ack in 2015, Chrystal Rothenberger and her two sisters set out on adventure in a pink truck named “Betty.” They created a clear mission statement that continues today – “We create a community where women feel worth and empowered to embrace their inner beauty and the confidence to let it shine.” And so, the Paisley Pod was born. For the past four years, “the Pod” operated as a mobile truck that would visit events in the Sioux Falls and Brandon areas – even shopping parties at residences. Rothenberger took over sole ownership of the business in October 2016, she says, because her sisters were getting married and having children. While Betty will still make appearances at special pop-up events, the Paisley Pod now has a permanent home in the Holly Crossing Retail Center in Brandon. Rothenberger calls herself a “Brandon girl” and was both excited about the prospect of establishing a storefront in Brandon, and nervous about the transition from a mobile Pod to a stationary one. With a flip of a switch, though, their “pod’ had a new meaning. “The Paisley Pod isn’t just about a truck anymore,” she says. “Our ‘pod’ is now our community of customers who come here

not just to shop, but also to lift up and support each other.” In fact, if you join the Paisley Pod’s Facebook group or email list, you become part of the #PodSquad and get access to all the latest information about new items, sales, events and more. Remodeling the old Marco’s Pizza in the retail center was a big undertaking, but with the help of family and friends, Rothenberger saw her vision of an eclectic, farmhouse chic boutique come to life.

She is grateful for the hands-on help of her husband and three children, ages 10, 7 and 5, who helped with the demolition work at the store, as well as their support to make the store a reality. The white shiplap wall, wood floors and chandeliers with draped wooden beads add to the friendly, inviting atmosphere. During this winter season, the store is filled with stylish and colorful “layer-able” pieces – from tanks and tees to sweaters and scarves. The Paisley Pod carries sizes

small through 3XL. The layout is roomy and easy to navigate, with like items grouped together including a collection of KanCan jeans along one wall. Taking its name from the famous “cancan” dance, the brand seeks to create clothing in the latest designs yet still moves and stretches so women feel comfortable as they navigate their busy days. In addition to lines like Love Tree and Hailey & Co, Rothenberger has also found local artisans to showcase at the store,

“I want my customers to have a sense of peace and to be happier when they leave than when they walked in,” she says. “Our Paisley Pod community means the world to us, and we work hard every day to ensure they know and feel that each time they choose to hang out with us.”

including a wide array of purses from Rebekah Scott Designs and custom leather jewelry pieces from Tracy Vogt Designs, out of Crooks, S.D. After a long day of shopping, you can relax at home with one of the A Bombs products available at The Paisley Pod, such as handmade soaps, bath sprinkles and bombs and shower steamers. A Bombs is another local company operating in Salem, S.D. Paisley Pod can outfit you from head to toe this winter. Check out the selection

of warm headbands and hats from Love Your Melon, a company that operates a foundation to help children and families battling cancer. Then, for your feet, slip on a pair of cute sneakers or ankle boots. If you happen to be shopping for someone other than yourself, there are plenty of gift ideas and stocking stuffers here as well, like glammed-up grocery lists or a bright and cheery SoDak design on mugs and hats by Oh Geez! Designs located in the Black Hills.

Rothenberger’s goal is for everyone to leave the store feeling important. “I want my customers to have a sense of peace and to be happier when they leave than when they walked in,” she says. “Our Paisley Pod community means the world to us, and we work hard every day to ensure they know and feel that each time they choose to hang out with us.” Join the #PodSquad and experience the fun and fashion!

Joy to the World! How All Saints Sped Through Time BY RON ROBINSON | EDITED BY GAYLE EMMEL

T

he chapel was not a part of the original All Saints School in Sioux Falls, but on this winter night in the second half of the 20th Century, it was brimming with parents, teachers and students for what all must have imagined would be yet another comforting Christmas program with the familiar hymns, and all the familiar Bible readings. The invocation ended and those present were signaled to rise for the opening hymn. All scrambled to their feet. And then the music began and everything changed.

22 out and about |

HISTORY

The organist for the evening was Dr. Walter May, the music teacher and composer from Augustana College, who had been playing the instrument from the age of 13 and who had definite ideas about how hymns should be interpreted. If the hymn spoke of joy, as this one did, then the music should be joyful. The tempo, at least as fast again as any of those present had heard the piece played, literally took breaths away, and smiles, and even muffled laughter broke out as the music raced on and singers rushed to keep up. Joy to the

World, indeed! It was an appropriate All Saints moment. All Saints had by then become a revered institution even if it was not quite what its founder had visualized. Bishop William Hobart Hare was, after all, a man of vision. He did not finish college, and he never went to seminary, but when on All Saints Day, 1872, at the age of 34, he was elected Missionary Bishop of Niobrara, the river running along the border of Nebraska and Dakota Territory, he had been prepared sufficiently by parish work in the East

“The sum of the whole matter is this: the Indians are Men. We differ from them in degree, not in kind.“ Every Indian convert received a “Niobrara Cross,” which was designed by Hare. He became known as “the Apostle to the West.”

Bishop William Hobart Hare

and in Minnesota. He undertook his mission with the Indians with energy and zeal. He took advantage of the natural spirituality of the Indians to guide them to Christianity. To start with, it was clear to him that Wakantanka and God were one and the same, and that other spiritual similarities might also be employed to win over converts. But Hare went further than to simply bring the Christian message to the heathen. Again and again he took up their

cause because he fervently believed in their humanity: “The sum of the whole matter is this: the Indians are Men. We differ from them in degree, not in kind.“ Every Indian convert received a “Niobrara Cross,” which was designed by Hare. He became known as “the Apostle to the West.” Hare never lost interest in the Niobrara people, but the steady influx of European settlers and transients from the eastern U.S. was destined to change his mission.

In 1883, Bishop Hare’s diocese was extended to all of South Dakota. New churches were established. All Saints School was founded in 1884. Artemus Gale, a real estate agent, donated the land, a hill covering five acres on the south side of Sioux Falls. Donations of some $10,000 from the city were supplemented by other generous gift such as the $3,000 given by the wife of John Jacob Astor. All Saints was one of the first buildings designed by Wallace L. Dow after he moved to Sioux Falls in 1882, and he made it distinctive, indeed. Standing as it did on the rise overlooking the town from the south, it became something of a showcase for Dow’s work. The two-tone arches over windows and doors set it apart from every other building in town. Illinois Central and Rock Island passenger buildings and prominent structures at the University of South Dakota at Springfield, Dakota Wesleyan University, the U. of S.D. at Vermillion, and many more. None was more prominent or more easily identifiable than All Saints. Bishop Hare intended All Saints as a boarding school for girls, the children of missionaries and others. But he made sure that Dow included living quarters for Hare himself, located high in the building in order to give him a supreme view of the city. In those early days, when trees were still sparse and small, he must have had an unparalleled view of the young city that stretched out before him. The school opened in 1885 and Hare posed with the 14 boys and girls who were in the first classes, but by the very next year the boarders were exclusively girls, and soon they reached near capacity at 88. Meanwhile, Hare continued with his mission, visiting new congregations around the diocese, seeing to the building of Calvary Cathedral, fighting the laws that for a time made Sioux Falls a divorce capital. He travelled widely in Europe and also to Tokyo speaking of his experiences and his convictions. Always, however, he returned to All Saints in Sioux Falls which now was definitely home for him. Upon his death in 1909, he was buried for a time at the school before being reburied at Calvary Cathedral. He is honored with a feast day on the American liturgical calendar on his birthday, May 17. But even though Hare was gone, All Saints continued on as a boarding school under the guidance of the Peabody sisters. It wasn’t until after World War

II that other schools became plentiful enough that the boarding students were eliminated, but the school continued as a day school for decades more, catering to those who for whatever reason preferred a small private institution. Students benefitted from the close attention of teachers and from a discipline quite different from that offered by public schools. Nevertheless, enrollments dwindled and by the last decade of the century the school was no more. But wait! The buildings, at that point over a hundred years old, were still in fair shape and the location was exceptional. Before long the buildings had been repaired, re-structured, and repurposed.

Buildings, moreover, were added, wood frame assemblages, yes, but laminated with pink quartzite to resemble the original solid stone structures. Most importantly, perhaps, some doors and windows were arched with that unmistakable two-color, supercilious curve that was virtually, by that time, a trademark. The rooms filled with seniors in no time, and more buildings were added. Now Touchmark at All Saints boasts at least one tenant that only a few decades back had a student in the school. How long before former students will follow? Thus history flows, things change in ways nobody dreamed of, and life goes on. Hang on for the ride. Joy to the World!

hen the Santos family moved into their central Sioux Falls home five years ago, they loved the location but decided to start from scratch inside and create a place that was all their own. “It was a big undertaking, but we gutted the house when we bought it,” says Claire. “My mother-in-law is an architect, and she helped us create a layout that fit our family’s needs.” The Santos family includes Claire, her husband Arvin, and their daughters Sophia and Sachi. “We tore down a lot of walls, changed all the flooring, added windows and finished the basement,” she says, “so it really was a top-to-bottom project.” Claire describes the decorating style in the house as “transitional,” because she likes to mix both classic and modern elements. Starting with a foundation of white walls and white woodwork made it easy to create different experiences throughout the five bedroom, five bathroom house. One of the “classic” touches they added was wainscoting, which enhances the traditional feel of the living room. Tall windows flanking the fireplace and the chandelier hanging from the tall ceiling add to the elegance of the room, which is made more magical during the holiday season by the beautifully-decorated tree. The two Santos daughters have the fun job of picking out the holiday color theme each year. The “blushy peach” and silver floral and metallic decorations on the tree and the fireplace mantel are a lovely complement to the teal drapes and accent pillows on the white sofas.

The dining room has a simple elegance with its combination of a modern table with more formal, tufted button back chairs. The space also pairs a crystal chandelier with large, modern art on the wall in the cool accent colors with greens and blues that Claire loves. A single centerpiece on the table brings in similar elements from the Christmas tree decorations. The kitchen is spacious and bright, with modern elements, like the sleek stainless appliances and drop lighting over the large island, along with the teal pop-of-color cushions on the chairs of the eating area. Then, mixed in are traditional touches like a molding-shaped arch between the kitchen and dining room and the column corners on the island.

Everyone has a different approach to decorating for Christmas, and for the Santos family, it’s choosing simple accents that fit the room – like a floral arrangement blossoming out of a pair of white ice skates, a metallic poinsettia bloom tucked into evergreens or a glass bowl with ornaments in colors to match the annual holiday theme. Even the wrapping paper is a design element with the varied patterns and textures of blush and white. “The whole family helps decorate for Christmas,” says Claire. “It’s our favorite holiday! We typically host several gettogethers for friends and family in the weeks leading to Christmas. It’s a busy time for us, but also the happiest.”

MAN IN THE KITCHEN

Perhaps the best—and longest lasting of traditions — is remembering those we’ve loved and lost

I

think every family has Christmas traditions; whether it’s when the first of the presents are unwrapped, the touch-football game before the big feast or what you eat for dinner on Christmas Eve. There are holiday traditions that we all look forward to. And while those traditions seem as though they were carved in stone centuries ago and carefully passed down through the generations, many are probably not as old as you believe (or want to believe). Those well-worn memories that have shaped the family history have evolved over time. Grandma’s turkey recipe probably wasn’t passed down from her mother’s mother; it’s more likely that it came from the Better Homes & Gardens Cookbook she got back in the early seventies. So it is with my family. Many of the traditions I know and love were created as my siblings and I were growing up. Our family’s Christmas Eve seafood dinner (which in my heart had been happening for generations) didn’t actually start until my teenage

Commercial and Residential Cabinetry

years. After Christmas Eve dinner, we would always open just a few presents; and we always started with the gifts from Granny and Ed. Not really my grandmother, Granny was the affectionate name given to my great-aunt Shirley; Ed was her lovable and curmudgeonly husband. They travelled a lot and always sent great, and sometimes, exotic gifts. As I recall, it was usually my dad who would needle my mom until she’d give in and let us open those gifts. While it seems like we’d been doing that forever, it really started when I was in college. The age-old traditions we recall, often came into existence fairly recently, but we enjoy them so much we want to believe it has always been that way. Often it’s the birth of a child, a move to a new home or some monumental family shift that gives rise to these traditions. Sometimes they just shift from one group to another, and sometimes they spring out of nowhere. There are some traditions that live on well after their creator has passed, and others fade as

the driving force behind them dies. My beloved and I find ourselves at another time when traditions are shifting. My Dear Old Dad passed away five years ago; some of his favorite customs have gone with him. 25 years ago he and I would make his “Oysters Dad” recipe in the kitchen together. Shucking each bivalve, wrapping it in bacon, seasoning with white wine and scallions before broiling them in the shells. As his health began to fail, I would do the shucking and wrapping while he supervised. Later still he would sit in the living room and wait for me to bring him a couple. I haven’t made them since he died, and not because the memory is too painful, but because he and I enjoyed them far more than anyone else; so to make them today seems a waste. My beloved’s father Howard left us three years ago at Christmas time. His holiday favorite was a turkey dinner with all the fixings, and in his mind, you simply could not cook too much turkey. I learned this even before we got married; for the four of us her mom would often cook a 20-pound bird. They’d send us home with a few leftovers—enough for a meal or two. The remaining 12 pounds of turkey, 4 pounds of potatoes, a casserole of sweet potatoes and a quart of cranberry salad would stay with my inlaws. And since they were both raised during the depression, I can assure you not an ounce went to waste. After we’d been married a while, I’d offer to bring a few items to holiday meals. My list grew with each passing year, until the feast

moved to our house. For the first of those holidays, my mother-inlaw would bring a few dishes, and the tradition slowly transitioned to one where I did all the cooking. But one thing did not change; we still roasted a turkey far larger than the four of us could eat in one sitting. My in-laws would take possession of most of the leftovers and they never let a scrap of leftover go uneaten. When my mother-in-law moved to assisted living, the oversized bird become a turkey breast. She gets three meals a day and really doesn’t need the leftovers. And we are usually traveling to see my family the next day, so any extra would go to waste. Last year I skipped the turkey altogether and made a bourbon-honey glazed bone-in pork roast. I kind of hope that the pork roast becomes a new tradition. I loved it and it was fun to cook. Don’t worry, we ate every last scrap. The seafood feast on Christmas Eve has scaled back too. Instead of seven or more pescatarian delights, we now have two or three. We still share wine and laughs and eat too much. It is still an indulgent and joyful meal, just on a smaller scale. And we will raise a glass to Dear Old Dad, Howard, and Granny and Ed. While they are no longer with us, perhaps the best—and longest lasting of traditions—is remembering those we’ve loved and lost. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today. An Italian Christmas:

LA BEFANA & PANETTONE BY RICCARDO TARABELSI

I

remember waking up on January 6th in 1978, running to the living room chimney to find my stocking full of candy and little toys. I remember not believing my eyes. I remember exclaiming to my parents, “La Befana found me in America too!!!” I was five-years-old, and it was my first Christmas in the United States. My parents did everything they could to make it feel like home; more like Italy: we had Panettone cake, we had Advent calendars, we had Parmigiano Reggiano, we had tortellini with freshly made bolognese, we had the smells and the tastes and the decorations, but I was still worried about one thing… Would La Befana find me? La Befana is one of Italy’s oldest and most celebrated legends. Each year on January 6th, the children of Italy awaken in hopes that La Befana has made a visit to their house. This is a significant day to Italians because it marks the end of the Christmas season

and the day that the three Wise Men arrived at the manger of the Christ child. Over the years, the Epiphany has been a more celebrated holiday for the children of Italy than even Christmas. As legend has it, the three Wise Men were in search of the Christ child when they decided to stop at a small house to ask for directions. Upon knocking, an old woman holding a broom opened the door slightly to see who was there. Standing at her doorstep were three colorfully dressed men who were in need of directions to find the Christ child. The old woman was unaware of who these three men were looking for and could not point them in the right direction. Prior to the three men leaving, they kindly asked the old woman to join them on their journey. She declined because she had much housework to do. After they left, she felt as though she had made a mistake and decided to go and catch up with the kind men. After many hours of searching she could

not find them. Thinking of the opportunity she had missed, the old woman stopped every child to give him or her a small treat in hopes that one was the Christ child. Each year on the eve of the Epiphany, she sets out looking for the baby Jesus. She stops at each child’s house to leave treats in their stockings for those who were good and a lump of coal for those who were bad. To this day, I still hang my stocking on the night of January 5th in hopes that La Befana will remember me as that little boy who wished to be found on the other side of the globe. My wife and I have passed on this custom to our children, telling the enchanting story of that kind old lady who will fill their stockings a week-anda-half after Santa Claus does. Another Italian holiday tradition is a special cake called Panettone (pronounced PAH-NEH-TOE-NEH.) Northern Italy’s traditional Christmas cakes, known as Panettone, are goldenbrown and shaped like giant mushrooms. There are lots of theories about the famous Panettone, but the most romantic of all the tales is that of a Milanese baker named Toni di Borgo alle Grazie. Toni ran his shop with a stern hand, as he did the life of his young and beautiful daughter, Adalgisa. Because of this, his faithful employee, Ughetto della Tela, knew that he would never receive Toni’s consent to marry Adalgisa, despite the love between the two, unless he could somehow raise his status from that of a “low-life” kitchen hand. Thus, to win Adalgisa’s hand, Ughetto worked feverishly after-hours creating a bread that would be sweeter and richer than anything the city had ever had in the past. Through wordof-mouth, friends of Ughetto soon came into Toni’s shop asking for the special bread containing flour, sugar, candied fruits, and grapes. The bread became an instant success. But rather than taking the credit himself, Ughetto gave the fame to Toni. And soon all of Milan was asking for “Toni’s bread” or “pan ad Toni.” The true inventor of the new treat did not mind, however. He soon became one of the family - Adalgisa was his forever. With that, I give you a Panettone recipe for you to enjoy with your friends and family over the holidays. Buon Natale, Buone Feste, e Buon Anno! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!

Over the River and Thru the Woods…

IS THAT A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN? BY LURA ROTI

46 nest |

KNICK KNACKS OF LIFE

O

K, I have a confession to make…I have no sense of direction. As in, I was born without an inner compass. Yes, it’s a thing. Some people always know where they are, and how to get home. And as long as they know in about which direction their destination is, they have no issue finding it for the first time. I, on the other hand, need solid directions, preferably with turns given to me as rights and lefts, not the compass direction. If I am given good directions, I will arrive at my destination a few minutes early. Now getting home…sometimes I need directions for that as well. As an agriculture journalist, this could be a handicap. You see, the best part of my job is visiting families on their farms or ranches, which more times than not are in areas of our state where there is no cell service. However, there are two factors which help me overcome this obstacle. First and foremost, I am not secretive about my inability to know which way is north. And the many South Dakota farmers and ranchers I’ve interviewed over the years have been very kind and patient. Once I explain to them that I’m directionally challenged, they carefully give me the easiest, most direct route. It may not be the fastest, but I do arrive. And second, not long after I graduated high school, most all farms and ranches received 911 addresses, which included a unique set of numbers for emergency responders. Before this, I depended on my odometer and landmarks to make sure I was at the right place - old trees, barns or references to neighbors long gone. “Our farm is just a quarter mile past the old Johnson Place.” Unfortunately, the Johnson Place never made it on the map. I love maps. The summer I interned for a magazine in western Kansas, I would highlight my routes before heading off to interview farmers in Kansas, Colorado and Oklahoma. I would often stop at the nearest town and use a pay phone to call and review the directions one last time. Often reminding them that I wasn’t from

“around here,” so I didn’t know the Johnsons. And I somehow found every single farm. I will say, the most embarrassing issue with not having a good sense of direction is the fact that if I am in a rural area, even if it’s close to where I grew up in western South Dakota, I cannot find my way anywhere without good directions. One time, right before my senior prom, I was driving home from a friend’s on a Sunday afternoon, and I somehow took a left when I should have taken a right and got turned around. When I realized I was lost, I tried to drive back to her house, but I couldn’t find it. Time went by and I was not any closer to hitting the main highway, so when I saw a ranch house in the distance, I decided to stop and ask for help. When I got out of my car, a large dog came to greet me. Although I’m a “dog person,” he was not excited to see me. I called out to see if anyone was home and there was no answer, so I got back in my car and kept driving. It started to get dark. I was nearly out of gas. These were the days before cell phones. I started to cry. Honestly, I don’t know how I made it home. After that incident, before I left a friend’s home, I made it a habit to ask which way I should turn out of the driveway. As an adult, I write this down

right when I arrive. Amazing, how if I start off heading in the correct direction, I make it home without having to back track. Backtracking is something Shon and I do a lot. Especially when we cannot use our GPS. You see, luckily my husband suffers from the same challenge. The reason I count myself fortunate is, folks who aren’t directionally challenged quickly lose patience with those of us who are. Believe me. I dated enough before I met Shon to know my lack of direction tests even the most patient of folk who can’t relate. Just last winter, we were on our way to North Dakota to spend the holiday with my youngest brother and his family. About the time we should have arrived at his ranch, we realized we missed a turn. It was dark and we didn’t have cell reception. We pulled over to check the map and a rancher pulled over to see if we needed help. After Shon explained that we were heading to North Dakota and asked if we should turn around and take the turn we missed, or keep heading the way we were going? The cowboy replied, “it’s a horse either way.” We arrived two hours late. I felt bad because I had offered to bring homemade lasagna for supper. Fortunately, my family was understanding, albeit ravenous. At this stage, they understand.

n adorable little Bavarian town in central Michigan, Frankenmuth, is full of German culture and traditions as well as the largest Christmas shop in the world. Settled in 1845, by a group of Germans from the province of Franconia, Bavaria, the town of Frankenmuth is known as Michigan’s “Little Bavaria”, and is known to enhance the Christmas spirit with its charming Franconia-style architecture and Bavarian hospitality. getaway to Frankenmuth will not disappoint. You will find old school carriage rides, comfort food, beautiful holiday lights and decorations galore, lots of fluffy white snow, and more. When the holidays come around, Frankenmuth is not surprisingly glowing bright with Christmas cheer. The day after Thanksgiving, light installations and decorations start going up for the Holiday Celebration and Candlewalk. From lampposts

to storefronts, decorations adorn the cozy town from top to bottom. Draped in trimmings and tinsel, and glowing with star streamers and twirling lights, it is all things Christmas along Main Street. In fact, TIME magazine named Frankenmuth one of the top nine most Christmas-y towns in America! The European heritage and influence is very evident come Christmas time, when the farmers market is transformed into

Christkindlmarkt. It truly becomes the most magical time of the year as it is surrounded by German candies and cookies, handmade mittens, fresh evergreen garlands and wreaths, scented bar soaps, and so much more. The holiday vibes will blow you away, with local artists, bakers, growers, and makers filling heated tents for two full weekends, offering made-to-order creations, cooking sauces, clothing, home-baked goods, and many other holiday

HEALTH & WELL-BEING

W

hen Tracy Vogt entered Sanford Health’s new walk-in clinic at the Sanford Sports Complex near Interstate 29 and Benson Road on a Monday morning, the workers seemed a little over-the-top excited to see her. It was like they were about to throw her a party or something. Vogt, a mom of three with her own jewelry design business who lives in Crooks, had arrived in less than half the time it used to take her to travel to a Sanford Health acute care clinic. So she was about as happy as she could be with a pain that hadn’t cooperatively vanished overnight. Vogt had noticed the walk-in clinic under construction as she drove her daughter to volleyball games at the Sanford Pentagon. So when she thought gallstones were causing her pain, she was greeted excitedly at the clinic with, “We didn’t know if we’d have anybody today,” Vogt recalls. Confused, she asked them, “So you don’t have very many people right away?” They replied back, “No, you’re the first patient.” “Of the day?” she asked. “No, ever.” Vogt, who estimates that her family uses acute care four times a year, was impressed with the brand-new facility – and the amount of attention she received as the inaugural patient. In fact, when she discovered that her kids could also get their flu shots there, Vogt came back with them after school. “It worked out great,” she said. So since the clinic opened at the end of September, “I’ve been there

twice,” she said. Vogt is excited to trim her typical trip to acute care from 22 minutes – at Sanford Health’s 26th Street and Sycamore Avenue location – to 10 minutes. “So many people will be so happy who live on the north end or outside of Sioux Falls because it’s just a convenience,” she remembers telling the clinic workers. Now Sanford Health is well-positioned to serve patients without appointments all over Sioux Falls as quickly as possible – just short trips to five walk-in clinics. In addition to the north-end Sanford Sports Complex clinic and the east-side 26th and Sycamore site, the 10th Street and Phillips Avenue clinic serves residents and the business community downtown. The 32nd Street and Ellis Road location serves the west side of Sioux Falls, and the 69th Street and Minnesota Avenue clinic serves the south side. So wherever people live, work, go to school or go to day care, they have convenient options for a quick trip to a walk-in clinic for anything that comes up. For a family like the Vogts, where school, sports practices and work already keep them plenty busy, this convenience is priceless. Especially when things such as ear infections arise at the least convenient times, like in the evening or on weekends, when they can’t see their primary care doctors. “When you go into an acute care facility, you want some type of relief or answers to something,” Vogt said. “I feel that they do a very good job of communicating with you and getting you what you need to go on throughout your day.”

Ensure Safe Play With These Toy Tips BY PATRICIA BATES, FAMILY LIFE EDUCATOR, AVERA HEALTH

T

oys can help infants explore and learn about the world around them. Parents need to think about safety when purchasing toys. Infants and young toddlers love to explore by putting things in their mouths which can cause some serious safety concerns. • Toys for infants and toddlers should be at least 1 1/4 by 2 1/4 inches; consider purchasing a choke tester tube to check toy size.

• Check toys for small removable parts or broken pieces as these can be choking hazards. • Immediately discard any packaging from a new toy including plastic, plastic ties and small cardboard pieces. • Be very careful of toys, books, greeting cards and games that

PARENTING & PREGNANCY

contain nickel cadmium “button” batteries; these can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. • Discuss toy safety with older children so that they know to keep toys with small parts out of reach of infants and toddlers.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER: • Toys should be age appropriate. Pay attention to age recommendations and consider a child’s interests and skill level. • Make sure toys can be cleaned or washed and pay attention to flammability of toys. • Choose toys that are colorful, have various textures, and are made of non-toxic materials.

• Find a website that lists recalls for children’s toys and equipment. • Be cautious of homemade toys or craft show toys. Be sure they are painted with non-toxic paint and follow safety guidelines.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR PETS 1. SECURE THE TREE Make sure the tree is secure in the stand so pets don’t accidentally push it over.

2. CHOOSE ORNAMENTS WISELY

5. STAY AWAY FROM DANGEROUS HOLIDAY PLANTS

Ornaments, tinsel and lights can cause serious hazards. Keep both breakable ornaments and small stuffed ones out of reach

Some Holiday plants that can cause severe illness in dogs and cats are holly and mistletoe

3. AVOID GIVING YOUR PETS FRAGILE GIFTS If you choose to give your pet gifts for the holiday, make sure the presents are big enough to minimize the choking hazard.

4. KEEP HARMFUL FOODS AWAY FROM PETS Sweet, fatty and spicy foods that we commonly eat during the holidays are certainly not intended for pets and can cause an upset stomach or even lifethreatening illness.

6. CREATE A SAFE HAVEN FOR YOUR PETS DURING PARTIES During parties, some pets can become overstimulated and stressed out, so have a safety spot available.

7. PREVENT YOUR PET FROM SLIPPING OUT With all the people coming in and out of your door, it can be easy for a pet to sneak outside. Have your pet’s microchip and tag information up-to-date.
