NASCAR MADE THE WRONG CALL In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the twists and turns of the four and a half hour Talladega playoffs race, and he certainly has a lot to say after that controversial and polarizing finish. Thanks to some massive red flag incidents, the race stretched on into a mind boggling triple overtime before it was all over. Everything from the last few laps seemed debatable and arguable among the fans. 0 0 4
DiBenedetto’s hardline blocking, Denny Hamlin’s movement below the yellow line for solid position, none of it seemed to sit right. Eric talks us through moment by moment. But that’s not all! Eric also takes us through the finishing order, and their importance on the playoffs moving forward. Plus, he puts the whole thing on his patented Groovy Gauge. How did this controversial race wind up? Find out on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

ild. Crazy. Bizarre. Perplexing. On a day that featured enough drama for an entire season, much less a single afternoon of racing, Denny Hamlin seemingly came out of nowhere to score a controversial win at Talladega Superspeedway and in the process become the second driver to punch a ticket into the NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8. While Hamlin celebrated his seventh victory of 2020, others bemoaned the outcome — an outcome that will undoubtedly be discussed and analyzed for quite some time. Following are five lessons learned in the YellaWood 500. BY JA RED TURNER

PEOPLE WERE SIMPLY DRIVING OVER THEIR HEADS
T
ypically, you can count on at least one “Big One” at Talladega Superspeedway. On Sunday, there several multi-car wrecks — most of which were caused by people simply being overly aggressive in the draft. Among those responsible for triggering these melees were Clint Bowyer, Tyler Reddick, Alex Bowman and Bubba Wallace. When all the dust settled, roughly three-fourths of the cars in the field had suffered some kind of damage. Among those unhappy were seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, who was running near the front when a bump from Bowyer ruined his day. “Sure, it’s plate racing... but that was stupid,” Johnson tweeted after the race. Bowyer, meanwhile, defended his move. “As soon as I got to Jimmie, I pushed him and the whole rear of the car went down and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ and before I know it, he was tank swapping all over the place,” Bowyer said. “I don’t know if that was how they had their cars built or whatever.”

FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP HOPEFULS ARE IN A PRECARIOUS POSITION
W
hile the vast majority of the dozen playoff drivers in Sunday’s race at Talladega were caught up in at least one accident, several of those drivers suffered major setbacks in their quest to advance to the Round of 8. Those who took the hardest hits were Austin Dillon (21 points behind the cutline), Kyle Busch (-21), Clint Bowyer (-37) and Aric Almirola (-48) who all find themselves in a major points hole heading into this weekend’s Round of 12 elimination race on the quirky ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Dillon and Busch need a lot of things to go right at the ROVAL to advance, while Bowyer and Almirola are in virtual must-win situations. “We’re a little too far back in points, but we’ll see what we can do,” Dillon said. “A lot of things can happen. We need those guys in front of us to help us out, and see if we can help ourselves out a little bit, too.”

IT WAS HEARTBREAK HOTEL ALL OVER AGAIN FOR MATT DIBENEDETTO
T
wo weekends ago at Bristol, Matt DiBenedetto was eliminated from the playoffs. Last weekend at Las Vegas, he finished second to Kurt Busch. On Sunday at Talladega, DiBenedetto crossed the finish line in second again — seemingly coming within less than a half car length of his first career win — but was later penalized and scored with a 21st-place finish for forcing William Byron below the double yellow line on the final lap. It was a painful way to end the day for DiBenedetto, who doesn’t know whether he will return to the Wood Brothers’ No. 21 Ford next season. “It’s just a crazy finish,” DiBenedetto said. “I haven’t been able to really process it. I just really want to get this thing in Victory Lane. I feel like this is the same story a lot of times, just heartbreak. My wife and I have had a stressful week again just with the uncertainty — always fighting for my life — but I’m so appreciative of this team.”

TY DILLON DROVE LIKE A MAN WHO NEEDS A JOB
R
ecently informed that he won’t be back in the No. 13 Germain Racing Chevrolet for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series campaign, Ty Dillon had a lot of incentive to get up on the wheel and go for broke on Sunday at Talladega. The Lewisville, North Carolina native did that, finishing a career-best third and undoubtedly making a strong impression on anyone who might need to fill a seat for the upcoming season. “We are all fighting for jobs next year, including myself, so that’s the foot you want to put forward at one of these races winding down,” Dillon said, referring to not only himself but the other members of his team, which is suspending operations at the end of 2020. “It’s been a great run with this team, and, hopefully, we can all work together in the future. To finish third — my personal career-best Cup finish and Germain’s best Cup finish as a team — is something I’m really proud of.”

DENNY HAMLIN PLAYED IT SAFE UNTIL THE END
A
fter spending a good portion of the race running nowhere near the front but staying out of trouble, Denny Hamlin continued his dream season with a last-lap — albeit controversial — pass for the win on Sunday at Talladega. Hamlin, whom NASCAR ruled was forced beyond the double-yellow line in turns 3 and 4 on the final lap, beat Matt DiBenedetto (who was later penalized for forcing a car below the yellow line), Erik Jones, Ty Dillon and William Byron in a photo finish in which the top eight cars appeared to be virtually glued together as they crossed the finish line. It was a wacky conclusion to a wacky day at the high-speed, high-banked 2.66-mile track, but Hamlin had no regrets about his strategy to play it safe for most of the afternoon. “It was certainly uneventful for 490 miles for us,” the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said. “Just things worked out for us. We made the right move at the right time.”

▶ IT’S TIME FOR NASCAR TO ELIMINATE YELLOW-LINE RULE Tired of the yellow-line rule yet? What should have been a clear-cut finish to Sunday’s race at Talladega turned out to be quite controversial and murky thanks to this outdated rule that says a driver will be penalized for going below the double yellow line to advance his position — or if NASCAR deems him to have forced another driver below the yellow line. When Sunday’s race ended, it took NASCAR a couple of minutes to figure who won because it was unclear at first glance whether apparent race winner Denny Hamlin had gone below the yellow line to advance his position or been forced below the yellow. NASCAR ultimately ruled in Hamlin’s favor, but such post-race suspense is unnecessary and really calls NASCAR’s credibility into question. Abandon this antiquated rule — starting today.. 0 1 8

▶ MATT DIBENEDETTO IS NASCAR’S NEW MARK MARTIN Many folks who have been NASCAR fans for more than just a few years will remember the great Mark Martin, a NASCAR Hall of Famer who earned 40 wins over a lengthy career in NASCAR’s premier series but will likely go down in history as the greatest driver to never win a championship after finishing runner-up in the championship standings a record five times. Today, Matt DiBenedetto is NASCAR’s new Mark Martin. While it’s unlikely that DiBenedetto will ever accomplish as much as Martin did in the sport, the sad reality is that he’s becoming known as the driver who just can’t ever quite get over the hump — and, like with Martin, it’s often due to little more than crazy racing luck. 0 2 0

▶ THAT WASN’T REAL RACING If you like big wrecks, then you probably loved the demolition-derby-style showdown at Talladega. But if you like racing, well, what you witnessed on Sunday wasn’t for you. Look, it’s really this simple: There should never be a race where three-fourths of the cars in the field are damaged in accidents. That’s exactly what happened on Sunday, however, and, as a result, several drivers who otherwise would have advanced to the next round of the playoffs are going to see their championship hopes dashed. Forget entertainment. NASCAR needs real racing, especially in the playoffs when so much is at stake for everyone involved. 0 2 2

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he catches up with Isabella Robusto, a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series racer. ▶▶ In your fourth year with Rev Racing and the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Youth Driver Development program, given the challenges and changes from the COVID-19 pandemic, how would you evaluate your racing season, particularly as you’ve graduated to full-time Late Model racing? It’s been an interesting year, but I’m really thankful for the amount of races we’ve gotten to do. I was worried we’d have a really reduced schedule. But so, far we’ve gotten almost all of them in. It’s weird though not having fans in the stands and driver autograph sessions. I always like meeting new fans, but thankfully with social media, I can update fans with my progress. ▶▶ When you consider your racing journey in which you started in a go-kart age five to racing Late Model cars this year at age 15, how much of it feels like a blur in terms of your progress and growth as a racer? Sometimes, it feels like go-karts and Bando races were a lifetime ago. But when I get back in my kart just for seat time, it all comes back so naturally. I definitely remember a lot of detail about key races though. It all really prepared me for a late model, but the Legends car helped the most.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ You made your presence known in the Charlotte Summer Shootouts and Thunder Thursday races at Atlanta, among other tracks, in a Legend car. What were some of your favorite moments in those cars or a memory that stands out to you during those busy times? Definitely Summer Shootout 2019. I went into Race 10 with nine points from the Championship. That was a fun summer. Thursday Thunder had a big autograph session before every race, so that’s where I first experienced that. It was super cool. I had a tie dye Bando and Legends car, so I definitely stood out on track and got a lot of fans. I remember traveling to so many different tracks in my kart, from Miami to Massachusetts and so many places in between. It was always fun going to new places. I miss Concord Motor Speedway. That’s where I learned to race my Bando and Legends car. I got my last Bando win there before moving into the Legends car during Summer Shootout. 0 2 6
▶▶ You’re teammates with up and coming racers like Rajah Caruth and Perry Patino in the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series. What’s some of the things you’ve learned from Rajah and Perry with Late Model, short track racing and how often do all three of you collaborate with each other to deliver wins and strong results for Rev Racing? It’s been fun hanging out with the team at the shop. That’s when we have more time to download about the week’s race. But we definitely compare notes after practices and before races. It’s been cool getting to know everyone.

▶▶ Growing up in Fort Mill, SC, who were some of your favorite racers that inspired you with your racing career? I always admired Danica Patrick because she was the first girl I saw racing. But I’ve always been a big fan of Jimmie Johnson because of everything he’s been able to accomplish. He’s also a multi-sport athlete, and I really like that. I did a spartan race a few years ago that he sponsored in my hometown, so I became an even bigger fan. Lewis Hamilton is amazing. I love to watch him race. ▶▶ As a young racer who’s working her way up the NASCAR ladder, how encouraged are you to see the sport strengthen its diversity efforts and embrace a more inclusive environment for everyone with a passion for racing? It’s a really exciting time in our sport. I’m really thankful for Rev Racing and the NASCAR Diversity program, but the focus from all of NASCAR on diversity this year is so exciting. It really feels like things are shifting in the right direction for the sport. I’m excited for the expanded opportunities ahead. 0 2 8
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
▶▶ You recently became a member of the National Beta Club for your excellence in academics and character. During normal times, it had to be a challenge to balance school and racing. However, during these times, how have you balanced the worlds of school, whether you’re in the actual classroom or a virtual one, with your racing efforts? Thankfully, my principal and teachers work with my unusual schedule. They understand this opportunity and have been very flexible. But I’ve been able to maintain all A’s, so that helps too. It definitely is a challenge getting it all done sometimes. I really enjoy school, and being a full-time student allows me to participate in school sports as well as racing. I definitely want to go to college, so I know working hard now is important. But I don’t mind staying up late to finish school work when it means I get to spend the day at the race shop or race track.

IN THE HOT SEAT ▶▶ Let’s imagine that a new race fan happened to catch your Late Model Race at the track or followed Rev Racing’s social media accounts. Give three reasons why a new race fan ought to root for you. Because I care about my fans. I know they could choose anyone to follow, but if they choose me, that’s a big deal to me. I try to stay positive all the time. I think fans appreciate that I don’t do controversy and negativity. There’s too much of that already in our world. I also really appreciate the opportunities I have in racing; especially being a girl in this sport, so I’m never going to take it for granted. I think I stay pretty humbled, so hopefully fans appreciate that. ▶▶ If you could assemble a dream team of drivers from NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula One, and other racing series around the world, past or present, what three drivers would you choose to be your teammates aside from your current ones with Rev Racing? Wow, that’s a tough one. But I’d have to say Dale Earnhardt, Lewis Hamilton, and Brittany Force. 0 3 0
▶▶ While it may be difficult to predict far ahead in the future, ideally, how would you envision your future in the next five years in NASCAR? I hope I get another year in late models with Rev Racing to build on what I’ve learned this year. Then I’d love to race in ARCA and then Trucks. I want to be the best I can be at each level before moving to the next regardless of how long that takes. But my ultimate goal is to race on Sundays in the Cup Series!

BURNS’ NOTICE
BAYNE BREWS UP A TALLADEGA THRILLER BY A A RON BURNS
T
revor Bayne hasn’t had a full-time NASCAR ride since 2017. He’s spent the last year and a half running a coffee shop in his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. Still, the driver-turned-barista had a major upset brewing on Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. In only his fourth start of the year, Bayne dueled alongside Raphael Lessard on a frantic final lap of the Chevrolet Silverado 250. A crash on the backstretch, however, kept Bayne from making a charge to the finish line. The yellow flag froze the field and left Bayne’s Niece Motorsports Chevrolet a nose

behind Lessard’s Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota when the smoke cleared and the results were finalized. Despite coming painfully close to winning his first NASCAR race since an Xfinity Series triumph in June of 2013, Bayne took the result in stride. “We were glad to be leading down the backstretch,” Bayne said. “It looks like we lost by six thousandths of a second. … I never want to be the guy who

BURNS’ NOTICE finishes second and is mad about it.” Few expected Bayne to be in the hunt when the green flag dropped on Saturday. If anyone’s an expert in surprising people, though, it’s Bayne. He lost his NASCAR Xfinity Series ride with Michael Waltrip Racing in 2010, caught on with Roush Fenway Racing and landed a part-time gig piloting the Wood Brothers’ NASCAR Cup Series entry. One day after turning 20 and in only his second Cup Series start, Bayne shocked the world when he won the Daytona 500 in February of 2011. The kid who grew up a Jeff Gordon fan was considered by some to be the next Jeff Gordon. While Bayne’s star hasn’t shone nearly as bright as Gordon’s in the nine years since his Daytona triumph, Bayne showed on Saturday that running a coffee shop hasn’t washed away his driving skill. Bayne did what he needed to do as the laps clicked off: stay in touch with the leaders, avoid the big wrecks and take advantage of the draft. Not bad 0 3 4
for a guy who, despite having made 342 starts across NASCAR’s top three series, had never raced a truck at Daytona or Talladega before Saturday. “I had a learning curve on how to side-draft, how to move around and which lane carried the momentum,” Bayne said. “It’s similar to a Cup car but it’s a little bit different.” When Bayne won at Daytona in 2011, his plan was to spend the next 10-15 years in the Cup Series competing for championships. After losing his ride and resorting to Plan B – Mahalo Coffee Roasters – Bayne is back in NASCAR. Fittingly, he’s sponsored by Plan B Sales. “Five or six weeks ago, I thought I may never run another NASCAR race,” Bayne said. “To have a shot to come here and win ... it’s been a lot of fun. I’m really thankful to be back.”

DENNY HAMLIN REAFFIRMS CHAMPIONSHIP BID WITH TALLADEGA WIN BY ROB TIONGSON
I
f anyone needs the 411 on Denny Hamlin’s championship chances in 2020, look no further than his seventh win in a wild and crazy YellaWood 500 at Talladega. Without a doubt, Hamlin, intent on erasing his shaky Round of 16 performances, can safely say “mission accomplished” with his sterling Round of 12 results. Sure, he walked away empty handed after dominating at Las Vegas last Sunday night. However, he concluded this year’s superspeedway races just as he did earlier this year in the Daytona 500 – driving into Victory Lane. Batting .500 speaks volumes for Hamlin and his No. 11 FedEx Toyota team in these crapshoot races. After all, there’s virtually no safe place to avoid danger at Daytona and Talladega as “The Big One” can happen at any moment regardless of track position. 0 4 4

Moreover, Hamlin timed his winning pass correctly, even if it came with some scrutiny and a bit of cloudiness with what transpired on the last lap in Turn 4. “It makes me feel better, for sure,” Hamlin said. “The marquee one was the Brickyard 400. I hate we didn’t get it. Yeah, we got one of the probably two that we should have had. I don’t know. Probably should have more than that. “Vegas obviously was disappointing. We dominated last week. I think we finished third. Certainly, yeah, it makes me feel a little better. The odds are starting to even out a little bit. Definitely happy about that, especially considering where we were with two laps to go.” Prior to the final lap, Hamlin showcased some muscle by leading for 25 laps on three different occasions. Although he didn’t score stage points prior to the final leg of this 200-lap, extended race, he avoided the carnage and mayhem that
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
knocked out 13 of the 39 drivers. Somehow keeping his unmistakable ride in pristine shape all race long, Hamlin decided he wasn’t going to points race his way to a safe, top-10 finish. Instead, he was going for the win to nab additional Playoff points. Running sixth on the final lap, the superspeedway master worked Talladega like a circus ringmaster, weaving his way through the backstretch to the fifth spot heading into Turns 3 and 4. While Matt DiBenedetto seemed like he was closing in on his much anticipated first NASCAR Cup Series win, Hamlin had other plans. Shifting to a defensive strategy, DiBenedetto tried to stave off the fast challenges of Chris Buescher, William Byron, and Erik Jones. As DiBenedetto tried his darndest to hold off Byron from a sneaky, inside pass in Turn 4, Hamlin passed Buescher and ducked beneath Byron and DiBenedetto, dipping below the yellow line in efforts to avoid potential calamity.

ROB IS RACIN’ “I don’t know,” Hamlin said. “I mean, I can tell you in that particular instance (that) I was not thinking about whether they called that before, I can go down there. I was flat out avoiding a wreck. They went up, hit the fence, come back down the racetrack. I already got an inside position.” Scooting past both drivers to take the lead, it was a frantic run to the stripe that looked a bit like “capture the flag” or contestants trying to conquer the famed Agro Crag in Nickelodeon’s Guts. On this day, Hamlin’s bold and risky move netted him another victory, somewhat soothing the pains of the Round of 16. All told, Hamlin was not going to have any of the fans or press’ concerns or interpretation of the final lap happenings in Turn 4. “Called it all day,” Hamlin observed. “It’s a non-story. I’ve been a victim of getting forced down there all the time. Finally, they put their foot down and said, ‘This is the rule, we’re going to enforce it.’ You can’t as a 0 4 8
leader, wherever you are, use the yellow line as a defense. You have to play within the boundaries that they set. In the NFL, they had force-out rules, things like that. They got rid of it. It’s the same kind of thing. They set the precedence early so you know you weren’t going to get away with it. It’s part of it. I wouldn’t say I would have done anything different if I was Matt. I don’t know. I’m not a huge blocking guy. I don’t always think you have to block to win.” In Hamlin’s case, the Virginian doesn’t have to apologize for his win, how he won, and the fact that he continued the “Harvick and Hamlin Show of 2020.” Like his close friend and NBA legend Michael Jordan, Hamlin has a “killer instinct” and focuses on winning at all costs. “These wins are great,” he remarked. “Obviously, this is icing on the cake for us. But we try to win each and every week. Obviously getting to Phoenix, that’s kind of what

ROB IS RACIN’
dictates a good year, a successful year versus a non-successful year for us. It’s not necessarily winning the championship, because anything can happen in one race. If you get there, that means you had a really good season. “Obviously, we had a really good season so far. To me, my focus won’t shift to the Round of 8. I’m still going to put in the same amount of work this week getting ready for the ROVAL as I would if I wasn’t locked in. But certainly, the stress level will be less. Certainly, we can be a little bit more aggressive with our strategy calls starting at the beginning of the race.” Easily quelling and dispelling any notion by some that he may flinch in his latest championship run, Hamlin’s looked more like John Elway in 1997 and ’98 by being laser focused on taking each week one at a time before pondering about the championship. 0 5 0
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 5, 2020
In Elway’s case, the famed Denver Broncos quarterback finally scored his first Super Bowl wins, important victories that greatly validated and affirmed his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as an NFL legend. Similarly, Hamlin’s making a compelling case that his already marvelous Cup career is getting legitimately closer towards the chocolate chip of a delicious cookie. Making his late Sunday afternoon victory even sweeter was who he tied on the all-time wins list. “The 11 car, I’ve been No. 11 my whole life,” Hamlin said. “A lot of it is when I got into go-kart racing when I was a kid, Bill Elliott was running the Junior Johnson No. 11. I’ve always been No. 11, purple and white 11. Crazy it all worked out that way. Tying a guy that I considered the best, a guy I idolized, it’s very surreal for me.” If Hamlin can capitalize on his incredible season with a championship at Phoenix, it’s safe to say that this year and possibility will be even more surreal for a man who pulled off quite the incredible win at Talladega.

artin Truex Jr. claimed the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series championship and recorded 17 of his 27 Cup Series victories in cars carrying No. 78. The Mayetta, New Jersey, native enjoyed that success during his five seasons driving the No. 78 car owned by businessman Barney Visser. Visser’s Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing team fielded the No. 78 car in NASCAR’s premier division from 2005 through the end of the 2018 season.

Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 78 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane 22 times while recording 172 top-10 finishes in 675 starts. A total of 64 drivers have wheeled car No. 78 in at least one race. Bob Moore, of Kent, Ohio, was the first driver to use No. 78 when he carried the number on his 1950 Oldsmobile en route to a 26th-place finish in the Aug. 20, 1950, race at Dayton Speedway in his home state. Dick Passwater, driving an Oldsmobile owned by Frank Arford, became the first driver to win in car No. 78 when he topped the April 5, 1953, Cup Series event at the three-quarter-mile Charlotte Speedway dirt track. Truex also has the most starts (180) in car No. 78, while Jim Paschal (3) and Regan Smith (1) are the other drivers to visit Victory Lane with the number. This season, B.J. McLeod Motorsports is using No. 78.
