30 MINUTES A DAY

to a Healthier You BY MARY MICHAELS | PHOTOS BY JULIE PRAIRIE PHOTOGRAPHY

A

s the second month of 2017 begins, many people are still working at their New Year’s resolutions to eat better, move more and achieve a healthy weight. And, the team at 9Round is ready to help. 9Round is a specialized fitness center that offers a kickboxing themed program that also incorporates functional, interval, cardiovascular, and circuit training regimens. According to local owner Corey Willis, the 9Round program consists of a system of nine challenging workout stations developed by a world champion kickboxer. Having experience in wrestling (he was a state champion), college football and even mixed martial arts competition, fitness has always been part of Corey’s life. However, when he started getting busy with a growing family, he needed a workout that was a better fit to his lifestyle…and then he found 9Round. Now, as a franchisee of two 9Round locations in Sioux Falls, he is able to put his physical education and health teaching experience to work in a unique setting. “What I love about 9Round is that it’s an upbeat and non-intimidating environment,” says Corey. “This is a workout that anyone can do, no matter their age or level of fitness experience.” The various stations provide a complete work out, and there are trainers on site that help every step of the way to guide individuals based on their fitness level. The strength stations feature dumb bells, kettle bells, medicine balls and other equipment to build strength and stamina. The kickbox stations allow you to punch and kick heavy bags to build power, speed and coordination. Finally, there is the station dedicated to the abs

and core, which Corey says is critical because your core improves your ability to perform any movement needed for work, exercise or leisure. And, all of this happens in just 30 minutes. With no set class times, members can show up at a 9Round location at their convenience and begin their half-hour program. Every three minutes, you move to a different station, and once you finish station nine, you’ve completed a full body workout. To keep things fresh and exciting, the 9Round team changes the workouts regularly. “We know that one reason people give up on exercise is that they get bored,” Corey says. “The 9Round program is flexible, so we can change the workout every day. That way, when our members come in, their bodies are always challenged, and it’s never boring.” If you haven’t ever had experience with kickboxing or punching a bag, 9Round makes it easy for you. The trainers work with members on technique, and they also provide education and assistance in wrapping your hands for support and comfort. When it comes to overall well-being, the physical activity is important, but it needs to go hand-in-hand with nutrition, says Corey. That is why the 9Round program also includes nutritional guidance. “Our plan is so easy to follow,” he says. “It makes nutrition simple, keeps you energized, adapts to your lifestyle and helps you see real results.” 9Round offers an online meal planner, plus videos, podcasts and other resources to answer members’ nutrition questions. Check out 9Round to make 2017 your healthiest year yet.

Local Farm Mom Hits the Small Screen A

s a farmer’s daughter, a farmer’s wife, a farmer and a farm mom, Bradee Pazour spends much of her time in the field and is no stranger to the barn. One place she never expected to find herself was on a TV set. That all changed this past summer when she was cast to star in the Hungry for Truth initiative’s new commercial. “It was quite the experience. I have never done anything like that,” she says. While her mother-in-law surfed the web this past summer, she came across a blog post calling for auditions for female farmers across South Dakota. Pazour channeled her community theater days and decided to fill out the application. A few days later, she got a call back and was chosen to star in the commercial. “For the shoot, they whisked me off to a trailer where hair, makeup and wardrobe people took care of me. I didn’t have any expectations since this was all new to me. I met the actresses playing the other moms, and they gave me some tips and pointers.” The commercial, which hit the screens in December, features

Pazour chatting with other moms at a local Brandon-area soccer game. One mom mentions she’s glad they brought non-GMO snacks for the kids, but Pazour lets her know that, in reality, a GMO option would be just as safe and nutritious for the hungry players. The moms discuss the pressure they face and how they’ve heard mixed information about certain types of food. Pazour says she’s in a unique position as a mother coming from the farm, surrounded by food as it’s raised. “As a mom and a farmer, I think it’s very important for other moms to know information about where our food comes from. I am excited to be involved in this commercial with Hungry for Truth because they are such a valuable resource for South Dakotans. The farmer-volunteers, their website and social media share everything you need to know about food from the farm to the plate.” Pazour married her husband, Joel, in 2010 and moved to his family’s farm south of Pukwana. There they farm alongside his

family, growing soybeans, corn and wheat, while raising a cow-calf herd and managing a feedlot operation. She says she is concerned about the quality and safety of the food she serves her children, just like any other mom. The Pazours keep this in mind when making decisions on the farm. “We raise our crops and livestock in a safe and sustainable way, thinking through the whole journey from farm to plate.” When it comes to being a mom, Pazour knows parents are under pressure to provide nutritious food for their kids. There are so many options on grocery shelves that it can be overwhelming. “Because of the great world we live in, we have so many choices when we go to the grocery store. GMO ingredients are just as safe and nutritious as non-GMO ingredients, and I think that’s important for other moms to know. I want to help them feel confident in the choices they make.” The Hungry for Truth initiative was developed and is fully funded by South Dakota soybean farmers and their checkoff. Farmer

volunteers, like Marc Reiner, chairman of the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, interact with South Dakotans at events, on social media and through the Hungry for Truth blog to talk about all things food and farming. “Today, more than ever, people want to understand where their food comes from,” said Reiner. “Who better to talk to them than the farmers who grow and raise it? That’s why we want to connect South Dakotans with farmers to have those conversations and learn more.” “Hungry for Truth supports choice,” said Reiner. “Research shows GMOs are a safe and nutritious choice, and we want people to remember that when they make decisions about food.” Now in its third year, Hungry for Truth farmer-volunteers focus on important issues. In addition to GMOs, Hungry for Truth talks about food safety and labeling, pesticide and fertilizer use, sustainability and family farms. You can learn more about Bradee, Marc and other South Dakota farmers at HungryforTruthSD.com or on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

KENNY ROGERS G

RAMMY Award-winning country superstar and music icon Kenny Rogers has enjoyed great success during his storied career of nearly six decades. The enduring Country Music Hall of Fame member and pop superstar has endeared music lovers around the globe with his amazing songs, heartfelt performances, distinctive voice, gift for storytelling and universal appeal, and in 2016, Rogers is embarking on what will be his final world tour with a show that will celebrate his musical legacy: The Gambler’s Last Deal. Rogers has played to millions of fans around the world, performing songs from his catalog of 24 Number One hits including “The Gambler,” “Lucille,” “Coward of the County,” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town,” “Lady,” “Islands in the Stream,” “She Believes In Me,” “We’ve Got Tonight,” “Daytime Friends,” “Through The Years,” “You Decorated My Life,” and “Buy Me A Rose.” The first country artist to consistently sell out arenas, Rogers has played to millions of fans around the world. Incredibly, he has charted a record within each of the last seven decades (’50s, ’60s,’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000’s, 2010’s). He has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide, making him one of the Top Ten Best Selling Male Solo Artists of All Time, according to the RIAA. Rogers has won many awards for his music and charity work, including three GRAMMY Awards, 19 American Music Awards, 11 People’s Choice Awards, eight Academy of Country Music Awards, six Country Music Association Awards (including the CMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013) and the Artist of a Lifetime Award at the CMT Artists of the Year 2015 award show. Rogers has been the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Entertainment

Buyers Association, the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music, and the Horatio Alger Award, given to those who have distinguished themselves despite humble beginnings. Rogers earned a GRAMMY Award nomination and CMA Award nomination in 2014, along with longtime friend and collaborator Dolly Parton, for their new duet, “You Can’t Make Old Friends,” the title track of Rogers’ current acclaimed 32nd studio album released by Warner Bros. in 2013. “You Can’t Make Old Friends” was also included on the American Songwriter Top 50 Songs of 2014 list. The magical Kenny & Dolly reunion was only the third time in the studio together since their “Real Love” hit in 1985. Rogers’ music has always crossed boundaries — his 28 Billboard Adult Contemporary Top 10’s is sixth-best all-time, and fourth-best among men, trailing only Elton John, Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley. Rogers was the only male artist to notch Billboard AC Top 10s in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s (only Barbra Streisand also managed that feat in those decades). Rogers has sent the most country No. 1’s to the top spot on AC (five of his eight AC No. 1’s were also country No. 1’s) and no core country artist has crossed over more titles to AC.! He is still making monumental cross-over appearances at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals up to this day. In 2013, Rogers gave his first performance at the largest outdoor arts spectacle, the Glastonbury Festival, playing to over 130,000 enthusiastic fans, and at Morocco’s world music, Festival Timitar, with upwards of 100,000 people in attendance. In 2012, the country legend was welcomed with open arms at popular U.S. festival Bonnaroo, where

Rogers performed his own set with surprise special guest Lionel Richie and later joined Phish on-stage as a surprise guest himself for a rousing version of “The Gambler.” ! Houston-born Rogers formed his first band while in high school in 1956—a doo-wop group called the Scholars—and has never quit making music. He charted as a solo artist in the late ’50s with “That Crazy Feeling” and performed the song on American Bandstand, played stand-up bass in the jazz group the Bobby Doyle Three (appearing on their album released by Columbia Records), and in 1966 became a member of the popular folk group, The New Christy Minstrels. The spotlight started focusing on Rogers when his group, the First Edition, scored their first hit, “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).” Pop and country chart success followed for the band with “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town” (when the group officially became known as Kenny Rogers and the First Edition). A string of hits, including “Reuben James,” “Something’s Burning” and “Tell It All Brother,” and a TV variety show called Rollin’ continued to make the popular group relevant. But it was Rogers’ breakthrough, GRAMMY-winning performance of “Lucille” as a solo artist in 1977 that propelled him to superstardom, launching one of the most prosperous careers in the history of music. Certified gold, “Lucille” was named Song of the Year and Single of the Year by the Academy of Country Music and also earned Single of the Year honors from the Country Music Association. “Daytime Friends,” “Sweet Music Man,” and “Love Or Something Like It” continued Rogers’ run of success. Then came his smash hit, “The Gambler,” a story song so vivid it not only delighted country and pop fans, it

also became a TV movie, starring Rogers himself in the title role as Brady Hawkes. The movie spawned four follow-ups, making it the longest running miniseries franchise on television. The five Gambler mini-series have attracted over 100 million viewers nationwide and launched a second career for Rogers as an actor on television and movies, including another TV movie based on one of his #1 hit songs, “Coward of the County.” While drawing new listeners and fans to country music in the 1980s, he came to embody the role of the sensitive male, singing such romantic hits as “Through The Years,” “She Believes In Me,” “You Decorated My Life,” and “Lady,” the biggest song of his career. In 1985, Kenny participated in the historical USA For Africa recording of “We Are The World,” the multi-celebrity performance which raised millions of dollars for famine relief in Africa. A year later, he co-chaired the audacious “Hands Across America” fund-raiser for America’s hungry. Into the late ’80s and ’90s, in addition to worldwide tours, recording new music and forming his own record label and management company, Rogers established himself as a well-respected photographer, publishing several books. He was even invited to the White House to shoot a portrait of First Lady Hillary Clinton. He also authored several short stories, and appeared off-Broadway in his Christmas musical, The Toy Shoppe, which he subsequently toured. In 1999, Rogers returned to the charts in a big way on his own record label, Dreamcatcher, with the hit and Number One video, “The Greatest,” and when the follow-up, “Buy Me a Rose,” hit Number One in 2000, Rogers, at age 61, became the oldest artist in chart history to have a Number One solo record on the country chart, proving his talent was just as vibrant and meaningful as it was when he first started out. Rogers has continued his amazing run into the 21st century with a Country Music Hall of Fame induction, a CMA Lifetime Achievement Award, two GRAMMY Award nominations (“Calling Me” with Don Henley and “You Can’t Make Old Friends” with Dolly Parton), a CMA Award nomination (“You Can’t Make Old Friends” with Dolly Parton), a Gold-certified

record (21 Number Ones), andthree critically acclaimed albums (Water and Bridges, The Love of God, and You Can’t Make Old Friends), considered by Rogers to be some of the very best work of his entire career. Never one to rest on his laurels, in this current decade, Rogers became a New York Times bestselling author. His autobiography, Luck or Something Like It – A Memoir, became a New York Times Best Seller shortly after its 2012 release. A producer of several books of photography, Rogers received an Honorary Masters of Photography from the Professional Photographers of America in 2014. Shortly following Rogers’ 2013 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a career-spanning exhibit entitled Kenny Rogers: Through The Years opened in 2014 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. The exhibit closed in June of 2015. Rogers released his first Christmas studio album in 17 years — Once Again It’s Christmas — on September 25, 2015. The record includes guest appearances by Alison Krauss, Jennifer Nettles, Home Free, Jim Brickman, and Winfield’s Locket. On the Cracker Barrel exclusive edition of the recording, Rogers is joined by The Time Jumpers (including Vince Gill) for one song. Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, Rogers, who was once voted the “Favorite Singer of All-Time” in a joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People, still loves touring and recording new music. Even so, Rogers came to a conclusion that family is more important than touring at this stage in his career, once he’s played the final date of his last world tour. “I’ve been so lucky to have enjoyed such a long career and to have such amazing support from my fans and all who have helped me along the way, but there comes a time when I need to focus on spending time with my family. My life is about my wife and my 11-year-old twin boys right now. There are a lot of things I want to do together with them to create some special memories. I don’t have a bucket list of my own…I have a bucket list of things I want to do with them.” kennyrogers.com facebook.com/KennyRogersOfficial twitter.com/_KennyRogers

magine living in three different houses in a period of eight years. For some, that might seem like your worst nightmare of moving boxes, packing and unpacking. For others, like Drew Kramer and Addie Graham-Kramer, it’s been an adventure. Drew has been involved in the construction industry for quite some time, helping others with building projects. In recent years, that evolved into the development of his own company, Wildflower Construction. Drew and Addie moved into this house two months ago, and it just happens to be right next door to another home built by Wildflower Construction. And, a previous house they built and lived in is also in the same neighborhood. “We really love this area,” Addie said of the neighborhood on the east side of the city. “We have gotten to know so many of the neighbors, and our kids all play together.” Drew and Addie have two boys, William (7) and Calvin (4). Addie says this house is considerably brighter than their previous home, with the décor featuring crisp white and gray throughout. Windows are abundant as well, which adds to the brightness with natural light coming from every direction. Drew is originally from Sioux Falls, while Addie grew up in a small Nebraska town. Both were raised living in older houses, though, so they enjoy mixing some of that traditional style with more modern design. One place that is evident is in the light fixtures. Drew and Addie each selected lighting pieces for the house. Addie chose

a more traditional crystal chandelier over the dining room table, and Drew picked what he calls the “coolest light in the house” – a geometric orb of intertwined silver that hangs over the stairs leading to the lower level. The open floor plan is perfect, both for family life and for entertaining. While Drew has included ceiling beams in other house projects, this is the first time they’ve added them to their own house – both in the living room and in the master bedroom. Built-in storage on either side of the fireplace in the living room provides a space for “kid stuff” on one side and “grown-up stuff” on the other. Addie says she likes a very clean look, and in the kitchen, that means not too much sitting out on the counter. The walkin pantry takes care of that nicely, because everything can be put away behind the door with the decorative rain glass inset. The pantry has so much storage and is big enough for William and Calvin to walk in and help fix their breakfast or lunch,

which they then can enjoy at the custombuilt island. Industrial-style pendant lights with exposed bulbs hang over the island, which also has seating for four in comfortable navy blue chairs. It’s perfect for family chats while Drew is cooking using his “baby” – the Italian-made Verona gas range with double oven. The island is also a spot for the boys to build Legos or color, or a place for adults to gather when Drew and Addie entertain. The island top is granite, and the remaining kitchen countertops are quartz, and both coordinate well with the glossy gray subway tile backsplash. The great thing about using a white and gray foundation is that anything goes for accent colors. Under the rustic dining room table with its green chair is a rug that brings in colors like orange and turquoise. A door leads from the dining area to the outdoor covered deck, which is already wired for sound in preparation for outdoor family time and entertaining after the winter thaw. Also off the kitchen area is a mud room with plenty of storage, hooks for coats and a convenient half bath. William and Calvin share a room, by choice, says Addie. Their room is spacious enough for a pair of twin beds and plenty of buckets of toys and books. Addie admits that her favorite part of the master suite is the walk-in closet with plenty of hanging space, storage drawers and shoe racks. As president of The Event Company, she occasionally is organizing events requiring formal wear, so the tall hanging racks can accommodate dresses. It also is handy for Drew, who has a distinct height advantage over Addie. “It’s really awesome, she laughs, “and I don’t have to try to reach Drew’s shelves.” Their bathroom features a dual vanity, ample storage and a roomy walk-in shower with a square rain shower head. When they moved in, they had their large silver framed mirrors leaning against the wall behind each sink. They debated hanging them but decided they liked the unique look just the way they were.

The lower level is multi-functional for times when Addie needs to do some event work from home in the evening, when William and Calvin need space to spread out and play or when a party is planned (plans are already in the works for the space for a March Madness party with plenty of TV viewing space). The bar area is against one wall, so it’s convenient but doesn’t take away from the open space in the family room. A nice nook in one corner is a spot that Addie claims for reading in a comfy chair or taking an evening conference call. The fireplace in the corner is accented with the same tile used for the living room fireplace. An old world map on the mantle brings together the traditional with the contemporary. One of the most creative areas of the lower level is the under-the-stairs space which is a play space for the boys, with plenty of room for both toy buckets and bookshelves. There are two bedrooms in the lower level, giving the family great flexibility for hosting guests or for having space

neighborhood. Right now with snow on the ground, they have a little hill that works for sledding, and Addie and Drew can check the tracks in the snow to see which house they went to visit. In the life of a builder, Addie says, it’s

not all that unusual to move fairly often. In fact, in their previous house, they didn’t even have anything hanging on the walls. However, in this new home, the living room wall holds a collage of colorful canvas prints of the family.

She admits this is her favorite house so far, because she feels like it fits their style and their family so well. And, she adds, with the pictures hanging on the wall, “This could be a sign we may be staying here for a while!”

There is no Comparison.

A Reader Favorite BY JO MCCLURE

It just wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without Marylou Nelson’s remarkable Symphony Bars. I have shared this recipe here a couple times and still receive requests from readers who have misplaced it and can’t live without it. I hope this will become one of your favorite bars as well.

Symphony Bars 1 cup margarine 1/2 tsp salt 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 3 tsps vanilla 2 cups sifted flour 2 cups chopped walnuts 2 ounces melted unsweetened baking chocolate Cream margarine and gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Sift the flour and salt together and add to the creamed mixture. Blend in the nuts and divide the dough in half. Add the melted chocolate to half of the dough. Spread the white half of the dough in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch pan and then spread the chocolate half of the dough on top of the white layer. Bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes. Frost when cool.

RECIPES

Frosting: 5 tablespoons flour 1 cup milk 1 cup sugar 2 tsps vanilla 1 cup margarine In a heavy saucepan, slowly blend the milk and flour. Cook over low heat and stir constantly until this paste thickens. Cool thoroughly. Cream margarine, sugar and vanilla in a small mixing bowl. Gradually add the thickened paste and beat on high speed for 5 minutes or until the frosting is creamy. Spread over cooled bars. Serves 28-32 bars.

Invite Aphrodite to Valentine’s Dinner BY JIM MATHIS

A

t Valentine’s Day, Cupid always seems to get top billing. The chubby little cherub is everywhere; on cards, in TV commercials and dangling from the ceiling in just about every store from mid-January right up until February 14. It’s hard to avoid the little guy. Cupid is known as the God of Love. Mythology tells us that a shot from Cupid’s arrow will fill a person with desire; that’s putting a lot of pressure on the little fella. As far as I’m concerned, he can take this year off. But what about Aphrodite? She’s the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure (and procreation, but that subject’s a little heavy for this article.) Some myths say she arose from the sea foam after Cronus cut off Uranus’ genitals and tossed them in the ocean. Ouch. I prefer the version from Homer’s Iliad that says she’s the daughter of Zeus and Dione; a much more pleasant story. But whatever her tale might be, Aphrodite lends her name to a sensual group of foods we may all want to try out this Valentine’s Day. All of these foods are thought to be aphrodisiacs – the kind of foods that make us mere mortals get in the mood for love. Some are backed up by science, some may be myths themselves, but either way, they’re worth a try.

etc. for her | February 2017 39

Strawberries

Oysters It has been said that the first person who tried an oyster must have been a brave soul. Once you get past the hard, rough shell you’re left with a kind of slimy, scary looking puddle of goo. I love oysters, but admit it; they do not look very appealing. For centuries, mankind has believed the oyster was an aphrodisiac, maybe that made them more appetizing. But in 2005, a team of American and Italian researchers analyzed bivalve mollusks - shellfish that includes oysters - and found they were rich in rare amino acids that trigger increased levels of sex hormones. So the legendary lover Casanova who claimed to eat 50 oysters for breakfast everyday may have been onto something.

Chili Peppers If you’re looking to spice up your love life, a little spice might be exactly what you need. There’s science behind this one too. Eating chili peppers stimulates the production of endorphins (the chemicals in the brain that make you feel good), and they make you sweat and speed up your heart rate, just like that feeling you have when you’re getting frisky. So spice it up, baby! And a few finely chopped chilies in a mignonette on top of a raw oyster sounds like a great way to start a meal.

Chocolate Maybe the guys who encourage us to buy the big heart-shaped boxes of Godiva are on to something. Eating dark chocolate has been shown to increase levels of dopamine, another one of those feel-good chemicals your body produces. A little sweet for your sweetie could be just what the doctor ordered!

MAN IN THE KITCHEN

Remember that scene in the movie 9 ½ Weeks? Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke made strawberries seem pretty sexy. They’ve got lots of vitamin C, which is good for you, but other than that, there’s not a lot of science behind this one as an actual aphrodisiac. But they are great dipped in chocolate, so you can’t go wrong that way.

Honey Again, that scene from 9 ½ Weeks made a lot of foods look sexy, and honey played its own sticky part. Some believe that the term honeymoon goes back to the days when newlywed couples where given a month’s worth of honeybased mead, with the hopes that a month of drinking would lead to a quick pregnancy. While that may or may not be true, there is some truth to the idea of honey as an aphrodisiac. Honey contains boron which helps to regulate testosterone and estrogen levels. Apparently the birds and the bees are on to something as well.

Tomatoes Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that protects your body and aids in repairing damage caused by disease and injury. It also relaxes blood vessels and improves circulation; I’m not saying it’s just like that famous little blue pill, but it’s a step in the right direction. So where do you find this wonder drug? Tomatoes, especially sundried tomatoes are very high in lycopene. Eat up!

Asparagus The vitamin E in these sexy little spears helps your body to create hormones like testosterone, estrogen and progesterone and stimulate sexual response. Seriously, who knew science and food could be so much fun!

Salmon In addition to keeping your heart healthy, foods that are high in Omega-3 fatty acid, like salmon, albacore tuna and yes, oysters, help to keep the sex hormones going strong. Are you starting to build a menu in your mind?

Red Wine First of all, I shouldn’t have to explain how a glass or two of wine will help to set the mood. But beyond that, red wines have a chemical called resveratrol, another powerful antioxidant that helps get the blood flowing. It’s a big part of the famous French diet and the French are known for amour!

Other aphrodisiacs include avocados, watermelon, artichokes, vanilla, bananas and even coffee; a wide selection of proteins, fruits, vegetables, spices and sweets. With this list of ingredients you should be able to put together the perfect romance-inspiring Valentine’s Day menu for you and your loved one. And Aphrodite will be there to help make sure everything works as planned. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When Jim is not in the kitchen working on a romantic dinner, he works side by side with his beloved at ADwërks, the ad agency they own in Downtown Sioux Falls..

Man’s Guide to

Valentine’s Day BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

H

ere’s a twist. I know that this is etc. for her magazine, but this is what I’d like you to do: after you read this article, leave the magazine open to this page, put it someplace inconspicuous so that your significant other stumbles upon it, and then sit back and enjoy your special Valentine’s Day. Here is my Top Ten List of wine-related things your man can get you this Valentine’s Day. But first, one of my favorite quotes: “Men are like fine wine. They start off like grapes, and it’s a woman’s job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d want to have dinner with.” Men, play close attention…and good luck!

10. Wine Charms These little decorative items are a hit with women who like to throw dinner parties. Wine charms are little ornaments that attach to the stem of the glass as an identifier. That way, after all the women go to the bathroom together and come back to a table full of glasses, they know whose is whose.

etc. for her | February 2017 43

9. Wine Diary Here’s a good one if you know your significant other is a writer or wants to learn more about wine tasting. This diary allows her to take notes on all of the different wines she samples. By taking detailed notes, you can learn how to hone your palate and become more fluent when describing wine.

7. Tickets to a Wine Dinner I love wine dinners. Wine dinners are the best way to access a wide variety of wines at a good price that includes food and service too. You usually get to sample at least four different wines and a variety of food. Take her out to a wine dinner, instead of just dinner, and show her you care.

8. Cookbook Pick one that focuses on a certain type of cuisine or regional cooking, for example Tuscany or Napa Valley. Make sure that the book includes lots of recipes that offer the option of cooking with wine. That way you can offer her the option of the two of you cooking together and drinking the leftover wine. I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.

6. Riedel Stemware for Two A must for any wine drinker, regardless of expertise. Buy her a pair of Riedel wine glasses so that every time you drink wine with her, you both are getting the most out of your experience. Riedel is a company that designs and hand makes crystal glassware

meant for specific types of wine. Visit your nearest wine store or visit www.riedel.com.

5. Cooking and Wine Pairing Night That’s right, fellas. It’s time to roll up your sleeves, do some research, and prepare a meal. No experience, no problem. You don’t have to be a professional to know how to boil water, drop some pasta, and make your own tomato sauce (or you can consult with Jim Mathis’ man in the kitchen column in this magazine.) She’ll melt when she sees you in an apron, and she will be really impressed when you pour the appropriate wine with your homemade meal. For ideas and help with your meal, talk to a chef. There are lots of great chefs in Sioux Falls, and they are always willing to help a guy in need.

4. Room Makeover Room-what?! You heard me. Women love makeovers, especially if it’s one that will enhance the aesthetics of a room in the house. Offer to do a Wine Theme

room for her. Convert a guest room, den, four-seasons room, or even a small part of a living room into a room full of wine paintings or prints, wine themed wallpaper or trim, a wine lamp, anything made out of corks (wreaths, coasters, etc.,) burgundy-colored candles, and if you’re going all-out, they even make chairs that are upholstered with fabric that has wine bottles and labels on it. Men like wine cellars, women like wine rooms. There’s a reason why she watches HGTV while you’re watching ESPN. I’m sure you can think of another four letters to insert here, but it’s Valentine’s Day — explore your feminine side.

3. Trip to Wine Country I recommend visiting Napa Valley and experiencing the awesome tasting rooms

that are at your disposal, not to mention my personal favorite (and South Dakotaowned) Jessup Cellars. If you’re cutting back on expenses this year (did you resolve to listen to Dave Ramsey?) then you can always rent the movie Sideways and take a trip to a local South Dakota winery. There are more around here than you might think.

2. Case of Wine There is nothing more impressive to your loved one than knowing what she likes. You not only know what brand of jeans she likes, but you also know the cut, style, and fit. You not only know what flavor of ice cream she likes, but you also know what toppings she likes and what kind of cone to get. You not only know what genre of music she likes, but you also know her favorite bands. This one is about

knowing what she likes and going above and beyond just buying her a bottle of Riesling. Find out her favorite winemaker, winery, label, or whatever her most favorite is, and then buy her a case of it. It’s that simple. Impress her by knowing her.

1. Moscato d’Asti When all else fails, when you can’t think of something romantic, or you don’t know exactly what she likes, go with a Moscato d’Asti. There are too many different names of producers of Moscato to list them all, but if you go to your preferred wine store, they will be more than happy to help you out. Then you take that bottle to the one you want to be with, and you uncork it for her. And as you are pouring this sweet, sparkling Italian wine, you say, “I love you, let me count the ways…”

Carpe Vino this Valentine’s Day! Riccardo will be counting the ways with his wife, Marybeth, while they count their blessings with their three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon. SICK?

Should You Stay Home or Tough it Out? BY AVERA HEALTH

D

o your job. Here in the Midwest, our strong work ethic is almost taken for granted. But when you’re sick, it’s time to shelve that good attitude. “Gutting it out” when you’re shedding a virus around the workplace is not productive. Scott Hiltunen, MD, an Avera Medical Group internal medicine physician, said we can all use a bit more education when it comes to this topic. We are diligent to a fault, but when we’re running a temperature, coughing or suffering from symptoms like diarrhea or vomiting, we’re more-than-likely making others ill.

“You’re actually not helping your business, company or team by coming in sick, because when you do, you’ll share the sickness. You probably won’t be too productive anyway,” he said. “What if your coworker gets sick and passes that to an infant or elderly person? You’re doing everyone more of a favor by just staying home sick and getting better. Think about it: someone may take your germs and share them.” Too often, people go in, figuring that’s what is expected. But when employers push people to come in, it’s counter intuitive. That sick employee will spread it around, and then the business may be even more short-handed.

“You’re actually not helping your business, company or team by coming in sick, because when you do, you’ll share the sickness. You probably won’t be too productive anyway.”

“If you feel something coming on, treat each symptom aggressively with over-the-counter medicines,” Hiltunen said. “I will take multivitamins, especially ones with plenty of zinc, to zap germs before the cold gets too bad. You have to hit it that first day or the effectiveness of that step evaporates.” When you’re coughing, facing a fever of 100.5 degrees or higher or you have a runny nose – if you have the whole smorgasbord of sickness – stay home. Rest and hydration will help you get through those first 48-72 hours, when you’re most likely to share it with coworkers without even knowing it. “If you have an active cough or a low-grade fever, consider whether or not you could have the flu – especially if you didn’t get the flu vaccine,” Hiltunen said. “It’s important to remember that flu treatments doctors

can provide work best if patients get them right away.” Young children, older folks and anyone with a compromised immune system, such as chemotherapy patients, should get to their doctor’s office right away when facing symptoms, be it a cold or the dreaded flu. If that fever goes up to or exceeds 102 degrees – especially after taking ibuprofen to tamp it down – it’s time to go see your doctor. “When we get calls on this, we usually ask if they person is pale, has headache and confusion, or if they seem to be in distress,” Hiltunen said. “If they do, they are asked to come in so we can make sure they are OK.” Another option available is the use of the AveraNow virtual visits via smartphone or laptop. They can help see a provider

without leaving home. Once you’ve decided to stay home, use over-the-counter medicine to treat symptoms and, yes, have chicken soup and juice, because they offer vitamins and comfort that will help. Hydration helps your body fight the germs, but Hiltunen said it’s a myth that you can “flush” your system faster. Remember that even a mild case of dehydration can make your cold symptoms worse or make them linger. “Even doctors stay home and recover instead of coming in, so we practice our own advice – and we hope you will as well,” Hiltunen said. “Respect yourself, your coworkers and their families and your customers enough to know when to call in sick. We’ll see you back at work when you’re feeling better.”

A Check Up On Your

New Year’s Resolution ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE

S

o, now that we are a few weeks into the New Year, how are those New Year’s resolutions treating you? Have you lost that dreaded 15 pounds? Can you get through an entire spin class without coasting? If your answer is yes, good for you! Here are some physical effects your body is going through because of your dedication to working out that you may not even be aware of:

Joints & Bones If bone density is a priority for you (it starts to decrease once you reach your maximum in early adulthood) training can actually have a positive effect on your joints and bones. Inactivity is the quickest

route to brittle bones. Weight-bearing exercise helps build up your bone mass and staves off bone disease and weakness of joints.

Blood Flow So you’ve heard the phrase “get your blood pumping” when it comes to exercise, but what does that even mean? Well, when you’re working out or training, your blood flow is redirected to the most pressing areas of need, namely muscles, where the increase of oxygen and decrease of waste and acid buildup improves flow efficiency in the long-term.

“The process of working out delivers the right hormones and other elements to your muscular system to improve your athletic prowess over time.”

better over time at pumping more blood to the most effective locations in the body. This means a more efficient distribution of blood with a lower heart rate, something virtually impossible in a body devoid of frequent exercise.

Lung Capacity The fact of the matter is, when you’re working out, you’re pushing your lungs to their maximum breathing capacity. This often means you’re using 15 times as much oxygen when working out versus when you’re standing still. There’s a reason this has positive longterm effects. Each time you reach your maximum oxygen intake you’re building up the level at which it normally rests. The more you exercise, the more this level increases and improves your fitness.

Muscles Brain Function One of the bonuses of improved blood flow is improved brain function - exercise and fitness actually has positive physical effects on your brain power. You might notice your ability to focus and recall facts is improved immediately following a workout. It’s a direct result of improved blood flow.

Cardiology Blood flow is pretty much a wash without the heart, another element of the body that undergoes distinct physiological effects during training. With frequent physical activity, your heart becomes

When your muscles are in action, they require more oxygen and blood vessels expand to allow this intake. And the more they’re used, the more nutrients are delivered, spurring growth and ability. The process of working out delivers the right hormones and other elements to your muscular system to improve your athletic prowess over time. Now that you know about all of the great things that are happening to your body, aren’t you glad you are sticking with your New Year’s resolution? If you’re not, it’s never too late. G

lacier National Park in Montana is a place of pristine wonder, with several different things to see and do. At ten miles long and 472 feet deep, Lake McDonald is the largest lake at Glacier, and a classic glacial feature you won’t want to miss. With its glorious view of the mountains on the north, south, and east, and shores lined with colorful pebbles, this lake offers several ways for travelers to enjoy its beauty. The wildlife is plentiful, with species including black bear, whitetail and mule deer, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. There are many spots for a picnic lunch along the Going-To-The-Sun Road that winds alongside Lake McDonald for miles. Accessible from this road are several campgrounds that get you to the lake, including Fish Creek and Sprague Creek. Off the Going-To-The-Sun Road, you can also find Lake McDonald Lodge, which offers inns on the lake, restaurants, trails, a post office, shops, and more. Built in 1913, horseback riding, tours by bus or boat, day hikes, and a free shuttle service can also be enjoyed here, as well as majestic views of the sunset and mountains. The Cobb House features larger units, while Snyder Hall offers more of a hostel-like environment with access to a shared bathroom. Visitors can also rent out cabins at the Lodge, as well as find some great dining options. Enjoy a full breakfast buffet or order from the menu and enjoy a local draft beer at Russell’s Fireside Dining Room. Choose from an impressive wine list and an all-you-can-eat buffet at Jammer Joe’s Grill and Pizzeria. Enjoy a drink with some lunch or dinner at Lucke’s Lounge, which is an all-day full-service bar and grill. Also located in this area is Motel Lake McDonald, which

is made up of two 1950s-style buildings decorated with a comfortable, rustic feel and modern amenities. Another lodging option found at Lake McDonald is Apgar Village. There are several shops, a couple of inns, a restaurant, and a campground here. Located on the lake, you will find a beautiful beach with amazing views of the lake and the mountains. At Apgar Village, you can take part in boat and bike rentals, horseback riding, a plethora of tours, and a shuttle service. Village Inn offers full kitchen units with a newly renovated look and feel. There are small motel rooms and simple amenities here, but it is a fabulous option for a vacation to a national park. There are also cabins of various sizes that include kitchens. Serving food all day, West Glacier Restaurant offers a traditional dining atmosphere as well as a walk-up window for ice cream and

The secondlargest campground in Glacier is Fish Creek Campground, which also has a program amphitheater with nightly rangerled programs, as well as awesome views of the lake and many day hikes starting at Fish Creek. The smallest campground is Sprague Creek Campground, which is first-come first-served for campsites with spots filling up quickly in the summer months. A much longer trip, the West Side Crown of the Continent Tour starts in Lake McDonald Valley and travels up Going-To-The-Sun Road to the top of the Crown of the Continent at Logan Pass and down through the St. Mary Valley, then out to the prairies of Big Sky Country. Experience Swiftcurrent Valley and enjoy an optional lunch at Many Glacier Hotel. Lake McDonald is sure to have something for everyone in the family and would be a vacation the family would soon not forget.

“Many factors contribute to diaper rash, some of which parents have little to no control over. Fear not, dear parent! Understanding what diaper rash is, the causes of diaper rash and the many options available to help reduce risk can give parents piece of mind.”

D

iaper rash is one of the most common skin problems in infants and toddlers. Babies are bound to get at least one diaper rash during their roughly three years in diapers. Diaper rash creates distress for both babies and parents. It can be painful and irritating for babies, and even worse, it can cause parents anxiety and doubt in their parenting skills. Many factors contribute to diaper rash, some of which parents have little to no control over. Fear not, dear parent! Understanding what diaper rash is, the causes of diaper rash and the many options available to help reduce risk can give parents piece of mind.

Why do children get diaper rash? There are a few unique characteristics of children’s skin and bottoms that make them so susceptible to rash and irritation. Baby skin is different — it is more sensitive and holds more water than adult skin. Additionally, the diaper environment can create friction and irritation. It’s the baby version of chafing! Children in diapers are more prone to fungal and bacterial infections of the diaper area. The diaper environment traps moisture and stool against the skin. Exposure to urine and stool increases the pH of the skin and makes certain enzymes found

S

in stool more active. Activating these enzymes causes skin break down, triggering a rash to develop.

Breastfeeding can also help lessen diaper rash. Breast fed infants have stool with lower pH, and this is less irritating to the infant’s skin.

Are there ways to prevent diaper rash? The number one weapon to prevent diaper rash is frequent diaper changes. Decreasing exposure to urine and stool decreases rash. Using absorbent diapers can also prevent diaper rash. In studies, children in absorbent disposable or cloth diapers have less diaper rash than those in less absorbent versions. Absorbent diapers keep moisture in the diaper and away from baby’s skin, decreasing wet skin that causes increased irritation, friction and pH. Another prevention method is avoiding harsh soaps or wipes. Most baby wipes provide excellent cleansing and protection against rash. However, avoid wipes with a chemical abbreviated MI, which has been shown to irritate baby’s skin. Though often blamed, wipes aren’t the usual cause of diaper rash. Rather, most often friction from wiping is the cause. When a baby’s bottom is wiped with a wet wipe, the friction can remove the natural skin barrier and chafe the skin. Since babies need to be wiped six to eight times per day, repeated friction can cause diaper rash. Prevent this by minimizing scrubbing when cleaning baby’s bottom.

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

What can be done to help alleviate diaper rash? Provide a barrier to protect the irritated skin from urine, stool and friction. There are various barrier creams out there. Look for ones containing zinc oxide, petrolatum or both. Studies show these creams can improve symptoms in as little as 12 hours. Apply the barrier cream with each diaper change. If the infant is just wet, don’t wipe all of the previous cream off. Simply air or pat dry the diaper area and apply another layer. Increasing the frequency of diaper changes can also help.

When is it time to see a doctor? Watch for signs of a fungal or bacterial rash. These will need to be treated with medication. Fungal rashes appear red, raised and rough, often spreading outward. Bacterial rashes are red, can appear pimplelike or cause ulcers, or broken down skin. Contact a physician if you have been using a barrier cream frequently for five to seven days and aren’t seeing improvement. Also contact a physician if your child seems to be in extreme pain or is not eating well.

FOR KIDS

Melted Crayon Heart Card

Materials: Heart-shaped mold (aluminum or silicone), many different colored crayons, card stock, cutting board, large knife, large bowl with water, paper, and glue dots. Instructions: This is a project for your child to mostly watch, but they will be fascinated! Soak about 30 crayons in water for 15 minutes, then take some time to remove their wrappers. Dry off the crayons, then cut them into little pieces using a knife and cutting board. Fill the molds with the crayon pieces using various colors in each one. Heat the oven to 230 degrees, then put the mold into the oven. Melt the crayons for about 10 minutes, then remove the mold to add more crayon pieces to every heart to make them bigger. Place back in the oven until the crayons have melted completely, then let them cool down. Pop the hearts out of the mold, then use glue dots to attach them to some card stock to create your card, then have your kids help decorate around the crayon heart.

Celery Stamped Bouquet Card

Materials: Red and green craft paint, celery stalk, knife or kitchen shears, and white construction paper. Instructions: Fold the construction paper in half. Cut a stalk of celery at the base. Press the base into red paint, then carefully press down onto the top of the paper. Make sure to apply even pressure when you press down, and stay still so the stalk’s shape shows up nicely. Once dry, add some leaves and stems with green paint. Write your message on the outside of the card once all the paint has dried.

Painted Newspaper Heart Card

Materials: Newspaper, washable watercolor paints, paintbrush, heartshaped cookie cutter, scissors, glue, and card stock. Instructions: Cover your table with newspaper that includes more words than photos. Have your kids paint the newspaper with watercolor paint, using multiple colors. Hang the painted newspaper to completely dry. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to trace hearts onto the newspaper, then cut the heart shapes out. Glue the hearts onto card stock to make Valentine’s Day cards!

Books

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE WONDERFUL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN WE HAVE COME ACROSS THIS MONTH. WE HOPE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE AND ALSO INTRODUCE OTHERS BEING RELEASED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ENJOY. Smashie McPerter and the Mystery of the Missing Goop by N. Griffin Smashie McPerter Investigates When the third-graders of Room 11 learn that they all must take part in a musicale, Smashie can’t wait to sing something heartfelt and loud. But the others are not so eager. Luckily, Charlene’s mom has agreed to donate her special gel that lengthens and sculpts hair into shapes (from a musical note to a roller skate), and soon, with the help of some retro sixties go-go dancing, all the kids are raring to go. That is, until their jars of goop go missing! Who would steal their beloved Herr Goop, and why? Time for Smashie and her best friend, Dontel, to get out their Investigation Notebooks! Discussions of motives and perps, hasty mis-accusations and apology brownies, a math lesson used to crack a mysterious code, and more than a few choice red herrings build up to a truly hilarious madcap finale. Starring a quirky and relatable heroine, a level-headed sidekick, and an appealing group of good kids, this entertaining and lighthearted mystery may well have readers donning their own Investigator Suits. Ages 7 yrs - 10 yrs Candlewick Press Around America to Win the Vote Two Suffragists, a Kitten, and 10,000 Miles by Mara Rockliff In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The women’s suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayers—not to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mud—the two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause. CHILDREN’S BOOKS

The Tightrope Walkers by David Almond A gentle visionary coming of age in the shadow of the shipyards of northern England, Dominic Hall is torn between extremes. On the one hand, he craves the freedom he feels when he steals away with the eccentric girl artist next door, Holly Stroud—his first and abiding love—to balance above the earth on a makeshift tightrope. With Holly, Dom dreams of a life different in every way from his shipbuilder dad’s, a life fashioned of words and images and story. On the other hand, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the brutal charms of Vincent McAlinden, a complex bully who awakens something wild and reckless and killing in Dom. Alphonse, That Is Not OK to Do! by Daisy Hirst Once there was just Natalie. And then there was Alphonse, too. Natalie mostly doesn’t mind Alphonse being there—they both like naming pigeons (“Banana!” “Lorraine!”), bouncing things off bunk beds, and sharing a story together on the chair. But Alphonse sometimes draws on things that Natalie has made. And when she finds him eating her favorite book, she’s had enough: “Alphonse, that is not OK to do!” With bold illustrations and a subtle touch, Daisy Hirst visits the familiar territory of sibling squabbles—and the touching bond beneath it all that sees little monsters through. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs Candlewick Press

Du Iz Tak? by Carson Ellis Du iz tak? What is that? As a tiny shoot unfurls, two damselflies peer at it in wonder. When the plant grows taller and sprouts leaves, some young beetles arrive to gander, and soon—with the help of a pill bug named Icky—they wrangle a ladder and build a tree fort. But this is the wild world, after all, and something horrible is waiting to swoop down—booby voobeck!—only to be carried off in turn. Su! With exquisitely detailed illustrations and tragicomic flair, Carson Ellis invites readers to imagine the dramatic possibilities to be found in even the humblest backyard. Su! Ages 4 yrs - 8 yrs Candlewick Press

Goodnight Everyone by Chris Haughton The sun is setting, and everyone in the forest is getting sleepy. The mice, rabbits, and deer all give great big yawns as they snuggle up with their families for the night. But someone isn’t sleepy just yet. Little Bear thinks he can stay awake a bit longer. Can he do it? Chris Haughton’s bold and vibrant illustrations will captivate little ones eager to stay up just a teeny bit longer, while sweet depictions of animals cozying up in their beds for the night will soon have them yawning off to a dreamland of their own. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs Candlewick Press

Lucky Lazlo by Steve Light Lazlo is in love. He selects the perfect red rose and sets off to the theater to present it to his beloved, an actress currently starring in Alice in Wonderland. When a naughty cat snatches the flower, Lazlo gives chase. Through the stage door, round and round backstage, through the orchestra pit they go, wreaking havoc along the way. Readers are treated to an array of delightful characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic, along with an insider’s view of the workings of a majestic theater. An author’s note describes the numerous superstitions related to theater that appear in the book, and invites readers to spot them. Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press

A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers; Sam Winston A little girl sails her raft across a sea of words, arriving at the house of a small boy and calling him away on an adventure. Through forests of fairy tales and across mountains of makebelieve, the two travel together on a fantastical journey that unlocks the boy’s imagination. Now a lifetime of magic and adventure lies ahead of him . . . but who will be next? Combining elegant images by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston’s typographical landscapes shaped from excerpts of children’s classics and lullabies, A Child of Books is a stunning prose poem on the rewards of reading and sharing stories—an immersive and unforgettable reading experience that readers will want to pass on to others. Ages 0 mos and up Candlewick Press

Dinosaurs Don’t Have Bedtimes! by Timothy Knapman “Dinnertime!” calls Mommy. Well, dinosaurs don’t have dinnertimes! They eat whatever they like (gobble, crunch!), make a dreadful mess, and hate to take baths and wear pajamas (where would their tails go?). Dinosaurs are much too big to play nicely—they rampage and stomp around and knock things down! But maybe they’d listen to a bedtime story, if it’s ROARY. . . . With exuberant illustrations merging bedtime routines with a little boy’s fantasy world—and showing Mom’s role in both—this ode to dinosaurs, wild imaginations, and cleverly won bedtime snuggles is sure to get roars of approval from kids and parents alike. Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewick Press
