Owner Joanne Bogus has three decades of experience in the hospitality industry, with leadership in organizations such as RitzCarlton, Hard Rock Café and Walt Disney World. She relocated to Sioux Falls, bringing her passion for cooking and baking that started many years ago in the kitchen with her mother. She and her “food mechanics” team at the store offer practical help — and live demonstrations — to inspire people to

explore new things in their home kitchens.

The store is stocked with all the essentials to make everything from salads and stirfrys to pastas and pastries. Throughout the week, the team hosts events at the store such as Gadgets Galore, Into the Frying Pan and Saturday Bake Shop, so you can see how their products work...and even taste recipes you can make at home. They keep updated information on their website and social media, as well as a twice-monthly newsletter that includes promotions, new product

highlights and recipes.

As they demonstrate the latest in cookware or handy gadgets, the experienced team can also provide advice on stocking your cupboards to boost both efficiency and creativity in the kitchen. If you need a little something for your pantry, you’ll soon be able to find a variety of fine cutlery such as Wüsthof and food products like condiments, sauces and spices. They currently carry Neilson Massey, which they call “one of the best vanillas on the market.”

If you are looking for a unique social event with family, friends or coworkers, Joanne and her team can organize a private cooking class with a culinary experience designed just for you. These small gatherings provide an opportunity for you to enjoy watching professional chefs and her team at work — or to jump in yourself and gain some hands-on practice in the kitchen. Cooks & Bakers Kitchen can offer wine, beer and nonalcoholic beverages as part of their private events and classes.

Looking for a gift for someone who enjoys cooking or a housewarming gift for your new neighbor? The team can also create one-of-akind gift baskets with fun themes like Dinner in Italy, Family Pizza Night or simply Kitchen Essentials (perfect for that young adult in their first home).

There are stories in history books about towns that disappear from the maps, because for some reason, they could not be saved. Yet the very fact of their existence gives rise to intriguing questions because they had a start, a purpose and a destination before they weakened and died. These towns attracted people and promise. Like others, Ben Clare experienced the hammer and nails of optimism so unique to the American West. And for these reasons, historians and history buffs alike will not allow these communities to vanish completely. To do so would be like allowing an important part of memory itself to die and that, for a historian, is unthinkable.

Ben Clare came into being in 1888, just as the great Dakota Boom was winding down. It was built along the Illinois Central Railroad and served eastern Minnehaha County as did its neighbors, Rowena, East Sioux Falls and Valley Springs. Its founder, Benjamin B. Richards named it after his two sons: Benjamin and Clarence. In a short period of time, the usual forms of enterprise were created, including shops, grain elevators, homes, a post office and a train depot. A Methodist-Episcopal Church was built in

1890, and like a solitary reminder of the past, it still stands.

The town almost needed a hanging tree because of a nasty quarrel that erupted and festered between some of its citizens that resulted in a well-publicized homicide. One of the parties was a man named Frank R. Bowen, a leading grain dealer. He came to Ben Clare in 1892, and purchased the town site from Richards, and thereafter he established himself as a quarrelsome and boisterous man who made more enemies than friends. He was out of place in the quiet, peaceful town because he was hard-headed and difficult to deal with, insisting that he came out on top of any transaction to which he was a party. A biographer once called Bowen a “young man of sterling character and marked business acumen.” But to those who had to endure his oppressive behavior, the biography was a white-wash.

The feisty Bowen first became the center of controversy in January of 1895. It began with a dispute over money and land, but it took on religious and ethnic undertones as it became more intense. Bowen was an Irish Catholic living among others who were predominantly

Scandinavian-Protestant. He was a Democrat whereas most of his associates were Republicans. Bowen and his neighbors grew to dislike one another because of a disagreement over the actual town site, and while mired down in the dispute, the ethnic and religious differences added to the bad blood.

Bowen stubbornly refused to sell or lease town lots to aspiring businessmen at reasonable rates. He owned the land upon which the Post Office was built, along with the site of the Illinois Central Railroad depot, a hotel, and several other businesses. He also owned several home building sites. The anger directed at the unreasonable Bowen was hampering the growth of the new town. As such, the townsmen called a meeting to address Bowen’s outrageous attitude toward them. Bowen attended the meeting, in January of 1895, but refused to budge an inch from his unreasonable stance.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a resolution condemning Bowen’s action and attitude was passed. In it, the townspeople stated that “lots cannot be purchased at reasonable prices by those who would engage in mercantile businesses,” and those who

wanted to start a business, were “sent away.” In conclusion, the citizens of Ben Clare agreed to move their town site to a place where “lots can be sold or given away to businessmen.”

Unmoved and further angered by this resolution, Bowen became unhinged and was arrested for using vile and foul language during the meeting. Soon thereafter, he pleaded guilty to the charge in nearby Valley Springs and paid a fine of $17.50. Despite this chastisement, Bowen was unmoved and unchanged. If anything he was even more angry and in the mood to sue his neighbors.

About three weeks after the town meeting, John O. Johnson, another local land owner came forward. He generously agreed to lease or rent land for business purposes. The lease was for twenty years with free rent for the first five years. Thereafter, the rent would be $3.00 per acre, with a maximum frontage of 50 feet on Second Avenue. Upon the expiration of the twenty-year lease, the lots would be sold by Johnson at a price fixed by three disinterred parties. The happy folks began to move onto Johnson’s land and defiantly called their new town “North Ben Clare.” Truly, Ben Clare had a friend in Johnson.

The next episode of the bitter struggle came on March 1, 1895, about a week before the mass exodus to the new town site. Bowen’s anger was at a white-hot point as he was upset over losing to a bunch of Scandinavians. He hired a man named Edward Harvey to beat up a Scandinavian man that Bowen disliked above all others, agreeing to pay Harvey’s fine in exchange for his services as a ruffian. Harvey assaulted and battered the man as he promised to do, but Bowen refused to pay the fine of $13.00. An enraged Harvey demanded that Bowen pay as promised, but the Irishman chose to run from away, causing a local journal to state that he “was not much of a fighter.”

Ben Clare didn’t have a newspaper, but other local papers took note of the loud and angry feud that was taking place near South Dakota’s border with both Iowa and Minnesota. On March 7, 1895, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader featured a colorful account of the affair. Noting that several businesses

had already moved onto Johnson’s land, the Argus-Leader informed its readers that the Norwegian flag was hoisted in the town square of North Ben Clare and that the Stars and Stripes were on display at the blacksmith

shop, while the Irish flag drooped at half-mast in the original town site, symbolizing the defeat of Frank H. Bowen.

After such a public humiliation, one might think that Bowen would leave Ben Clare, but he stayed and continued to be a successful grain dealer. Over time, however, the town Bowen refused to leave began to slip away. The post office was abandoned in January 1901, and for some weeks the mail traveled by train back and forth between Sioux Falls and Cherokee, Iowa, until finally, the federal government informed Ben Clare residents that they should pick up their mail in Rowena.

Then in 1903, a tragic event struck the prairie town with what could be called a death blow. On February 27, 1903, an angry Frank H. Bowen was shot and killed by Harry Stelgard, the station agent at the Illinois Central Railroad depot. Stelgard, described as nervous and hysterical, had quarreled with the incorrigible Bowen over a $2.00 demurrage that the Irishman owed on a load of coal. The two men had quarreled in the past and both lived to talk about it, but Bowen refused to pay the $2.00 and as a result, he was shot by Stelgard with a .38 caliber revolver, while wounding Bowen’s 12 year-old son with a second shot.

Stelgard was charged with murder and despite Bowen’s reputation as a bully, there were the usual public rumblings about hanging the station agent. His defense was that of insanity, an unpopular legal strategy that was labeled the “insanity dodge.” And yet it only took the jury an hour and five minutes to find Stelgard not guilty by reason of insanity. He was committed to the state mental facility in Yankton. Thereafter both Bowen and Stelgard fade from the record, while the town of Ben Clare continued its decline.

Little by little, buildings and homes were torn down or moved to other locations. The post office officially closed in 1912. The Illinois Central continued to run trains through the area until 1988, when the tracks were removed. Aside from the church, there is only one house left that bears the appearance of having been built during the brief, but hectic, hey-day of Ben Clare.

Manybungalow-style homes built around 1920 in the city’s core featured a collection of separate rooms, in contrast to the open floor plans you see in today’s modern homes.

When Landon Blow and Tyler Jacobsen Blow started renting a house in the Whittier neighborhood in 2015, they didn’t think so

much about the actual floorplan.

“We moved in as 20-somethings, and it was just a place for us to live and hang out with friends,” says Tyler.

Within a few years, though, the two decided to buy the house and start the process of truly turning it into a home. They did a

little cosmetic work themselves, adding paint here and there along with eclectic accessories they found, which is one of the things they love to do together.

There were some features of the house, however, that they dreamed of “someday” being able to change like opening up the

kitchen and dining room that were separated by a wall. Fortunately, they happened to have good friends named Chelsea and Cole DeBoer, known now for their HGTV show Down Home Fab.

Landon and Chelsea met over a decade ago when he was finishing school and starting a

career as a hairstylist, and Chelsea became a client. Tyler, who is a photographer, captured many special moments for Chelsea and Cole, including their wedding and birth announcements for their children.

“One day Chelsea reached out because they were looking for homes to feature,” says

Landon, “and she asked if Tyler and I would be interested.”

The couple, who were married last year, describes their style as nostalgic and retro mixed with dark and moody drama. That was all the design team needed to get the renovations underway.

The flooring in the main living space was a light wood laminate, but the construction team discovered original hardwood flooring underneath. However, it wasn’t in perfect condition, so rather than try to restore and stain it, they painted it black instead.

“We love the floor,” says Tyler. “It gave us that bit of nostalgia to have the character of the original house, but it also fits our style.”

The white walls in the living room originally had white painted crown molding, but the design team kicked that up a notch by removing the original molding and replacing it with gold-painted molding, giving it the appearance of picture frames on the walls. The electric fireplace and wood mantel in the room were replaced with a Victorian mantel

with intricate design details, painted pink and then filled with a collection of different sizes of disco balls. Favorite albums line the top of the mantel - currently featuring albums that provide the “summer vibe.”

Tyler and Landon work out of their business, The Factory Salon + Studio, located in The Cascade downtown, and the logo includes a little skull.

The arched entry to the dining room had been so low that both Landon and Tyler almost had to duck under it. The arch still exists to keep the original charm of the house, but it was raised to create more of a flow from the living room. The other surprise for them was the wall that had separated the dining room and kitchen was gone.

“Before, with the two rooms separated, it had such a choppy feel,” Tyler explains. “We would actually do food prep on the table in here, but it wasn’t like it fit with the living room or fit with the kitchen.”

The construction crew found layers of flooring in this space, so trying to get down to an original floor wasn’t possible. Instead,

oversized black and white vinyl tile provides both an economical and classy-yet-whimsical foundation for the rest of the design. Green cabinets coordinate with the green sofas in the living room and the tall stools around the dining room table, the top of which was made by Landon’s dad. The design team changed the base to sturdy steel to bring in a little industrial feel.

Light pink walls — the same color as the living room fireplace — let the green cabinets stand out with their copper hardware. Black and white quartz countertops complement the flooring and connect to the black flooring in the living room and entryway. The exposed shelving and the hood over the range bring in another texture with light-colored wood.

Balancing some of the “dark and moody” is the light and airy entryway space that Landon and Tyler had previously created by taking out a wall that separated the front entry from a small sunroom. Now, it is a roomy area with an L-shaped, wooden window seat that is also

a product of Landon’s dad’s handiwork. With the afternoon sun coming in, it’s the perfect place to stretch out for some reading or a nap (which their furry friends Pax and Banjo have already figured out). Landon’s dad also created the tabletop in the entryway, giving them a place

for plants and pictures and other fun finds.

Now, as a married couple out of their 20s and moving into their 30s with successful businesses, Landon and Tyler appreciate even more the difference between having a “house” and creating a home.

Marks Passage of Time

Aboveground pools – is there anything more disruptive to landscape and overall backyard beauty? Which is a kind way to say, “I think they are ugly!”

In response to the initial question: Maybe trampolines?

Soon we will have both.

Of course, the reason is our middle-school-age daughter, Parker. Too old for childcare during the summer months and too young for a summer job, once her household chores are done, each summer day she has a few hours to fill before I’m finished with work and her afternoon activities begin.

Because I work from home, she has the benefit of not being home alone. However, I am working much of the day, so she said life can get “boring.”

Now, I am not opposed to boredom. In fact, I’ve heard that it’s a beneficial state of mind many miss out on in today’s tech-savvy world. An article on Mayo Clinic’s website says: “A little boredom for children and adults can be a good thing. It can simulate creativity and problem-solving, while giving the brain time to recharge.”

I do believe a little boredom can go a long way though. And I do want her summer memories to be fun. During previous summers, I would schedule for her friends to come over to play.

As a 12-year-old, she is in charge of this now –and it seems like when they come over, they are on their phones a bit too much. Parker has screentime limits, but I don’t feel like I can impose these on others. So, on an early June day of about 90 degrees, when she asked if we would consider getting an above ground pool, I thought, “why not?”

Now that she is nearly 5-feet-tall and can swim, and her friends can swim, a pool deep enough to swim in, but shallow enough that they can always touch bottom, does not seem like a dangerous risk. And above ground pools are not that expensive.

Frankly, the only reason I was hesitant is the way

they look. Flower gardening and landscaping are my summer hobbies. Working in my gardens gives me endless satisfaction and provides me with the daily brain re-boot I need. So, the idea of a 12-foot diameter blue blob interrupting the peaceful oasis of my backyard is not one I love.

In the past, I would make the excuse that because the city pools are so close we don’t need a pool of our own. But, I still don’t feel comfortable dropping her off and leaving to work. And since a big reason to get the pool is so she can be busy with friends while I am working, it does need to be in our backyard.

So, after hours of hunting for a pool small enough to fit in its designated space, but deep enough to actually swim in, I clicked the “add to cart” button.

As we wait for the pool to arrive, Parker and I have been busy leveling the ground. Working with Parker to get ready for her pool has been a joy. Gone are the days of whining whenever I ask for her help…which is helpful in and of itself.

Fortunately, the area reserved for the pool was previously where her swings were, and the ground is covered with a layer of mulch. It is also helpful that the location is beside her abandoned sandbox (only our Golden Retriever Tulip plays in there now). This allows us to easily incorporate sand where necessary, making for a relatively easy task.

Leveling the ground for this pool is also a task that marks the passage of time. It replaces the swings she is too big for and uses sand from a box she hasn’t played in for years.

One more reminder that our little girl is growing up.

I know soon she will be old enough for summer jobs. Old enough to drive. Old enough that she will no longer want to invite her friends over to swim in an above ground pool. When that time comes, I’m sure I will be sad to say goodbye to the ugly blue blob.

Grillin’ with Wine

RecentlyI was at a friend’s house for a family barbecue. The kids were playing in the backyard (where my middle son almost crashed into a brick wall with a four-wheeler; different story for a different time,) the host was grilling up burgers and brats, and I was having a cold beer. As guests were arriving to this fun gathering, I started noticing a pattern: people walking in were exchanging greetings with everyone, but when they arrived to where I was sitting, they all said the same thing to me, “You’re drinking beer?!”

My response to everyone was the same, “C’mon, am I that much of a wine snob?!”

I had already poured a glass of pinot noir for my wife and a cabernet for a friend, but there was just something enticing about an ice-cold beer on a warm day to pair with a juicy burger. Truth be told, I did sneak a couple of sips out of my wife’s glass when she wasn’t looking just to cleanse my palate from the beer! Maybe my friends were right about me…just in case you’re like me, and would rather have wine with your grilled cuisine, here are some wine suggestions for all the barbecues this summer will bring.

Zinfandel will be able to handle a wide variety of red meats. This bold red wine bellies up to meaty, smoky flavors – allowing the varietal’s black pepper spice, acidity, and ripe tannins to carry the meat’s fats and texture to a new dimension. A Zin will also work well with barbeque sauce, steak sauce, and mild salsas – if there is too much spice in the sauce the two will compete, and both the wine and the sauce end up as losers.

Merlot is the spicy sauce answer to the above dilemma. With the characteristic fruit-forward flavor profile, this varietal will support the spice and not aggravate it. Grilled pork chops, chicken, and gardenvariety salads with lighter dressings also mingle well with Merlot.

Shiraz/Syrah is another varietal that makes the grill-friendly wine list. This varietal is delicious with just about any red meat. Offering dynamic, somewhat aggressive fruit flavors, balanced with more mellow tannins and a softer-fuller body – this wine’s place to shine is definitely at a barbecue gathering. Rhône Syrahs tend to have a smokier flavor characteristic and lend themselves extremely well to smoked brisket.

Cabernet Sauvignon is made for steaks with a higher fat content, and burgers of beef or turkey will pair equally well. The tighter tannins

are significantly mellowed by the meat’s fat, producing a palate pleaser to remember. Top your burgers with bold cheeses, like blue or sharp cheddar, and this varietal gets even better.

Pinot Noir a flexible varietal that is known for being extremely food-friendly. Pair it with everything from grilled fish to a juicy burger. Pinot Noir is an ideal candidate for grilled fish – especially salmon. If you aren’t sure what wine will work with your grilled dinner, Pinot Noir will likely be your best bet.

Chardonnay will work wonderfully with grilled fish (including shellfish), chicken with creamy sauces, and grilled corn on the cob with lots of butter.

Riesling is the perfect varietal for grilled brats, shrimp, barbecue chicken, grilled pineapple, and a variety of grilled veggies.

Sauvignon Blanc has an herbaceous quality that supports marinades and sauces with similar attributes. For example, grilled chicken that has been doused in Italian dressing or a citrus marinade will be unbeatable with a Sauvignon Blanc. Likewise, roasted peppers, veggies in fresh herbs, and grilled fish with dill and lemon will all be highlighted in tandem with a Sauvignon Blanc.

Gewürztraminer often offers a balance to spice with its slightly to moderately sweet character. This varietal would be a great choice to go with

blackened Mahi Mahi or grilled Cajun chicken with fresh mango salsa. In general, red wines go well with grilled red meats - like your basic burgers, steaks, and ribs. These meats can be somewhat salty, a bit smoky, and tend to be a touch sweeter depending on marinades, sauces, condiments, cooking times, etc. The lighter meats and sauces are more apt to flow better with white wines that share similar flavors as the foods they are meant to accent. If you are having a backyard barbecue, offer a few whites and a few reds and let your guests mix and match to see which flavor suits their preferences. There are no hard and fast rules.

I don’t remember where I heard this, but it’s so true… There are only two kinds of wine: those you like and those you don’t. Trust your palate!

Spring Salad

10 ounces of shell pasta

1 cup sliced radishes

1 cucumber, sliced thin

1 cup diced green pepper

1 cup sliced carrots

1/4 cup diced onion

3/4 cup mayo

1/3 cup sugar

3/4 tsp dill weed

1 Tablespoon vinegar

Cook and drain pasta. Add the vegetables to the pasta. Combine the last four ingredients and pour over the vegetables and pasta. Chill for 2-3 hours. Enjoy all the compliments.

Ihavea love/hate relationship with my non-stick pans. When they are new, that frictionless surface is a thing of wonder; an omelet will slide off with ease and the stickiest of sauces wipe away lickety-split. But after a few months of use, that omelet takes a little more butter. And the sauce requires a little more scrubbing. I care for these pans well—they never see the inside of the dishwasher, metal utensils are verboten, when stacked in the drawer they are always separated by thick felt pads. But after a year or two, they betray me. The slipperiness fades, they don’t work as well as they used to, the love turns to loathing. And then, as if the Grim Reaper had showed up in my cookware drawer, the non-stick coating begins to peel or flake. That’s it. No longer safe to use, my oncetrusted kitchen companion is destined for the landfill.

I’ve tried the cheap “as-seen-on-TV” brands. They never perform in my kitchen as well as they do for the fast-talking spokesman. I’ve spent hundreds on big name brands, while the heavier bases cook much better

than the cheaper models, their longevity does not match the price.

Some of you will say “I’ve had the same old Teflon non-stick since 1978; it works great!” Does it really? Or have you just become numb to it over time? Or do you cook with enough fat that you’ve long replaced the Teflon with a well-seasoned coating like your grandmother’s old cast-iron? Based on the reviews I’ve read in several consumer magazines; I am not alone.

The nonstick coating on every brand of non-stick cookery fades over time. Cook’s Illustrated estimates that 70% of all skillets sold in the U.S. are coated with some sort of non-stick. Globally, the non-stick cookware market is worth $20 billion dollars and is expected to exceed $25 billion by the end of the decade. That’s not all new consumers coming into the market, much of that is replacing pans that have failed.

Teflon started showing up the early Sixties, with a non-stick surface made from PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). It was touted as one of the

greatest inventions, but we have since learned more about the PFTEs. They are part of a family of chemicals called PFOAs, often referred to as “forever chemicals” because once they are out in the environment, they last, well, almost forever. And those chemicals get into drinking water and then the bloodstream and many of the chemicals have been linked to cancer. Because of that, PFOAs were banned in the U.S. in 2015, and have since been banned in Europe. If you’re still using that Teflon pan from the Carter administration, it’s likely still leaching PFOAs. You might want to reconsider how you fry your pork chop tonight.

So what do you do? There are really three great options. The first is oldschool, cast iron. Your grandmother undoubtedly used a cast iron pan or two. While the non-stick pans get a little worse with every use, cast iron gets better with each use. Each time you use a cast iron pan, you coat it with a little bit of oil, that oil gets heated and the fat molecules polymerize on the surface of the pan, creating a natural non-stick surface. The only downside? Cast iron is heavy. Trying to flip eggs in a 10-inch skillet counts as “arm day” at the gym. But with a little care, they last forever. And I shouldn’t need to say this, but DO NOT put cast iron in the dishwasher. Ever. Wars have been started over less serious crimes.

Carbon steel is my choice for non-stick alternatives. It works like cast iron and builds that same polymerized seasoning, but it weighs a whole lot less. If the seasoning gets damaged or worn, it’s easy to re-season with some vegetable oil and a little time. The maker of some of my carbon steel pans suggests that when the seasoning needs a bit of refreshing, cook up a couple of hamburgers or bratwurst. The fat will bring it back while you cook.

I love my carbon steel. Last night I used the same pan to fry some risotto cakes, then wiped it out with a paper towel, and reverse-seared a New York strip that had just come out of a sous-vide bath. Meanwhile, asparagus was roasting in the oven in another carbon pan. When dinner was done, a quick scrub of the pans; I dried them off and back in the cupboard they went.

The third option is stainless steel. If you tend to be hard on your pans, investing in a few high-quality stainless steel pans might be just what your kitchen needs. They are durable; you can scrub them, throw ‘em in the dishwasher, scrape with knives, forks, and spatulas, even use them as weapons; they are nearly indestructible. Friday night I made my beloved’s favorite pasta—Italian sausage, brown butter, peas, and sage—the sauce was cooked in a stainless skillet, the pasta in a stainless stock pot. When dinner was done, everything but my chef’s knife went in the dishwasher. Super simple. And those pans have been around for a while, I know the skillet pre-dates our marriage, so it’s at least 29 years old, and it still looks like new.

I will admit, I have not been able to completely break up with nonstick pans. The eggs for breakfast this morning were fried in a non-stick. But I find I use them less often, which means I replace them less often. And that keeps me from contributing to that $20 billion dollar business and saves a few pans from the landfill. We can all do our part. Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

4 DIY Dog Treat Puzzles to Relieve Boredom

Whena dog needs an outlet for their energy, it’s important for its owner to supply activities that stimulate their mind and supply playful exercise. Treat puzzles are a wonderful way to interact and play with your dog, as well as reinforce training commands and develop various skills. Here are some ideas to promote a healthy, active pup:

Homemade Snuffle Mat

Materials needed: Rubber sink mat or sturdy piece of cardboard, fabric from old baby blankets, towels, or clothing, scissors, and any other item for sensory or visual appeal.

If using a piece of cardboard, use the scissors to poke holes in it, creating a pattern that you will be able to weave fabric through. Cut fabric into strips about one inch wide and six inches long. Weave a fabric strip through two holes in your mat, then tie the ends of the strip into a knot to secure it in place. Continue this with the rest of your fabric strips, until the entire mat is covered with the loose ends of your fabric strips. Trim any excess fabric, if necessary. Upgrade your mat by adding a crinkle toy or baby washcloth with a cute plush accessory to the fabric strips. Sprinkle kibble and some treats throughout the fabric on the mat and show the new activity to your pup. Watch as they use their nose to find the hidden goodies!

Muffin Tin Seek & Find

Materials needed: Muffin tin, tennis balls, and dog treats.

Place several small treats in the muffin compartments, then cover each one with a tennis ball. Guide your dog through the process by nudging the balls and showing that there are treats to search for underneath. Let them sniff out the treats and feel the puppy love!

Paper Plate Puzzles

Materials needed: Paper plates, scissors, and dog treats.

Fold one paper plate in half, creating a semi-circle. Fold the semicircle in half one more time. Unfold the plate to show the four sections. With scissors, cut along the crease lines from the edge of the plate, stopping 1-2 inches away from the center. Repeat these steps with more paper plates to create as many puzzles as you’d like for your dog. In the center of the plates that have already been cut, place a dog treat. Cover the treat by folding the plates back along the creases and creating a pocket. Give the paper puzzles to your dog and enjoy watching them use their nose, paws, and mouth to discover the hidden treats by unfolding the plates.

Towel Knot Roll Up

Materials needed: A towel and dog treats or kibble. Lay a towel flat, then place some treats in a row about an inch in from one of the longer edges. Fold the edge over the treats and repeat the step of placing treats down along the edge. Keep rolling the towel over the treats until you have layers of treats in a rolled-up towel. Taking the ends of the towel, fold it into a knot. This will make it more of a challenge for your pup to find the treats. Hand the towel to your dog and let them use all their senses to find the rolled-up treats.

For any of the examples above, remember to prioritize your dog’s safety by ensuring the treats are safe and supervising them during playtime. Remove any small pieces that may come loose while your dog is solving a treat puzzle to prevent them from ingesting any foreign materials. Don’t forget to always encourage their problem-solving skills while also having fun with your four-legged friend!
