“E

vents are landmarks in our lifetime that transform into memories.” That is how Katie Jane Murphy approaches her work as an event planner, having recently launched her own business called Jane Rae Event Planning. “This is not just a job,” Murphy explains. “This is my passion. I truly want to take my customers’ vision and transform it into memories they will always carry with them.” A Sioux Falls native, Murphy graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in hospitality, tourism and restaurant management. She then moved to south Texas with her fiancé, Matt. However, Murphy says, she was able to convince her “southern gent” to move up north, coming back to her hometown. Murphy loves the detailed world of planning, whether it’s a small get together with friends or the intricate details of a glamorous wedding. Murphy has built her skill set in the events industry working with corporate, non-profit and social events, and weddings (including her own wedding in 2014). “Planning events can be overwhelming,” she says. “My goal is to use my experience to create that wedding or event you have always dreamed of, and save you stress and money in the process. I take care of the details so that you can enjoy the fun and the memories!” Murphy frequently uses hashtags in her social media posts like #becolorful and #lovewhatyoudo. Her office environment embodies both of those with its bright and cheery decor. To keep up with the latest in colors, flowers and other design elements, she keeps “trend

boards” on the office wall with sample themes like Antique Chic, Dreamy Greens, Lovely Boho, Whimsical Charm and Modern Sleek & Chic. It takes quite a bit of coordination to plan any event, but how does an event planner keep everything straight when multiple events are in the works at the same time? One of Murphy’s tools is the calendar wall. A corner of the office is filled with monthby-month calendar pages where Murphy can track all of her event dates. Murphy believes that a key to success is taking the time to get to know her clients, so she offers unlimited planning sessions with continuous communication to be sure everything is just right. She can offer her expertise on venue selection, developing a theme and design, creating a budget, working with other vendors, creating the day of event schedule and even etiquette advice. A new partnership with Ashlynn Elliff Designs offers customers discounts on invitations and stationery needs. “I am so excited about this partnership with Ashlynn Elliff,” says Murphy. “The designs are creative and we share the same passion for creating that one-of-a-kind event for our clients.” One tip Murphy has for anyone planning an event is to start early. “As our calendar wall fills up, we encourage people to get in touch with us early so we can help them pick their event date and start the fun part of planning. This is truly a love of mine, and I want to help them enjoy the journey!” Murphy consults with clients Monday through Saturday by appointment.

ood may be essential as fuel for the body, but good food is fuel for the soul. –Malcom Forbes There are many definitions of what it means to be an “old soul.” To some, it means being introspective and thoughtful. To others, it means thinking more about the big picture of life and less about trivial, materialistic things. Chef Shonna Haugen describes being an old soul this way, “An old soul may spend time by herself, yet is never alone because there is the constant presence of

12 out and about |

a calming spirit.” She says the term “old soul” is all-encompassing for her, for her food and her restaurant – Old Soul Café and Catering, which opened in July 2016. The concept of her own restaurant has always been in the back of her mind, but it has changed over the years as she has changed and grown with each new life experience. She started her career in graphic design and just fell into cooking. Over the past 20 years, Haugen has worked in fine dining, casual dining and catering. “Ten years ago, this would not have been

my concept,” she said, motioning to the eclectic décor, “But I believe everything I have done in the past was leading up to this. When I began to really think about opening my own restaurant, and when I found this location, it all felt right.” Haugen says she spent weeks redecorating, with everything from plants and old concert posters to some of her own art creations, like a sign made from license plate letters and a light fixture made with dangling cheese graters. “I touched every corner of it,” she

says, “because I wanted to create an environment that was comfortable and welcoming. When you come here, I want you to have an experience.” At first, Haugen says, opening a restaurant can be somewhat ego-based. “You know,” she explains, “it’s like my menu, my food, my place.” But, she adds, that perspective quickly gave way to something else – something more. “We don’t have customers,” she says, “we have family. So everything we do is for our family.”

There are regulars who come in for breakfast, groups who come in for coffee or tea, friends or coworkers who meet for lunch, and Haugen and her team all express how happy it makes them to be able to get to know each person who walks through the door. The menu, like the décor, brings together different styles and cultures. You may find eggs or pancakes on the breakfast menu (called Good Day Sunshine), and sandwiches and salads on the lunch menu (named Afternoon Soul Shine), but

they all have Haugen’s special twist. For example, breakfast offers Huevos Locos – scrambled eggs with triple bean salsa, goat cheese, yellow “sweety” peppers and avocado slices with grilled white corn tortillas. A twist on the lunchtime BLT is the Old Soul Café SLT – fresh Atlantic salmon and smoked salmon with fresh greens, red onion and heirloom tomatoes with lemon caper cream cheese on a French baguette. Haugen’s background in art carries over to her creative cooking.

etc. for her | March 2017 13

“Every plate is like a blank canvas,” she says. Haugen’s energy bowls are a hit at breakfast and combine healthy grains with other tasty ingredients. One to try is the chocolate almond protein bowl with gluten free steel cut oats, quinoa, chocolate protein powder, shredded zucchini and spinach topped with toasted almonds, sliced bananas, creamy peanut butter and almond milk. In addition to being mindful of those needing gluten-free options, Haugen also includes vegan and vegetarian items on the menu – such as the “BEETnik” salad with slow-roasted beets on top of fresh greens, red onion, heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese and yellow sweety peppers, topped with balsamic glaze and olive oil. There is also a vegetarian Bahn Mi sandwich and the Vegan Rosti, a savory potato and vegetable cake pan-seared and topped with three-bean tomato relish, radish sprouts and avocado with a lemon roast garlic vinaigrette. Haugen offers specials daily, including soups, sandwiches and desserts. Her specialty dessert is cheesecake. You can stay up to date on the featured items by following the Old Soul Café on Facebook (recommendation: watch for the coconut banana cream cheesecake with chocolate ganache feature day, and then drive there as fast as you can). The café ensures their beverages are as calming and nourishing as their food, with agua fresca, or their specialty lemonade infused with unique accent flavors. They also feature locally roasted coffee from The Breaks. For younger diners, the Old Soul Café offers tried and true favorites like a grilled cheese, chicken or cheese quesadilla or PBJ – all served with fruit. The restaurant, which is located in a strip mall on Minnesota Avenue, offers some parking in the front, but Haugen painted a colorful back entrance to encourage her customers – or rather, her family members – to take advantage of additional parking there. Having spent many years in the restaurant industry working nights and weekends, Haugen is enjoying her weekday breakfast and lunch business, while still providing some catering for evening events. She caters orders of all sizes and can host on-site parties at Old Soul for up to 50 people. Here at the Old Soul Café, you will get good food to fuel the body, but you will have an experience to fuel the soul.

hen Rory and Amber Kelly were first married, they found a small house in central Sioux Falls and immediately fell in love with the neighborhood. When they found out they were expecting their first child, they knew they would like a little more room eventually. In an interesting turn of events, a house just down the street went on the market, so they acted quickly and completed a two-block move. “I had even finished decorating a baby room at the old house,” says Amber, “but when we found out this house was available, we jumped on it. We were so happy to be able to stay in this neighborhood.” The previous owners had left an old photograph of the house, which was built in the late 1930s or early 1940s, and it looked very much like that when the Kellys moved into it in 2009. Three kids and several remodeling projects later, the Kelly family has settled into their home. At first, Amber says, they just worked on a few cosmetic changes like pulling up carpet and taking off wallpaper. After their son Jude turned one (he’s now 7), they took on more extensive projects like removing walls to open up the kitchen and dining area and adding on to the house. Other remodeling projects happened around the arrival of daughter Jai (5) and son Gibson (2). Both Amber and Rory agree that the

biggest challenge over the years was just living through the remodeling process. “Being pregnant and living through all of the construction was hard,” says Amber. Rory uses the word “brutal.” “But,” she adds, “it was kind of fun coming home from work each day to find out what was new or what had been finished.” The couple had a lot of help from Brad Weber of Weber Construction as their general contractor and from the team of Penny and Jess at Simply Perfect. “We really relied on Penny and Jess for everything like paint colors and furniture,” says Amber. “There’s like 8,000 different shades of grey, so it was easier to have them help pick the colors.”

The Kellys learned the value of developing a good relationship with their contractor and designers, because it made the entire process easier when the professionals knew the Kelly’s style and could make recommendations accordingly. While the work at times was extensive, including having to replace old sewer pipes and add drain tile and four sump pumps, the modern updates mesh well with the original character of the house. The white and grey palette provides a bright look throughout the house. It also allows for just about any kind of furniture and accents. The kitchen features white cabinets with dark hardware, white subway tile backsplash and a dark island with rustic wood and metal stools. It creates a sort of “farmhouse chic” look that carries into the dining area with its solid wood table with both chairs and a long bench, and a unique rustic tea chest with open cubbies and metal drawers for storage. The stainless appliances and black and white zigzag curtains in the kitchen and dining room add modern flair to the space. On the main floor, the Kellys added new space for a walk-in pantry, mudroom and office off the kitchen. The old staircase leading up to the second floor was a little “creaky,” so they replaced the staircase but kept the charm of an older house with hardwood steps and a carpet runner up the middle. Their renovations added rooms for the boys and a master bath for Amber and Rory. “Before the remodel, there was only one bathroom upstairs,” says Amber, “so getting a master bath was a real treat!” They also moved the laundry to the second level, and added some built-in storage and a desk in a hallway space,

Landscaping. There is plenty of room for the kids to play, and the landscapers also created a seating area complete with fire pit and built-in grill and bar. “There are a lot of marshmallows roasted on the fire pit,” says Amber. Although they still have little projects here and there to finish, the Kellys agree that making this house their home was well worth the effort. Surrounded by neighbors and close to schools, Amber says she can see them staying here for a long time. That seems to be fine with the kids, as one of the boys stated “I never want to move.”

A Summer Camp Meal

Worth Eating! BY JIM MATHIS

38 nest |

MAN IN THE KITCHEN

A

s each new issue of this magazine hits the newsstands, those of us who write for the publication get a note from our esteemed publisher suggesting a theme, this month it was Summer Camp. Hmmm. That’s a bit of a challenge, I haven’t been to summer camp myself in… well let’s just say a lot of summers have passed. And since we don’t have kids, the forlorn letters home from camp are just the stuff I see in commercials. When I suggest “roughing it” to my bride, she thinks I’m talking about flying coach or staying in a hotel without a suitable bar. Needless to say, I don’t camp much. But when I do, don’t expect to find Oscar Mayer on the fire. If it’s worth starting a fire to cook it, it might as well taste good. When I think about camping and eating in the great outdoors of course, my mind goes to the easy things; s’mores, heck yes, but hamburgers and hot dogs...we can do better. One thing is for sure when you’re eating outside, table manners can slide a bit, so I think finger food. Well, at least kind of foods you can eat with your hands. Think shish-kabobs; meat and veggies on one easy-to-grill stick, or corn on the cob that just begs to be picked up and gnawed on. Here’s another idea; a three course meal you can cook on a grill in about the same time as a hamburger. And it starts with my favorite finger food, lamb chops. They’re the beginning of an elegant meal that is a cinch to make. It’s meat with its own handle, like a tidy little lamb-sicle. Start with a rack of lamb and ask your butcher for it “frenched.” If your butcher can’t help you out, you’re probably not talking to a butcher, just some dude in an apron. While it sounds fancy, frenched just means the meat has been trimmed off of the bones, so it looks nice and neat

etc. for her | March 2017 39

when it’s cooked. When you get the rack home, cut between each bone and you’ll have eight pretty little chops. You could also have you butcher do this part, but seriously, it’s not that hard. Each rack will serve two people (or one really hungry guy) with 4 chops each, so plan accordingly. Throw the chops in a zip-top bag with a good splash of olive oil and healthy dose of minced garlic, fresh rosemary, parsley, kosher salt and cracked pepper. Squish it around to coat the chops, and then drop the bag in the chill chest and you’re on your way to the KOA. Side dishes? What tastes great and makes your pee smell funny? That’s right, asparagus! When you’re at the butcher, have him cut you a dozen or so thin slices of Prosciutto di Parma. Then take 3 to 5 stalks of asparagus (depending on their size) and wrap them tightly into a bundle with a couple slices of prosciutto. Put them in a zip-top with a splash of olive oil, seal and into the cooler they go. For an opening volley, try a grilled salad.

Yep, you read that right, a grilled salad. Take a heart of romaine and cut it in half lengthwise. Drizzle lightly with some good olive oil and drop it on the grill cut side down for just a minute or two, just enough to get some color on the leaves and the edges start to wilt. Top with some shaved parmesan and good Caesar dressing and you’re set. Making your own Caesar at home is easy, but since you’re roughing it, no one will blame you if you tuck a small jar between the beers in the cooler.

Now, when you’re at the campsite and all the other cooks grab their wienies, put the lamb chops and the asparagus bundles on the grill for about three to four minutes each side. That’s it. Don’t be a

Bitter Bidder BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

Y

ears ago, I attended a national conference in Orlando. Filled with motivational speakers, in-depth seminars, interactive workshops, invigorating presentations, and lots of networking and social functions, I was a sponge for three days straight. Sounds like your typical convention, right? What made this one a little more interesting is that they threw in a wine auction as a fundraiser. So naturally, as a wine writer, I perused the offerings with an astute eye. I didn’t really have any intention of bidding on something, though. I didn’t want to be a bitter bidder. As I quietly examined the bottles up for auction, I overheard so many bidders sounding bitter. They would pick up the bottles, scan for the vintage, and scoff, “I can’t believe they’re auctioning the ’02 because the ’03 was so much better…” You get my drift. I was surrounded by wine snobs who were missing the point of the auction. We were there for something bigger than ourselves, not to judge. One of the most expensive bottles of wine ever sold was at an auction at Christies, London, in December 1985. The buyer paid £105,000 (about $157,000) for a bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite claret that was engraved with the initials of Thomas Jefferson. Eleven months after the sale, the cork dried out, slipped into the bottle and spoiled the wine, making it the most expensive bottle of vinegar in the world. That’s the quick version of this amazing story with a bitter ending for the bidder. The truth is, the excitement is in knowing the

bottle you’re bidding on, not the end result… The bottle was hand-blown dark-green glass and capped with a nubby seal of thick black wax. It had no label, but etched into the glass in a spindly hand was the year 1787, the word “Lafite,” and the letters “Th.J.” The bottle came from a collection of wine that had reportedly been discovered behind a bricked-up cellar wall in an old building in Paris. The wines bore the names of top vineyards—along with Lafite, there were bottles from Châteaux d’Yquem, Mouton, and Margaux—and those initials, “Th.J.” Evidence suggested that the wine had belonged to Thomas Jefferson, and that the bottle at auction could “rightly be considered one of the world’s greatest rarities.” The level of the wine was “exceptionally high” for such an old bottle—just half an inch below the cork—and the color “remarkably deep for its age.” The wine’s value was listed as “inestimable.” Before auctioning the wine, Michael Broadbent, the head of Christie’s wine department, consulted with the auction house’s glass experts, who confirmed that both the bottle and the engraving were

in the eighteenth-century French style. Jefferson had served as America’s Minister to France between 1785 and the outbreak of the French Revolution, and had developed a fascination with French wine. Upon his return to America, he continued to order large quantities of Bordeaux for himself and for George Washington, and stipulated in one 1790 letter that their respective shipments should be marked with their initials. During his first term as President, Jefferson spent seventy-five hundred dollars—roughly a hundred and twenty thousand dollars in today’s currency— on wine, and he is generally regarded as America’s first great wine connoisseur. (He may also have been America’s first great wine bore. “There was, as usual, a dissertation upon wines,” John Quincy Adams noted in his diary after dining with Jefferson in 1807. “Not very edifying.”) At two-thirty that December afternoon, bidding opened at ten thousand pounds. Less than two minutes later, the gavel fell. The winning bidder was Christopher Forbes, the son of Malcolm Forbes and a vice-president of the magazine Forbes.

The final price was a hundred and five thousand pounds—about a hundred and fifty-seven thousand dollars. “It’s more fun than the opera glasses Lincoln was holding when he was shot,” Forbes declared, adding, “And we have those, too.” I distinctly remember flying home from that trip, almost 10 years ago. There was a quiet man sitting next to me who sparked up a conversation. I remember how this soft-spoken gentleman began telling me about his long trip home from Mozambique. He had just spent two weeks away from his family (wife and three small children) on a mission trip to help poor, starving families in a remote village on the eastern coast of Africa. Not a sign of bitterness in his kind eyes. He was and still is a reminder that there is always something bigger than you. Don’t be a bitter bidder. Carpe Vino! A Guide to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

From diagnosis to symptoms and treatment BY SHANNA KONZ, CNP, SANFORD HEALTH FERTILITY & REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE

I

nfertility is a difficult reality many families experience. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 10 percent of reproductive aged women in the United States have difficulty getting or staying pregnant. So although we may be unaware of who in our life is affected, each of us knows someone struggling with infertility issues. In women, the leading cause of infertility is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a complex hormone disorder affecting an estimated five to 15 percent of reproductive aged women. Though misleadingly associated with ovarian cysts, cysts do not need to be present for a woman to have PCOS. Instead, a woman must experience two of the following to be diagnosed:

56 mind-body-spirit |

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

• Irregular or missed menstrual periods • Elevated androgen (male hormone) levels • Polycystic appearing ovaries on an ultrasound (greater than twelve 2-8 mm follicles per ovary) PCOS is responsible for a number of symptoms that can affect the body including obesity, weight gain, insulin resistance, infertility, acne and increased hair growth in areas such as the face, abdomen and inner thigh. PCOS may also be accompanied by obstructive sleep apnea and mood disorders. On-set of symptoms starts sometime after puberty, ranging from the later teenage years to early adulthood. Frequently, PCOS

PCOS is responsible for a number of symptoms that can affect the body including obesity, weight gain, insulin resistance, infertility, acne and increased hair growth in areas such as the face, abdomen and inner thigh.

goes undiagnosed because symptoms are associated with other diseases or conditions, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The cause of PCOS is unknown; however, several factors may play a role in the development of PCOS including genetics and family history. Often, the ovaries of women with PCOS are producing more androgen than normal. Though androgen are considered male hormone, women produce androgen, just at a much lower level than men. When a woman has elevated androgen levels, the development of her eggs and the release of her eggs, also called ovulation, are affected. Women with PCOS often experience anovulation, an egg not releasing from the ovary, as a result and must seek fertility care. Though issues with chronic anovulation are significant, the implications of PCOS expand far beyond fertility. If left untreated, women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing uterine cancer, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to help control the symptoms and prevent long-term problems.

A thorough personal and medical history and examination are completed as well as lab work to identify PCOS and guide treatment options. Because the cause is not well defined and the symptoms can vary from woman to woman, treatment of PCOS is dependent on a woman’s symptoms and goals. Lifestyle modification and weight loss remain the main forms of treatment. In fact, a five percent total weight loss may help a woman restore normal menstrual cycles and improve hormonal balance. Sanford Health Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Clinic offers hope through a multidisciplinary clinic specifically for women with PCOS. Whether attempting to get pregnant or not, our team of reproductive endocrinologists, dermatologists, genetic counselors, behavioral health counselors, dietitians and health coaches will address every aspect of how PCOS may be affecting a woman’s life. We individualize care in order to alleviate symptoms and find solutions specific to each women’s needs and pregnancy goals. To schedule an appointment, call (605) 328-8800.

T

he days are longer. The sun is shining. It really is happening. Golf season is about to begin. Golf is played by millions of people around the world. While it isn’t as obviously physically intensive as other forms of exercise, it still has a role as a healthy exercise. So before we start to bemoan the agonizing stories of golf… I’ve been told it’s the adult version of an Easter egg hunt... Let’s look at 3 benefits golf has on your health:

1. Cardiovascular System

Try Golf Medicine at OI

Golf actually provides enough stimuli to improve your aerobic fitness. Playing golf can decrease your risk for cardiovascular disease and help your blood lipid and glucose levels. It could also be an acceptable exercise for people in cardiac and stroke rehab. So the next time you’re enjoying yourself out on the green, remember you’re doing something good for your heart as well.

Like any sport, people can receive injuries while golfing. Poor swing mechanics can lead to injury, and leaving skin exposed to the sun for long periods of time without sunscreen can increase the risk of skin cancer. Orthopedic Institute offers programs to improve your strength, stability and mobility on the course. The programs are led by a Titleist Performance Institute, Medical Level 2 Certified Physical Therapist (PT). This PT specializes in golf rehabilitation and sports medicine.

2. Respiratory Health On average, most golfers walk five miles during an 18-hole round. That’s a lot of activity! Getting out and walking the course regularly can also help strengthen lung function and keep your respiratory system healthy throughout late adulthood.

3. Mental Well-being As you might have experienced for yourself at one point, the golf course is a common site for business meetings, charity events and other social gatherings. These opportunities can help people build social connections and confidence. A study found that people’s senses of self-worth were positively impacted after taking part in a golf outing. Getting out in the fresh air and sunlight and walking on a manicured golf course were noted as contributing factors to the mental-wellness boost.

ituated along the Brazos River and I-35 is the beautiful town of Waco, Texas. About halfway between the cities of Dallas and Austin, Waco was built around the Waco Suspension Bridge, which was completed in 1870 and is a legendary icon of the downtown area. The bridge is the highlight of many festivals and events that take place in Waco. Next to the bridge are the impressive Chisholm Trail “Branding the Brazos” sculptures, along with other art pieces and monuments that tower over the nearby Indian Spring Park on the west end and the Martin Luther Kind Jr. Park on the east. A seven-mile -long scenic riverwalk winds under the bridge on both sides of the Brazos River, stretching from the Baylor Campus to Cameron Park Zoo. Located at Baylor University is the Mayborn Museum Complex, which features hands-on discovery rooms and interactive natural science and cultural history galleries, all in one location. The Natural Science and Cultural History museum focuses on Central Texas, with interactive dioramas and exploration stations. In addition to these exciting exhibits, there are two entire floors consisting of discovery rooms which are themed with hands-on learning for all ages and designed to educate and inspire young imaginations. The museum’s newest exhibit space is called the Design Den, which is focused on creativity and technology. Also included in the Mayborn Museum Complex is an outdoor historic village, located on the banks of the Brazos River. Donated to Baylor University in 1985 by the Governor Bill and Vara Daniel family, the historic village structures consist of nine wood-frame buildings providing a glimpse into a past community of the 1890s. Another museum located downtown Waco is the Dr. Pepper Museum. The nation’s oldest major soft drink was invented in Waco, so this museum is dedicated entirely to the delicious beverage. Three floors featuring exhibits with soft drink memorabilia and educational tours about the history of beverage bottling and where it is now,

a liquid laboratory, a soda fountain offering Dr. Pepper floats, and a gift shop make up the inside of the Dr. Pepper Museum. Outside there are plenty of photo opportunities, including a green Dr. Pepper delivery truck from the 1940s, a hand-painted original advertising sign, and one of three original neon signs from the Mockingbird Plant in Dallas. Located just a couple of blocks away from the Dr. Pepper Museum is the famous Magnolia Market at the Silos, owned by HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines. The Silos District Trolley makes it easy to get there from the main downtown streets and restaurants, and it’s definitely an attraction you won’t want to overlook. There is something for everyone at Magnolia Market, with shopping, food, games, and a garden. The big green lawn in the center of the property makes it more than just a place to shop, but also a place to enjoy some quality time with friends and family. You will find people playing corn hole, throwing footballs, and having potato sack races while others are enjoying the delicious bites to eat from various food trucks. Independent operators sell meals, snacks, coffee, and more from the food truck park. There are also plenty of treats to choose from at the Silos Baking Co. Airstream, an on-site bakery filled with Joanna’s personal recipes and hand-picked favorites. The garden is a space to explore and learn all about gardening, along with the Magnolia Seed and Supply shop which offers tools, kits, and planting essentials. Another unique shopping opportunity is at the nearby Spice Village. Located in the downtown historic Waco Hardware building and with more than 90 various shops under one roof, everyone can find something here. From home decor, vintage finds, apparel, and accessories, Spice Village has been a dream shopping experience since 1997. Built in 1908, the 30,000 square foot landmark still possesses the signature long-leaf pine beams, which separate each of the shops. Next to downtown is Cameron Park, where Waco celebrates life. a National Recreation Trail system, two rivers, magnificent cliffs and trees, this 400-acre park is constantly busy with festivals, parties, and sports. There are many outdoor activities available here, such as hiking, biking, fishing, and more. For more than 100 years, visitors have enjoyed the amazing view from the Cameron Park cliffs and learned about the Legend of Lovers Leap. There are two pavilions, an overlook plaza, countryside views, and three giant playgrounds for the kids to enjoy. Connecting to the park is Cameron Park Zoo, which rests on 52 acres full of lush vegetation, pretty waterfalls, and beautiful lakes and ponds. More than 1,731 animals are housed here, representing 300 species. Visitors enjoy exhibits such as Gibbon Island, the Bald Eagle Habitat, the Herpetarium, and many more. See the Galapagos Tortoises, or watch the Squirrel Monkeys and King Vultures at the South American Exhibit. Enter the ship and discover The Brazos River Country, with a 50,000 gallon saltwater aquarium and animals such as the American Black Bear and the Cougar. Find Elephants and Lions as you journey through the Savanna, and see critically endangered Orangutans and Komodo Dragons in the Asian Forest exhibit. Take a rest at the playground area, Grammy Nell’s, and let your kids have some fun in the splash area. Located just east of I-35 and south of the Brazos River is the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum. This official museum celebrates the famed Texas Rangers law enforcement agency and features displays dedicated to its almost 200 year history. There is an extensive collection of ranger artifacts, historic weapons, and exhibits on the American West, law enforcement, Southern Plains Indian history and ethnography, and firearms technology. There is also a section about rangers in the movies and on television, including Walker Texas Ranger and Lone Ranger. Another site worth visiting is the Waco Mammoth National Monument. This paleontological site and museum offers tours of a dig where the fossils of 24 Columbian mammoths and other mammals have been uncovered. The site is the largest known concentration of a single herd of mammoths that died from the same event, which is believed to be a flash flood that happened about 67,000 years ago.

Babies and Sleep: SAFETY IS PRIORITY BY AVERA HEALTH

A

good night’s sleep is an elusive dream for parents of newborn babies, but that goes with the territory. All parents – and the doctors who provide both them and their little ones care – know the sacrifice is worth it, as long as babies have a safe night’s sleep. New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended a few important considerations for new moms and dads. Kara Bruning, MD, Avera Medical Group pediatrician, said the crucial things that can help keep babies

safe remain the same. “Moms and dads should put babies in their sleeping space on their back with nothing in that sleeping space whatsoever,” said Bruning. “I also tell parents no when it comes to cosleeping. It’s dangerous. You should never have a baby sleeping in your bed.” The changes in the guidelines from the AAP are meant to address sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS, which presents the greatest risk to children in their first six months of life. Almost 3,500 infants are lost each year due to SIDS. Bruning said

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

the newest recommendation from the AAP encourages you, as a new mom or dad, to keep baby’s crib/sleeping environment in the parents’ room. Bruning said she understands why this idea is presented. “I feel the primary focus should be on the sleeping space, which should be free of pillows, blankets and stuffed toys, as well as any pads or crib bumpers. Cosleeping or bed sharing with an infant, as I mentioned, is really dangerous, and this guideline makes sense,” she said. “If the crib is nearby, it may lessen the frequency

Moms and dads should put babies in their sleeping space on their back with nothing in that sleeping space whatsoever.

of parents making that mistake and letting baby sleep in their bed. Just get up and put baby on his or her back in the crib in your room.” Baby mattresses should not compress at all, Bruning added. Even one that allows for a centimeter of give could be enough to present a serious airway blockage for a sleeping infant. A firm, toys-and-blanketfree space is the safest sleep space for your baby. You can get a head start before baby comes: shop with care for this important space in your new child’s life.

“Many of the new cribs and other sleeping spaces are applying the guidelines properly, but sometimes you’ll see an older ‘Pack ‘n Play’ or similar device on a rummage sale or classified ad,” Bruning said. “Before you buy it, make sure its mattress is firm. Saving a few dollars with an unsafe playpen is a bad choice.” Bruning also reminds new moms and dads to avoid letting children sleep on couches or other soft surfaces, to avoid letting them sleep in their car seats (once home) or in “rocking” style child seats.

Avoid squishy mattresses and clutter in the sleep space, put them on their backs and never share a bed with infants: all of these will make your baby safer. “As doctors, moms and dads, if we can apply these guidelines every time we have the chance, we can reduce infant deaths,” Bruning said. “The lack of sleep and the joy and anxiety that come with being a new parent can be a challenge – but applying the rules every time can reduce that worry and achieve the most important bottom line: safer babies.”

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE WONDERFUL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN WE HAVE COME ACROSS THIS MONTH. WE HOPE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE AND ALSO INTRODUCE OTHERS BEING RELEASED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ENJOY. Great, Now We’ve Got Barbarians! by Jason Carter Eaton Playing and having fun is a kid’s job, right? Cleaning up is a parent’s job, right? Why do grown-ups make such a fuss about tidiness and cleanliness, anyway? What’s the worst that could happen? A couple of ants pass through? A lone little mouse pays a midnight call? No big deal, right? Right? Author Jason Carter Eaton and illustrator Mark Fearing are here to caution you that being a slob might in fact be a big deal—a really big deal. Maybe even a BARBARIAN-size deal! This outrageously absurd cautionary tale might just make you think twice about the cupcake crumbs in your bed and the half-eaten cheese curls behind the sofa. After all, you could end up with an infestation of barbaric proportions! Ages 4 yrs - 8 yrs candlewickpress.com

Where Are You Going, Baby Lincoln? Tales from Deckawoo Drive, Volume Three by Kate DiCamillo Baby Lincoln’s older sister, Eugenia, is very fond of telling Baby what to do, and Baby usually responds by saying “Yes, Sister.” But one day Baby has had enough. She decides to depart on a Necessary Journey, even though she has never gone anywhere without Eugenia telling her what to take and where to go. And in fact Baby doesn’t know where she is headed — only that she was entirely happy in the previous night’s dream, sitting aboard a train with a view of shooting stars. Who might Baby meet as she strikes out on her own, and what could she discover about herself? Will her impulsive adventure take her away from Eugenia for good? What if timid Baby Lincoln broke free of her bossy sister and set off on an unexpected journey? Kate DiCamillo presents a touching new adventure set in Mercy Watson’s world. How to Track a Truck by Jason Carter Eaton Want a pet truck? Rumble up to this handy guidebook offering everything you need to know. Bone up on habitat: monster trucks like abandoned parking lots; moving trucks live in busy neighborhoods; ice-cream trucks and snowplows migrate in the winter. Pick the right breed for your home (a car transporter in a small apartment would not be a wise choice). Learn to identify your truck by its tire tracks, and soon, with the lure of some orange cones, you’ll have a loyal vehicle following you home, a happy hum under its hood. With an eighteen-wheelersize nod to pet-care guides, Jason Carter Eaton and John Rocco put young readers in the driver’s seat for a road trip to truck-dreamer bliss. For kids who love trucks, here comes the definitive guide to catching and taming one of your own from the creators of the hit picture book How to Train a Train. Why is it so important to learn a language that makes so little sense? Patrick and the President by Ryan Tubridy When the beloved president visited Ireland in 1963, he described it as the best four days of his life. And for a generation of Irish people, it was a trip they never forgot. This warmly told, bighearted picture book captures the fevered excitement in the buildup to the president’s visit, all seen through the eyes of a young boy named Patrick who wants to know more than anything what it would feel like to shake the president’s hand. Rooted in historical fact and marking the centennial of John F. Kennedy’s birth, this feast of a book offers readers a pure and personal take on JFK’s visit to County Wexford, Ireland. Included in the back matter is a time line that helps amplify the story. Ages 6 yrs - 9 yrs candlewickpress.com

POISON PREVENTION March is Poison Prevention Month, the third week in March has been observed as National Animal Poison Prevention Week. This is a great time to educate ourselves on how to keep our pets safe from potentially harmful materials that can be found right inside our own homes.

Here are a few things you don’t want your pet eating: • Apple Seeds • Apricot pits • Cherry pits • Chocolate • Grapes • Macadamia Nuts • Onions

• Potato Leaves and stems • Raisins • Tea • Walnuts • Tomato Leaves and Stems • Yeast Dough • Potpourri

• Rodenticides • Plant Fertilizer • Antifreeze • Insecticides • Certain Mulches • Candy containing the sweetener Xylitol

Curiosity really can kill the cat – or dog, if we aren’t careful! Keep your pet safe!”

Say

YES to Fun

and So Much More! MARY ADRIAN

E

veryone knows that summer camps can be great for school-age kids and their families. Camp gives kids the opportunity to make friends, learn new skills, have adventures, and get some exercise. It cuts down on screen time by getting them outdoors and encouraging active play. It also helps working parents who need childcare during the summer months. Here are some of the added benefits of signing your kids up for camp — whether it be for just a few hours or an entire week.

1

Make New Friends Camp is the place for kids to make new friends. Free from the social expectations pressuring them at school, camp encourages kids to relax and make friends easily. All the fun at camp draws everyone together singing, laughing, talking, playing, doing almost everything together. Everyday, camp creates friendships.

2

Reconnect With Nature Camp is a wonderful antidote to “nature deficit order” to narrow the experience of modern indoor life. Outdoor experience enriches kid’s perception of the world and supports healthy child development.

etc. for her | March 2017 79

3 4

Acquire Social Skills Coming to camp means joining a close-knit community where everyone agrees to cooperate and respect each other.

Have Free Time for Unstructured Play Free from the overly-structured, overly-scheduled routines of home and school, life at camp gives children much needed free time to just play — or dive into a subject that really interests them.

7

80 friends & family |

5

Grow More Independent Camp can be the perfect place for kids to practice making decisions for themselves without parents and teachers guiding every move. Camp helps kids develop who they are.

6

Unplug From Technology When kids take a break from TV, cell phones and the Internet, they re-discover their creative powers and engage with real people, real activities and real emotions. They realize, there’s always plenty to do.

CAMPS

Develop Life-Long Skills A camp provides the right instruction, equipment and facilities for kids to enhance their sports abilities, their artistic talents and their adventure skills. The variety of activities offered at camp, makes it easy for kids to discover and develop what they like to do.

8 9

Gain Resiliency The kind of encouragement and nurture kids receive at camp makes it a great environment to endure setbacks, try new (and thereby maybe a little frightening) things, and see that improvement comes when you give something another try. Camp helps conquer fears.

Experience Success & Become More Confident Camp helps children build self-confidence and self-esteem by removing the kind of academic, athletic and social competition that shapes their lives at school. With its non-competitive activities and diverse opportunities to succeed, camp can be a real boost for young people. Camp teaches kids a “can-do” attitude.
