TRICKERY AND TREACHERY. Using a contrarian strategy that included bluffing Kevin Harvick onto pit road earlier than planned in the final stage of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, Martin Truex Jr. pulled off a convincing victory in the 16th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the season. 5 THE PLAYOFF PICTURE CONTINUES TO TAKE SHAPE BY JARED TURNER
W
ith 16 races down and just 10 to go before the 16-driver field is set for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, six drivers have punched their tickets into the championship field. Those six drivers — Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano and Austin Dillon — are in by virtue of each having at least one win this season. If the playoffs began today, the rest of the field would be set based on points, which means that Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Aric Almirola, Ryan Blaney, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones and Alex Bowman would also make the cut. The first driver currently on the outside looking in is Ricky Stenhouse Jr., followed by Paul Menard, Daniel Suarez and rookie William Byron. How important is winning a race to making the playoffs? Without his win in the Daytona 500, Dillon wouldn’t be in. SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

4 THE CREAM HAS RISEN TO THE TOP — AND SEEMS TO BE STAYING THERE
T
he first 16 races of the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season have produced only six different winners: Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano and Austin Dillon. Among those six winners, four have combined for 14 wins. In other words, if parity in sports is your thing, the 2018 season hasn’t been the season for you. The good news is that come time for the playoffs, it’s doubtful that this season’s four repeat winners — Harvick, Busch, Truex and Bowyer — will continue to be so head and shoulders above the competition. For whatever reason, the playoffs have historically leveled the playing field somewhat among the haves and have-nots, and this season may be no different. Then again, maybe 2018 is the exception to the rule, and the heavyweights continue to have their way all the way through the season finale at Homestead. Stay tuned. SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

HARVICK GOT SNOOKERED BUT TOOK IT ON THE CHIN
N
o one could have faulted Kevin Harvick for sulking after missing out on a win that would have been his if Martin Truex Jr.’s crew chief, Cole Pearn, hadn’t essentially baited him into pitting earlier than the optimal time. But instead of bemoaning the situation or perhaps criticizing his own crew chief, Rodney Childers, Harvick took his Sonoma disappointment on the chin. “I don’t really know what is going on up on the pit box and who is doing what,” said Harvick, who finished second after leading 35 of 110 laps. “You make some right ones, you make some bad ones, and sometimes you guess right and sometimes you guess wrong. Who knows what is right or wrong?” Pearn, meanwhile, was modest when asked about his oh-so-tricky strategy, which ultimately paid off in a big way. “I think you’ve got to take the opportunities when they present themselves,” he said. AJ ALLMENDINGER BLEW A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
A
ny trip to a road course offers former open-wheel driver AJ Allmendinger a golden opportunity to steal a win. It happened at Watkins Glen in 2014 — when Allmendinger earned the only victory of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career to date — and there’s probably at least a decent chance it will happen again. However, it was not meant to be on Sunday at Sonoma. And, unfortunately for Allmendinger, he had no one to blame but himself. After leading five laps and actually winning the first stage, Allmendinger saw his day come to an abrupt end just four laps into Stage 2 when he missed a shift on his No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing car. Instead of contending for a win that could have punched his ticket into the playoffs, Allmendinger retired with a blown engine and a lastplace finish. Thanks to driver error, it was truly an opportunity missed. SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

1 COLE PEARN IS MR. SLICK
M
artin Truex Jr. probably didn’t have the best car on Sunday at Sonoma, but a shrewd pit call by crew chief Cole Pearn won him the race. In fact, Pearn’s pit call wasn’t just shrewd; it was downright deceptive — in a good way. Basically, Pearn deliberately ordered Truex to pit over the in-car radio, then at the last minute changed the call and told Truex to stay out. Listening in to the No. 78 team’s radio frequency was Kevin Harvick crew chief Rodney Childers, who promptly ordered his driver to follow suit and pit at the same time as Truex, who was the second-place driver. Only Truex stayed out and didn’t pit until several laps later, ultimately giving him an advantage that won him the race. Childers, despite licking his wounds a bit after essentially being faked out, later showed tremendous class by congratulating Pearn and Truex in Victory Lane. SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

DENNY HAMLIN IS RIGHT ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA BY JARED TURNER
D
enny Hamlin made some ears perk up over the weekend when dishing on a topic — social media and, specifically, Twitter — that is at the heart of NASCAR culture these days. Hamlin, a veteran driver who admittedly has been guilty of at times inserting the proverbial foot in mouth with his various Twitter musings, has apparently changed the way he approaches dialogue on the popular social networking website. “I’ve been very good this year about not replying to mean people, and you all should
do the same,” he said in a press conference. “I am making a ploy right now to every driver, every team owner, every NASCAR executive and every media member — stop replying to people that make nonsense comments. They have 16 followers; don’t give them your 100,000. Do not give them your 100,000 as their stage. No one will ever see their comment. Just brush it by. Talk about the positives. And I’m not a positive guy.” Hamlin then offered one more little nugget about how to deal with the Twitter trolls, describing such a person as “an admirer that has lost their way.” This is advice that just about everyone with a social media account — NASCAR Nation not excluded — would be wise to live by. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

SPOTLIGHT The Chicago PIRTEK team meets for the recent grand opening of PIRTEK Bolingbrook. Multiple PIRTEK centers keep industry in the Windy City covered when hydraulic hose failures occur.
PIRTEK O’HARE ANSWERS EMERGENCY CALL TO FIX HYDRAULIC ISSUE AT CONCERT BY JARED TURNER
H
ydraulic hoses are everywhere – not just in the most obvious places. We expect to find them in heavy, industrial equipment. But they’re more ubiquitous than people realize. In Chicago, PIRTEK got the call to work on some hoses at the famed Lollapalooza music festival.
Lollapalooza tours North America every year with a number of musical acts: alternative rock, punk, metal, comedy and others. While people were setting up the event in Chicago, crew members noticed the loading dock to the stage was a foot too low. A piece of equipment that raises and lowers the loading dock had failed – the unfortunate result of a hydraulic leak. The company responsible for setting up the temporary stages began scour the Chicago area for someone to replace hydraulic hoses on the stage-raising equipment. SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

SPOTLIGHT “They called a repair company up, and those people said the job would take three days,” said Bert Banaszak, branch manager of PIRTEK O’Hare in Elk Grove Village, IL. “So, the customer did an internet search and found us.” PIRTEK is the world’s leading hydraulic and industrial hose replacement service, the only franchise of its kind in the United States. There are 75 PIRTEK franchises and a fleet of Mobile Service Vehicles throughout the United States. Globally, PIRTEK has more than 400 locations and 2,000 Mobile Service Vehicles in 23 countries. One of PIRTEK O’Hare’s Mobile Service Vehicles responded immediately to the call and headed for the venue on Lakeshore Drive. “Even with the Chicago traffic, we arrived onsite within an hour to do the work,” said Banaszak, adding that the city’s safety inspector was onsite when they got there to oversee the process.
Banaszak and his technician performed the work efficiently and quickly. “We were in and out in 20 minutes,” Banaszak said. “The job was done perfectly,” said a spokesperson for the stage company. “They were super-fast, they did the job in no time and it was done professionally – no leaks.” The company builds mobile hydraulic stages and deploys them at major concert venues throughout North America. Their products are in use at more than 20,000 events in 50+ countries every year. The spokesperson said he plans to call a nearby PIRTEK USA location in the future if any other stages in the United States need hose work. “The job was awesome,” he added. “And the guys were super cool.” PIRTEK’s work helped keep the show on schedule. Radiohead, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and more than 170 other bands were on stage at the Chicago event.

SPOTLIGHT brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

STILL GOT IT ELDER ALLISON TAKES TALLADEGA’S WINSTON 500 BY BEN WHITE
O
n May 4, 1986, Bobby Allison, driver of the No. 22 Stavola Brothers Racing Buick, sealed the deal by taking the lead over Buddy Baker with only five laps remaining to win the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Dale Earnhardt dropped Baker to third and challenged Allison for the win. On the final lap, Earnhardt made his move for the lead in turn three, taking the point but slipped briefly. Allison overtook him on the high side in turn four as they raced for the checkered flag.
An interesting storyline prevailed throughout the race weekend. All 42 cars in the field qualified over 200 miles per hour led by Elliott, the pole sitter at 212.229 to set a world record for a stock car that remains today. Elliott led 116 of the race’s 188 laps but fell off the pace with a blown engine 13 laps from the finish. After Elliott’s issues, the trio of Allison, Earnhardt and Baker battled closely for the win with Allison out powering them at the finish. “It’s been a little too long for me,” Allison said that day about his two-year winless drought. “I’ve had a habit of having things slip out of my grasp. I may be over the hill (at age 48) but I’m enjoying what I’m doing. But I have to admit, I wouldn’t have won without Bill’s troubles.” SONOMA REARVIEW: JUNE 25, 2018

C
oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle
back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products
contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

SPOTLIGHT the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey
Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and
everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com
