Election Update: Georgia’s Diverse Electorate Chipping Away at Republican Stronghold

By Terry Shropshire Georgia, long a fiery “red state,” is in the process of changing colors. And for Democrats, left-leaning pundits and minorities, the hope that the state’s 2014 elections will turn the tide towards returning Georgia to the” blue state” status it held during the first half of the 20th century. Democrats are predicting that Atlanta’s, and Georgia’s, increasingly diverse population will continue to loosen the GOP’s stranglehold on power in state government in the Deep South. It’s in the state government race that the hopes and dreams of new millennium Democrats and minorities will be put to the test. Republican Gov. Nathan Deal steamrolled over his GOP competition in the primaries on Tuesday, May 20, accumulating more than 70 percent of the vote in early returns. He easily defeated former Dalton Mayor David Pennington and State School Superintendent John Barge. Next on the governor’s target list: a formidable opponent and popular Democratic state Sen. Jason Carter, the grandson of the unabashed liberal and former President Jimmy Carter. Minorities also fared well in state elections when you discuss the LGBT community. State Rep. Simone Bell easily defeated a challenge from Erica Long, taking 63 percent of the vote from Long’s 36 percent. With no Republican in the November race, Bell will keep her District 58 seat. State Rep. Karla Drenner, the first openly gay lawmaker in Georgia history, will keep her District 85 seat. She ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and faces no GOP opposition in November. The same goes for

state Rep. Keisha Waites, also openly gay, in District 60. Futon County Commissioner Joan Garner, who became the commission’s first-ever openly gay member when she won election in 2010, coasted to another term on Tuesday. She dispatched Eddie Brewster, 70.71 percent to 29.39 percent. When you factor in that Republicans were passing laws cracking down on people who violate immigration laws, Georgia’s GOP will find it hard to attract the growing population of Hispanic and Asian voters. Back to the state government. Deal’s campaign will focus on a tougher Democratic opponent in Carter in November’s general election. And, after his victory was well in hand, Deal aimed his sights on Carter. “You can achieve prosperity by keeping government small, by keeping taxes low, by giving people more freedom of choice in terms of where their child gets an education,” said Deal. “This is what our campaign will continue to be about. And we will contrast it with that of the party that wants to raise your taxes, that wants to take away your freedom and wants to tell you what to do because they believe government knows best.” Carter’s campaign spokesperson countered Deal’s statements by saying Carter had never voted for a tax increase and criticized Deal for underfunding the education system. “A real vision for education, a real vision for an economy that works is something we just haven’t been getting in Georgia,” Carter said in an interview. White Georgia’s electorate voted heavily Democratic as a legacy of the U.S. Civil War. That continued until President Lyndon Johnson successfully ushered the landmark Civil Rights

Bill of 1964 through Congress (that was initiated by Democratic President John F. Kennedy). The backlash from that historic act enabled the Republican Party to steal away white Democrats and recruit them to the party. Deal, for example, was a Democrat when he was first elected to Congress before stepping across the political aisle to become a Republican. The complete GOP takeover of the state happened when Republican Sonny Perdue beat incumbent Democrat Roy Barnes in the new millennium. Republicans now hold every statewide office and enjoy a considerable majority in the state legislature. There are significant signs that the political tide is changing to turn the state from all red to a purplish combination of red and blue. • High-profile Democrats finished within a few percentage points of defeating Republicans. • President Obama won 47 percent of the Georgia vote in 2008 even though he did not campaign in the state, according to T.J. Copeland, the president of the Young Democrats of Atlanta. • Copeland also noted that Obama won almost 46 percent of Georgia voters during his 2012 re-election — despite incessant Republican criticism of Obama’s first term. • Georgia is undergoing a steady demographic shift, however not enough to cause a paradigm shift in the political landscape as of yet. For example, when Perdue broke the Democratic hold on the governor’s office in 2002, black voters were approximately 23 percent of the turnout. In 2010 midterms, black turnout climbed 28 percent and actually got to 30 percent during Obama’s first campaign.

Georgia GOP Primary Costs $30 Per Vote By BILL BARROW, Associated Press

(AP) — The first round of Senate Republican primary voting in Georgia cost the campaigns and outside groups nearly $30 per vote, at least. That’s based on an Associated Press analysis of spending by the campaigns and independent groups that poured millions of dollars into the race. The two biggest spenders, multimillionaire businessman David Perdue and Rep. Jack Kingston, advanced to a July 22 runoff in a race that will help determine which party controls the Senate for the final two years of President Barack Obama’s administration. Federal Elections Commission disclosures show Republican candidates reported spending $13.2 million through the end of April, while outside groups raised the total to at least $17.5 million through Tuesday. Just over 600,000 of Georgia’s 5 million or so active registered voters cast Republican ballots Tuesday.

Jay Z Opens Club-Airport at Hartsfield By JONATHAN LANDRUM Jr., Associated Press

(AP) — Jay Z brought a 40/40-style club to the world’s busiest airport on Wednesday, May 21, with the opening the swanky bar’s third location. Hova’s Club-Airport is open to ticketed passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to spokeswoman Victoria Hong of Delaware North Companies, which partners with the rap mogul. The sports bar is in the airport’s Concourse D concessions area, Hong said. “We want to have the same type of feel as the regular 40/40 Club,” Hong said. “It’s the airport version of the 40/40 Club.” Airport concessions director Paul Brown said there are plans to create a VIP lounge area of the club, separate from the sports bar — at 1,500 square feet — on a different floor. The lounge is expected to open in the late

The statement from Mr. Obama was the first time he has spoken publicly about the growing furor over the veterans hospitals since he answered a question on the topic during his trip to Asia this month. White House officials are hoping to tamp down political attacks on the subject by demonstrating that the president takes the situation seriously and is prepared to act.

(AP) — A final settlement says the state will pay more than a million dollars to the former director of the state ethics commission and her lawyers. A settlement agreement was signed Wednesday, May 21 and. according to its terms, Stacey Kalberman will receive just over $725,000, and her lawyers will get nearly $425,000, for a total of about $1.15 million. Kalberman alleged ethics agency commissioners in 2011 cut her salary and eliminated her deputy’s position as the pair sought to issue subpoenas in their investigation into ethics complaints against Gov. Nathan Deal. Commissioners denied any wrongdoing, but a jury last month awarded Kalberman more than $700,000 in damages. Deal was later cleared of major violations in the ethics probe and agreed to pay $3,350 in administrative fees.

God Has Your Back … Jay Z and Minute Meditation: Prayer For Beyoncé Deserve Privacy Parents With Graduates By Deborah Smith Simpkins

Why should Jay Z and Beyoncé have to give us a statement about a private matter of their lives? I can hear the naysayers now, “They are celebrities and therefore have given up the right to any privacy.” Most will defend such an implication mostly because candidly speaking ‘we the people’ are nosy! We have so much time on our hands that the business of celebrities seem to overtake more of our lives than we care to admit. I lost count of the post, threads, blogs and funny antics that were displayed about the Jay Z/Solange physical altercation. Many of us: watched it, talked about it, and some even shared it adding our own opinions and anecdotes to the situation. I can’t help but ask did anyone ever consider the feelings of the parties involved? Beyoncé and Jay Z are no doubt superstars in their own right and because of the enormity of their talent and influence we the public is intrigued by their personal lives and lifestyle. But they are also human and deserve privacy and respect. They entertain us and their talents bring joy into our lives in various ways then how at the same time we become so vicious and presumptuous in taking pleasure in what appears to be their personal family matter. I must have missed the memo that celebrity status excludes one from private moments. This incident goes beyond stardom and digs into some familiar ground that many of us can relate – misunderstandings among loved ones. There was no audio on that tape; therefore we can’t determine whatreally happened. But we can decide and decipher from the video footage that there are problems that need to be resolved. But candidly speaking it’s not our business! It’s hard to live your life in front of the camera at all times. We all have a need for private moments and that includes Beyoncé and Jay Z. If there is any truth to the supposed tweet suggesting domestic violence in the marriage of Jay Z and Beyoncé, this problem goes beyond an elevator incident stolen on camera and shared with the public; and trends far more serious into the need for professional assistance. I would like to add that the footage does not in any way show or indicate any violence between Jay Z or Beyoncé towards one another – it’s very sad that people are

6

so desperate for drama and controversy that they will read and contrive more into a situationthan what is actually presented. However, Domestic Violence is real for celebrities and lay people alike. What would be most important in this situation is problem solving whatever vices they are dealing with as a couple and as a family instead of exploiting and assuming a personal matter and making your opinions public. More importantly, we can’t jump to any conclusions, as we so quickly like to do. The facts are sketchy and we may never know the truth of what really happened and that’s okay. This is a private matter and the Carter’s have every right to handle it as such without fans feeling some needfor an explanation. Have we gotten so cold and heartless that we don’t’ understand the need to handle some matters in private? There are many family dimensions to this situation. There are sisters involved, which could mean there is some parental involvement, and there is a husband and wife relationship, combined with the in-lawfactor. All of these are important family dynamics that have come into question since the media explosion. When we care about people, we should be more concerned with their well-being then with their demise. True fans of Jay Z & Beyoncé should understand andrespect their privacy. True fans would give them the time needed to deal with family and/or marriage issues. Candidly speaking this incident could be just the jolt needed forcing all parties to take a serious look at themselves and make necessary changes. Yeah I know there will be many that won’t understand or agree with me so they can satisfy their own guilty pleasures. The point is simply this, celebrity status or not, we all deserve some privacy to deal with our issues! They seem to have moved past the incident, now it is time for us to do the same. I appreciate the talents of this family and I support their need for privacy. I hope that people would stop fueling the fire but rather pray and encourage healing and restoration. Seek good and not entertainment at another person’s expense. We have to lift each other up instead of kicking them further down. Whatever the problem is God has your back if you choose to accept Him! Beyoncé and Jay Z’s talents are on a worldwide stage but their personal lives are not.

Graduation season is here. It is the time of year where parents face fears and tears. Here is a prayer to help you get through the day: O Heavenly Father, I commend my children to Thy care. Be Thou their God and Father; and mercifully supply whatever is lacking in me through frailty or negligence. Strengthen them to overcome the corruptions of the world, whether from within or without; and deliver them from the secret

snares of the enemy. Pour Thy grace into their hearts, and strengthen and multiply in them the gifts of Thy Holy Spirit, that they may daily grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ; and so, faithfully serving Thee here, may come to rejoice in Thy presence hereafter. Quincy Jones on Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’: ‘It’s About Money’ Quincy Jones is not a fan of Michael Jackson’s “new stuff.” The producer who masterminded the King of Pop’s solo rise to superstardom, including such seminal albums as Off the Wall and Thriller, recently gave a blunt assessment of Jackson’s latest posthumous album release, Xscape. “It’s about money,” Q said. “They’re trying to make money. And I understand it. Everybody’s after money, the estate, the lawyers. It’s about money.” The L.A. Reid-helmed Xscape is flying high in sales charts around the world, according to Billboard. Xscape opened at No. 1 on the official U.K. Albums chart this week and it’s charging toward the top spot on the Billboard 200. The album’s lead producer was Timbaland, with additional work courtesy of Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome “Jroc” Harmon and John McClain. When asked if he was bothered by the on-

going rollout of recordings featuring the late star, Jones replied, “Yeah, but it’s not my business anymore. They’re not our business.” Jones’ comments come on the heels of a $10 million breachof-contract lawsuit he filed in connection with Jackson’s projects released after the singer’s 2009 death. In a complaint filed last October in Los Angeles Superior Court, Jones alleged that master recordings he worked on were wrongfully edited and remixed so as to deprive him of back-end profit participation. Jones also asserted that he’d been denied credit for his work on the late singer’s releases and that MJJ Productions and Sony Music have entered into side deals taking profits that should have been included in the calculation of royalties. In a recent interview, Jones goes deep into the sessions on Thriller, and he dispelled the oft-told tale of how he’d initially rejected

Michael Jace Update: Newly-Released Docs Prove Abusive Past There are new updates in the case on Michael Jace, “The Shield” actor who shot and killed his wife, April Jace, in front of their children this week. According to reports, the 48-year-old has a history of domestic abuse. Before starting a relationship with April, Jace was married to a woman named Jennifer Bitterman from 1996-2002. During their divorce proceedings, she testified that Jace was extremely violent and often displayed that behavior around their son. According to officials, “a woman described as a close friend of his first wife said in a sworn statement that she witnessed Jace physically abusing his wife in 1997.” In the declaration, Maria De Le Vegas said Jace “choked and hit” his wife and “slammed her against the wall while (their infant son) screamed in his crib next to her.” She added that he “was raging and out of control, and seeing the extent of his anger was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen.” April actually defended Jace during his

divorce from ex-wife Jennifer. April, who police found dead at 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 19, told the divorce judge that “Michael provided a stable home for his child, though she never addressed the claims he choked and hit Jennifer Bitterman and slammed her against the wall in front of their screaming son.” April, who had a degree in early childhood/adolescence development, claimed Jennifer was a bad mom. She told the court, “Usually at bedtime, he [Jordan, the child] prays for his mom and asks God to protect her while he’s not there with her.” Sources say severe money troubles may have also been a motive for the shooting. In March 2011, Jace filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy, citing $500,000 in debts and an annual income of around $80,000. And at the time of the shooting, he owed $22,000 in state and federal income taxes, and defaulted on the $411,000 mortgage for his Los Angeles home where the shooting took place.

Beckford will play Adrian, the club’s former star attraction who finds his popularity fading as the new kid starts to steal the spotlight. Team Usher Gets First Win on ‘The Voice’

“This movie was in gestation for 2 1/2 years, but after ‘Magic Mike’ it seemed a natural fit for the African American female audience,” LaMarr explained. “I researched the male exotic club scene and it’s massive across the country, with clubs specifically targeting middle-aged African American women.” The filmmaker has a deal with Eone’s non-theatrical urban features division but is hoping to shop it to a studio that can take ‘Chocolate City’ to theaters in a strategic rollout to urban markets where women flock to black male strip club.. The story also has a faith-themed subplot involving the protagonist’s struggle to balance his religious upbringing with his newfound career on the stripper stage. Chocolate City is set to start production in Los Angeles in June. White recently appeared on The CW’s “Arrow.” Beckford appears in the upcoming drama “Addicted.”

For millions of high school students, graduation is right around the corner, and while taking the SATs/ACTs and campus visits are an important part of the college preparation process financing is just as critical. It’s no secret that college can be expensive. According to the College Board, the average tuition cost and fees in 2013-2014 were $22,203 for out-of-state residents and $8,893 for residents at public colleges. But what about the non-tuition college expenses and financial considerations like books, meals, housing, campus events/activities, cell phone plans, home visits and insurance? There are many resources available for parents and students to learn about college planning, but few paint a comprehensive picture of financing and how it works. Most banks offer products to help with educational expenses. Wells Fargo launched a new interactive platform, the Get College ReadySM website, to help parents and students estimate what their financial needs might be as they begin their planning journey. This website includes many interactive and informative features, including an online quiz, a step-by-step video series and the CollegeSTEPS® magazine. Among the interactive tools, the site includes a College Cost Calculator that helps calculate and determine how much money students may need to borrow annually for college.

Access to credit cards can be very convenient when making payments online and over the phone “Having good credit is an important part of building a strong financial future,” explained John Rasmussen, head of Wells Fargo’s Education Financial Services. “Our hope as a responsible lender is to provide college-bound students and their families with a holistic view of the small pieces that make up planning for college – including providing financial education to help them make responsible credit decisions.”

The Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education 60 years ago began when Oliver L. Brown, a welder, went to court because his daughter Linda could not attend Sumner Elementary School in Topeka, Kan., seven blocks from her home. The Supreme Court ruled definitively that “separate but equal” has no place in the American Constitution, that separate facilities are inherently unequal. Sixty years later, residential patterns have resegregated many of our schools. First lady Michelle Obama speaking in Topeka noted “many young people in America are going to school largely with kids who look just like them. Too often, those schools aren’t equal, especially ones attended by students of color, which too often lag behind, with crumbling classrooms and less experienced teachers.” And if schoolrooms have resegregated, boardrooms have never really desegregated. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. Yet, just as it is important to understand what remains to be done, the historic importance of the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown should not be overlooked. Brown overturned the ignominious Supreme Court in Plessy vs. Ferguson, in which the court ruled that separate but equal train facilities fulfilled the constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment. Just as Plessy wasn’t solely about train cars, Brown wasn’t solely about schools. Plessy legitimized legal apartheid in the United States. African Americans in the South were banned from using white public facilities, libraries, transportation, swimming pools, schools and more. Segregation ruled all aspects of life from birthplaces to graveyards. With its decision in Brown, the Supreme Court ruled that separate but equal had no place under our Constitution. It ended legal segregation not just in classrooms but also in all aspects of life. For those of us who were growing up at the time, the ruling was truly revolutionary. Loving parents, fearful for their children’s safety, had taught us to respect the walls that had been built under segregation. We should limit our dreams to the opportunities that existed behind the walls. In Brown, the Supreme Court declared that the walls were unconstitutional. We had rights. We had to march and protest, sit-in, get arrested, and risk our lives to affirm those rights, but we no longer had walls to limit our dreams. From Brown came the New South. From Brown and the Voting Rights Act came new possibility. And as the election of Barack Obama dramatized, the dreams of our young no longer are limited. When the Brown decision was announced, the news spread rapidly through Greenville, S.C., where I was raised. People were abuzz, but didn’t quite

know what desegregation would mean. One neighborhood sage said it was like a decision to mix salt and pepper together into one jar. “Oh,” another said, “that’s going to be a long time coming.” And so it was, but from the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown, those trying to enforce segregation were on the wrong side of the Constitution and the law. Yet, the end of legal segregation, as we’ve learned, did not mean the end of discrimination. In his commencement address to the graduates of Morgan State University, Attorney General Eric Holder noted this isn’t simply a problem of “high-profile expressions of outright bigotry,” like those of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling or Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy. Holder pointed rather to far more damaging, systemic practices that are discriminatory in fact, if not in form. In our criminal justice system, for example, African-American men are more likely to be stopped than whites, more likely to be searched if stopped, more likely to be charged if arrested, more likely to be prosecuted if charged, and, if convicted, as the attorney general noted, are hit with sentences that are on average 20 percent harsher than white men convicted of similar crimes. This systemic discrimination can destroy lives and erase opportunity. Similarly, Holder rightly singled out the new measures designed to constrict voting that disproportionately disadvantage African-Americans and Hispanics. These measures, he noted, are rationalized as a supposed answer to an “epidemic of voter fraud” that “has never been shown to exist.” Racial discrimination remains a battleground in America. The conservative majority in the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has been systematically weakening civil rights laws from voting rights to affirmative action. Roberts, Holder generously suggested, assumes that racial discrimination has virtually been eliminated and need not be actively confronted. This is contrary to the experience of most African-Americans and other people of color, no matter how successful. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissenting from a Roberts’ decision, wrote that we should not “wish away, rather than confront, the racial inequality that exists in our society. … The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race.” Surely her dissent offers greater wisdom for the country. And her position on the court to offer that dissent is a testament to how far we have come, and to the great transformation the Supreme Court helped to launch with its decision in Brown vs. Board of Education.

On April 29, a death row inmate in Oklahoma died of a heart attack after a botched execution. At age 23 Clayton D. Lockett was convicted of murder and had been on death row for 15 years. During his recent execution, shortly after the anesthetic drugs were administered, Mr. Lockett began to writhe in extreme pain and died shortly after. The drug mixture used to execute him was not wholly administered due to a vein failure. His death has raised serious questions about the humane nature of capital punishment and following Mr. Lockett’s death President Obama indicated that the U.S. Department of Justice would begin a review into capital punishment in America. Mr. Lockett’s death has provoked all of us into an overdue conversation on the merits of the death penalty. For years research has indicated that there is a disturbing racial bias when deciding who gets sentenced to the death penalty. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics there were 3,082 death row inmates in 2011 and more than half of them were African American or Hispanic. African Americans and Hispanics only make up about 30 percent of the U.S. population, but more than half of prison inmates on death row. There is significant evidence that suggest jurists are more likely to sentence minority offenders to the death penalty than white offenders. A Michigan State University review of North Carolina’s court system found evidence that African-American’s were systematically excluded from juries determining sentences for convicts eligible for capital punishment. They found that qualified black jurors were twice more likely to be removed from juries than whites. In addition, the review found that individuals who committed crimes against whites were more likely to receive the death penalty. More than 80 percent of executions in North Carolina involved white murder victims. I also am concerned with the number of individuals on death row who have been wrongfully accused. Since 1973, more than 130 people have been released from death row due to wrongful convictions. The most recent case occurred in 2012. A joint study led by University of Michigan Law Professor Sam R. Gross found that 4.1 percent of death row inmates during the modern era have been wrongfully executed. Famously, in 2004 Cameron Todd Willingham was executed after being accused of burning his home down and killing his three children. After his death investigators discovered there was no evidence to suggest the fire was started by arson. Mr. Willingham and several others have been wrongfully executed under our nation’s existing capital punishment laws.

Following the botched execution in Oklahoma the Justice Department announced it would begin a review of executions in America. Additionally, President Obama acknowledged that there is evidence of uneven application of the death penalty as well as individuals who have been wrongly convicted on death row. Attorney General Eric Holder, an established opponent of the death penalty, will be responsible for the upcoming review on capital punishment. I welcome this upcoming inquiry and hope to see changes in current policy. The death penalty in America runs contrary to our nation’s commitment to international human rights and racial equality and it should be repealed.
