he All Day Café and Goodnight Bar can be described as funky meets farmhouse. There are plenty of windows to let in natural light, but the warm woods and oversized, colorful canvas prints of everything from fruits and vegetables to farm animals – along with the fireplace and its stacked-stone front – provide a cozy at-home feel. Owner Paul VanBockern calls the new 41st Street restaurant an “urban diner.”

“We love brunch,” says VanBockern. “We offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, but with a brunch frame of mind.” That philosophy means a relaxed environment where you can sit and enjoy a custom coffee or smoothie in the morning or a refreshing cocktail at night. And, while you’re sipping, you will want to choose an item – or two – from their menu of comfort foods with a modern twist. “We are serving up from-scratch recipes with the freshest and

Starting with the breakfast menu, you can kick off your day with a healthy yogurt bowl with homemade granola and fresh berries or cinnamon scented steel cut oats. Or, go for something a little heartier like a biscuit plate with buttermilk fried chicken fritters, omelets loaded with goodness or the “A.M. over seasoned waffle fries. On the sweeter side, their coffee bar has pastries to stay or go, or you can settle in with the “OMG French Toast” made with thick-cut challa bread and citrus custard with fresh berries or Butterfinger Pancakes (yes, as in the candy bar). Many items like the Farmer’s Breakfast, with 2 fresh eggs, thick bacon or “big sausage,” are available all day…which gives you a hint as to where the restaurant got its name. Many of their breakfast and brunch offerings feature their homemade morning bread and jam. If you have special dietary needs, don’t worry. The All Day Café has a gluten-free menu that features many of the same great offerings with gluten-free toast. The brunch (lunchtime) and dinner menus share many of the same great items like the Café Burger, Crab BLT, Café Reuben and the Sioux Falls Salad, which features Belgian endive, apples, cob smoked ham, spiced almonds, brie, pickled red onion and a bourbon sorghum vinaigrette. If you are looking for true comfort food, you may want to dig into the Colorado Hot – a plate filled with oven turkey, ham, thick bacon, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, their own Green 5280 Chili (5280=mile high) and griddled challa bread. If that’s not enough, you can add one of their special sides, like a salad, café potatoes (think breakfast potatoes), daily vegetable, sweet potato fries or “mac in the cheese.” “We will look for opportunities to incorporate unique ingredients and local foods,” says VanBockern. “We plan to change-up the menu from time to time in order to take advantage of seasonal specialties.” The Goodnight Bar hand crafts drinks designed for all times of the day. Find a seat right at the bar or in the restaurant. And, once the weather warms up again, you will be able to enjoy the great outdoors on their spacious patio. From the variety of beers and wines, to house-made sangria, you will find something to suit your taste. If you are coming with friends, try one of the punch bowls, like the Good Morning Punch Bowl with strawberry puree, orange juice, vodka and champagne. After the game, toast your team with the Gridiron Punch Bowl with Fat Tire Amber Ale, sweet pineapple and yellow chartreuse. Feeling adventurous? Try the “Bacon & Eggs” – Jack Daniels, maple syrup, lemon juice, bitters, egg white and a bacon strip. The cocktail list is so extensive, the drinks have a menu all to themselves, with specials every day of the week. The funky, farmhouse, come-and-stay-awhile feeling is there from the first smiles you are greeted with at the front door to the quaint little terra cotta pot that delivers your check at the end of the meal. Whether you come during the day, or come for a good night, be sure to follow the advice that hangs in the center of the restaurant: Keep Calm and Brunch On.

Dave and Lisa Nielson Home

en years ago, Dave and Lisa Nielson had two young children and were in need of a little more space. So, they found the perfect lot and built a new home in western Sioux Falls. The lot they picked sits up on a hill, with other homes close enough to be a neighborhood, yet the Nielsons are still provided some privacy by the trees in their backyard. “Before the park and the bike trail were down there,” says Lisa, “it wasn’t unusual for us to see all sorts of animals here. Deer would come up to the yard, and we even had a fox and a snapping turtle hang around.” Even with more human population moving in, she says they still enjoy the nature of their backyard and the view of the city.

The house was built with plenty of windows facing the back in order to bring the outdoors in. “We built this house long before there was such a thing as Pinterest,” says Lisa. “So I literally had pages torn out of magazines and notebook pages with ideas of features we knew we wanted.” One of those features is a central area in the kitchen for the phone, office items and, as Lisa says, all the “junk” that naturally finds its way onto kitchen counters. The area has a recessed shelf area with outlets for charging electronics, drawers for storage and doors that close to hide it all away. The other item high on Lisa’s “want” list was a pantry, but not

The double doors open to a walk-in pantry so spacious that even their full-size, upright freezer has its own place. “I love having the freezer in here,” says Lisa. “Otherwise, we’d have to make lots of trips up and down the stairs. To get room for all of the shelving, Dave conceded a little garage space. But, Lisa assured him it would be well-used. There are pull out baskets designed specifically for placemats and for holding bags of chips. The higher shelves are perfect for bigger pans and what Lisa calls the “goofy appliances” like the fondue pot that you might otherwise not be able to find space for in the kitchen.

Lisa says her original plan was to not have window coverings on the back side because of the great natural view, but adds that quickly changed. “The first morning we got up and realized how incredibly bright it was,” she laughs, “so we decided we might need some window treatments after all.” With the size of the windows in the dining room, though, she didn’t want an abundance of fabric. a weekend read. It’s also a favorite spot of the Nielson’s little Yorkie, Rocky, who has a blanket to curl up on at the end of the chair. He also has a set of stairs to help him get up to the bed. Double doors open to the master bath, and the first thing you see is the sunken jacuzzi tub. A heated floor and curved drywall cut-outs on either side of the tub with candles hanging on wall sconces give it a spa getaway feel. They chose frosted glass for the window to the outside to eliminate the need for a window treatment and still get both privacy and natural light. The his-and-hers vanity has storage separating the two sinks, and even more storage is available in the enviable walk-in closet. “This closet size is almost identical to the one in our previous home,” says Lisa, “so we were able to set it up in the way we had it before, with a few tweaks here and there.” Because Dave travels quite a bit, he likes to have space to get organized for his trips. A pull-out tray on his side of the closet allows him to set things out for packing. A retractable horizontal rod provides a spot to hang clothes as he’s getting ready. Lisa wishes her side had that as well, but laughs as she says that was the trade-off for the garage space she “borrowed” for the pantry. Lisa uses the office space on the main floor, with a table desk in the center of the room and a large office center behind it for the computer and plenty of storage for files. The bumpout window faces the front yard, and it extends almost to the ETC syverson ad bath_OL_Layout 1 1/15/14 1:22 PM Page 1
floor, which makes it easy for little Rocky to keep an eye on the neighbors. The red and gold drapery fabric with an elephant pattern looks like something you might see at a Moroccan market. Each of the family members has a little of their own space in the lower level, with an office for Dave, a “young man cave” with comfortable seating for TV or video game time, and Lisa has a craft room. The space is primarily for scrapbooking supplies, but she also does a little sewing, painting, jewelry making and more. “I love Pinterest,” she says. “I find an idea I like and immediately have to get what I need to try to make it myself.” To create her workspace, she took two unpainted cabinets from Menard’s and finished them to match the wall color. A long counter top spans the length of the wall to cover the cabinets on either end with open space in between. The main family room has a bar with drywall cut-out accents and glass-front cabinets. A table and chairs provides seating space for entertaining. The curved wall highlights the fireplace and the cut-outs with lighting provide shelves to hold other family and travel mementos like a framed tile from Sagrada Familia, the Barcelona Basilica designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Because the Nielsons are busy with work, hobbies and travel, they truly appreciate the opportunities they have to relax in their comfortable home and look out over the Sioux Falls skyline.

The Man’s Guide to Valentine’s Day By Jim Mathis
I
know that the majority of the readers of this fine publication are women. If that’s you, stop right here and pass this article along to the man in your life. As a public service, I offer a few suggestions for a romantic Valentine’s Day. Step 1: Ditch the Kids It’s hard to have a romantic evening when Junior crawls between you. Call a sitter, call your mom and dad; whatever it takes, find someone to watch the kids. In a perfect world, this will not be at your house, so grandma’s house or a sleepover is ideal. Step 2: Dinner Plans Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, you are probably already too late to get a great table at her favorite restaurant. No, the sports bar is not an option. If you can’t get into a nice place, you’re going to be on chef duty. Not real handy in the kitchen? Don’t worry, plan a simple meal and ask her to help prepare it with you. But you have to do the heavy lifting! Working together is good, pushing the meal prep off on her is bad. Don’t start the night that way. If a five-course gourmet meal is beyond what you can handle, try an appetizer of fresh fruit and yogurt to dip it in. The grocery store will probably even have a few trays already made up. So far, so good. For the main course, it could be anything you’re comfortable cooking. Trust me; you’ll get big points for the effort. You could make pizza, steaks, salads or even bring home a rotisserie chicken and some sides from the butcher shop or mega-mart. Step 3: Set the Mood Music is a good place to start. Leave your Def Leppard and Molly Hatchet 8-tracks on the shelf and grab some of her music. If she has an iPod, check her iTunes to see what songs are played most often or look for a playlist of slow, mellow music. And keep the volume in check. As guys, we tend to want to crank it up, but remember, this night is for her, not you. She wants soft background music, but it shouldn’t interfere with the conversation. Then dim the lights, if you want to go all out, light a few candles if you can find them. Turn the thermostat up a couple of degrees. Women tend to be colder than men and you want her to be comfortable. As I said, this evening is all about her. Flowers would be a nice touch too, but if you already sent them to her office, don’t overdo it. Step 4: Dessert Here’s where you splurge. Does she have a favorite that she orders whenever you go out? Like cheesecake or tiramisu? If so, get two orders to-go and stash them in the fridge. If not, find

a nice bakeshop and order something that looks completely decadent. And if you’re not sure, ask them what the most popular desserts with women are. They will know and steer you in the right direction. That should be the start of a really nice evening together. Want to take it to another level? OK, my friend, add one or more of these steps for the Advanced Course.
Advanced Course Step 5: Romantic Movie Now there are a lot of directions you could go here, so you’ll need to know what’s right for your girl. Some may want a light, romantic comedy (think When Harry Met Sally), others might need full-strength romance like Pride and Prejudice. For my bride, I think the right movie would be on the lighter side, but still a tearjerker like Lady and the Tramp. The scene with the spaghetti will get her every time. Avoid action movies; if it has Steven Seagal or Arnold Schwarzenegger, skip it.
Gr
rs e l w o
You may cringe at the idea of a couple’s pedicure, but she will be impressed that you stepped outside your comfort zone. And the couple’s massage will make you feel good enough that you forget about the awkwardness you were feeling early on. Step 7: Sunset Dinner on the Beach OK, so unless you have unlimited access to a private jet, it might be too late for this one. But trust me my friend, it’s worth the effort. I’ve arranged sunset dinners on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and the Bahamas. The photos will make her friends jealous, and it’s something you’ll talk about for years. Maybe it’s time to start planning for next Valentine’s Day. OK guys, there’s the outline. Get started on an evening she won’t soon forget. And remember, a little effort in February will pay dividends through the whole year. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. Jim is a hopeless romantic who works side-by-side with his bride everyday at ADwërks, an ad agency in Uptown Sioux Falls.

The Art
of Nurturing a Relationship by Riccardo Tarabelsi
D
on’t turn the page! You’re in the right section. This is the etc for her wine article, I promise. This is not the relationship advice column; however, there are more similarities between a relationship and wine than one might think. For the wine collector, there are many key factors to nurturing wine so that it will age gracefully and peak at the right moment. Much like a relationship, wines need love and caring too. Below are the keys to nurturing wine (and your relationship) to make this Valentine’s Day a day to remember. Key #1 Keep Cool In a budding relationship, it’s important to keep cool and allow the relationship develop naturally. This is very important to wines too. While wines are aging, they like to be kept at cooler temperatures. Heat is enemy number one for wine. Temperatures higher than 70° F will age a wine more quickly than is usually desirable. And if it gets too much hotter, your wine may get “cooked,” resulting in flat aromas and flavors. The
34 nest |
vino
ideal temperature range is between 55° F and 65° F, though this isn’t an exact science. Don’t fret too much if your storage runs a couple degrees warmer, as long as you’re opening the bottles within a few years from their release. Key #2 Going Steady Relationships are like roller coasters, but as long as your relationship has a steady goal, it’s going to last for a long time. More important than worrying about achieving a perfect 58°F is avoiding the landmines of rapid, extreme or frequent temperature swings. On top of cooked flavors, the expansion and contraction of the liquid inside the bottle might push the cork out or cause seepage. Aim for consistency, but don’t get paranoid about minor temperature fluctuations; wines may see worse in transit from the winery to the store. (Even if heat has caused wine to seep out past the cork, that doesn’t always mean the wine is ruined. There’s no way to know until you open it—it could still be delicious.)
a desert or in arctic conditions, it probably won’t happen to you. Anywhere between 50 percent and 80 percent humidity is considered safe, and placing a pan of water in your storage area can improve conditions. Conversely, extremely damp conditions can promote mold. This won’t affect a properly sealed wine, but can damage the labels. A dehumidifier can fix that. Key #5 Sideways Again, I know what you’re thinking but get your mind out of the gutter! Traditionally, bottles have been stored on their sides in order to keep the liquid up against the cork, which theoretically should keep the cork from drying out. If you’re planning on drinking these bottles in the near- to mid-term, or if the bottles have alternative closures (screw caps, glass or plastic corks), this is not necessary. I will say this: horizontal racking is a space-efficient way to store your bottles, and it definitely can’t harm your wines. Key #6 Good Vibrations No, no, no, don’t even go there! There is nothing good about vibrations when it comes to your wine storage. There are theories that vibration could damage wine in the long term by speeding up the chemical reactions in the liquid. Some serious collectors worry about even the subtle vibrations caused by electronic appliances, though there’s little evidence documenting the impacts of this. Significant vibrations could possibly disturb the sediment in older wines and keep them from settling, potentially making them unpleasantly gritty. Unless you live above a train station or are hosting rock concerts, is this likely to be a problem for your short-term storage? No.
Key #3 Turn the Lights Off Okay, keep calm. We all know what this means in a relationship, but to wine, light, especially sunlight, can pose a potential problem for long-term storage. The sun’s UV rays can degrade and prematurely age wine. One of the reasons why vintners use colored glass bottles? They’re like sunglasses for wine. Light from household bulbs probably won’t damage the wine itself, but can fade your labels in the long run. Incandescent bulbs may be a bit safer than fluorescent bulbs, which do emit very small amounts of ultraviolet light. Key #4 Don’t Let Them See You Sweat Remember the butterflies you felt when you were first dating your loved one? Did you ever let them see you sweat? Conventional wisdom says that wines should be stored at an ideal humidity level of 70 percent. The theory goes that dry air will dry out the corks, which would let air into the bottle and spoil the wine. Yes, this does happen, but unless you live in
Key #7 Location. Location. Location I don’t know how this pertains to love (maybe being in the right place at the right time?) For wine storage, it’s finding a cool, not-too-damp space in the basement that can double as a cellar. Rule out your kitchen, laundry room, or boiler room, where hot temperatures could affect your wines, and look for a location not directly in line with light pouring in from a window. You could also buy a small wine cooler and follow the same guidelines: If you keep your wine fridge in a cool place, it won’t have to work so hard, keeping your energy bill down. Hopefully I’ve been able to give you some vital pieces to the romantic puzzle of your relationship. Probably not; however, I do hope you now have enough information to get started on your wine collection. It’s an exciting adventure that demands your attention to detail, a commitment to quality, and a patient soul. Sounds a lot like a relationship to me… Buon Valentino and Carpe Vino! Sun Valley Smoked Trout at Hickory Foods, Inc., and there are many more dining options to choose from. The art scene in Sun Valley includes several interesting things to see and do. The art galleries are said to be some of the most unique in the west, with artists represented from all around the world in over 20 local galleries. Sun Valley was listed 18th in the book, “The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America”, and mentioned in a variety of magazines, including Art Ltd Magazine, which said, “At an elevation of 5,945 feet, the air in Sun Valley is rarified - and so is the clientele of the area’s topflight art galleries. Serving the valley’s plethora of well-heeled
and well-educated art collections are art galleries that could hold their own in Manhattan, Berlin, London, or Los Angeles.” The Sun Valley area has the reputation of being the Alps of America. It is home to the largest snowmaking system in the world, and operates on both Bald and Dollar Mountain. The Nordic trails span the length of the valley from Bellevue in the south to Galena Lodge, which is almost 40 miles to the north. Bald Mountain, or “Baldy”, is considered by serious skiers as America’s best ski mountain. Offering 64 runs and 13 lifts, Baldy sends skiers up 3,400 feet to a summit altitude of 9,150. It is also known for its lack of lift lines and fluffy snow. Lookout

Mountain bikers will love the ability to ride the chairlift with their bike to the top of the mountain just to ride their bike down 3,400 feet. Dollar Mountain is treeless and the slopes are perfectly groomed, which is ideal for the beginner snowboarder or skier. The gentle terrain mixed with the more challenging slopes for the experience makes Dollar Mountain the perfect location for those who are just starting out and those who want more of a challenge. Kids will enjoy the terrain park, tubing hill, and half pipe as well. The Snow Tubing Park at Dollar Mountain contains three 600-ft lanes for customized snow tubes. The new park is located nearby Carol’s

“...it’s just as important as ever to schedule annual exams, and communicate with your care provider about your need for regular screening tests...”
O
nce a common cause of cancer deaths among women, cervical cancer is not the health threat it once was in America. Why? Widespread screening catches it early – often before it even becomes cancer. And, research has discovered the main cause of cervical cancer, so it can be prevented in future generations. While all this is good news, it’s just as important as ever to schedule annual exams, and communicate with your care provider about your need for regular screening tests, said Dr. Luis Rojas, Gynecologic Oncologist with Avera Medical Group Gynecologic Oncology.
“In Third World countries, where women don’t get Pap tests or follow up on abnormal Pap results, the incidence of cervical cancer is much higher,” Dr. Rojas said. “In America, we have better tools than ever before for preventing, detecting and treating cervical cancer.” One advancement is the Pap test itself, which today yields a more accurate, trustworthy result. Research has also discovered that most cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Yet among the many types of HPV, only about 20 percent cause cancer. “This makes results of screening tests more predictive of the future,” Dr. Rojas said.
etc. for her | February 2014 47
“As with most cancers, the best cure is prevention. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and young women age 11-26, as well as males ages 11-21.”
Until only recently, Pap tests were recommended each year as part of a well-woman exam. While annual visits to your health care provider are still important, the Pap test might not be part of every visit. Based on the latest research behind cervical cancer, the American Cancer Society now makes the following recommendations: • Pap tests are not needed before age 21, regardless of when a woman becomes sexually active. • Women between ages 21 and 29 should have a Pap test every three years, but HPV testing is not needed, unless a Pap test is abnormal. This is because women of this age often have a strong immune system, and are able to fight off HPV on their own, Dr. Rojas explained. • Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test plus an HPV test every five years. Or, it is also considered OK to have a Pap test alone every three years. • Women over age 65 who have always had normal Pap results no longer need to be screened. Women with a history of pre-cancerous cervical cells should be tested for at least 20 years after that diagnosis. • Women who have had surgical removal of the uterus and cervix for reasons not related to cervical cancer, with no history of cervical cancer, do not need the Pap test. Women who have been vaccinated against HPV should still follow screening recommendations for their age group. Some women, based on their health history, should have a different screening schedule for cervical cancer. “In the past, we were over-screening for cervical cancer. Today, we understand more about the disease, and what age

HEalth & Well-being
groups need what types of screening,” Dr. Rojas said. Some women feel safer being screened every year. Yet there are others who totally ignore screening, and end up with cancer when it could have been caught at an earlier, more treatable or pre-cancerous stage. “The most common reason we find cervical cancer is that a woman hasn’t gone to the doctor for 10 years,” Dr. Rojas said. If Pap or HPV test results are abnormal, doctors can perform more tests, including colposcopy and cervical biopsy, to study the cells and then treat any condition that exists before it becomes cancerous. The biggest advancement in treating cervical cancer is the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotics. “These new techniques result in fewer complications, less pain and a faster recovery,” Dr. Rojas said. “For advanced cancer, new combinations of chemotherapy and radiation represent one of the biggest survival advantages in the history of cervical cancer care,” Dr. Rojas said. There are also new surgical techniques which preserve childbearing function. For example, a radical trachelectomy leaves the uterus in place, so a woman can successfully achieve a pregnancy. As with most cancers, the best cure is prevention. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and young women age 11-26, as well as males ages 11-21. Not smoking is another important factor in prevention. Smoking compromises local immunity and perpetuates infection of HPV, placing women at higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Batter Up! The Rylan Bruns Room By Mary Michaels | Photos by chang photography
“Eat. Sleep. Play Ball.”
W
hen 2-year-old Rylan first joined the Bruns family, he spent his first six months sharing a room with big sister Reese. Now, though, his room has a baseball theme. “He’s all boy,” says mom, Kelli. According to Kelli, many items in the room were inspired by ideas she found on Pinterest, such as the hand-painted, curved ball stitching on the walls and the wooden letters that spell out Rylan’s name on the wall. True to our great American pastime, the room is decorated in red, white and blue, both solids and pin stripes. A fleece tie blanket covered in baseballs is ready for nap time in Rylan’s crib, which very soon will convert to his “big” bed.

Baseball shaped knobs adorn the dresser that also doubles as a changing table. Two wire figures in the shape of a pitcher and a batter also hang on the wall. On a red weathered-look wood shelf are Rylan’s one-year pictures. In one, he is sporting a Detroit Tiger’s onesie, a favorite team of his dad, Scott. The picture was finished in black and white, with just the word Tigers colored in orange. A second picture on the shelf complements another that hangs on the wall – Rylan in a baseball outfit, cap on backwards, intently studying the baseball in his hands. His tiny handprint now adorns that ball, and it sits on the shelf with the pictures. Above the shelf is a mirror that Kelli found at Hobby Lobby.
Each side of the frame is a small bat. It complements the batframed wall plate covering the light switch in the room. A red weathered table sits next to the glider chair, which is a great spot for Rylan to hear baseball stories, perhaps some about Babe Ruth, who appears in a picturing hanging above the chair. On the table is a small basket filled with oversized, soft, baseballs…just right for Rylan to practice his pitching now. Next to the closet is a spot for his cap – a hat hook that drops
from a wooden square with the letter “R.” With Rylan and Reese growing up, the family is looking for a little more space and is exploring the housing market. But even if they do move, says Kelli, she’ll transplant Rylan’s décor from his current room to a new room. There’s only one important phrase Rylan needs to remember, and it’s written on a wooden plaque hanging on the wall: Eat. Sleep. Play Ball.

moms on what they can expect before, during and after their baby arrives. The pregnancy coach also helps moms design a pregnancy plan to meet their pregnancy goals. “We really want these women to have a positive pregnancy experience,” says Cheryl Nelson, RN. “A women’s pregnancy experience is something that stays with a woman for the rest of her life.” Cheryl Nelson is one of the pregnancy coaches helping women at the Mom2Be Center. Moms can come to the center and learn about a myriad of topics. From eating well, exercising, managing stress to breast versus bottle-feeding and returning

to work after childbirth. Moms also have the opportunity to design a pregnancy plan, receive a pregnancy journey journal and talk with a personal fitness coach, childbirth educator or nutritionist. “Every pregnancy and every woman is unique,” comments Nelson. “We try and figure out what will work best for each woman and every woman has questions a pregnancy coach can help her find the answers to.” The Mom2Be Center is open to all women at various stages of their pregnancy journey, from thinking about baby to first timers in their first trimesters to moms who already have a few little

ones at home, the Mom2Be Center is prepared to answer any questions they might have. “We do see a lot of first time moms,” recounts Nelson. “Mostly because they have the least amount of information. But we have a lot of women who have already had children come to the center to learn about services that maybe weren’t available during their previous pregnancies.” The first time at the center, moms can fill out a questionnaire. Through this, the pregnancy coaches can zero in on what is important to each woman. “We look at what’s important to each woman,” says Nelson. “ What are they interested in? What are their goals? We ask what it is that they want to learn and what they want to do.” At about 32 weeks into her third pregnancy, Jessica was looking for information about getting into shape during and after her pregnancy. Jessica’s coach referred her to the Mom2Be fitness services offered through Sanford Women’s. “I went to a few fitness classes and just really enjoyed it,” says Jessica. “The instructors were so personable and made you feel comfortable.” Prenatal fitness classes, like all aspects of the Mom2Be program, are catered specifically to each woman. “Besides the prenatal fitness classes, women can also have a one-on-one personal fitness coaching consultation where a coach shows them exercises and makes sure they are performing the exercises using proper form along with everyday pregnancy tips,” says Nelson. “Then the mom can take the instructions and do the workout at home. Or she can enroll in a group prenatal fitness class with other expectant moms.” Prenatal fitness classes and Mom2Be personal fitness coaching not only promotes a healthy pregnancy for moms and their babies, but they can also give women confidence. “When you are pregnant, you don’t always feel very comfortable in your body,” laughs Jessica. “Going to the fitness classes just makes you feel better.” From helping first-timers adjust to their changing bodies to showing experienced moms ways to get their other children involved in the pregnancy, the Mom2Be Center is ready to help any expectant mom at any stage in her pregnancy. “I would recommend it to any woman who is getting ready to have a baby,” says Jessica. “I really got some great info at the Mom2Be Center that would have been nice to have for my other pregnancies.” “These women come here to have a healthy pregnancy,” says Nelson. “They want to do everything they can to give their baby the best start that they can.”

s the lovers holiday approaches and little ones are near, Valentine’s Day becomes a family affair. A time when heart shaped doilies become family keepsakes, baking cookies and cupcakes doubles by the dozens, and that romantic dinner for two turns into a homemade heart shaped pizza to share. Oh how hearts alike, adore when Valentine’s day is near. When families are young; hand prints, paint and tiny toes are pressed upon paper to make hearts glow. Attached with poems encircled by whimsy, are glitter, stickers and bows. Faces traced by this famous shape to send off cards, that love has embraced. A simple way to remember the love that is shared throughout the year. As we toddle along, Valentine’s day becomes more of a song, with finger plays, stories and rhyme. Passing on the finger paints and heading straight for the flour, oh the fun to be had

Celebrations
Our days filled with hearts and rainbows of glitter, reds and pinks; will leave us ready to have a nice evening with the ones we love. Making dinner together is always a fun experience and could lead to silly memories to share. Heart shaped pasta that you can purchase online, a perfect bottle of wine, and a dessert to dress the table to the nines. You don’t necessarily have to go out for a wonderful night. Cuddling up with your favorite crew to watch a movie or read a few books will leave the house at rest. Valentines Day, what a lovely time of year to shower the ones we hold dear. With love surrounding us, let us not forget, the greatest gift is time well spent together. Here’s to the love in your life, and may you be surrounded by it throughout the year. Cheers!

Valentine’s Day Crafts
by Jessica Weischedel
Paint Chip Valentine
Scratch-Off Valentine’s Day Card
Materials Needed: Paint chips in Valentine’s Day colors such as pink and red hues, a black marker, ribbon, and a hole punch.
Materials Needed: Cardstock in the color of your choice, a gold pen, clear contact paper, scissors, gold paint, a paint brush, dishwashing liquid, and an envelope to fit the card.
Directions: Get creative with your paint chips and write a personal messages in each color space with a black marker. For example, I “heart”, and a characteristic about the recipient of the valentine. You can choose to cut off the name of the paint color and the rounded edges they tend to come with, and decorate as much as you’d like. Make it into a simple card, or a book of coupons. Your possibilities are limitless. Add an optional hole with a hole punch and tie several paint chips together with a ribbon to form a Valentine’s Day book for your loved one.

for kids
Directions: Cut your card stock to a desired size of card you’d like to give to your loved one, and fold in half to form the card. Draw a heart on your card and write a message to someone that will be secret. Draw a second heart if the card requires an inside portion to be created. Cut out the heart and cover it with clear contact paper, then cut off the excess contact paper with scissors. Mix together one part dishwashing liquid and two parts gold paint. Taking your paintbrush, paint over the inside of your heart using light strokes. Allow to dry thoroughly, then repeat the painting step for a second coat; do this until your message is completely hidden with paint. When the heart is completely dry, place it in an envelope, and give to your recipient. They will be able to scratch off the gold paint using a coin or a fingernail to reveal the secret message.
Heart Tic Tac Toe
Heart-Shaped Crayons
Materials Needed: Six large felt squares, three in one color and three in a different color, scissors, yarn, a needle, poster board in white, red or pink, a black marker, dry beans, and a hot glue gun.
Materials Needed: Crayon pieces, scrap paper, scissors, marker, colored card stock, double-sided foam mounting tape, and a heart-shaped cookie or muffin tin.
Directions: Fold the poster board in half and cut out a large heart shape. Make this as big as possible, then open it up in order to draw your Tic Tac Toe lines. This entails two vertical lines, and two horizontal lines, all with an even spacing. It would be a good idea to use a pencil to draw the lines first, just in case they aren’t even right away, then trace over the pencil with a black marker. Use the extra edge of the poster board paper to make perfectly straight lines, or use a ruler if you prefer. To create the heart bean bags, cut four hearts out of each felt square, then sew two of the same color together with yarn and a needle, or a hot glue gun or a sewing machine if you prefer the speedier method. Leave at least an inch of space in order to fill them with the dry beans. This will create 24 felt hearts, which you will now fill half way full with beans, or enough to be able to still seal the small whole shut. Now you are ready to play Tic Tac Toe!
Directions: Heat the oven to 250 degrees. Fill each heart-shaped mold with various crayon pieces and place into the oven. Bake until the crayons melt, or for about 10 to 15 minutes. Place a cookie sheet under the crayons in case any of them drip while baking. Let the crayons cool, then remove the hearts from the molds and smooth any rough edges by rubbing them on a piece of scrap paper. You now have heart-shaped crayons to share with your loved ones for Valentine’s Day.

Africa is My Home A Child of the Amistad by Monica Edinger When a drought hits her homeland in Sierra Leone, nine-year-old Magulu is sold as a pawn by her father in exchange for rice. But before she can work off her debt, an unthinkable chain of events unfolds: a capture by slave traders; weeks in a dark and airless hold; a landing in Cuba, where she and three other children are sold and taken aboard the Amistad; a mutiny aboard ship; a trial in New Haven that eventually goes all the way to the Supreme Court and is argued in the Africans’ favor by John Quincy Adams. Narrated in a remarkable first-person voice, this fictionalized book of memories of a real-life figure retells history through the eyes of a child — from seeing mirrors for the first time and struggling with laughably complicated clothing to longing for family and a home she never forgets. Chrissy Meyer Following Her Heart to Stop a Common Killer By Adrienne McKeown

t’s got all the makings of a heart-pumping mystery novel. A common killer sneaks up on a woman and attacks her friends, co-workers, loved ones, and even random strangers. No one is safe. Realizing the impact this often ignored killer is having on society, she follows her heart and vows to help stop the killer. She even makes it her full-time job to educate others about the killer and works to raise resources to bring the killer to an end. Is your heart pumping yet? If it is, that’s great! According to the American Heart Association, getting your heart pumping for 30 minutes most days of the week is one of the key steps in stopping heart disease. And while heart disease probably isn’t going to be the weapon of choice in many mystery novels, it is extremely deadly, killing approximately 450,000 women each year—about one every minute. In fact, more women die of cardiovascular

disease than the next five causes of death combined; including all forms of cancer. It is statistics like that coupled with a family history of heart disease that brought Chrissy Meyer to work for the American Heart Association two years ago. After serving as a volunteer for the “Go Red for Women” campaign and experiencing the effects of heart disease first hand within her family, Chrissy went to work as the Director of Corporate and Media Relations for a cause that was—pardon the pun—close to her heart. During this month, when the heart gets a lot of attention, we sat down with Chrissy to learn more about this cold-hearted killer and what the American Heart Association is doing to raise awareness and reduce heart disease.
Please tell us a little bit about the American Heart Association. What is it and what do you do? That’s a big question! Our mission is to eliminate cardiovascular disease and stroke. We are completely focused on that. Ideally, we would love to put ourselves out of business. We focus on educating people about their risk of heart disease and how to prevent heart disease. We also focus very heavily on research, and outside of the federal government, we are the largest funder

of cardiovascular disease research. Many of the dollars we raise go directly into research programs to prevent heart disease or to develop devices. In fact, pacemakers and internal defibrillators are things that came out of American Heart Association research, and CPR is also a science that came out of an American Heart Association research project. We also do a lot of quality programs, taking the research and implementing it into healthcare systems so that when people walk into an AHA Get With The Guidelinescertified hospital, they know they will be receiving treatment that is conducted according to the very best science that is available today. We also do things with the Mission Lifeline project which helps get critical patients from remote areas of the state into the care they need within two hours. And of course, we also implement community events like the Go Red for Women movement, which is about educating women and raising the dollars necessary for that education program and for funding woman-focused research. These are just a few of the things we do.
How common is heart disease? Do women—especially healthy women—really need to be concerned about it? Everybody should be concerned about it. You can outwardly appear to be incredibly healthy—be a runner, be super health

conscious—and discover that you have very high cholesterol, because it’s hereditary. So it’s important to know your numbers, understand your body, and have those conversations with your doctor. Your risk is significant. It is the number one killer, and it affects everyone. It is not discriminating.
fatigued, I have this terrible indigestion, and I just feel so tired and weak all the time.” The doctor would say, “Your kids are killing you. What woman isn’t tired or doesn’t have heartburn?” You just don’t’ think, “Oh, it could be my heart.” But it could be.
So what can we do to lower our risk of heart disease? That’s a little bit scary. So what are the symptoms? What should we be watching for? The symptoms are different for women than for men. For women, the symptoms are things like indigestion, shortness of breath, fatigue, sweating profusely, chest pain that feels more like heartburn than a clenching pain, tightness in your jaw or neck or back and shoulders. The symptom that you hear about often is the pain in the left arm, but that is more of a male symptom. Women don’t seem to experience that as much.
That strikes me as strange that women and men experience different symptoms. Obviously, men and women are different biologically, but you would think that a heart is a heart. It’s good to know that our symptoms are different because those aren’t the symptoms we’ve typically heard about. Exactly. If a woman went to the doctor and said, “I’ve been

Know your numbers. Make that doctor’s appointment and have that conversation with your doctor. Know things like your cholesterol, resting blood glucose, and blood pressure numbers. We talk about Life’s Simple 7. There are seven things you should try to manage: cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, physical activity, healthy eating, Body Mass Index (BMI), and not smoking.
And what’s your take on the heart screenings we hear about in the media? Both Avera and Sanford do heart and vascular screenings, and I highly recommend them to anybody. If you are at all interested in it, it is fabulous! You can do the heart or the vascular screening for $50 or you can do both for $75. Basically, the screenings measure all of those numbers we talked about as well as some additional factors like calcium score. When you’re done, you get a consultation with someone who walks you through the
information and tells you about risks or things that are concerning and also provides you with a plan of action. When I did it, it took a couple of hours, but it’s one of those things that is well worth the money and time.
February is a month when we typically think about matters of the proverbial heart—love and Valentine’s Day and all that stuff. But you have some pretty big events planned during February as well. Can you please tell us about what you have coming up this month? February is American Hearth Month, so during this month, we really focus on Go Red for Women. We encourage people to wear red on February 7th, the first Friday of the month. That night, we’ll have the Red Dress Dash. It’s a fun event we’re doing to raise awareness. People just throw on a red dress over their parkas or whatever and we dash! We’ll be running from the Lumber Exchange over by 8th and Railroad and run along the bike trail. It’s just fun. And afterwards, everybody can stay downtown and enjoy the First Friday activities. Then, on the 21st, we have our Go Red for Women luncheon, and that is our big fundraiser for Go Red for Women, but it is also an awareness event. We typically have about 450 people attend. It is both educational and inspirational.
Speaking of education, what is the biggest myth about heart disease that you wish people would have a change of heart about (pardon the pun)? The biggest thing is knowing that heart disease is the number one killer. If there is no other message that we get out there, that’s the most important. I always think about the fact that one in three women dies of cardiovascular disease. One of the most powerful things we do at the luncheon is we tell people, “Look to your left. Look to your right. One of you is going to die of heart disease.” That’s a pretty powerful thing. If there’s one thing we can tell people it’s that yes, it is important to be educated about your risk of breast cancer and so many other things, but heart disease is your number one killer, so take care of yourself. And, coincidentally, if you’re doing the things that are going to help you prevent heart disease, they also are going to help you with all of those other health concerns, too. That sounds like solid advice that we should really take to heart.

spend a large part of my day as a Veterinarian fixing patients that are ill. It is very rewarding. But, there are times that I can’t fix it. Nobody can take the cancer away or convince a tired heart to continue to beat. These are the moments that we need to keep in mind what is best for the pet and their family. These conversations can be short and tear filled. There are times that we visit about the path to take for a period of days, weeks and even months. It is always important to me to do what is right for my patient and their family. It is a package deal. I always tell people that the quality of life is more important than quantity. Everyone has a different definition of quality and it is important to respect that. There is always a lot of advice from family, friends and coworkers, but they do not have the same relationship. It is a very personal decision. Well, this month, it was my turn to deal with the quality of life versus quantity dilemma. Millie, our Jack Russell Terrier, has been sick. Three years ago, her heart started giving her problems. I always thought that would be her end in the world. Problem was, she was tough and I had great heart medicines to keep her going. She did so well that she ran, played and served as the commander of the house. It was hers to run and she let everyone know it. She might have chased the cows a little slower, but they still feared the 10 lb. terror. Her heart was brave and unyielding.

She started not being able to keep her kibble down, but she still insisted on helping with chores. The radiographs and blood work were normal, but her endoscope gave us another answer. You could see the tumor growing in her stomach. It was a tough day in our lives. Denial is the first thing that went through my mind. I was no different than my clients. It was my turn to sit on that side of the table. I have been there before, but I didn’t want to go there with Millie. Who was going to help me chase the cows? Would surgery or chemotherapy help? Unfortunately the answer was “no.” This was a bad thing and I knew it. I changed diets, gave her medicine for nausea and kept a close eye on her. Good days were out numbering the bad ones. Conversations over the dinner table and with the kids at college always came down to what should we do? Then the day comes that you know in your heart, that it is time. We have had a good run of 14 years. She had such joy chasing those big cows to save my life every day. It was easy for her that day and not so easy for our family. It didn’t seem real that she was gone until I went out to do chores. My sidekick wasn’t there. Life will be different, but that is OK. It was a great 14 years!

Yankton Trail Bridge By bruce blake
T Yankton Trail Bridge Yankton Trail Park, Sioux Falls
his site has been an important Big Sioux River crossing for more than 300 years. As early as the 1700s, the Yankton Sioux forded the river here and often made camp while en route to the pipestone quarries in Minnesota. After the slaying of Judge Amidon and his son William during the Dakota Conflict of 1862, the entire population and their cavalry escort fled Sioux Falls City and crossed the river at this point. Later Federal troops used this ford when traveling between Fort Dakota (1865 and 1869) and Fort Randall. A ferry was established here in 1880. Three years later local carpenter Leonard Cashman built the first bridge, a primitive wooden affair, at this crossing. Builder S. M. Hewett constructed the Yankton Trail Bridge in 1895. A rare example of a pin-connected Parker Through Truss bridge, it is an elongated rectangular steel span, 177-feet long by 21-feet wide. Originally used by horse-drawn wagons and buggies traveling the Yankton Trail, its roadway was a wood plank floor. The OId Yankton Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. DEDICATED IN 2007 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, KAMERON & NANCY CARLSON, AND WOODS, FULLER, SCHULTZ & SMITH LAW FIRM.
