President Obama Signs Walmart Opens Executive Actions on new Store in historic Gun Control Westside Village Special to the Daily World

By DAnA BASh, JESSiCA YEllin AnD TOm COhEn CNN

Residents of Historic Westside Village are invited to the new Walmart store, which opens immediately following a 7:30 a.m., grand-opening celebration Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 835 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The new store brings approximately 150 new jobs to the area and opportunities for savings for customers. It will be open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Mayor Kasim Reed and community officials will be on-site for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23. The Washington High School band will perform the national anthem. The Rev. Kenny Alexander from the Antioch Urban Ministries will lead the invocation. Customers are encouraged to come to the store on Wednesday to take advantage of a wide variety of events and promotions, including product samplings and giveaways from companies such as Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay and Nestle.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday proposed background checks on all gun sales and bans on military style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines as part of a package of steps to reduce gun violence in the wake of the Newtown school massacre last month. With relatives of some of the 20 children killed in the Connecticut rampage looking on, Obama signed 23 executive actions -- which don't require congressional approval -- to strengthen background checks and expand safety programs in schools. He also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, to restrict ammunition magazines to no more than 10 rounds, and to require a background check

Atlanta is seeking volunteers as part of an effort to create the first name-by-name registry of homeless people in the city. The survey is aimed at placing hundreds of homeless residents in permanent housing by December. Officials say as many of 300 volunteers are needed to scour the city and determine which services are needed. The survey is planned for this week, Thursday evening and Friday morning, when volunteers supported by professional outreach workers and Atlanta police are scheduled to conduct surveys of people sleeping outdoors and in emergency shelters in Atlanta. Data from the surveys will be used to

create the registry of homeless people in Atlanta, with information about their health problems and barriers to getting and keeping permanent housing.

President Obama Signs Executive Actions on Gun Control Page 1 on anyone buying a gun, whether at a store or in a private sale at an auction or convention. Referring to the young students killed in the Newtown shootings on Dec. 14 and other victims of gun violence, Obama said the nation must do a better job of protecting its children, especially when they are in schools, shopping malls, movie theaters and other public places. While some of the steps he proposed are given little chance of winning congressional approval in the face of the nation's powerful gun lobby, Obama said all efforts must be made to reduce chronic gun violence in the country. "This is our first task as a society -- keeping our children safe," the president said, adding that saving even one life would make the changes he seeks worth the effort. Republicans immediately rejected the Obama proposals as

an attack on the constitutional right to bear arms. "Nothing the president is proposing would have stopped the massacre at Sandy Hook," said a statement by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, considered an up-and-coming GOP leader. "President Obama is targeting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens instead of seriously addressing the real underlying causes of such violence." The powerful National Rifle Association said it would work with Congress to find what it called "real solutions to protecting America's most valuable asset -- our children." "Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation," the NRA said in a statement. "Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy."

Obama called accusations that he seeks to violate gun rights untrue, saying opponents seek to wage a campaign of intimidation and fear instead of working with him for needed changes. Obama proposed legislative steps he previously has backed, such as reinstating the Clinton-era ban on assault weapons, and also requested that funds be made available to help treat mental illness and provide schools with support to enhance their safety. Vice President Joe Biden led a panel assembled by Obama to examine gun control steps after the Newtown shootings, which sparked a fierce public debate over how to prevent such mass killings. "The world has changed, and it's demanding action," Biden said at Wednesday's White House event. Read more on this story at www.atlantadailyworld.com

The Robinson Family Bible was selected specifically for the occasion. The Bible was a gift from the First Lady’s father, Fraser Robinson III, to his mother, LaVaughn Delores Robinson, on Mother’s Day in 1958. Mrs. Robinson was the first African-American woman manager of a Moody Bible Institute’s bookstore, and she used the Bible regularly. The Lincoln Bible is part of the collections of the Library of Congress and was originally purchased by William Thomas Carroll, clerk of the Supreme Court, for use during Lincoln’s swearing-in ceremony on March 4, 1861. The Bible itself is bound in burgundy velvet with a gold-washed white metal rim around the three outside edges of both covers, and all of its edges are heavily gilded. The King Bible was Dr. King’s “traveling Bible.” An avid reader who was constantly on the road, Dr. King typically traveled with a selection of books that included this Bible. It was used for inspiration and preparing sermons and speeches, including during Dr. King’s time as pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. “We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the Oath of Office using his Bible,” Dr. King’s children said recently. “His ‘traveling Bible’ inspired

him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the President as he begins his second term. With the Inauguration less than two weeks away, we join Americans across the country in embracing this opportunity to celebrate how far we have come, honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through service, and rededicate ourselves to the work ahead.” Members of the King family also will join Americans across the country to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King by participating in National Day of Service events on Saturday, Jan. 19. Additionally, a float in the Inaugural parade will commemorate Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

MLK Service To Feature Rev. Samuel Rodriguez Page 1 In addition, The King Center will unveil and present the Inaugural Coretta Scott King A.N.G.E.L. Award (Advancing Non-violence through Generations of Exceptional Leadership), which recognizes young leaders (ages 12-25) and a youth organization/initiative that exemplifies exceptional leadership in the areas of peace, social justice and nonviolent social change. The recipients of the 1st annual A.N.G.E.L. Award are Alec Loorz, founder of Kids vs. Global Warming (A.N.G.E.L. Award Youth), and “The 100 Days of Nonviolence” the Birmingham Campaign (A.N.G.E.L. Award Youth Initiative), accepted by City Councilman James (Jay) E. Roberson Jr. Birmingham, Ala., District 7. The inaugural A.N.G.E.L. awardees exemplify the spirit of youth activism for environmental progress and the pursuit of social progress through Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’ s philosophy and methods of nonviolent conflict reconciliation. “I am my father’s daughter; I realize that the responsibility for his legacy is ours,” said Bernice King. “ I am also my mother’s child; and like her, I am determined to keep his spirit alive. This is why I am so honored to serve as the CEO of the King Center. The challenges are great, but with help from our friends, supporters, and those who are committed to living the dream, we will not fail.” The Annual Salute to Greatness Dinner has become one of the largest dinners held in Atlanta during the calendar year, with many nationally known public figures and some of Atlanta’s top community leaders participating. Some of the recipients of the Salute to Greatness Award in recent years have included: (then) Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton; Ben & Jerry’s; Oprah Winfrey; The Portman Companies; Bono; Turner Broadcasting System Inc.; Quincy Jones; Sara

Lee Corporation; Tony Bennett; AOL Time Warner; Stevie Wonder; the Coca-Cola Company; Coretta Scott King (posthumously); Reid Hoffman, co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn; and Sheila C. There will be a reception prior to the dinner in the foyer outside the ballroom beginning at 5:30 p.m. and an “Afterglow” reception in the Regency Ballroom following the dinner. Sponsors of the Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner include: the Coca-Cola Company; Mercedes-Benz USA; Newell Rubbermaid; Delta Airlines; Allstate; Cox Media Group; Kaiser Permanente; Wells Fargo; The Home Depot; the Captain Planet Foundation; and others to be announced. Historic King Bible Selected for Obama Inauguration Special to the Daily World The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) has announced the Bibles President Obama and Vice President Biden will use at their swearing-in ceremonies on Sunday, Jan. 20, and Monday, Jan. 21. On Sunday, Jan. 20, President Obama will take the oath of office using the Robinson Family Bible. On Monday, Jan. 21, the President will take the oath of office using two Bibles: the Bible used by President Lincoln at his first Inauguration, which the President used in 2009, and a Bible used by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “President Obama is honored to use these Bibles at the swearing-in ceremonies,” said Steve Kerrigan, President and CEO of the PIC. “On the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, this historic moment is a reflection of the extraordinary progress we’ve made as a nation.” Though there is no constitutional requirement for the use of a Bible during the swearing-in, Presidents have traditionally used Bibles for the ceremony, choosing a volume with personal or historical significance. In 2009, President Obama became the first President sworn in using the Lincoln Bible since its initial use in 1861.

Special to the Daily World The Davis Bozeman Law Firm, in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library, will host “The Consequences of Thug Life: To Be A Thug Or To Be Brave,” facilitated by Criminal Defense/Trial Attorney Mawuli Mel Davis on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Auburn Avenue Research Library. The library is located at 101 Auburn Avenue, N.E. in Atlanta. The “Consequences of Thug Life: To Be A Thug Or To Be Brave” presentation was developed after Davis witnessed the increase in youth that come from “good families” going to prison because they have bought into the glamorization of being a “thug.” This multimedia presentation uses hip-hop music, images, and clips to engage youth in a thought-provoking discussion. This solution based workshop provides attendees a strong sense of self-identity, self-worth, and responsibility to the community. This dynamic and energetic workshop uses positive affirma-

tions and creative teaching tools to inspire young people to be “brave enough” to be themselves. This discussion is a penetrating examination of what manhood has been “reduced to” in many communities of color.

Freedom Wright Named Allstate Give Back Day Hero Special to the Daily World Allstate Insurance Company has announced that Freedom Wright of Atlanta has been named a 2013 Allstate Give Back Day Hero. For the fifth consecutive year, Allstate Insurance Company is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through Allstate Give Back Day, a national program that encourages individuals across the country to volunteer. This year, actress and volunteer enthusiast Keshia Knight Pulliam has partnered with Allstate to help launch the program and recognize Wright and the three other selfless African-American heroes who dedicate their time and efforts to making a positive impact in their communities. A former foster child, Wright is a high school senior from Atlanta who knows what it means to wonder how she will get her next meal or clothes. That’s one reason why the 17-year-old, who was adopted at the age of 4, decided to help other children living in the foster care system by holding “Free Your Mind” backpack drives benefitting foster children in her area. Wright’s goal is to not only raise awareness of older children living in foster care, but also to encourage Atlanta’s youth to volunteer. To help further this effort, Wright also speaks to community groups about the foster care experience. Wright has earned the Presidential Service Award the past four years for her efforts as a regular volunteer at The Atlanta Community Food Bank, The Atlanta Fulton County Library and St. Francis Table, a soup kitchen in Atlanta that feeds the

Federal Benefit Recipients Must Switch to Direct Deposit by March 1 The U.S. Department of the Treasury recently reported that 5 million checks continue to be mailed to federal beneficiaries each month. With just two months remaining until the March 1 electronic payment law goes into effect, the Treasury Department is urging Social Security and other federal benefit recipients to not delay and switch now to either direct deposit or the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® card. “Choosing direct deposit or the Direct Express® card makes it easier, safer and more convenient for beneficiaries to receive their payments. Switching to an electronic payment is not optional – it’s the law,” said David Lebryk, commissioner of the Treasury Department’s Financial Management Service. “If you or a loved one still receive paper checks for your benefit payments, now is the time to switch. It’s free and easy – just call 1-800333-1795 or visit www.GoDirect.org.” Converting the remaining paper check recipients to electronic payments will save American taxpayers $1 billion over the next 10 years. The Treasury Department published a final rule in December 2010 to gradually phase out paper checks for federal benefit payments. Since May 1, 2011, all people newly applying for federal benefits, including Social Security, SSI, Veterans Affairs, Railroad Retirement Board, Office of Personnel Management benefits and other non-tax payments, have had to choose direct deposit or the Direct Express® card at the time they sign up for their benefits. March 1, 2013, is the final deadline by which all remaining federal benefit check recipients must receive their money electronically. Check recipients can sign up for direct deposit or the Direct Express® card by calling toll-free 1-800-333-1795, visiting www.GoDirect.org, or talking to their local federal paying agency office. The process is fast, easy and free. • By taking a few minutes to gather the necessary information ahead of time, most federal benefit recipients can sign up for electronic payments with one phone call. • Individuals will need their Social Security number or claim number, their 12-digital federal benefit check number and the amount of their most recent federal benefit check. If choosing direct deposit, recipients also will need their financial institution’s routing transit number, (often found on a personal check) account number and account type (checking or saving). • There are no sign-up fees or monthly fees to receive benefits electronically.

News One The Obama Administration has spoken. There will be no secessions from the United States of America. In a response to states that so couldn’t bear the thought of living in a nation where President Barack Obama is commander-in-chief that they inundated WhiteHouse.gov with petitions of secession, Jon Carson, director of the Office of Public Engagement, wrote the following: “Thank you for using the White House’s online petitions platform to participate in your government. “In a nation of 300 million people — each with their own set of deeply-held beliefs — democracy can be noisy and controversial. And that’s a good thing. Free and open debate is what makes this country work, and many people around the world risk their lives every day for the liberties we often take for granted. “But as much as we value a healthy debate, we don’t let that debate tear us apart. “Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States ‘in order to form a more perfect union’ through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot — a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it. As President Abraham Lincoln explained in his first inaugural address in 1861, ‘in contemplation of universal law and of the Constitution the Union of these States is perpetual.’ In the years that followed, more than 600,000 Americans died in a

10

www.ADWnews.com

long and bloody civil war that vindicated the principle that the Constitution establishes a permanent union between the States. And shortly after the Civil War ended, the Supreme Court confirmed that “[t]he Constitution, in all its provisions, looks to an indestructible Union composed of indestructible States. “Although the founders established a perpetual union, they also provided for a government that is, as President Lincoln would later describe it, “of the people, by the people, and for the people” — all of the people. Participation in, and engagement with, government is the cornerstone of our democracy. And because every American who wants to participate deserves a government that is accessible and responsive, the Obama Administration has created a host of new tools and channels to connect concerned citizens with the White House. In fact, one of the most exciting aspects of the We the People platform is a chance to engage directly with our most outspoken critics.” So let’s be clear: No one disputes that our country faces big challenges, and the recent election followed a vigorous debate about how they should be addressed. As President Obama said the night he won re-election, “We may have battled fiercely, but it’s only because we love this country deeply and we care so strongly about its future.” Whether it’s figuring out how to strengthen our economy, reduce our deficit in a responsible way, or protect our country, we will need to work together — and hear from one another — in order to find the best way to move forward. I hope you’ll take a

om

few minutes to learn more about the President’s ideas and share more of your own. As previously reported, the terms of participation for ‘We The People,’ as of Oct. 3, 2011, state that petitions which meet the listed criteria become searchable on WhiteHouse.gov once — and if — they reach 150 signatures within 30 days. If that is accomplished, for President Obama to actively consider a petition, it must reach 25,000 signatures within the remainder of the same 30-day period. States that petitioned to seceed included: South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana. States do not have a legal right to secede. In response to a question about secession in 2010, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made it clear that the states are part of a whole under one federal government, not individual entities: “If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede. (Hence, in the Pledge of Allegiance, ‘one Nation . . . indivisible.’)”

The show airs in Atlanta at 1 p.m. on WAGA-TV, Fox 5. Steve Harvey is the host of the new one-hour daytime show and was chosen by the 2013 People’s Choice Awards as Favorite New Talk Show Host. “Steve Harvey” is currently sold in 98 percent of the country, including all of the NBC Owned Television stations. Since the show’s debut, markets that are upgrading “Steve Harvey” include Detroit, Phoenix, Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Austin, Buffalo, Fresno, Fort Myers, Tucson, Honolulu, Des Moines, Madison, Tri Cities and Burlington, among many others. In addition, NBCUniversal is actively extending the show with stations across the U.S. for 2014-2016. “The instant success of ‘Steve Harvey’ with the daytime audience is being greeted with long-term commitments from our sta-

tion partners,” said NBCU’s Wallach. In its premiere season, “Steve Harvey” has been a phenomenon in all key rating benchmarks. In the November 2012 sweep, “Steve Harvey” is the only new syndicated strip to increase over year-ago time periods, build on its lead-in and grow in consecutive quarter-hour ratings among households and women ages 25 to 54. The show is distributed in national syndication by NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution. “Steve Harvey” is taped before a live studio audience at the state-of-the-art HD NBC 5 studios in downtown Chicago.

By JAmeS PReSSley Daily World Staff Former Tusculum College Assistant Coach Kevin Weston is now the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Panthers’ new head football coach. The appointment was announced this week by the athletic department of CAU at a press conference in the Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson Student Center. "We wanted to be quick as well as thorough because from the end of the season to the time period where you must begin to lock in your recruitment and set your plans is very short, and we have met that objective," Clark Atlanta President Carlton E. Brown said. "Weston knows the game inside and out and has proven his ability to build and grow successful teams; all these qualities create the kind of foundation necessary to ensure a focused and aggressive turnaround in our football program." Weston spent eight years on the coaching staff at his alma mater, Tusculum College, where in 2008 as assistant head coach, he helped lead the team to a 9-4 record while claiming the South Atlantic Conference Championship and a berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time in school history. Known for his defensive prowess, Weston's 2011 defensive unit finished second in the nation in pass defense, allowing teams to average just 140.6 passing yards per game.

NRA Maintains Stranglehold on Congress In the wake of the killing of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., last month and just before Vice President Joe Biden presented a list of proposals to President Obama this week that includes banning assault weapons and limiting sales of high-capacity ammunition clips, the president of the National Rifle Association expressed confidence that new gun legislation will stall in Congress. In an interview Sunday on CNN’s “State Of The Union,” NRA President David Keene said, “I would say that the likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get assault weapons ban through this Congress.” When asked about placing limits on high-capacity ammunition clips, Keene replied, “I don’t think ultimately they are going to get that, either.” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), referring to Keene, said on CNN, “I think he’s wrong.” Murphy explained, “Newtown fundamentally changed things. The NRA doesn’t get this.” Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) acknowledged that it will not be easy to get Congress to ban assault weapons. He told CNN, “I think we have the possibility, but it’s going to be difficult.” Cummings said the prospects are brighter for Congress to place restrictions on high-capacity magazines and require expanded background checks. A 10-year ban on the sale of assault weapons expired in 2004, largely as a result of pressure exerted by the NRA. The organization has risen from being founded in 1871 to help improve marksmanship to a powerful 4 million-member lobbying organization that takes in more than $200 million in annual revenue. According to Opensecrets.org, NRA spent $20 million in the last election cycle, all on friendly lawmakers who score well on the NRA’s political scorecard. The combination of big bucks and political pressure have made too many members of Congress fearful of bucking the powerful gun lobby, a group that doesn’t even want machine guns banned. But there are growing indications that the NRA’s political clout might be vastly overrated. “The gun lobby had an abysmal 2012 election cycle. They spent more than $11 million to defeat President Obama, warning that on Election Day, “Americans will vote either to defend or surrender freedom in the most consequential national decision in U.S. history.” They also failed to elect their preferred candidate in six of their seven top targets for the U.S. Senate. And more than two-thirds of incumbents who lost their seats in the House of Representatives were backed by the NRA, including four Democrats,” noted Media Matters, the watchdog group. And the NRA got a poor return on its political investment. “According to open government group the Sunlight Foundation, the NRA Political Victory Fund, the NRA’s political action committee, received a less than one percent return on $10,536,106 spent on independent expenditures during the election cycle,” the media monitoring group also found. “The NRA spent 0.44 percent of its money supporting winning candidates and 0.39 percent opposing losing candidates. The NRA Institute for Legislative Action, the organization’s lobbying arm, garnered a 10.25 percent return on $7,448,017 spent on the election. In seven Senate races where the NRA spent more than $100,000, six of the NRA-backed candidates lost.” That trend did not start with the November elections, according to ThinkProgress, a liberal blog. Paul Waldman, contributing editor at The American Prospect, analyzed data from the last four federal elections – 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. “If you’ve been following the issue of guns over the last few years, you know that these have been good times for gun advocates,” according to ThinkProgress. “In a landmark 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court settled a longstanding question by declaring that the 2nd Amendment confers an individual right to own guns. Under Barack Obama’s administration, the only pieces of legislation on guns have expanded gun rights; for instance, gun owners are now allowed to bring firearms into national parks as a result of legislation Obama signed in 2009. The assault weapons ban passed under Bill Clinton expired in 2004, and despite early indications the Obama administration might try to renew it, they have made no moves to do so.” Public opinion on gun control has moved, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. It showed that 38 percent of Americans favor stricter gun measures, a 13-point increase from last year and the highest it has been in more than a decade. Now is the time for Obama to make his move. If not, the NRA will do it for him. George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA.) Connecting the Past with the President

One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a flawed document that freed enslaved people in Confederate areas that he did not control. At the same time, it was a progressive document because it initiated discussion about “freedom” Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteen Amendments. One hundred years later, in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. riveted the nation with his “I Have A Dream” speech during the Aug. 28 March on Washington. Many will remember that he said, “I have a dream that one day people will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” Somehow people forget that in the same speech he said, “We have come to the nation’s capital to cash a check that has been marked insufficient funds.” If people said “cash the check” as often as they said “I have a dream,” we’d move more quickly forward in closing the economic gaps that African-American people experience. We’ve been doing this 50-year thing for the past couple years, and we’ll be doing it for another few. The “Greensboro Four” North Carolina A&T State University students (with the help of Bennett College students, who are often ignored) sat in at the Woolworth counter on Feb. 1, 1960. The March on Washington happened 50 years ago. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, and beyond that the ‘60s will resonate for the next few years with commemorations and anniversaries. These celebrations are important historical moments, but who remembers? The median age of the population in the United States is about 37 years old. Many of these folks remember the Civil Rights Movement through twice and thrice told tales. Those who are under the median age see the Civil Rights Movement as something like a fable, something that they heard about, but that doesn’t really matter to them. Many of these young people see themselves as “post-racial.” They hang out with their peers, race notwithstanding. They have never experienced discrimination. Even when they experience it, they are slow to embrace it. They are post-racial, whatever that means. If some of these young people had been immersed in history, they might understand why the Black unemployment rate is twice that of the White rate. If they had books and speeches by King, who spoke of racial disparities in much of his work, they would understand the many ways the struggle continues. But popular culture suggests that when Black folks and White folks can both act extreme fools on reality shows (I think I blanked out after about a minute of “Bad Girls Club”); there is some measure of equality. There has been a rich history and legacy of struggle and protest that has been swallowed by the notion of post-racialism in the first decades of this century. It is laudable that President Obama will use both the Bible of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and that of President Abraham Lincoln, connecting the 150-year-old dots. President Obama’s choice in using both Bibles in this anniversary year is a testament to his sensitivity and ability to juggle the tightrope he must manage as both president of the United States and the first African-American president of our nation. Most folks 50 and older get it. What about those who are both younger than our nation’s median age and unschooled in the nuances of history? Is our conversation about race in America stuck in some kind of time warp, where we are unable to speak cross generationally because we have extremely different memories, recollections, and knowledge about that which happened 50 years ago? We do our nation a disservice when we duck and dodge our racially tinged history. We have to grace and embrace the past in order to move forward with our future. Somehow this is a message that needs to be transmitted to young people, especially in this 150th year after emancipation, this 50th year after the March on Washington, this season of embracing and celebrating our history. BY M. ALEXIS SCOTT

“We urge that a comprehensive jobs program be developed and executed by way of a partnership that includes government, the private sector and the nation’s non-profit community.” – Nov. 7, 2012, National Urban League letter to President Obama, John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi. The December jobs report has confirmed what urban America has known for a very long time: The fierce urgency of “now” is overtaking the slow pace of the economic recovery and continuing partisan gridlock in Washington. The recent jobs report reveals that 155,000 jobs were created last month and overall unemployment remained at a steady and still too high rate of 7.8 percent. But the unemployment picture in urban America tells a decidedly different story. African-American unemployment, which has hovered at twice the national average for decades, has now climbed to 14 percent and the Hispanic jobless rate of 9.6 percent also continues to exceed the national average. Despite the efforts of the Congressional Black Caucus and other progressive voices in Congress, the jobs crisis in urban America has reached emergency proportions and is tearing at the economic and social fabric of many communities. That is why the National Urban League announced last week a new $70 million “Jobs Rebuild America” initiative designed to employ, educate and empower communities that have been hardest hit by the Great Recession. Our campaign is a two-pronged effort. First, through a $70 million public-private expansion of existing Urban League job training, education and business development programs, we intend to directly assist thousands of jobseekers and entrepreneurs in dozens of cities over the next five years. The second component of the Jobs Rebuild America initiative is a public engagement campaign to increase pressure on Washington to invest in the education and skills enhancement of at-risk youth and disadvantaged young adults. We also call for passage of targeted jobs legislation and a responsible fiscal plan and deficit reduction initiatives that do not exacerbate the unemployment crisis. This effort is an outgrowth of the National Urban League’s historic mission of economic empowerment for African Americans and other hard-pressed urban citizens. It also builds upon the work that our network of nearly 100 affiliates has been engaged in since the start of the Great Recession. Our affiliates have served as economic first responders for communities devastated by job loss. They have also been successful in creating economic opportunity and preparing thousands of people to avail themselves of those opportunities. We’ve worked closely with our partners in the private sector and the federal government to maximize resources and mobilize the strength of our collaborative efforts. For this expanded effort, we have put together a powerful coalition of public and private partners who have pledged their expertise and other resources. They include, the U.S. Department of Labor, Nationwide Insurance, Everest College, Pitney Bowes, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Stonehenge, UPS, State Farm, Target, Best Buy, the U.S. Department of Justice, AT&T, Time Warner, Chevron, BP and the New York Stock Exchange. Our collective message is this: While we believe it is important to tackle deficit reduction, job creation remains the nation’s number one priority. We urge the president and the Congress to adopt a balanced approach that marries compassion for the most vulnerable Americans with protections for the nation’s jobs and sacrifice from all. Lincoln, King and Obama Come Together in 2013 So 2013 is already shaping up to be quite a memorable year. On Jan. 1, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order to free the enslaved Blacks in the 10 states in rebellion as part of Abraham Lincoln’s strategy to defeat the Confederacy during the Civil War and re-unite the union. Now, President Barack Obama is using a Bible owned by President Lincoln as he is sworn in on Jan. 21 to his second term as the first Black president of the United States. And as if that weren’t fitting enough, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington during which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. To mark this signal event, President Obama is also using a copy of one of King’s Bibles during his swearing-in ceremony, which will also take place on the 2013 King Holiday. It’s hard to get any more symbolism than this. The combination of Lincoln, King and Obama is certainly one for the history books. It’s especially moving to me, a child of the 1960s who grew up in the segregated South. “President Obama is honored to use these bibles at the swearing-in ceremonies,” said Steve Kerrigan, president and CEO of the Presidential Inaugural Committee. “On the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, this historic moment is a reflection of the extraordinary progress we’ve made as a nation.” The Lincoln Bible is part of the collections of the Library of Congress and was originally purchased by William Thomas Carroll, clerk of the Supreme Court, for use during Lincoln’s swearing-in ceremony on March 4, 1861. The King Bible was Dr. King’s “traveling Bible.” It was used for inspiration and preparation of sermons and speeches, including during Dr. King’s time as pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. “We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the Oath of Office using his Bible,” Dr. King’s children said in a statement. “His ‘traveling Bible’ inspired him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the President as he begins his second term.” While I wasn’t old enough to have marched with Dr. King, Andy Young, John Lewis and others, I feel privileged to have grown up in Atlanta seeing these icons at work. As my family chronicled the fight for equal rights and desegregation through the pages of the Atlanta Daily World, I came of age seeing and experiencing many dramatic changes -- from racial segregation to the election of Atlanta’s first Black mayor in 1973, and the nation’s first Black president in 2008. We have indeed come a long way from the “colored only” signs of my youth to the Obama signs of “hope and change.” And now look at what Bernice A. King is doing as CEO of The King Center. The MLK birthday observance Annual Commemorative Service, also on Jan. 21, will feature the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, the first time a Latino leader will serve as keynote speaker. Elder King calls him “an electrifying orator” and “one of the most dynamic and inspiring proponents of the social gospel in the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.” The program, which will be held in Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary, precedes the swearing-in of President Obama. So here we are, not a month into 2013, and it looks like it will be a remarkable year. I can’t wait to see what happens next. M. Alexis Scott is publisher of Atlanta Daily World.
