here are songs about coffee. Movies and television shows have memorable moments set in coffee shops. People at work take a coffee break. There are quotes about coffee, like “A bad day with coffee is better than a good day without it.” And now, there’s a new spot downtown Sioux Falls for you to grab “a cuppa joe.” The Source opened earlier this year in the Jones 421 building on the north end

of Phillips Avenue and not only features top-notch coffee that is roasted locally, but also has a taproom with signature craft beers. It’s a unique combination to be sure, but it all comes together well in this newly designed, mixed-use building. While it is a new addition to the downtown scene, The Source has longstanding roots in Dakota Coffee Roasters, more commonly known to Sioux Falls

residents as the java served at the former Black Sheep Coffeeshop. Owner Kristin Chau saw an opportunity when Black Sheep’s former location was torn down as part of new development happening on West 12th Street. It was a chance to refresh their brand while still providing the coffee that Black Sheep fans came to love. Rather than the eclectic look of

Black Sheep, The Source has a modern, industrial feel. The inspiration came from Chau’s sister, Haley Rogers, who is the owner and designer for HR Interior Design. Creating the business was a family affair, as the ownership team also includes Chau’s husband and her parents. And, the family had a hand in building the wooden tables for the new space. Even with all of the updated features, a

very special piece of Black Sheep Coffee moved downtown – the original roasting machine. The coffee beans are sourced from the same locations and roasted in the same way. A source of pride for the Dakota Coffee Roasters has always been their commitment to quality as they develop different roast profiles for their customers. In addition to taking advantage of an

opportunity to update the brand and the physical design, Chau created a new facet to the business that complements the growing residential and entertainment options in downtown Sioux Falls. The Source incorporated a taproom that features the iPourIt system of self-serve beer and cider taps. The process is simple. In return for a debit or credit card, patrons receive an

RFID card that becomes their tab. They can then proceed to the tap wall and choose from the variety of selections picked by the owners, and they pay by the ounce. While this allows patrons to skip lines and try a number of artisan brews, employees are trained to ensure

responsible consumption. Chau says guests should be on the lookout for specials and fun events like happy hours, bottomless mimosas and entertainment. All events are posted on their website and Facebook page. Hearing that The Source was a new

evolution for Dakota Coffee Roasters was welcome news to Black Sheep fans. And, the owners are grateful for their customers’ support over the years. Feeling deeply connected to the Sioux Falls community, they are excited to continue providing a place of gathering and friendship.

One off Sondheim’s most popular works, INTO THE WOODS is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales. In a musical form, it follows the classic tales Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and a Baker and his wife who learn they cannot have a

child because of a Witch’s curse, so the two go on a journey to break the curse. Each character is on a quest to fulfill a wish, and, while everyone’s wish is granted, the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. INFO (605) 331-6631.

THEY PAVED THE WAY

The women whose work in communications set the stage for the abundance of women in the field today. BY RON ROBINSON

f she hadn’t been so dead-set on becoming a journalist, Alice might have become a member of the band. As it was, Alice Bower had it in mind to become a writer and believed that a job with a newspaper might be the way to squeeze into the writer’s life. She taught for a while, and then got one of the only entry-level

positions open to women and in newspapers in those days: she learned to set type. The job required the ability—since most printing had not progressed much past Gutenberg in Dakota Territorial days—to read print inverted, upside down and backwards. She was so good at it that she set type for two publications a week, The Vermillion

Standard and the Dakota Republican. But she did not want to set type forever. For one thing, she abhorred tobacco and alcohol, the stuff that seemed to fuel her co-workers: “Drinking and chewing have been the greatest trouble with which I have had to contend since I became a printer and it will be four years next Saturday that I first took

After moving from Pennsylvania to St. Cloud, MN, Jane Swissholm took on the slave owners from the south who had moved into the area before the war. Some retaliated by invading her offices and throwing her printing press into the Mississippi River.

up the stick.” (Letter to Joseph Gossage.) The “stick” is of course the printer’s stick, essential to setting up columns of type. The setter would grab the necessary type from the type case and fit it into the stick to make columns of type. It is said that efficient typesetters could place type as fast as others could write the words, and it was possible to write while type-setting—a practice not uncommon among frontier journalists. Composing is what Alice really wanted, and it was the marriage proposal from Joseph Gossage, a young newspaper editor from Rapid City, that promised that reward. Joe neither used tobacco nor drank, which helped to qualify him for husbandhood, and after a two-year courtship, in 1882, she said yes. Together the young couple began a little four-page paper first known as the Black Hills Weekly Journal. When Joe fell ill, Alice took over as publisher, editor, and writer. In The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, the 1968 Disney movie based on the book by Alice’s younger sister Laura, Alice is played by Lesley Ann Warren, who

“Nellie Bly” was the pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochran, who became famous for “immersive” investigative journalism, most notably having herself committed to an insane asylum so that she could report on the horrible conditions there. She may be the most famous of 19th Century women journalists.

upstages most of the other stars—with Buddy Ebsen and Walter Brennan excepted. In reality, Alice had little to do with the band made up of her seven younger siblings. But on the Journal she was a kind of one-woman band. It suited her mightily. As the paper flourished and she was able to hire a larger staff, Alice spent more of her time writing. Her columns, often in the form of letters, dealt with her frequent travels on behalf of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the very tip of the spearhead of the women’s movement. She signed her columns, and often referred to herself, as “A. G.” As the century ended, the paper became a daily, The Rapid City Journal, and “A. G.” became known throughout the region, not only for her chatty letters, but also for her humanitarian work, for her crusading journalism, and for her promotion of good government. She died in 1929. Alice Bower Gossage well deserves recognition as South Dakota’s most outstanding pioneer woman journalist. Alice was not completely alone as a

versatile woman journalist in the 19th Century, of course A good parallel is Jane Swisshelm, who published a string of papers in St. Cloud Minnesota. Jane was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and, after experiencing the evils of slavery on a sojourn to Kentucky with her husband, returned to Pittsburgh and started writing poems and articles opposing slavery for publications in her home city and in Philadelphia. After divorcing her husband and moving to St. Cloud, she wrote bold editorials attacking slave owners who had moved to Minnesota. One of her targets retaliated by invading her offices, tearing out the printing press and throwing it in the Mississippi. Undaunted, Jane raised money for a new press and continued her crusade. After the civil war, she took on the cause of prohibition. Perhaps the most noted woman journalist of that era, of course, was Elizabeth Jane Cochran, who, under the pseudonym of Nellie Bly, pioneered investigative journalism. When the Pittsburgh Dispatch assigned her only the kinds of fluff stories

etc. for her | May 2018 21

they deemed appropriate for women, she moved to New York and began the kind of immersive writing that made her famous. Among her targets were sweatshops and insane asylums, which she infiltrated under assumed names. Her stories were so inflammatory that they led to real changes in the institutions. Later she promoted the careers of women’s rights advocates, and just before the turn of the century she circled the globe in just 72 days, beating the fictional Phineas Fogg (of “Around the World in 80 Days”) by 8 days. The 19th Century women journalists established models that were hard to follow. The male-dominated press continued well into the 20th Century. The advent of radio and television opened up a few opportunities for women, however. Wynn Speece, “Your Neighbor Lady,” built a large following on pioneering WNAX radio, although her offerings were of the traditional housewife variety—recipes, household tips, and cozy anecdotes. Television offered niches for such women personalities as Eugenia Hartig on KELO TV and Sylvia Henkin on KSOO. In the next generation, Mary Hart, who as Mary Harum appeared as Miss South Dakota in the Miss America Pageant, called upon communications skills learned in speech and drama at Augustana College to move from local shows on KSFY TV to being the long-lasting co-anchor of the CBS-sydicated “Entertainment Tonight.” While it is a bit of a stretch to call the above-mentioned women journalists, they nevertheless helped give momentum to the wave of new women writers, reporters, and media anchors who arose in the 1960s and 1970s. That generation, in turn, fostered the current crop of print and electronic journalists who are putting the rein on sexual assaults and male authoritarianism. Ron Robinson taught journalism at Augustana College for some 30 years. He is the author of several books, including, most recently, Kaboom: The True Story of the Powder House Blast. He may be contacted at ronaldrexmac@gmail.com.

HISTORY

Eugenia Hartig, who brightened the airwaves on KELO-TV, was also one of Sioux Falls’ favorite musical and dramatic performers, starring in dozens of productions, along with teaching vocal music at Augustana College.

Sylvia Henkin, who began her love affair with Sioux Falls on KSOO radio, became one of the city’s most recognizable personalities.

Mary Hart, a former Miss South Dakota and a graduate of Augustana College, became a familiar face on syndicated television as co-host of “Entertainment Tonight.”

ack in 2000, Jayson and Karla Santi built a home in Sioux Falls with a plan to stay there for ten years. When they reached the 15-year mark, they decided to embark on another home-building journey. “We really enjoyed the building process the first time,” Karla says. “We complement each other, and it was great just being creative together.” Their second home project was completed two years ago, although they had actually bought the lot on the east side of Sioux Falls a couple of years before they turned the first shovel of dirt.

“We knew where we would be, but we wanted to be sure we had the plans right before we started,” says Karla. The family did have a few things on their wish list for the new design, including a change from a ranch-style house to a 2-story design to add more levels and architectural features. With two young, active kids, it was also important to have comfortable space for the whole family. Both Karla and Jayson have furniture pieces and other items passed down through their families, so the design of the house is traditional enough to accommodate antiques, but also has both

modern and rustic touches that reflect their lifestyle. Inside the entry is a home office for Jayson that includes an upright piano that belonged to his great-great-grandfather. He works from a library table that had belonged to Karla’s dad when he was growing up. A wood hutch in the corner is filled with collectibles from Karla’s mom, and sitting atop the cabinet are old

Tinker Toys and an antique lamp. On the opposite side of the entry is the dining room. “We knew we wanted a separate dining room,” says Karla. “We eat here as a family, and it’s nice to be able to get out of the kitchen and sit together.” The Santis also enjoy entertaining, and Karla’s background in

design is evident when you see the unique tablescapes that she enjoys creating for dinner parties. A butler’s pantry connects the dining room to the kitchen and provides a small bar area on one side, and full length chalkboard and corkboard panels on the other. “We wanted to have a space for messages and for displaying

things for the kids without everything having to end up on the front of the refrigerator.” The spacious kitchen with its farmhouse-chic style is perfect for Jayson, who Karla says is the cook in the house. treatment above the island. “We worked with Driscoll Construction, and Justin is an amazing woodworker,” Karla says. “I told him my idea for the ceiling above the island, and he made it happen.” A rolling door opens to the walk-in pantry, a kitchen feature that was a “must have” on the couple’s list as they were planning the build. Right in line with the old-meets-new design of the house, they had found a door at Roger’s Shop, formerly located downtown Sioux Falls, and then added an old doorknob from the era of the original door. Having a mudroom between the kitchen and garage is a practical feature for a busy family. There are hanging lockers for each family member, along with a mail center with a small desk and storage drawers. “Our goal is to keep mail and other stuff from landing on the kitchen island,” laughs Karla. “It doesn’t always work, but we do our best!” One door leads to the garage, but they also added a door that opens to the side yard. Karla says this is especially nice for the kids so their friends can easily come to that door. They also added a small halfbath in this area, which is convenient when they are entertaining. You may not notice it right away, but one of the most unique features of the main floor has nothing to do with architecture, design or paint colors. Rather, it is the fact that there is no television. “We love listening to music, so that’s what we have playing in the background on this floor. The TV is too much of a distraction,” Karla says. The living room is a comfortable room with built-in cabinets on either side of the brick fireplace. A double set of French doors opens to a screened-in porch which Karla says is where they live and where they eat, except for in the cold months. The design idea comes from homes in places like Charleston, where, in the “old days,” homes were built with doors that opened on the front and the back of the house to let air circulate. Since their porch is screened in and covered, they can open these French doors and let the fresh air in. Steps lead down from the porch to a patio, and then stone steps lead down to the fire pit and backyard. Jayson built a trellis that is decorated with strands of lights. Between that arbor and the house are square pavers that create a cozy courtyard. In addition to being a cook, Jayson is also a gardener, so there is plenty of room in the yard for his garden. They designed a wide staircase going up to the second floor with a small landing halfway up. At the top of the stairs, the focal point is a large frame on one wall that holds a wall-sized print of Karla’s father’s family tree. The German lineage dates back to the 1200s, with a row of family crests across the top and follows the lines down to the bottom where her great-grandfather appears with other family members from the early 1800s. The family bedrooms are all on the second level.

Their daughter (age 8) has the twin bed and dresser that was Karla’s when she was growing up. While her daughter’s style is more contemporary, as evident by the sleek desk she picked out as a place to do her homework, the pieces create a cool, eclectic look. Her brother (age 13) has several floating shelves in his room for books and cars and other keepsakes. Over his bed hangs a map of the U.S. with different colored push pins – yellow for airports he’s been to, red in spots where family members live, blue for places he has been and green for favorite spots. The spacious master bedroom has several windows to bring in plenty of natural light and to provide a view of Willow Run Golf Course in the distance. “We didn’t realize it would be as big as it is when we were planning the design,” Karla says, “but we really love it.” They updated their bedroom furniture when they moved in, choosing a dresser and wardrobe with rolling doors that complement other rustic features in the house. A pencil drawing

of a house that Karla drew in high school hangs over the dresser. The couple was ecstatic when they were able to work separate walk-in closets into the plan. The closets sit opposite each other just outside the doorway to the master bath. Like the bathroom that their kids share, the master bath has two sinks with storage in the middle. There is a sunken tub and then a pocket door that opens to the shower area, and another door to the separate toilet room. Everything on this floor was designed to be functional yet ensure that everyone had their own space. The family also loves the fact that the laundry room is up here, close to the bedrooms. When they have time to just hang out together, they can head down to the lower level, where they have comfy furniture for watching television. There is a big table that would be great for game night, and the kids also have their own hideaway area built under the stairs, which is ideal for fort-building. When they don’t have actual guests staying in the guest room downstairs, you might often find them occupied by the family’s

brother and sister cats, Dash and Pixel. Karla says they were happy to find such a great lot where they can enjoy being in a neighborhood yet be somewhat removed from the “busy-ness” of being in the middle of town. And, it was

worth the wait while they took their time creating their plans for their home. Now, with warmer weather finally arriving, they are looking forward to opening those French doors and enjoying “porch season.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE BY JIM MATHIS

S

pring has been fickle this year. Temperatures more suited to February popped up in April, but despite the late coming of spring, May brings a few things with absolute certainty. The farmers markets will open, the new SculptureWalk season will be installed, and even the most timid grillers will fire up the Weber. And with the eventual coming of spring, menus will get lighter and we’ll look for quick, easy-to-prepare meals. As I’ve been looking for recipe ideas this spring from a variety of sources like magazines, websites, television shows and apps, and I’m struck by one thread that seems to tie them together; get the best and freshest ingredients you can, treat them simply and bring out the flavor of those ingredients. It all comes down to respecting the food — not hiding it in some complex mix of flavors. Simple

as that. For example, I found a recipe for gnocchi with asparagus, peas and mint. The sauce was just a little butter, Parmigiano-Reggiano and a little of the starchy water the gnocchi were cooked in. The fresh veggies and mint made the whole dish pop, while the gnocchi gave it a comfort-food feel we needed in this chilly spring. Despite a little snow in April, the local asparagus is coming up, and if you like the stalks you get at the mega-mart, you will love the really fresh local asparagus you’ll find at the farmers market. Or maybe you’re one of those lucky people who have a secret spot, down some seldom-driven country road, where you go each spring to harvest your own. If that’s you, let’s talk. If you give me the coordinates, I promise not to tell a soul!

Like so many spring veggies, the best way to treat asparagus is to keep it simple. A little steam, a quick roast in the oven, or a few minutes on the grill will soften the stalks and bring out the flavor. A little salt and a dash of pepper and enjoy. Or if you really want to keep it simple, try shaving a few raw spears on a salad. It’s also the season for fresh local morels. Talk about an ingredient that begs to be treated simply; fresh morels only need a quick sauté in butter, with a touch of salt and pepper. If you want to get a bit daring, maybe you could throw in a little garlic. Can’t find morels in the wild? Not willing to pay the high price at the store? Look to their humble relatives. Fresh oyster, king trumpet and lion’s mane mushrooms are being locally grown right here in the Sioux Empire by a small company called Dakota Mushrooms & Microgreens in Tea. You can find them at the Falls Park Farmers Market and Co-op Natural Foods. Again, sauté in a little butter and you’ll be amazed how good mushrooms can be, and at a price that’s much more reasonable than the morels. A couple weeks ago my brain fully shifted into spring mode. I treated my beloved to the perfect spring meal; rack of lamb, roasted asparagus and risotto. This combo is probably my favorite

meal any time of the year. While the menu sounds fancy, each item is simple. The lamb is seasoned with rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. Then the whole thing gets seared quickly and then roasted for about 15 minutes. The asparagus is simple to; roasted with olive oil, salt, pepper and a splash of balsamic vinegar. The risotto is a hands-on process, but the ingredient list is just Arborio rice, a diced shallot, a clove of garlic, a carton of chicken stock and some grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. A few simple ingredients that when cooked together turn into something outstanding. So ignore the 20-step recipes and seek out the easy ones that really celebrate what the season has to offer. Keep it simple; remember the basics. A little salt, a little acid and enjoy the fresh tastes of the season! And do yourself a favor, eat something good today. hat kind of glass does your mom use? If it’s anything but Riedel, get ready to blow her mind. The 11th generation Austrian glass company has been the leader in the stemware industry for a very long time. When it comes to enjoying your favorite fermented beverage, there is no question that the art and science of Riedel stemware makes the wine-drinking experience that much better. Need proof? Try the following experiment with your mom and astonish her senses.

Get the vision you deserve Use your FSA or HSA dollars on LASIK

Take advantage of this year’s benefits or start planning for next year before your savings goes away. With additional nointerest financing options, you might find LASIK more affordable than you think.

Items you will need: 1. Riedel Burgundy stemware (the Vinum line is a nice one to start with.) 2. A “Joker” glass (any inexpensive wine glass with a rolled lip.) 3. A good bottle of Russian River Pinot Noir (Two wineries I would recommend are J and MacMurray Ranch.)

right and Joker glass on the left. Pour about 4 oz. of your Pinot Noir in the Riedel glass first. Swirl vigorously. Now get your nose in there and smell, really smell. Pick out the nice cherry aromas and perhaps a hint of chocolate or licorice. According to Georg Reidel (10th generation glassmaker) in order to properly smell a wine, your nose needs to be inside the glass so far that your upper lip rests on the rim of the glass. And if you’ve ever been to a glass tasting with Georg Reidel, you better do what he says! Now, comes the fun part: Pour the contents of your Riedel glass into the Joker glass. I’ve been to tastings where the same wine is poured into two different glasses, and the two are compared. Doing it this way is much more powerful. You see, when you physically pour the Pinot Noir that’s in your Riedel glass, your brain is processing the fact that it’s the same exact wine in both glasses. Now, just smell your Pinot Noir in the Joker glass. Smell anything different? Smell anything at all? Smell your empty Riedel glass, just for fun. Smell anything now?

I won’t ruin the experience for you by describing the outcome in detail, but I think you get the idea. Remember to transfer your wine back to your Riedel glass and finish enjoying your wine the way it was meant to be. Anybody can tell you that this glass is better than that glass, but nothing replaces your own experience doing this fun exercise. So this year for Mother’s Day, enhance your mom’s wine with a set of Riedel glasses and give her the gift that keeps on giving, or in some cases, the gift that gets used daily. How yoga enhances wellness BY SANFORD HEALTH

W

hen it comes to wellness, better health may be just a few yoga poses away. According to a 2016 Yoga Journal report, 36.7 million people practice yoga in the U.S. – and you don’t have to be an expert to reap the benefits. There are more than 100 different types of yoga, but regardless of type most sessions include breathing exercises, meditation and assuming various poses, also called asana. The many poses of yoga stretch and flex muscles throughout the body.

62 mind-body-spirit |

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

At the Sanford Wellness Center, members can choose from a variety of yoga classes including intro to yoga, gentle yoga, yoga sculpt, yoga PLUS and Vinyasa yoga, which coordinates movement with breath. There are occasionally even yoga classes for kids as well. A long list of physical benefits can result from regular yoga practice. The posing and relaxation techniques can do everything

from increasing muscle strength to improving respiration. Other benefits can include: • A balanced metabolism • Better circulatory health • Less chronic pain (like arthritis) • Lower blood pressure • Improved energy levels • Increased flexibility • Increased endurance • Injury prevention • Reduced insomnia • Weight reduction

Yoga also has benefits for mental wellbeing. “We also work with the breath,” explains Tonya Bauer, yoga instructor at the Sanford Wellness Center. “It calms the mind and the body so we aren’t stressed as much. It also provides a peace of mind to do the poses. It’s amazing how it calms and releases stress. Then, when you aren’t as stressed, you can go about your daily activities in a more relaxed manner.” Bauer herself started practicing yoga because she was experiencing pain and struggled with flexibility. Her doctor suggested that she do exercises to help. She says that Sanford Wellness Center members with injuries like whiplash frequently attend yoga classes. “Doing yoga can definitely help ease pain,” Bauer says. “There’s no competition, there’s no pushing you hard, there’s no forcing you into doing anything. It’s all about you and where you are that day. You can modify and make it your practice. Some days you might be better and some days you might be worse, but you just do what you can.” Bauer believes in the importance of having a regular exercise

schedule, which is why she’s passionate about being a yoga instructor at the Wellness Center. Bauer instructs classes at both locations, one at 49th and Oxbow and one just off of Ellis Road. During an extensive renovation last year, the Wellness Center at Oxbow added a heated yoga studio. During hot yoga sessions, the room temperature is raised to about 93 degrees, compared to the typical temperature for a regular yoga session, which is around 76 degrees. “The heat will allow you to be a little more flexible. Your muscles warm up so you can release into a pose a little bit better,” Bauer explains. While heated yoga is only at offered at the Oxbow location, both locations offer yoga throughout the week, at several different times to provide members with convenient options. Yoga sessions at the Ellis Road location are currently on Tuesday and Friday evenings, as well as Sunday afternoon. If you’re interested in learning more about yoga visit either Sanford Wellness location or TrySanfordWellness.com.

Hip Replacement Success Stories from Orthopedic Institute T

otal hip replacement is one of the most successful and cost effective interventions in medicine in recent years. This is due partly to improvements in the science of hip replacement implants, experience of surgeons, and the growing population of hip replacement patients. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, of all total hip replacements performed each year in the United States, more than 95 percent are successful with patients experiencing relief from hip pain. The success rate of hip replacements 10 years after surgery is 90-95 percent. The number of hip replacements performed in the United States has increased substantially in recent years, and the procedure has become more common in younger people, new

government statistics show. Recovery is dramatically easier for patients, and the baby boomer generation is less willing to accept the limitations that accompany arthritis. Although not everyone would describe getting a hip replacement as a “walk in the park”, these two well-known South Dakotans would, and they want to share their successful anterior hip replacement stories with you. If you have followed amateur baseball in South Dakota in any capacity over the last 50 years, you’ve heard of Lee Goldammer, one of the finest amateur baseball pitchers in South Dakota, who is still pitching today! And, some of the best tasting catering you can experience in this region comes from Tony Bosch of Tony’s Catering.

Here’s a Q & A from them: LEE GOLDAMMER Q. How did you hear about Orthopedic Institute? A. My wife worked for OI years ago, and that’s how I got there. I had Dr. Zoellner do my first hip replacement - my niece recommended him. Q. What was your first experience with OI? A. My initial experience was my first hip surgery. They cut most along the side, and I underwent therapy for about a month. Although rehab took a few weeks, I still got along well. That’s just the way it was back then. Q. How did you decide to get the anterior hip replacement completed?

66 mind-body-spirit |

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

A. I heard about this new type of surgery and how Dr. Rothrock would perform the surgery. I knew I would be in the hospital two to three days, and Dr. Rothrock said the amount of therapy I wanted to take on was up to me. I remember my hip hurt so badly that I couldn’t raise my leg, so I went ahead with the surgery. Afterward, I pulled my leg up immediately, and there wasn’t any pain. Q. What was therapy like for this surgery? A. There was no therapy after that - the doctor simply gave me a few things to do. I used a walker for two or three days, and then I went to a cane. I was easily going up and down steps in about two weeks. Q. What would you say to someone who is considering this surgery? A. I recommend it right away - I recommend it to everybody. I’ve talked to four or five people, and I tell them it’s a piece of cake. There was much less rehab than after my first surgery. You can be on your way in no time. Everyone has a tendency to put it off. I know it’s hard to do, because no one likes surgery, but they always say they wish they had done it a long time before.

TONY BOSCH Q. How did you first learn about OI? A. My wife had some surgery done with Dr. Looby. She had a sciatic nerve problem. Q. What was your first experience with OI? A. After my wife’s surgery, Dr. Looby came into the consultation room and we got to visiting. So I knew him when my hip started hurting. Next thing you know I have this hip causing me trouble. Dr. Looby said Dr. Adler was really good with hips. So I went in for an appointment, had the x-rays and Dr. Adler told me my hip was full of arthritis. I asked him if we could do it soon, and he was able to make it happen for me the very next day. I never missed one day of work after the surgery. I went to work after the surgery, set my walker off to the side, and I never used the walker, a cane or anything. The hardest part was training my head not to limp! Someone saw me afterwards and asked, “Didn’t you just have hip surgery? You’re limping pretty bad.” But my hip didn’t hurt at all. I was limping just because I was used to limping for so long because of my hip pain. So I took about a week for me to learn to stop limping. Q. What was your experience with the doctors like? A. Dr. Adler is just one fabulous human being. Orthopedic Institute is very lucky to have him, and Dr. Mitch Johnson. We are blessed to have this kind of medical facility, Orthopedic Institute, in Sioux Falls. Q. What was therapy like for this surgery? A. I didn’t need any therapy. I mean, I had a total hip replacement. No therapy. Zero! You just knew when it started hurting that you needed to take a break. Q. What would you say to someone who is considering this surgery? A. I wouldn’t look any further than OI. Dr. Adler is the best there is as far as I am concerned. He’s not only a great surgeon but a great human being. He has patient charisma, he’s the whole package.

O

ne of the best gifts a mother can receive from her children is a piece of art that captures how small they once were. They grow so quickly! Here are a few ideas using hands and feet. Feel free to get creative and ask your kids to come up with something to turn their prints into, the possibilities are endless.

Hands and Feet LOVE Art

Special Handprints Choose a few colors of paint, then carefully press your child’s hand into the paint and along the outside of some paper. Leave room in the middle to write your poem, as follows: “Mommy, you always clean the handprints I leave upon the wall. I seem to make a mess of things because I am so small. The years will pass so quickly. I’ll soon be grown like you. And all the little handprints will surely fade from view. So these are special handprints…a memory that’s true. So you’ll recall the very day I made this just for you!”

70 friends & family |

FOR KIDS

This is one to frame. Choose what colors to use, then start with painting a cursive style “L” on the far right side of a piece of paper, and “e” on the far left side. Leave room in between the letters to place your child’s hand and footprints. Then, paint the inside of your child’s hand and press it down right next to the “L”. This will resemble the “o” in the word LOVE. Next, paint the bottom of both feet, then carefully press each foot down in order to create a V shape, in between the handprint and the letter “e”. This will resemble the letter “v” in the word LOVE. Let dry, and display in a way of your choice. Maybe you have nice frame, you can use a magnet to hang it on the fridge, hang it on the wall with decorative tape, or let your kids decide.

Butterfly Footprints Using different colors of paint, cover the bottom of both of your child’s feet, alternating the colors so they all show up when you go to make your footprints. Be sure to cover all of the toes and the entire heel. Next, press the right foot onto a piece of paper, positioning it onto the upper left side. Press the left foot onto the upper right side. The footprints should be opposite from what they naturally line up to be. Use a black marker to draw antenna, and to write this special poem: “This isn’t just a butterfly, as you can plainly see. I made it with my feet, which are a part of me. It comes with lots of love, especially to say I hope you have a very Happy Mother’s Day!”

Handprint Memory This one is pretty simple, but oh so meaningful. Simply paint your child’s fingers and palm and press down on a piece of paper. Write this rhyme: “This is the hand you used to hold when I was only __ years old” Personalize it with your child’s age at the time, and a message from them on the bottom of the paper. Why not do one of these every year and start a collection for Mom to keep as her child grows? You could start a special handprint journal to add to each Mother’s Day. What a great way to document those younger years.

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

Acupuncture involves the careful placement of slender needles into key points in the body, including the abdomen or from the knees to the feet. It’s also common to have them placed around the hands and the head. “Sometimes it may include placement of hair-like needles into the external part of the ear, too,” she said. “When we first meet with the patient, we go through history and discuss the best approaches. It can vary depending on a number of factors and our initial consultation can help those new to the technique better understand it before we begin.” Most acupuncture sessions take about an hour. They are done in a relaxing room and the needles are left in place for approximately 20-30 minutes. While most fertility-related acupuncture is for women, some men take part in the medical service as well, to help with circulation or to address stress and anxiety, which are factors that also can affect fertility. “Stress can play a negative role in our lives and health, and it can negatively impact efforts by couples who are trying to conceive. It impacts our hormone levels so much,” Williams said. “Women will come in for one or two sessions each week, and we will usually see them for a period of two to nine months. We typically see results during months two through six. But naturally, the results can vary, and it’s not a guaranteed procedure. It doesn’t work for every type of infertility.” Williams said there are many benefits beyond the improvements in fertility. “Acupuncture patients also report that they feel better overall and have higher energy levels, so there are a variety of advantages to using this approach,” she said. They Didn’t Teach THIS in Worm School! by Simone Lia Marcus is a worm, and a bird named Laurence who looks very much like a chicken is about to eat him for breakfast. So what does Marcus do? He strikes up a conversation, of course! But even after talking his way out of being eaten, Marcus’s troubles are just beginning: soon he is clinging to Laurence’s neck as the designated navigator on an absurd journey to Kenya, where his feathered companion dreams of finding happiness with other flamingos like himself. Except Marcus can’t actually read a map, and this bird is clearly not a flamingo. Will Marcus be able to get them both to Africa — or even manage to survive the day? Filled with kid-friendly illustrations, this is a buddy comedy that will have readers wriggling with laughter. Ages 7 yrs - 9 yrs candlewickpress.com

Baabwaa and Wooliam by David Elliott Baabwaa is a sheep who loves to knit. Wooliam is a sheep who loves to read. It sounds a bit boring, but they like it. Then, quite unexpectedly, a third sheep shows up. A funny-looking sheep who wears a tattered wool coat and has long, dreadfully decaying teeth. Wooliam, being well-read, recognizes their new acquaintance: the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing! The wolf is so flattered to discover his literary reputation precedes him that he stops trying to eat Baabwaa and Wooliam. And a discovery by the sheep turns the encounter into an unexpected friendship. A hilarious and satisfying tale of literacy, dental hygiene, and friendship from David Elliott and Melissa Sweet that is sure to have readers in stitches from start to finish. Everything about them is different, except one thing: they both want to be the best. But as their intense rivalry grows, something else begins to swing into place, and a friendship forms that will outlast all their tennis victories. Phil Bildner and Brett Helquist tell the engaging true story of these two masters of the court as they win title after title — and, most importantly, the hearts of the fans. Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can’t help but root for. MAY IS PET CANCER AWARENESS MONTH As in people, early detection improves a pet’s chances of a positive outcome in the treatment of cancer. As veterinarians, we strongly recommend a minimum once per year check – up for your pet, increasing to twice per year as age advances.

Warning Signs of Cancer • Swollen Lymph Nodes - These “glands” are located all throughout the body but are most easily detected under the jaw or behind the knee. • An Enlarging or Changing Lump - Any lump on a pet that is rapidly growing or changing in texture or shape. • Abdominal Distension - When the “stomach” or belly becomes enlarged rapidly. • Chronic Weight Loss - When a pet is losing weight and you have not put your pet on a diet. • Chronic Vomiting or Diarrhea Unexplained vomiting or diarrhea

Henry, best friend of Tanya Buskohl

• Unexplained Bleeding - Bleeding from the mouth, nose, gums or blood in the urine or stool, that is not due to trauma.

• Cough - A dry, non-productive cough in an older pet. Please remember there are many causes of cough in dogs and cats. • Lameness - Unexplained lameness (especially in large or giant breed dogs) is a very common sign of bone cancer. • Straining to Urinate - Straining to urinate and blood in the urine usually indicate a urinary tract infection, however, if the straining and bleeding do not resolve with antibiotics or are recurrent, cancer of the bladder may be the underlying cause. • Oral Odor - Oral tumors do occur in pets and can cause a pet to change its food preference or cause a pet to change the manner in which he/she chews their food. Many times a foul odor can be detected in pets with oral tumors.
