ometimes you encounter people who are doing exactly what it seems like they were born to do. Riccardo Tarabelsi is one of those people. He came to the United States as a young child, having been born in Florence, Italy.

Riccardo grew up in Boston and later met Marybeth, the love of his life, eventually moving to her hometown of Sioux Falls. The two recently opened R Wine Bar in the historic Frank Building in the East Bank area of downtown Sioux Falls, but

there were other stops in their journey that made this dream a reality. If you have been around Sioux Falls for a while, you may remember Riccardo from the original Spezia location on 26th Street or from Westward Ho Country Club (now

the Country Club of Sioux Falls). Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Fernson Brewing Co. While his last venture took him into the world of craft beer, there’s no question that his name has always been

synonymous with wine. “Having my own place with a focus on wine is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” he says. “The timing was right to finally take that leap.” But, he adds, he wants people to know

that this is more than just a “wine bar.” R Wine Bar features a collection of craft beers on tap, a delicious menu, and a merchandise area. It was easy for the Tarabelsis to create the environment they wanted, because the space in the Frank Building, formerly occupied by Prairie Berry East Bank, already had such rustic charm with its exposed quartzite walls and wood floors. All they had to do was add a little Italian flair to the décor. One wall in the main space is stocked from floor to ceiling with wines that Riccardo hand-picked, with specific reasons for choosing each bottle. In the same way, the Tarabelsis handpicked their staff, led by Chef Jerrica Kang and Dining Room Manager Kira Freese. The business is a family affair, so you will often see Marybeth and their three children, ages 18, 16, 14, helping out. The private event spaces are named in their honor – Jax, which can accommodate up to 60 people on the main floor with a banquet menu and custom wine list upon request; Dante’s, which is located in the lower level with a cool Speakeasy feel and room for 24 people seated or up to 45 in a “mix-and-mingle” setting; and when the weather warms up, they have an outdoor private space called Berent’s Patio on the west side of the building. For the food menu, Riccardo said he wanted to ensure it was focused and wellexecuted. “Chef Jerrica uses original recipes,” he says, “and has a number of specialties like

her pesto, marinara, mango vinaigrette, sweet chili vinaigrette and her creamy garlic mashed potatoes that are served alongside our panini.” A side note about the word “panini” – that is the plural form, as you will see each of the sandwiches listed individually on the menu as a “panino.” Prepared and pressed to perfection, you can choose from Turkey Caprese, Muffaletta, Margherita, Portobello or Pepperoni Panini – all made with fresh ingredients and Italian flavors. The menu also features a selection of fresh salads, including one of Chef Jerrica’s own creations called the Kang Salad that blends greens, marinated Portobello mushrooms, thin sliced radish, tomatoes, crumbled feta, crisped pancetta and sliced peppadews. Guests have also been enjoying all of the unique flavors displayed on the R Wine Bar charcuterie boards, Riccardo says. Charcuterie originated as a term describing the preparation of meats that are cured or smoked, such as bacon, ham or salami. Over the years, however, it grew to become associated with a variety of specialty and gourmet meats paired with various accompaniments like fruit, cheese, breads and sauces. The boards at R Wine Bar include homemade pesto, Honey Pepper Fig rustic bread from Breadico, antipasto olives, peppadew Italian cherry peppers stuffed with provolone and prosciutto and a cluster of green grapes. Over the years, the East Bank has developed into a retail, dining and entertainment destination for both residents and visitors, and Riccardo says it was the perfect place to bring their vision to life. “We want to take people on a journey,” he explains. “Certainly that includes teaching them about different wines and helping them explore new tastes, but we also want to surprise them with the atmosphere, with fantastic service, and with some delicious food.” Saluti!

Powder House Epilogue:

The Confession and the ‘Great Escape’ BY RON ROBINSON

J

ust 80 years ago, in 1938, Leland Bradley, a longtime resident of Sioux Falls and the leader of the “gang” involved in the state’s most spectacular crime, the Powder House Blast, was arrested near Yakima, Washington. Bradley had been following the case from afar and was disgusted when William Nesbit was convicted of murder and sent to prison for life for a crime he didn’t commit. In December, Bradley made it known that he wanted to set things straight, so the Argus-Leader sent a young sports reporter, Kenneth Guenthner, to the county jail to hear the confession. The story appeared on the front page of the Dec. 29th edition. Bradley said that he and he alone killed his partner in crime, Floyd Parker, during a drunken argument, and that it was Slim Reeves who shot Parker’s girlfriend, Helen Sieler, just once, rendering her unconscious. It was Bradley’s idea to set off the dynamite in the powder house to cover up the crime. Sieler’s story of being shot eight times was pooh-poohed. Bradley suggested the wounds in her back came from shrapnel from the blast. Billy Nesbit comes across in Bradley’s confession as little more than a bystander, the victim of intentional lies by Slim Reeves and unintentional lies by Helen Sieler, both of whom had been witnesses for the prosecution. One might expect that Nesbit might have his conviction overturned as the result of Bradley’s confession. Instead, his conviction was upheld, and after Bradley pled guilty, both men were to carry out life sentences in the South Dakota State Penitentiary. Almost every “fact” publicized by officials and newspapers was destroyed by trial testimony and Bradley’s confession. There was no spectacular jewel robbery in Sioux City; the robbery was faked under the direction of its supposed victim, W.A. Ehlerman, who spent only two years in an Iowa prison for his part in the crime. Nobody was killed in the blast at the Larson Hardware powder house. Parker was killed beforehand and Sieler escaped to tell the story. Bradley was the only murderer, having killed his partner in a drunken struggle resulting from an argument about Sieler, whom

HISTORY

Bradley despised. Most importantly, Billy Nesbit was essentially just “along for the ride.” Some law enforcement officers would argue that “he was there, so he was guilty.” But that formula did not hold for Reeves, who escaped prosecution, even though he shot Parker’s girl, or for the girl herself, who got off scot-free. Billy Nesbit proved to be a compliant prisoner, rewarded for his good behavior by being made trusty, often taking care of the foliage around the warden’s quarters. Time passed. World War II drove memories of the case out of the public consciousness. Atomic bomb explosions at Hiroshima and Nagasaki made the powder house explosion seem innocuous as a firecracker by comparison. In 1946, the Board of Pardons and Corrections and Republican Gov. Merrell Q. Sharpe reduced Billy Nesbit’s sentence to 20 years. That gave Nesbit just ten more years to serve. For Billy, that was still too much. In the night check of Sept. 4, 1946, Nesbit turned up missing. A United Press story about Nesbit’s escape quoted prison officials who said Billy was a “model prisoner” and “not believed to be dangerous.” The state board of pardons was quoted as saying that “Nesbit had little to do with the actual planning and execution of the murder” and it too said that he had been a model prisoner. As if to demonstrate how little anyone cared about the escape, reward for information leading to his capture was set at $100. And that was how things stood for almost five years. Now comes J. Edgar Hoover, striding to the triumphal march that was the theme song of the radio series “The FBI in Peace and War.” The 1920s and ‘30s had been great days for Hoover and the FBI, with prohibition and the Great Depression drumming up loads of bootleggers and bank robbers for the Bureau to deal with: Al Capone, John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, and dozens of others. The war had made public enemies of domestic fascists and Nazis, and Japanese-Americans were isolated in detention camps. The post-war good times had created something of a hiatus in the Bureau’s reputation. The big name criminals of the past were

dead or locked up, and former international enemies were now our allies. It was the “Ten Most Wanted Criminals” that breathed new life into the organization. International News Service made a trial run in 1949. Hoover ate it up. In March of 1950, the list of the most wanted fugitives was made a regular feature. And Billy Nesbit was on the very first list. Suddenly, all the old, disproven “facts” about the Powder House Case were revived.

22 out and about |

HISTORY

INS reporter James Lee had a gift for hyperbole. His story about Nesbit began: “FBI officials consider William Raymond Nesbit one of the most dangerous criminals alive because of the vicious nature of his crime— cold-blooded murder and attempted ‘murder by dynamite.’” No mention of Nesbit being a model prisoner. A St. Paul youth, 14-year-old Jimmy Lewis, was having a cookie and a glass of milk after school that Friday in March. His mother had just washed the floor and had spread out pages of that day’s issue of the Pioneer Press to protect against muddy feet. As Jimmy sipped his milk, his eyes idly played over the paper on the floor. Suddenly he was struck by the mug shot of a man. It looked something like a fellow he knew who lived in a cave in the woods on the banks of the Mississippi River. He and his friend Jimmy Radeck decided to go down to the river the next day and see if they could get a better look at the man, who went by the name of Ray. The next morning they and other friends gathered by the cave, an abandoned man-made cavern originally used to grow mushrooms and later by bootleggers to store booze. They waited for hours, shivering in the snow, but the man made no appearance. Desperate, they stuffed snowballs into the chimney spewing smoke above the cave. Before long, “Ray” came running out wheezing, and they got a good look at him. It was the man whose picture was in the paper. They ran and got the cops, who made short work of capturing the “vicious criminal,” Billy Nesbit, who surrendered meekly. The two Jimmys were rewarded with a trip to Washington to shake hands with J. Edgar Hoover, and they and their friends shared the cash reward, which amounted to $25 or less for each boy. Neither Nesbit nor Bradley served the entire life sentence. Bradley was released in 1958 and lived another three years. Nesbit had almost twenty years of freedom before his death in 1983 at the age of 84. Celebrating Family at the Holidays – THE

Vernon AND Tami Brown HOME BY MARY MICHAELS | PHOTOS BY JULIE PRAIRIE PHOTOGRAPHY

ost families have at least one keepsake passed down from generations before them. Vernon and Tami Brown are fortunate enough to have many photos, collectibles and furniture pieces – as well as the stories behind them – that keep them connected to family. And, that’s a special thing to celebrate during the holiday season. The Browns moved to their All Saints Neighborhood home in 2009. They had not been planning a move, but happened across this house during one of their occasional outings to open houses for homes in the area that had gone on the market. They had actually walked through this house a few years earlier, but at that time, it was flaunting 1980s pink and black décor, and they knew it needed more time and resources to update it than they were able to give.

However, on Labor Day weekend of 2009, it was for sale again; this time after having had some pleasant cosmetic updates. They talked with a realtor about the logistics and they were able to sell their current home in just two days. It all seemed meant to be. Both Tami and Vernon agree on one of the key selling points when they walked into the house. “As soon as we stepped into the living room, we both knew exactly where the Christmas tree would go,” laughs Vernon. That spot was in front of the bump-out window on the front of the house, and it’s where the tree has gone every year since. Tami says they have decorated with different colors over the years. In their previous home, they created a black and gold theme, she explains, but when they put those decorations up for the first time in the new house, it just didn’t seem right.

In recent years, the Browns went with more traditional red and white for the holidays, which they feel is definitely more fitting for the character of the house. As they were getting ready to decorate this year, they happened to find a tiny pair of red mittens that Vernon’s great-great aunt Myrtle made for him when he was a boy. “I told him, ‘We’re putting those on the tree this year,’” says Tami. Whether you’re roasting chestnuts on an open fire, or reading about Saint Nicholas coming down the chimney, there’s nothing that says “holidays” more than a fireplace and a decorated mantle. The white woodwork around the fireplace – and throughout the house – is a natural backdrop for all the pops of Christmas red. On the mantle are two leaded glass window inserts, decorated with wreaths for the holidays, which the Browns found on the farm near Olivet, South Dakota, where Tami’s grandmother was born. “We were working down on the farm once, and the old garage was being taken down,” Tami explains. Vernon and Emma found

these in the room we didn’t even know existed. We literally rescued them at the last second before the building came down.” As you look around the living room, you see a few of the furniture pieces that were handed down from family members, such as an oak writing desk. All of these are worth a closer look to appreciate the craftsmanship and the excellent condition they are in, but at holiday time, it’s what sits atop the desk that garners all of the attention. Back in the 1970s at the height of the painted ceramics craze, Vernon’s mom created three nativity sets using bright, pearlized paints in colors fitting with that decade. Vernon’s brother has the second set, and his dad has the third. “I don’t know if the wise men would have had aqua blue or fuchsia robes,” Tami says with a smile, “but one thing is certain, she was meticulous in her work.” While it may be a bit non-traditional, it’s one of their favorite things to get out at Christmas time, and the Browns’ daughter, Emma, has always had a hand in setting it up.

“Vernon’s mom passed away,” says Tami, “so Emma and I never had the pleasure of meeting her. But we feel like we do know her because of the personality she conveyed through the nativity set. She was detailed and careful in her work, but judging by the colors, she also had a big personality.” In addition to decorating the living room, they take the holidays out to the three-season room located just through the white Dutch door at the back of the room. They enjoy opening the top half of the door and sitting out there during spring, summer and fall, but once this time of year rolls around, it’s a spot where Vernon hangs oversized ornaments. “It’s really fun when it’s lit up,” says Tami. “The neighbors tell us they enjoy it, too.” Moving into other rooms on the main floor, you pass through curved archways, which was another feature that caught their attention when they first saw the house. Since buying the home, they have done a little research since they are near so many other historic homes. The Browns discovered the house was originally built in

1937, by a family that owned a local Ford dealership. The father also built a few of the houses adjacent to theirs; presumably for each of his children. It’s possible the family could have had servants, or perhaps boarders, because there are two sets of stairs from the main

floor down to the basement – the one they call the “fancy staircase” just off the entryway, and “the other staircase” at the back of the house. A door separates the front of the house from the back. Hanging on the wall near that door is a photo of Vernon’s grandmother as a young

girl that they believe was from around 1920. The original was in black and white, but this copy had been colorized to show the pretty pink dress and oversized hair bow. The beautiful little girl with curly hair is holding two kittens and sitting in a field wearing a hat shielding her eyes from

the sun. “It is my absolute favorite picture of her,” says Vernon. Behind the door is a bathroom and a bedroom the Browns use as a guest room. The unusually small, narrow closet in that bedroom could have once been an open butler’s pantry or hallway to the kitchen.

Also at the back of the house is a room that serves as an office. “You’ll see a lot of our odd collections back here,” says Vernon, motioning to various old signs, old scales and a lightup globe. The Browns are self-proclaimed scavengers, antiquers and pickers. They say that they aren’t necessarily looking for anything valuable during their hunting adventures, but rather, just exploring to see what might be the next great find to add to a collection. A large cube of old mailboxes was a rummage sale find. They noticed addresses on the back and figured out they were all from Brookings. A tin side table in the room may have once been a pie cooler. When you open its door, though, you see that someone in the 1960s used it in some sort of retail setting, because the inside of the door has handwritten (in cursive!) dates, quantities and dollar amounts. In the office and the hallway are photographs from Tamil’s family’s farm, including a beautiful shot Vernon took of an

G Easter morning sunrise. While some people may go to a lake home for a getaway, the Browns go to the farm. With all of the updates their family has collectively completed over the years, the house can sleep 13, and they use the new garage for family reunions. The dining room is set for holiday gatherings with large, red wreaths on two walls and red table accents to complement the white milk glass dishes. “That is one thing I collect,” says Tami, referring to the milk glass. “Some pieces have come from family but mostly they are pieces we find at estate sales or other places.” On the third wall hangs what may be one of their favorite Christmas decorations – a circular, metal nativity scene created from the bottom of an oil drum. It came from the Ten Thousand Villages store formerly located downtown. “We had both looked at it,” recalls Vernon, “but didn’t buy it. We kept thinking about it, and there was just one of them, so we ended up calling back and having them hold it for us. Now, it’s not Christmas until this comes out, along with the painted ceramic nativity set.” As a family of three, they aren’t usually in the dining room unless they have company over. Instead, they enjoy sitting in the little nook where they can sit by the windows talking and watching the changing seasons. An old crank phone that had once been the phone in Vernon’s grandparents’ farmhouse now hangs on the wall. The fact that the kitchen had already been updated was another selling point when the Browns looked at the house. All they have done since is to change the paint color and add a tile backsplash. There is ample cupboard space and some built-in shelves to hold family pieces like two sets of green glass salt and pepper shakers that had belonged to both sets of Vernon’s grandparents. Three glass canisters from Tami’s grandmother sit on another shelf. “Grandma always had those with white beans, macaroni and rice in them. I just keep them the same way.” Another cupboard has dividers where Tami keeps her “poor man’s silver” trays. Historically, people would display pewter, or even some tin and aluminum pieces, as a way to elevate their status when they did not have pure silver. These trays come out for serving food at social gatherings or, at the holidays, for displaying decorations like Grandma June’s glass ornaments. Going up the garland-wrapped staircase hangs a collection of white frames holding pictures from both Tami and Vernon’s families. When Emma was young, Tami explains, they hung in her nursery as a way to connect past generations to the newest one. At this house, though, the wall going upstairs looked like the perfect gallery space for them. At the top of the stairs is an old, upright ladder holding a collection of quilts, most of them made by Vernon’s mother or grandmother. However, a pink and white one on the top rung has a particularly interesting story. “This one came from a Hidden Treasures estate sale here in town,” Vernon explains. “I had initially found a piece of souvenir

glass with Sinai, S.D., written on it, which is where my mom was from. When I went to buy it, the woman asked me about my connection to Sinai. She then directed me to a room where this quilt was and told me it was made by a group of women from the Lutheran church in Sinai. And there, along with the 1938 date and names of dozens of other women, was the handstitched name of his great-grandmother. The characteristic angled roofline of older homes creates two cozy bedrooms upstairs. Emma’s is perfectly teenager with medals, pictures, and colorful outfits displaying her love for ballet. Behind her personal closet are two more, which is where the Browns go each year when it’s time to bring out the Christmas decorations. The master bedroom features antique furniture pieces from Vernon’s family, as well as a dresser and an old radio cabinet – now with open shelves - that came from Tami’s side. Instead of traditional nightstands, the couple has a pair of old school desks, which is fitting since Tami is an English teacher. Another nod to Tami’s profession is the stack of old games in the paneled family room in the basement. “All of these games like Scrabble are based on letters and words,” she says, holding a wood cube with the letter “a” on it. “I’m not sure what I’m going to make with these yet.” They decided to leave the pine paneling just as it was because it has such a nostalgic character to it. A large built-in covers an entire wall and holds special family keepsakes like a coffee service set painted by Vernon’s great-grandmother and a “bride’s basket” with its scallopededge glass bowl and silver carrier. Vernon’s great grandparents received it as a 25th anniversary gift, and Vernon’s father passed it on to Vernon and Tami as a wedding gift. While neither Vernon nor Tami was born in Sioux Falls, it is apparent they love the community they have now called home for so long. Vernon has a sizeable collection of

GIFT IDEAS FOR

FOODIES 2018 EDITION BY JIM MATHIS

E

very year about this time, my beloved reminds me that I am a hard person for whom to buy holiday gifts. My birthday is in November, so if I’ve dropped any hints through the year (and haven’t already bought said item for myself) I’ll get it for my birthday leaving nothing for Christmas. This year is no different. When I hinted that we should get a new sound bar for the TV, my bride was not surprised when it arrived from UPS a few days later. That’s what I do. I discover something that I want, and I go out and get it, not waiting for the appropriate gift-giving scenario. Conversely, if I want to give a gift, I tend to do it when the mood strikes, not waiting for a particular date on a calendar. Like last summer when I saw a book I thought my sister would like, I ordered it right away. I didn’t realize the online bookstore wouldn’t tell her where it came from, so Cristina spent a couple of hours trying to find out who had sent her this gift out the blue. What does that mean for you? It means I’ve got a few gift ideas that just might be perfect for that hard-to-buy-for foodie on your list. Each idea I’m sharing has been personally tested by me. If they don’t like it, feel free to have them re-gift it to me.

kitchen-ware stores with no luck, a quick Amazon search had one on its way to my kitchen. The only drawback? When I use it my beloved still thinks the sound is a champagne cork and she’s sometimes disappointed to discover a bottle of Cabernet or red zinfandel. About $23.

A New Way to Open Wine

Cooking with Class

This summer our friends Mark and Kriss invited us over for a glass of wine, and who are we to turn down a refreshing beverage? Nothing too out of the ordinary until Mark opened a nice French rosé with a “pop!” This wasn’t a sparkling wine, but he’d grabbed a device with a long skinny needle and jammed it into the cork, then with a quick squeeze of his thumb it shot a blast of CO2 into the bottle and the cork came out with that distinctive “pop.” He’d used a CorkPops brand opener and I had never seen such a quick and each way to dispatch a wine cork. After searching a couple local

I know this is a repeat from last year’s list, but if you haven’t tried one of the many cooking classes around town, you’re really missing out. HyVee offers classes, a few restaurants like K at Eighth and Railroad do them from time to time and Maxwell Food Equipment on Cliff Avenue holds several each month. My pick is Plum’s Cooking Company. Penny, Traci and their team offer a great variety of classes; most weeks there are three to choose from. Some highlight a particular piece of equipment, others celebrate a new cookbook. Our favorites are the Friday night “Date Night” classes. In these classes a chef (or chefs) prepares a gourmet meal while you and the other guests enjoy a glass of wine and ask questions, learning how to make the dish along the way. It’s a really fun night out for a couple or a group of friends. I like to think of it as educational dinner theater. $65 per person for most classes.

MAN IN THE KITCHEN

so it’s easier to read. It will set you back a cool hundred bucks, but if it helps to avoid a few overdone steaks or one case of food poisoning, it’s worth every penny. If that’s out of your budget, the Classic works just as well but doesn’t have all the bells and whistles and it only costs $79. If that’s too much, they also have more compact models like the ThermoPop and ProNeedle for less than thirty-five bucks. I have an MK4 and a Classic and use them just about every time I cook. If you’ve got a barbeque nut in the house, they also offer barbeque thermometers with as many as four separate probes. Certainly enough to earn some respect at your next block party.

The Perfect Cooking Tool If your foodie friend has a drawer full of gadgets that rarely see the light of day, here’s one they will use all the time: The Thermapen from ThermoWorks.com. This is simply the best instant-read thermometer available. If you really like this person, buy them the Thermapen MK4. It’s got a big, bright LCD screen, turns itself on and off automatically and even rotates the screen

So there you have it, a few sensible gifts for the foodie in your life; all verified by this hard-to-buy-for and hard-to-please curmudgeon. If you can’t make someone happy with at least one of these ideas, you may just want to throw in the towel, buy them a Visa gift card and not worry about them until next year. Until then, do yourself a favor, eat something good today. When Jim is not in the kitchen, you can find him at ADwërks, the ad agency he runs in downtown Sioux Falls.

HALLMARK CHRISTMAS MOVIES

AND WINE BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

DECEMBER 19 ALL AGES | 7:30 PM

VINO

Y

es, my wife has our DVR set to record all 22 of the new original movies on the Hallmark channel this holiday season. She can’t get enough of these movies, and, truth be told, I can’t either. I got sucked in one night, a few months ago, when my wife began watching a Hallmark movie about two people who are opposites that end up together because of fate (sound familiar?) I sat down and told myself, “I’ll just watch 5 minutes.” An hourand-a-half later I’m wiping my eyes because I got a little teary, and my wife has run our house out of tissues. Now, we are watching the Hallmark “Countdown to Christmas” movies. Christmas movies and wine? Why, yes, here’s what we’re drinking while we’re watching. Won’t you join us? It’s Christmas, Eve is an adorable movie starring Leann Rimes (yes, she sings a cute song) who falls for a music teacher. The problem is that she was hired as interim-superintendent to make cuts to the music department. Christmas miracle to the rescue. Since this movie involves a lot of music, I think a great pairing is a wine from Dreaming Tree. Owned by Dave Matthews (of Dave Matthews Band fame) and winemaker Sean McKenzie, Dreaming Tree brings two passionate people together, whether it’s finding the right notes or rhythms in a piece of music, or the right tones and flavors in a great bottle of wine. Like the saying goes... “Great minds drink alike.” Their red blend called Crush is a perfect pairing with this movie with its bright, juicy, and jammy flavors. Christmas at Pemberley Manor is another great Christmas miracle movie, this time involving a beautiful manor, a presumable miser,

and an outgoing leading woman. Since this movie is centered around a historical manor, the perfect pairing is a historical wine. There are two ways of doing this: one way is to pull a bottle you’ve been aging in your cellar. A 2006 Barolo will do. Or a 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet. If you don’t happen to have a well-aged bottle handy, your other alternative is to find a bottle that will become a well-aged bottle. Current vintage of Humanitas Cabernet from Napa Valley is a great example of a wine that tastes great now (presenting with tight tannins and stringent fruit,) and is going to taste even greater in a few years. Christmas Joy rounds out our recommendations as this movie climaxes at an event called the Cookie Crawl in North Carolina. With all the cookies in this movie, it makes me think of the perfect pairing with chocolate chip cookies: a decadent Merlot. Angeline Merlot Reserve or Duckhorn Merlot are two excellent choices for this movie as you sit back and watch the romance come together at the end. I hope you enjoy the suggested pairings above, and I hope you find a pairing for the other 19 movies Hallmark is releasing throughout the month of December. Just remember, it doesn’t matter if you find the perfect wine for the movie, just as long as you find the perfect partner to watch it with. Carpe Vino! Riccardo has been the wine columnist for etc. for her magazine since 2004. Riccardo and Marybeth Tarabelsi are the owners of R Wine Bar, located on the East Bank of Downtown Sioux Falls, and they have three sons, Dante, Berent, and Jaxon.

Many Advantages to Gift Shopping Vintage & Antique Gifts Year-Round BY LURA ROTI

KNICK KNACKS OF LIFE

T

ime, I’ve discovered, is a precious resource. And, like all the best resources, quite limited. So, when it comes to finding the perfect gift for family and friends, I like to save time during the holidays, by shopping rummage and estate sales year-round. I’m following in my mom’s footsteps. Growing up, the concept that a gift needed to be new to be given was foreign to the five of us kids. Yes, we did receive new gifts – mostly in the underwear and sock category. But, the best gifts were often the ones my mom would sew or find at thrift stores, rummage and estate sales. On Christmas Eve, my mom would lock her bedroom door and began pulling finds out of hiding and place them into piles. (I know this because one year, after my mom wrapped my gifts, she asked for some help wrapping my brothers’ presents.) Vintage books nearly always made up half of each pile. We’re a family of readers. And, I think my parents had something to do with this. For most of our childhood, our TV either didn’t work, or reception was poor, so when we weren’t doing ranch chores or homework, we spent much of our free time reading. (Full disclosure, I’ll be 40 this May, so these were the days before cell phones and internet.) Mom would hunt for old books at estate sales or thrift shops. I have an entire shelf of vintage Agatha Christie mysteries on my parlor bookcase that were Christmas gifts from my parents. There’s just something about old books ... I especially love it when they contain notes from previous gift givers. Most of the time these notes are from strangers. However, I do have an old fairytale book my mom handed down to me from my grandma. Inside the cover, is a note from my great-grandma to my grandma. My mom also sought out unique gifts that enhanced our hobbies or collections. Among my favorites are the vintage glass Christmas balls my mom began giving me when I was in high school. Many of them were still in their original boxes. And, even though I know my parents’ budget was stretched to the limit just providing the necessities for our large family, by Christmas morning, there were loads of gifts under the tree for each of us. Another advantage to shopping estate and rummage sales is oftentimes, even valuable items can be found at greatly reduced prices. This year, one of my favorite finds is for a close friend who favors Scandinavian Christmas décor. It is a beautiful Scandinavian-inspired, Christmas centerpiece. The note taped to the wax envelope protecting the Scherenschnitte art (German for scissor-cut), indicates that it was created in 1985. It looks like it has never been displayed. I cannot wait to see how my friend incorporates it into her holiday décor. I also found my mom’s Christmas gift in the Antique

Treasures room at the First Lutheran Bazaar. A pristine blue glass, Art Deco-inspired cream and sugar set. My mom has an affinity for blue glass. And, now that she’s an empty nester, she has blue glass displayed throughout her 1930s bungalow (to be enjoyed out of reach of grandchildren). Recently, she asked a friend to help her install glass shelves across the dining room windows so that the sun can backlight some of her favorite pieces. This is a display technique she got from her grandma. That’s the other thing about buying vintage or antique gifts, they come with stories or evoke memories. Where or how the item was found is part of the gift-giving experience. The backstory can be just as precious as the gift. To see some more of my Christmas gift finds, feel free to stop by my blog, Knick Knacks of Life at www.LRFreelance.com. About the author: An active preservationist and agriculture journalist, Lura Roti lives in an 1888 Folk Victorian home near the Cathedral Historic District. She shares her passion for all things antique, vintage and awesome with her husband, Shon and their 7-year-old daughter, Parker. Read more on her blog, Knick Knacks of Life at www.LRFReelance.com.

5 BENEFITS

of an Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic BY ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE

I

njuries and illnesses don’t always occur during business hours - but heading to the ER can be expensive and time-consuming. That’s why walk-in clinics are so great! Where else can you get high-quality care, with less wait, without an appointment? That being said, not all walk-in clinics offer the same kind of care.

WE’RE EXCITED TO SHOW OF F YOU R N EW HOME FOR EYE CAR E . With more space than our previous location, we have more technology to help with early detection of eye disorders. More frames to help you find your look. And more ways for you to feel comfortable. Stop by to see how we’re changing the face of eye care.

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

If you suspect a muscle, bone or joint injury, here are five benefits of an orthopedic walk-in clinic. 1. Specialized Expertise Primary care walk-in clinics are staffed with general practitioners for good reason. They see everything from colds and flu to chest pain and eye infections. An orthopedic walk-in clinic, on the other hand, specializes in bone, muscle and joint injuries. A medical specialist, with extensive training in orthopedics, will assess your injury and carefully evaluate the situation.

2. Coordinated Follow-up Care Whether you’ve broken a bone, torn a rotator cuff, hurt your back or encountered one of any number of orthopedic injuries, odds are your primary care physician will refer you to an orthopedic specialist for follow-up care. From initial diagnosis to ongoing care, it only makes sense to start the process at an orthopedic urgent care clinic. No need for unnecessary appointments.

3. Less Expensive than the ER Emergency rooms are for critical and life-threatening situations. If your orthopedic injury can’t wait, but it’s not life-threatening, save yourself the expense (and the long wait times) of an ER. Just like hospitals, an orthopedic walk-in clinic has the ability perform

X-rays, MRI’s, and other procedures. And because most are an extension of an orthopedic practice, the cost savings over an ER visit are substantial.

4. “What if” Sports Injuries Any athlete, or parent of a student athlete, knows the drill... something hurts, but it’s (probably) not broken. The coach says, “tough it out.” A friend says, “ice it.” These types of “what if” sports injury situations occur every day - and more often than not, athletes try to play through the pain. But what if they end up injuring themselves even more? Good news! An orthopedic walkin clinic can help diagnose the issue in a timely manner so they can start their recovery right away.

5. Hands, Wrists, Elbows, Feet, Ankles, Shoulders, Necks and Backs If you’re thinking “that’s just a list of body parts that could be giving me pain on any given day,” you’re right. Orthopedic walkin clinics specialize in bone, muscle and joint care. When you experience a sudden injury or pain that can’t wait, skip the primary care clinic or ER and go straight to the orthopedic experts.

Orthopedic Institute is proud to offer two OI Now walk-in clinics. In Sioux Falls at 810 E. 23rd Street, open Monday through Friday from 3 – 7 pm and on Saturdays from 11 am – 4 pm, and in Yankton at 1101 Broadway with walk-in and scheduled appointments available Monday –Friday from 9 am – 6 pm.

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, it is estimated that 1 in 8 adults is diagnosed with sinusitis each year, and $11 billion dollars spent on managing sinusitis in the U.S. But what is sinusitis and when should you see your doctor or an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon?

What is Sinusitis? Sinuses are hollow cavities filled with air located on either side of your nose. They have small openings connecting to your nasal passage. A primary purpose of sinuses is to make mucus, which with your nose, helps humidify and adjust the temperature of the air you breathe. During sinusitis, the tissue in your nose and sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen. This swelling blocks the sinus openings, causing mucus to get trapped and build up. Symptoms may include thick nasal drainage, reduced sense of smell, nasal congestion, facial pressure, facial pain and dental pain. These infections are frequently due to viruses, such as the common cold, but can turn into bacterial infections.

When to See a Doctor or an ENT Specialist? Because many sinus infections are viral, antibiotics can be ineffective. Symptoms usually get better over seven to ten days.

Many over the counter medications, such as nasal saline (salt water) sprays, nasal steroid sprays and decongestants, are effective at reducing the symptoms of viral sinus infections. Be sure to follow the medication instructions located on the packaging. Bacterial sinus infections typically start out as viral infections, but symptoms may not improve or may get worse after 10 days. In this case, your primary care physician might recommend starting an antibiotic. Some patients, however, have complications of sinusitis, have symptoms that never seem to go away after several weeks despite multiple courses of medications, or experience multiple infections a year. These individuals could benefit from evaluation by an ENT surgeon.

What a Specialist Offers ENT surgeons provide care and surgery for difficult cases of sinusitis where conventional methods failed. This initial evaluation may include: • Nasal endoscopy: placing a small camera into the nose, which allows ENTs to determine if there is a structural reason for symptoms. In people who have had sinus surgery, it is sometimes possible to see into the sinuses themselves. • Computed tomography (CT) scan: a special type of X-ray imaging technique that doctors use to virtually see into the sinuses, even in patients who have not had surgery.

Because of continued advancements in health care and technology, nasal surgery is more convenient than ever. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) uses tiny cameras and instruments in the nose. A more recent addition to the sinus surgery world is balloon sinuplasty, in which a balloon is inflated within a blocked sinus opening. This technique may be used alone or in conjunction with FESS. Sinus surgery is usually a same-day surgery where you can go home after recovering enough from anesthesia, and you are often able to return to a normal routine within a few days. Furthermore, because surgery is done through the nostrils, there is generally no outward sign you even had surgery.

Snowflake Painting Materials: Masking tape, paint, paintbrush, white paper. Instructions: Using masking tape, add to a piece of white paper to create the shape of a snowflake. Next, paint on some paint in your choice of colors, covering the tape. Let dry, then peel the tape off of the paper to expose the white snowflake underneath. You can also make any shape you want to, so get creative by making holiday shapes such as Christmas trees, reindeers, snowmen, Santa Claus, and more. Use various paint colors and add embellishments to really make this craft stand out.

Homemade Snow Materials: Baking soda and shaving cream. Instructions: This is so easy, only using 2 ingredients! To make the snow, mix baking soda and shaving cream until it is a good consistency, similar to real snow. The coolest thing is, it actually feels cold like snow when you are mixing it together! It’s a bit messy, so be prepared for a surface you are comfortable getting a bit of sticky baking soda mixture on. It’s a movable, squishy, and fun thing to play with for your kids, and a great way to practice making snow balls for when the good snow falls during the winter.

that her body can’t fight off infection as well,” says McKay. “If she gets the flu, she’s at a higher risk for hospitalization and – although rare – death.” Receiving the flu shot helps her body develop antibodies that protect against the flu virus. She can also pass those protective antibodies on to her baby through breastfeeding. And it’s not just mom who should get the flu shot. “It’s very important for all of the family members (6 months old and older) and caretakers to get the flu shot, as well. It protects not only them, but also the baby, from the flu virus.”

During pregnancy, a woman’s immune system undergoes changes that make her not only more susceptible to illness and infection, but it can also be more severe. “She’s considered immunocompromised, which simply means

McKay notes that pregnant women should only get the flu shot – not the Flu Mist nasal spray. The flu shot contains a “dead” virus that cannot give you the actual flu. On the other hand, the Flu Mist is considered a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). Because it

However, when it comes to whether or not pregnant women should get the flu vaccine, Kimberlee McKay, MD, an OB/GYN with Avera Medical Group, believes the answer is clear. “It’s very safe to get the flu shot while pregnant and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends it,” she says. In fact, a recent study shows that getting a flu shot reduces a pregnant woman’s risk of being hospitalized with flu by an average of 40 percent.

contains a weakened flu virus, it can cause mild signs or symptoms such as runny nose, fever, sore throat and nasal congestion.

Protecting the Entire Family from the Flu For Callee Bauman Wachter, a young mother with three kids under the age of six and one due next spring, getting the flu shot each year is a no-brainer. “With three little kids at home and one on the way, who has time to get sick?” she laughs. “As an expectant mother, you do so many things to take care of yourself. and vegetables and trying to be as healthy as possible. This is just another step in that direction.” Bauman Wachter has chosen to get the flu shot during each of her pregnancies and says that her husband and kids all receive the flu shot too. “Anything to make my life easier and prevent possible illness is important to us. I don’t feel nervous about getting the flu shot. It’s just part of being proactive about our health.” To learn more, read our frequently asked questions about the flu vaccine.

Books

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE WONDERFUL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN WE HAVE COME ACROSS THIS MONTH. WE HOPE TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE AND ALSO INTRODUCE OTHERS BEING RELEASED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ENJOY.

The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy It’s late on Christmas Eve, and the little fir tree is the only tree left in the shop. What a poor thing I am, it thinks. But then a young boy enters the store, drawn in from the damp by the warmth and lights and the wonderful smell of Christmas, and he doesn’t seem to mind that the scrawny tree isn’t tall and straight like the others. . . . This magical story, beautifully illustrated by Emily Sutton, captures an unexpected and unforgettable moment of happiness that brings a whole city together. Ages kindergarten - grade 3 candlewickpress.com

I Am Actually a Penguin by Sean Taylor When a little girl is given a penguin suit, she decides that living as a penguin is much more fun than just dressing as one. Penguins don’t ride the bus like people do, they don’t talk like people do, and they certainly don’t eat fish sticks like people do. Her family tells her, “You’re not actually a penguin.” But she knows that she ACTUALLY is. A hilarious new picture book about using your imagination — but also knowing that sometimes your costume needs to be washed! Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs candlewickpress.com

Another glorious lift-the-flap exploration of nature in the same series as Little Tree and Little Honeybee. Ages 2 yrs - 5 yrs candlewickpress.com

Since the days of the ancient Egyptians and throughout history cats have earned their reputation as affectionate, intelligent, clean, easily trainable, playful and fun family pets. As a cat owner, you probably agree. The American Association of Feline Practitioners and American Animal Hospital Association recommend a minimum of one annual wellness exam for cats, with more frequent exams for senior and geriatric patients, or those cats with medical or behavioral conditions.
