All Clear For New Atlanta Falcons Stadium

City Announces Deals to Buy Mount Vernon, Friendship Churches By ADW Staff

The Atlanta Falcons cleared the last major obstacle to securing the preferred site for their new $1 billion retractable roof stadium. Both Friendship Baptist and Mount Vernon Baptist churches voted to sell their properties last week, and this paves the way for the new stadium to be built on the preferred south site, at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Northside drives. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed held a press conference on Sept. 13 with Mount Vernon leaders, who joined him for the announcement. The congregation subsequently voted on Sept. 19 to accept the new $14.5 million offer, down from their original asking price of $20.4 million. The Falcons agreed to pay the difference between the $6.2 million state officials originally offered, Reed said. “We really think we’ve accomplished what we have accomplished today in the Atlanta way,” the mayor said. “Folks are here because they want to be here.” The announcement came just days after the mayor told the Daily World exclusively that there was a 70 percent chance the two sides would come to an agreement and four days after he told reporters the deal would be closed one way or another within “five to seven business days.” While Mount Vernon put the vote before its congregation on Sept. 19, Friendship, which announced an agreement with the city in August, had its vote on Sept. 22.

“I think any time you do a situation like this, you’re gonna have opinions on the entire spectrum of those for and against,” said Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the board of trustees for Friendship Baptist. “But we believe that we would not have come together [on] this point if we did not have a proposal that the church is going to be able to embrace and move forward with.” Pastor Rodney Turner, head of Mount Vernon, said that he was pleased with the current proposal and that the additional money made a difference in negotiations. “We’ve been in prayer (over the decisions),” he said. “We’re a church, not a business.” Reed had stepped into negotiations and enlisted the help of former Atlanta mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young after the Georgia World Congress Center Association failed to come to an agreement with Mount Vernon by an Aug. 1 deadline set by the parties. The mayor has been one of the stadium’s most active supporters since the plan’s inception. There are six other parcels of land that will still remain to be purchased even if the churches agree to sell their land, but Reed said that, unlike the churches, none of those pieces is essential. Building the stadium without any of those parcels would be more difficult but not impossible, he said, according to the Associated Press.

With his wife Evelyn Lowery in critical condition, Dr. Joseph Lowery issued a statement that he will “carry on” with plans for a benefit for the institute named in his honor. Mrs. Lowery, founder of the SCLC/Women’s Organizational Movement for Equality, suffered a stroke last week that caused irreversible damage, the family said. “I Have Known Rivers,” a musical and theatrical production ,which celebrates the work of Dr. Lowery, is scheduled for Oct. 6 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Chapel at Morehouse College. The event is the major source of funding for the Joseph E. Lowery Institute at Clark Atlanta University. Steve Harvey will host the popular benefit and Tyler Perry will receive the first Agent of Change Award. “Tyler Perry serves as the voice for the voiceless and has been working tirelessly as a champion of the common good,” said Cheryl Lowery-Osborne, executive director of the Joseph E. Lowery Institute for Justice and Human Rights. “Central to the mission of the Lowery Institute is to empower, inspire and train current and future leaders as ‘change agents’ to explore the moral, ethical and theological imperatives for justice and human rights.” The Institute was established in 2001 on the campus of Clark Atlanta University to continue the legacy of Dr. Lowery, whose life’s work has been nonviolent advocacy. Two examples of the work of the institute are the anti-violence and conflict resolution programs at Perkinson Elementary School and Sylvan Middle School, as well as a race and reconciliation program with college students. “Mr. Perry has persevered in spite of personal and professional challenges and has achieved incredible results in an industry that has historically limited minority participation,” Lowery-Osborne said. “As an actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, producer and author, he has used his vast business network to employ hundreds of people in underserved areas of our community.” Known as the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement,” Dr. Lowery has held a diverse series of roles over the course of his nine-plus decades, most notably serving as the co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and serving as the organization’s leader for 20 years. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to the nonviolent struggle for the causes of justice, human rights, economic equality, voting rights, peace and human dignity, President Barack Obama awarded him the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, on Aug. 12, 2009. Tickets for the celebration are available for VIP $100 and VIP loge $75, seniors $50 and students $25 on line at www. loweryinstitute.org/92 or by calling 404-524-8406. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Self-Examination

By StatePoint

No one wants to think about breast cancer often, but there’s definitely one person with whom you should discuss the topic annually -- your doctor. From innovative detection tests to new prevention research, your physician can be a great source of information on new ways women are protecting themselves from this life-threatening illness. “Between family, friends and career, a doctor’s appointment may not be a top priority for women. But checkups are integral to breast cancer prevention,” says Dr. Steven Quay, chairman, CEO and president of Atossa Genetics and inventor of the ForeCYTE Breast Health Test. “October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month, is an excellent time to take five minutes to schedule your screening exams,” Quay says. Here are key topics to discuss with your doctor to ensure you make the most of your visit: Risk Breast cancer risk is multifaceted. Age is one factor -- as you get older your risk rises. Certain lifestyle factors can also increase your risk -- being overweight, taking birth control pills, alcohol consumption and not having children. Genetic risk, heredity, the presence of pre-malignant cells and breast density should also be considered. Talk to your doctor about what tests you should be receiving to determine your risk, and if there are lifestyle changes you should make.

Testing Breast cancer can strike at any age. Unfortunately, mammography, the most common test which is now controversial as to its effectiveness, isn’t recommended for younger women. Just as the Pap smear has reduced cervical cancer rates by over 70 percent by finding and treating reversible pre-cancer before it becomes cancer, the goal of Atossa Genetics, maker of ForeCYTE and other diagnostic risk assessments, is to reduce the high rate of breast cancer through early detection of reversible precursor changes that can lead to breast cancer and to treat those early changes. More information about determining your risk for breast cancer can be found at www.AtossaGenetics.com. Lifestyle Maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce your risk for breast cancer. Ask your physician or a registered dietician for advice on improving your diet. Your doctor can also recommend the best way to ease into a fitness routine, taking into account your overall health and current fitness level. If you’re a smoker or drinker, ask your physician to direct you toward resources that can help you curb the habit. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take charge of your health by learning more about early detection, testing options and prevention.

Georgia ranks 10th in population among the 50 states, but 40th in physician supply per 100,000 population. In fact, latest figures show that 15 percent of Georgia’s population is medically underserved for primary care. Access to more specialized services is even worse. “Sisters By Choice is committed to addressing these health disparities, especially with regards to breast cancer,” says group founder Rogsbert Phillips-Reed. “Our initiative is to raise funds to establish and operate a full service Mobile Breast Clinic,” she said. The clinic will reach medically underserved Georgians who live in urban and rural areas of the state, where the lack of transportation and resources are obstacles to adequate cancer detection and treatment. “To our knowledge this will be the first such unit,” she said in a statement on her group’s website. The services will include: breast cancer screening, prevention education and early diagnosis.

Alantheia Peña was diagnosed with breast cancer just after learning that both of her daughters were pregnant. And everything she’d been looking forward to became everything she was going to miss. But a non-profit center—locally funded in part by a grant from Susan G. Komen® —covered Alantheia’s mammograms, mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries. So today, she’s spending lots of time babysitting.

In 2013, approximately 39,620 women are expected to die from breast cancer. Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women. In 2013, about 2,240 cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among men, accounting for about 1 percent of all breast cancers. In addition, approximately 410 men will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer incidence rates are higher in non-Hispanic White women compared to African-American women for most age groups. However, African-American women have a higher incidence rate before 40 years of age and are more likely to die from breast cancer at every age. Incidence and death rates for breast cancer are lower among women of other racial and ethnic groups than among non-Hispanic White and African-American women. Types of Breast Cancer Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), sometimes called infiltrating ductal carcinoma, is the most common type of breast cancer. About 80 percent of all breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas. Invasive means that the cancer has “invaded” or spread to the surrounding breast tissues. Ductal means that the cancer began in the milk ducts, which are the “tubes” that carry milk from the milk-producing lobules to the nipple. Invasive ductal carcinoma” refers to cancer that

has broken through the wall of the milk duct and begun to invade the tissues of the breast. Over time, invasive ductal carcinoma can spread to the lymph nodes and possibly to other areas of the body. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the next common breast cancer. It occurs when abnormal cells grow inside the milk ducts, but stays confined inside the milk duct (has not spread to nearby breast tissue). “In Situ” means in place. The abnormal cells stay inside the milk ducts. You may also hear DCIS called pre-invasive breast cancer. Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) starts in the milk-producing glands (lobules). Like IDC, it can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. About 1 in 10 invasive breast cancers is an ILC. Invasive lobular carcinoma may be harder to detect by a mammogram than invasive ductal carcinoma. Triple-negative breast cancer describes a type of breast cancer that does not have estrogen or progesterone receptors, nor do they have an excess of Her2 protein on their surfaces. This means that the breast cancer cells have tested negative for hormone epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2), estrogen receptors (ER), and progesterone receptors (PR). Anyone can get triple-negative breast cancer. However, researchers have found that it is more likely to occur in younger patients, African-American women, and patients with a BRCA 1 mutation. Triple negative breast cancer can be more aggressive and difficult to

It has a bowl game feel, and the staff has done an outstanding job of making it a first-class event.” “Playing in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game creates a very exciting environment for the fans and players of both teams,” said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech athletics director. “We look forward to opening the season with the defending National Champions in a sold-out Georgia Dome.” In its third Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game appearance, Alabama will look not only to increase its record to 3-0, but will also look to secure a victory that could prove to be imperative in appearing in its third consecutive national championship game. For Virginia Tech, a victory against topranked Alabama would immediately thrust the Hokies into the national spotlight and set them up for a championship run of their own.

Hip-Hop’s Savior: Rap Star Lecrae Prepares to ‘Put on His Church Clothes’... Again How do you follow up the most important Christian hip-hop album of all time? That’s the question standing before 33-year-old rapper Lecrae, a freshly minted addition to Atlanta’s hip- hop community. After his 2012 album “Gravity” hit No. 1 on the rap charts (not the Christian rap charts) and No. 3 on the Billboard 200, he won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel album and his Church Clothes mixtape racked up 100,000 downloads. It was also certified platinum by mixtape kingpin Datpiff.com in 48 hours. To say the least, Lecrae has our attention. He’s also got the attention of hip-hop heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar, DJ Premier, Freddie Gibbs and Saigon, just to name a few, and has been name checked by athletes like Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin, NFL quarterback Tim Tebow and PGA golfer Bubba Watson. “Christian[ity] is my faith,” says Lecrae, “not my genre.” Clearly, he is not defying just the boundaries of Christian rap, but of hip-hop altogether. So where does he go from here? The Atlanta Daily World’s Dion Rabouin talks to one of hip-hop’s most sought after and talked about lyricists regarding where he is personally, where he’s going professionally and the state of hip-hop, secularly and otherwise.

race in america

Sept. 26 - Oct. 2, 2013

Editor’s Note: This is the final installment of the Kellogg Foundation-sponsored 11-part series on Race in America -- Past and Present. It is a compilation of three articles joined together on the topics of health, health care and life spans of Americans and how they intersect with race and class. It has been edited for space considerations. The full installment can be read on www.adwnews.com You’re coming off a huge album – you had the number one rap album, won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel album, you were the first holy hiphop artist to do that. What’s next for you? Lecrae: For me, it’s just continuing to make good music. I’m gonna’ work on the album, I got a mixtape, Church Clothes Vol. 2 coming out with Don Cannon, and for me it’s just bridging the gap between the faith world and the world that is ... that doesn’t really explore faith in music. You know what I’m saying? So, for me it’s about bridging that gap and stepping outside the box. How do you feel about the Atlanta music scene? I’m excited about Atlanta, man. Atlanta brought us Outkast and Goodie Mob, the Dungeon Family, and I thought they did a great job of balancing the reality, the truth in the streets, as well as faith, consciousness. Because consciousness is just us being aware of circumstances [and] of surroundings. It’s not us acting like it doesn’t exist. And that’s what Atlanta brought us, and I see some of that coming back up again, where there’s an exploration of awareness and consciousness and faith and that’s where I want to be able to have … a consistent voice. Is Inequality Shortening Your Life Span?

White, Black, or Brown, we’d all live longer in a more equal, less status-driven society. By Phillip Longman Imagine you got to choose whether to be born Black or born White in America. Here are a few health statistics that might inform your decision: If you chose to be born White, your chances of dying of Parkinson’s disease would be twice as likely as if you chose to be Black. Your chances of dying from cirrhosis of the liver or Alzheimer’s disease would be 25 percent higher. As a White person, you’d also be two and a half times more likely to commit suicide. By contrast, consider the pros and cons of choosing to be born Black, based on life tables alone. To be sure, opting to be Black would reduce your chances of dying from diseases caused by risk factors that rise with age. But it would also severely reduce your chances of living to even your first birthday, let alone growing old enough to retire. This would be particularly true if you chose to be Black and male. To start with, your chances of dying before your first birthday would be roughly 2.3 times greater than if you were born White. If you managed to make it to age one as a Black male child, your chances of dying before your 5th birthday would be 80 percent greater. If you survived to age 15, you’d have a 60 percent greater chance of dying within the next 10 years. If despite these elevated risks of premature death you nonetheless managed to get to your 45th birthday, you’d still be 80 percent less likely to live long enough to collect Social Security than if you had chosen to be White. The vast disparities in health and longevity that exist between the races in the United States violate a fundamental idea of justice that we all carry with us at least to some degree. It is the idea of justice as fairness, of what kind of world we would choose to live in if, as the philosopher John Rawls framed it, we were all impartially situated as equals before being born and did not know what our station in this life would be. Meanwhile, the health status of Both Blacks and Whites improves dramatically with higher income, while the gap between them remains small. Among Blacks and Whites living at just four times the poverty rate, for example, the percent who report poor or fair health drops to 8 percent and 6 percent respectively. Your race per se, in other words, plays little role in predicting your health compared to your income. The gap in health status may also reflect the fact that among families with similar levels of income, as well as educational attainment, Blacks are more likely than Whites to live in neighborhoods with higher concentrations of crime, poverty, pollution, liquor stores, “junk food” outlets, and inferior health care. Conscious or unconscious bias among health care providers may also be at work in explaining the racial health gap, though your chances of receiving substandard health care in the United States vary far more according to where you live than according to the color of your skin. That poverty is deadly is not hard to understand, at least at the extreme. To be very poor means not having enough to eat, being exposed to the elements, and living in areas where homicide and addiction are leading causes of death or where your access to appropriate health care is minimal or nonexistent. In addition, both historically and today, getting seriously sick is likely to make you seriously poor even if you weren’t before. One way researchers have tried to explain correlations between health and social rank is to posit that the losers in our society have become losers because they have poor health. This is no doubt true in some cases. Clearly, if you’re

in the hospital for months following a car crash, lose the ability to walk, and go through life thereafter with hideous facial scars, it is bound to negatively affect your career prospects. The same would be true if you were born already addicted to narcotics or positive for HIV. But to conclude in this instance that your lack of upward mobility is because of your poor health is to beg the question of why you have developed these afflictions in the first place. Maybe you would drink in any event. Maybe you’d describe life as stressful regardless. But would you drink as much, and feel so bad about it in the morning, if you also felt (like that famous, highly effective, long-lived alcoholic Winston Churchill) that you were in command and getting important stuff done? In an intriguing study at Emory University, researchers found, for example, that Black men who reported being victims of racial discrimination experienced an increased risk of heart disease. But a much greater risk of heart disease was found among African-American men who agreed with negative statements about Blacks. Indeed, the highest rates of heart disease were found among African-American men who said they were not personally victims of racial discrimination but still viewed their own race as inferior. Put another way, being or believing yourself to be the victim of racial discrimination is not good for your health, but what’s really bad is to absorb a social belief system that says you are at the bottom. To Live Longer, Move to a New Zip Code Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign emphasizes the importance of physical activity for combating obesity, a point she has driven home by dancing alongside school kids to Beyoncé’s workout video. But another kind of movement may also be important to your chances of living to a ripe old age: moving to a new zip code. Between 1994 and 1998, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development conducted a demonstration project known as “Moving to Opportunity.” The project randomly assigned low-income families to one of three groups. Those in the first group received a voucher that they could use to help pay the rent on an apartment, provided that the apartment was not in a low-income neighborhood. Those in the second group received a voucher they could use in any neighborhood, while those in a control group received no voucher. In 2011, HUD researchers published the results in the New England Journal of Medicine. The most dramatic finding was that people assigned to the different groups varied significantly in their weight by the end of the experiment. Going into the program, participants as a whole had been substantially more obese than the U.S. population as a whole. But 10 to 15 years later, those women who had moved to more affluent neighborhoods were one-fifth less likely to be obese than those in the control group, and also one-fifth less likely to have contracted diabetes. This was true even though there was little difference among all the participants in the numbers who managed to move off welfare, improve their education, or find a better job. This suggests to researchers how powerfully our surroundings alone are to determining our habits and health. Though it might seem strange to say that obesity is contagious, for example, it does seem that people’s risk of it is affected by the weight of their neighbors, as well as by such

environmental factors as whether most of the food for sale in their environs is junk food, as is often the case in America’s most impoverished neighborhoods. Color-Blind Medicine? In 2007, the Journal of General Internal Medicine published the results of a study of residents at four academic medical centers. Participants were asked to review the medical record of an imaginary patient complaining of chest pain. For half the participants, the record included a picture of a middle-aged Black man; for the rest, a middle-aged White man. Participants were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 whether they thought the patient suffered from coronary artery disease, and, if so, whether they believed that the patient should receive a drug treatment known as thrombolysis. The study found that participants who scored high for anti-Black bias on the Implicit Association Tests were less likely to recommend thrombolysis when the Black man’s picture, rather than the White man’s, was included in the medical record, presumably because they believed the Black man would be a less cooperative patient or perhaps less able to pay. The study’s authors concluded that the “[r]esults suggest that physicians’ unconscious biases may contribute to racial/ethnic disparities in use of medical procedures such as thrombolysis.” While few now dispute that some doctors may consciously or unconsciously treat patients of color differently, both the nature of that bias and its importance in explaining racial disparities in health care are highly disputed. For example, in focus groups organized by researchers to assess the role of race in medical practice, Black doctors were far more likely than White doctors to say that a patient’s race is a medically relevant factor in determining the best treatment. As one Black physician in a Philadelphia focus group put it, “I think being an African American is a risk factor in and of itself. And, I think that when you see an African American, then you need to often be more aggressive than you would, and use different standards than you would for the general White population.” But perhaps in this way the White doctors were showing insensitivity to racial realities that Black doctors know better and that are indeed medically relevant. As the organizers of the focus groups concluded, since African Americans as a whole are far more likely than Whites to suffer from hypertension and diabetes, it may be appropriate for doctors to take into account at least some population-based probabilities of disease when deciding protocols of treatment to follow. Color-blind medicine isn’t necessarily the best medicine.

NNPA Columnist
Only a couple of weeks ago, as the nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful “I Have a Dream” speech, I was reminded of the Rev. King’s last birthday, in January 1968. He combined it with work — a staff meeting, planning for the multiracial Poor People’s March, where we made plans to occupy the National Mall. He spoke to us of the need to march to demand an end to the War in Vietnam and to push for a full commitment to the War on Poverty. This week — four-and-a-half decades later — the U.S. Census Bureau reported that “the nation’s official poverty rate in 2012 was 15.0 percent, which represents 46.5 million people living at or below the poverty line.” That’s up from 46.2 million in 2011, and translates to a poverty rate of 15 percent — one out of every seven Americans. The Census Bureau says that number includes about 16 million children and almost 4 million seniors. Is anybody listening? The Census Bureau reported that median household income also dropped. As Reuters summarized it, “While the Standard and Poor’s 500 index gained 16 percent on a total return basis last year . . . median household income slipped to $51,017 from of $51,100 in 2011.” Is anybody listening? Or as Bill Moyers puts it on his web site: “That number may sound familiar to anyone who remembers George H.W. Bush’s first year as president. . . . because household income in 2012 is similar to what it was in 1989.” The Census Bureau report was released on the second anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which drove the issue of inequality in America into public debate. Unfortunately, House Republicans continue to try to head the nation the wrong way down austerity’s one-way street. Their latest act of meanness? The GOP-dominated House voted to cut $40 billion out of food stamps over the next 10 years! The Center for American Progress (CAP) had the details: “In a party-line vote, 217 House Republicans voted to cut $40 billion from the food stamps program.” In a press release titled “Reverse Robin Hood,” CAP continued: “The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that Thursday’s cuts will bump 3.8 million off the program next year, with an additional 2.8 million losing them each year on average over the next decade. Additionally, an estimated 210,000 children will lose access to free school lunch programs and 55,000 jobs will be lost in the first year of cuts alone.” This is not a War on Poverty, but a War on the Poor! Is anybody listening?

Perhaps not in Washington, where the collusion with Wall Street has created a 1 percent economy. As Berkeley professor Emmanuel Saez’s new study shows, “the top 1 percent captured 95 percent of the income gains in the first three years of the recovery.” Ninety-five percent of the gains to the top 1 percent. That’s just not right. Here’s a good example of how such outrageous greed works. Earlier this month, Vodafone agreed to sell its 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless, to the tune of $130 billion. To quote Barron’s, “As it happens, the dividend will be eligible for preferential tax treatment.” Of course it will — the 1 percent writes the rules. Barron’s also noted: “The Vodafone group will incur only about $5 billion in U.S. taxes on the transaction, or just about 4 percent.” You don’t say. Not a single African-American, Latino, or female bond firm will share in the $265 million in fees generated from the mammoth $49 billion bond offering Verizon will use to fund the cash portion of the transaction. And the deal was government approved. But the poor did get some good news this week. It sounds like Pope Francis has been listening, has heard the cries of the poor. When asked what he wished for the Catholic Church, Pope Francis replied in a way that gave me great hope: “ . . . the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. . . . Heal the wounds, heal the wounds. . . . And you have to start from the ground up.” Unfortunately, as writer Steven Rosenfeld pointed out, the “House GOP didn’t get the pope’s memo before slashing food stamps.” These cuts must be blocked. Even better, we could honor Dr. King and the March on Washington with a new War on Poverty. Keep hope alive. Jesse L. Black Consumer Power Still Matters It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Resilient, Receptive and Relevant: The African-Consumer 2013 Report. This is Nielsen and the NNPA’s third comprehensive, in-depth report on African-American consumers. I, along with Cloves Campbell, chairman of the NNPA, and Rev. Jacques DeGraff, who is the co-chair of Nielsen’s External African-American Advisory Council, officially released the report during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 43rd Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. during a press conference. Since I have been writing this column, you’ve seen me repeatedly write about our tremendous buying power and how we are to use that power wisely. Well, guess what? That buying power sees no signs of slowing down. Black buying power is on the rise; and is expected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2017. That’s some serious economic clout. How and where we use it is explained in this year’s report, with an even more thorough picture of the African-American consumer. There is so much valuable information; we can’t possibly digest it all in one sitting, so, in the coming weeks, I’ll help explain this report section by section. So, this week, let’s start with our strength in the U.S. population – the demographic information. On average, our population is three years younger than other demos – 35 compared to 38, which is a coveted age for marketers. Our population numbers have grown 64% faster than any other group in the country since 2010, which includes people who claim Black and another race. That’s 43 million Black people, or 14%, of the entire population – the largest racial minority in the United States. The Black population remains the largest racial minority in the United States as Hispanic is an ethnic identity, not a race. Blacks live all over the country, mostly in or around large metropolitan areas such as New York City, Atlanta and Chicago. But, 55% of us live in the South. And here’s an interesting fact, Blacks who moved to the South were young – 40% were adults ages 21 to 40. So, the Southern migration is not limited solely to older retirees. Now, you all know I love Beyoncé’s “Girls Run the World.” And as a matter of fact, we do! Black women are a force to be reckoned with, representing 52% of employed Blacks, controlling 43% of the $1 trillion current, collective African-American spending power, and owning the majority of Black businesses. The insights in this report do, indeed, show that we are a resilient group, but the report also documents our ability to thrive through tough economic times. Seventy-three percent of Whites and 67% of Hispanics believe that Blacks are a great influence on popular culture. Think about it: music (e.g. jazz, blues & hiphop), clothes, language (e.g. slang) and gestures (e.g. “fist bumps,” made even more popular by the Obamas).

Education is important to us. The number of African-American college graduates was up 9% between 1990 (11%) and 2010 (20%). And, in a myth-shattering revelation, the report shows that we spend 44% more time on Education and Career sites than the total market consumers. Did you know that we read financial magazines like Forbes, Fortune and Black Enterprise, 28% more than other consumers? And, we spend an average 87 minutes on finance and investment websites. That’s 12% more than other groups. On the flip side, we could catch up in the actual purchase of mutual funds, first mortgages and stocks. But, the curiosity is there, which helps illustrate to financial institutions that there are opportunities to market and create more awareness about services to Black audiences. Now, we are just getting started, so stay tuned. You can also find a four-page copy of the report in the coming weeks, inserted into your newspaper. Check it out and let us know what you think. Okay, so, I’ve been doing all the talking here for the last three years, but I want to hear from you! Talk to me and let me know what you think. Let’s keep the conversation going.
