J

ulie and Scott Ward are life-long pet owners, passionate rescue advocates, and all-around animal lovers, so perhaps it was destiny that life’s journey led them to opening their own business focused on the well-being of pets. Their decision to open an EarthWise Pet Supply store came from their own experience caring for a pet with chronic health issues. “Our dog Toby suffered with irritable bowel and weight issues for over a decade,” says Julie. “We discovered the popular brand of food we were giving him was actually the cause of his health problems.” After trying prescription diets and medications that were still not providing relief, the Wards found EarthWise. “We instantly connected with EarthWise because of their knowledge of nutrition and responsible ingredient sourcing, their commitment to environmental sustainability and their involvement

with pet rescue,” Julie says. “Working with their nutrition experts, we were able to transition Toby to a biologically appropriate diet. After only a week, a new Toby emerged!” She says that week-long transition to the new diet took care of Toby’s tummy troubles, and he soon started to shed the excess weight that just wouldn’t come off before. The miracle came from the right nutrition, and the Wards had found a new calling. Although Toby has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Julie has said this business venture is a great way to honor Toby’s memory. “EarthWise turned Toby’s life around, and now it’s our turn to help other furry friends live their best lives,” says Julie happily. Knowing they had found the right company to bring to Sioux Falls, the next thing on the list for the Wards was finding the right location. Perhaps in a similar way in which they were led to EarthWise,

the stars eventually aligned and brought them to the newly-completed Wedge on Western, a uniquely-shaped retail center near 69th Street and Western. While their business focuses on providing the largest selection of premium pet foods with natural, sourced ingredients, it’s a full-service stop for your four-legged friends. You can find everything from collars to cat nip (a natural variety by From the Field) and from bowls to beds. EarthWise also has state-of-theart self-washing stations. “The self-wash stations have been busy,” says Julie. “They are great for all breeds and all sizes, plus we have all natural, petsafe shampoos and everything else you need for a great bonding experience with your pet. We can also help if there are special health or skin issues.” She adds that they are excited to be offering on-site grooming services starting this month that will also have all natural products in a

safe and comfortable environment. As a company, EarthWise provides a wealth of knowledge and resources when it comes to the pet foods and other products they offer, says Julie. In addition, the company provides flexibility for their local owners to bring in product lines they feel would benefit their customers. “It is such a great environment for us as owners, because we know how incredible the products are that EarthWise promotes, but we can also look for products that meet the needs of our customers or that support local businesses.” For example, the Sioux Falls store will soon be carrying Griff Collars, made locally by a husband and wife team who were inspired by their dog Griffie to create

unique, high-quality collars for dogs. In addition to packaged treats or those available at the store’s Raw Bar (which dogs will love!), Julie says they will carry tasty, healthy treats that are baked locally. While they were working on finishing the inside of the store – and still missing their Toby – the Wards experienced more sadness with the loss of their dog Duncan. In a way, though, opening EarthWise has been a healing experience for Julie and Scott. “The community has been so welcoming, and it is so heartwarming to meet all of the people and their pets who have already come through our doors,” says Julie. If you follow their Facebook page, you will note that these four-legged and twolegged customers are often humorously

referred to as doggos and their hoomans. “I think we could play ‘Dog Bingo’ with all of the different breeds we see,” she adds, “including some I have never seen before like the Italian Spinone and Rhodesian Ridgeback. Every day brings a new furry friend into our lives.” Going through this business adventure as husband and wife has been a unique experience, Julie says. “Scott and I have different work styles, but somehow it works. It is definitely as much work as everyone says it is to have your own business! But, to meet all of the people and their pets, and to know we are providing them with products that help their pets live their best lives makes it all worthwhile.”

Paws Pet Resort Now Open BY MARY MICHAELS | PHOTOS BY JULIE PRAIRIE PHOTOGRAPHY

O

ne of the most stressful aspects of being a pet owner is deciding where your furry friend should stay when you are going to be away from home. A local business owner hopes to not only reduce that “separation stress,” but also give pet owners something they can really feel good about. Paws Pet Resort recently opened in Sioux Falls, and this 10,000-square-foot resort provides doggy daycare, fencedin play areas, grooming services and pet boarding and one other important feature – supporting important charity work.

Owner Jeanine Hoff Lubben says this was truly a calling, saying she and her husband, Vince, felt led to incorporate a spirit of giving and service to the business. “This was more than just a business idea that popped into my head,” she says. “A few years ago, I heard about a company called Hot Sauce 4 Good in New Jersey that started with the purpose of giving away funds to charitable causes. I’ve kept that in the back of my mind ever since. I kept thinking that was something I could do, to start a business with a bigger purpose.” To learn more about operating a kennel,

Lubben toured sites in Omaha and the Twin Cities, and she also participated in job shadowing so she could learn more about daily operations. One of the most important steps she took was to hire a manager with 15 years of experience in the industry before she even started the design process. Paws Pet Resort will donate to three charities. The first is Sioux Fallsbased Mission Haiti, which supports ministry, medical care, schools and more for the people of Haiti. Lubben has handson experience with the organization,

making several trips to Haiti as part of mission teams. The second beneficiary is Partners Worldwide, which offers micro-loans to people who want to start their own businesses in third-world countries. The third charity will be a rotating slot for various organizations that will be identified on a quarterly basis. For this opening quarter, two charities have been designated – the Sioux Falls Humane Society and B-Squad, which has been assisting rescues on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations to relocate unwanted, abandoned, injured, or abused

dogs to partner rescues in neighboring states. Lubben says they carefully considered every detail during the building process to ensure the best environment possible. The kennel rooms are sealed to avoid any transfer of diseases or other issues, and she adds the facility has a top-notch HVAC system and cleaning service. They offer 80 boarding units for dogs and 10 “condos” for cats. In addition, there are several VIP suites (“Very Important Pups”), with a comfy bed on the ground floor and a second-floor ledge with an outside view and television on the walls.

The VIP suites also have PetCams that allow owners to watch, talk to and even give treats to their pet. When you come to the resort for the first time, Lubben says there is a meetand-greet to introduce customers’ dogs to her own dogs to see how they interact. She adds that the resort offers PetDetect, an identification system with printed, breakaway collars that are personalized with the pet’s name, phone number, medications or other important information. “We take every precaution to keep our furry friends safe,” she says.

During their stay, dogs get to play in both indoor and outdoor recreation areas. There is even an outdoor pool shaped like a dog bone. And, for those who do better one-on-one instead of playing in group settings, the staff provides individual care and attention. Pet owners can add on a variety of amenities for their pet’s stay, from special snacks or pool time to outdoor walks or individualized play time. For their doggy daycare, which is

available from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., Lubben says they asked dog behavior experts to design daycare sessions that feature indoor and outdoor play, naps, and snacks, all in small group sizes. Dogs have their own space to relax, as well as their own food and water bowls to reduce the spread of viruses. In addition to boarding and day-care services, the facility works with Glamour Paws for on-site grooming. That business also offers mobile grooming services.

All of the forms necessary for reserving a space at Paws Pet Resort are available on their website. There is also a great “FAQ” section to answer any questions you might have, and if you are wondering about the facility or any of their services, you can stop in for a tour any time during the open lobby hours. “I just want to be a blessing to our employees, the pets and the organizations we serve.”

he year, just past, 2017, is already being regarded as the year when abuse and sexual assault against women— for decades hidden from the public eye— were brought out into the open and the men accused of such wrongs identified and dealt with, losing their jobs, wounding their reputations, and sometimes costing them fines and even jail sentences. Women by the dozens were encouraged to tell their accounts of being abused. It was, by any measure, a watershed year, and it now seems a good time to inquire into how this sea change came about, and more particularly, what South Dakota’s role was in this matter. While the revelations coming last year gave the impression that these changes came about overnight, anybody acquainted with the subject knows that the struggle against sexual assault and domestic abuse was a long one. Less than a century has passed since women attained the right to vote, and that momentous change came only after decades of struggle. Before that came the right of women to attain a divorce, and since domestic abuse is so often tied in with alcohol consumption, it seems natural that the campaigns of anti-alcohol advocates such as Carry A. Nation culminated in prohibition during the same year that women’s suffrage became recognized, 1920. Thanks to very lenient residency laws in Dakota Territory—90 days, plus seven more weeks for publication and 30 more days to allow the defendant to answer— Sioux Falls and other cities became destinations for those seeking divorces. Things changed

slightly after South Falls became a state in 1890, but not so much as to scare away “Dakota Divorcees.” Until 1908, those seeking to split with their spouses needed to maintain residency for only six months altogether, and various dodges were frequently used to cut down that time even further. The right to sue for divorce was closely tied to the fight against domestic abuse. “I do not consider divorce an evil by any means,” wrote Susan B. Anthony. “It is just as much a refuge for women married to brutal men as Canada was to the slaves of brutal masters.” Thus, divorce became an important factor in the women’s movement, although it was Hailed as a “Temple of Liberty” by those who saw South strongly countered by politicians Dakota’s lenient divorce laws as an antidote to domestic and religious leaders who regarded violence, the Minnehaha County Courthouse at 6th holy matrimony as beyond and Main saw up to an estimated 100 divorces per year reproach. Susan B. Anthony, a leader of the women’s movement of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, regarded divorce as a means of freeing women from brutal husbands. The national discussion spurred by “divorce colonies” such as Sioux Falls led to more empathy for battered wives, but sexual aggression and abuse continued in and out of marriage until the present day.

as chattel,” and the word “obey” in the marriage ceremony was held as to strictly apply to the wife. Working-class wives, with no income they could call their own, had little recourse; they simply suffered whatever blows or curses their husbands threw at them. Later in the century, of course, institutions such as Children’s Inn and the education of police and other authorities in handling domestic violence offered refuge and hope for abused wives. In her book Divorce: An American Tradition, Glenda Riley questions estimates that Sioux Falls courts processed a hundred or more divorces a year during those times. Statistics were complicated by the practice of withholding notices for those who wished to avoid publicity, but the perception of the city as a divorce colony, first proposed by Charles H. Craig, editor of the Sioux Falls Daily News, was augmented by out-oftown journalists such as George Fitch, who claimed in the American Magazine that the city was adorned with ”corpulent homes built from the proceeds of the divorce industry.” Other accounts focused on the celebrities who made the city a temporary home, such as Baroness Margaret Laura De Stuers and Mary Nevins Blaine. But the more Sioux Falls embraced such epithets as “Mecca for the

“The light of a grateful God” seems to illuminate this portrait of Episcopal Bishop William Hobart Hare, most prominent opponent of Sioux Falls’ lenient divorce laws at the turn of the 20th Century.

mismated,” the more opponents of divorce stomped and snorted their objections. William Hobart Hare had been originally called to Dakota Territory to minister to Native Americans, and he remained their defender well after his founding All Saints School and after his becoming Episcopal Bishop. But it was to be his campaign against the “divorce business” that he was to be perhaps most remembered. He claimed in sermons and in written proclamations that lenient divorcee laws were leading the nation to embrace what amounted to “consecutive polygamy.” His views found many adherents, and by 1908 the state was ready to vote on the issue. The revision passed comfortably in the legislature, and the referendum changing the residency for divorce to one year gained two-to-one approval. The new law took effect on January of 1909. Bishop Hare died in October of the same year. Whatever the real economic effect the “divorce colony days” had upon the city of Sioux Falls, the national discussion about divorce spurred by the state’s short residency requirements went far in making people aware of the argument women activists had for lenient divorcee laws. However, those arguments seemed to have little effect on chauvinist and sometimes brutal

behavior of men towards women, in or out of marriage. One hundred years after the divorce controversy in South Dakota ended, the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Matt Lauer were plying their nefarious sexual practices unknown. What eventually brought their misdeeds to light was when the unsolvable “he said, she said,” became “he said, she said, she said, she said, she said. she said, ad infinitum.” The #Me Too movement demonstrated that the quantity of allegations offset tactics such as paying wounded women to remain silent or simply denying individual complaints. What caused more and more women to speak up about their mistreatment? Next month we will explore the proposition that the growing number of women journalists may have helped to create a more comfortable milieu in which women might confront their tormentors. And we will cite some of the women journalists who have got their start in Sioux Falls. Ron Robinson taught English and journalism at Augustana College for some 35 years. BUILDING A

Dream Home BY MARY MICHAELS | PHOTOS BY JULIE PRAIRIE PHOTOGRAPHY

ne of the greatest debates experienced by someone considering a move is “to buy” versus “to build.” It took nearly two years of looking at existing homes to bring one Sioux Falls homeowner to the conclusion that building was going to be the best option. Features on her wish list included a large kitchen and master bath, an open floor plan, two or three bedrooms and a nice outdoor living space. However, existing houses either had more bedrooms than she needed or were older homes needing significant updating.

So, the homeowner turned to the internet to do a little research about designing and building a home. Somewhere along the line while talking with builders about how to come up with a plan that would satisfy the wish list, she heard about 4D Design in Sioux Falls and set up a meeting. 4D asked her to complete a series of questionnaires about house features and style preferences, where she noted a desire for a great room with vaulted ceilings and large windows, fireplaces in various indoor and outdoor spaces, a deck accessible from the kitchen and master bedroom and a zero entry

(no steps) from the garage into the house. After the questionnaires were complete, the 4D team presented three design options, and the homeowner picked the one closest to her vision, and then the team continued to tweak the plan along the way until it was exactly what she wanted. One of those “tweaks” was the unique staircase to the lower level.

“I wanted something special for the staircase,” says the homeowner, “so they came up with the idea of a curved staircase leading downstairs, and that curve became the back of the built-in dining room bench on the upper level.” The next step was to find a builder. However, bids for the project were coming back over budget. Just as the homeowner was ready

to shelve the whole plan, a friend suggested Chris George from George Custom Homes. At the first meeting, the homeowner expressed concerns about being able to stay within the budget while trying to make this dream home a reality. George presented ideas for trimming the budget while still including the most important items from her wish list, and at the second meeting,

George included his wife April to assist with interior design decisions. That was the icing on the cake for the homeowner. Now all she needed was a location. Wanting to stay on the east side of Sioux Falls in a smaller neighborhood, the homeowner connected with a developer that assisted in the search for a lot that would accommodate both the home design and the budget.

With all three major components in place, construction started in May 2017 and was completed a week before Christmas. The relationship with Chris and April George was a highlight for the homeowner, who says that you need open communication and realistic expectations with your builder. For example, Chris thought of little changes to the plans along the way that created efficiencies and improved appearances that only come with years of experience.

IRISH

FOR JUST ONE DAY BY JIM MATHIS

L

et me start by saying I am not Irish. Mostly Welsh and German, and like most American mutts, I’m sure there are several other nationalities sprinkled in my family tree. But to the best of my knowledge, there’s no Irish. However, like many Americans, for one day in March, I put on a green sweater and celebrate my faux-Irish heritage. On Saint Patrick’s Day we can all be Irish, regardless of our DNA. In my younger and wilder days, I would gather with a group

of friends early in the day for eggs and corned beef hash before heading downtown for the parade. There we would crowd into bars, drink too much unnaturally-green beer and regret our actions on the morning of March 18. Now I’m more likely to raise a glass of Guinness in the comfort of my own home. For some reason, the idea of drinking a gallon of beer laced with food coloring no longer holds any appeal to me. Perhaps it’s the memory of those pain-filled mornings after.

Forgive me for focusing on beverages, but St. Patrick’s Day is often cited as one of the top drinking days of the year, so it seems natural. And since we’re talking about drinking, let’s look at whiskey. The whiskeys from the Emerald Isle are not nearly as celebrated as those from Scotland, but they should not be overlooked. After all, it is believed the word whiskey has its origins in Ireland. The Gaelic phrase “uisge beatha” literally means “water of life.” Then the Scots borrowed the phrase and changed it to “usquebaugh,” before the English shortened that to “whiskey.” A discussion of Irish whiskey generally leads to the two big names; Jameson and Bushmills. Now if you’re a good Irish lad or lass, this is an easy choice determined not by taste but by religion. You see Jameson is from Dublin, and if the roots of your family

etc. for her | March 2018 41

tree are in Dublin, chances are you are Catholic. But Bushmills, while it is a fine whiskey, is distilled in Northern Ireland and that means Protestant. Put another way, Irish Catholics often say that whiskeys from the North “are filtered through the wrong bible.” Order the wrong brand in a stubbornly patriotic Irish bar and you might end up in fight. Who knew ordering a drink could cause such a ruckus? I don’t want to start any battles, so I’ll just call it Irish whiskey and let you decide which brand (and church) will make yours. Thanks to my Dear Old Dad, I developed a taste for whiskey on the rocks. I will occasionally drink it neat (that is to say straight up) but I find an ice cube or two will tame the even the harshest whiskey. However I have learned from my beloved to enjoy Irish whiskey with ginger ale. I’ve seen it called a Big Ginger, a Phlump, a Classy Irishman, or simply a Jameson and Ginger. Call it what you like, it’s a simple cocktail to make and a great alternative to a boring rum and Coke. As a nice upgrade from Canada Dry, give Q Brand ginger ale a try, it’s got a nice bright ginger taste without being too sweet. I like to add a dash of Angostura Bitters for an extra dimension. But I digress, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t all about drinking, it is also the time when everyone makes corned beef and cabbage, just exactly the way their Irish forbearers didn’t. That’s right; the corned beef we all associate with this distinctly Irish holiday isn’t a big deal in Ireland. Back in the motherland, they probably would have eaten bacon and cabbage and their pork in the dish would have been

more like what we call Canadian bacon. Confused? When the Irish immigrants got to this side of the pond, they simple couldn’t afford the more expensive pork, so they substituted cheaper salted and cured cuts of beef. And the tradition was born, not out of heritage, but necessity. So where would Irish Americans get their corned beef? From a good Jewish delicatessen, of course, because that culture has been kosher curing beef brisket for centuries. While corned beef and cabbage get all the glory this time of year, it’s not the only meal with Gaelic roots. A rich shepherd’s pie is just about the perfect comfort food and if you want to make it special for the holiday, throw a little Guinness in the gravy. Add a couple of slices of soda bread with caraway seeds and currants and you have a bona fide Irish feast. I think this year, we’ll head down to watch the parade, but when the young (and young and heart) move inside for a green-tinted Miller Lite, we’ll head for home and stay out of the fray. On the way home, we will pick up a few pints of dark, rich extra stout beer to go with a savory lamb stew. After dinner, we’ll tip back a wee bit of Irish whiskey, (mine on the rocks, hers with ginger ale) and remember that underneath our green sweaters, we’re just a Welsh boy married to a Scandinavian girl. And we’ll pretend we’re Irish for just one day. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When he’s not eating and drinking Jim runs, ADwërks and advertising agency in Downtown Sioux Falls.

The French Paradox BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

I

am not a doctor. Let’s make that clear from the very start. I’ve been called the Wine Doctor, the Restaurant Doctor, and, once in a college, the Doctor of Love. But I am not a Medical Doctor; this has to be said because contained in this article are some medical facts about the phenomenon known as The French Paradox, which is related to the effects of wine on our bodies. So what is this French Paradox all about? Despite the generally high intake of saturated fat in the French diet, only 7 percent of French adults are obese. Neuroscientist Will Clower, who lived in France for two years and wrote The Fat Fallacy: The French Diet Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss, observed that when Americans go over there to live, they lose weight, and when the French come to the US to live, they gain weight. The French drink lots of wine, eat baguettes, croissants, butter, cream, fatty liver pate, pastry, and cheese - a sure recipe for weight gain, isn’t it? So why are their rates of obesity and heart disease much lower than the USA?

Here are the factors involved: 1. Red wine Red wine is probably the most known French Paradox contributor. Some scientists believe the French habit of moderate red wine drinking with a meal is the key. Antioxidants called flavonoids, natural chemical compounds found in red wine, may promote health benefits to the heart and blood vessels. Red grapes are one of the richest sources of flavonoids, which may make red wine more heart-healthy than white wine or other spirits. However, research indicates that red grape juice is markedly less potent than wine in conferring health benefits. It is suggested that something in the winemaking process changes the polyphenols’ properties. Red Wine Facts • Moderate consumption of red wine on a regular basis may be a preventative against coronary heart disease. • It produces anticlotting action. • It may prevent the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. • Red wine intake reduces the risk of kidney stone formation. • With or without alcohol, red wine decreases harmful effects of smoking on endothelium.

piling a number of foods on the fork at once. It takes the brain about 15-20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. So when you slow down with smaller bites, you taste food more and are satisfied with less. 3. Small portion size Partly, the French Paradox can be explained by the fact that French portion sizes are notably smaller than American portions. If you like what you eat, it doesn’t mean you have to eat a lot of it. Although the French diet is rich in butter, cream, pastry and cheese, the research demonstrates they consume fewer calories, resulting in decreased numbers of overweight and obese people. 4. High intake of fruits and vegetables The important constituent of the French Paradox seems to be the diet rich in fruits and fresh vegetables carrying fiber and vitamins. Epidemiologic studies show that high fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease mortality. 5. Food quality over quantity Open-air markets are very popular in France, and it is customary for people to buy their produce there. It is common for the French to buy cheese from the fromagerie, bread from the bakery, meat from the boucherie, and fruits and vegetables from the open-air market. It is more time-consuming and sometimes more expensive than at the grocery store, but the products are fresher and of better quality.

. Pat rick’s Day! reen for St G o G

2. Slow eating Joy is a wonderful anti-aging trick, isn’t it? The French enjoy and savor their food. They tend to taste foods individually rather than

Frozen sections in French grocery stores are much smaller than in the USA. The market for prepared food is not very large and TV dinners do not reside in the French diet. 6. Homemade food The French eating culture is fundamentally different than the American one. Most people have 3 meals a day, families eat together when they can, and food is important culturally. Home cooking provides a better control of food, and reduces preservatives, trans fat, sugar, and salt consumption. 7. Self-discipline The French are more weight aware and have a culture of caution after a period of excess. Eating more one day makes them be more careful the next. They would rather trade off with a few lighter meals, than dieting. 8. “No snacking” habit The French tend to snack much less than Americans, instead, they try to eat more regularly. If they do snack, the French often choose fresh fruits between meals. 9. Beverages: water vs. sodas Beverage preferences also come into play. French drink a lot of bottled water instead of sodas. More and more different kinds of waters are launched every year on French market.

10. Walking - “naturally active” life The French aren’t prone to rushing to the gym; however, they are more physically active by simply walking a lot. Daily walking is part of French people lifestyle. Their streets are walker friendly and are full of pedestrians, because many people use cars only for longer travels. Driving to a nearby food store would be considered ridiculous. People, especially in cities, walk or use public transportation because a car would just get you stuck in traffic. They have to climb the long flights of metro stairs. The French Paradox is more than just the protective nature of the red wine or lower intake of calories. It’s a culture of being physically active, savoring reasonable portions of healthy foods with the addition of small amounts of high-fat foods for flavor, and a philosophy of balance and moderation. If you ever want to talk more about adopting this lifestyle, please contact me and we can enjoy a small meal and a glass of red wine together. Carpe le Vin! “If you’ve spoken with your doctor and have been told there are no other treatments for you, consider a clinical trial. Clinical trials offer the latest in medical advancements for urinary incontinence and research is developing new ways to use Botox. Clinical trials are the safest and fastest way to discover new treatments and help improve health care for future generations of women with the same condition.”

t might surprise you that as many as six out of 10 women live with some form of urinary incontinence. Many women suffer in silence, mistakenly convinced that it’s an untreatable symptom, but urinary incontinence isn’t something a patient should just live with. No matter how much you unintentionally urinate, you should talk to your doctor about treatment options to manage it. There are two commons types of urine incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence refers to bladder leakage that happens when you’re moving or being active. The pressure on your bladder when you exercise, sneeze or cough causes urine to escape through weakened pelvic floor muscles. Age, weight, pregnancy and childbirth can all play a role in weakening pelvic muscles. Treatment options for stress incontinence include losing weight and physical therapy. A third treatment option is to have a same-day surgical procedure for a sling device that is 90 percent effective and endorsed by several national medical organizations. Getting one of these devices only requires a half-inch incision and patients resume normal activities the next day.

Urge incontinence, also known as an overactive bladder, causes patients to feel an urgent, immediate need to go to the bathroom. If you know where every bathroom is located when you leave your house, this may be a sign that you’ve been experiencing urge incontinence. Aging, diabetes and smoking can all play a factor in developing this condition. Current treatments for urge incontinence are offered in a tiered approach. First your doctor will recommend that you change certain behaviors, like avoiding food irritants and watching how much you drink and when. If lifestyle changes don’t alleviate your symptoms, there are medications to control the bladder. More advanced therapies include the use of Botox®, an injection that can help relax the bladder and hold in urine. If you’ve spoken with your doctor and have been told there are no other treatments for you, consider a clinical trial. Clinical trials offer the latest in medical advancements for urinary incontinence and research is developing new ways to use Botox. Clinical trials are the safest and fastest way to discover new treatments and help improve health care for future generations of women with the same condition.

he month of March is a significant one for the city of Boston, Massachusetts. The Saint Patrick’s Day holiday brings the people who live there a very good reason to celebrate their Irish heritage with many events and activities they are proud to be a part of. The city comes alive with parties, pub crawls, performances, parades, and more. Boston has a large Irish-American population and culture, with history on every corner. According to a recent U.S. Census, it is the most Irish of all American cities, with nearly

The most famous part of the holiday in Boston is the annual South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the biggest in the country. This year, the parade takes place on Sunday, March 18. The St. Patrick’s Day 5K Road Race kicks off just a couple of hours before the big parade starts, with about 1,750 runners participating. This race started back in 1940, and has been a tradition ever since. A live concert by Rad Youth Rock-Pop Band

Gourmet Coffee for some of the best fresh brewed coffee around. Choose from over 100 flavors, or try one of their Raspberry Lime Rickeys or a home cooked breakfast sandwich before the parade festivities officially begin. Then find a decent spot to watch the marching bands, floats, and of course, to simply people-watch in the large and entertaining crowd that is sure to gather. activity in Boston over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. It takes walkers to more than 20 historic landmarks in the city, including statues, monuments, and buildings. Celebrating the contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants over the past 300 years, the trail starts at the beautiful Rose Kennedy Rose Garden and continues for more than three miles across Downtown Boston and Back Bay, then ends at Fenway Park. Another way to enrich your brain while in the area is a tour at the JFK Museum and Library in Dorchester. A special exhibit here includes documents and footage of President Kennedy’s relationship with Ireland.

Don’t forget to check out some performances and sports events while visiting Boston. If you get the opportunity to see a game with the Boston Celtics on the court or the Boston Bruins on the ice, March is the best month to do it while the team spirit is the strongest ever. The Celtics mascot is Lucky the Leprechaun, after all! The 4-day Boston Irish Film Festival has celebrated Irish culture on the big screen since the late 1990s, and offers screenings at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. More than 3,000 fans attend this film series, which showcases the best contemporary

Celebrate the holiday in true style by enjoying Irish and Celtic music, dance, and storytelling in A St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn with famed radio host Brian O’Donovan at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, or watch Irish step dancers and bagpipers perform at Fanueil Hall. Every year, Boston’s favorite Celtic punk rock group, the Dropkick Murphys, perform concerts on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. They traditionally play six shows total, with four shows at the House of Blues, one show at Agannis Arena, and one at a secret, yet-to-be-announced location. Live music and

performances such as dance, theater and poetry are also available to enjoy at local breweries like Aeronaut Brewery in Somerville, which hosts a weekend-long cultural celebration, or Harpoon Brewery in South Boston Waterfront, which kicks off their 2018 St. Patrick’s Day Festival with a 2-day beer fest featuring a large selection of beers along with their handmade pretzels and food. Boston has a huge variety of Irish pubs to choose from, with some of them being the best in the world, outside of Ireland. Hop on a pub crawl for an experience at some of the best Irish pubs in the city. It won’t be hard to get a true taste of Ireland while you are enjoying all of the live entertainment, and don’t be surprised if you hear plenty of Irish accents in the meantime. Try Lansdowne Pub, which features St. Patrick’s Day Week, with all-day live music, plenty of Guinness, and a lot of delicious food. Popular orders include the Irish Scrambler, and house-made Bangers and Mash. In Somerville, everybody loves The Burren, which was opened by a pair of Irish musicians and honors its roots by featuring live traditional Irish music every night. Plenty of corned beef and Shamrock Cake will compliment the Guinness beef stew on their menu. The Black Rose is dedicated to Irish dining, with a “Pint of Guinness” offered as an appetizer. Located next to Faneuil Hall, this popular restaurant offers music any night of the week, and favorite menu items include the Shepherd’s Pie and the Irish Breakfast with black and white pudding.

Leprechaun Handprint Materials:

Orange, peach, white, and black paint, paint brush, white, green, black, and yellow construction paper, scissors, and glue. Instructions: Paint your child’s fingers with orange paint, then cover their palm with peach paint. Carefully press their hand down onto a piece of white construction paper. Once dry, use the paint brush to add some orange paint to the bottom of the hand print. This will be the leprechaun’s hair. Use a small amount of white and black paint for the eyes, then add a nose and mouth with some more black paint. Once the hand is dried completely, cut out a green top hat, a black rectangle, and a yellow buckle from construction paper, and glue them together to create the leprechaun’s hat. Add this on top of the upside-down handprint, and your little guy is finished!

Mess-Free Rainbow Materials: Paint in the colors of the rainbow, white paper, plastic wrap, and tape. Instructions: Tape down a strip of plastic wrap to a hard surface, then lay down a piece of white paper. Place a good glob of paint in each color of the rainbow all in a row on the left side of the paper. Carefully cover the top of the paper and paint with more plastic wrap, and tape it down well enough so it won’t move when your child starts to paint. Next, have your child use their hand and help them press down to create a rainbow by moving the paint globs to the right side of the paper. The amount and the thickness of the paint you use will make a difference in how easily a rainbow is created. You also want to make sure to put enough pressure down when moving the paint from left to write. This is a great way to encourage your child to get creative without the mess!

Instructions: From black construction paper, cut out the shape of a pot of gold, then glue it to the bottom left corner of a piece of white paper. Have your child lightly dip their finger tip in red paint, then press it down beginning at the left side of the top of the pot of gold. Continue doing this until you’ve created the shape of a semi-circle, which will be the top of your rainbow. Keep doing this using orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple until you have a rainbow coming out from the pot of gold. Use green paint to create small fingerprint four-leaf clovers as accents surrounding your rainbow.

Instructions: Paint your child’s hands with green paint, then press them down, trying to angle them out towards the corners. Do this one more time on the opposite side of the first set of hand prints, creating what looks like a four leaf clover. Add a green stem with a paintbrush and let dry completely. PARENTING & PREGNANCY

A

s a first-time expecting mother, I’m very cautious, especially when it comes to what I eat. Don’t get me wrong, I indulge in those typical pregnancy cravings, but it’s all about balance. I am committed to eating healthy lunches so when those late-night ice cream cravings hit, I don’t feel so bad. My baby’s receiving ample vitamins and minerals from my meal choices earlier in the day. When it comes to healthy meals, I make it a priority to plan ahead. Meal prepping is the key to being successful. Not that many expecting moms want to get up and cook a chicken breast before the 8 a.m. work grind – and I’m certainly in that camp – hence my planning. I have found a lot of success by preparing my grocery list and shopping on late Sunday mornings, followed by meal prep those afternoons. A typical grocery list for my lunch needs will include protein, fruits, vegetables and fats. My favorite protein is chicken, so most of the time I’ll buy bulk frozen chicken breasts, a variety of bananas, strawberries and apples, some carrots, broccoli or celery for my vegetables and then add humus, peanut butter or ranch for dipping as my fat. My prep work consists of washing and cutting the fruits and vegetables and cooking the chicken. Portioning my lunches is also a conscious decision I make when prepping meals. After cooking, I check to see the chicken breast I packaged is roughly the size of my palm. The raw fruits and vegetables are portioned into half- or 1-cup servings and the fats are properly portioned into these convenient 2-ounce containers

I have. So when meal time strikes during my work day, I simply walk to the break room, heat up my protein and I’m set: I enjoy lunch knowing my meal is properly portioned. I’ve also committed to eating healthy snacks throughout the day, and I can prep those snacks right along with my lunches on Sundays. I typically have mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks of almonds, a protein bar or additional fruits and vegetables. Another way I stay committed to having a healthy pregnancy is by drinking a lot of water, especially between meals. I’ve never had a problem fulfilling the daily water recommendations, so being pregnant and having to drink a little more hasn’t been an issue. Knowing that giving up a few hours every Sunday will help me keep myself and my baby healthy is worthwhile. It’s really rewarding knowing I’m giving my baby the proper nutrition he needs to grow big and strong!

Here are some other quick tips I have learned over the last few months: • Plan ahead by getting your grocery shopping done before the work week starts. • Prep and portion properly every time – consistency counts! • Eat a variety of proteins, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. • Pack healthy snack options to have between meals. • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep you and baby hydrated.

What will Baby find inside it the next morning? Ages 0 mos - 3 yrs candlewickpress.com

And this year she’s got one thing on her mind: the perfect prank she’s going to play on Mr. Todd, thanks to an awesome present from her brother, Stink. Gotcha, Mr. Todd! But in all the excitement over spaghetti trees, April fish, and fools’ errands, Judy worries that something else will be forgotten by Mr. Todd and Class 3T altogether: April 1 also happens to be Judy’s birthday! Gulp! Will her friends remember in time, or will Judy be the fool this year? And just what might Mr. Todd have up his sleeve? Ages 4 yrs - 6 yrs candlewickpress.com

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

Peep and Ducky Rainy Day by David Martin When Peep visits Ducky on a rainy day, the little friends have no trouble finding things to do. Inside, there’s a tent to build and a pillow fight to be had. And outside, with the help of galoshes and umbrella, it’s fun to captain a boat — until a whoosh of wind and a clap of thunder send them running back in! Perfectly tuned to a toddler sensibility, this exuberant tale will enchant both listener and reader. Ages 0 mos - 3 yrs candlewickpress.com

Walk and See: ABC This elegant alphabet board book will teach little ones all about nature. The talented Rosalind Beardshaw’s beautiful illustrations and visual storytelling follow two children on a day in the countryside, bringing a narrative feel to this simple book for very young readers. The first in a series of seasonal concept books, this is a board book to visit again and again. Ages 0 mos - 3 yrs candlewickpress.com

They Didn’t Teach THIS in Worm School! by Simone Lia Marcus is a worm, and a bird named Laurence who looks very much like a chicken is about to eat him for breakfast. So what does Marcus do? He strikes up a conversation, of course! But even after talking his way out of being eaten, Marcus’s troubles are just beginning: soon he is clinging to Laurence’s neck as the designated navigator on an absurd journey to Kenya, where his feathered companion dreams of finding happiness with other flamingos like himself. Except Marcus can’t actually read a map, and this bird is clearly not a flamingo. Will Marcus be able to get them both to Africa — or even manage to survive the day? Filled with kid-friendly illustrations, this is a buddy comedy that will have readers wriggling with laughter. Ages 7 yrs - 9 yrs candlewickpress.com

Gift Boxes to Decorate and Make: Easter To make the springtime gift boxes in this book, tear out a page, color the beautiful black-andwhite designs of birds, blossoms, and bunnies, and then fold! Get creative with your color scheme or use traditional colors from nature. Either way, this fantastic book of easy-toassemble boxes will ensure your Easter gifts are truly special. Ages 8 yrs - 12 yrs candlewickpress.com

Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up by Sally M. Walker In a stunning combination of haiku and impressionistic (but accurate) art, this one-of-a-kind book encourages readers to think playfully about our planet and its wondrous processes. Sibert Medal– winning author Sally M. Walker covers Earth’s many marvels — fossilized skeletons of plants and animals, terrific volcanic eruptions, the never-ending hydrologic cycle — in sometimes straightforward, sometimes metaphoric three-line haikus. Expertly drawn art by William Grill, author-illustrator of Shackleton’s Journey, provides a visual reference for each poem. In clear and creative back matter, Walker and Grill further use their skills to provide additional detailed explanations for the science behind each concept. A unique, artistic intersection of poetry and science, Earth Verse is sure to enthrall any and all readers interested in the world around them. Ages 7 yrs - 9 yrs candlewickpress.com

Make and Play: Easter Press out the die-cut bunnies, chicks, and lambs in this activity book and assemble an eyecatching Easter display. The book also includes Easter activities, songs, and recipes! Ages 3 yrs - 7 yrs candlewickpress.com
