BREAST RECONSTRUCTION

Breast reconstruction is preformed for several different reasons. It is done after the removal of one or both breasts for the treatment of cancer. It can also be done alone with mastectomy for preventative treatment in women with a strong family history of cancer. In some young women one breast never develops and reconstruction is done to give symmetry to the underdeveloped side. The overall goal in reconstruction is to help a woman feel more natural and more confident in their appearance following mastectomy. There are three main procedures used for breast reconstruction.

ith the wide array of brick-and-mortar stores plus retail websites available these days, it can be a bit overwhelming to do your gift shopping. How can you find something that is just right for that special person? Help is here, thanks to Julie Prairie and her team at Painted By Prairie in the center court of The Empire Mall. Her seasonal kiosk offers personalized gifts to suit every special occasion, from weddings and new babies to birthdays, faith-inspired celebrations, holidays and more. Prairie started this new adventure during the 2014 holiday season. As a well-known photographer in the area, she already had a mall kiosk for her business, Julie Prairie Photography. The notion of opening a second business hadn’t even been in the

back of her mind, until one day when she was approached by mall management. “I was asked if I knew anyone who did personalized Christmas ornaments and other personalized gifts,” says Julie. “The previous business owner who offered that at the mall had left to pursue other interests. So, I looked into it, thought about a business plan and decided I could do it.” Painted By Prairie had its first holiday season at the Empire Mall in November and December of last year. “We had a great season with our Christmas ornaments last year, and we had a lot of requests from customers for other types of personalized gifts,” says Julie. With that in mind, Julie went off to market and came back with

a collection of gift items that make the perfect personalized gift. Painted By Prairie opened for the season in August and will be at the mall through the end of the year. One of the most popular gifts for kids is a great, old-fashioned piggy bank. But, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the fun designs Julie’s team can personalize – from traditional blue or pink designs to princess, sports, farm and pirate-themed pigs. Her staff can also add personal touches to frames, magnet boards, signs or colorful pails. “99% of what we offer here can be personalized,” says Julie. “Our staff is great. They love art, and they are constantly practicing their lettering to ensure our customers are happy.” One hot seller that isn’t a personalized item is the “Whiffer

hen you go to the door at the home of Danette Schaal Voshage, don’t be surprised if you are greeted by someone other than the homeowner. It might be the smiling face of first grader Dakota, or the equally friendly – but furry face of Flip, the English springer spaniel. Flip is all fun and energy, much like his namesake, comedian Flip Wilson. “The breeder is Sally Maxwell, and she had this litter of puppies,” explains Danette, “and she named each one after a character from the old Rowan and Martin Laugh-In television show.”

This house in the southern part of the city was a coming home for Danette, who grew up here but then lived in Colorado and Florida. She and Dakota moved back three years ago after she lost her husband, Gene, to cancer. “I just needed to be close to family, and it seemed like the right thing to do,” she says. Danette and Gene had a great partnership during their 18 years of marriage. Gene was a custom home builder, and Danette got her real estate license so they could work together.

“This bathroom had an orange ceiling and white walls, so it got a floor to ceiling makeover,” she says. Danette used a product called Paper Illusions, which is a faux finish wallpaper. By tearing the pieces of wallpaper into random shapes, you can easily create the look of faux painting finishes like granite, marble or a fresco look.

One of the first rooms off the entryway and down the hall is a bathroom. For the most part, Danette didn’t have to do substantial renovating when they moved in to the house, which was built around 2001. However, she decided this was one room she wanted to update. “This bathroom had an orange ceiling and white walls, so it got a floor to ceiling makeover,” she says. Danette used a product called Paper Illusions, which is a faux finish wallpaper. By tearing the pieces of wallpaper into random

shapes, you can easily create the look of faux painting finishes like granite, marble or a fresco look. The entire house has a French country feel with wood floors and lighter wood for the cabinetry. Danette says this was a real change from the houses she and Gene built and sold in Colorado, where they worked most often with darker woods like cherry (side note: they moved more than 30 times just in Colorado!). “I really like the lighter and more open feel now.”

in the corner, the room still has a homey feel with light-colored wood beams overhead as well as a stone and brick fireplace. An oversized, ornate mirror leans against one wall. That mirror is well-traveled, as it made all of the moves from Colorado to Florida and back to South Dakota.

During the holidays, Danette and Dakota put their giant Christmas tree (over 10 feet tall) in front of the living room window. “We love putting up the tall tree,” laughs Danette, “but it’s definitely more than a one-man job!”

When she and Gene were starting out, she says, their style was very contemporary. Over the years, though, they started transitioning more and more to the traditional. For example, in the formal dining room stands an antique oak icebox. Gene and Danette had seen similar pieces in other

places, and she thought her parents still had one from her grandmother. She was right. “My grandmother bought it from her uncle for $5,” she says. “My parents gave it to us, and we refinished it, making sure we left the original Rhinelander label plate on it.”

On the other side of the entryway from the dining room is Danette’s office. While officially retired from real estate, she still does some work with properties she and Gene owned in Florida. Here in the office space, which has a completely open ceiling, she enjoys having built-in cabinets along one wall for storage,

when I moved in, and I just decided it was time to start adding more colors to the house.” Special touches accent the room. The focal point, though, is Danette’s wedding gown, displayed on a dress form in the corner with the earrings she wore clipped to the neckline.

“I actually helped design the dress,” she says. “And, I decided this was better than just having it sit in a closet somewhere.” She and Gene had been married in Minnesota but made their first move to Colorado before their first anniversary. They were there for 15 years, followed by three years in Florida.

Wabbit Season? No, Duck Season! By Jim Mathis

emember the old Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoon where Daffy and Bugs fought over whether it was duck season or wabbit season? Meanwhile, old Elmer Fudd stood there befuddled. Well, if the man (and possibly the boys and dogs) in your house are getting excited because the weather is

changing and the ducks are beginning to migrate, you already know the answer to that question. Before the much ballyhooed pheasant season opens (on the same weekend this publication holds its woman’s expo) the boys get up early to go duck hunting.

Before the much ballyhooed pheasant season opens (on the same weekend this publication holds its woman’s expo) the boys get up early to go duck hunting.

While I don’t hunt ducks as often as I used to, I still get out into the marsh enough to put a few ducks in the freezer. Then the question is not what season is it, but what to do with all of those ducks? Like a lot of wild game, duck and goose can be an acquired taste. And even if you really like the domestic duck from restaurants or the grocery store, wild ducks tend to have a much more intense, gamy flavor. That wild taste can turn many people off, and because of that, a lot of people either don’t eat the game they bring home, or they find ways to mask the taste. Way too often goose or duck recipes start with multiple cans of cream of mushroom soup, and

that is really only good for the people at Campbell’s. For that last several years I’ve taken a duck hunting trip down to Cherry Ridge Duck Camp south of Lafayette, Louisiana. While we are there, a wonderful cook named Peanut takes care of all of our food, and we always request his famous duck and sausage gumbo. A Cajun/Creole favorite, his gumbo uses local sausage and the ducks that hunters leave behind. I’ve tried to recreate it several times, using the same ducks and the same sausage and the recipe that Peanut wrote out in his own hand, but somehow it’s not the same. I’m not sure if he left out a key ingredient so I’d keep coming

back, or maybe there’s some magic in the way he stirs the roux. Perhaps that beat up old pot he uses adds its own seasoning. All I know is Ol’ Peanut makes some good gumbo. I’ll be back. So back to the question of what to do with all of those ducks that are showing up in your kitchen. While Peanut’s gumbo is great, I’m sharing another of my favorite recipes, even though I can’t take credit for it. Duck stroganoff is a dish my mom used to make, but I think she got the recipe from her Aunt Shirley or Uncle Ed. I’m really not sure which because Ed was an avid duck hunter and I think he claimed it was his recipe, but I’m pretty sure it was Shirley that did all of the cooking. Either way it’s a rich and hearty meal, and because it cooks for a while, it helps to mellow the intense taste of the wild game. You can use ducks or geese, whatever the boys bring home!

Duck or Goose Stroganoff Breast meat from 1 goose, 2 large ducks (mallard or pintail) or 4 small ducks (teal) cut into half inch pieces 1/2 cup flour with one teaspoon each salt and pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (Cremini work well) 1/2 cup red wine 1/2 cup beef stock 12 or 16 ounce package of egg noodles 1/2 cup sour cream Coat the breast meat pieces in flour mixture and brown in a large skillet with olive oil, then remove from pan. Sauté onions, garlic and mushrooms in olive oil. Deglaze the pan with wine and add meat back into the pan along with the beef stock. Simmer, stirring frequently for about an hour. Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Just before serving, stir sour cream into stroganoff. Serve over the noodles.

That chill in the air? Those leaves starting to turn? You know it’s time for one hunting season or another. So when you find yourself with a brace of ducks and don’t know what to do with them, try some stroganoff. Unless you happen to know an old Cajun named Peanut, then leave the task to him. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When Jim’s not in the kitchen, he’s creating ads and marketing communications for his clients at ADwërks his ad agency in downtown Sioux Falls.

Experience at the expo for her hat do you think of when I say the name “Beringer?” Undoubtedly, the first thing that comes to one’s mind is “White Zinfandel.” Upon deeper review of this legendary winery, and perhaps my wife’s recent fascination with Downton Abbey (yes, I’m hooked,) I discovered a long, rich history that not only defines Beringer’s commitment to quality, but defies the idea that Beringer’s only claim to fame is the inordinate amount of White Zin it produces and sells. This month, I invite you to join me at the expo for her, where I will guide you through the steps of wine tasting. I’d like to thank Beringer in advance

for supplying the wines for the event. Come and experience a taste of wines from Napa Valley’s oldest continuouslyrun winery. For now, take a step back in time with me and witness the historic milestones of Beringer.

1875 – Jacob Beringer and his brother Frederick purchase 215 acres in St. Helena for $14,500. This parcel of land, known first as Los Hermanos (The Brothers,) will become the heart of the Beringer estate. 1876 – The Beringer Brothers oversee their first harvest and crush. 1915 – Jacob Beringer passes away, and the winery comes under the care of Charles and Bertha Beringer, two of Jacob’s children. 1920-1933 – The winery continues to operate through Prohibition under a federal license that allows wine to be made for religious purposes, so Beringer could sell sacramental wine to churches. 1934 – Prohibition is repealed, and Beringer becomes the first winery

to offer public tours, sparking wine tourism in Napa Valley. 1940 – Hollywood stars like Carole Lombard and Clark Gable visit the winery, and Beringer sells 40,000 cases of wine a year throughout the decade, which was a respectable figure for the time. 1967 – The 91-year-old Beringer Winery is named a State Historical Landmark. 1972 – The Rhine House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

1977 – Beringer begins fermenting Chardonnay and Cabernet in French oak barrels. 1984 – Ed Sbragia is promoted to Winemaker, becoming only the sixth person to hold the position in Beringer’s history. 1990 – Wine Spectator names Beringer 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon #1 Wine of the Year. 1996 – Wine Spectator names Beringer 1994 Chardonnay #1 Wine of the Year.

Not only is the first time a white wine has garnered this coveted award, but Beringer now has the distinction of being the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year. 2001 – Beringer’s 125th anniversary, making it the oldest continuously operated winery in Napa Valley. 2004 – Maximus, the world’s largest bottle of wine, is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The bottle, which contained 173 bottles of Beringer 2001 Private Reserve

Cabernet Sauvignon, sold for $47,500 at a charity auction. 2012 – Beringer expands into Central Coast; Wine Spectator names the Beringer 2009 Knights Valley Reserve #8 Wine of the Year. With such a long and awarded history, Beringer has become one of the top wineries in California. Join me at this year’s expo for her and enjoy some of these wines while learning about them at the same time. Oh, and we’ll have some fun too… Carpe Vino!

Finishing the Fight Against Breast Cancer –

A Survivor’s Story B

reast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. And while it remains the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, it’s estimated there are approximately 3.1 million women living in the U.S. with a history of invasive breast cancer. Sioux Falls resident Jackie Fischer is one of those women. Fischer was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive breast cancer in June 2013. The diagnosis was soon all-consuming as she scheduled doctors’ appointments and was forced to learn many new and complex medical terms. Just a few weeks later, she started her treatment, which included a double mastectomy and six rounds of chemotherapy that would cause the loss of her hair. She was also in and out of the hospital with a sickness that couldn’t be explained. A second surgery determined she had developed an infection as the result of the reconstructive portion of her mastectomy. But Fischer is a fighter, and she’s joined with the American Cancer Society to fight back against breast cancer. On October 11, she will participate in their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Sioux Falls to raise awareness and funds, as well as provide hope to all people touched by the disease. “It means the world when a survivor or someone battling breast cancer shows up to see so many people there to support them. It’s such a simple reminder that they’re not alone – there’s an entire community hoping and praying for a cure,” Fischer stated. Today, Making Strides walks are held in nearly 300 communities nationwide and make up the largest network of

breast cancer awareness events in the nation. Funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to finish the fight against breast cancer by: • Investing in groundbreaking research to better understand, prevent, find, and treat the disease. • Providing free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer where and when they need it. • Helping people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. The reconstructive procedure that Fischer needed was only available through a medical team in New Orleans. With her best treatment option far from home, she and her caregiver stayed at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in New Orleans for two weeks. “The American Cancer Society offered services like the Hope Lodge that I didn’t even know existed. That’s why I walk in the Making Strides event. My recovery and journey were helped tremendously by the work of the American Cancer Society and its volunteers. It’s what I can do today to help make a difference.” Fischer knows first-hand that there’s still more to do. “Cancer is scary, finding a cure is necessary, and by woring together with the American Cancer Society, I know we’re getting closer every day.” For more information about breast cancer or to get involved, contact the American Cancer Society at cancer.org or 1-800-2272345.

Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness: Cindy’s Story By BryAnn Becker Knecht, Avera Health

W

hen Cindy Foerster of Brookings found a lump on her breast in July 2013, the last thing on her mind was cancer. She was looking forward to celebrating her five-year wedding anniversary with her husband, Matt. Cindy had doubts about whether it could be breast cancer — she didn’t have a family history, she was only 36, and her most recent checkup had uncovered no concerns. However, she knew it was important to have it checked out. “The hardest part was waiting for the results. You worry for your kids and family,” she said. Cindy and Matt have two children: Ethan, 5, and Kahlei, 3. The diagnosis came back as stage III breast cancer. Looking back at that scary, anxiety-filled time, Cindy encourages other women facing a breast cancer diagnosis to trust their care team. “Go to your oncologist. Know that you’re in great hands,” she said. Cindy received care from Amy Krie, MD, Avera Medical Group Oncology & Hematology Sioux Falls. Spending time with family and friends helped Cindy through her course of treatment. Her immediate family traveled to Sioux Falls to be with her during her chemotherapy sessions. Her sister made the trip from Hawarden, Iowa, and her mother and brother came from Hudson, S.D. “We’d try to make it fun and go out for a good dinner or go shopping afterward,” Cindy said. “It gave me something to look forward to.” After completing chemotherapy on Jan. 2, 2014, Cindy had a double mastectomy and then received daily radiation therapy.

LISA'S PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZING SERVICE Cindy recalls the challenges of making the daily drive during the winter from Brookings to Sioux Falls for radiation therapy. The weather was unpredictable, and it was tax time, noted Cindy, who works for a Certified Public Accountant. She later underwent reconstructive surgery, and all of her checkups since have been good. Cindy is now an “Avera Pink Lady,” advocating for breast cancer awareness and early detection. Her advice to other women is to pay attention to any changes in your body. “If there’s a concern, just go in,” she said. Cindy is also passionate about raising money for breast cancer. She helped organize her first annual sloppy joe and silent auction fundraiser on March 21 in Brookings. The event raised more than $17,000 for Cindy’s Avera Race Against Breast Cancer team, Cindy’s Pink Posse. Cindy chose the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer as a cause to support because it was important to her that the money would support local communities. Avera Race Against Breast Cancer funds are used to enhance cancer care for individuals in Sioux Falls and surrounding communities.

Newest Technology Once women hit age 40 they should make mammogram screenings part of their wellness regimen. But for some women, the process can be stressful if an area of concern or questionable mass is found and more testing is necessary. The latest technology — 3-D mammography — is providing better images of the breast to cut down on return trips for additional tests. Women who receive a 3-D mammogram are 15 percent less likely to be called back for more testing. Given a majority of callbacks turn out to be non-cancerous, this has

IT’S TIME FOR THE COLORS TO CHANGE

Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, 3-D mammography takes several images from multiple angles. Certain women will especially benefit from 3-D mammograms — women with dense breast tissue, those who have experienced call backs for diagnostic imaging, and women at high risk: family history of breast cancer, lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), atypical hyperplasia, and/or difficult breast exams.

When it Comes to Orthopedic Medicine, Sometimes it’s Déjà vu All Over Again Orthopedic Institute

O

ne acorn fell from the tree, right into the arms of the orthopedic surgeon who had treated his mother years earlier. That happened when three-year old Oliver Schock stood up on a slide in his back yard, tumbled off, broke two bones in his right arm, and landed in the office of Walter Carlson, MD. That acorn didn’t fall far from the tree. Years earlier, his mom, Callie, ended up in Dr. Carlson’s office, although in a less dramatic fashion. Callie Shock, then Callie Fritz, was just five when she first saw Dr. Carlson after a routine school screening had identified that she might have a curvature of the spine known as scoliosis. Specialists confirmed the diagnosis and Callie’s parents sought out Dr. Carlson. “He was THE name,” said Callie, remembering the advice she and her family had gotten. “As soon as it was anything to do with scoliosis or major surgery, he was THE name, THE expert.” Once in the care of Dr. Carlson, Callie began treatments, continued with school and continued playing softball and basketball. But the treatments weren’t working. Callie was developing a hump and she was headed toward a crossroads: a body brace or surgery. It was an important decision. “My grandmother had scoliosis,” said Callie, “and she ended up crippled.” A fate that could have awaited Callie. The whole idea of surgery sounded scary. But, after some soul searching, Callie’s parents decided on surgery. Spinal fusion, the surgery Callie needed, was not a common surgery and Dr. Carlson was the only one in Sioux Falls at the time who had the expertise to perform the procedure. “I was specially trained to do that,” said Dr. Carlson, who has a Fellowship in

80 mind – body – spirit |

Pediatric Orthopedic and Scoliosis from the Scottish Rite Hospital. Good thing, too, because it is a complicated surgery. “Dr. Carlson restructured my spine,” said Callie, “He put in a metal rod and braced it up and down with smaller horizontal rods and fused several vertebrae in place.” And the results? “It changed my life for the better,” said Callie. “I was immediately 2 inches taller.” Which was a nice side benefit for Callie, now 5’9”, who played center on the basketball team. “Dr. Carlson just knew what he was doing,” said Callie. “He has great knowledge in a very complicated field.” Callie received ongoing care from Dr. Carlson and he eventually removed the rods. And Callie moved on with her life. She completed her undergraduate and graduate education, married Jered Schock, who works for Cisco Systems, taught school in Sioux Falls, served as Children’s Ministry Director at her church and had three boys, Oliver being the youngest. After Oliver came along, Callie scaled back to substitute teaching and volunteering at her church. Which brings

us to that fateful moment, last Father’s Day, when Oliver climbed his slide and took the plunge. Since it was after hours their first stop was an acute care clinic where Jered and Callie were told that they would need an orthopedic surgeon. Callie wanted to go to the Orthopedic Institute where Dr. Carlson now practices. The Schocks chose Dr. Carlson because, once again, he had advanced training in pediatric orthopedics. And as for the Orthopedic Institute, Oliver loves it. “My son loves going there because he loves the toys,” said Callie. “In fact, the nurse brought toys back to the exam room which just delighted Oliver.” Callie is a fan, too. “I love it there,” she said. But most of all Callie is grateful to Dr. Carlson. “I went from sleeping on the floor on a cutting board to being able to function and go through life mostly pain free,” said Callie. And there is a side benefit all moms appreciate. “We don’t have to go to Minneapolis,” said Callie. “We have an expert right here.”

hen Fall arrives in Philadelphia, it means vibrant foliage, crisp autumn air, delicious seasonal foods, and some of the most popular events of the year. Here are just a few options for visitors to the gorgeous Pennsylvania city. For those who like a good scare, they can visit one of the nation’s largest and top-rated haunted attractions, Terror Behind the Walls. Located at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood, this castle-like structure was once the most famous and expensive prison in the United States. Now empty, it is the perfect setting for a frightening and haunting experience. Hollywood-quality special effects and over

The most interactive option is the Machine Shop, which leads visitors deep into the cellblocks with unique one-on-one experiences. Lock Down is another attraction at Terror Behind the Walls, which includes a riot in Cellblock 12, which is said to be the most haunted spot in the prison. A disturbing 3-D funhouse, a pitch-black trip through narrow penitentiary hallways, and a tour of prison medical treatment are all included in this terrifying journey. For those who need even more of a thrill, they can take the After Dark VIP Tour, which is an hour-long guided walking tour of the historical prison with just a flashlight. For a date night,

Live music and vendors selling Asian goods and dragon boat paraphernalia are available to visitors during the festival, which is the largest of its kind in North America. Held in the spring and the fall, the Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival & Restaurant Week highlights neighborhood eateries, food trucks, and entertainment. More than 50 of the city’s top food trucks, shops, and restaurants are featured during the festival, with seasonal treats, live entertainment, sidewalk sales, and a beer and wine garden on Cotton Street. Following the StrEAT Food Festival, Manayunk Restaurant Week lasts for two weeks and features special menus at certain local restaurants, creating affordable nights out in Manayunk, with menu items inspired by the festival’s star ingredient, apples. Sesame Place is the nation’s only theme park based entirely on Sesame Street, and it celebrates its 35th birthday in 2015. Located just 30 minutes north of Philadelphia, Sesame Place offers rides, slides, a Neighborhood Birthday Party Parade, and more. Planet Elmo in Elmo’s World, interactive character shows, and The Count’s Splash Castle or just some of the attractions available to all visitors who come to Sesame Place. Every fall, it is transformed into The Count’s Halloween Spooktacular, which isn’t too scary, but is themed in Halloween style. A Sesame Street character hayride, a themed maze, and costumes galore will get everybody into the Halloween and autumn spirit as they experience the park. When Christmas comes around, Sesame Place is transformed into A Very Furry Christmas, which is a family-friendly celebration in a winter wonderland, with seasonal entertainment, sparkling lights, and holiday music. Families can even enjoy a holiday-themed meal with Elmo and Santa Claus. Why not make a vacation out of this amazing time of the year and experience all this magnificent city has to offer? There are so many more festivals and events taking place in and near Philadelphia during the fall season.

safe fit for your kids where they can have fun and be cared for in a stable and nurturing environment. Making arrangements for someone to look after your children is

a big decision for parents. Your children will be influenced by the people and environment that surrounds them, so picking a place where they feel comfortable and safe is key. “Even in just one town, there are many places to choose from,” says Nancy Free, DO, a child abuse specialist. “And that can be overwhelming for a parent. But do your research, make calls, talk to other parents, and follow your instincts. If a place or staff member doesn’t feel right, then it probably isn’t.”

Child Care in Your Own Home

There are three basic types of child care services: child care centers, child care homes and child care in your own home.

This type of care takes place in your own home. The caregiver may be a babysitter, a professional nanny trained to care for young children, a student “au pair” who lives in your home, or another caregiver who has some experience with young children. You need to check references very carefully before inviting a caregiver into your home. When using in-home care, you become an employer, which requires special considerations. As an employer, you are responsible for Federal Unemployment Insurance and Social Security taxes. In many states you must provide Workers’ Compensation and State Unemployment Insurance.

Child Care Centers

Finding Quality Care

A child care center provides care for groups of children by a staff of caregivers. The staff should have some type of early childhood education training. Centers are also generally licensed by the state. Centers are either privately operated for profit by a chain or individual, or operated by non-profit agencies, such as churches, public schools, government agencies, or non-profit vendors.

Once you have a list of places assembled, it’s time to ask a few questions. And when it comes to daycare, being picky is good! Call each one and be prepared to conduct a short phone interview. Ask about their hours, sick care, group sizes, number of caregivers, ratios and policies. After making your calls, hopefully you will be able to narrow it down to your top two or three choices. These are the places you will want to visit in person. When you take your tour, bring a checklist with you. Look for things like if the area is clean, safe and childproof. Are the caregivers actively involved with the children? Is there a schedule of activities posted? Is the discipline fair without

Child Care Homes A child care home provides care for a small group of children in the caregiver’s home. These homes are registered or licensed in most states.

yelling or hitting? Are the children supervised at all times? Most importantly, how did you feel when you were there? Did it feel safe? Would you feel comfortable leaving your child there? If you have picked your favorite after the visits, now is the time to ask for references, preferably from parents or kids who currently use the daycare facility. You will want to contact these people directly to get their impression and experiences with the staff and center or home. Ask if they’ve ever heard of cases of abuse or neglect within the center.

A Safe Place And while you can do all the research, no place is perfect. If you have concerns that your child has been abused or neglected, contact Child’s Voice, which is part of Sanford Children’s Hospital. They are a nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center that provides medical evaluations for children who may have been victims of abuse or neglect. The primary goal of all children’s advocacy centers is to ensure that children disclosing abuse are not further victimized by the intervention systems designed to protect them.

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

Child’s Voice provides a family consultation, forensic interview, medical exam, advocacy and crisis counseling. Throughout the entire process, everything is done in a childfriendly and culturally respectful manner. If you have concerns about your child’s daycare environment, call Child Protective Services at (877) 244-0864.

Check the Numbers When you send your child for care out of your home, there are strict guidelines for child to staff ratio. Consult the chart below from the National Association for the Education of Young Children to see what are the appropriate ratios for your kids.

Spooky Crafts for Kids Pipe Cleaner Spiders Materials: Black and orange pipe cleaners, small beads. Instructions: Take four pipe cleaners and line them up together. Bend them all at once in the middle, then twist several times to make the spider’s body. To make the legs, separate the ends of the pipe cleaners from the body you just created. Next, slide two beads onto each leg, getting them close to the body. Bend each leg about an inch down from the body, and slide on two more beads where the bend is made. Bend the legs about another inch down from the last bend, and slide on two more beads. Adjust the legs as needed.

Footprint Ghost Canvas Materials: Paint brush, sponge, craft paint in black, white, and orange, canvas of desired size, and some stencil letters that spell out “boo”.

Instructions: Paint your canvas black ahead of time and let dry completely. Paint your child’s foot with white paint using a sponge or paint brush, then press the black canvas to the foot or have your child step carefully onto the canvas, with the toes pointed towards the bottom. Any spots that don’t get covered can be touched up later with a dab of paint. Paint two small eyes and a mouth with black paint on the heel of the foot print. It is up to you what you would like to paint in addition to the foot print. Stencil letters come in handy to create a more professional look and feel, and the words “boo” are perfect for a footprint ghost character.

Egg Carton Bat Craft Materials: Egg carton, scissors, googly eyes, orange or black ribbon, glue, and black spray paint. Instructions: Cut the top and sides off of an empty egg carton, then cut it into four sections of three egg holders. In order for them to sit flat upside down, you will need to trim the backs down. Next, cut out the side of each end, creating the bat’s wings. Spray paint each of these bats with black paint and let dry. Have your child help place glue on the backs of the googly eyes and place them onto the middle part of each bat, creating the face. At the top of the bat’s head, create a small hole, then have your child push the ribbon through the hole. To keep the ribbon from pulling through, tie a couple of knots from underneath, which will allow the bat to hang as a Halloween decoration.

Witches Hat Materials: Black construction paper, one strip of black felt, one sheet of colored felt, white craft glue, tape, and scissors. Instructions: Take one sheet of black construction paper and roll it into a cone shape. Secure the cone shape with tape, then trim the bottom in order to let it stand up by itself on a table. Taking another sheet of black construction paper, use a cup or a jar as a guide to cut out a circle large enough for the hat’s brim. Glue the cone to the circle and let dry completely. Next, cut out several small strips from the colored felt and glue them around the cone from the bottom up, leaving some black paper in between each piece of felt. Cut a strip of black felt to go around the base of the cone, and let all of the felt pieces dry. You may decorate your witches hat however you’d like.

treats and being tricked by the ingredient list. Never in my wildest or spookiest dreams for that matter, did I think we would be a candy free Halloween house. Yet, it kind of just happened and I like it much better this way. Back to the pumpkin of handouts to wide-eyed monsters and free spirited fairies. We stumbled upon “Teal Pumpkin Project” a few years back and fell in love with the premise. It is to offer non food items to all treat-goers, so all can enjoy surprises — allergy free. It’s an idea we can stand behind and it’s also a lot more fun to shop for. Instead of the traditional 5 lb. mixed bag of candy, we had to get creative. The first of many favorite handouts are the glow necklaces and bracelets. Not a pout is given when these give that epic crack and light up the sidewalk. There are also the glow-in-the-dark vampire teeth, because everyone needs these. It really doesn’t matter if you were a princess or SpiderMan, because now you are the vampire version of both. Plus, they glow. Stickers, pencils, erasers and tiny note pads are also a hit. Spider rings, whistle lips and silly straws make the minions smile. You can even draw on ghost faces or skeleton faces on tiny white bubble bottles with a sharpie. Play dough can be fun too, you just

t’s not as frightening as it seems, I promise. Not too long ago, kids in my generation would be given apples adorned with gooey caramel by the stranger down the road. She meant well and most likely spent hours upon hours making homemade treats for all the treaters. Even then, my mom raised an eyebrow at the sticky mess running down my plastic Barbie mask. Times have surely changed. This is obviously frowned upon now as the age of technology is at everyone’s fingertips and handmade sweets are a justified “no-no”. Halloween has evolved into one of the most celebrated holidays by young and awesomely aged, nationwide. Tossing aside a time when dressing up was just for 12 and under. Today, everyone is invited to celebrate their inner goddess, super hero and spooky alter-ego. Now, today the scariest houses might not be the one with the fog machine or the motion detected cackling. It might, however, be one, like many, who are giving away wrapped candies. Crazy, I know. What is Halloween without all the candy? Well for some it’s not much fun at all — due to the ever-growing allergies and food aversions. Sadly, more and more kids and adults are finding themselves in the not so sweet, yet sticky, situation of very little

need to know that some brands contain wheat. By chance, your kids could go trick or treating and find themselves with a whole lot they cannot or shouldn’t eat; what do you do then? Lucky for us all, many dentists will buy back the candy and put a little cash in their hand. Some groups even ship it overseas to our amazingly selfless and brave service men & women. Now my family and I still have our favorite Halloween fare, but most of it I make at home. It’s not nearly as bad as it seems. We have a lot of fun making goodies we can share with friends and enjoy together. From the fun shaped pastas that can come gluten free, to the easily put together pizza pumpkin to share. Yet, our favorite snacks are the ones that sit and haunt you with a stare. These apple monster mouths have a strawberry tongue, a nut butter gum, two chocolate eyes and scary pumpkin seed teeth. feeling. Fruit can have a face of its own too. From minion inspired bananas to grumpy clementines, you can even draw a jack-olantern face on the top of your favorite fruit cup! I must admit though the ghost string cheese is a personal favorite. I might just draw faces on them all year long! The grape worms are a hit, being put together with a toothpick and chocolate eyes. Hands down, Halloween is one of my most favorite times of the year. It’s evolved in spectacular ways, encompassing whimsy, imagination and even washing over the whole month of October with its spooky charm. Halloween doesn’t have to be scary any more for those looking for healthy or candy free alternatives. Find out more about the Teal Pumpkin Project at: www.foodallergy.org Whatever you choose to be this Halloween, my hope is that you will be happy, healthy, a pinch scary and surrounded by the best ghouls and goblins around. Books

These are just some of the wonderful books for children we have come across this month. We hope to share with you some you have not seen before and also introduce others being released in the near future. Enjoy.

I (Don’t) Like Snakes

One Gorilla: A Counting Book by Anthony Browne What better attention-getter for small children than primates in all their variety? And who better to render them than Anthony Browne? In this elegant counting book, the author-illustrator outdoes himself with a vivid presentation of primates from gorillas to gibbons, macaques to mandrills, ring-tailed lemurs to spider monkeys. With his striking palette, exquisite attention to detail, and quirky flair for facial expressions, Anthony Browne slyly extends the basic number concept into a look at similarities and differences—portraying an extended family we can count ourselves part of. Ages 0 mos - 3 yrs Candlewick Press

by Nicola Davies This little girl has a problem. Her family doesn’t have dogs, or cats, or birds—they have snakes! And she really, really, really, really doesn’t like snakes. Her family can’t understand her dislike, but they canhelp her understand why snakes do the things they do and look the way they look. And maybe once she knows more, she will start to like snakes a little . . . or even a lot. Packed with snake trivia, this clever story includes realistic illustrations and simple explanations of snake behavior sure to make even slither-phobic readers shed their misconceptions about these fascinating reptiles. Back matter includes a note about snakes, a bibliography, and an index. Ages 5 yrs - 9 yrs Candlewick Press

children’s books

Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise by Sean Taylor Hoot Owl is no ordinary owl. He is a master of disguise! In the blackness of night, he’s preparing to swoop on his prey before it can realize his dastardly tricks. Look there—a tasty rabbit for him to eat! Hoot Owl readies his costume, disguising himself as . . . a carrot! Then he waits. The rabbit runs off. Never mind! Surely his next juicy target will cower against such a clever and dangerous creature as he! Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press

Black Cat, White Cat by Silvia Borando Black Cat—black from the tips of his ears to the tip of his tail—only ever goes out in the day. But White Cat—white from her whiskers to her four furry paws—only ever goes out at night. He picks daisies, while she gazes at the stars. When they both feel the urge to explore a world beyond their own, Black Cat and White Cat go on a journey of discovery and meet for the very first time. Vividly illustrated with bold black-and-white art, each page paves the way toward a surprise (and surprisingly colorful) ending. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs Candlewick Press

Oh No, George! by Chris Haughton George is a dog with all the best intentions, and his owner, Harry, has all the best hopes that George will be a well-behaved dog when he leaves him alone for the day. But it’s so hard to be a good dog when there are cats to chase and flowers to dig up! Chris Haughton’s fetchingly funny story and vibrant, retro illustrations are sure to lure dog lovers of all ages—and anyone who has ever met a temptation too good to resist. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs Candlewick Press

Use Your Imagination

Getting Old T

by Dick Rogen, DVM Horizon Pet Care, 1100 East Holly Boulevard Brandon, SD 57005 • (605) 582-8445

he days are getting shorter and the temperatures are slowly cooling. It is the world telling us that winter is coming. It also reminds people over 50 and their pets that they are getting older. The joints ache, the fingers are less nimble and the time it takes to get out of the bed is definitely longer. Arthritis affects our pets just like people. As the body ages, inflammation within the joints creates changes in the bone, joint lining and the fluids that lubricate them. The bone will grow small irregular points, bumps or spurs. These hard nodules cause tenderness or pain as the tendons and ligaments move over the top of them. The cartilage also starts to change from a smooth glistening appearance to a cobblestone roughened matrix that is more like a gravel road than the smooth super highway that we are born with. To top it off, the fluid which lubricates our joints becomes thinner and does not nourish the cartilage as efficiently. Put all of these things together and you get arthritis and joint pain! In our pets, it appears that the more active and wild they are as youngsters, the more likely it is for them to have arthritic changes to their joints. If they break bones or have joint injuries it also increases the chances for arthritis as they age. Lymes disease, autoimmune disorders and poor living conditions can also be responsible for the degeneration of their joints. It is always better to prevent disease and discomfort, but you cannot put pets in bubble wrap or not allow them to play. There are a few simple things you can start with younger pets that will help prevent some of the changes as they get older.

Balanced nutrition is very important. As they grow, the minerals and protein need to be in the correct proportions to allow a slow steady increase in size and weight. We do not want puppies and kittens to grow too fast. We also need to prevent obesity. Keep the treats and scraps from the table to a minimum. Extra weight puts large strains on the joints. Fish oils are not all equal. Omega 3 fatty acids from fish will help prevent arthritis but it needs to be mostly Omega 3 . If you buy a supplement high in Omega 6 or 9 it will cancel the effects of Omega 3 fatty acids. The level of DHA and EPA in the omega 3 supplements is also important. The price on the bottle does not always equal the quality of ingredients inside. Glucosamine supplementation will help arthritic patients, but the chondroitin is suspect to actually help. In addition, MSM will aid in reduction of inflammation in the joints, while many other “supplements” do not have proof that they are effective. Discuss the dosages and products with your veterinarian. Once the arthritis is painful to your friend, we have many medications to help alleviate inflammation and pain. The NSAIDS medications will help many patients. They can be given daily or as needed depending upon their individual needs. In addition, we use Gabapentin, Tramadol and mild narcotics to help with days that are extremely painful for your friend. The days my hands hurt, I know my old friends are also having a bad day. They do not need to limp and suffer, we can help them out. Getting old isn’t easy for any of us!

Earth-Hut Villages By Bruce Blake

P

ioneer archeologist Dr. William H. Over mapped two 1600s Omaha earth-hut villages located along the nearby banks of the Big Sioux River. He noted that the South village was “a very old site” and that the larger village “lying 500 yds. to the north is more recent.” Over’s sketch of the villages included a total of 88 earth-huts. He observed that the Omaha “habitations are smaller than the Earth Lodges of the Rees,” the Arikara Indians who lived along the Missouri River. Omaha earth-huts were built of sod and timber with a round hole in the center, which served as a chimney and as an opening to admit light. A sixto ten-foot long passageway entrance faced east. Skins were hung at the outer and inner entrances for protection against the wind and cold. By 1500 the Omaha had migrated west out of Ohio and later turned north up the Mississippi River where they eventually encountered the Sioux. A lengthy war began between the two tribes. Dr. Over wrote that about 1750 “the Sioux routed the Omaha from the Sioux Falls region.”

Map of the North Village Dr. W. H. Over made this notebook drawing of the more recent of the two Omaha Earth-Hut Village sites in lower Sherman Park. Because they were one of the last tribes to acquire firearms, the Omaha often were at the mercy of neighboring tribes. Image owner: South Dakota State Archeological Center - Archives.
