new ice cream shop on 41st Street has a rich history that started on a farm near Larchwood, Iowa, more than a century ago. The family tree on that farm began with Tobias Stensland, whose son Arthur later started a dairy operation. Arthur’s sons grew up milking cows and working the farm, and eventually son Doug joined Arthur in the operation. However, they decided to retire the dairy operation. But, in 2003, a pair of young and ambitious twins approached their grandfather Arthur about restarting the dairy as a way for them to earn money for college. Doug and his wife Mona helped their 17-year-old sons Jason and Justin acquire the funds to get started, and the boys learned quickly from their father and grandfather. They would milk cows before and after school with their younger brother, Kyle. With the help of robots and other high-tech machinery, the dairy experienced tremendous growth, and the twins received numerous accolades throughout the agricultural community. In 2015, the family broke ground for a creamery at their Larchwood farm – where four generations of the Stensland family now live. The whole family is part of the operation now, including Doug and Mona, Jason and Justin and their families, Kyle, and the boys’ sister Leah (Stensland) Moller. When the siblings began talking about a storefront in Sioux Falls, they approached their uncle, Mark Stensland, to return to South Dakota to manage it. Stensland Family Farms Ice Cream + Country Store on 41st Street features more than 20 different flavors of ice cream, plus non-dairy sorbet options, ice cream sandwiches, floats, sundaes, milk, cheese curds and ground beef. They plan to add hard cheeses and flavored cheese curds next year. Framed pictures on the wall show the farm in its early days, as well as after its expansion. Back by the windows, where you can peek into the kitchen and perhaps catch a glimpse of Mona or Leah making ice cream magic, hangs a collage of family pictures and news articles featuring the family’s success with their dairy operations. After a long career in retail, sales and the financial industry that took him out of state, Mark says he couldn’t be happier about being back “home” to work with his family. “At first I wasn’t sure, but then there was just this tugging at me, and I knew this was the right thing to do.” He credits “the kids” – Jason, Justin, Kyle and Leah – for their

hard work and determination to see the dream of the creamery on the farm and the Sioux Falls store become a reality. “I love this,” he says. “Meeting people, talking to people and introducing them to our fresh, local dairy products. I love coming to work every day.” Not only do they promote their own local foods, but they also help other Sioux Falls businesses as well. They offer ice cream sandwiches with cookies from The Cake Lady, and their coffee is from The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. Speaking of coffee, when you come to the store, you can order a cup of coffee with a dip of your favorite flavor of ice cream. Or, if you’re needing a little “lift” during the day, go for the “Wakeup Call,” which features finely ground espresso beans mixed with their coffee ice cream. In a nod to the farm, the flavors on the menu include Farmhouse Original (vanilla), Strawberry Fields, Udder Me Mint and How Now Brown Cow (chocolate). These creative folks don’t stick to just basic flavors, however. You can also get Pistachio, Peanut Butter Cup, Smore Please, Salted Caramel Pecan or Heavenly Holstein, which is light cocoa ice cream blended with black and white cookies. Kids will love Carnival Craze, which is cotton candy ice cream with pink crackling candies. Die-hard chocolate lovers may want to try Conquer the Craving featuring their own homemade brownie batter with homemade brownie chunks and cookie dough. Sampling spoons are ready at the counter so you can try a few flavors before deciding what you want in your dish or made-on-thespot waffle cones. Once you find your favorite – or favorites – they have quarts available for you to take home. While the store has a lineup of regular flavors, they will also change flavors seasonally, so plan on visiting often. Oh, and just in time for the holidays, they have made space in the large milk coolers for their very own eggnog. The arrival of December may not necessarily have Sioux Falls residents and visitors thinking about ice cream. However, a sign on a shelf inside the store proudly proclaims, “It’s Never Too Cold for Ice Cream.” And despite the temperatures outside, you will definitely get a warm welcome at Stensland Family Farms Ice Cream + Country Store.

“Home Is Where Your Story Begins.”
I
f you are looking for a special gift or something new for your home (or wardrobe), Forget Me Not is a store you’ll want to remember. Jody Kusek first opened Forget Me Not in Sioux Falls in 2008, and she recently added a second store in Harrisburg, located in the retail center on Cliff Avenue that also includes Schoeneman’s Building Materials Center and Lava’s Javas & Treats. The growth of the Harrisburg community and convenience for her Iowa customers led to the decision to expand. In addition to home décor, the spacious Harrisburg shop also carries women’s clothing and accessories. The store has a dressing room, which the Sioux Falls store doesn’t have, so they are able to carry more variety. The wide array of jackets, sweaters and shawls in the store now are perfect for the cooler weather, and so are the glam slippers. When buying clothing, the team typically orders just one run of an item to ensure that women in the area can find unique pieces that can’t be found anywhere else. Forget Me Not has lots of fur and sparkles to get you ready for all of your holiday events. Look for the friendly elf on a shelf while you’re perusing the racks! You can find everything from furniture to frames year-round at Forget Me Not. If you are looking for a side chair, an accent table or even bedroom furniture, you can find it at Forget Me Not. Laura Flyger of Design-N-Drapery also has a corner of the shop to provide consultations on window treatments, with a range of fabrics for draperies and Hunter Douglas window treatments. Store manager Deb Teunissen says the

new store has been well received. “We are really enjoying meeting people from Harrisburg and surrounding towns,” she says. “We love this big space, and it’s been fun bringing the expanded clothing line to the store.” Each section of the store has a different look and feel, from traditional décor to a more modern flair. And now, during this holiday season, each of these areas has Christmas accessories to enhance the look. If you are planning a holiday gathering, you can choose from an assortment of party napkins and flame-burning or LED candles to set the mood. Santa collectors will love all the different figurines made in all sorts of sizes and materials, including a Santa that looks like it was carved from a knotty log. There are sprigs of greens and berries for your vases or mantles, holiday-inspired wall art, ornaments and vintage Christmas tins and greeting card sets. For stocking stuffers, pick up small packages of Door County Coffee in flavors like Candy Cane or Hot Buttered Rum, or a sweet treat of jumbo red and green malted milk balls. And, the great thing is if you are shopping for a gift, they have greeting cards right by the counter, so you can get everything you need in one stop. It is also obvious the friendly staff loves what they do. “We have so much fun finding items for the stores and then connecting people to those things that fit their home and their lifestyle…or to help them find that perfect gift for friends and family,” says Teunissen. “We want to help our customers turn their house into a ‘home.’” That very mission of Forget Me Not Gift Boutique seems to be summed up in one of the throw pillows available at the store that says, “Home Is Where Your Story Begins.”

A Suite of Nutcrackers BY MARY MICHAELS
N
utcrackers are one of the timeless symbols of the holiday season, and as December arrives, stations begin playing various arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. Now, a trip to the Rock County Historical Society provides an amazing experience as you step into a suite of nutcrackers. Luverne resident Betty Mann started formally collecting nutcrackers in 2001, but in 15 short years, had grown her collection to over 2,500 pieces. And with the exception of a few that her children took as keepsakes, they are now part of the society’s permanent display. Mann primarily kept an eye out for soldiers and drummers over the years, and she found some special pieces while traveling in Germany and England – including some from Buckingham Palace. One of her first soldiers was on a pencil case that she had as a child in school, and that is part of the collection as well. Although many of the nutcrackers are traditional, the filled cases at the historical society also feature nutcracker figurines of various occupations like a hunter, fisherman, and chef, and a variety of animals including a penguin. Sports fans will enjoy the shelves filled with football nutcrackers – mainly the Minnesota Vikings, but a few others like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants as well. And, Mann’s collection isn’t just figurines, but also includes other items with nutcracker designs, like rugs, pillows, puzzles,

dishware, a cookie jar and even an egg timer. Mann, 86, also has been collecting decorative shoes since she was 10 and now has around 10,000 of those. She says her kids give her a bad time about her sizable collection, but she says they are partly to blame. “One year for Christmas, they gave me 55 nutcrackers and shoes!” She adds that her friends would also get in on the act as well. “I have friends who loved to spend my money,” Mann laughs. “They would call me because they would be somewhere and find nutcrackers, and they’d tell me I needed to go buy them.” She hopes that her donated collection will encourage people to come visit the Rock County Historical Society displays that span across six different buildings. She’s passionate about this organization, having served as its president now for 22 years. The group purchased the old Ford garage in Luverne, and at that history center, they provide assistance with genealogical research as well as house historical displays. They are currently working on an agricultural display that will be opened next spring. As a permanent display, you can see Mann’s collection of nutcrackers year-round. Visit the historical society’s center at 312 E. Main Street in Luverne. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And if you go on Tuesdays, you’ll probably have a chance to meet the collector herself!

roject Warm-Up was started in 2006 by Kaitlin and Tracy Vik. Kaitlin wanted to create a service project for her Key Club at Lincoln High School and knowing the growing population of homeless students in the Sioux Falls School District, they came up with the idea of making fleece tie blankets. That first year, Kaitlin, along with her parents, little sister and 20 of her friends, made 100 blankets to donate. The project has grown immensely over the years with many

local schools, church groups, social groups, scout troops, athletic teams, work groups, and families hosting blanket making parties of their own to donate. Over the past 10 years, more than 15,000 blankets have been distributed to children in need in the Sioux Empire and beyond! Project Warm-Up has answered the call when tornados struck the communities of Delmont and Wessington Springs, and when a flood devastated the town of Canton. Volunteers have delivered blankets to children who are facing serious health issues, lost a parent, are in foster care or are struggling due to other life stresses. Three years ago, Project Warm-Up partnered with Habitat for Humanity to provide a new blanket to each family member when
they receive the keys to their new home. This year they will partner with a project started by Rachel Schuldt, Chemo Comfort Bags, that are going to local people who are undergoing chemotherapy. They have also partnered with Hugs 4 Haddley and Amy Jo Lems to deliver blankets to children in local hospitals. Donations of fleece and funds are greatly appreciated. Please consider helping Project Warm-Up to show children in our area and beyond that they are loved and cared for, by giving them a warm blanket to call their own. got fleece? www.ProjectWarmUp.org

he stockings are hung by the chimney with care at the Radtke house in Rock Rapids, Iowa. And, Easton (4), Callen (2) and Everly (4 months) are certainly hoping that St. Nick will soon be there. Mark and Cassie Radtke bought the house five years ago, shortly after they were married. At the time, it was just the two of them, but they knew they wanted to start a family. “We’ve certainly filled it up in five years!” laughs Cassie. When it comes to Christmas, the family is all in – from trees in nearly every room, right down to the Christmas jammies the kids wear all month long. The house is special not only because the Radtkes are creating memories there with their children, but also because there is an extended family connection. Cassie and Mark bought the house from Cassie’s brother. “Back when the house was up for sale, my Mom said someone should buy it and fix it up,” says Cassie. “So my brother bought it and my parents helped with a lot of the work.” That work included stripping three layers of wallpaper, pulling up carpet and installing new hardwood floors, a kitchen and bathroom remodel. Even with some modern updates, the family still preserved the charm of this 1940s home. Cassie grew up just a block from where she lives now, and although Mark had lived in Denver, he was ready for life in a smaller town. Cassie says her siblings all came back to the area as well, so they love

having family close by. Being part of the Rock Rapids community is important to the Radtkes, so Cassie likes to visit the local shops for new Christmas finds, and many of the canvas-mounted photographs in the house were taken by a friend who also lives in Rock Rapids.

The living room provides a warm and cozy welcome to visitors, and the fireplace mantle that holds the family stockings is decked out with holiday greenery. Cutting down a fresh tree is a family tradition that Cassie grew up with, and she is excited that she and Mark can now pass that on
to their children. The tree stands in front of the living room window, and the rest of the room is filled with Christmas-patterned throw pillows, whimsical holiday characters and a tile that proclaims the ultimate holiday mantra from the movie Elf: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
The home features a formal dining room, and Cassie draws on memories of her childhood when decorating for Christmas. “I remember at my Grandma’s house, she always had fancy place settings and beautiful centerpieces,” she says. “It’s also a tradition my Mom has carried on when hosting holidays, so I love being able to use our china and create something beautiful as well.” The china rests on larger red charger plates, a silver bowl of white ornaments sits at the center of the table, and each chair is wrapped with wide plaid ribbon that holds a spray of greenery on the chair backs. A group of nutcrackers stands on the buffet, another family tradition started for Cassie by her mom. A tree in the corner holds Cassie’s ornament collection, each have a special meaning. Most were given each year by Cassie’s parents. Some of her favorites include a keepsake ornament from Cassie and Mark’s first Christmas together, ornaments of their

great storage. The main floor also includes a guest room with a cedar chest Cassie’s uncle had made for her high school graduation, and an office, which is a place for Mark to showcase his hunting treasures.

greenery, sits another little tree and nativity set. Everly’s room is all girl, with pink walls and white furniture. Glittery pink and white ornaments hang on her little tree. The boys also have a tree in their navy and forest green room, but

The box arrived on a Wednesday, just as promised. Inside was some pretty ingenious packaging; the corrugated cardboard box is lined with something that looks like moving blankets encased in plastic. In the top section of the box are the vegetables, bread, seasonings and sauces. The bottom section holds several ice packs and the proteins, chilled, but not frozen. If you’re one of those people who always takes food to relatives for the holidays, these boxes will be handy for transportation. If not, your recycling guy will not be a fan of your new meal plan. We’ve ordered the boxes off and on for a couple of months, and overall it’s been a good experience. On the positive side, it’s helped to break me out of a recipe rut that I’d fallen into. We’ve stirfried Asian, sizzled Italian and dug in to some good old American comfort food. My beloved and I have liked some of the dishes enough to recreate them on our own. Others have inspired me to try variations; like Chicken Marsala; I’ve remade it once but with pasta instead of potatoes. And then I found veal cutlets at the meat market and made a Veal Marsala version. All of the meals so far have taken 45 minutes or less to make. One challenge with the first few recipes was that I was trying way too hard to follow their directions. That’s just not the way I cook. My beloved pointed out that I was getting stressed in the kitchen instead of relaxing and unwinding from my workday. She was right, so I lightened up and approached it differently. Now I read the recipe card, set it aside and start to cook the way I

chefs is creating perfect weeknight meals, carefully documenting the recipe and directions and measuring out just the right ingredients in just the right quantities. Then they carefully package them in insulated boxes and with the help of the good people at FedEx or UPS, deliver the whole kit and caboodle to your doorstep. All you do is open the box and you’re ready to make dinner. I looked at several options and most of them are designed for a two or three person household; perfect for my beloved and me. Of course if you have more in your house, you could add plans and get four or five portions. Most let you choose from several meal options each week, set your preferences for the kinds of meals you’ll get; beef, chicken, or fish or vegetarian (some even vegan) and dietary restrictions like dairy or gluten. All offer the ability to skip weeks if you’re travelling or busy. As I began to narrow them down, Blue Apron and Plated seemed like the best fit for us, and after much consideration and hand-wringing, I committed to trying Plated. Plated offers two or three portions of two meals a week, delivered to our corner of the world on Wednesdays or Saturdays. We chose the Wednesday omnivore plan; we’re good with chicken, beef or fish, and we’re open to the occasional vegetarian option if it sounds appealing. So Week One I signed up to get all the stuff we’d need to make a couple of dinners. Our first box included Pork Belly Steam Buns and Chinese Beef with Broccoli — not a bad start.

know how. Smell, watch, listen; you’ll know when to do the next thing far better than watching a clock and following the directions to the letter. Once I did that, my attitude about the Plated box changed. Now I don’t see it as a chore, but a chance to play. One of these days I’m going to have Kara unpack everything, take away the menu cards and just see what I come up with; like playing Chopped via FedEx. As promised, these box services deliver meals with little food waste. The worst I’ve seen is they sent a large red onion when I needed about a quarter of it. But what they fix with no food waste, they over-compensate for with lots of packaging waste. There’s the box, the insulation, the cold packs to start with – then everything is in its own little plastic pouch, bag, bottle or cup. If you have a “reduce, reuse, recycle” tattoo, one of these kits may cause you to have a heart attack. And I wish there was more flexibility in the shipping dates, Tuesday would be way better for me, but that’s not an option. But we’ve started to look forward to the box. And a coworker is on the same plan and we’ve been sharing hits and misses, and

looking forward to trying the new options each week. Does it cost a little more than going to the mega-mart? Probably, but I’m not stuck trying to figure out what to do with leftover kale or scallions. I’m spending less time the local grocery store and at $12 a meal, we’re spending less than most takeout. And the meals are certainly better for us. We’re also eating takeout far less frequently. This may create a small hole in the Sioux Falls economy, and for that, we’re sorry. If you or the cook in your household is feeling like they’re stuck with the same rotation of dishes each weeknight, maybe the gift of Plated, Blue Apron or Hello Fresh would be nice Christmas present. The cook gets to explore some new ideas in the kitchen, and everyone gets a chance to get out of that rut. This sounds like a pretty good way for you to do yourself a favor and eat something good today! ‘Tis the Season! BY JO MCCLURE
Festive Dipped Cherry Cookies
Light as a Cloud Coconut Cookies
2 1/2 cups flour 3/4 cup sugar, divided 1 cup cold butter, cubed 1/2 cup finely chopped maraschino cherries, patted dry 1 11 ounce bag of Ghirardelli Premium white baking chips, finely chopped, divided 3/4 tsp almond extract 2 teaspoons shortening, coarse sugar and red edible glitter
1/4 cup butter, softened 1/4 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp coconut extract 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup ( 8 ounces ) sour cream 2 3/4 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 cup flaked coconut, toasted
Combine flour and 1/2 cup sugar, then cut in the butter until this mixture is crumbly. Knead in the cherries, 2/3 cup of chopped white chocolate and almond extract until dough forms a ball. Form the dough into 3/4 inch balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten slightly with a cookie press or a glass dipped in the remaining sugar. Bake at 325˚ for 10-12 minutes or until edges are slightly browned. Remove from baking sheet and cool for an hour. Melt shortening and remaining white chocolate in the microwave and stir until smooth. Dip half of each cookie into the melted chocolate and allow excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper and sprinkle with coarse sugar and edible sugar. Allow the chocolate to set and store in an airtight container. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
Frosting: 1/3 cup butter, cubed 3 cups powdered sugar 3 tablespoons evaporated milk 1 tsp coconut extract 1 tsp vanilla 2 cups flaked coconut, toasted
Cream butter, shortening and sugars until light and fluffy, beat in the eggs and extracts. Stir in the sour cream. In another bowl combine the flour, salt and baking soda and beat into the buttery mixture. Stir in the coconut and drop by tablespoons onto a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 375˚ for 8-10 minutes. Remove from baking sheet and allow to cool for an hour. Prepare the frosting in a heavy saucepan. Heat the butter over medium heat until golden brown (5-7 minutes) stirring constantly. Pour melted butter into a small bowl and gradually beat in the powdered sugar, milk, and extracts. Spread the frosting over the cookies and then dip them in the toasted coconut. Allow the frosting to set and store in an airtight container. Makes about 5 dozen cookies. To toast the coconut...bake in a shallow pan at 350˚ for 5-10 minutes.

BY RICCARDO TARABELSI
I
remember waking up on January 6th, 1978, running to the living room chimney to find my stocking full of candy and little toys. I remember not believing my eyes. I remember exclaiming to my parents, “La Befana found me in America too!!!” I was six-years-old, and it was my first Christmas in the United States. My parents did everything they could to make it feel like home, more like Italy: we had Panettone cake, we had Advent calendars, we had tortellini with freshly made bolognese, we had the smells and the tastes and the decorations, but I was still worried about one thing… Would La Befana find me? La Befana is one of Italy’s oldest and most celebrated legends. Each year on January 6, the children of Italy awaken in hopes that La Befana has made a visit to their house. This is a significant day to Italians because it marks the end of the Christmas season and the day that the three Wise Men arrived in Bethlehem. Over the years, the Epiphany has been a more celebrated holiday for the children of Italy than even Christmas. As legend has it, the three Wise Men were in search of the Christ child when they decided to stop at a small house to ask for directions. Upon knocking, an old woman holding a broom opened the door slightly to see who was there. Standing at her doorstep were three colorfully dressed men who were in need of directions to find the Christ child. The old woman was unaware of who these three men were looking for and could not point them in the right direction. Prior to the three men leaving, they kindly asked the old woman to join them on their journey. She declined because she had too much housework to do. After they left she felt as though she had made a mistake and decided to go and catch up with the kind men. After many hours of searching, she could not find them. Thinking of the opportunity she had missed,

the old woman stopped every child to give him or her a small treat in hopes that one was the Christ child. Each year on the eve of the Epiphany, she sets out looking for the baby Jesus. She stops at each child’s house to leave treats in their stockings for those who were good and a lump of coal for those who were bad. To this day, I still hang my stocking on the night of January 5 in hopes that La Befana will remember me as that little boy who wished to be found on the other side of the globe. As my children have grown, I continue to pass along this custom to them, telling the enchanting story of that kind old lady who will fill their stockings a week-and-a-half after Santa Claus does. Another Italian holiday tradition is a special cake called Panettone (pronounced PAH-NEH-TOE-NEH.) Northern Italy’s traditional Christmas cakes, known as Panettone, are golden-brown and shaped like giant mushrooms. There are lots of theories about the famous Panettone, but the most romantic of all the tales is that of a Milanese baker named Toni di Borgo alle Grazie. Toni ran his shop with a stern hand, as he did the life of his young and beautiful daughter, Adalgisa. Because of this, his faithful employee, Ughetto della Tela, knew that he would never receive Toni’s consent to marry Adalgisa, despite the love between the two, unless he could somehow raise his status from that of a “low-life” kitchen hand. Thus, to win Adalgisa’s hand, Ughetto worked feverishly after-hours creating a bread that would be sweeter and richer than anything the city had ever had in the past. Through wordof-mouth, friends of Ughetto soon came into Toni’s shop asking for the special bread containing flour, sugar, candied fruits, and grapes. The bread became an instant success. But rather than taking the credit himself, Ughetto gave the fame to Toni. And

Italian Wines for the Holidays PROSECCO
CHIANTI
Italy’s answer to France’s Champagne, this sparkling wine makes for a great aperitif. Plan your toast accordingly and pick up a few bottles of Prosecco for your guests to enjoy.
I could write a book about Chianti. I’ve written many articles about this region in Tuscany, and it will always have a special place in my heart. This is rudimentary, but Chianti follows this sequence in terms of quality, price, and time spent in oak: Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG, and Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG.
PINOT GRIGIO You can’t go wrong with this varietal if you’re serving any kind of seafood. Pinot Grigio from Italy will have a hint of citrus flavors and a dry minerality. The perfect pair with white fish and crustaceans.
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO I would be remiss if I didn’t include one of Italy’s heaviest hitters (and one of my personal favorite wines in the world.) Made of 100% Sangiovese, this wine must be aged in oak for at least two years and another three years in the cellar before it is released. Be prepared to spend some money on this. You won’t be sorry.

The health issues that typically lead to hysterectomies rest in your DNA, and while there’s no surefire way to prevent the awakening of your genetics, you can take steps to improve your odds.
fibroids affect approximately 30 to 40 percent of women during their lifetime. If medication or other treatments fail, the woman may choose a hysterectomy. 2. Abnormal, irregular, heavy or painful periods 3. Pelvic pain 4. Pain during intercourse 5. Cancer “We typically see women in their 40s and 50s having hysterectomies as that is when bleeding abnormalities usually appear,” said Molly Uhing, MD, Avera OB/GYN, “but we see
women as young as their 30s all the way to their 70s needing this procedure due to health concerns.” Hysterectomy is only considered a last resort measure if a woman is of child-bearing age and still wants to have children. The health issues that typically lead to hysterectomies rest in your DNA, and while there’s no surefire way to prevent the awakening of your genetics, you can take steps to improve your odds. Maintaining a healthy weight may help control bleeding as well as prevent cancers. If you do experience heavy periods, using hormone therapies or other minimally invasive office procedures early on can lessen the likelihood of a future hysterectomy.

“While hysterectomy is still the second most common surgery for women, the need for them among women is actually decreasing because we are finding and addressing those health issues before we get to that point,” explained Uhing.
There are three ways the procedure is typically carried out. In the vast majority of cases, hysterectomy is a minimally invasive procedure: • Trans-vaginal: The uterus and cervix are removed through the vagina. Cost effective and minimally invasive with less than 1 percent complication rate, this is the gold standard of hysterectomies. • Laparoscopic: In this procedure, the surgeon uses either laparoscopic instruments or robotic arms to remove the uterus and cervix through small incisions made in the abdomen. Sometimes the incision is made through the belly button, resulting in virtually no scar afterwards. A 1 percent complication rate and shorter recovery make this another ideal option for patients. • Open surgery: Much like a C-section, an open surgical hysterectomy involves an incision along the lower abdomen. This option is extremely rare as it requires a longer recovery and poses a 20 percent complication rate.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING
“If you need a hysterectomy, know your options,” said Uhing. “Ask if you’re a candidate for robotic surgery or another minimally invasive procedure that carries low risk.” Unfortunately, Uhing has found that many women try avoiding the hysterectomy they so desperately need in fear of losing their sex drive or hormones and starting menopause early. This isn’t true. “Female hormones are primarily produced from the ovaries, which are rarely removed at the same time as a hysterectomy,” explained Uhing. A hysterectomy in addition to a bilateral salpingo oophorectomy removes the uterus, cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes. “Because the hormones that come from the ovaries are so important to a woman’s long-term health, the only time we consider removing them is if there’s a specific problem with the ovaries or if there’s a personal or family history of cancer.” Unless you have a more invasive surgery, hysterectomy can be an outpatient procedure. In most cases, you’ll go home the same day. For the more common trans-vaginal and laparoscopic procedures, you’ll take pain medications for three to five days, be back to work within two weeks and follow a lifting restriction of no more than 10 pounds for about six weeks. Hysterectomies often resolve heavy bleeding and pelvic pain. While it can be hard to grasp that you’re losing a major organ, advanced options lessen pain and recovery time, and in most cases help you feel better than before.

Orthopedic Injury? Advice from Orthopedic Institute
V
isiting the Emergency Room (the ER) or sometimes referred to as the Emergency Department of a hospital can be a traumatic and stressful experience for anyone. However, the doctors at Orthopedic Institute want you to know you have options. Here are five suggestions from the experts:
This is an option when your situation is concerning enough that you don’t want to wait until the next day. The PA will be able to assess your injury and help determine what is best for you. You may need to see an Orthopedic Institute physician, and the PA can get the ball rolling with x-rays and possibly an MRI.
1. If you find yourself needing orthopedic care that is not life threatening, and occurs between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm, you can call OI at 605-331-5890. You will be in touch with one of the knowledgeable and caring nurses who will visit with you to find out more about the seriousness of your injury and possibly get you in with one of the OI doctors the same day, encourage you to come to the OI walk-in clinic, or go directly to the ER.
3. If you’re in need of medical care after office hours, you can call the after-hours call service at 605-331-5890. They will listen and take your message and quickly get it to the doctor who is on call for Orthopedic Institute. When he calls you back, he will help you decide how urgent your situation is and if a trip to the ER is necessary, or if you should get an appointment in the office in the next day or two.
2. If you require urgent orthopedic care between 3 – 7 pm Monday through Friday or from 11 am – 3 pm on Saturday, Orthopedic Institute offers a walk-in clinic, OI NOW, that is staffed by a professional orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA).
4. Sometimes a trip to the ER is necessary, and it is no one’s idea of a swell time. More than 130 million times a year, people in the U.S end up there—often with non-life-threatening problems that can mean hours of waiting for treatment. Before seeing a

doctor, expect to wait more than 55 minutes, the average ER wait time across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Show up on a busy night or weekend and the wait could drag on for several hours. If you do end up in the Emergency Room, most people don’t know that they can choose their own doctor there. Your ER doctor may try to keep you within their network and not offer you a choice to choose one of the specialists you may want to see, so you have to insist on seeing the doctor you want. Exercising this option can be useful if you regularly see an Orthopedic Institute doctor and he is familiar with your condition, or if you have never been seen by an Orthopedic Institute doctor, but want to see a doctor who
specializes in whatever landed you in the emergency room in the first place. “It can be comforting to go with a doctor you know and trust, says Dr. Peter Looby, a board certified orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic Institute. I sometimes think patients land in the ER and don’t know they have a choice, but they do.” 5. Having the ER call an Orthopedic Institute doctor who you already have a relationship with will get the process started much quicker than with a doctor who has never treated you before. This will only help get you in and out of the ER as soon as possible, and ahead of patients waiting to be assigned a doctor.

An Ozark Mountain Christmas in Branson, Missouri BY JESSICA WEISCHEDEL
B
ranson, Missouri, has many possibilities for a vacation full of excitement and adventure. With several live shows, one of the world’s top theme parks, the beautiful Ozark Mountains and three gorgeous lakes, a rich history and plenty of shopping and restaurants to enjoy, it makes for a fantastic place to visit. When the holidays come around, Branson will not disappoint the people who come to see what it has to offer. It’s called Ozark Mountain Christmas, which has been an ongoing tradition for more than 25 years. From November through New Year’s Day, the holiday season is kicked off with a variety of ways to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. The holiday light displays in Branson are impressive to say the least. New in 2015, the Ozark Mountain Christmas Lights & Village on Buena Vista Road in Branson is a drive-through Christmas light display featuring a “magical mile”, rides on the North Pole Express train, selfies with Santa, Crackling Christmas Chickens, Clydesdale horses, a life-size nativity experience, and gourmet hot chocolate to enjoy. Another display, located on Highway 76, the Trail of Lights at Shepherd of the Hills is home to the famous 160-acre outdoor theatre, Shepherd of the Hills Homestead. It is transformed into a holiday dream, and rated by the Travel Channel as one of the top 5 drive-through Christmas displays in the United States. Complete with a 230-foot-tall Christmas tree, the Trail of Lights features a series of animated characters who tell stories surrounded by millions of Christmas lights. Admission also includes a cup of hot chocolate or cider and a trip to the top of the Christmas tree, otherwise known as Inspiration Tower. A trip to Branson during the holidays just wouldn’t be complete without visiting Silver Dollar City, an internationally

awarded 1880s-style theme park featuring over 40 thrilling rides and attractions, live shows and concerts, craftsmen, food, and shops. To add to the excitement, this all sits on top of one of Missouri’s deepest caves. During Christmas season the park holds what is titled An Old Time Christmas, and is illuminated with over 5 million dazzling lights, and 1,000 decorated trees, including a special effects Christmas tree that stands five stories tall. This tree is positioned in the Main Street square near the front entrance, and is the clear focal point of the celebration. Decorated with hundreds of thousands of colorful LED lights which are choreographed to be in unison with music throughout the Square’s storefronts and other trees. Almost every building, tree, and walkway is covered with lights from top to bottom, which makes the sight something you can spend hours admiring. The Christmas on Main Street light and sound spectacular is performed every 15 minutes throughout the evening, with a lighting ceremony around the big tree at 5:30p.m. each night. Shortly afterwards, the Holly Jolly Christmas Light Parade occurs, featuring Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer & Friends, as well as many rides and attractions. As Grand Marshal, Rudolph leads the evening parade as it winds through the streets of Silver Dollar City. The live shows in Branson are worth seeing, as the city is called the Live Music Show Capital of the World. The lineup of themed shows and special performances that celebrate the season are amazing. Louisiana Music Hall of Fame member Cedric Benoit and the Cajun Connection Band spice up the holidays with Christmas on the Bayou, with some catchy Cajun music during a 30-minute show. productions are a part of An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City, both of which are free with the park admissions. A Dickens Christmas Carol takes place in a stunning Victorian period scenery and props with a talented cast of actors accompanied by a live orchestra and excellent special effects. This unique adaptation of the famous classic novel, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, uses inspiration and humor to actively tell the brilliant story of Scrooge’s journey through Christmas past, present, and future to help him realize who he really is. It’s A Wonderful Life is a holiday classic that comes to life on the Red Gold Heritage Hall stage with a cast of 14 actors performing the story of George Bailey, who discovers the value of life, family, and friends with the help of Clarence, his guardian angel. The music in this production is pre-recorded, but the costumes and special effects are especially stunning. The Living Nativity transports your family to ancient Bethlehem and reveals the real reason for the season with a musical performance of the celebration of the original Christmas
story. It takes place several times throughout the day and lasts just 15 minutes. The Frontier Fa-La-La Follies is a hilarious holiday adventure with a wild west comedy-style sing-along featuring familiar Christmas carols during a 45-minute show of dancing, singing, and fun. hen it comes to labor, the most important thing is to expect the unexpected. Knowing what you would like and outlining it in your birth plan is good, but remember to be flexible as no birth ever goes exactly according to our plans.
How do I know when I am in labor? Early labor is when you are having contractions but your cervix is not changing. This can last for two to three days, so you might get sent home from the hospital and asked to return when the contractions are closer and stronger.
Who will delivery my baby? When you are in labor, a nurse will usually be with you for a 12-hour shift, so you may have more than one nurse during your labor. Your physician or midwife will usually have an on-call provider that will handle your delivery, so it might not be your specific provider.
When is it too late for an epidural? You will usually need 30 minutes to get IV fluids, and the epidural will usually take about 30 minutes to start working. So I

usually tell patients that if they are ready to push the baby out, it is probably too late for the epidural.
How will I know when to push? You will usually know it’s time to start pushing because you will feel like you have to poop. Patients are always worried about this but the muscles you use to push your baby out are the exact same ones you use to poop. If you actually have a bowel movement, it’s not a big deal to us, and your nurse will simply clean it up.
How long will I push? First time moms can push for two to three hours. Moms who have delivered before can push for one to two hours but sometimes it can be much quicker. There is no way to estimate how long this will take.
Am I going to tear during delivery? It’s hard to predict if someone will have vaginal tears. If you do, stitches will be placed that will dissolve, eliminating the need for
removal. We usually try not to cut an episiotomy unless there is a reason to do so. You may also have swelling of your labia (lips of vagina) and ice packs work very well to help numb the area and decrease the swelling.
When will I deliver the placenta? After the cord is clamped and cut, you will still need to deliver the placenta. It usually will happen within a few minutes of your delivery but can take up to 20 to 30 minutes. You will be given Pitocin to help your uterus firm up and your nurse will need to massage your uterus to make sure it stays firm. You can see the placenta if you would like. Many women are interested to see where their baby was living for the previous nine months.
Why am I shaking after delivery? The shakes are caused from the immediate hormonal shifts that occur after delivery. They are normal. If you try to stop yourself from shaking, it usually makes it worse. They will usually go away in a few minutes.
Talk with your provider for any additional questions you may have about the labor and delivery process. You can also schedule an early OB appointment at Sanford Women’s with your choice of provider. Pick between an OB/GYN, a family medicine physician or a certified nurse midwife. Call (877) 24-WOMEN to make an appointment today.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTS f o r K i d s
BY JESSICA WEISCHEDEL
Christmas Finger Puppets Materials: Pipe cleaners, mini pom poms of various sizes, googly eyes, glue, and wire cutters. Instructions: You can create all sorts of Christmas creatures with pipe cleaners and pom poms. Decide what you want to make, such as a reindeer, a snowman, an elf, a penguin, or Santa Claus, and choose the coordinating colors of pipe cleaners and pom poms for the bodies and heads. Take the pipe cleaner and tightly wrap it around your finger, making sure the top of the pipe cleaner coils down to a smaller circle. Carefully remove it from your finger, then put a tiny dab of glue onto the wire end of the pipe cleaner and stick it straight down into the pom pom you chose for the head. Hold this in place for a few seconds so that it sticks. Now it’s time to add the accessories! Get creative with gold antlers for a deer, a sparkly red pom pom for Santa’s belly, or a black pipe cleaner for a snowman’s scarf, just to name a few ideas. Let your kids come up with more ways to create these cute little puppets and then put on a puppet show!

FOR KIDS
Gumdrop Ornaments Materials: Small styrofoam balls, spice drops or gum drops, thin ribbon, scissors, straight pins, and hot glue. Instructions: Cut a piece of ribbon about 4 inches long. This will be the hanger for the ornament. Make a loop, then secure it to the styrofoam with a straight pin. Add a little bit of glue to the top of the pin and let dry. Apply glue to the bottom of a gum drop and hold it to the styrofoam for a few seconds. Repeat until you form a circle around your ribbon, then keep working around each circle until the whole foam ball is covered.
Paper Roll Christmas Tree Materials: Even number of toilet paper rolls (the more rolls the bigger the tree), green paint, paint brushes, stapler, small christmas ornaments, and scissors. Instructions: Begin by setting aside 1, 2, or 4 paper rolls to be left unpainted or painted brown. The number depends on the size you plan to make your tree. These will make up the trunk of the tree. Paint the rest of your toilet paper rolls with green paint, inside and outside. Let them dry completely, then staple them together to make a triangle shape. Staple the tree trunk together, then glue the green tree on top, so that it sits upright. You can also choose to go without a trunk. Now it’s time to decorate your Christmas tree! Let your kids decide which ornaments and decorations they want to use. Decorate both sides or just one, depending on how you plan to display it.
Paper Plate Snowman Materials: Construction paper, string, hole punch, foam or paper plates. Instructions: In two plates, punch two holes the same distance apart at the top of one and the bottom of the other, then thread string through them both so the top and bottom overlap, and tie. At the top of one of the plates, punch another hole and thread the strings up through it. Tie at the top to form a loop. Flip the plates over so they are upside down. Now it’s time to create the snowman’s face using orange construction paper for the triangle nose, and black construction paper for the eyes and buttons. Cut out some brown construction paper for the arms, and finish off with some of your own creativity!

Simply Christmas BY AMITY SHAY
W
hen I was a little girl, my family went out of their way to give me a lovely holiday. I recall walking into my grandmother’s house and it was just something out of a Better Homes and Gardens scene. Gobs of gifts, glorious platters of food, music, the fireplace — and Santa even visited me there too. What a lucky girl I was; truly. I was blessed beyond measure and I was reminded often of the bare bones that my grandmother had during her holidays as a child. After all, growing up with one parent during the Great Depression was incredibly hard. So she decided long before I came into the picture, she’d give all that she could and she has. Still to this day, she remembers me and my children

every Christmas. It wouldn’t be Christmas for me without my grandmother in it. Now that I get to be the one making the memories and creating Christmas magic, I choose simplicity. There is always something bigger, better and way more expensive, and it is usually more than I could afford for one child, let alone four. I, being an only child, never had to share the expense, toys or anything for that matter, but it is different for me now. Growing up gifted with so much made me feel there could be “too much Christmas”. Because it isn’t about the gifts after all. I wanted something deeper for myself and my growing family.
“We make popcorn on the stove, read lots of books, watch all the classics; some are even in black and white and we bake a lot.”
I wanted simplicity and grace and gingerbread houses. Being in a go-go society where everything is busy- busy, it is nice to slow down, look around and find peace in your space. Honestly, peace is the last word I would use to describe Christmas, because as soon as November 1 rolls around, there is not a whole lot of tranquility about. How does one create those fundamental ingredients for a perfectly peaceful holiday? I suppose, to pick and choose what matters the most. For us, we love to make gifts. Be it a card, a cup or a scarf, everything it better homemade. Giving back probably is the foundation for our holiday season. We actively seek out opportunities to help make Christmas bright for many. We play favorites by picking out favorite families to spoil with goodies galore and we don’t forget our neighbors, especially if they are elderly. We make popcorn on the stove, read lots of books, watch all the classics; some are even in black and white and we bake a lot. Then every year, when it is time for gifts, it is simple. They all get a Christmas Eve gift and it is a lot of fun to put together, but even more fun when they get to open it. It is usually filled with new pajamas, an activity book or coloring book, hot cocoa, a treat and a new movie. It could be changed up every year but they are just too much fun. Plus it helps put to rest some of the excitement for the big day. Then we get to the gifts under the tree. They get four; something they want, something they need, something to play with and something to read. Simple right? Of course elves ( grandma & grandpa ) send a surprise too, but this way everything seems to flow just right. Christmas is simply my most favorite time of the year, but not because of what is waiting under the tree, but because of the memories being made around it. Toys will come, new electronic devices will go and all that will remain are the times we spent together. The stories we shared, the dreams we verbalized and Getting kids to put down their electronics the promises we made. Even though grandmother and play outside is amy no-brainer when made Christmas dazzling, I your recallbackyard the most contains the way her hair looked, her a slackline! laugh and the way the ham tasted. I don’t remember my favorite toy, but I do remember her joy.

The Christmas Story by Robert Sabuda Long ago in the town of Bethlehem, on a bright and starry night, a baby was born, a child who was called the son of God. Announced by an angel, born in a humble manger, laid in a bed of straw, visited by shepherds and wise men—the age-old, awe-inspiring story of the birth of Jesus is lovingly brought to life by master pop-up artist Robert Sabuda in six gorgeously imagined scenes, culminating in a 3-D manger sheltering humans and beasts, guarded by an angel above. Glinting with touches of gold and pearlescent foil, The Christmas Story is a visual feast, a holiday treasure to be shared with the whole family. Ages 5 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewickpress.com
The Nutcracker by Niroot Puttapipat The Nutcracker is one of the world’s most popular ballets, telling the captivating story of Clara and the Nutcracker prince as they journey into a land of fantasy. Inspired by Marius Petipa’s sets for the original production of the ballet, Niroot Puttapipat’s delicate silhouette illustrations dance across pale, watercolorwashed backgrounds in a unique interpretation. Starkly beautiful, this keepsake edition evokes all the magic and anticipation of Christmas Eve as Clara and the prince waltz between worlds—and culminates in a 3-D spread bringing the dreamlike Land of Sweets to life. It’s almost Christmas, and the sisters decorate the tree, shop for presents, and go ice-skating on the pond. Greta, of course, always knows best. Then on Christmas Eve, while Greta is sleeping, Gracie hears a funny noise. She creeps downstairs to investigate, and the next morning her very special revelation leaves chitty-chatty Greta lost for words! Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewickpress.com
The Evil Wizard Smallbone by Delia Sherman When twelve-year-old Nick runs away from his uncle’s in the middle of a blizzard, he stumbles onto a very opinionated bookstore. He also meets its guardian, the self-proclaimed Evil Wizard Smallbone, who calls Nick his apprentice and won’t let him leave, but won’t teach him magic, either. It’s a good thing the bookstore takes Nick’s magical education in hand, because Smallbone’s nemesis— the Evil Wizard Fidelou—and his pack of shape-shifting bikers are howling at the borders. Smallbone might call himself evil, but compared to Fidelou, he’s practically a puppy. And he can’t handle Fidelou alone. Wildly funny and cozily heartfelt, Delia Sherman’s latest is an eccentric fantasy adventure featuring dueling wizards, enchanted animals, and one stray boy with a surprising knack for magic. Peg + Cat: The Penguin Problem by Jennifer Oxley; Billy Aronson Peg and Cat are at the South Pole preparing to watch the ski race at the Animal Winter Games. Suddenly they spy the Penguins zooming downhill. CRASH! The Penguins apologize (“Snow problem,” says Cat), but it seems that there is a problem: the Penguins keep slamming into things! So they all try again, with Peg shouting directions each time they come to a hurdle. “Go over! Go under! Go in between!” But the Penguins still have no clue, because they don’t know what over, under, and in between mean. Luckily, Cat points out some directional arrows to follow, and a problem is solved . . . for the moment. Now can anyone figure out how to keep the ice floe the Penguins have landed on from tilting? The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy It’s late on Christmas Eve, and the little fir tree is the only tree left in the shop. What a poor thing I am, it thinks. But then a young boy enters the store, drawn in from the damp by the warmth and lights and the wonderful smell of Christmas, and he doesn’t seem to mind that the scrawny tree isn’t tall and straight like the others. . . . This magical story, beautifully illustrated by Emily Sutton, captures an unexpected and unforgettable moment of happiness that brings a whole city together. Ages 5 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewickpress.com
