uluth Trading Company first headquartered on a refurbished dredge barge in Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior, and now they have come to downtown Sioux Falls, just blocks from the Big Sioux River. This is the ninth store and the first South Dakota location for the work and outdoor apparel retailer, which also has locations in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. Two brothers in Duluth, Minnesota, started the company in 1989. After watching workers haul tools to worksites in all sorts of odd containers, they invented the Bucket Boss®, a durable canvas tool organizer that fit on a drywall bucket. They later developed a catalog for their construction-related products before moving into retail and adding work wear. Their vision has remained the same over the past quarter century: make life easier for working men and women. Manager Dan Gies joined the Duluth Trading Company in August, but he is no stranger to retail in the Sioux Falls area. He’s

worked in other locations around town, but he says he was excited when he heard about the new store opening downtown. “We couldn’t have asked for a better location than The Foundry building,” says Gies. “The character of the building and just being part of the exciting downtown atmosphere was just what we were looking for.” The overall look and feel of the store is outdoorsy and rugged, yet warm and comfortable. In fact, the store is as spacious as the great outdoors, with about 7,000 square feet of space to showcase their wide array of workwear, gadgets and specialty gear. The Foundry had previously been home to a furniture store, and
Duluth Trading Company 320 S. The team was able to accomplish that while still preserving the historic charm of the building with its interior brick walls and exposed ductwork. From the illustrations in their catalog, their advertising and even product names, the Duluth Trading Company leans toward the “edgy” to set themselves apart (just look for the Big A** Brick of Soap in the men’s department). The company has made a name for itself with such brands as their Fire Hose® Work Pants, made of the same rugged canvas that once wrapped fire hoses, and their Longtail T® Shirts, which
they proudly proclaim to be the cure for “Plumbers Butt.” The shirt has three extra inches of shirt body length, so no matter how you are moving around during your work day, the shirt has you covered. When talking about their popular brands, another mustmention is the Buck Naked® underwear for men and women. Shoes, boots and outwear cover both fashion and function, and the store’s offerings change with the seasons to be sure that men and women our outfitted from head to toe for any type of weather and any type of work or play. It’s a toss-up as to whether shopping for apparel or shopping for all of the other gadgets is more fun. Need automotive emergency

tools? They have them. How about sail patch tape or fabric and leather adhesive? Check. Swiss army knives and first aid kits? Yep, they have those too. There’s even a special pet version of a med kit in case your favorite canine runs into any issues when you’re out on the trail. Kids aren’t left out of the fun. The Duluth Trading Company has a large display of toys and games to spur creativity and active play. Get them a kit to build a rocket car or learn how to whittle wood. Or, get the whole family outside with a game of classic lawn darts. If you’re not really a shopper, but you’re along for the ride, you can wander over to the sitting area and relax in a large leather chairs in front of the flat screen TV. Cold bottles of water or K-cups of coffee or tea are waiting.

Gies says one of the many things that makes Duluth Trading Company unique is that every product is field tested on actual job sites. “Basically, when the company was starting and the founders were looking to expand their offerings, if a product couldn’t be broken, it was added to the line,” Gies explains. “Today, we have a group of product testers called the Duluth Trades Panel. They test everything in real-world conditions.” “While we offer great products, we’re even more committed to great service,” says Gies. “Shoppers can get free two-hour parking in the First Avenue ramp when they bring in their ticket for validation, we have free shipping to the store, and we also have the company’s ‘No Bull Guarantee’ returns.”

SOIL HEALTH AND WATER QUALITY GO HAND IN HAND
How are farmers in South Dakota using sustainable practices for water management?
NO-TILL PROMOTES HEALTHY SOIL
HEALTHY SOIL RETAINS WATER
For many years, farmers plowed to prepare the soil for planting — using oxen, horses and today, machinery. But plowed or tilled soil can dry out, erode and blow away easily, so some farmers have moved away from tillage.
“In my no-till ground I can absorb two inches of water in about two minutes. In my tilled ground, it may take as much as 30 or 40 minutes to absorb two inches of water,” said Al Miron, a farmer from Crooks, S.D.
Farmers who practice no-till don’t plow before planting. They plant a new crop right in the field with the remains, or residue, of the previous year’s crop.
“Healthy soil affects water quality by absorbing the water rather than allowing it to run off,” he said.
Eventually the residue decays and adds organic matter to the soil. Increased levels of organic matter, along with microbes, make for healthy soil that absorbs water readily.
The number of South Dakota farmers using no-till increased by 29 percent from 2004 to 2013, with nearly 65 percent of farmers using reduced tillage or no-till (USDA). However, reduced tillage and no-till aren’t right for all farmers. Every farm is different, and farmers use the practices and strategies that work best on their land. “If we’re going to sustain agriculture production 10, 20 or 50 years from now, the preservation of the soil is very important,” said Miron.
“ It’s about caring for the land, Al Miron | Crooks, SD
improving soil quality, keeping water clean and passing it on to the next generation.
”
thisisfarming.org
Fourth-generation farmer Al Miron has spent 26 years improving his soil through no-till. He shows how his soil, which contains high levels of organic matter, absorbs water 15 times faster than tilled soil. Which means improved water quality, greater availability of nutrients, healthier plants — and long-term sustainability.
“To me, sustainability means being able to feed the world in the future. Al Miron | Crooks, SD

he southern end of Sioux Falls has seen tremendous growth in recent years, including the addition of several new residential developments. Jason and Jill Reents were part of that southern expansion when they built their house in 2012. This wasn’t their first venture into creating a home from the ground up, however, as Jason is a builder by trade. In fact, the couple is already planning a new build, which means their current house is now on the market (Interested? Read on.). Jill says they love the part of town they are in and will look to build in the same general area. And, even when they do start construction on a new home, it will likely have many of the same features. She says they often start with a house plan and then tweak it a little to make it their own. For example, they expanded the space originally allotted to the master bedroom and second upstairs bedroom, creating unique rooms for themselves and for

during the building process, offers room for bunk beds, her own walk-in closet and a desk area with built in storage provided by cutting squares out of the wall to hold books, baskets of school or art supplies and other special treasures. The open living room, kitchen and dining room offer a great space for the family to just hang out together or to entertain
friends. The color scheme is neutral greys and browns, which provides warmth and a bit of a blank canvas for introducing accent colors and a mix of contemporary and traditional furniture. Jill says she and Jason each have defined roles when they take on a building project. “He takes care of the building part, and then I do the decorating.

The hardwood floors are oak, but the wood was finished with more of a greyish tint to tie in to the rest of the décor. “We liked the fact that the oak wasn’t finished in the traditional way you see light oak,” Jill says. “And we really liked the darkcolored knots in the wood that tie into the dark wood of the kitchen cabinets.”

The kitchen island and counters feature a Cambria stone top in a mix of black, grey and a metallic silver, which brings out the metallic squares in the mosaic tile backsplash and the metallic look of the stainless appliances, which includes a dual wall oven. There is a secret behind closed doors in this kitchen…a hidden, walk-in pantry with great storage. This is one of the features that
is likely to carry over into a future house design. The living room area, while part of the open area design, is set apart a little bit with the addition of a soft, cream-colored carpet. You have to watch your step, however, because the Reents’ adorable dog, Daisy, blends into the color of the carpet. You’ll know she is there, though, when you feel a friendly lick or a rub against your leg
as she’s brought a toy for play time. When the family wants to have a sit-down meal instead of pulling up stools to the island for a quick bite, the dining room provides a comfortable setting, and they can still see out to the grassy fields behind the house. French doors connect the dining room to a three-season porch, which is a great space for relaxing

or entertaining. The Reents use a room just off the dining room as an office, and it’s a great example of how to start with a neutral color palette and bring in bright accents, such as the turquoise-print side chair and distressed turquoise buffet used for storage. A large, square sheet of metal sits on that buffet with magnets to hold family pictures
and Kennedy’s artwork. A vertical greeting card rack in the corner is a unique way to display more photographs. Jill admits one of her favorite rooms in the house is actually a walk in “shoe closet” off the laundry room, with cubbies for all shoes of all seasons. “Where we lived before, it seemed like we always had shoes and

It’s awesome!” The main floor laundry room is another area where the homeowners modified the original house plan, cutting down the actual size of the laundry area in order to create a half bath, which Jill says is so convenient when they have guests over. The laundry
portion of the room still has its own storage space, sink and a bar for hanging clothes, but then it is separated from the bathroom by a pocket door. Wanting to add some contemporary metal finishes in the house, the Reents turned to local fabricators at Quality Welding, which designed the brushed metal border around the living room fireplace

A RAY OF
Wine BY RICCARDO TARABELSI
A
ray of wine could describe a wine that stands out so brightly that it acts as a ray of sunshine on your palate. A ray of wine could also be read as an “array” of wine, meaning an assortment or a nice variety of wine. Alas, this article is neither about a ray of sunshine or an array of wine. Yes, there are some very good quality wines listed here, worthy of a comparison to a ray of sunshine, and yes, the wines listed here are a nice array of wines, but what I’d really like to tell you about is a man named Ray. Ray Revier was my father-in-law. He’s been gone for almost ten years, but it’s amazing how his name still comes up in casual conversations. He was a man that exuded confidence and defined

the word “conviction” because of his unwavering integrity. He was quick-witted and smart, and he loved his family deeply. Much like the stories of the winemakers behind my favorite “Ray” wines, Ray Revier was a man who never settled for second-best. He was just the best. Raymond Vineyards and Martin Ray are two of my favorite “Ray” wines. These wines portray the legacy of winemaking as well as the legacy of family, which is what Ray taught me about every day, all the way until the end. But that’s the beautiful thing about legacies…they never end. Ron Raymond, Sr. and his two sons, Ron Jr. and Walter, founded
“Legacies are enduring, standing the test of time.”
Raymond Vineyards in 1971. This father-and-sons team worked together to plant and build Raymond Vineyards. The Raymond family and Napa’s history are closely linked. Roy Raymond Sr. arrived in the Napa Valley in 1933 and was hired as a cellar worker at Beringer Brothers Winery in St. Helena. He met Martha Jane Beringer, and they were married in 1936. Roy and Martha Jane had two sons, Roy Jr. and Walter. Growing up in the Napa Valley, the boys spent many hours with their father in the winery and the vineyards at Beringer. After attending college, they took their places as 4th generation winemakers in the family business. A metal farm building functioned as their winery for the first few
years, the grapes were unloaded with pitchforks and shovels, and the tasting room and offices were in Roy Sr.’s backyard pool house. The quality of the wines attracted immediate attention from wine journalists, competitions, and the public. Raymond wines now earn accolades from across the country for their elegance, balance, and finesse. The Raymond family is proud to carry on old traditions, creating fine Napa Valley wine as a family. In 2009, Raymond Vineyards became a part of the Boisset Family Estates collection of wineries. The cornerstone of the Raymond portfolio, the Reserve Selection Napa Valley Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, and

Sauvignon Blanc have held true to the family’s mantra of “deep roots, powerful wines” since the first vintage in 1974. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon received high ratings with its delicious ripe blackberry flavor and a structured smoky oak backbone. Raymond will always have a place in my wine cellar. There’s the typical gentleman farmer stereotype so common today in wine country. And then there’s Courtney Benham, who is of a different mold entirely. In 1990, Courtney was walking through an old warehouse in San Jose when he happened upon a forgotten treasure- some 1500 cases of library wines, dating back more than forty years, made by California wine pioneer Martin Ray. Courtney explored further and found several old wooden crates filled with old letters, press clippings, winery brochures, and price lists from Ray’s four decades as a winemaker. It was clear that Martin Ray had quite a history, so Courtney contacted the Ray family and acquired the wine library and rights to the Martin Ray label. He decided to take up the Martin Ray brand with the goal of creating wines whose quality would make Martin Ray himself proud. This was no small task; Ray was an iconoclast who rejected mediocrity and an innovator who was one of the first to use grapes from the Santa Cruz Mountains to create premium wines. According to Vineyards in the Sky, a history of Ray’s life written by Ray’s wife and daughter, Ray was first drawn to winemaking by observing the legendary winemaker Paul Masson. He eventually bought Masson’s mountain winery, located in the hills above the town of Saratoga, and made wine there from 1936 to 1943. In 1943, he established his own winery and began to develop

vineyards in the nearby Mt. Eden, where he produced wines under the Martin Ray name from 1946 to 1972. He died in 1976, and the brand disappeared from the marketplace — until Courtney Benham rediscovered it fourteen years later. Now, Martin Ray wines are known for their quality due to the grape selection process. Mountain fruit is the source of Martin Ray wines, including vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Napa Valley’s Diamond Mountain, Sonoma Mountain, and the hillsides of the Russian River Valley. Like Courtney likes to say, “I love the challenge of creating incredible wines that over deliver. That’s where I like to play.” Each of these amazing wineries has something in common with my father-in-law Ray, besides the name. They all created a legacy. Legacies are enduring, standing the test of time. Even after Martin Ray’s death, his legacy lives on, as Ray Revier’s legacy of integrity lives on. I can see it in my wife’s eyes. And in the hearts of countless people he touched. He is the one who taught me to make people feel important, whether it was greeting a cashier by name or buying the mail carrier a summer sausage for no reason, his legacy lives on in me too. Start the new year with a “Ray” of wine and give thought to your own legacy and thanks to those with whom you get to share it. Carpe Vino and Happy New Year!

Old Spice...Fresh Start BY JIM MATHIS
T
his holiday season I reached into the cupboard to grab a couple of bay leaves. No problem, everybody has bay leaves, right? Well, what I found was an old jar with two, very sad, very old, very brittle leaves. Time to buy new bay leaves. Then I started digging deeper into the spice shelf and what I found was frightening. So let this be a warning to you dear reader...there may be evil in your kitchen, dozens of tiny jars of evil.

MAN IN THE KITCHEN
As I went through the spice rack I found some of the herbs and spices I use regularly; Tellicherry peppercorns, smoked sweet paprika, saffron and ground cumin were fresh and I could remember when and where I bought them. But behind the favorites were several scary suspects. I found a jar of onion powder that had turned to a solid block. A small jar of turmeric was hiding behind the barbeque rub where it had been for years. I found two

jars of fennel seeds; one had been used just a few weeks ago. The other was dusty and hiding in the back with an old jar of pickling spice and white pepper. White pepper? When did I buy that? Why did I buy that? In my kitchen, the dried herbs rarely get used, I generally use fresh. I’m sure most of the jars of herbs had been there for years. Scary. So I wondered, how long should I keep this stuff? Depending on whom you ask, dried herbs have a shelf life of
6 to 18 months, but the trouble is, you’re not sure how long they spent on the store shelf or in the warehouse before they got to your kitchen. Whole spices last longer than ground spices, but still, 2 to 4 years is max. But many of the jars I found didn’t have discernible dates. Some I found were dated, but they were way beyond their shelf life… a few were years beyond the date. Evil lurks in those tiny jars. How can you tell if it’s time to throw it out and start over? DDDDD DDDDD DDDDD it! Open the jar and take a good whiff, does it still have the vibrant aroma? If not, it’s time for change. How does it look? Herbs should still be green (I admit some of mine were gray.) The chili powders should be bright red and orange colors, most of mine were good, but they get used more often. Finally, if you’re still questioning whether it’s good, you can taste it. The taste of herbs and spices fades over time, so if the garlic powder that once had a kick is
wimpy and flat, it’s time to say goodbye. And for those of you who are wondering what the difference is between herbs and spices... it’s pretty simple, really. Herbs are from the leafy parts of the plant; so basil, oregano and thyme are all herbs. The spices come from other parts of the plant, like seeds or roots or bark. The same plant might produce both; fennel for example, the leaves are used as an herb while the seeds and pollen are spices and

the bulb is a vegetable. Fennel is kind of an overachiever. I’m starting 2016 with a fresh bunch of herbs and spices in the cupboard. Old jars are being recycled and shiny new bottles have taken their place. Those that were rarely used are not being replaced, why buy more until I need it, right? While I’m at it, I am checking the flour and sugar and rice, making sure the oils are good and even checking the dates on random canned goods hiding
in the dark recesses of the kitchen. A fresh start all around. I should clean out the junk drawer while I’m at it, but that’s another challenge for another day. Gary graduated from Luverne high school in 1969 and then studied business at Bemidji and Mankato State Universities, working at dealerships in his college towns before returning to Luverne to run the Oldsmobile business when the owner fell ill. He later negotiated the sale of that business, adding product lines and becoming a part of Schoon Motors. He purchased Schoon Motors in 1990. Five years after purchasing Schoon Motors, Gary made the bold decision to build a new building on I-90, becoming a cornerstone for the development of that area. He believed the visibility and ease of access were keys for long term grown. Skip ahead to now. Papik Motors has 8 product lines and a new Chevrolet building has been added to the property. Papik Motors is truly a family-focused enterprise. Gary’s wife, son, daughters and son-in-law join the dealership’s 50 full and part-time employees. Gary speaks highly of these employees and their dedication to making Papik Motors what it is today. 2013 was a special year for Gary as he was honored with being named the Time Dealer of the Year for Minnesota. He was chosen not only for his professional success but for his commitment and leadership in his hometown. In addition to this honor, Gary was selected as the Luverne Area Chamber’s 2014 Outstanding Chamber Member in November 2015. Gary currently serves as the Vice-President of Luverne Initiatives for Tomorrow and is involved in many community-driven commercial projects such as: GrandStay Hotel & Suites, Take 16 Brewing Co., Luverne Trolley LLC, and Sterling’s Café & Grille. He and his wife, Janine, are passionate about being involved in the community. They attend hundreds of community functions and fund-raising events in addition to chasing around their ten grandchildren and all of their events. Whether in business or community projects, Luverne is near and dear to Gary’s heart… In the car business and beyond!

Sweet Caramel Chex Mix
1 stick butter 1 cup peanut butter, creamy, not reduced-fat 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 1 Large box Crispex 1 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup brown sugar 1 stick butter 1/4 cup light karo syrup pinch salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp vanilla 2 boxes (smaller boxes) Crispex cereal Bag of pretzels (I use 1/2 bag) M&Ms A brown grocery bag
In microwave safe bowl, melt butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips. (80% power). Mix well once melted and add vanilla. Pour Crispex into LARGE Bowl. Pour melted mixture over cereal and gently fold together. I take 1 large (unscented) garbage bag, put powdered sugar in bag, then put chocolate coated cereal into bag. Gently mix together all in the bag. Place into tupperware container and hide from the kids so they don’t eat it all at once!

RECIPES
In microwave safe bowl, melt butter, brown sugar and karo syrup for 2 minutes. Stir. Microwave another 2 minutes. Remove and add the baking soda and vanilla, stir well. At this point, I have put the Crispex and pretzels in my brown grocery bag, so next is to pour the mixture over the cereal in the bag. Cinch bag closed. Place WHOLE bag in microwave, microwave 1 minute. Remove and slowly shake the bag to well coat its contents. Microwave 1 more minute. Slowly shake bag again. Pour out coated cereal onto some wax paper. Spread out and let it cool. Once cooled, sprinkle with M&Ms and store in sealed container. This stuff will disappear quickly — my kids absolutely love it!

ou know the guidelines: Eat a well-balanced diet, get enough exercise, don’t smoke. That is the advice you’ll get from your doctor to try and prevent cancer. And while some cancers are hard to prevent merely with lifestyle choices, one fairly common type of cancer is also one of the most preventable. Cervical cancer affects about 10,000 women a year in the United States. January is Cervical Health Awareness Month and the perfect time to highlight issues related to cervical cancer, the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the importance of early detection.

Cervical cancer is completely preventable. Talk with your doctor about whether the HPV vaccine would be advisable for yourself, your children or grandchildren.
What Causes Cervical Cancer?
How Can I Prevent It?
Almost every cervical cancer is related to infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus, which is acquired through direct sexual contact, is thought to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. By age 50, approximately 80 percent of women will have been infected with some type of HPV. Although most women will have HPV, not all will get cervical cancer. About 80 to 90 percent of women’s immune systems will clear the virus on their own within two years, requiring no treatment.
A vaccine, called Gardasil, that can prevent the HPV strains that cause the majority of cervical cancers, was approved for use in 2006. The Centers for Disease Control recommend that girls 11 and 12-years-old be vaccinated before they reach the age of sexual activity. The CDC also advises a series of three shots to young women ages 13 to 26. Boys should be vaccinated as well as girls. Boys not only carry the virus, but are themselves at greater risk for anal, penile or head and neck cancers if they contract certain types of HPV. In addition to vaccinations, regular Pap tests can also help

detect any precancerous or abnormal cells early enough so cervical cancer can be prevented. • Cervical cancer screening should begin at age 21. • From age 21 to 29, perform cytology every three years. • From age 30 to 65 years, co-testing (the pap and high risk HPV test) every five years is recommended.
How Do I Know if I Have It? When cervical cells first begin to change, there are usually no symptoms. At more advanced stages of the disease, women may experience abnormal bleeding, unexplained pelvic pain or unusual vaginal discharge. The best way to screen for cervical cancer is a Pap test. With this test, cells are collected from a woman’s cervix and looked at under a microscope for abnormal changes. An abnormal Pap test could indicate early pre-cancerous changes on a woman’s cervix. Not all changes in the cells are caused by cancer. Further testing needs to be done to determine the reason for the abnormality. If

cells show the early signs of pre-cancerous changes, treatment to remove those cells can be done before they change into cancer.
What Treatments are Available for Cervical Cancer? Early detection is still the best option. This type of cancer takes many years to develop. When caught early, the five-year survival rate for cervical cancer patients is almost 100 percent. Some cancer can be removed with localized surgery. Radiation, chemotherapy and hysterectomy can stop more advanced cancer’s spread. When the cancer has moved further throughout the body, treatment is far more difficult. The best option is to catch the cancer before more radical treatments are necessary. Cervical cancer is completely preventable. Talk with your doctor about whether the HPV vaccine would be advisable for yourself, your children or grandchildren. Take advantage of the easy, early screening tools you have available to catch the disease. The best treatment for cervical cancer is to never get it in the first place.

WE HAVE THE BESTEST TOYS EVER!
“Instead of worrying and doing anything to make the crying stop, it’s a good time to teach baby how to handle the coming independence of toddlerhood, and to move away from mom and dad and explore her world,” Wilcox said.
I
t might happen when grandma or auntie arrives to babysit. The first day of preschool. Or just one day out of the blue when you’re dropping off at day care for the hundredth time. That sweet little face puckers up, arms reach out wildly for you, and WAAAAA!! Why is this happening, and why now? “Separation anxiety is a normal developmental step that can happen anytime,” said Rochelle Boote, MD, Pediatrician at Avera Medical Group 69th and Cliff. However, there are three key times when it’s most likely to crop up: at 6 to 9 months; during toddlerhood at 15 to 18 months; and around age 4 to 5, when a child is going to school for the first time.
At the 6 to 9 month range, babies are becoming more self-aware. They are recognizing faces. They are developing relationships that go beyond just needing someone to feed them or put them to bed. “Separation anxiety is a sign that babies are forming strong and lasting attachments to the important people in their lives – like mom and dad,” said Doniese Wilcox, Certified Family Life Educator at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. “Instead of worrying and doing anything to make the crying stop, it’s a good time to teach baby how to handle the coming independence of toddlerhood, and to move away from mom and dad and explore her world,” Wilcox said.

For babies, Wilcox and Boote recommend the following steps. • Practice. Play peek-a-boo or a little game of hide and seek. Go away from baby for a few moments and come back. Hide a favorite toy under a blanket and help her find it. • Develop cues and routines. Say the same thing every time you leave, with a similar inflection: “Mom is leaving now, but I’ll be back.” Give him a hug and a kiss. Smile. Perhaps have the babysitter or grandma stand at the window and watch you leave, and wave goodbye. Leave baby with a security object, like a favorite toy, to hold. Then go. • Introduce new people gradually. Don’t just drop the baby off. Sit down and play with baby with the new person, so baby understands that the person is “OK,” and this new environment is a fun place. • Don’t do the disappearing act. Don’t just sneak away while baby isn’t looking. That teaches baby not to trust and be anxious about “when are you going to leave me again?” • Don’t come back to check. If the child sees you peeking in the door, it will start the cycle all over. When you’re gone, the child will start to form healthy attachments with whoever is caring for him, such as the babysitter or grandma. • Understand that crying is normal and healthy. When you’re upset, it makes baby feel less secure. When you give in to cries, and take the baby back in your arms, you’re teaching that the

more she cries, the more time she gets with you. “Crying is an act to make mom and dad stay, and it’s a good one,” Boote said. • Have a happy reunion. When you return, smile, hug and kiss baby and say, “see, I came back.” Then, spend some happy time playing in the new environment so baby learns, “this is a great place. Dad likes it here too.” With older kids, it can help to have them carry a special memento or picture. Talk through past separations and past successes. For example, on the first day of kindergarten remind the child, “Remember when you went to preschool last year and you loved it?” Bedtime is a separation that often impacts older children. “They can smell the popcorn, they can hear the TV. They want to be with the family, too,” Wilcox said. Perhaps leave the bedroom door open a crack, and remind the child, “I’ll be sitting right here, thinking about you until you go to sleep, and you can think about me here while you’re in bed.” Your child’s temperament plays a role. Nine traits define your child’s approach to life, and understanding these traits can help you match the parenting techniques that will work best with your child. For example, if your child is naturally slow to adapt and highly sensitive, he can be more prone to separation anxiety. You can get a free, confidential temperament questionnaire by emailing temperament@avera.org Learn more at AveraChildrens.org

WINTER CRAFTS BY JESSICA WEISCHEDEL
Catching Snowflakes Materials needed: Construction paper, scrapbook paper, paint, glue, scissors, yarn, and any other accessories you desire. Instructions: This craft involves getting pretty creative and using your imagination! Start by cutting out the shape of a head with a little nose on the top and gluing it onto the upper portion of a blue background. Next, create the body by choosing what color shirt and scarf to use, with construction paper, fabric, paint, or whatever medium you want to use. Next, cut out a black circle and glue it onto the middle of the head, creating the open mouth. Add teeth with small squares of white construction paper. Add a red or pink tongue, and your choice of hair color. With paint, stickers, or anything that works, create snowflakes in the background, and one on the tongue. Make several of these in a row, and it looks like a lot of children catching snowflakes! A fun thing to display for your child to proudly show off.

FOR KIDS
Footprint Snowmen Materials needed: Blue, brown, and black paper, white craft paint, black marker, googly eyes, and glue. Instructions: Carefully brush onto the bottom of your child’s foot with white paint, then have them step onto a piece of blue paper. Let dry completely. Once dry, draw some black buttons and a smile, and add an orange nose and googly eyes. Cut out some arms from brown paper, making them look like tree branches, and glue them to either side of the middle of the body. Cut out a black top hat and glue it on top of the head. You now have a footprint snowman to hang up for your winter dÊcor.
Paper Plate Arctic Fox Penguins in the Dark Materials needed: White and orange chalk markers or paint, black paper, googly eyes, and glue. Instructions: Using a white marker or paint, draw two ovals on a piece of black paper. Make one oval small and one oval big, leaving room on the top and bottom for the head and the feet of the penguins. Next, draw on some feet using an orange marker or paint, and add an upside down triangle right on top of the oval to create the beak. Glue on some googly eyes above the beaks. Leaving space around the ovals, draw snowflakes in the background until it looks like there are two penguins standing in the dark with snow falling!
Materials needed: Paper plate, white tissue paper, white cardstock, large googly eyes, black pom pom, stapler, scissors, and glue. Instructions: Cut your paper plate in half, then fold the corners of one half in towards the center to create a triangle. Staple it shut, then staple the triangle piece upside down to one side of the other paper plate half, creating a head and body. Make sure the other half of the paper plate has the cut end up, so that it is straight across, and the round part is at the bottom. Add glue to the paper plates, then cover them with white tissue paper, trimming any extra pieces that may hang off the ends. Let dry completely, then glue the large googly eyes and a black pom pom onto the triangle piece to create the fox’s face. From white cardstock paper, cut out two triangle ears, four legs, and a tail. Glue them onto your fox, and add white tissue paper to the tail to give it texture. You could also add orange tissue paper instead of white to make this a regular fox.

Fur Trapper Ambush TOM KILIAN
T
Fur Trapper Ambush McHardy Park, Brandon
he first Europeans to enter Minnehaha County in search of animal pelts to satisfy the demand abroad for furs may have been French trappers. Some historians believe that trader Charles Pierre Le Sueur, or his men, visited this area as early as 1683. Le Sueur provided information for a map, published in Paris in 1701, which included a voyageurs road leading from the Mississippi River to the falls of the Big Sioux River. In the 1850s three men in canoes heavily laden with fur pelts headed downstream on nearby Split Rock Creek. An Indian warrior shot an arrow from ambush killing trapper Morgan in the lead canoe. Trapper White quickly fired his rifle and killed the warrior. After burying Morgan, White scalped the dead warrior and tacked his scalp to a tree as a warning. The two remaining trappers then continued downstream to Sioux City. Years later, White returned to the ambush scene to place a marker near Morgan’s grave. The exact location of the burial site was lost when the marker was removed by road builders in the 1930s. DEDICATED IN 2007 BY THE MINNEHAHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN MEMORY OF JON KENTFIELD.
French Fur Traders
In his 2006 book Soft Fur and Iron Men, author and Kilian College Professor Aaron Woodard asserted that the earliest visitors to South Dakota from a European power were the French. Woodard pointed our that in addition to Le Sueur, Chevalier Verendrye spent considerable time in the state and marked his presence here in 1743 with an inscribed lead plate that he buried near Ft. Pierre.
