was launched with the help of a retail incubator program created by Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. Through the program, the young store owner receives a rent subsidy for 18 months, but more importantly, she also receives hands-on mentorship from a current downtown retailer. “I have been so fortunate to find such a great location for my business and to have the incredible mentorship from Nancy Savage. The support from the downtown community has made the store opening a fantastic experience.” Macziewski, who grew up in Sioux Falls, did some merchandising work for Savage at Child’s Play Toys, which is right next door. “Nancy is a great mentor,” says Macziewski. “It’s great that we can literally see each other through our store windows and talk every day. She’s really the one that showed me I could start a business.” For someone so young, Macziewski has already had some incredible experience in sports merchandising. She studied sports merchandising in Minnesota and Oregon before landing a job in merchandising with the Minnesota Vikings. She was offered a chance to further a career in NFL merchandising, but instead, she opted to come home and open her own business – and be closer to family, like her nephew Aaron that you’ll see in a few photos around the store. “I just saw such a need for this kind of store,” she says, “and having been in packed stadiums with fans dressed head to toe in

gear, I knew there was a real opportunity.” Her store carries professional licensed merchandise for the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. She’s the only retail location for the Sioux Falls Stampede. A League of Your Own also takes care of college fans, offering items from several local schools, as well as some from around the country. Macziewski ensures she has something for everyone, with sizes ranging from infant to 4XL, and she emphasizes quality sports brands like New Era, Adidas, Reebok, Majestic and 47 Brand. Things have been going so well already with 47 Brand that the company is looking to expand their presence in the store with branded fixtures and displays. The other fixtures in the store are a perfect complement to the century-old building – oversized wood tables, racks made from pipes, wood floors and vintage sports memorabilia. The store, which carries a sizeable selection of merchandise already, isn’t even using all of the space available…but Macziewski expects that may change as early as this summer. “I haven’t even been to market yet, so I know there will be opportunities to expand some of the lines,” she says. Picking the right products is important to Macziewski. “I really like to just find the right company or the right product and just go with it. Like cups, for instance. I really like the Tervis brand because of their quality, so that is what I sell.” Some of the unique items the store already carries include team-branded sippy cups, pacifiers and board books for little NFL and MLB fans. A League of Your Own is currently the only brick and mortar store in the country carrying items from S. Preston Art & Design, featuring minimalist sports art, and it has already been popular with customers. “I had a framed piece on the wall as part of the décor, and a customer came in and bought it,” says Macziewski. “I’m so excited to be the only store carrying his work and to have many other kinds of items that you can’t even find online.” Although she’s been putting in some long days since opening the store, Macziewski doesn’t mind. “I love what I do, and I love getting to know the customers, so I don’t even notice the time.”

helsey Shockman found a home in a central Sioux Falls neighborhood two years ago and fell in love with its charm. She and her fiancé Casey Ahlers call it their “little cottage.” Although it is an older home, Chelsey didn’t have to do any major renovation work when she moved in – a little paint here and there, and she did refinish the hardwood floors. “I love the floors, the plaster walls and the windows,” she

says. “I love all of the original pieces of the home and wanted to keep as much of that as possible.” The couple has used a mix of old and new to furnish the home, gathering pieces everywhere from flea markets to Pottery Barn. Right inside the front door is a nod to Chelsey’s love for vintage pieces, with an antique frame holding a collage of early 20th century greeting cards. She received it from her grandmother,

but it had originally belonged to her great-grandmother. A distressed-look mirrored frame hangs on the wall, and the surprise is that it opens to reveal a wall-mounted flat screen TV. “I really like the look of the mirror, and people are surprised when we open it up and the TV is in there, Chelsey says. While there are some contemporary furnishings in the home, the couple loves to find older pieces. “I love old furniture because it’s just so well made,” says Chelsey. “You know that when you find those pieces, you are

a backsplash. While most of the pieces used were small, there are a couple of particularly unique spots on the wall where you can see one full plate bottom and a cup that partially sticks out of the wall.

While the staircase leading to the upper level had a carpeted runner when Chelsey moved in, she removed it and restored the steps back to the original wood. Although the rooms and closets are smaller than what you might find in a newer home, the couple makes the most of small spaces and takes advantage of the unique architecture like the pitched ceilings and the built-in storage that is common in older homes.

In the master bedroom, additions like an over-the-door shoe rack and storage cubes on the closet shelf add additional storage space. The couple also built a free-standing clothes rack from old metal pipes.

Some of the interesting accessories in the room include a floral box light on the wall and an antique clock (Chelsey is a self-proclaimed fan of florals and old clocks). One conversation piece in the room is a framed copy of old

sheet music for the University of North Dakota fight song. “My dad played football at North Dakota State University,” says Chelsey, “but Casey played at UND. It’s a friendly family rivalry.”

Skip the Store Bought Sweets by Jo McClure Raspberries and cherries are always a hit for Valentine’s Day. Both these recipes require very little kitchen time so you will be free for romantic activities if they present themselves.

Raspberry Brownies

Cherry Almond Treats

1 package of brownie mix (9x13 inch pan size) 2 cups heavy cream 1 small box (3.3 ounce) instant white chocolate pudding mix 1 21 ounce can raspberry pie filling

1 cup margarine, softened 2 cups sugar 1 tsp salt 4 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp almond extract 3 cups flour 2 21 ounce cans of cherry pie filling

Bake the brownies in a 9x13 inch pan according to package directions and cool for an hour. Combine 1 cup cream and pudding mix in a small bowl and stir for 2-3 minutes or until the mixture is very thick. In another bowl, beat the remaining cup of cream until it forms stiff peaks. Fold the whipped cream into the pudding mixture and carefully spread over the cooled brownies. Top with the pie filling and cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours before servings. Serves 15-18.

Welsh Rarebit – By Jim Mathis

W

It’s Not Unusual

elsh singer Tom Jones found fame and fortune by singing “It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone. It’s not unusual to have fun with anyone.” But here we are, a half a century after the old crooner sang those words, and I’ve found myself defending another unusual export from the United Kingdom, the Welsh rarebit. This odd sounding dish has come up in conversation

34 nest | Man in the kitchen

several times over the last couple of months and it seems that this once popular meal has lost its way. Time for me to set the record straight. First of all, many of you are probably wondering what the heck is a Welsh rarebit, and I will admit the name does not sound terribly appealing, but it is better perhaps than its original name, but we’ll

“I knew I was on to something when I ordered it this way and the server told me he was jealous of my burger.”

get to that in a minute. A Welsh rarebit is a humble dish of melted cheese or cheese sauce on toasted bread. Not scary at all is it? Kind of like a grilled cheese sandwich with an accent. The origins of the dish go back to the 16th century in the British Isles where legend has it that the poor people of Wales couldn’t afford even the cheapest of meats, and subsided on caws pobi or roasted cheese. There is some debate, but most historians believe the original name was Welsh rabbit, even though it was meatless. Back then, the peasants were not allowed to eat the rabbits that the noblemen killed on hunts, so the melted cheese on toast became known as the Welsh Rabbit as a joke or insult to the poor. They couldn’t even afford the meat from a humble bunny. When I was growing up, my mom made a version of the Welsh rarebit with cheese sauce smothering a hamburger. It was pretty simple recipe; the rarebit sauce was made from a can of condensed cheddar cheese soup, a little water or beer, some mustard and Worcestershire sauce. The cheesy concoction was then poured over hamburgers on toast and served open-face. For my mom it was a quick and easy weeknight meal; for me, it was a favorite that I anticipated and requested often. Since we were not a poor Welsh family, our version had meat. The privilege of middle class! During college, I was working as a bartender and occasional cook at the Redman Inn in Indianola, Iowa. (I know it was a racist name, but I just worked there and it’s long since been changed.) The bar served a Welsh Rarebit Burger smothered in a thick cheddary beer cheese sauce with just a little tang of Worcestershire. The owner Cal Leonard used a whole hamburger

bun with layers of cheesy goodness. That meal was often my choice at the end of my shift, and if I was making my own in the kitchen, I would add some extra sauce on the fries too. Looking back, that may have been over-kill, but I was young. I discovered recently that Cal still serves that burger in his eponymous bars in central Iowa. If there is a sandwich or burger like this on a menu in Sioux Falls, I have yet to find it. Maybe it’s the name that turns people off, but trust me, it has appeal. Recently I’ve discovered that a little menu hacking at Taphouse 41 can make a reasonable facsimile. It’s taken me a couple of attempts, but I think I’ve figured out how to order one. Ask the waiter for your burger to be built from the bottom up like this: bun, burger, beer-cheese, beer-cheese, bun, beer-cheese. Then add a few dashes of Worcestershire to the top and dig in. This is of course a knifeand-fork-style burger, messy and delicious. I knew I was on to something when I ordered it this way and the server told me he was jealous of my burger. He remembered it on my return visit. I’ve also gotten a friend hooked; she proclaimed after she first tried it that she was going to go on a strict beer-cheese diet. From that point on, she declared that every meal should be smothered in cheese sauce. I’m pretty sure every time you eat a burger like this a cardiologist orders a bigger boat, but healthy resolutions were for last month. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When Jim is not eating something covered in cheese, he runs ADwërks, an ad agency in Uptown Sioux Falls.

I Love You —

Let Me Count the Ways by Riccardo Tarabelsi

H

ere’s a twist. I know that this is etc. for her magazine, but this is what I’d like you to do: after you read this article, leave the magazine open to this page, put it some place inconspicuous so that your significant other stumbles upon it, and then sit back and enjoy your special Valentine’s Day 2015. Here is my Top Ten List of wine-related things your man can get you this Valentine’s Day. Nothing says “love” like a corkscrew. But first, one of my favorite quotes: “Men are like fine wine. They start off like grapes, and it’s a woman’s job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d want to have dinner with.” Men, play close attention… and good luck! 10. Wine Charms These little decorative items are a hit with women who like

vino

to throw dinner parties. Wine charms are little ornaments that attach to the stem of the glass as an identifier. That way, after all the women go to the bathroom together and come back to a table full of glasses, they know whose is whose. 9. Wine Diary Here’s a good one if you know your significant other is a writer or wants to learn more about wine tasting. This diary allows her to take notes on all of the different wines she samples. By taking detailed notes, you can learn how to hone your palate and become more fluent describing wine. 8. Cookbook Pick one that focuses on a certain type of cuisine or regional cooking, for example Tuscany or Napa Valley. Make sure that the book includes lots of recipes that offer the option of cooking with wine. That way you can offer her the option of the two of

“Men are like fine wine. They start off like grapes, and it’s a woman’s job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d want to have dinner with.” you cooking together and drinking the leftover wine. I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food… 7. Tickets to a Wine Dinner I love wine dinners. Wine dinners are the best way to access a wide variety of wines at a good price that includes food and service too. You usually get to sample at least four different wines and a variety of food. Take her out to a wine dinner, instead of just dinner, and show her you care. 6. Riedel Stemware for Two A must for any wine drinker, regardless of expertise. Buy her a pair of Riedel wine glasses so that every time you drink wine with her, you are both getting the most out of your experience. Riedel is a company that designs and hand makes crystal glassware meant for specific types of wine. Visit your nearest wine store or visit www.riedel.com. 5. Cooking and Wine Pairing Night That’s right, fellas. It’s time to roll up your sleeves, do some research, and prepare a meal. No experience, no problem. You don’t have to be a professional to know how to boil water, drop some pasta, and make your own tomato sauce. She’ll melt when she sees you in an apron (the one that says Kiss the Chef,) and she will be really impressed when you pour the appropriate wine with your homemade meal. For ideas and help with your meal, talk to a chef. There are lots of great chefs in Sioux Falls, and they are always willing to help a guy in need. For wine pairing help, visit this link http://www.kj.com/assets/client/ File/wine_and_food_pairing_guide.pdf for some helpful food and wine pairing suggestions. 4. Room Makeover Room-what?! You heard me. Women love makeovers, especially if it’s one that will enhance the aesthetics of a room in the house. Offer to do a Wine Theme room for her. Convert a guest room, den, four-seasons room, or even a small part of a living room into a room full of wine paintings or prints, wine themed wallpaper or trim, a wine lamp, anything made out of corks (wreaths, coasters, etc.,) burgundy-colored candles, and if you’re going all-out, they even make chairs that are upholstered with fabric that has wine bottles and labels on it. Men like wine cellars, women like wine rooms. There’s a reason why she

watches HGTV while you’re watching ESPN. I’m sure you can think of another four letters to insert here, but it’s Valentine’s explore your feminine side. 3. Trip to Wine Country I recommend visiting Sonoma, more specifically Russian River Valley. They are making extraordinary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay there. It is well worth the trip to visit some very quaint wineries. If you’re cutting back on expenses this year (did you resolve to listen to Dave Ramsey?) then you can always rent the movie Sideways and take a trip to a local South Dakota winery. There are more around here than you might think. 2. Case of Wine There is nothing more impressive to your loved one than knowing what she likes. You not only know what brand of jeans she likes, but you also know the cut, style, and fit. You not only know what flavor of ice cream she likes, but you also know what toppings she likes and what kind of cone to get. You not only know what genre of music she likes, but you also know her favorite bands. This one is about knowing what she likes and going above and beyond just buying her a bottle of Riesling. Find out her favorite winemaker, winery, label, or whatever her most favorite is, and then buy her a case of it. It’s that simple. Impress her by knowing her. 1. Moscato d’Asti When all else fails, when you can’t think of something romantic, or you don’t know exactly what she likes, go with a Moscato d’Asti. There are too many different names of producers of Moscato to list them all, but if you go to your preferred wine store, they will be more than happy to help you out. Then you take that bottle to the one you want to be with, and you uncork for her. And as you are pouring this sweet, sparkling Italian wine, you say, “Let me count the ways…” Carpe Vino this Valentine’s Day! Riccardo will be counting the ways with his wife, Marybeth, while they count their blessings with their three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon. Riccardo is the VP of Sales and Marketing for Fernson Brewing Company, spreading craft beer cheer in Sioux Falls and beyond. Contact Riccardo at riccardo@fernson.com.

When Social Drinking Crosses the Line By Donna Farris for Avera Health

W

hen does social drinking cross the line into more dangerous realms of binge drinking and even addiction? Alcoholism can affect people from all walks of life, and even people who seem to have it all together aren’t immune. Social drinking is having one or two drinks with family and friends at gatherings such as a wine tasting event, wedding reception, tailgate party or evening out. “Moderate drinking” is defined by no more than one to two drinks a day, three to four times a week. One drink equates to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1 ounce of 100-proof liquor. Binge drinking is having any more than five drinks in one

setting, and addiction is when drinking becomes an obsession. “It becomes such an integral part of someone’s life, it’s like an intimate relationship. When you take away the drugs or alcohol, it’s a huge loss, and people struggle physically, psychologically and emotionally,” said Leah Rath, MA, LPC-MH, LAC, Outpatient Therapist with the Addiction Recovery Program at Avera Behavioral Health Services. Some people can engage in social drinking their whole adult lives and never run into problems. Others struggle from the getgo. Likewise, some people can stop when they first recognize their drinking is becoming a problem, and others can’t. “It’s

hard to know which one you’re going to be unless you come to that point,” Rath said. “There’s a genetic predisposition to addiction,” Rath said. For example, if you have a parent or sibling who struggled with addiction, you are up to four times more likely to become addicted. There are also environmental factors. “Some families have alcohol around often and consider it to be acceptable to overdo or become intoxicated. People who grew up around it are more likely to repeat those pathways,” Rath said. “Also, we tend to drink the way people around us drink. If people around us are

binging, we’re more likely to binge.” It’s the environmental factor of peer behavior that might lead high school and college students into binge drinking and partying – even though it’s illegal for those under age and unhealthy. “Many mature out of that stage, but those who don’t tend to have more potential to develop addictions. They are not able to learn to set limits,” Rath said. Rath pointed out the following warning signs of drinking that’s out of control: • You drink more than you intended to at a party or event.

• Your daily functioning is impacted by your drinking, for example, you’re late to work, or let your household chores go. • You use alcohol to manage your moods, calm your nerves, relax or get to sleep. • Your drinking worsens a chronic condition that you already have, such as diabetes or thyroid trouble. • Your social and personal life begin to revolve around alcohol, and if it’s not available, you try to figure out a way to get it. • You seek out friends whose social lives revolve around drinking. If use of alcohol or drugs or even gambling gets out of control, help is available. How much you drink and how frequently you drink helps determine what type of help is needed. Options

range from education about responsible use of alcohol, to individual counseling, outpatient treatment and inpatient care. Group settings designed around the 12-step program are helpful for many people. Some people might have difficulty seeing a drinking problem in themselves, but a close friend or family member has concerns. “Often it begins with making an appointment with a counselor to talk about your drinking, and explore what’s actually going on,” Rath said. ou can do just about everything in Poconos, Pennsylvania. Located in the northeastern corner of the state, the Poconos Mountain region is made up of 2,400 square miles of beautiful landscape bordering the Delaware River. The area covers four counties: Wayne, Pike, Monroe, and Carbon. These counties offer guests an endless array of recreation and relaxation. More than 340,000 people live in the Poconos year-round, and many more come to visit for an amazing time away from home. Forests, lakes, waterfalls, and quaint, historic towns can be found here, and it’s the perfect location for a family vacation or private weekend getaway. There are two major rivers in the Poconos, the Delaware and the Lehigh, and there are also several lakes, so the water activities are plentiful. Lake Wallenpaupack covers over 5700 acres, and is manmade by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company for the purpose of providing hydroelectric power. Six recreation areas

and 52 miles of shoreline provide for an ideal destination for camping, boating, canoeing, hiking, and more. There are also vacation homes available for rent, which can make for a very relaxing time. Lehigh River Gorge is where people enjoy one of the most popular activities in the Poconos: white water rafting. Rushing tides and churning rapids make for the perfect white water rafting experience. Known as the “Niagara of Pennsylvania”, Bushkill Falls has eight different waterfalls within wonderful forests and beautiful scenic views. The Main Falls boasts a 100-foot drop, with plenty of trails surrounding them for hiking and picnicking nearby. Daily canoe trips are offered by Kittatinny Canoes, for an exploration of the Delaware River and a spectacular perspective of nature. Kittatinny also offers the means for kayaking and white water rafting, as well as riverfront campsites. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a protected national park, and is the largest recreation area in the eastern United States, with

over 70,000 acres. Here guests can view the historic Millbrook Village, as well as the beautiful Dingman’s Falls. There are also watermarks available in the Pocono Mountains. Camel Beach Mountain Water Park offers thrilling rides on all types of slides, all season long. The H2000 Indoor Family Waterpark offers relaxing Lava Springs hot tubs and daring slides such as the Viper, Piranha, and Amazon Blast. One of America’s most successful family-owned indoor water parks, Kalahari Resorts, is coming to the Pocono Mountains in the summer of 2015. There are also many things to do for entertainment, such as enjoying live music, going to festivals, seeing comedy shows, and more. Several resorts, such as Camelback and Big Boulder, offer many things to do in Poconos. During the winter months, you will find busy ski lifts at these resorts as it is a popular ski destination for the sport lover. The mountains create a plethora of adventures to be had, such as hiking, horseback riding, skiing, and zip lining. Big Boulder Ski Area features winter sports such

as skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. There is plenty of space for skiers and tubers to spread out, with fifteen open ski runs and two boarding parks with rails. Five lifts, a family area, and single and double chutes make up the tubing area here, with trails for beginners all the way to advanced. Big Boulder also offers summer activities such as paintball, fly fishing, and local festivals. For those that love a great museum, there are a few to choose from. At the Asa Packer Mansion Museum, you can tour what was once the mansion of railroad tycoon and philanthropist Asa Packer. Built in 1861, this breathtaking home is made up of 11,000 square feet, including eighteen rooms with elaborate details such as a wrap-around porch, a red-ribbed tin roof, and mahogany wood carvings. The Pocono Indian Museum focuses on the history of the Lenape Indians, telling the story of these first inhabitants of northeastern Pennsylvania with artifacts from their day-to-day lives. is a popular attraction for those who like to raise their heart rate a bit. This gray stone building housed inmates from 1871 until 1995, when it was turned into a tourist attraction. The museum exhibits the prison’s early history, including the story of the prisoners involved in the Molly Maguire secret society. From gourmet to grub, guests will find several options for dining in the Poconos Mountains. The River Rock Inn & Restaurant was recently featured on Gordon Ramsey’s Hotel Hell, featuring quality American cuisine. The Settlers Inn at Bingham Park offers seasonal breakfast and a dinner menu that is decided into elements - earth, wind, water, and fire. It offers only the freshest and healthiest local ingredients, and takes pride in being a farm-to-table restaurant. Alaska Pete’s is one of Pocono’s most popular hangouts, with amazing steaks and some fantastic live music for entertainment. Sarah Street Grill also offers live music, as well as a game room, big screen televisions, and open mic opportunities. Another popular place for live music and tasty food and drinks is Barley Creek Brewing

Company, a local favorite that houses the brewery in an 1800s era farmhouse, with a Fermentation Lounge and game room. Penn’s Peak is a popular live event venue featuring a variety of performers, such as the Little River Band, Tanya Tucker, Randy Travis, and more. Poconos is also known as the honeymoon capital of the world, and offers couples-only hotels like Caesar’s Cove Haven, and romantic meals are offered at several of the local restaurants, including the French Manor Inn, which has heart-shape bathtubs and is known as the most romantic spot in the Poconos. This mansion sits on the top of the mountain, overlooking magnificent views, with a large spa menu and delicious French cuisine. Suites come with jacuzzis and fireplaces, and there are themed packages and weekends available, such as wine lovers, or murder mystery. In the Poconos Mountains, you can really do just about anything you want. You can relax, have a busy day full of excitement, or all of the above.

In the beginning, young children should be learning how to use their bodies. They should practice basic running, skipping, jumping and landing mechanics. Too often these fundamentals are overlooked, which can be detrimental as kids grow up. Start by introducing your child to a sport and intensity level that is age and skill appropriate. Just because the boy next door is involved in an intense, specialized training sports program does not mean your child needs to follow suit. Avoid the pressure to specialize in a single sport too early. Kids need to participate in a variety of sports to develop a strong foundation of athletic skills: speed, balance, and mental focus. This

Begin with the Basics

If you’re a mother, these are not words you want to see connected with kids’ sports. But all too often, they are. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. The benefits of children participating in sports are clear. Besides good physical health, kids can build self-esteem and confidence, get better grades, develop leadership skills, form friendships and simply have fun. So with the changing landscape of youth sports and society’s expectations, is it possible for your child to experience the good without the bad? Absolutely.

Burnout. Stressful. Dangerous. Intense.

Time to Specialize? There is no definitive answer to this question. You need to pay attention to the cues from your child and what he or she wants. As children enter their early teens, they may start to focus in more on one or two sports. It’s ok to show encouragement and support, and even help your child find a specialized training program. If you and your child feel a training program would be beneficial, make sure you do your homework. Find a program with trainers with appropriate certifications and experience – like ours at Sanford POWER. This ensures young athletes are learning techniques that are based on scientific principles supported by national organizations. Your child’s training program should be based on best practices and research, not guesswork. Secondly, programs should be designed around your child’s specific needs. No two children are alike, so no two training programs should be alike either. Individual goals should be set, to help your child find the most benefit from the specialized training. Make sure the program

Let Kids Be Kids Don’t ever forget that sports are meant to be fun for kids. They need time to rest, try new activities, and just enjoy being young and having fun. If your child seems overwhelmed or burdened by his or her sport of choice, it might be time to take a different path – either temporary or permanently. It could prevent burnout and serious injuries that could alter your child’s future – regardless of the sport. Introduce a different sport in the off-season that could complement what happens in the regular season. For example,

football players can find great benefit from yoga, or basketball players may find running helpful. Give them at least one to two weeks of complete rest – but your child may require more. This is essential to their overall health and well-being. Remember that children are not small adults, and they do not have everything figured out. Make sure you pay attention to your child’s behavior and talk about what’s going on, to keep them happy and healthy now and for their future.

and it’s ours alone. From the moment when I hear that whisper in my ear as the sun is still yawning, he is wanting me to start our day. He rises with sun and rests with stars. There is never a dull moment...only the love of learning and play. So what better way to celebrate Valentines day than spending all day together discovering, cooking, and creating. As the sun whispers hello to the dawn we will tip toe up the stairs to make heart shaped pancakes, which is one of his favorites. Little hands always seem to find themselves covered in something, so why not have it be flour? I would have never guessed his love for cooking, but it’s a special time with just me that he gets to create and get messy, while making something tasty. After we gobble up light and airy cakes of goodness, while he gloats with pride, we will rummage the craft closet and grab paints, play clay, paper and crayons. His eyes will twinkle as art supplies are unloaded on the table. First we will make painted bouquets of flowers using tied up celery and melted dripping crayons for stems. Then handprints are pushed gently onto construction paper in hopes of reminiscing how small they once were. Paint from head to adorable wiggly tickly little toes and it’s only 10am! We will create hand made valentines for each of the sisters while they are busy at school. A butterfly for Abby, a kitty for Riley and a love bug for Bria. Who knew the combination of

glue sticks and paper scraps would inspire such creativity? By the time I unstick him from the table, we will head back over to the kitchen to whip up some little cakes for a before-dinner surprise. Chewy candy hearts, chocolate chips and foil wrapped candies will await everyone to decorate their mini cakes. My little valentine and I will cuddle up on the couch, build a fort, read sweet stories and of course, play in the snow. After taking a well-deserved break, we will start our very own valentine exchange. Once the fun and games are over, we will all gather and make heart shaped mini pizzas. Valentine’s Day Tic Tac Toe Materials Needed: White, red, or pink poster board, a pencil, a black marker, red and pink felt, scissors, dry beans, a sewing machine or a hot glue gun.

Heart-Shaped Crayons Materials: Needed: Crayons, glitter, silicon heart-shaped mold, and an oven. Instructions: Remove the wrappers from the crayons, then break them into small pieces. Fill the silicon mold with various colors of crayon pieces, and add glitter if desired. Place the mold into an oven set to 300 degrees for 15 minutes or until the crayons completely melt. Let cool completely, then pop the melted crayon hearts out of the mold for some fun and creative gifts and decorations.

for kids

Instructions: Fold the poster board in half, then cut out a large heart shape. Open the heart and draw two vertical and two horizontal lines with a pencil in order to create your Tic Tac Toe game, then trace over it with a black marker. Use a ruler if you want perfectly straight lines. Using your scissors, cut hearts out of your pink and red felt, creating 10 pink and 10 red hearts if you plan to sew or hot glue them, or you can just have 5 of each color and decide not to make them into bean bags, although it’s much more fun with hearts filled with dry beans! To get the bean bag hearts, place two heartshaped pieces of felt together and either sew or hot glue around them. Make sure to leave at least an inch of space in order to fill them with dry beans. Fill your bags about half way full with beans, then close the hole with more thread or hot glue. You now have a fun Valentine’s Day game to play with family and friends.

Heart Suncatcher Materials Needed: Contact paper, a marker, scissors, masking tape, and tissue paper. Instructions: Using a marker, draw some hearts or one heart on contact paper, then cut them out. Tape them to a window, but keep the sticky side of the contact paper still covered, yet facing out. Once the heart shapes are taped up to the window, remove the sticky side cover. Give your kids pieces of tissue paper, which they can stick to the heart shapes on the window, making their own collage of tissue paper pieces in various colors. When finished, you have some beautiful Valentine’s day decorations in your windows, creating pretty colors with the sun.

I Love You “This” Much Card Materials Needed: Pencil, construction paper, a black marker, scissors, and glue. Instructions: Trace your child’s hand onto two pieces of construction paper, then cut out the hand shapes. Cut out a strip of construction paper and fold it accordion style. Using a sharpie, write “this much” on the strip of accordion paper. Next, write “I love you” on one of the hand shapes. Glue the ends of your accordion strip onto the insides of your hands, making sure the “I love you” writing is on the very top. Let dry completely, and your card is finished.

Pipe Cleaner Heart Glasses Materials Needed: Three pipe cleaners and scissors. Instructions: Using colors that represent Valentine’s day, bend one pipe cleaner in half to make a V shape, then bend the two ends together and twist to form a heart. Repeat with a new pipe cleaner to make a second heart, the same size as the first. Cut a 1/2 inch piece from a pipe cleaner, then use this to attach the two heart shapes together to create the rim of the glasses. Cut a new pipe cleaner in half, then attach each of these halves onto the outside of each heart to create the part of the glasses that goes over the ears.

Monkey and Elephant Go Gadding by Carole Lexa Schaefer Monkey and Elephant are very good friends, very good friends with nothing on the agenda. So they decide to go gadding. “Gadding?” said Elephant. “What’s that?” “Gadding,” said Monkey, “is walking along, looking around, finding something fun, stopping awhile, then moving on.” Along the way, Monkey and Elephant meet up with some old friends, and three new ones, too. I Can’t Hear You! by Dick Rogen, DVM Horizon Pet Care, 1100 East Holly Boulevard, Brandon, SD 57005 • (605) 582-8445

didn’t hear you say that! This is usually how the discussion starts at our house when the topic of selective hearing comes up. We all laugh about it, but “selective hearing” is alive and well in both people and pets. It often involves the decreased ability to hear, combined with a low desire to respond to the command. As pets age, there is a concern about if the elderly pet can hear. The most common symptom is that when coming home, your faithful companion does not even get off their bed to greet you. As our pets age, they do experience some central loss of hearing. Central loss of hearing means that the inner ear and cochlear nerves are less responsive to sound. This can occur with exposure to loud noises, infections, secondary to some medications and simply the aging process itself. It is always good to have their ears examined with video otoscopy. This involves using a camera to magnify and see the entire ear canal, ear drum and the health of the middle ear. Sometimes loss of hearing is due to simply a large wax plug. In other cases, there can be a low grade infection of the middle ear or scarring of the ear drum from chronic infections. Not every Veterinary Clinic has video otoscopy, but it is the only way to thoroughly examine the ear.

If everything is normal, then what else can be occurring? For some of my patients, it is arthritis. If their joints or back are sore, they may be in too much pain to get up. Controlling the pain and discomfort of arthritis has allowed many patients to return to normal life. There are many medications, nutriceuticals and physical therapies that can give your pet their life back. I like to formulate an individual plan for each patient that best fits their needs. Now comes the hard truth about selective hearing...sometimes we are just not that exciting. I know its hard to believe, but Piper just does not think my arrival is that big of a deal anymore. I always ask if the pet can still hear the refrigerator door open or their food bowl being filled. It is the gold standard test. Piper values a snack above me every day. As Valentine’s Day approaches, controlling selective hearing will keep Dick out of the dog house! It seems that when my wife has a list of projects, my hearing has been poor lately. I honestly did not hear the request to pick up my clothes or replace the light bulb in the bathroom. I can’t blame arthritis, illness or a wax plug. I did hear the refrigerator open. Is it supper time? Happy Valentine’s Day and do your best to listen this month!

Human Timeline By Bruce Blake

Human Timeline Sioux Falls, Falls Park

bout twelve thousand years ago, as the Wisconsin glacier retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, the first humans came into this region. These nomadic hunters pursued mammoths and other large mammals. Now known as PaleoIndians, their spears were tipped with fluted stone points. They were replaced about 5500 B.C. by Archaic hunter-gatherers whose way of life focused on hunting smaller game and harvesting wild plants. About 2000 years ago, Woodland peoples moved here, introducing pottery, earth lodge villages, burial mounds, and the bow and arrow. Plains Village groups were the next to arrive. They cultivated large gardens and built sizable permanent communities. About 500 A.D., ancestors of the Missouri River Mandan lived in a fortified village near Brandon, and in the 1500s, a large Oneota settlement spanned the Big Sioux River at Blood Run. By the mid-1700s, the Sioux, a nomadic Plains group, displaced the less militant permanent villagers. Lastly, Sioux Falls city was founded by Euroamerican settlers who arrived in 1856. DEDICATED IN 2003 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE CITY OF SIOUX FALLS, AND MIDCONTINENT FOUNDATION.

Mammoth Skeleton This skeleton of a Columbian mammoth is 12 feet high at the shoulders. A mammoth this large needed 300 lb. of food each day and was continually foraging. With their specialized trunk and teeth, mammoths were well equipped to ingest large quantities of food. One mammoth provided much meat and fur, both highly prized by PaleoIndians. Individual animals supplied sufficient meat for two weeks during the warm seasons, and possibly for months during the winter months if properly frozen and cached.

The front page headline story of the October 11, 1938, Daily Argus Leader, was the report of a “baby earthquake that jarred Sioux Falls in the early morning hours.

All mammoths were completely vegetarian. It is estimated that they may have spent up to 20 hours each day in fueling their great bulk. Like elephants today, mammoths used their trunks to feed themselves. Image owner: Archeology Lab, Augustana College.
