Kasim Reed Will Not Pursue Open Senate Seat ‘I’m Focused on Being Mayor’

Mayor Kasim Reed has once again asserted his desire to remain mayor of Atlanta and not pursue statewide office.

In an interview on MSNBC this week, Reed declared himself uninterested in the 2014 race for Georgia's U.S. Senate seat, but had a couple of suggestions as to who might figure in on the Democratic side.

"I'm just loving being mayor; I'm focused on being mayor," Reed said. "I think there are some terrific candidates out there. I think Congressman John Barrow would be terrific. I also think Peter Aman, my former COO, would be terrific as well. I'm going to keep being mayor."

The rush for potential new candidates for U.S. Senate was created when Sen. Saxby Chambliss announced he would not be seeking reelection at the end of his term.

Meanwhile, the AJC reports U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Savannah) spent the afternoon at the state Capitol, meeting with Gov. Nathan Deal and House Speaker David Ralston.

The UniverSoul Circus, which has been defined as “a sensory overload of indescribable proportions, featuring dazzling lights, pulsating sounds” opens in Atlanta at Turner Field, Feb. 14 through Mar. 3.

With a mast standing 70-feet tall at its highest peak and spanning 158-feet in diameter, the new UniverSoul Circus big top tent arrived in North America late last year.

The new 2,278 seat tent, with bold red and yellow stripes and purple accents, was designed and constructed in collaboration with the famed Italian design firm Canobbio. The new 26,000-square-foot tent system includes the Big Top, concessions tent, ticket takers tent and the artist entrance.

For the past five years, UniverSoul Circus has consistently ranked in the top 10 of Ticketmaster’s Top 25, which ranks the Top 25 Most Requested Family Events in the U.S. by fan-search requests and online event page views.

Rosa Parks Honored with USPS Forever Stamp Daily World Staff

The U.S. Postal Service released the Rosa Parks commemorative forever stamp this week, and the civil rights icon's image was honored at a celebration at the King Center. The stamp was released on what would have been Parks' 100th birthday, Feb. 4.

The unveiling of the commemorative stamp and honoring of Parks' birthday at the King Center featured the Women of the Civil Rights Movement including Dr. Bernice King, King Center CEO; SCLC First Lady Cathelean Steele; SCLC Women President Evelyn Lowery; Janice Mathis, Rainbow/PUSH executive director; Helen Butler, People's Agenda executive director; former State Rep. Roberta Abdul-Salaam; and the esteemed Christine King Farris, sister of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a long-time King Center executive; among other civil rights luminaries.

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta), declared himself "very, very interested" in the seat and said he is polling. Like Kingston, he talked up his statewide connections. And Westmoreland officially ruled himself out.

Reed was on MSNBC talking about President Barack Obama's trip to Minnesota and a commercial that supported Obama's anti-gun violence campaign. Reed spoke at length during the interview about last week's shooting in an Atlanta middle school that left one student injured.

"I also have made the proposal to link every single school in the city of Atlanta into our video integration system at police headquarters so that we can have eyes in our schools," said Reed. "And in the event there is a tragedy, it will allow us to deploy our police to the campus much faster, and it will give us eyes on the ground."

Reed made omments about seeking a second term as mayor and not seeking higher office at a meeting in February with the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists.

The U.S. Postal Service 2013 stamp honors the life of Parks, an extraordinary American activist who became an iconic figure in the Civil Rights Movement.

In 1955, in Montgomery, Ala., Rosa Parks courageously refused to give up her seat on a municipal bus to a white man, defying the discriminatory laws of the time.

The response to Parks' arrest was a boycott of the Montgomery bus system that lasted for more than a year and became an international cause cÊlèbre. In 1956, in a related case, the United States Supreme Court affirmed that the segregation of the Montgomery buses was unconstitutional.

Parks stamp will be part of The Black Heritage Stamp Series, a collection of stamps commemorating the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans throughout American history.

The Black Heritage series began in 1978 with a stamp that honored American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Each fall, the honoree for the following year is announced.

"Mrs. Parks was not just known for sitting down on that Montgomery bus. She was also known for working with children," says Brenda Davenport, founder and coordinator of the Rosa Parks Centennial Tribute Committee. "She had the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute in Atlanta, where over 500 young people have been touched by Mrs. Parks through participating in the program. Once she sat down, the rest of the world stood up. That one act started the modern day Civil Rights Movement -bringing us Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and so many, many more."

In a lawsuit filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court, former OWN employee Carolyn Hommel claims she was a victim of sex and pregnancy discrimination, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hommel was reportedly hired in 2010 as senior director of scheduling and acquisitions at the Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications owned network. She claims that even though she was on the fast track to becoming a vice president, she was replaced by a temporary employee when she was forced to take a pregnancy-related medical leave.

Upon her return to work, Hommel alleges that she was slowly stripped of her duties, which were being given to the temp, and claims to have even been excluded from important company meetings.

Just one month after giving birth to her baby girl in

March of last year, Hommel contends she was laid off by the powers-that-be at the famed network. She claims that she was even advised to apply for the vice president job but did not get it. Hommel also states in the suit that her boss, Michael Garner, concocted a performance review that downplayed her duties, thereby not making her a viable candidate for the vice president spot.

Garner is also named in the lawsuit.

In addition to the sex and pregnancy discrimination allegations, the lawsuit is also claiming disability discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, retaliation and willful failure to pay wages upon discharge or termination. Hommel, who insists her pregnancy and subsequent medical leave are what led to her being demoted and then laid off, is seeking unspecified damages.

Hartsfield-Jackson Still ‘World’s Busiest Airport’ in 2012 Special to the Daily World

For the 15th consecutive year, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has retained the title as the world’s busiest airport. Aviation officials reported passenger traffic increased by more than 3.1 million passengers in 2012, making 2012 the busiest year ever for the airport.

The 2012 total of 95.49 million passengers is 3.35 percent higher than the previous record of 92.39 million passengers, set in

2011. Aircraft operations (landings and takeoffs) increased by .68 percent – from 923,996 in 2011 to 930,310 in 2012. Domestic operations increased by .81 percent – from 855,215 to 862,101 in 2012.

The game was cancelled after a student was shot on the Morehouse campus a day before the event.

According to Dr. Tamica Smith-Jones, CAU athletic director, school administrators of both CAU and Morehouse decided to postpone the game and all social activities after the shooting.

Police said witnesses reported hearing four shots during a dispute following a pickup

basketball game at the gym at Samuel A. Archer Hall on the Morehouse campus. The building is located at the corner of Student Movement Drive and Joseph E. Lowery Blvd.

On Saturday, Amir Obafemi, 21, a Clark Atlanta student, was charged with felony aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon and booked into the Fulton County Jail on $2,000 bond.

Meanwhile, shooting victim Cornileus Savage, a student of Morehouse, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital on Friday following the incident and was listed in stable condition.

Hartsfield-Jackson recently has been named the best U.S. airport for passengers searching for dining, amenities and business traveler services and for passengers with a connecting flight. That recognition is the result of Travel Leaders Group’s annual Travel Trends Survey.

Attention Teenagers And Adults The Atlanta Daily World is partnering with New American Media (NAM) and other media outlets in Atlanta to promote an essay contest on teachers. Teens and adults are invited to write up to 500 words in English or in the writer's native language describing a teacher who changed their life or the life of their child.

In-language submissions will be translated prior to final judging. Essays should be sent via email or regular mail, along with the entry form.

A panel of distinguished educators, journalists, scholars and advocates will select a winner from each category. Judges will look for evidence that the teacher opened up a new pathway of knowledge or opportunity for the student that he or she had previously not been aware of, or that the teacher inspired or fostered a love of learning.

We are looking for real life examples and expect the entries will help us expand our definition of what a "great teacher" is.

Winners in the "Teenager" and "Adult" categories will each receive a cash award of $500 and the teachers profiled will also receive an award of $500. Winner in "Teacher In Memory" will have the honor to pick a local public school in Atlanta or surrounding counties to donate a $500 check made by NAM. By ERICkA BENTON MARTIN www.atlantadailyworld.com Mayor Kasim Reed and Councilwoman Cleta Winslow officially announced that the city will renovate and reopen Fire Station 7 at a ceremony earlier this week.

The ceremony was held at the station located on the corner of West Whitehall and Oak streets in the city’s West End neighborhood.

For five years, emergency calls from the West End community were being handled by multiple other fire stations throughout the city. Residents began to complain about long response times.

“We were in dire need of a fire station,” Anna Davis, a longtime resident of the West End, told the Daily World.

“Now that the station is being reopened, it makes me feel like our voice was heard, like someone actually cares about our community.”

Established in 1910, this particular fire station served the West End and surrounding communities including Mechanicsville, Mozley Park and Castleberry for nearly a century. The station closed in 2008 as a result of economic hardships and budget cuts.

Fire Station 7 was the city’s oldest fire station.

“It is important that we restore this vital landmark to

improve public safety and give the people a sense of comfort,” said Reed.

The city’s fire chief, Kelvin Cochran, expressed deep gratitude as the announcement of the reopening was made.

“Announcing the closure of this fire station was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do,” said Cochran. “There are not enough words to express my joy over this reopening.”

The Atlanta City Council took a final vote to fund Station 7 for renovations late last month. Because of the building’s old age and extensive asbestos removal, the mayor says the total cost for the renovations will be nearly $2.5 million. The cost will be covered by a combination of donations and city funds.

Capital City Bank, located about one block from the station, held a fundraiser for Fire Station 7 and was able to bring in more than $30,000.

“Mayor Reed is indeed a friend of the community,” said Frank Simmons, the bank’s vice president. “On behalf of Capital City Bank, I want to give thanks to the mayor for keeping his word on reopening our fire station.”

Bank of America to Close Bankhead Branch

Special to the Daily World Senate Democratic Whip Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta), joined by Atlanta City Councilwoman Felicia Moore, met recently with Bank of America (BOA) president Gerri Thomas, who told elected officials BOA was moving forward with its closure of its branch on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Bankhead/northwest Atlanta.

As a primary financial institution located in an impoverished northwest Atlanta area, the bank's refusal to remain open is essentially "telling the neighborhood to drop dead," said Fort.

"This bank has a history of predatory lending and subsequent foreclosures in this neighborhood, and they have a long history of not maintaining these foreclosed properties. Now after years of exploiting the community, they are pulling out," said Fort.

The Bankhead branch, slated to close in March, has issued hundreds of foreclosures in the 30318 zip code, where the Hollowell Pkwy. branch is located, Fort noted.

“Now, despite the efforts of the citizens living in the community, including a petition signed by over 500 residents and a rally held at a nearby church, the bank remains adamant that its branch business has not been significant enough to remain open,” he said.

Many of the neighborhood's senior residents said the bank closing would leave them without access to their finances.

Fort is authoring legislation requiring a judicial review of all foreclosures in order to put a stop to the cycle of homeowner abuse in neighborhoods that were virtually epicenters of the housing crisis.

Thousands who enjoy gospel music are expected to converge on Atlanta during Valentine’s weekend for the 17th Annual Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference. This is the largest international Gospel event held during Black History Month.

The two-and-a-half day confab will kick off on Thursday, Feb. 14 with daytime educational seminars and workshops, as well as nightly events. Several Gospel “A-listers” will make appearances throughout the weekend.

The entire event will be held at the Changing a Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church, 3350 Greenbriar Parkway, S.W.; Atlanta, GA 30331, where the host pastor is Bishop Paul S. Smith’s 56 wins in his first five seasons as a head coach are the second-most by a first-time head coach in NFL history. Atlanta’s .700 winning percentage since 2008 is the second-best mark in the NFL during that span and the Falcons are the only NFC team to post winning records in each of the last five seasons.

Smith became the Falcons all-time leader in coaching wins in 2012, surpassing Dan Reeves who posted a 49-59-1 record from 1997-03.

ADWnews Vannoy’s Voice: Falcons’ Mike Smith is Due a New Contract

By Ben Vannoy HayWood Media After his inherited head coach, Dan Reeves, retired, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank hired Jim Mora in 2004, then Bobby Petrino in 2007, before hitting the jack-pot with the hiring of Mike Smith as his team’s head coach in 2008. And after a successful four-year start, Blank rewarded Smith with a three-year contract extension last February.

Well now Blank should redo Smith’s contract, again.

That’s because the Falcons’ fifth-year head coach became a hot commodity with his record-breaking 2012 season and naming as NFL Coach of the Year by Sporting News for the third time.

“I think Mike Smith and his staff have done a really good job of staying with the plan and being very basic in our approach. And we’ve been very consistent. We’ve been consistent on offense, defense, and special teams. And when that happens, you tend to win football games,” said Falcons president and chief executive officer, Rich McKay, in a January 2011 interview with Charlie Miller for Athlon Sports.

I couldn’t agree more, as that comment also applies to how the Falcons have played this season.

In 2012, Smith led the Falcons to an NFC-best 13-3 record and the club’s first NFC Championship Game appearance in 14 years. This season, Smith guided the Falcons to their first playoff win since 2004 and became the first head coach in team history to post five straight winning seasons.

Special to the Daily World Stepping into the archives housing the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art permanent collection is like diving into a treasure trove of mixed media. Paintings, textiles, prints and sculptures by Faith Ringgold, iona rozeal brown (who spells her name with all lowercase letters), Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, and Hale Woodruff are among the 350 pieces in the collection.

The museum has opened the doors of its collection storage to friends and champions of the institution, who have in turn, helped to create the upcoming exhibition, “Multiple Choice: Perspectives on the Spelman College Collection.”

As part of this unique project, students, faculty, staff, friends of the museum, alumnae, and other stakeholders have been invited to view the college’s art collection, select an object, and then document their responses. The responses from 50 participants will be shared with museum visitors via object labels, recorded video statements, social media, and other interactive means. “Multiple Choice” will be on view from Feb. 7-May 18.

Spelman College’s permanent holdings are a rich resource. African, ethnographic, and three-dimensional artifacts comprise the core of the permanent holdings, which date back to the 1940s. The collection of African art includes works from Cameroon, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. The permanent holdings also include works by celebrated artists including Beverly Buchanan, Sheila Pree Bright, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Lalla Essaydi, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Nandipha Mntambo, Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, and many others.

Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D., director of the museum, explained, “‘Multiple Choice’ offers the unprecedented opportunity for an array of stakeholders to select, engage, and discuss specific works. Two factors helped guide the project: first, that it was challenging for most to choose just one work and secondly, that as in multiple choice tests, the answer is more often than not ‘all of the above.’”

Ross, photo-griot; and Daryl White, Ph.D., Spelman College professor of anthropology. “‘Multiple Choice’ is an open invitation for viewers to have firsthand engagement with the college’s growing collection,” said Anne Collins Smith, the curator of collections. “This project challenges the widespread idea that museums are exclusive institutions that are inaccessible to the general public. ‘Multiple Choice’ affirms viewing art is an interactive experience and quenches the contemporary thirst for on-demand access.”

The U.S. Census Bureau has released the following figures about Black America to coincide with African-American History Month. I found them interesting enough to share: Population 43.9 million - The number of Blacks, either alone or in combination with one or more other races, on July 1, 2011, up 1.6 percent from the census on April 1, 2010. (Source: Population Estimates) 77.4 million - The projected Black population of the United States (including those of more than one race) for July 1, 2060. On that date, according to the projection, Blacks would constitute 18.4 percent of the nation’s total population. (Source: Population projections) 3.7 million - The Black population in New York, which led all states as of July 1, 2011. Texas had the largest numeric increase since April 1, 2010 (84,000). The District of Columbia had the highest percentage of Blacks (52.2 percent), followed by Mississippi (38.0 percent). (Source: Population Estimates) 1.3 million - The Black population in Cook, Ill., which had the largest Black population of any county in 2011. Fulton, Ga., had the largest numeric increase since 2010 (13,000). Holmes, Miss., was the county with the highest percentage of Blacks in the nation (82.9 percent). (Source: Population Estimates) Serving our nation 2.3 million - Number of Black military veterans in the United States in 2011.

One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

It was a flawed document that freed enslaved people in Confederate areas that he did not control. At the same time, it was a progressive document because it initiated discussion about the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteen “FREEDOM” Amendments.

One hundred years later, in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. riveted the nation with his “I Have A Dream” speech during the Aug. 28 March on Washington. Many will remember that he said, “I have a dream that one day people will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Somehow people forget that in the same speech he said, “We have come to the nation’s capital to cash a check that has been marked insufficient funds.” If people said “cash the check” as often as they said “I have a dream,” we’d move more quickly forward in closing the economic gaps that African Americans experience.

We’ve been doing this 50-year thing for the past couple years, and we’ll be doing it for another few.

The “Greensboro Four” North Carolina A&T State University Students (with the help of Bennett College students, often ignored) sat in at Woolworth counters on Feb. 1, 1960, more than 50 years ago. The March on Washington happened 50 years ago. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, and beyond that the 1960s will resonate for the next few years with commemorations and anniversaries.

These celebrations are important historical moments, but who remembers? The median age of the population in the United States is about 37 years old. Many of these folks remember the Civil Rights Moment through twice and thrice told tales. Those who are under the median age see the Civil Rights Movement as something like a fable, something they heard about, but doesn’t really matter to them.

Many of these young people see themselves as “post-racial.” They hang out with their peers, race notwithstanding. They have never experienced discrimination. Even when they experience it, they are slow to embrace it. They are post-racial, whatever that means.

If some of these young people had been immersed in history, they might understand why the Black unemployment rate is twice that of the White rate. If they had read some Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke of racial disparities in much of his work, they would understand the many ways the struggle continues. But popular culture suggests that when Black folks and White folks can both act extreme fools on reality shows.

There has been a rich history and legacy of struggle and protest that has been swallowed by the notion of post-racialism in the first decades of this century. It is laudable that President Obama used both a Bible of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and that of President Abraham Lincoln, connecting the 150-year-old dots. President Obama’s choice in using both Bibles in this anniversary year is a testament to his sensitivity and ability to juggle the tightrope he must manage as both president of the United States and the first African American president of our nation.

Most folks 50 and older get it. What about those who are both younger than our nation’s median age and unschooled in the nuances of history? Is our conversation about race in America stuck in some kind of time warp, where we are unable to speak cross generationally because we have extremely different memories, recollections, and knowledge about that which happened 50 years ago?

We do our nation a disservice when we duck and dodge our racially-tinged history. We have to grace and embrace the past in order to move forward with our future. Somehow this is a message that needs to be transmitted to young people, especially in this 150th year after emancipation, this 50th year after the March on Washington, this season of embracing and celebrating our history.
