AR WORKSHOP Brings DIY to the 605

f you have ever watched HGTV or the DIY Network…or scrolled through Pinterest….wondering if you could ever do home décor projects yourself, now’s the chance to give it a try. AR Workshop opened its first South Dakota location on Western Avenue in September. The “AR” stands for Anders Ruff® (www.andersruff.com) , named for

founders Maureen Anders and Adria Ruff. While the two designers have had a blog and printable party supply business based in North Carolina since 2010, they started AR Workshop in 2016 and already have 53 locations across the U.S. that offer handson classes in creating custom home décor and gifts from scratch. Owners Tracy and Caleb Hinkkanen
have been thrilled by the response to their new business adventure. Both were busy with their careers and two children, but they had long dreamed about owning their own business. Tracy says she stumbled upon the concept of AR unexpectedly during a late night feeding of their newborn son. “Immediately I told Caleb, ‘We have to

open this here. Sioux Falls needs a place like this!’” says Tracy. “I knew this was the business venture we had been waiting for. As a realtor and former preschool teacher, this was a perfect combination of my passions, which are making homes beautiful and teaching. Caleb happens to be incredibly handy and a natural wood worker and DIYer, so it couldn’t be more
perfect for us.” She says they feel incredibly blessed that the Sioux Falls area has joined them in their excitement. “The goal we are striving for each day when we walk into the shop is for this space to be a warm, inviting place for friends and family to gather as they converse and create. My greatest hope is
that the memories and the projects will be cherished for years to come.” The studio’s atmosphere could be described as a “boutique” workshop, with its open ceiling, rustic wood wall accents and industrial tables, which are partnered with AR Workshop’s signature aqua color for the stools and light fixtures. Displays along two walls are filled with sample projects that range from framed and plank wood signs and canvas wall hangings to trays, pillows and lazy susans. The unique project calendar behind the counter is comprised of rows of clipboards with each day’s events written on the chalkboard fronts. “We get a lot of people stopping in or calling to figure out the best way to book a workshop, and while we always enjoy chatting, we ultimately end up telling them that the website is the best place to start,” says Tracy. “From there, people can explore our project gallery of over 500 designs and add in their customized information. The options are endless but names, dates and addresses are common. They can view the upcoming schedule of workshops, choose the type of project they want to complete and book their own workshop.” The AR Workshop staff can also create a completely customized graphic for your project, but it does require an additional fee and registration at least 72 hours in advance of the workshop date.
etc. for her | December 2017 9
The website provides information about the workshops and the number of seats available. You might want to just check one out yourself or invite a few friends or family members for a fun night out. There are various options for groups. The studio can accommodate up to 36 people, so if you have five or six people in a group, you can reserve a private table at a public workshop. Or, if you have 10-12 in your group, you can get two tables at a public workshop. Another option for larger groups is to book a private party at AR Workshop. Each night during classes, an instructor provides guests with all of the materials, tools and guidance needed for the project. And, to add to the fun, you can sip on a beer, wine or cup of tea available for sale back at the corner bar. “We literally walk you through each step,” Tracy explains, “so if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life, that’s okay! We are here to help you with everything it takes to make a beautiful project.” The instructors lead guests through the process of how to distress, sand, stain, assemble, add hardware and paint on their customized stencil. Their job, Tracy says, is to make sure guests walk out the door with a piece they are truly proud to take home and hang on the wall, no matter their skill level. Each table has an assistant to help with any questions, as well as to get guests anything they need, such as more paint, more stain or more wine! One thing that Tracy says sets AR Workshop apart is the quality of the materials they use. On workshop nights, guests choose from a wide variety of ecofriendly and non-toxic stains (no icky odor or harmful chemicals!), as well as designer paints to personalize their project. AR Workshop offers family craft days and kids’ birthday parties, and next year they will begin to hold kids’ summer camps. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @arworkshopsiouxfalls to keep up with the latest news, special promotions and project releases!

Project Warm Up December 9
P
roject Warm-Up was started in 2006 by Kaitlin and Tracy Vik as a service project for the Key Club at Lincoln High School. That first year, 100 blankets were made in one afternoon. Each year, more schools, groups, and teams have gotten together to make blankets and the project has grown! Over the past 11 years, Project Warm-Up has distributed over 18,000 blankets to children and families in need. Some children face poverty, homelessness (last school year the SFSD identified over 900 students as homeless), death of a parent, placement in foster care, serious illness, or are new to our country (and South Dakota winters!). We know a simple blanket can’t fix their situation, but hopefully it will provide them some warmth and comfort while dealing with what life is currently offering them. Project Warm-Up has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to provide a new blanket to each family member when they receive the keys to their new home. Project Warm-Up has answered the call when tornados struck the communities of Delmont and Wessington Springs,
12 out and about |
ET CETERA
and when a flood devastated the town of Canton. This past year we partnered with Rachel Schuldt to provide blankets for her Delivering Hope-Chemo Care Bags that she distributes to adults and children who are undergoing chemotherapy. We have also partnered with Hugs 4 Haddley and Amy Jo Lems to deliver blankets to children in local hospitals. Project Warm-Up exists solely upon the generosity of others. People donate funds, fleece and/or time. We have gotten pretty savvy in our fleece shopping and can make a child-size blanket for $12. A donation of $100 would enable us to wrap eight children in the warmth and comfort of a new blanket. Imagine what a larger donation could do! Our goal is to make at least 3000 blankets this year! The need is great, but we are ready to meet the challenge! Your donation is tax deductible. Consider joining over 500 volunteers for the biggest blanket making party ever on Saturday, December 9th, 11:00-3:00, at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary! Come when you want, stay as long as you want!

IT’S JUSTICE, STUPID! BY RON ROBINSON
W
hat attracted this writer to the Powder House case of 80 years past (as explored in the book Kaboom: The True Story of the Powder House Blast) was not so much the spectacular explosion itself — which shook foundations and broke windows across Sioux Falls and was felt up to a hundred miles away — as how the sensational nature of the crime corrupted justice. The functionaries of Bill Clinton’s first campaign for the presidency were not wrong to post a sign proclaiming, “It’s the economy, Stupid.” But in a larger sense it is justice that matters most, and it always has been. Going back to the roots of western civilization in ancient Greece, humankind’s obsession has been with justice and how to attain it in our institutions. The plays written by Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides focused on those situations, derived from myth, that had the great questions of justice at their heart: Is simple revenge enough, or should mitigating circumstances be considered? Does the punishment sometimes exceed the crime? What if a person simply makes a mistake that leads to a catastrophe? In the Bible. as well, justice is often at the heart of the matter. The wisdom of Solomon, for example, was based on his handling of difficult cases, such as the one in which two women claimed the same child. In the history of Sioux Falls, too, justice has often been at the center of the story. The trial of Thomas Egan in connection with the death of his wife, for example, resulted in the particularly gruesome hanging of an innocent man outside the Sioux Falls courthouse. The trying of Plenty Horses (Tasunke-Ota) for the slaying of Lt. Edward Casey in connection with the Wounded Knee massacre posed the question of whether or not the killing was an act of war. After two trials in Sioux Falls, Plenty Horses was declared not guilty because he was acting as a warrior, not as an individual. It required two trials, as well, for juries to find Emma Kaufman of Sioux Falls guilty only of assault and battery in the matter of the beating death of Kaufman’s servant, Agnes Polreis. Whether or not justice was served in these cases is debated even

HISTORY
today. With those precedents in mind, an examination of the trial and conviction of William Nesbit for the murder of Floyd Parker in the Powder House case reveals several flaws in the criminal justice system of the time. One of the most central mistakes made in the case was the assumption that Parker died as a result of the blast. In fact, as revealed in the confession of the actual killer, Lee Bradley, Parker died before the fuse was lit. The blast was intended to conceal his murder. When portions of Parker’s body were found and exhibited before the jury, however, the sensational trumped the truth. Another mistake was to accept an accomplice in the crime as a witness for the state. Harry “Slim” Reeves, who was in fact guilty of shooting “Dynamite Girl” Helen Seiler, had every reason to lie in support of the prosecution’s case. And lie he did, completely neutralizing Nesbit’s story that he was, in effect, an innocent bystander. As a result, Reeves was not tried in the case at all, and was instead turned over to Iowa authorities to stand trial for the lesser crime of burglary, while Nesbit was convicted. Throughout the trial, the prosecution portrayed Nesbit as a hardened criminal, when actually up to that time he had served prison time for only one crime, and even that one of questionable potency. In World War One, Nesbit served in the infantry, participating in at least five drives against the Germans. At that point he was assigned to a burial detail, but when the unit broke up he took the opportunity to hitch a ride back to Paris, where he sat out the war for a couple weeks. For that he was tried for desertion and sentenced to a term of two years at Leavenworth. He was released after only 18 months, and from that time until the occasion of the Powder House blast, had made his way, first as a boxer, then as a truck driver, and finally as owner of a seedy hotel in Sioux City. Although he got into trouble during prohibition on alcohol charges, he was never convicted. Nesbit’s “tragic error,” so to speak was to accept the challenge of jewelry wholesaler W. A. Ehlerman to come up with some yeggs to stage a phony robbery in order to collect on insurance. That effort

involved Nesbit with the real killer, Lee Bradley, and the rest of the socalled Powder House gang. The bollixed caper in Sioux City led to the flight to Sioux Falls. The killing, however, had to do with friction between Bradley and Parker over the girl. It was Nesbit’s misfortune to be “along for the ride.” His lawyer tried as best he could, but with only Nesbit as witness for the defense, the accused was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. A year later, exactly 80 years ago this month, Nesbit’s appeal to the state supreme court failed. Over a decade later, when J. Edgar Hoover was desperate for publicity, Nesbit was put on the FBI’s very first Ten Most Wanted list for walking away from the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls while serving as trusty in service to the warden. He was described as “one of the most dangerous criminals alive because of the vicious nature of his crime … ‘murder by dynamite.’” He was captured just two days after the notice appeared, living in a cave on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Paul, reduced to poverty and hardly the image of a crazed killer. Nesbit’s case highlights the danger of yielding to emotion and jumping to conclusions unwarranted by the facts. In these days the lesson is particularly applicable. We seem to be in the grip of persuasive and erroneous suppositions. Almost every issue assailing the American public — tax reform, gun control, race relations, women’s rights,

immigration laws, on and on— poses powerful emotional beliefs against reasoned solutions. It might pay to sit back and think a while about the Powder House case and similar miscarriages of justice before we leap into the fray. Ron Robinson is the author of Kaboom: The True Story of the Powder House Blast. He also serves on the board of directors of the Minnehaha Century Fund, whose mission is to restore and preserve historic sites and to educate the public about local history.

athan and Erin Bosch have lived in their central Sioux Falls house for 17 years and, even though there is a dynamic housing market and new construction in Sioux Falls, they don’t see themselves leaving this home any time soon. “It might be a little smaller than other houses,” says Erin, “but we really appreciate the charm and the details that come with older houses. Plus, it’s easier to keep clean, and we love our
proximity to downtown.” Even with all the features they loved about the house, they knew when they moved in that it would need some updates. So, over the years, they have embarked on remodeling projects to reflect their own personal style. Erin describes her style as a “curated mix of unusual pieces.” The home is a wonderful mix of old and new, modern and

traditional and stylish and sentimental. Inside the front door sits a desk that was an accidental thrift store find, paired with a green fabric chair that Erin’s grandparents had received as a wedding gift. Little white trees sit on the desk for the Christmas season, and a white fur wreath hangs above the desk, next to a framed print of Andy Warhol that reads, “I Think Everybody Should Like Everybody.” That print also hangs in Erin’s office. “I just love it,” she says, “because it’s a great reminder that we just need to be kind to one another.” The living room and dining room have the same hardwood floors as when they moved into the house, but the rest of the woodwork upstairs is white. The light blue walls in the living room provide a pretty backdrop for the white Christmas tree in the corner. With its silver and gold decorations, the tree is reminiscent of the traditional holiday tune by Burl Ives. The living room walls are a mini art gallery with a large painting on one wall and a collage of prints on another,

including a framed vintage Sioux Falls postcard and framed prints of a bird and a flamingo from a 1977 Audubon calendar. The birds were featured in May and September, which are Erin’s and Nathan’s birth months. The dining room and kitchen underwent
more significant makeovers. The light grey dining room at one time had been red. A built-in corner china cabinet reflects the era in which the house was built, and an over-sized lamp shade covering the light above the table brings in a modern touch. Erin says they have had the “old” dark
dining room table for years, but it has character that goes with the house and, she adds, it can expand to seat 14 people. To provide a little holiday flair, she created a tablescape using a white faux fur runner, bare branches and a small white deer and polar bear.

Three square canvas prints provide a brilliant pop of color in the dining room. They were created by local artist Jennifer White, owner of the Post Pilgrim Art Gallery. The old kitchen was a small galley-style room with limited counter space, says Erin. They removed a wall and the soffits
and updated the look with grey cabinets, white tile backsplash and grey and white patterned floor tile laid in a Herringbone pattern (she credits both the talent and the patience of her husband and her dad for the flooring). While other cabinets go up to the
ceiling, they opted for open shelves above the range. Along with overhead lights, they also added lighting under the cabinets. “I just love the brightness and openness in here,” Erin says. After their contractor, Nate Perrion, custom built one cabinet with a butcher

windows to extend the time they could use the room that looks out on their fencedin yard and patio. While there is still a little work to be done on the floor and ceiling, Erin says those projects will wait until spring. In the meantime, the porch is adorned with its own white Christmas tree

Christmas Gifts for the Foodie on Your List
W
here do you find the perfect Christmas gift for the foodie on your list when you know they are hard to buy for? Well dear friends, you’ve come to the right place. You know the old saying “it takes one to know one?” I am the King of Hard to Buy For! I’m not the kind of guy who’s going to drop a lot of hints or strategically leave catalogs with dog-eared pages around the house. Nope, it’s not my style. Instead, when I see something that I either want or think I need, I simply buy it. Over the years this has caused great consternation for my beloved, it’s a pretty hard battle for her to win. With that in mind, here’s a list a things that I’ve either already bought or have my eye on; they

might just be the perfect gift for the hardto-buy-for person on your list.
Cooking Classes Several restaurants and retailers now offer cooking classes that have something for just about every level of cook, from getting kids started to learning from our area’s top chefs. I’ve taken some classes at K Restaurant, Look’s Market and others. Lately my beloved and I have really been enjoying the classes at Plum’s. When the store was remodeled they created a beautiful exhibition kitchen, perfect for teaching and talking with the chef and your classmates. We’ve found that the classes make a fun night out, with a full meal and
a glass of wine (and you can buy more if you’d like!) And by the time you are reading this, I will have done my first class on the other side of the counter. Yes, I’ll be acting as sous chef for a professional during one of their Dueling Knives competition evenings in late November. It should be fun, wish me luck! Classes run from $55 to $65 per person. If you don’t know which class, buy a gift card at Plumscooking.com or just stop down to the store on 8th Street. Seriously, if you haven’t seen Plum’s since they remodeled, you’re missing a gem on the Eastbank in downtown Sioux Falls.
Your Own Personal Olive Tree Many years ago I heard about a

company named Nudo. They give people like you and me a chance to adopt an olive tree in Italy. Then, twice a year your tree sends you the gift of olive oil. The spring shipment is oil produced by your tree. OK, so your tree, and all its friends in the same grove, pool their resources and share the bounty with the adoptive families. The second shipment comes in the fall. It is another package of single estate olive oil. Each package includes three 500ml tins of outstanding quality, guaranteed extra virgin olive oil. It runs $150 for a twice a year gift adoption including an adoption certificate and a booklet that tells the proud recipient about their tree. Quarterly and one time adoptions are also available at Nudoadopt. com. If you adopt for yourself, the tins of oil make great gifts too, and you’ll probably have some left over to give away.
Hand-Forged Pans I admit I’ve become mildly obsessed with Blanc Creatives pans. Blanc Creatives is a small group of folks in Charlottesville, Virginia, who make carbon steel pans and
other assorted kitchen related tools by hand, the old fashioned way. Founded by blacksmith and designer Correy Blanc, the company employs a couple of woodworkers and a half-dozen blacksmiths. The end results are beautiful, hand-hammered skillets, sauciers, roasters and sauté pans with tons of character. About this time last year, I saw them listed on several Christmas and “best of” lists. By the time I ordered a medium skillet in January, there was a 4-week wait to get mine shipped. They come pre-seasoned with coconut oil and deliver perfectly seared pork chops or steaks. Clean up is a snap; just rinse with water and scrub out anything that gets stuck (they are naturally non-stick, so that rarely happens.) Just don’t use soap; basically treat it like cast iron, although it doesn’t weigh as much. I’ve got my eye on the large roaster next; too bad I won’t have it until after I’ve made Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Cheap? No, but really the good stuff rarely is and it doesn’t cost much more than a good All-Clad pan. Get yours (or a gift for me) at Blanccreatives.com
Ownership in the Co-op I’ve been a member/owner of Co-op Natural Foods in Sioux Falls for years. It’s a great place to get local produce when the farmers markets close and they carry a great assortment of locally sourced eggs, meat, veggies and dairy as well. Now they’ve added a kitchen making soups, sandwiches and salads. Not to be outdone by the mega-marts, you can order your food online and have it delivered the next day. What’s even better? You can own a share in the co-op for $200 and walk in like you own the place. Buy a membership for yourself, or as a gift. Stop in at 18th and Minnesota to find out more.
Spice it Up! I admit I have a relatively low tolerance for spicy. Too hot and I start to sweat, but I do like a little heat and the added flavor a good hot sauce can bring. The key is a “good” hot sauce. Too many are just heat and vinegar, with no real depth of flavor. But I’ve found a good source and the best part is it’s local. Dagger and Arrow is a small

pepper sauce company started by Beau and Kali Vondra. Beau is one of the partners in Look’s Market and a veteran of restaurants in Sioux Falls and the Twin Cities. He started making sauces for fun, and as more and more people tried them and asked to buy them, he started Dagger and Arrow. My sister likes the hotter Kiss of Death Habanero Sauce, while I’m partial to the Diablo Verde Serrano Pepper Sauce and Hi-Fi Cayenne Sauce. You can get them at Look’s (of course), Plum’s and Co-op Natural Foods and also try them at several restaurants in town like M.B. Haskett’s, Queen City Bakery, Phillip’s Ave Diner, and Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen. Beyond our fair city, the sauces have made it to shelves in Minneapolis, Denver and even Washington DC. Check them out, you won’t be sorry. And a set of two or three bottles makes a wonderful gift. That’s what is on this hard-to-buyfor foodie’s Christmas wish list. But if you know someone who likes to cook, maybe all you need to do is offer to buy

ingredients and bring the wine. Or if your foodie friend likes to eat but not cook, invite them to a dinner out. Experiences can be tremendous gifts, because they are something you can share together. But if you want me to cook for you, bring one of those handmade pans with you, hint, hint!

f you came over to my house seven years ago, this is what you’d find on my coffee table: a Kidtopia catalog, a JC Penney catalog, a Best Buy ad, and a Toys R Us catalog filled with sticky notes and permanent marker etchings with my kids’ initials next to the toys they want… Spongebob Squarepants plush toys, Super Mario Kart for the Wii, Star Wars Legos, etc. But now that all three of my boys are teenagers, there are no marked-up, highlighted ads sitting around the house. No handwritten lists or letters. Instead, I get links to websites and requests via text messages. Don’t get me wrong, my wife and I talk to our kids all the time and vice versa,

but it just seems like our little boys have grown quickly, especially with the access they have to technology. As for me, I’m still old school: on my coffee table this year, you’ll find a Wine Enthusiast catalog with MY name on it… I hope my wife is reading this… As I flip through this catalog, I get that same feeling my kids used to get when they would stare at their Christmas catalogs with wide eyes. There isn’t a page that doesn’t interest me, but I’ll try to keep this article to the point. I have a chosen a few items that might just be the perfect gift for that special oenophile in your life.
Wine Cork Kit
Vinturi Red Wine Aerator
Wine Refrigerator
This is an environmentally friendly gift that will help you preserve your memories. Memories are created every day with a simple popping of a cork. After making a lazy susan, trivet, or cork board, you also have something that will protect surfaces and furnish walls. All you have to do is supply the corks… I better go get busy.
I know it’s hard to believe that there is a tool that can make your wine taste better instantly, but you’ve got to read about this. The Vinturi Red Wine Aerator is clearly on the cutting edge of wine aerating. Mixing just the right amount of air with your wine at the precise moments, this see-through aerator allows your reds to breathe instantly. The Vinturi Red Wine Aerator results are a better bouquet, enhanced flavor, and a smoother finish.
Wine refrigerators offer a stylish look to your wine collection while providing a controlled environment for optimal wine storage conditions. Some have awesome reflective smoked-glass doors while others have natural wood finishes. These silent cooling systems have no moving parts and are CFC-free, meaning that you get silent, long-lasting, and environmentally safe refrigeration for your wines.

My most favorite of the Riedel decanters. This elegant Riedel Eve decanter is an artful masterpiece, as well as an extremely functional wine vessel. The Eve decanter features a generously tall silhouette of almost 20 inches, and the unique design is reminiscent of an elegant upright cobra waiting to drink the wine you pour forth. The person serving from this decanter can create a dramatic presentation, as it is necessary to turn the vessel a specific way to pour. No worries, though. This beautifully packaged decanter comes with an instructional DVD narrated by Maximilian Riedel, which explains the pouring technique and cleaning instructions. Delight your guests and serve them a lovely red wine in this visual masterpiece. The Eve decanter, designed by Maximilian Riedel in 2008, is a tribute to the family’s matriarch, Eva Riedel. Each Eve decanter is free blown by a master glass blower in Austria and is a unique and functional work of art. Decanting young wines several hours before they are served gives the wine a chance to bloom and attain a stage of development that normally requires years of aging. The Eve decanter achieves these same results immediately, by allowing for the maximum effect of oxygen on the young tannins and aromas of the wine - liberating the aromas, intensifying the fruitiness of the mid-palate and rounding out the texture. From my family to yours, have a safe and happy holiday this year, and I will see you all next year for some more wine fun in 2018. Carpe Vino! Riccardo is spending Christmas in Sioux Falls this year with his wife of 20 years, Marybeth, and their three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon. Riccardo is a Level I Sommelier and Certified Beer Server. He is the VP of Sales and Marketing at Fernson Brewing Company in Sioux Falls.

THROUGH CARTILAGE RESTORATION BY KATHRYN DANIEL, AVERA HEALTH
W
hen was the last time you thought about your cartilage? Hopefully you haven’t had to think about it in a while. Because when your cartilage is working properly, your joints move without pain. Cartilage helps you move seamlessly throughout your day without thinking about it.
56 mind-body-spirit |
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
But when it’s damaged, you’ll know it by the pain, discomfort and potential swelling around your joints.
! t s e B e h t e r a s t s e V
Why is Cartilage Important? Cartilage is a connective tissue found throughout the body. It’s thick, smoother than ice and lines the ends of bones where they meet to form a joint. Because it has no nerve supply, it acts as a protective cushion that allows you to move without pain. However, cartilage also lacks a blood supply. That means, if injured, cartilage doesn’t heal well on its own. That’s where cartilage restoration comes in. These innovative procedures use healthy, strong cartilage to replace areas of your joint where cartilage is damaged or worn down. It not only alleviates pain and swelling, but may also prevent the development of arthritis and the need for a joint replacement in the future.
Is Cartilage Restoration Right for Me?
2608 S. Louise Ave. | Sioux Falls 605.275.5592 | style-encoresiouxfalls.com
“Ideal candidates for cartilage restoration are active adults – from teenagers to adults in their 50s – who have chronic knee or shoulder pain caused by cartilage damage,” says Matthew Blake, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Avera Orthopedics. That kind of damage can be caused by a traumatic injury – such as a dislocation or fracture – or the simple wear and tear that comes with sports or physical activity. “It’s a great alternative for those who’ve already tried antiinflammatory medications, injections and physical therapy without the pain relief they need,” he adds. “It offers them new hope that they’ll be able to get back to the activities they enjoy.” If an MRI shows cartilage loss, damage or defect, Blake recommends a diagnostic arthroscopy. This minimally-invasive procedure allows him to look closely at that cartilage and determine which type of cartilage procedure is the best fit.
Quick Recovery with Micro-Fracture A good option for those – such as competitive athletes – who want to return to their activities within four to five months is a micro-fracture procedure. During this procedure, the surgeon cleans the cartilage and creates small holes in the bone to promote growth of a new scar tissue type of cartilage. “The downtime is shorter and the return to sport is faster, but the benefits of it have less longevity,” says Blake. “Typically, it works really well for about two to three years, so it’s a good shortterm solution.”
etc. for her | December 2017 57
“These are great procedures,” says Blake. “They do take patience; however, within 12 – 18 months patients say they feel like a new person. So it’s time well spent.”
Long-Term Pain Relief with MACI, OAT and OAC For those looking for long-term pain relief and willing to wait 12-18 months for a near full recovery, there are three additional options. During the matrix autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) procedure, a small biopsy of cartilage is taken and used to grow new cartilage in a specialized lab. “Sometimes simply cleaning up and smoothing the cartilage can bring pain relief for a period of time. If the pain comes back within five years, we can go back and implant the new cartilage that was grown in the lab,” describes Blake. If you have enough cartilage to spare and the area with the defect is small, your own healthy cartilage can be transferred to the damaged area through osteochondral autograft transfer (OAT).
58 mind-body-spirit |
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
For larger areas, the surgeon can use cartilage from a cadaver through a procedure known as osteochondral allograft transplant (OAC).
Get Moving Again with Comprehensive Care Cartilage restoration procedures are relatively quick – typically lasting less than an hour – and patients can return home the same day. The path to full recovery, however, requires time and dedication. Rehabilitation includes physical therapy, strength training and, depending on your goals, sports specific training for competitive athletes. “These are great procedures,” says Blake. “They do take patience; however, within 12 – 18 months patients say they feel like a new person. So it’s time well spent.”

ost Americans will experience back pain. Approximately 8 out of every 10 Americans will have back problems at some point during their lifetimes. Nearly a third of female adults suffer from lower back pain, compared to a quarter of males, and over 30 percent of men acknowledged when their condition affects work compared to just 20 percent of women. Back pain can be caused by a variety of conditions—while osteoporosis and arthritis are traditionally orthopedic conditions that you hear a lot about, there are other potential causes of your pain of which you should be aware.

Here are four potential orthopedic conditions that you should know about.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING
Sciatica You’ve probably heard someone say something along the lines of “my sciatica is acting up” at one point or another—but what does this condition actually entail? First of all, sciatica is more of a symptom than it is an out-and-out condition. It’s often a sign of other conditions, such as the ones below. It will typically involve a consistent pain, usually at its worst when a person is sitting, in the leg and rear. That achiness or feeling of weakness can make rising from a seated position uncomfortable. Pain emanating through the sciatic nerve can cause pain from the lower back all the way down one side of your lower body to your feet. While it’s more common among middle-aged individuals, younger people aren’t immune to
Approximately 8 out of every 10 sciatic pain—people as young as their 20s can experience this type of nerve pain. It affects nearly half of the population at some point in their lives, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. In young people, sciatica is most commonly caused by disc herniation.
Degenerative Disc Disease The style of the condition can vary, but generally speaking, degenerative disc disease (or “DDD”) is caused by inflammation of an aging or “degenerating” disc in the spine. Perhaps the most painful symptom of the condition is the reflex spasm that often occurs when your body is attempting to stabilize its inflamed spine. While it may not always be clear that DDD is evident right away, back or neck pain that can last several days or that becomes ongoing can be an early warning sign. Bending over and picking up objects can also spur the related pain. This condition primarily affects people as they age (hence, “degenerative”)—according to the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch, by 50 years old, more than 80 percent of people will start to experience DDD. (But not all will have symptoms at first or at all.)
SI Joint Dysfunction The sacroiliac joint, or “SI joint,” is situated at the base of your lumbar—essentially in the vicinity of your tailbone. It connects your spine to your pelvis. When this joint is irritated or inflamed, it can cause pain in your lumbar and one or both of your legs. Dysfunction can set it in from several causes, but two common
Americans will have back problems at some point during their lifetimes. ones are overdoing lower back movement or lack of activity in your SI joint. Injections are often considered a good way to determine an SI joint dysfunction is present. While SI joint dysfunction can affect anyone, it’s most common in younger to middle-aged females. This is due to pelvic size and hormonal differences between men and women and can be a condition spurred during pregnancy.
Spondylolisthesis When young adults experience lumbar and/or leg pain, one common cause is a slippage of spinal vertebra, causing it to become uneven with the vertebra below it. This is called spondylolisthesis— it’s a condition that can have similar symptoms to other orthopedic conditions but is typically caused by an impact or injury—or spondylolysis. This type of injury can also be quite common among particularly active teenagers—especially student athletes. According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, spondylolysis injuries appear to be most common in athletes with lower-back-heavy movement, such as winter sports, rowing and boxing. If you find yourself or a family member struggling with back pain, remember, Orthopedic Institute’s got your back! To schedule an appointment with one of our spine specialists, call 605-331-5890.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about one in three women in the U.S. give birth by C-section, with the highest rates in high-risk pregnancies. Between 1996 to 2011, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reported a 60 percent increase in C-section rates. And though C-section is a valuable tool for delivery in certain circumstances, the rate at which C-section has been used is higher than organizations, such as the CDC, World Health Organization and ACOG, prefer. Across the country, providers are working diligently to keep C-section rates as low as possible. And Sanford Health has taken many steps that helped successfully achieve this goal.

PARENTING & PREGNANCY
When a mother goes into labor, she doesn’t always plan for a cesarean section.
Reducing the Rate Patient by Patient
Patience in Labor to Achieve Vaginal Birth
“Our C-section rate at Sanford Health for first time moms, also called a primary C-section, is 13.5 to 14.5 percent, and our overall C-section rate is 28 percent. So when you compare that to national numbers, which have a primary C-section rate of 22 percent and an overall C-section rate of 32 percent, we are doing really well,” says Jeanne Hassebroek-Johnson, MD, an OB/GYN at Sanford Health. Many factors contribute to this low rate. From the planning process in the clinic until delivery, OB physicians are doing everything they can to achieve a vaginal birth, including patient education and following set protocols. Dr. Hassebroek-Johnson explains, “We do fewer inductions – medically starting labor as opposed to spontaneous labor – with mom’s having their first baby. The first labor is more difficult to get started, so avoiding induction lowers the C-section rate. We do not perform elective (requested) inductions before 39 weeks. That is actually a national mandate, so we only perform them early when they are medically necessary.”
ACOG’s current guidelines around patient management of labor encourage longer observation times before deciding a woman is in need of a C-section. “Often times, when you think someone is not making progress, if you are patient and wait long enough, they progress without intervention,” says Dr. Hassebroek-Johnson. “We have protocols in place used by physicians and midwives regarding the appropriate progression of labor. So if someone is slowing down in her progress of labor, we use medications to give her every opportunity to dilate before resorting to a C-section.” Dr. Hassebroek-Johnson adds, “As a woman gets tired while pushing, she may request a C-section. We remind her there is a significant benefit to continuing to push. A vaginal delivery has the lowest risk of complication, so we support her in her labor progress.”

prevented. This includes when a baby is in the breech position with the buttocks coming first, there is a fit problem, mom has health risks, or baby has complicating factors that make him or her unable to tolerate labor. For these instances, a C-section is the best option for mom and baby. And while having a C-section may increase a woman’s risk of additional C-sections, this does not mean she can never have a vaginal delivery. Many women are good candidates for vaginal birth after caesarean. “A woman who had her first baby vaginally, but her second had a heart rate dip leading to a C-section would be a perfect candidate,” explains Dr. Hassebroek-Johnson. “She has what we call a ‘proven pelvis,’ so we would really encourage her to try to give birth vaginally. But it depends on the situation. Some women will need a C-section based on risk factors. The decision is based on what is best for mom and baby. If a woman was completely dilated and had ample time to push but could not get the baby out vaginally because of a “fit” problem (baby too big to fit through the pelvis), she has a 15 percent chance of delivering vaginally in a subsequent pregnancy and so a C-section is a better option.” Every moment of pregnancy and labor is dedicated to assessing the best delivery option for that unique situation, with a focus on avoiding unnecessary C-sections. And as Sanford Health and other health care facilities continue to progress and guidelines continue to change, C-section rates should continue to decline across the nation. THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE WONDERFUL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN WE HAVE COME ACROSS THIS MONTH. WE HOPE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE AND ALSO INTRODUCE OTHERS BEING RELEASED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ENJOY. A Christmas for Bear by Bonny Becker One frosty night, Bear hears a tap, tap, tapping on his front door. “Merry Christmas!” cries Mouse. Mouse is there for a Christmas party, and Bear has never had one before, but he’s certain that pickles (preferably from France) must be an essential component, along with the reading of a long and difficult poem. The problem is, whenever Bear comes back from the kitchen with more treats, Mouse has vanished — only to be found, small and gray and guilty-eyed, scurrying under the bed or rifling through the closet. Will there be even a tiny present involved? “Hogwash!” scolds Bear. Get ready for holiday anticipation and the best kind of surprises as the curmudgeonly Bear and a hopeful Mouse return in a warm, funny tale full of holiday cheer and true friendship. Pick a Pine Tree by Patricia Toht Part of the magic of the Christmas season stems from the traditions that families and friends take part in every year: hanging up stockings; putting lights in the windows; and, one of the most important of all, picking out and taking home the Christmas tree. With style and warmth, debut author Patricia Toht and Jarvis, the author-illustrator of Alan’s Big, Scary Teeth, evoke all the rituals of decorating the tree — digging out boxes jam-packed with ornaments and tree trimmings, stringing tinsel, and, at long last, turning on those twinkling lights. Joyously drawn and rhythmically written, this celebration of family, friends, and the holiday season is as merry as the tradition it depicts. Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs Candlewickpress.com
