribbon about 30 inches in length, then lay it on top of the glue lines for a hanger. Leaving about 2 inches of space at the center of the bottom edge, apply more fabric glue along all of the remaining edges of this first larger piece of felt. (The 2 inch edge left without glue will leave room for the added cotton ball stuffing.) Take the second piece of larger felt and set it on top of the first piece, pressing it in place. Now it’s time to add the frame. Apply fabric glue along the sides and bottom of the smaller felt piece, which should now look like a frame, and glue it to the center of the top piece of larger felt. Set aside and allow all of the glue to dry completely. Once dry, stuff the pillow with cotton balls, making sure not to overstuff it, because the notecards will need to lay as flat as they can. Seal the hole with more fabric glue. The last step is an opportunity for the kids to get creative with a few messages to swap in and out of the frame on the pillow. Have them write some cute bath-time, cuddle-time, and relaxation-time messages on 3x5 inch index cards for mom to interchange as she wishes. Some ideas to get you started: “Mommy’s Spa Time”, “Snuggle Zone”, or “Relaxation in Progress”. The possibilities are endless!

Wheel of Affection This unique variation to your average Mother’s Day card will allow your kids to creatively express the many ways they love their mother.
What you need: cardboard, a split pin, scissors, pencil, glue, old magazines, a small plate, and a larger plate.
How to create: Using cardboard in a color of your choice and a pencil, trace around the smaller plate to create a circle shape and cut it out. Do the same with the larger plate onto a different colored piece of cardboard. In the smaller circle, cut out a small window where the words will show when you turn the wheel, so be sure to make it sized to match the words. Above the window, write a phrase that will match each word that shows when the wheel is turned, such as “To me you are...”. Have your kids find words that make them think of their mom, making sure they match the phrase you chose to write on the cardboard, making sure they are equal or smaller than the size of the window and that only one word can be seen at a time. It will help to hold the smaller circle on top in order to test the word’s size. If the kids are feeling extra crafty, they can also cut out various images from the magazine that can fill the cardboard’s empty space. Poke a hole through the center of each wheel, then fasten them in place with the split pin. Once the pin is in place, glue the words into the visible window and test out the wheel as you go. Feel free to decorate the front of the wheel as desired, using mother’s day images and messages, as well as directions on how the wheel should be spun.
Hand Print Framed Photograph Show mom how much you love her with a personalized framed family photo.
What you need: frame, white mat to fit the frame, craft paint in color(s) of your choice, baby wipes, sponge brush, and mom’s favorite family photo in a print size that will fit into the frame.
How to create: paint your kids hands with paint and have them carefully press their handprints onto the white mat in various directions and locations. Let the paint dry completely, then frame the print for display. Add words to your mat if desired, such as a mother’s day quote, the names of the kids who created it, or a simple word that represents love and family.
Mother’s Day “I Love You” Jar Recycle a glass jar to create a personalized Mother’s Day gift that will last for several days after the holiday.
What you need: a glass jar with a lid, a blank white adhesive label, several scraps of paper, ribbon, and crayons or markers.
How to create: find a glass jar with a lid, and place a blank adhesive label onto the outside. Write the phrase you wish to use onto the label. For example, “101 reasons why I love you Mom!” would be one variation of many ways to phrase it. Using the scraps of paper (make sure to have 101 if you go with the suggested phrase), the child can write reasons why they love their mother, then fold them accordion style and place them in the jar.

Books
These are just some of the wonderful books for children we have come across this month. We hope to share with you some you have not seen before and also introduce others being released in the near future. Enjoy.
My Dad Thinks He’s Funny by Katrina Germein When his son says “I’m hungry,” Dad says, “Hello, Hungry. Pleased to meet you.” Before slicing a cake for dessert, Dad announces, “There’s my piece. What’s everybody else having?” Tell Dad your foot hurts? “No problem. You’ve got another.” How is he feeling? “With my hands.” So when nothing’s up but the sky, or when jumping in the shower sounds dangerous, it may be a good time to share this book with someone who doesn’t need sugar because, well, they’re sweet enough already. Ages 5 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewick Press
Bobbo Goes to School by Shirley Hughes It starts out as a regular trip to the store with Mom, but then Lily does a dreadful thing: she flings her beloved stuffed toy, Bobbo, high in the air, only to have him land on top of a school bus just as it’s pulling away! Lily is inconsolable. What if she never sees Bobbo again? Little does she know (though the reader can see) that Bobbo is having an exciting adventure at school -- and will be well cared for until he finds his way back to Lily. Erin Faber—
Expanding the Love of a Mother By Adrienne McKeown
I
have one of those day-by-day flip calendars sitting on my desk. I’m not sure when or where I got it, but it really doesn’t help me keep track of the current date anymore. I decided to stop turning the pages a few years ago, and ever since, it’s been stuck on July 18th. The page is faded and yellowed thanks to the fluorescent lighting of my workplace, but the quote on that particular date is etched in my heart. It’s a quote from Erma Kurtz that says, “Motherhood…is the only love I have known

“Motherhood…is the only love I have known that is expansive and that could have stretched to contain with equal passion more than one object.” — Erma Kurtz
that is expansive and that could have stretched to contain with equal passion more than one object.” It’s a quote that any mother with more than one child can appreciate. But recently, I learned that it doesn’t even matter if the children biologically belong to their mother. A mother’s love can be so encompassing that it will stretch to love children that she didn’t bear. Such is the case with Erin Faber. Erin and her husband Cory have been foster parents for several years, welcoming other people’s children into their home for periods of time and into their hearts forever. Along with their three biological children—Sidney (age 15), Mason (age 13), and Samantha (age 9)—the Fabers also have a three-year-old son named Ty. Ty came to live with Erin and her family as a foster child, but he has since become their adopted son and—as Mason says—a brother from another mother. And aside from Erin’s dark, straight hair and Ty’s blonde, curly hair, one would never guess that they weren’t biologically connected. I sat down with Erin (and Ty) to learn more about how the love of a mother isn’t limited by genetics.
Can you please share with us a little bit about how Ty came into your family? We got Ty when he was two months old. They called and said they had a foster baby, and we said, “Oh, okay,” because we’d been talking about taking a baby. And then they said, “He’s got a cleft palette and a G-tube,” so he was being fed through a tube in his stomach. I said, “Nope, call somebody else.” And for two weeks they kept calling back, and I kept saying that I didn’t think I could do it because I don’t even like Band-Aids. I didn’t think this was the right baby for us. Finally, at the end of two weeks, I asked if we could have him for a shorter period of time, and they actually needed someone to take care of him
for six weeks while another foster parent was away. I decided I had six weeks in me—I could do anything for six weeks—and after five weeks, they called and said he could move back. I was like, “Hmmm, nope. He’s here.” We worked with his biological parents for a year before they terminated their parental rights. Then, we found out right before Christmas that we were going to be able to adopt him, so we gave all of our kids a baby brother for Christmas.
How great! What a special Christmas for your family! So how do your older kids react to having foster kids in the family? They honestly love to have foster kids. In fact, often times they’ll ask, “When do we get another one?” They love when the little ones come. We recently had a little baby for a week, and my nine-year-old just held him the whole week. She helped feed him and change him. She loved it.
What prompted you to want to become a foster parent? It was partially our jobs. Cory is in speech therapy, and he has gone into many foster homes. He came to me one day and said, “Do you want to do this?” I also worked at Children’s Home Society for seven years and one of the jobs I had while I was out there was family therapy for foster families. Samantha was actually a baby when Cory wanted to start fostering, but with a new baby in the house, I wasn’t ready. When she was four, we decided to start the process. It’s about a year-long training and quite a commitment. It has to be a priority.
So after you’ve decided that this is something you’re interested in doing, how do you start the process of becoming a foster parent? Starting the process is pretty simple. The first thing you do

is call the Department of Social Services or call Children’s Home Society to get scheduled for PRIDE training. Then they will get you set up with the training officers.
What are some of the biggest challenges that come with being a foster parent? The first challenge is just opening your mind to making a day-to-day change—figuring out sleeping patterns, their daily routines, where they have to go—on top of figuring out what you have to provide for your own family. I think that’s why a lot of people think they could never do it, but within a couple of weeks or even a couple of days, the kids just fit in. We’ve had really good kids, but a lot of times there may be emotional and behavioral things you have to deal with as well.
That sounds like it could be a lot to take on. What kind of support is available to assist you in dealing with those challenges? The East River Foster Parent Network provides a way for foster parents to talk to each other and support one another, and the network also provides training on different topics of interest to foster parents. There are also professionals at the monthly network meetings who can assist in dealing with the challenges or answering questions. Additionally, the network helps to find supplies like clothing, furniture items, or car seats to assist in caring for foster children. It’s really helpful to have a network that can offer this kind of support.
Absolutely. It sounds like that support would be invaluable. So as we celebrate Mother’s Day and pause to reflect on what it means to be a mom, how has being a foster mom touched your life? It’s taught me a lot about myself. It’s taught me that I can love somebody who’s not mine. You can open your home and love somebody and live with somebody and take care of somebody and make sure they have a better life. You never know if your heart could have that capacity or not. But for me, there is no difference between my kids. You just love them. They are a part of your family.

hat kid of pet doesn’t like camping? It is one of the great things about living in South Dakota. Your favorite spot can be the Missouri River, the Black Hills or any one of the great state parks. But every good Boy Scout knows, “Be Prepared”. The great outdoors are fun, but we need keep our furry friends safe. Bugs bother them, just as much as they do people. Make sure you have applied Parastar or Frontline on a monthly basis to prevent ticks from having a picnic on us or our dogs. These are the strongest and safest products available today, and they are waterproof. If mosquitoes and gnats are pestering your dogs, apply Avon Skin So Soft or Off Skintastic for kids to the inner sides of their ears, armpits and groin before going out. You can apply it 1-2 times a day to decrease the number of bites. Do not use DEET on your furry friends, as it can be poisonous. Canines can be great fishing companions. They will eat lunch with you, take naps and never make fun of your small fish. They can get into a lot of trouble though. Fishhooks and lures are commonly found piercing my patients. And be sure to keep your lunch and tackle box out of their reach. Dogs also enjoy boat rides, but there are times they have left the boat unexpectedly. Several years ago, I witnessed a Dachshund being fished out of the Missouri River with a net. He

was ready to go ashore before the boat reached the dock! If you have a boat dog, a tie down in the boat and a life jacket are always a good idea. They also appreciate some shade on a hot day. The most important thing to take along when camping with a canine companion is a good leash and collar. Almost every traumatic event that occurs to dogs on vacation is when they are off leash. I strongly recommend that the leash be applied before anyone opens the door, even when stopping for gas. It is far too common for pets to be hit by cars or run away once they leave the automobile or camper. Supper and the campfire are my pet’s favorite time of the day. It is so much easier to mooch and beg a taste when I am sitting in a lawn chair. I have to be careful, that I don’t give them anything to make them sick. Stay away from all bones, fat, chicken skin and spicy things. You do not want to spoil a great weekend with a sick pet! Call ahead and make sure the campgrounds are pet friendly. Many private campgrounds will not except pets or may require an additional charge. Many motels and hotels are also not allowing pets to stay. Enjoy your summer and your well deserved vacations. Keep your best friend safe and don’t forget the S’mores.

Cherry Rock Bridge by Bruce Blake
Cherry Rock Bridge Marker location: Sioux Falls at Cherry Rock Park
A
Sioux quartzite ledge, located near this site on the west bank of the north-flowing Big Sioux River, was known to early residents as Cherry Rock. On scorching hot, sultry summer afternoons the more daring used the outcropping as a platform to leap or dive into the deep swimming hole below. Today Cherry Rock is hidden from view, encased by the quartzite block facade of the west end bridge abutment. Historical accounts are in conflict as to whether the rock is red or is pink with several dark red, cherry sized-markings. Cherry Rock Bridge was completed in 1902 by the C. A. Grinde Company. The only bridge ever erected at this river crossing is an elongated rectangular steel bridge almost 192-feet long by 17-feet wide. Built for use by horse-dawn wagons and buggies, it consists of two sections: a Parker Through Truss at its west end and a two-panel Pratt Pony Truss at its west end. The original roadway was a wood plank floor. Cherry Rock Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. DEDICATED IN 1994 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, BETTY BEST, AND THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS.
A “Steamer” Returning From A Trip Up River to Cherry Rock After the Cascade Mill dam was constructed a few yards north of the 8th Street Bridge, a large artificial lake was created. It was deep enough to handle steam-powered excursion launches such as the “Olive” shown here. Image owner: Siouxland Heritage Museums.
