Let Your Style Tell Your Story: Dirt Road Diamond Boutique By Mary Michaels | Photos by Chang Photography

irt Road Diamond Boutique is one of the newest tenants at Remington Pointe on the southern end of Sioux Falls. Owner Kesa Alexander is an SDSU graduate in apparel merchandising who has worked in small boutique and large chain retail in Omaha, Nebraska, and Scottsdale, Arizona, before she opened her business in Sioux Falls on May 1. “I have always known this is what I wanted to do,” says

Alexander, “and people who know me knew I would get here. Fashion is my passion.” While she has lived and worked in bigger cities, she always carries her small hometown in her heart. “I grew up on a feedlot,” she says. “I have a strong connection to my family and to where I’ve come from. That’s who I am, and I knew that had to be part of my business.”

Alexander had considered opening a store in Omaha, but something held her back. All that changed when she got to Sioux Falls. “When I came here, I knew this was the right place for me to be,” she says. “Here, I have people who want me to be successful. I have found other women and other business owners who have taken me under their wing, introducing me

to others and sharing their experiences with me. Sioux Falls should be very proud of that.” The store’s name is connected to her upbringing. “People would ask me about my style,” Alexander explains. “I’ve always liked higher quality clothing items, but I’m still a farm girl at my core. So, I’d tell people I was a ‘dirt road diamond.’” Pointing to the store’s sign, Alexander talks about the word

boutique, which is the only part of the logo written in script. It was handcrafted by piecing together letters written in her late grandmother’s handwriting. “I was very close to my grandma, and this was one way I could have a part of her here with me.” The interior of the store is rustic-wood-meets-crystal chandelier. One chandelier covered in turquoise beads hangs over two side chairs upholstered in animal hide and turquoise and brown fabric. A “bedazzled” steer skull hangs on the wall behind the counter. You’ll find a selection of apparel to take you from day to evening, including colorful tanks, comfortable denim and glammed up versions of the little black dress. Alexander says that when she was planning her boutique, she wanted to find brands not already available in the area and high quality items that would last across seasons. “I knew I didn’t just want to carry trendy items,” she says. “I

want my customers to be able to invest in quality items that are going to last rather than just wearing it once and having it be out of style or out of season. You can take any of these pieces and dress them up or dress them down.” There are dresses from Nicole Miller and denim from Frame, Mother and Genetic. If you need accessories to go with your new outfit, the boutique carries handcrafted pieces from Buffalo Girl and Johnny Loves June. To add a little whimsy to your classic denim, you can pair your jeans with a soft sweater featuring a steer skull on the front but with a feminine keyhole opening in the back. Or, wear your Midwest pride with a shirt that proclaims, “God Made. Jesus Saved. South Dakota Raised.” Finally opening a store is a “dream come true,” says Alexander. A saying printed on the wall sums everything up for her: “The dirt road led me out to my dreams, the dirt road will always lead me home. Let your style tell your story.”

We Make Smiles Happen By Lee Gertsen, DDS, Family Dental Center

I

’m a dentist. In my lifetime, I’ve discovered that answering the question, “What do you do for a living?” isn’t always fun to answer. Many times when I respond, the reaction is, “Oh! I hate going to the dentist.” A professional goal of mine is to change that reaction into something positive. Modern dentistry is very efficient and effective, and with the right dentist and team of hygienists, is comfortable and not scary at all. My father is also a dentist, so growing up I knew early on what I wanted to be. Through the years, I’ve been able to watch and experience first-hand the advancements in dental technology and see how they’ve helped produce great results for people of all ages. Since graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 2009 and then working in the field for more than five years, I am now very excited to be the newest addition to a team of well-respected and highly-trained doctors at Family Dental Center in Sioux Falls. We are located just east of

Western Avenue on 45th Street and we are a true group practice. What I love about our group practice is that our patients may see just one doctor, but really they have an entire team of doctors thinking about their oral health. With a special interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, part of my philosophy is education and equipping my patients with the tools and the knowledge for how to best care for their teeth and gums at home. This part of my job is fun, and I love including this important educational piece into all of my appointments, especially with children and teens. I tell my patients that the mouth is the gateway to the body, and it serves as a window into your overall health. Each day, more and more connections are found that link oral health with other systemic conditions, so it is extremely important to be diligent each day with brushing and flossing. At Family Dental Center, Dr. Brienne Lineweber and myself, devote much of our time to pediatric dentistry. We encourage parents to bring their children in for their first dental evaluation soon after baby teeth appear. This is usually around the age of

F

one year. At the practice, we have developed programs for kids, including our Cavity Free Kids Club and our Report Cards that we fill out with the kids prior to letting them choose a prize from the treasure chest. These programs are to reward children and teens that have perfect check-ups and also to educate them about how to keep their teeth healthy in-between their 6-month appointments. Implants, restorative, preventive and cosmetic dentistry are our main focuses at Family Dental Center. Our services include, but are not limited to, the following: cleanings, space maintainers, sealants, whitening, fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, tooth replacement, denture support and mini-implants. I am excited to be a part of a practice that takes pride in their work and cares about the entire wellbeing and comfort of their patients. As you may have heard before, we make smiles happen! We look forward to seeing you soon and making your experience at the dentist positive! To learn more about our family-friendly clinic, please visit familydentalcenter.org, call us anytime at 605-338-9242 or find us on Facebook.

amily Dental Center of Sioux Falls was established in 1981 by cofounders Dr. Patrick Colbert and Dr. J. Vincent Jones. Dr. Lee Gertsen joins Dr. Colbert, Dr. Orin Ellwein and Dr. Brienne Lineweber at the practice and began seeing patients in May. The clinic is located at 2001 West 45th Street in Sioux Falls. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 605338-9242 or visit the website, familydentalcenter.org. New patients are always welcome!

ioux Falls has a rich history, and many developers have worked to preserve that history over the years; repurposing buildings from previous industrial or business use to residential.

One former business now houses several residential units with truly unique architecture and features, from brick floors to ornate woodwork and stained glass windows.

“...the history of this place really drew me in.”

A resident who moved into these condos a year ago says it was the perfect fit. “I had been in a home in the same area of town and wanted to stay in the same area,” she says. “And the history of this place really drew me in.” When you walk through the front door, you enter a foyer with brick floors and skylights. This had actually been an entryway

to the former business. A door on the opposite end used to be a side door to the business. Now, it leads out to a quaint, fencedin patio with vines of ivy covering the fence. The space makes a great sitting room for Sunday morning coffee and the newspaper with all of the natural light. It’s filled with family pictures and special mementos like the old Hohner button accordion that belonged to her father.

The original heating system is still in place, with the industrialstyle pipes running across the ceiling. They are painted a pumpkin hue to complement the rest of the color scheme of golds, greens and oranges. The high ceiling in the kitchen accommodates more skylights to brighten the space. While the open space in the kitchen provides room for cooking and entertaining, the homeowner decided to do a little updating by adding extra storage on the end of the island using a black distressed wood that matches her china hutch. Cream butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Combine the dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Stir in the rhubarb and pour into a greased 9x13 inch greased pan. Combine the dry topping ingredients in a small bowl and cut in the butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Sprinkle this mixture over the batter and bake at 350Ëš for 45-55 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Top with whipping cream if desired. Serves 16-20.

“Now everybody has got the choice, between hotdogs and hamburgers. Every one of us has got to choose, between right and wrong, and givin’ up or holdin’ on.” — John Mellencamp, “Hot Dogs and Hamburgers”

T

his July Fourth, as our nation celebrates its independence, a few hearty souls will gather on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York in a battle of wills, just as they have every year since 1916. Under the banner of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs Annual Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, they will try to beat 7-time defending champ Joey Chestnut in the most monumental of gustatory challenges. Last year Joey set a new world record downing a staggering 69 hot dogs (with their

buns) in ten minutes. Only those with strong stomachs dare to even watch. Yes, it will be televised if you’re so inclined. I will not try to recreate that feat, but I will enjoy a hot dog or two, and maybe a hamburger as well. Yes, I enjoy gourmet treats laced with truffles and lobsters, but I also really like a good hot dog. And as we gear up for the long holiday weekend, I’ve got a few tips for making the most of your hot dogs and hamburgers.

Encased Meats While I love a good frank, I’m not going to limit you to just hot dogs. No, for a Fourth of July celebration we should include a wide variety of sausages. As Doug Sohn, owner of Hot Doug’s Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium in Chicago says, “There are no two finer words in the English language than ‘encased meats,’ my friend.” I believe those words have t-shirts that echo his declaration. But choose your sausage wisely. Here are my rules. 1) A Fully Cooked Sausage is a Safe Sausage If you’re cooking for a group, it’s best to stick to fully cooked sausages. The fresh brats from the meats case may look good, but they can take a while to cook all the way through. Safety first; stick to hot dogs and Polish sausages that would be safe to eat right out of the package. Aunt Betsy’s potato salad sitting in the sun is more than enough danger for one cookout. 2) Quality Counts I know the idea of quality and hot dogs don’t seem to go together, but there is a vast difference between Nathan’s Famous or Hebrew National and a cheap, generic 30-pack of wieners. Even the best won’t set you back too much, so get off your wallet and spend the extra buck. 3) Grill Gently Back off the heat, big fella. Hot dogs and sausages are delicate. Cook them too hot and the casings will rupture and all of the juice will run out. And nobody likes a crusty, burned hot dog, so handle with care. 4) If the Bun Don’t Fit, You Must Quit A tiny hot dog bun won’t hold a big kielbasa, and that Oscar Meyer will be overpowered by a huge brat bun. Choose the right bun for the job. 5) The Bark of the Chili Dogs My father loves a good chili dog and he will order it smothered in onions. I too love a chili dog, but for me, chili dogs are often served with a side of heartburn. So bite the chili dog during the day and just be aware they may bark at night.

Burger Master The beauty of a hamburger is that it is a blank canvas and each of us can create our own masterpiece, just by adding a few condiments. But as with so many things in life, a few simple guidelines will help make your burger worthy of acclaim.

42 nest | Man in the kitchen

1) Fat is Good. A hamburger is not the place to try to shave a few calories. The extra-lean ground beef may look good, but you’ll end up with a dried-up hockey puck. Fifteen to twenty percent fat is good, and nothing too fancy; ground chuck is a great place to start. That’s ground beef, not turkey, soy or meat substitute. Don’t get me started on that whole thing. 2) Start with a Dent When burger patties cook, they tend to bulge in the middle. So before you cook yours, press your thumb into the middle of the patty; that will keep it flat as it cooks; you’ll look like a pro. 3) Being Well Seasoned is always in Season Ray Kroc, the brains behind McDonald’s said the recipe that made his hamburger joint successful was, “Salt, pepper and a whole lot of advertising.” The hot dogs and sausages come from the store loaded with garlic, spices and lots of salt; that’s what makes them taste so good. But that mound of ground chuck is just meat, so be sure to season it well with salt and pepper. If you want to add a little more spice, rock on, but start with salt and pepper. 4) Cheese? Yes Please. I always opt for cheese on a burger, and it doesn’t have to be fancy. Plain old American cheese is great. Or a nice crumble of blue cheese, or a tangy sharp cheddar, or provolone or Swiss; as long as it melts and gets a little gooey, I’ll be a happy guy. 5) Condiments Rule That blank canvas? Now it’s time to put some paint on it! Sure, ketchup, mustard and pickles are a good place to start, but don’t hold back. When it comes to mustard, I always default to Grey Poupon – a little spicy, but not too hot. And I’ll skip the ketchup and go for a nice steak sauce. Onions are good, but I love fried onion rings on a burger. The king of all toppings? Bacon. Always a good choice. For me, leave the lettuce and tomato on the side; I think they make burgers too hard to eat, but if you like them, more power to you. So what will it be, a hot dog or a hamburger? This is not a decision to be taken lightly, both are American classics, both feel like the perfect summer meal. I think I might just have one of each. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When he’s not manning the grill, Jim runs ADwërks, an ad agency in downtown Sioux Falls.

is a living, breathing entity that matures if it is the right “kind” of wine, i.e. certain varietals will age and some will not, and if it is stored properly. Don’t subject your wine to its four arch rivals, and you’ll be happy when you open it. Temperature, Humidity,

Light, and Vibration. No, these are not the control settings on my bed; these are the four enemies of wine. And without proper care and attention, your wine will succumb to these external factors when storing wine in your cellar. Unlike most food and drink, wine can improve for years. Of course, not all wines are meant to be aged. Most of the wines of the world are meant to be drunk young while they still possess their youth and freshness. Most of the wines that are destined to the cellar are red. Very few white wines need time to mature. For this reason, most white wines are purchased on an asneeded basis. With that said, there’s no doubt that all wine will benefit from even a few days rest after bringing it home. There are many reasons for starting a cellar. At the top of the list is convenience. With a well-stocked cellar, you can be assured of having the right wine at the right time. It is also fun to analyze a wine as it matures, to make note of the subtle changes in its taste and structure. By having the wine in your cellar, you can drink it after it has been allowed to reach its maturity and gain the maximum benefit from it. For a wine lover, a cellar is a necessity. Fine wines are worth paying extra for only if you can store and eventually serve them in good condition. Rarely are wine cellars a part of the standard blueprint. So finding the appropriate place to store wine is an

fdc306 Etc. July Ad 2-p.indd 1

issue for almost everyone. A little ingenuity may be required. The principles behind storing wine are not complex, difficult to understand, or necessarily difficult to achieve. And if you can’t achieve them all, some of them are better than none. Let’s begin with the ideal. From here, you can then try to approach the ideal as close as you are able. You’re looking to achieve balance and consistency. Wine is alive. As such it reacts either positively or negatively to its environment. How it is treated will determine how fast or slow it will age and how it will turn out in the end. Essentially, wine needs to be kept in a clean, dark, damp place with good ventilation, where it can be stored vibration free at a constant temperature. Temperature Temperature is the most important factor. The optimum temperature is 50 to 55°F (10-12°C). However, any constant temperature within 40-65°F (5-18°C) will do. More important than the actual temperature is the degree and rapidity of fluctuation the wine is subjected to. A slow change of temperature of ten or so degrees between winter and summer is not a big problem. But this kind of fluctuation on a daily or weekly basis will cause damage to your wines and age them prematurely. You will notice damage of this nature from the sticky deposit that often forms

around the capsule. In time, as the wine expands and contracts, it will damage the integrity of the cork. When this happens, minute quantities of wine may make its way alongside the cork possibly even allowing oxygen to seep back in. Wines kept at too high a temperature will age faster than wines kept at a cold temperature. Theoretically, wines kept at 68°F will age twice as fast as those kept at 50°F. At 55°F, wines will age so slowly – with ultimately greater complexity – that you will never have to worry about them. This is not to say the colder the better. Wine that is stored too cold can develop deposits or other suspensions in the wine. Finally, keep in mind that white wines are affected far more by temperature problems than red wines.

Humidity Moderate humidity is important to keep the corks in good resilient condition and thereby preventing them from shrinking. A relative humidity of 50-80% is the acceptable range, but about 70% is recommended. Excessive humidity will not harm the wine but will cause the labels and any other paper products – like cardboard boxes – you have in the cellar to rot. Insufficient humidity may cause the corks to dry out, lose their elasticity, and thereby allow air to get into the bottle. Light Keep your wine in the dark. Light will prematurely age a bottle of wine. Naturally, clear bottles are most susceptible to this problem, but ultraviolet light will penetrate even dark colored glass. Ultraviolet light may give a wine unpleasant aromas and ruin it. Extra care should be given to sparkling wines as they are more sensitive to light than other wines. It should be noted too, that incandescent or sodium vapor lights are better for a cellar than fluorescent lighting. Vibration Constant vibration from machinery or a nearby road disturbs a red wine’s sediment and can be harmful to all wine. This is not commonly a problem in the average home as dangerous extremes are rare and obvious. It should be remembered that excessive sound creates vibrations that may be harmful as well. Wines should be stored in such a way that you don’t have to move them around to get at a particular bottle. Once a wine is laid down, it should stay there until it is opened. Speaking of laying down, I’ve got a bottle waiting to be stored properly in my basement, next to an exterior wall, in the dark, with average humidity, and in a rack without vibration. I think I’ve got all my bases covered… do you? Carpe Vino! For more wine information and wine recommendations, contact Riccardo at riccardovino@sio.midco.net

uly is the perfect month for spending as much time outside as you possibly can. Whether it’s in celebration of the 4th of July or just for fun and sun, a picnic is a great way to enjoy good times with friends and family. You can make it a simple, laidback intimate occasion, or turn it into a picnic-themed party! There are several places right here in the Sioux Falls area that are perfect for some memorable picnic outings. For a small fee, Parks and Recreation offers picnic shelter reservations for your group at most of the Sioux Falls area parks. Here are just a few options available within this fantastic city.

At Falls Park, located at North Phillips Avenue and Falls Park Drive, there are several picnic options with beautiful surroundings and views of some of the first buildings built in Sioux Falls. The Falls of the Big Sioux River has been the center of recreation and industry since 1856, the year the city of Sioux Falls was founded. The park covers 123 acres of truly magnificent landscape. Every second, an average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls. Picnic tables are available for smaller groups around the area with views of the cascading water, and the Falls Park Open Air Shelter is available for larger picnics. The shelter is 200 feet long by 42 feet wide, with electrical and water service available at both ends, and plenty of parking. When not enjoying the fun picnic foods, you can explore the various landmarks located right in Falls Park, including the remains of the Queen Bee Mill, which was originally seven stories and one of the most advanced structures in America when it opened back in 1881, processing 1,500 bushels of wheat a day. It only lasted two years, closing in 1883 as a result of not having enough water power or wheat supply. Other landmarks in the park to see include the Falls Overlook Cafe, which was once the Light and Power Company building, giving you a spectacular view of the Falls, as well as the Millrace and Dam, the Horse Barn, the Visitor Information Center, and some beautifully crafted sculptures with intriguing stories to tell. Sherman Park, located just off of Kiwanis Avenue and next to the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History, provides an amazing view of northern Sioux Falls from a historic bluff. There are several spots to choose from for a picnic, whether it be up on the hill or down by the zoo. There are also many adventures to be had at Sherman Park, which consists of 205 acres of important Sioux Falls treasures. The U.S.S. South Dakota Battleship Memorial, the South Dakota Softball Hall of Fame, the Indian Burial Mounds, and nine softball diamonds are just some of these treasures. Plenty of children’s play areas,

Sertoma Park, located on South Oxbow Avenue, is one of the most popular places to bring your friends and family and have a picnic in Sioux Falls. You will find a giant picnic shelter with fantastic views along the Big Sioux River, with six different “playpods” for children, designed for every age group. The park itself is very large, with plenty of open air and access to bike trails. Located in Sertoma Park are the Sertoma Butterfly House and the Outdoor Campus, two favorite entertaining and educational spots in Sioux Falls. The Sertoma Butterfly House houses a collection of over 800 butterflies, flying free in their aviary. The Outdoor Campus hosts a variety of outdoor activities year-round, and offers classes on hunting, fishing, and wildlife and conservation. The Perry Nature Area consists of 23 acres of woodlands, grasslands, and riparian areas. It is also home to a wide variety of native plants and wildlife, and is filled with plenty of cultural history, as it is located on the site of the historic East Sioux Falls settlement. It is a perfect place to have a summer picnic, with plenty of privacy and green grass to run around on. Right next to the Perry Nature Area is the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum and East Sioux Falls Historic Site, which includes six historical gardens and hands-on exhibits featuring native plants. There are several trails to explore, and a rustic bridge over a clear water stream to cool off with. Very close to the Perry Nature Area is Arrowhead Park, a beautiful 131 acre park overlooking the Big Sioux River Valley from the eastern highlands. Native prairie grasses, a waterfall, colorful wildflowers, a goose lookout, a network of hiking trails, Bullfrog Pond, and the restored 1888 barn are just some of the exciting things to explore at Arrowhead Park. The park is named after a large, arrowhead shaped granite quarry that is one of three historic quarries in the park. Bird watching is a must, with plenty of birds making this their resting place. Stones from these quarries were used to build many buildings in downtown Sioux Falls, including the Old Courthouse Museum. A picnic area has been provided, with a restroom available as well. There are so many more areas in and around Sioux Falls to discover and enjoy a picnic with your family and friends. Get out and explore what this great city of Sioux Falls has to offer, and you won’t be disappointed.

round here, we embrace the summer months. They often start late and end way too soon. Right now is the perfect opportunity to go outside, get active and enjoy the great weather before it’s gone. But it’s important to remember that summertime heat can significantly affect your activities. “Summer is a great time to take your routine outdoors And add some variety to your workouts...”

Women’s Center for Health Enrichment at Sanford Health, says the key is to find a healthy balance when exercising outside. “Summer is a great time to take your routine outdoors and add some variety to your workouts,” she says. “You just need to remember that strenuous activity in hot and humid conditions, like we experience in this part of the country, can lead to heat stress, heat stroke and related complications. Pay attention to your body, as it will tell you when to take a break.” So before you begin your outdoor adventures, follow these five simple steps from the American Heart Association to play it safe in the heat and keep your cool.

1. Drink up. Keeping hydrated is important regardless of activity level or environment. But when the heat is on and you’re working hard, it’s essential. Maintain proper salt-water balance by drinking plenty of fluids – preferably water – before, during and after physical activity. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. 2. Exercise smarter, not harder. Choose cooler parts of the day to work out. The ideal time to shoot for is when the sun’s radiation is minimal – early in the morning or early in the evening. Decrease exercise intensity and duration at high temperatures or relative humidity. 3. Ease into it. Listen to your body and go at your own

Symptoms of heat stroke:

• Strong and rapid pulse

• Cold, moist skin, or chills

• Confusion and/or unconsciousness

• Dizziness or fainting

pace. Give yourself time to adapt partially to the heat through repeated gradual daily exposures. 4. Dress the part. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton to facilitate cooling by evaporation. It’s not the sweating that cools your body, but the evaporation of sweat into the atmosphere.

Having majored in art at the University of Sioux Falls, Christy has many of her creations hanging throughout the home, and some are rotated from room to room, such as the smaller piece in Palmer’s room that features a group of whales. Near the crib is a changing table in matching dark wood, and the table has open shelves for storage. Decorative cubes provide additional storage for things like diapers, wash cloths and even Palmer’s little shoes. As if planned to go along with the home décor, the shoe cube held three pairs of shoes in neutral colors and the fourth pair, summery slip-ons, provided the pop of yellow.

A picture that hangs over the changing table shows Colin and Christy with Palmer soon after he came home. The three are in a family embrace standing by the window. Even though it’s been just over two months, Christy says she can’t believe how much he has grown already. But, the Palmers will be able to mark that growth using a repurposed board painted like an oversized ruler. Christy call herself a “chronic Do-It-Yourselfer” and finds inspiration from many places including Pinterest. After finding an inexpensive small dresser at IKEA, they

The neutral foundation of the room will provide a blank canvas for Palmer to add his favorite things as he grows up, and perhaps he’ll even inherit some of his mom’s artistic talents. In the corner of the room by the window is a comfy chair and ottoman, with a throw pillow that says “Hug me.” It is a fitting accessory for a chair meant for snuggling time and dreaming of all the fun family days ahead.

ith summer in full swing, it can be tough to beat the heat – especially if you have a baby on the way. Body temperature can rise up to 20 degrees F above the outside temperature during physical activity and pregnancy can slow the body’s ability to cool itself down.

“If you want to start exercising to help ensure a healthy pregnancy, start slow. Kimbell recommends walking, swimming or walking in the water.”

For both mom and baby’s good health, expectant mothers need to beware of overheating and overexertion during summer workouts. “It is important to listen to your body,” said Rebecca Kimbell, Fitness Specialist with the Avera McKennan Fitness Center. Pay attention to any pain, discomfort or exhaustion you feel while exercising, and slow down or take a break. Warning signs that you should stop and check with your doctor include vaginal bleeding, pain, dizziness, faintness or shortness of breath. Whether you are experienced or novice, check with your

doctor before exercising during pregnancy. “You do not want to jump into a whole new routine – especially at the start of your pregnancy,” Kimbell said. Typically, it’s fine to stay at the same level of activity you were at before you became pregnant. For example, if you were a runner before, you can probably continue running. If you enjoyed bicycling, that’s fine, although a stationary bike is generally safer than biking outdoors, because pregnancy tends to throw you a little off balance. Steer clear of activities like contact sports, waterskiing, snow skiing, rollerblading

or mountain biking to protect yourself from injury. Also avoid activities that have you jumping and bouncing. You can continue to do pushups or incline pushups if the position is still comfortable. You can also do exercises lying on your back. Just don’t stay in these positions too long. When the plank position on the floor becomes too uncomfortable, you can assume this position standing against a wall. If you want to start exercising to help ensure a healthy pregnancy, start slow. Kimbell recommends walking, swimming or walking in the water. “You will have to make some modifications throughout your pregnancy,” Kimbell said, “and work with how big your belly is.” Throughout the third trimester, swimming, walking in the pool or water aerobics can be easier than walking or jogging. The water can help support the added weight of the baby and alleviate stress on muscles and joints. Kimbell also recommends Kegel exercises throughout pregnancy, and for all women – not only those who are expecting. Kegel exercises tone the pelvic floor muscles and can prevent urinary incontinence during or after pregnancy. Sticking to an exercise routine throughout pregnancy can lead to benefits such as improved sleep, posture and energy levels along with shorter labor times and a lessened chance of

a cesarean section. “Working out through your pregnancy will help you get back into shape faster after your baby is born,” Kimbell added. After delivery, get your doctor’s OK before resuming your fitness routine. “It depends on whether you have a vaginal delivery or c-section,” Kimbell said. Some women can begin exercising within a week after delivery; others aren’t up to it for six to eight weeks. You can include your baby in your workouts, for example, by securing baby in a jogging stroller and resuming your jogs or walks. Or, use workouts as a chance to get away and have some alone time, or time with a friend.

Additional ways to beat the heat: • Walk or jog in the early morning or later in the evening rather than midday. • Drink up! It’s important to stay hydrated anyway, but especially when exercising outdoors. • Swimming is a great option because it supports the additional weight of the baby and keeps you cool. To get a good workout you can tread water, do arm circles or kick laps. • Wear sunscreen – always important. Next summer you’ll be putting it on your baby!

Get Share-Worthy Shots All Summer Long By Emily Erfman

S

ummer in South Dakota may not be the longest season of the year, but it’s long on fun, adventure and great photo opportunities. My boys love summer, so we try to be outdoors as much as possible. From a special day at the lake, to the everyday smiles that happen at the pool and summer camp, opportunities to “shoot” the wildlife seem endless – and believe me, there are plenty of warm fuzzy moments to choose from. Summer color and outdoor landscapes make a perfect backdrop to your pictures. Once you reacquaint yourself with the intricacies of using a natural light source, dealing with shadows and keeping the tribe contained, summer photography can be fun. And with so many activities, you’re sure to get shareworthy shots you’ll treasure for a lifetime. We got the chance to experience the beautiful landscapes and lakes during our summer trip to northern Minnesota. The environment set the scene for an amazing and fun-filled family

vacation and I took tons of photos. I have to admit, I did put my camera down every once in a while so I wouldn’t miss out on the action. I encourage you to do the same or you could be so busy looking for the perfect picture that you miss the excitement happening in the perfect moment. If you’re like me, half the fun of any vacation comes with looking at all your pictures, laughing about the silliness, retelling your favorite stories and finally making something really special with the best photos from the trip. I had a blast creating a metal print collage with images of my family taken from the lake in Minnesota. After looking through all the pictures, I was able to make a print that told the story of our entire trip using only four amazing images. Sometimes all it takes is one image to capture the essence of an entire trip. And since you’re doing the creating, you get to choose. Can we talk candid? Smart Prints are just right for displaying those candid Instagram moments or photos straight from your

phone. My photo collage is a perfect memento for me. But for sharing, I love Smart Prints. This very cool set of 24 4x4 prints is printed on recycled cardstock and come in a handy little box you can keep or give away. Drop one in an envelope and it makes a fun greeting. Word of caution: Always print extras for grandmas and aunties. My mom couldn’t believe I didn’t make her a set of her own. When I finally delivered the goods, she couldn’t wait to show everyone, even the delivery guy.

Want one more way to capture all the summer adventure? You can never lose with a personalized photo book. I like to mix up the images of my boys with funny things they said and even some of the things they pick up along the trail like bugs and rocks. Do one for each of your kids to keep your memories safe for years to come. Summertime gives you as many photo opportunities as it does adventures. Take a camera along and make pictures while you make memories.

Backyard Summertime Magic by Amity Shay Neff

S

ummer is filled with magic and promises of fruition. Flowers appearing overnight, fruits gracefully emerging from a tiny seed, but it’s the magic that we do not see, that creeps up on us overnight. The morning that the training wheels come off, the first swimming lesson, homemade popsicles and the first time sleeping under the stars. This is the wonder of our world awaiting to be discovered. Backyards are a mecca of all things summer. They are filled with towering tomato plants, bountiful flower gardens with hidden fairies, swimming pools, swing sets and sleeping bags.

Although our backyard has always been an excellent host to birthdays, holidays and friendly BBQ gatherings, summer is different. The backyard becomes a stage for the theatre enthusiast to drape lights on the fence and create a cardboard stage to become a stand up comic for the night. S’mores are not just for camping, they are a fire pit treat, and ice cream becomes a food group. A tent is no longer for sleeping, it has now become a space ship, bound for Mars because it has the best chocolate ice cream in the universe, says the four year astronaut. Random balls that

Gardens filled with brightly colored flowers are far more interesting when they are filled with hand painted fairy houses and covered with glittering stones, secretly awaiting a magic visit. Summer is about forgetting what time zone you live in, because the sun beckons for us to come out and make believe. In that moment, all corners of our world is filled with sunshine. Every meal is better in the backyard, even if it’s cereal and clean up is a breeze. Children that were frightened by the sight of green peppers are now pacing back and forth at the garden fence to get a chance to taste them. Reading is a pleasure under the leaves of a shady tree. Sparklers aren’t just for the fourth of July, they can paint a dark sky. A little blow up pool is now transformed into a sailboat filled with mighty sailors and fish. Rocks are eagerly hunted in order to paint and decorate to fill many gardens with blessings. Summer seems to free the creativity in both big and small. The cement becomes a canvas of chalk and once the rain

s e i t i v i t c A r e t Wa for Kids

by Jessica Weischedel

It’s getting hot out there, and the kids are wanting to play outside. Water can be an awesome tool in keeping your children entertained. Get creative with several crafty outdoor activities using water this summer. Here are a few suggestions!

Water Balloon PiĂąata

Frozen Popsicle Chalk

Materials Needed: Clothes line, balloons, water, and sticks to pop the balloons with. Instructions: Use balloons that aren’t as tough, so they are easier to pop for the kids. Fill them up with water, then tie them off before tying them to a clothes line. The clothes line should be tied to something strong enough to hold heavy water balloons, such as a sturdy fence post or tree branches. Give the children sticks to hit the balloons with, and watch them swing!

Materials Needed: Cornstarch, washable tempera paint, and popsicle molds. Instructions: Using half cornstarch, half water, and plenty of washable tempura paint in various colors, mix everything up until blended. This will be your sidewalk paint mixture. Pour this into popsicle molds, and freeze. Once frozen, let the kids take them outside on a hot, sunny day and paint away! Be sure to have their play clothes on, as this can get a little messy.

for kids

Bubble Art Project Materials Needed: Tempera paint, dish soap, drinking straws, watercolor paper, 16 oz. round containers, water, and newspaper for the mess. Instructions: Mix together about 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons of paint, and a few squirts of dish soap into each container. Add a drinking straw to each container and blow, creating bubbles. Make sure the kids know to blow and not suck through the straw. Once there are plenty of bubbles on top of the container, lay a piece of paper on top to create the art. The bubbles will pop, and create your masterpiece. Do this to several pieces of paper with various colors and see what you come up with.

Soap Boat Racing Materials Needed: Rain gutter (found at your local hardware store), soap bars, toothpicks, paper, hose and water. Instructions: Add a flag to your bar of soap in order to make it look like a boat by taping a pice of colored

paper to a toothpick and sticking it into the soap. Prop your rain gutter onto a table or something similar, then place the hose at the top and turn the water on. Set the soap boat at the top of the rain gutter and see how fast it goes. It might be fun to experiment with various water pressures and rain gutter heights to see how fast and slow the boats will go.

Frozen Treasure Chest Materials Needed: Plastic container, a variety of colorful toys and items, and water. Instructions: In a plastic container, place several colorful little items, such as prizes from an arcade machine, toy sea creatures and boats, etc. Fill the container with water, making sure a lot of the items float around so they don’t all freeze lumped together. Place the container in a freezer and let it freeze completely. Once frozen, you can give your child a project by telling them that their goal is to figure out how to melt the ice and retrieve the items inside the frozen treasure chest. Give them various tools to use, such as a salt shaker, a small hammer, a paint brush, or a small shovel. Watch and see how they use their brain to navigate the ice!

Not only that, but Tyson was counting on Grandpa Gene to take him on his first big hunt. So in defiance of Mom and Dad’s strict orders, and despite reports of a scary, stalking, man-eating grizzly named Sandy, the two sneak off to the Grand Tetons. Yes, there will be action, like shooting and dressing a six-hundred-pound elk. Is Tyson tough enough? There will be heart-pounding suspense: is Grandpa Gene too sick to handle the hunt, miles away from help? And, oh yes, there will be bears... Ages 10 yrs and up Candlewick Press

Subway Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin If her parents had never divorced, Laura wouldn’t have to live in the shadow of Bruce, her mom’s unpredictable boyfriend. Her mom wouldn’t say things like “Be groovy,” and Laura wouldn’t panic every weekend on the way to Dad’s Manhattan apartment. But when Laura spots a boy on a facing platform, lifting a camera to his face, looking right at her, Laura feels anything but afraid, and she can’t forget him. Jonas, meanwhile, thinks nonstop about the pretty hippie girl he glimpsed on the platform — trying to comprehend how she vanished, but mostly wondering whether he will see her again in a city of millions — and whether if he searches, he would have any chance of finding her. In a lyrical meditation on love, Nora Raleigh Baskin explores the soul’s ability to connect, and heal, outside the bounds of time and reason. Ages 14 yrs and up Candlewick Press

Three Bird Summer by Sara St. Antoine Every year since he can remember, Adam has spent his summers at his grandmother’s rustic cabin on Three Bird Lake. But this year is different. But she’s nice and easy to talk to, and she doesn’t mind acting silly or being quiet and dock sitting. And when Adam’s grandma starts to leave strange notes in his room — notes that hint at a hidden treasure somewhere at the lake and a secret love from long ago — Alice is the one person Adam can rely on to help find answers. The Hazards of Taking Your Dog Fishing by Dick Rogen, DVM Horizon Pet Care 1100 East Holly Boulevard, Brandon, SD 57005 • (605) 582-8445

I

think we take our dogs just about everywhere with us today. They take trips, go camping and even are welcomed in some restaurants. Today, I took Piper fishing. Fishing sounds like a harmless thing to do with your favorite four legged friend. But, it can be fraught with danger. I have experienced many of these hazards with my own dog or one of my patients. It appears that hooks have a magnetic pull towards any canine within 20 yards. They can be found attached to lips, ears and feet. Once those barbed hooks have embedded into the unsuspecting, they are not easily removed. Despite the efforts of everyone in the campground, most dogs require sedation and a little surgical help from their favorite Veterinarian. For some reason, hooks are so interesting, that some dogs decide to swallow them. I have removed hooks from the esophagus, stomach and intestines. If you ever see a hook go down, please

do not pull on the fishing line to retrieve it. It only gets harder for veterinarians to remove them. Our friend’s lab, Shooter, decided to eat a rubber frog with 2 hooks on it. Lucky for him, the entire lure passed 2 days later in one piece. If you fish from a boat, it opens an entire universe of opportunities for mayhem to occur. Several years ago on the Missouri River, a boat load of people started shouting and running with the net. I thought they had a record sized walleye on the hook. Up from the depths and into the net came a Dachshund. He was a little shaken and wet, but still in one piece. Millie, our Jack Russell, once leaped out the back of the boat nearly going through the prop. She was very lucky. I always recommend having a life jacket for your pet and to keep them on a leash or on your lap when the boat is moving. Now if you are a shore fisherman, you know that the first thing

your dog will find is a dead, rotting fish along the shore. It is an odor that does not go away easily. The wafting odor can last for days. Try using Dawn dish soap for the first bath to remove the oils holding the odor. Until last year, I thought that a bad smell was the worst thing that could happen. Then along came a poodle and a lab. They both decided to touch up there ambience by rolling on bullheads. The fin punctured their skin and became embedded deep into their bodies. There is a barb on their “stingers” that prevented us from removing them without surgery. Ah, the revenge of the bullhead! Dogs love spending time with their people. They enjoy the smells and adventures of camping and fishing. I think it is important to bring them along if it makes them happy. The last advice I have about taking your best friend fishing is to keep a close eye on your lunch.

Mound Builders Village By Bruce Blake

P Mound Builders Village Sioux Falls, Sherman Park

ioneer archeologist Dr. W. H. Over recorded that the prehistoric builders of the nearby Sherman Park burial mounds lived in a ten acre village on a lower terrace south of this location. This village extended west from 26th and Kiwanis Avenue to the Big Sioux River. These builders were of the Late Woodland culture (3000 to 1000 A.D.), and the village was a permanent year-round settlement with a farming economy. People of this period were the first in this area to use the bow and arrow and to grow maize (corn). They continued ritualistic customs of earlier periods including using mounds for interment. Burial mounds represented an elaborate form of ceremonial conduct. In 1922 Stringham Brothers contracted to grade the Minnehaha Country Club property at this site. Their plows turned up many old fireplaces and refuse heaps. Debris found included pottery fragments of the Woodland style, flint arrow points, knifes, scrapers, stone implements of several types, and crushed buffalo bone. These ancients secured food by primitive farming and hunting and by the gathering of edible plants, berries, acorns, and other nuts. After inspecting the site, Dr. Over observed “...It is evident that the village had been occupied for a long time.” DEDICATED IN 2000 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, ROBERT FROST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS.
