“My favorite joints are in Texas,” says Bob, “so I knew I wanted to bring those flavors back home to South Dakota.”
ob Brenner has been grilling and smoking meats for years. He says the interest dates even back to boy scout days and cooking over a fire. As an adult, he knew he was on to something that could take him beyond the backyard barbecue, when he would host parties and all the meat he was serving would be gone within minutes...and he would have to cut more to share with guests. Fast forward to 2015 when Bob and Nichole Brenner started Big Rig BBQ in a seasonal location on Louise Avenue in front of The Home Depot, which also expanded to include a food truck - or rather, a trailer Bob built using his construction experience. The business name comes from another of Bob’s previous experiences – driving big rig semi-trucks. During his travels, which he commemorated by hanging the states’ license plates on the walls of the restaurant, he has had the opportunity to taste BBQ from all over the country. “My favorite joints are in Texas,” says Bob, “so I knew I wanted to bring those flavors back home to South Dakota.” According to Bob, what sets Texas-style BBQ apart from others is that it takes time and a real wood smoker. “We use real oak wood added to the smoker every 30-45 minutes when we are smoking our meats,” he explains. “It’s a lot of work as any real-wood pit master will agree, but that time and energy is what makes our meats taste as good as they do. Our BBQ is always fresh.” Having a year-round, sit-down location has been the Brenners’ goal since day one. Now, that dream is a reality with the opening of their restaurant on the corner of 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue with seating for 46 people. And, appropriately enough, the seating comes in the form of picnic tables. In the short time that Big Rig BBQ has been open, they have been recognized locally, statewide, and at the national level. The Brenners say customers come in saying they found Big Rig BBQ mentioned in an AARP magazine, and the couple didn’t even know about that article. Perhaps the most notable honor so far is The Travel Channel naming

them the Best BBQ in South Dakota as part of their “50 States of BBQ” listing. Every day, Big Rig BBQ is serving up fresh smoked meats, including brisket, pulled pork, ribs and chicken. Along with their meats, which are served by the half pound, they offer pulled pork and pulled brisket sandwiches. You can swing by Big Rig weekdays from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for their daily lunch buffet, and on Fridays and Saturdays after 5 p.m., they add prime rib to the menu. Bob says they serve their meats with a recommendation of “sauce optional” because of their flavor and juiciness. “While we do make our own sauces, we recommend that our customers try our menu items without sauce first, just to see how our meats’ flavors really stand on their own, like great BBQ should.” Everything you find at Big Rig is made from scratch, from the potato salad and coleslaw to their beans and cornbread. You have to be sure to stop at Big Rig BBQ regularly, or at least follow their social media pages, so you can keep up with the sweet treats Nichole may have made for the day. Bob, Nichole and their team love helping with events, both big and small. For larger events where they have staff on hand to serve, they can prepare sliced brisket, sausage, turkey, pork loin, ham or pulled pork, pork ribs and beef ribs. Side dishes include potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, beans, sweet creamed corn or cornbread. Groups with smaller gatherings can preorder food with at least two days’ notice (more notice is better); however, there is a threeto five-pound minimum for preorders, depending on the meats you are ordering. Big Rig’s catering services, which can be customized to meet the needs of any group, has garnered some big attention, too. Earlier this year, they were thrilled to cater for country superstar Eric Church and his crew. It has been a busy couple of years for the Brenners, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We love sharing our food, and we love meeting people, whether at events or at our new location,” says Bob. “We even have customers stopping by now to drop off their own license plates to add to the collection on our walls. It’s awesome!” Big Rig BBQ opens Mondays through Saturdays at 11 a.m. Their closing times are at “8-ish” on weeknights and “9-ish” on Fridays and Saturdays. They close earlier if they have sold out for the day, so get there early!

t just takes one thought to make a difference. Simon Says Give is a nonprofit organization started in Eagan, Minnesota by a girl named Mandi Simon. Mandi was just eight years old when she had the idea to start “Simon Says Give.” The Simon Says Give organization originally started to make sure every kid had a birthday party. Simon Says Give now has three chapters, and has impacted over 60,000 kids in need. Our organization is run BY kids FOR kids. With the help of our adult board, our Kids Advisory Board meets every month to discuss future fundraisers that will help the kids in our community and work with our mentors to build our own leadership skills. Simon Says Give focuses on four areas: birthday parties, school supplies, kids’ leadership and a “passion project.” The “passion project” means that each chapter chooses a different project they want to do to help the kids in their local communities. Our Sioux Falls chapter’s passion project is fighting hunger specifically for kids in our community.
FIGHTING HUNGER One of our ideas for fighting hunger in Sioux Falls was developing our “Make a Meal, Take a Meal” program. “Make a

Meal, Take a Meal” is a program where kids learn to make healthy meals and are provided with the ingredients for a second. The kids can take home the ingredients given to them and prepare the second meal for their family. We also started an event called “Kids vs. Cops,” where our local law enforcement and our kids come together for a food fundraiser. Our kid’s board members want to make sure no kid is hungry.
with SOS, and we like to help with this as much as we can. We collect school supplies from different places and deliver them to The Banquet. “High Five for Supplies” is what our Minnesota chapter does. In Minnesota, they do a huge event each August. Their goal is to pack about 10,000 back packs this year, and they try to help as many kids in their area as they can. We all hope to make sure each kid has a great school year.
CELEBRATING KIDS
BEING LEADERS
We also want to make sure every kid is celebrated on their birthday. As of April 2017, we have provided over 112 birthdays for kids in the Sioux Falls area. In our birthday bags, we provide decorations, invitations, cake, and even our own birthday cards that the kid board makes. Not only do we provide birthday items, we also give a “gift of need” and a “gift of fun.” The “gift of need” supplies various items like socks, pajamas, and toiletries. The “gift of fun” supplies toys, games, and books. We try to fill these gifts with things that the child is interested in, and that they will enjoy.
Kids like us have BIG ideas and through our Kids Advisory Board program we help make them happen. Whether it is holding a lemonade stand to raise money for summer camps or sending school supplies to Africa, our kids work with adult mentors to make their ideas a reality. Our Kids Advisory Board works with adult mentors to discuss other program ideas and do activities like learning how to write a resume, how to fundraise, and how to write a ‘thank you’ letter.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES The Banquet has an amazing program
BIG IDEAS As a group, all of our chapters have a BIG goal. We want to impact 2 million kids by the year 2022. As of right now 60,000 kids have been helped. Our
fundraisers and donations stay local and they stay with the kids and organizations in our communities. We have been helped by many businesses and organizations in our communities to build our chapter and its programs. We are very thankful for their support and are working hard to continue our programs to make other kids happy. Wondering what you can do? Consider donating, volunteering, spreading the word or simply do one kind thing today for someone else. With just one small act of kindness or one small thought you can make a difference.
Visit our Facebook page @SSGFSD or www.simonsaysgive.org for more information. This article was written by Mara McElroy, an 8th grade student at Harrisburg North Middle School and a kid’s advisory board member. Mara’s mother serves on the adult board and her younger sister Brenna is a kid’s advisory board member and focuses her volunteer time specifically on helping kids have a special birthday.

ark Weber had experienced smalltown living and downtown loft living before embarking on a housebuilding journey ten years ago. A new development was in the works at the southern edge of Sioux Falls, and he picked his lot as soon as it was available. One of the things he knew he wanted was a backyard with some privacy. “The thing that was great about this site was the deep lot,” Weber says. “There were existing acreages behind us, so I knew those would remain there for quite some time and create a nice, private backyard for me and my daughters.” At the time, the girls were just six and three, and Weber was looking to build a home they could grow up in as they progressed through school in the Harrisburg district. “I wanted to be sure we could stay in one place for them without feeling like we needed to either upsize or downsize,” he says. Until last spring, the house had remained in its original state with what Weber calls a “traditional” style of décor. Deciding it was time for some updates, the Webers started a remodeling project. One of the more substantial projects was converting the previous covered deck into an office for Mark, who works from home, and building a new covered deck onto the back of the house. The house was originally decorated with earth tones throughout, but with the remodel, Weber introduced more greys into the color scheme. He says that while using grey may seem rather trendy, it fit well with the darker woods and provided a more updated feel.

The upper level’s open floor plan is perfect for days when the girls have friends over or when the family is hosting neighbors. The Brazilian Walnut floors and dark brown cabinets give the space a warm feel. He says he was lucky to have a friend in the cabinet business, so the two hung all the kitchen cabinets themselves. “Having friends in the building industry really made it fun,” he

says. One thing Weber learned during the home-building process is how long some decisions actually took to make. He said he “spent hours” looking online and in stores for lighting fixtures. “I looked for a dining room table for about three years,” he says, “and finally found what I wanted, which was a table that

younger daughter’s first hunting adventure and flushing out that bird herself. Weber enjoys taking long trips on his motorcycle, but when it’s time for a family getaway, they are likely to head out to the Black Hills. The living room almost feels like a cabin in the Hills, with the warm wood trim in the coffered ceiling and the stacked stone on the fireplace, which was added during last year’s remodeling project. Stretched out on the creme-colored fur rug is the spot you can usually find the family’s dog, Jax. A focal point is the unique coffee table made in Steen, Minnesota, from a Sugar Maple. As soon as Weber saw it, he knew it was the perfect piece for the room. “The mill in Steen takes a Sugar Maple, slices it, then lets it sit out,” Weber explains. “As that sugar starts to rot, it changes in color, and then they harden and seal it for a table top.” During one of their trips, the family found some birch branches and brought them home. Weber incorporated them into the décor of the master suite upstairs,

which also includes a walk-in closet and large master bath with a double vanity and sunken tub. A guest room showcases more of Weber’s motorcycle hobby with a “Sturgis or Bust” sign, a wall hanging proclaiming that “life needs more motorcycling” and two shadow boxes that contain tiny replicas of Harley Davidson gas tank designs from across the years. The main level laundry is a nice convenience for the busy family, which also gets quite a bit of use from the oversized framed bulletin board for various notes and reminders. Prints of inspirational quotes hang in each bathroom, and Weber says those are all meaningful to him and his daughters. Both girls, now 16 and 13, have rooms in the lower level and, Weber says, those rooms have been several different colors over the years. “They’ve had everything from paper lanterns on the ceilings to boy band posters on the wall,” he laughs. Now, the two rooms feature a pretty grey palette with accent colors like yellow and teal. The large family room in the lower level is another favorite gathering space, and there have been many times, Weber says, that all of the furniture has been moved to make space for blankets and pillows when his daughters have friends over. The drywall shelves are a feature of the room that Weber had a direct hand in designing. While ten years have gone by quickly, Weber says he is so grateful they found this spot to build on and to become part of a close neighborhood. “We are so lucky,” he says. “Right here in the neighborhood are so many families who are also friends. We find just about any occasion to entertain and spend time together.”

MAN IN THE KITCHEN
At age 50,
you’re still a hot date...
T
he first weekend in May always means two things to me; SculptureWalk will unveil another season of artwork in downtown Sioux Falls, and it’s the first Saturday morning when the farmers markets open here in our fair city. There are several farmers markets in Sioux Falls now – on the south end of town near Prairie Green Golf Course, at the Western Mall and a couple located downtown. The granddaddy of them all is the Falls Park Farmers Market. The market at Falls Park has been bringing fresh produce to Sioux Falls from surrounding farms for more than 100 years. Started in 1912, the market now fills the open-air shelter at Falls Park. Frankly, to say it fills the shelter is an understatement. The market now spills out into the parking lot, under tents and out of trucks and trailers; more than two dozen vendors bring a wide variety of goods each week. What started as just fresh produce has grown to include hand-made pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven on site, fresh pastas, handmade soap, local cheese, jams and jellies and a broad assortment of baked goods. The bakeries bring fresh breads, sweets and even gluten-free treats. Beyond that, the market brings bison, beef, lamb, poultry and pork. You can even get freshly roasted coffee and specialty drinks. I’m a huge fan of farmers markets. When my beloved and I travel, we often seek out farmers markets on Saturday mornings. They are a great place to find fresh baked treats and interesting fruits and vegetables that we don’t normally find here at home. One morning at a farmers market in New Orleans, we found coolers filled with beautiful shrimp the family had caught the afternoon before. Packed with ice, each cooler had shrimp separated by size, the smallest of which were as large as

any we see at supermarkets here at home, and the price was far better than we would dream of in Sioux Falls. The only problem was we were staying in hotel and had nowhere to cook them, so we couldn’t buy any, but we sampled fresh satsumas from other vendors and chatted with the woman selling home grown tomatoes, peppers, onions, celery and okra. We brought home a reusable shopping bag, a jar of pepper jelly and a bunch of great memories. We frequently visit the farmers market on Court Avenue in Des Moines. We’ve sampled cheeses at the Dane County Farmers Market in Madison, Wisconsin, and grabbed breakfast and enjoyed the people-watching at the Green City Market in Chicago. We’ve found that markets are a great way to get to know the residents and the local food culture in the places we

visit. These markets expand our ideas of the cities and show us the diversity and beauty that comes out when people share food. It’s that chance to meet people and share the common language of food that really makes farmers markets great. Unlike a visit to the mega-mart, farmers markets give us a chance to directly talk to the people who raise the food. When you start to build relationships with them, you can see how much they care about the food they grow. Those relationships give us the chance to learn about different varieties and appreciate the subtle changes in foods as the seasons evolve. There’s a young man named Chase Jensen who runs a stand at the Falls Park market, and every year I’ll start the season buying asparagus and end the year purchasing melons from him. He and I will often have
conversations about the sweet corn or melon I purchased the last week, and he’ll recommend a new variety that has just come into season. I know I can count on Chase to bring me the best his farm has to offer, and he knows he can expect honest feedback about his goods from me. That is the kind of magic that just doesn’t happen at the grocery store. And that’s the kind of experience that keeps me heading to market, to market. And then home again, home again, jiggety-jig. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today! When he’s not seeking out fresh goodies at the market, Jim’s bringing fresh ideas to his clients at ADwërks, an advertising and marketing agency, just a block away from Falls Park.

Mothering Wine BY RICCARDO TARABELSI
H
appy Mother’s Day to all of you Moms out there! My wish for you is that you are appreciated by your loved ones. Whether it’s a homemade card, the kind that has more glue than sparkles, from your Kindergartner, or a mouse pad with your four kids on it, there’s nothing like getting something from the people to whom you give everything. Every year, I take our three boys to Color Me Mine, and we create a unique piece of pottery with their handprints on it. My wife has everything
from a cookie jar to a serving platter to a piggy bank on which she can see our kids’ hands grow year after year… My wife has trained me well! Thank you to Marybeth, and all Moms, for giving unconditionally. When it comes to wine, there’s a certain amount of “mothering” that is involved, especially if you’re a collector of fine wines. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is how to know what wines are worth aging and how do you store or “mother” these

wines. Well, here is a rough guideline for determining which wines you come across are in need of a good guardian. Please keep in mind that this is a very rough guide to aging wines. There are so many variables that it is always wise to consult the wine store, wine representative, or broker from whom you are purchasing the wine. The ratio of sugars, acids, and phenolics to water is a key factor of how well a wine can age. The less water in the grapes prior to harvest, the more likely the resulting wine will have some aging potential. Grape variety, climate, vintage, and viticultural practice are all important. Here’s a good rule of thumb: Grape varieties with thicker skins, from a dry growing season where little irrigation was used, and yields were kept low will have less water and a higher ratio of sugar, acids, and phenolics. These make fantastic wines to “adopt” into your wine cellar. When it comes to mothering your wines, storage conditions can influence a wine’s aging ability dramatically. Vibrations and heat fluctuations can hasten a wine’s

deterioration and cause an adverse effect on the wines. In general, a wine has a greater potential to develop complexity and more aromatic bouquet if it is allowed to age slowly in a relatively cool environment. The lower the temperature, the more slowly a wine develops. On average, the rate of chemical reactions in wine double with each 18°F increase in temperature. Wine expert Karen MacNeil, recommends keeping wine intended for aging in a cool area with a constant temperature around 55°F. Wine can be stored at temperatures as high as 69°F without long term negative effect. However, most experts believe that extreme temperature fluctuations (such as repeated transferring of a wine from a warm room to a cool refrigerator) would be detrimental to the wine. The ultra-violet rays of direct sunlight should also be avoided because of the free radicals that can develop in the wine and result in oxidation. Wines packaged in large format bottles, such as magnums and 3 liter Jeroboams, seem to age more slowly than wines packaged in regular 750 ml bottles or half bottles. This may be because of the greater proportion of oxygen exposed to the wine during the bottling process. The advent of alternative wine closures to cork, such as Stelvin closures (screw caps) and synthetic corks has opened up recent discussions on the aging potential of wines sealed with these alternative closures. Currently there are no conclusive results, and the topic is the subject of ongoing research. And since we’re on the topic of mothers, there are probably some mothers-to-be out there who are taking a 9-month sabbatical from
drinking wine. Their palate no longer enjoys a glass of Pinot Noir with dinner, instead it has been replaced with morning sickness and heart burn. Wine goes through this stage too! Known as bottle sickness or “bottle-shock,” one of the short-term aging needs of wine is a period where the wine is considered “sick” due to the trauma and volatility of the bottling experience. During bottling, some oxygen is exposed to the wine, causing a domino effect of chemical reaction with various components of the wine. The time it takes for the wine to settle down and have the oxygen fully dissolve and integrate with the wine is considered its period of “bottle shock”. If you haven’t seen the movie Bottle Shock, you’re missing out on a great movie all about Chateau Montelena making history for Napa Valley wines. It’s never too late to start a wine collection… all it takes is one good bottle. Here’s a quick tip on how to get started: buy a Chianti Classico Riserva (at least $20-$25) or find a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley (2012-2014 vintages have great ratings.) Get one. Get two! My first was a 1997 Barbaresco; what’s yours going to be? Carpe Vino! Riccardo will spend Mother’s Day with his wife, Marybeth, and their three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon. few minutes may be all that’s separating you from actionable information regarding your potential breast cancer risk. And, as breast screening methods get more and more advanced, your access to this information gets more and more convenient. Sanford Health is the first clinical partner with the Athena Breast Health Network — an initiative by the University of California medical centers to integrate clinical care and research to drive quality improvements and develop new standards of breast health. Women scheduling screening mammograms at Sanford and who have an email address on file receive an electronic invitation to a questionnaire. Answering the questions takes five to 15 minutes and can identify women who may be at elevated risk for breast cancer. Sanford certified genetic counselor Larissa Risty, MS, project manager for the Edith Sanford Athena Breast Health Program, says that the accessibility provided by the Athena network stands out. “Patients answer questions on their device, on their schedule,” she explains. “Breast health specialists will actively reach out to the women who may be at increased risk for breast cancer.”
Date: Saturday, May 13th, 2017 Time: 8:00AM – 12:00PM Location: Orthopedic Institute 810 East 23rd St. (4th floor) Sioux Falls, SD 57105 Appointment Line: 612.596.6105 or 888.293.2832
There is no fee for patients to consult with the Athena breast health specialist. After completing the questionnaire, patients receive a letter outlining the portions that indicate higher risk. A breast health specialist then follows up with a phone call to discuss resources available to assess the risk factors. Some risk factors, Risty says, can be lifestyle-related, like smoking or elevated BMI. In these cases, providers can suggest tobacco cessation or exercise and nutrition programs that can help decrease risk. Other risk factors may necessitate referrals to local breast clinics or genetic counselors. “At the breast clinic or with the genetic counselor, a more detailed risk assessment can take place and an individualized screening plan, based on your own risk, can be created,” Risty says. Sanford partnered with Athena network in December of 2014 and just two years later had its 15,000th patient-completed questionnaire. Athena has an initial network-wide goal of 150,000 personalized risk assessment profiles. Risty adds that tremendous

strides have been made in identifying breast cancer risk earlier than ever. Previously, women wanting to understand their breast cancer risk would go through a longer screening process with a primary care provider or genetic counselor. Now, questions are being asked and answered electronically as early as possible. “By the time you come in to visit the breast clinic or genetic counselor, we already have that information and can start the process at a more advanced point,” Risty says. Staying current is another key component of the Athena program. Each year, participants are re-invited to update their

answers and information. Risty explains a woman may have very few risk factors for breast cancer, however, the next year, that same woman may have seen a family member diagnosed with breast cancer. “When she comes in for the screening mammogram and fills out the questionnaire, that change in her family history will be flagged very quickly,” she says. “Fifteen minutes of your time really can bring to light some of the risk factors that you may not have thought of and can help provide you with the most appropriate resources for your breast health.”

f you struggle to get the motivation to exercise, it can be really hard to convince the rest of your family to be physically fit. To help you out, we have a few ideas about activities that your youngsters can engage in and have fun, and the best part is, they won’t even know they are exercising! Studies show that about three out of four children ages 5 to 10 get less than one hour of physical activity daily, so Orthopedic Institute is sharing kid-friendly fitness recommendations to help change all of that.
Gardening Team-Up Do your children love playing in the dirt? Unleash them on your garden to help turn over the soil and put new plants in the ground. It gets everyone outdoors and moving around. Having your children help water and pull the easy weeds will keep them invested throughout the season. It can also spark their appetites for the fruit and vegetables they nurtured.

Dog Time If you have an energetic dog, having your children run around in the backyard or a park with their canine pal can be excellent and entertaining exercise. Playing fetch (or keep-away if that’s more of your dog’s game) should have you and your kids on the move.
Commercial Fitness Breaks Putting your kids in front of the TV is an easy way to keep them entertained, but don’t let that stop them from being active. During commercial breaks or between episodes, have the family play an “exercise game.” Name the exercise after the show, like “SpongeBob sit-ups,” or do a follow-the-leader-style activity incorporating simple exercises.
Simple Walks Don’t over-think it. Walks are an excellent, simple activity

Give yourself a list of things to spot, from easy to maybe a little more difficult (i.e., four dogs, two maple leaves, three robins, etc.). Take a walk around the neighborhood or down the road before or after meals. Think about taking a hike along a bike trail or down a country road for those in a rural area. Cool summer evenings make for great walking times.
Sports Night You should also consider having a family sports night. Practice dribbling basketballs, kicking around a soccer ball or playing catch. You might even get a child’s golf set and make a game out of hitting whiffle balls around the yard. Not only are these fun exercise activities, but they also make for a nice introduction into competitive sports later in life.

ou can find one of the most unforgettable and spectacular vacation destinations right here in our home state. The Black Hills of South Dakota are truly a sight to see. They are home to one of the largest concentrations of public and national parks in the region, with national treasures, tons of familyfriendly attractions, wildlife, and so much more. Many of the activities and attractions throughout the Black Hills can be discovered by driving the area and following the signs that lead you there. The short drive south of Rapid City on Highway 16, or as some people call it “The Road to Rushmore”, will show you the way to several of these fantastic locations. You will see the Black Hills Maze & Family Adventure Park, which offers a giant maze on two levels, rock climbing, mini-golf, and more. Just down the road is the Fort Hays Old West Town, where you can enjoy an inexpensive cowboy pancake breakfast and an evening chuckwagon dinner show with live music. South of here is Reptile Gardens, one of the most popular family attractions in the Black Hills. With its impressive collection of reptiles, tropical fauna, and animal shows, it’s no wonder The Guinness Book of World Records has labeled Reptile Gardens as the “World’s Largest Reptile Zoo”. The Sky Dome gives visitors the feeling of an indoor exotic jungle, filled with several rare plants and animals. Spilling into a 30 foot koi and turtle pond are the beautiful Tortuga Falls, an outdoor waterfall surrounded by lush, blooming plants and ornamental trees. Visitors can learn all about birds, snakes, gators and more while seeing a live expert wildlife show. Kids will go crazy over petting the giant Galapagos and Aldabra Tortoises, and meeting birds from around the world. A couple of newer nearby attractions are the Dinosaur Museum and the Founding

Fathers Black Hills. Continuing on, just 8 miles from Rapid City, you will find Bear Country U.S.A., which allows you to view wildlife from your vehicle in a drivethrough park. Featuring the world’s largest collection of privately owned black bears, Bear Country U.S.A. consists of a 3-mile drive through 200 acres within the Black Hills. You are likely to spy black bears, grizzly bears, and over 20 other North American species such as bison, wolves, bighorn sheep, and elk. After your driving tour, stop by Babyland, where baby bears can be seen playing together outdoors. There are several extraordinary caves and caverns to explore and tour in the Black Hills as well. These majestic natural wonders are the perfect attraction for people of all ages and abilities. Located just outside of Rapid City, the Black Hills Caverns were discovered by gold seekers in 1882. Two tours are offered here, the Adventure Tour, which is more of a hike going down and back up a set of 150 stairs into the underground cavern, and the Crystal Tour, which is an easier and shorter walking tour on the main level with less stairs to climb. Here you can also learn to identify numerous rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils while gemstone panning. You can tour one of the world’s top five longest caves at either Jewel or Wind Cave, or see some of the largest dogtooth spar crystals in existence at Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns. Explore Rushmore Cave on a scenic cave tour, then have some fun at Rush Mountain Adventure Park. Here you can enjoy the Soaring Eagle Zip-line Ride, the Gunslinger 7-D Interactive Ride, and Sparky’s Snackitorium. Driving just a short distance further, you will find the Cosmos Mystery Area, which claims to be a natural phenomenon that defies gravity. Visitors will be intrigued by the 30-minute guided tour colliding mystery, science, and humor. A family-friendly attraction, there is also a gift shop, ice cream, and a Geode Adventure. Footprint Birds
Materials: white paper, paint, paper plate, black marker. Instructions: Using your choice of paint color for each child, pour a small amount of it onto a paper plate and carefully spread it around so that your child’s foot can fit into it. Next, carefully press your child’s foot into the paint, making sure to cover all of the toes and the bottom of their foot. Press their painted footprint sideways onto a white piece of paper, and if you have more than one child, make sure to leave room for all of their footprints. The toes of the footprints will be the tail feathers, and the heel of the foot will be the head. Once the paint is completely dry, use a black marker to draw an eye and a beak on the heel of the foot, then draw a curved line connecting the bottom of the heel to the bottom of the big toe. This will be the breast of the bird, which you can color in yellow or whatever color you choose. Draw two bird’s feed to finish, then write a creative message such as “Grandma’s Tweet Hearts” on the paper, along with your children’s names next to their feet.

FOR KIDS
Cupcake Liner Card
Materials: colored paper in your choice for the card and in green for the stem, glue, cupcake liners in different colors and patterns, scissors, a black marker, and a photo of your child that will fit into the middle of the cupcake liner. Instructions: Choose the color of construction paper you want your card to be made from, then fold this in half. Using at least three different cupcake liners, cut around the edge of the liners so that when you layer them, you can see each pattern or color. Glue the liners on the top of the card, layering from biggest to smallest and creating a flower. Cut a stem and leaf from green construction paper and glue them below the cupcake liners. Cut out a small photo of your child and glue that to the middle of the cupcake liner flower. Add any message you see fit inside the card.
Handprint Flower Pot
Materials: colored paper in your choice for the card and flower pot, your choice of paint color for the flowers and in green for the handprint, glue, and a black marker. Instructions: Using green paint, carefully cover your child’s hand, then press down onto your choice of colored construction paper. Dip your child’s thumb in your choice of paint color for the middle of the flowers at the top of each green finger, then in a different color for the flower petals. Once the paint is completely dry, cut a flower pot out from a piece of construction paper, then glue that onto the bottom of the handprint. Using a black marker, write a nice poem for Mother’s Day onto the flower pot. Here is a cute example: “I’ve made some Mother’s Day flowers with my fingers and my thumb so you’ll always have these memories for all the years to come.”

Kids’ Mental Health: It’s OK to Talk About BY ALYSSA KUECKER, AVERA HEALTH
T
en years ago, mental health conditions were taboo — something to hide and something of which to be ashamed. Fortunately, while sometimes scary to admit, more people are bravely coming forward to bring awareness to these conditions. Julia Alzoubaidi, PhD, licensed psychologist at Avera Behavioral Health Center, specializes in child/adolescent behavioral health. Her message is this, “People with mental health conditions have the power to manage their symptoms and lead a full life.” Some of the most common conditions in young people can include: affective (mood) disorders, anxiety disorders, attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, and disruptive behavior disorders. Symptoms for many mental health issues don’t arise at any particular age, but some can appear in children as young as 3 or 4 years. Whether or not a child does experience a condition such as depression or anxiety can begin with genetics, something we really cannot control. This predisposition is often “awakened” by environmental stress, such as difficult relationships with family,

friends or teachers, or traumatic events, such as a car accident or death in the family. Also, just because children may have the underlying genetics for a mental health issue, doesn’t mean they are destined to experience debilitating symptoms for the rest of their lives. While it is not possible to prevent mental health conditions, parents can help support psychological well-being by influencing their child’s environment. Start with these simple tips: • Ensure your child is eating a healthy diet that limits sugar, salt and bad fats. Studies have shown that poor diets can aggravate mental illness. • Promote physical activity. Exercise increases the feel-good hormone in the brain. • Encourage plenty of rest. Lack of sleep impairs judgment and energy, causes irritability, and lowers performance in school. • Develop a relationship with your child. This provides the child with security and reassurance. Consider this: If teenagers are

“If you suspect your child is struggling, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent!” said Alzoubaidi. “You’re not alone in this; there are professionals who are trained and eager to help your child.”
PARENTING & PREGNANCY
But sometimes, even when we do our best, things happen. As a parent, you know your child’s personality and when something just doesn’t seem right. Perhaps you’ve witnessed a change. Has your child experienced any of the following? • Withdrawal from favorite activities and friends • A decline in performance at school, both academically and socially • New anxiety or extreme emotions during normal activities, such as eating dinner, doing homework, leaving for school, etc. • Changes in appetite or sleep “If you suspect your child is struggling, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent!” said Alzoubaidi. “You’re not alone in this; there are professionals who are trained and eager to help your child.” If you have concerns, start a dialogue with your family doctor. Share your concerns. He or she will gladly direct you to qualified and trusted behavioral health experts who are experienced in working with children and teenagers. It’s difficult to watch your child endure depression, an eating disorder or any other condition. While you may feel frustrated with the situation, remain composed. Be a pillar of strength your child can lean on, offering a listening ear and support whenever he or she opens up. “Please don’t ignore the signs of mental illness. When treated early, many young people can fully recover or successfully control their symptoms,” said Alzoubaidi. “Not only does the life of your child matter, but the quality of his or her life matters as well. There is support out there to help your child develop the tools to cope with a mental health condition and lead a fulfilling life.” To reach the Avera Behavioral Health 24-hour assessment line, call 800-691-4336.

Cody and the Rules of Life by Tricia Springstubb In Cody’s life, many things are hard to predict. Like why her older brother, Wyatt, is obsessed with his new bicycle called the Cobra, or why her best friend Pearl suddenly wants to trade favorite toys. Pearl says she will trust Cody with Arctic Fox because Cody is a trusty person. But Cody doesn’t want to give up her beloved Gremlin, and she regrets it as soon as she hands him over. When the Cobra goes missing, Cody has to decide for herself who is trusty and who is not. If only she had Gremlin to talk to! Surely Pearl wouldn’t mind if she secretly traded back . . . it’s not stealing if it belonged to you in the first place, right? Ages 7 yrs - 10 yrs Candlewickpress.com
Sophie Someone by Hayley Long Some words are hard to get out of your mouth. Because they spell out secrets that are too huge to be spoken out loud. But if you bottle them up, you might burst. So here’s my story. Told the only way I dare tell it. Sophie Nieuwenleven is sort of English and sort of Belgian. She and her family came to live in Belgium when she was only four or five, but she’s fourteen now and has never been sure why they left England in the first place. She loves her international school, adores her friend Comet, and is protective of her little brother, Hercule. But it’s hard to feel carefree when her mom never leaves the apartment — ordering groceries online and blasting music in her room — and her dad has a dead-end job as a car mechanic. Then one day Sophie makes a startling discovery, a discovery that unlocks the mystery of who she really is. This is a novel about identity and confusion and about feeling so utterly freaked out that you can’t put it into words. But it’s also about hope. And trust. And the belief that, somehow, everything will be OK. Ages 12 yrs and up Candlewickpress.com
