ERIC’S 2020 HALL OF FAME PICKS In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through the recently announced nominees for the 2020 NASCAR Hall of Fame. This is the first year with an abbreviated ballot of only 3 drivers, after years of 5 inductees (to make up for lost time before the founding). With a tighter race, who will make the cut? For the modern era nominees, several big 0 0 4

names will jump out, like Jeff Burton, Ricky Rudd, and of course, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. But Eric takes us through the twists and turns of the list, analyzing dark horses like Carl Edwards. Eric also takes us through the pioneer ballot as well, featuring classic VIP names like Banjo Matthews and Red Farmer. So where does Eric land on his picks? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

BEST DRIVERS TO NEVER WIN A TITLE NASCAR has had a lot of incredible drivers over the sport’s 70-plus year history. Not altogether surprising is the fact that several of the best drivers to ever wheel a stock car have never won a premier series championship. While the reasons for this vary depending on circumstances, this much is certain: While winning a championship is certainly a mark of greatness, it’s possible for a driver to be great and never ascend NASCAR’s highest mountain. Following are the five best drivers to never win a title in NASCAR’s premier series. BY JA RED TURNER

CARL EDWARDS

N

icknamed “Cousin Carl,” Carl Edwards wasted little making his presence felt in NASCAR’s No. 1 division. Appointed to drive Roush Fenway Racing’s No. 99 Ford for the final 13 races of the 2004 season, Edwards turned that cameo opportunity into a full-time ride with the company the following year and quickly made it obvious to everyone that he would be a force for years to come. From 2005 through his surprising retirement at the end of the 2016, Edwards amassed a total of 28 victories — the last five of them coming with Joe Gibbs Racing, where he spent his last two seasons after leaving RFR at the end of 2014. No driver will ever come closer to winning a championship — and not win one — than Edwards, who finished the 2011 season locked in a mathematical tie with Tony Stewart but lost the title to Stewart on the basis of a tiebreaker, which was Stewart’s five victories that season compared to Edwards’ one victory.

DAVEY ALLISON

H

ad Davey Allison’s career not been cut short by a fatal helicopter crash in July 1993, the Hueytown, Alabama native likely would have gone on to win multiple championships in NASCAR’s premier series. From his rookie season of 1987 up until his death, the son of NASCAR legend Bobby Alison went to Victory Lane a total of 19 times that included a win in the 1992 Daytona 500. Davey, who passed away at the young age of 32, finished a career-best third in the standings in both 1991 and 1992, falling just short of the championship in the latter season, when he entered the final race as the points leader but saw his title hopes evaporate when he was caught up in a laterace accident with Ernie Irvan. Of all the great drivers who never won a championship in NASCAR’s top division, Allison is the one that it’s the most tempting to wonder about what might have been.

DENNY HAMLIN

O

f the drivers competing in today’s NASCAR Cup Series, no one is more desperate for a championship or more deserving of a championship than Denny Hamlin. The driver of the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing finished as the championship runner-up to Jimmie Johnson in 2010 after entering the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway as the points leader, only to stumble in the final event and allow Johnson to claim NASCAR’s biggest prize for a fifth consecutive season. Hamlin came close again in 2014 — the year of the first ever Championship 4 — when he led on a restart with seven laps to go at Homestead, only to fade to a seventh-place finish and end up third in the final standings. Hamlin, who owns 38 wins in NASCAR’s top division, suffered his most recent disappointment last season, when he once again arrived at Homestead as part of the Championship 4 but finished last among the four title contenders.

MARK MARTIN

N

o driver has experienced more championship heartache than Mark Martin, who finished runner-up in the standings a record five times over a lengthy and wildly successful driving career that stretched from 1981 through 2013. Martin, who spent most of his career with Roush Fenway Racing but also drove for Hendrick Motorsports among other organizations, captured 40 premier series events. His most devastating championship loss came in 1990 when he led the standings for half of the season but ultimately finished second to Dale Earnhardt. The difference between Earnhardt and Martin was 26 points, which is notable because Martin’s team was hit with a controversial 46-point penalty that season for an illegible but non-performance enhancing carburetor spacer discovered on his No. 6 car after an event at Richmond Raceway. Martin, a longtime fan-favorite and one of the most well-known people to ever hail from Batesville, Arkansas, was enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2017.

JUNIOR JOHNSON

A

part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s first five-member class enshrined in 2010, Junior Johnson recorded 50 wins and 46 poles over a relatively short driving career that consisted of only 313 starts in NASCAR’s premier division. Johnson later went on to become a successful team owner, winning three championships apiece with NASCAR legends and fellow future Hall of Famers Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. Named in 1998 as one of NASCAR’s “50 Greatest Drivers,” Johnson hailed from the small town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. His best ever points finish came in 1955 and 1961, when he ranked sixth in the standings despite not running nine and 11 of the races, respectively, in the two seasons. Johnson won the Daytona 500 in 1960 in what turned out to be his only victory in The Great American Race. The NASCAR world mourned Johnson’s passing on December 20, 2019 at the age of 88.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson got a push from Dale Earnhardt Jr. in his win at Talladega in 2011.

A LITTLE HELP FROM A FRIEND JOHNSON’S 2011 TALLADEGA WIN CAME ON ASSIST FROM DALE JR. BY JA RED TURNER

M

ost of Jimmie Johnson’s 83 career NASCAR Cup Series victories have come without an assist from a teammate. A notable exception to this occurred on April 17, 2011 at Talladega Superspeedway when Johnson won the Aaron’s 499 in simply dramatic fashion. With eight drivers paired up in twos and batting for the win on the final lap, Johnson got a huge push from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. to nip Clint Bowyer at the finish line by a scant .002 seconds. Johnson and Earnhardt, whose cars at the time were built in the same shop on the Hendrick Motorsports campus, enjoyed a unique exchange just moments after Johnson scored his 54th career victory, first of the 2011 season and second victory at Talladega. In a nice gesture for Earnhardt’s drafting help on the final lap, Johnson pulled alongside Earnhardt’s car on the cooldown lap and handed him the checkered flag, which Earnhardt initially refused. “He said, ‘Man, I don’t want that,’” Johnson recalled during his

0 1 8

post-race press conference. “I said, ‘Well, I have to give you something for the push and working with me.’ He said, ‘No, that’s what teammates do.’ “I smiled and I said, ‘Take the damn flag. I’ll give you the trophy, too.’ He says, ‘No, I don’t want the trophy. I’ll take the flag, though.’” Johnson and Earnhardt were running fifth and sixth, respectively, entering the trioval on the final lap before Johnson made a daring move to the inside with Earnhardt glued to his back bumper. The cars they passed coming to the checkered flag were Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon. “As we started rolling up on them, I shot down to the bottom, and we were able to surge by out of the trioval coming out of the bottom because they kind of left it open there,” Johnson said. “It just worked out.”

Throughout the NASCAR season, Rob Tiongson will interview various drivers in NASCAR. This week, he talks with two-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner Ricky Craven. ▶  RECENTLY, FOX SPORTS 1 RE-AIRED THE 2003 CAROLINA DODGE DEALERS 400 AT DARLINGTON RACEWAY, A RACE THAT HAD TO BE THE MOST MEMORABLE OF YOUR NASCAR CUP SERIES CAREER. I’VE GOT TO ASK, HOW QUIET OR CHATTY WERE YOU AND THE TEAM ON THE RADIO AS YOU CLOSED IN ON THE FINAL LAPS? “Scott Miller, my crew chief, was giving me intervals in the final 20 laps. I was knocking four-tenths a lap from the gap between Kurt Busch, the leader, and myself.” ▶  THAT HAD TO BE INTENSE TO HEAR THE INTERVALS AND KNOWING HOW FAST YOUR CAR WAS WITH CLOSING THAT GAP. HOW’D YOU KEEP CALM KNOWING YOU HAD KURT BUSCH IN FRONT OF YOU AND A HARDCHARGING DAVE BLANEY BEHIND YOU? “I did not lay it on the line until roughly 40 laps to go. I was so angry with myself for wrecking while battling for the lead on Lap 37 in the 2002 race. I swore I’d never make that mistake again. So, for about 80 percent of the race, I watched drivers take themselves out one by one.” ▶  SEEMS LIKE DARLINGTON ABSOLUTELY BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN PEOPLE. YOU’VE HAD YOUR SHARE OF NASCAR SUCCESSES IN THE TOP THREE SERIES. BUT 17 YEARS LATER, HOW SPECIAL IS IT THAT THE DARLINGTON WIN REMAINS YOUR HALLMARK MOMENT DURING A YEAR AND TIME WHEN NASCAR WAS GROWING IN POPULARITY? “The finish of the race has survived the test of time. I didn’t truly understand that until I hung up my helmet a few years later. At the time, I was so proud of winning at the toughest track on the circuit.”

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBER’S CLUB Q&A

WHITLOCK’S ONMC AFFILIATION CONTINUES TO BEAR GIFTS BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

Steven Whitlock is an original member of the Official NASCAR Member’s Club, having joined in 2005. Soon after, the Pittsburgh, Pa., resident became the president of his local ONMC chapter. Whitlock’s local chapter has long been one of the most active and populated of any in the nation. He became one of the club’s six national advisers in 2006. The longtime racing fan recently joined ROAR for a Q&A. ▶  WHEN DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN RACING? “I didn’t grow up following NASCAR. It wasn’t until 1996 or 1997. A neighbor grew up as a fan of Bobby Labonte, and I started following racing so I could talk to her about it.” ▶  WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE ONMC BEEN LIKE? “I became a member when it was formed because they offered contests. I signed up to become the local chapter president soon after that. I started recruiting people to become members of the club. We ended up building the largest chapter in the club with 125 members. “They developed a competition between me and a guy in West Virginia. I won that contest by developing programming that they liked. I was the first person to create a local headquarters for fans with a Hooters restaurant. That caught on, and the club developed a local headquarters program.” ▶  WHAT HAPPENS AT THE LOCAL HEADQUARTERS? “I used to bring local drivers out to the restaurant. Fans had the opportunity to race drivers on an XBox. I was the first to pen an agreement between NASCAR and Nationwide. I signed up my local agent, and he offered club members discounts on insurance.” 0 2 2

■■ Steven Whitlock stores all of the memorabilia he’s accumulated through his membership in ONMC in his garage.

▶  WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING A MEMBER? “I’ve had opportunities that an average race fan just can’t get. I’ve met drivers on a national level. I’ve been given a national leadership award through the club. I was able to go to oval track day at the state capitol. I was able to represent the club and NASCAR with representatives from local government.” JOIN THE OFFICIAL

or the past week, NASCAR fans wondered which Cup Series or XFINTY Series racer would reign supreme at short tracks – in a virtual fashion. With 18 of stock car’s best short track aces competing in six-car fields in a pair of races at digital versions of Rockingham Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway, Myrtle Beach Speedway, surely, it’d pique the interest of NASCAR fans with the recent surge of sim racing action. Indeed, the NBC eSports Short Track Challenge delivered intensity, hilarity, and amazing competition across some of NASCAR’s most beloved short tracks from its storied history. Certainly, drivers were offered generous opportunities to make the 10-car championship race at Martinsville on Thursday evening.

ESPORTS Beyond earning an automatic ticket into the title fight with a race win, NASCAR on NBC analyst Steve Letarte issued “Peacock Provisionals” to racers who he deemed as consistent or deserving of a spot in the final showdown. By far, Letarte’s second chance came into play with Monday’s opener at Rockingham. Essentially, competitors and fans were treated to “The William Byron Show,” as the third-year Cup racer dominated Race 1 while using the chrome horn on Parker Kligerman to claim Race 2. While Byron made

0 2 6

like Jeff Gordon at “The Rock,” Letarte granted a “Peacock Provisional” to Kyle Busch. Tuesday’s harbingers at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis kicked off with Kyle Larson staving off a hard charging Chase Briscoe for the Race 1 victory. However, Race 2 wasn’t quite a runaway as Christopher Bell managed to stave off Denny Hamlin in a finish that resembled the 1995 Bristol Night Race. Although Hamlin was just a position short of a Race 2 win, he was the recipient of Letarte’s “Peacock Provisional.” The penultimate evening of the NBC eSports Track Challenge saw some frantic action at Myrtle Beach. While Ryan Preece eased his way into Victory Lane in Race 1, it was all about tire management in Race 2. Although Myatt Snider started first, he dropped to the back of the pack in efforts to save his tires. However, this strategy backfired as Landon Cassill took the lead and never looked back for the Race 2 victory. With seven of the 10 spots occupied for Thursday night’s event, Letarte awarded the final “golden tickets” to Martinsville to Chase Briscoe, Parker Kligerman, and Dale Earnahrdt Jr. As the green flag waved for the 90-lap championship deciding race at Martinsville, Byron found himself in a familiar position as the race leader. Leading for a majority of the first half of the race, Byron was accompanied by second place Kligerman before a caution

ESPORTS just around the halfway point. Hilariously, Byron and Kligerman were issued a competition penalty for being “too good” at iRacing, essentially sending them to the back of the field. While Byron and Kligerman picked their way to the front, Chase Briscoe took advantage of his newfound race lead. Like Wednesday night’s race at Myrtle Beach, tire management was the name of the game. Although Briscoe kept cool and composed in the lead, he had to be like Buddy Baker by having one eye in the mirror and the other looking towards the front of his windshield. Picking his way through some of the slower, lapped cars, Briscoe saw the sight of Byron’s No. 24 car growing larger on his rearview mirror in the closing stages of the race. One could say Briscoe was presented with a gift with the competition penalty assessed to Byron. However, much like a gift from the holiday season, Briscoe had to sweat it out like a parent fighting to get the best Power Ranger action figure. 0 2 8

Leaning on his experience as a short track and sprint car stalwart, Briscoe held off Byron to win the NBC eSports Short Track Challenge. “That was a kind a gift with the invert deal with William,” Briscoe said. “It was fun. I was trying to save the right rear tires and acted like I had an egg under the gas pedal, and I couldn’t break it, and obviously it helped.” Despite finishing second, Byron managed to smile during his post-race interview. “Chase did a good job keeping it out front,” Byron said. “I was just hoping he’d have some big slide so I could capitalize. But every time he would slide, I’d rush the gas and slide too. He did a good job holding me off.” Finishing behind Briscoe and Byron were Bell, Earnhardt Jr, Kligerman, Busch, Cassill, Preece, Hamlin, and Larson. Ultimately, while Briscoe earned a miniature version of the famed grandfather clock, drivers and fans proved to be the true winners of this week long competition. After all, real or virtual, NASCAR racing at short tracks is about as good as it gets.

ouston Stamper, tire changer for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Denny Hamlin, saw his first NASCAR race at Charlotte Motor Speedway during an All-Star race weekend in the early 1990s. He also attended races at North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., all before his sixth birthday. No surprise there was interest, as Stamper grew up with family ties to NASCAR that has spanned for three generations. “My grandfather is from Concord, N.C., and built his own race cars,” Stamper said. “He raced all the local tracks with Ralph Earnhardt. His sons took to it and my Mom also followed her Dad around so it was a family thing. My older brother Phillip joined (former crew chief and team owner) Robbie Resier in Xfinity (then Busch) Series competition with driver Matt Kenseth. Another brother, Greg, also joined Roush-Fenway Racing as a crew member.” The close RFR affiliation gave Stamper the opportunity to work there as a body fabricator in 2006. Feeling great loyalty to the organization, he remained for 10 seasons until Mike Lepp, JGR’s Athletic Director, offered him a position in 2017. “I’ve been working with tires since 2006 and somehow or another, the sport is always changing,” Stamper said. “You always have to evolve. You get about three years into it and get really comfortable, and then changes come. There are always rules that you have to adapt to.” Stamper feels a great sense of accomplishment when wins or strong finishes are enjoyed on race day by driver and crew. “When we do our job, whether it’s gaining five spots on pit road or one spot, the best feeling in the world is to win a race,” Stamper said.

lated and entertained while at home, NASCAR says its youth platform is an option for both learning and fun. “Our fans are an extension of our NASCAR family and right now we know that a lot of parents are looking for materials, resources, content – anything they can get their hands on to ensure their children are entertained, but also continuing to learn,” said Gotay. “We’re a fun sport, so we wanted to ensure a balance between the teaching components and games and activities on the web site. Kids can work through lessons on kinetic and potential energy, for example, and then design and drive their own race car online.” The STEM learning materials, available for download via Accelerationnation.com, are designed for fifth, sixth and seventh grade students and divided into two primary buckets: aerodynamics and energy. Each includes individual lessons and before-and-after knowledge assessment tests. Diane Spiga is an elementary and middle school teacher for the St. Marys Area School District in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, and has featured the supplemental NASCAR materials as part of her classroom instruction for several years. According to Spiga, the materials continue to engage her students by also incorporating art and design, or STEAM. “This program as a whole has all the components for 21st century skills and embeds all areas of STEAM into the activities as well,” said Spiga.

unior Johnson was known as one of NASCAR’s greatest stars as a driver and also a team owner. Aside from his talent behind the wheel, fans held a tremendous curiosity about his quests of making and selling illegal moonshine in the mountains near Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Because of those late-night moonlit exploits, he displayed an incredible ability to wheel-race cars on any type of short track, road course or superspeedway on NASCAR’s schedule. The middle child of seven youngsters often told of the time federal agents raided the family home in 1935 when he was only 4 years of age. They removed thousands of gallons of illegal moonshine and offered Junior his first true feeling of speed. In order to get numerous pints down from upstairs bedrooms, planks were placed on the steps to send the boxes down to the bottom. Junior and younger brother Fred would ride them down the planks, giggling all the way before federal agents shooed them away. His father, Robert Glenn Johnson Sr., was in and out of prison throughout Junior’s formative years, incarcerated for the same

trade that gained Junior stock car fame. As part of learning the family’s necessary livelihood, he had to master the toughest mountain curves to keep from being caught himself. When Johnson needed new parts, he would run moonshine to pay the bills and keep his early racecars going. In 1955, he logged five wins in his first full season of racing in NASCAR but was also arrested that summer for having an illegal still. He served 11 months in prison in Chillicothe, Ohio, from 1956-1957 but was pardoned 30 years later on December 26, 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. Johnson returned to driving in 1957 and ended his career in 1966 in what is known today as NASCAR’s Cup Series. He won 50 races as a driver, including the 1960 Daytona 500 after discovering the art of superspeedway drafting in a car fielded by ace engine builder Ray Fox. After his final NASCAR start at Rockingham, N.C., on Oct. 30, 1966, Johnson turned his cars over to such greats as Fred Lorenzen, Lee Roy Yarbrough, Charlie Glotzbach, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip and Terry Labonte, to name only a few. period with Yarborough and Waltrip collecting three Cup series championships each for Johnson in 1976, ’77 and ’78 and 1981, ’82 and ’85, respectively. Johnson was among the inaugural inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010 alongside Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr., and is known as one of the sport’s most respected icons. Sadly, Johnson passed away on Dec. 20, 2019, at the age of 88 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. “Junior Johnson truly was the ‘Last American Hero,’” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France. “From his early days running moonshine through the end of his life, Junior wholly embodied the NASCAR spirit….”

he interruption to the 2020 NASCAR season as our country and the world manages the COVID-19 pandemic has been understandably disappointing and disconcerting for racers, fans, teams and the industry as a whole. But instead of completely retreating during this time of general uncertainty, NASCAR and the racing industry at large have instead responded immediately with exactly the kind of huge pickme-up that is making a legitimate life-saving difference. The NASCAR Research & Development Center, located outside Charlotte, has turned its high-tech capabilities into real life medical assistance – manufacturing face shields with its 3D printers and even a prototype human head that Wake Forest doctors and scientists are using to research better treatment supply options. CORE Autosport, a team in IMSA’s WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, is similarly committed to helping out. Its team shop is manufacturing thousands

of facemasks for distribution across the country. Technique Inc., a Michigan-based company that normally supplies chassis components to NASCAR teams has similarly turned its efforts during this pause in racing to making face shields for medical distribution and has ramped up production to 20,000 shields per day. Roush Fenway Racing has developed a special prototype “transport box” that helps provide a safe, workable barrier between a COVID-19 patient and the many medical personnel treating them in hospital rooms and transporting them on hospital floors. When it comes to innovation, rapid response and answering the call, the sport of NASCAR is all in. “I think NASCAR is in a unique position across the industry and especially at the Cup level where you have some of the best fabricators and engineers in the world and we have all this capability to make all these parts for cars, parts for testing so you have a high talent pool and then you have the machinery and the people needed to kinda do all this now,” said Eric Jacuzzi, senior director of aerodynamics at the NASCAR R&D Center. “That’s what really puts us in a

unique spot to be able to help out.” Unlike any other major sports, the very essence of NASCAR racing involves cutting edge technology conducted – literally – by rocket scientists, engineers and tech geniuses who would normally be putting their minds around new racing innovations. Instead of making cars go faster, they are now helping a nation try to manage a historic global medical pandemic. “Sitting at home for a day or two is great, but I think most people are starting to look at what they can do,” Jacuzzi said. “And the crew we have here working on this stuff is all volunteer. People are volunteering to come here at nine o’clock at night and stay until midnight – all different types of departments. It helps having people do that and even people are taking some parts home and having their teenage children help with cutting things out. So it’s even giving students at home right now the opportunity to contribute.” “We’re used to working hard and being on the go all the time so it’s a big adjustment for us to kind of have this pause. But this is helping us keep going and really just from an education side, more people are learning about how to run these machines and all that so it’s good for everyone to feel like they are

NASCAR INDUSTRY contributing and helping out and they certainly are.” At the NASCAR R&D Center, Jacuzzi said the idea to mass produce the face shields came from a random homeowners association post on a Facebook page. It was a similarly random connection for Roush Fenway Racing, according to the Roush team’s Operations Director, Tommy Wheeler. Dr. Brian Talenk, the brother-in-law of Roush’s Simulation Director Marcus Marty, reached out to see if Roush operation had the capability to help both conceptualize and manufacture a device that would provide another line of defense for the medical professionals treating virus patients. “I said, ‘yes, of course we can. Let’s do this now,’ Wheeler recalled. “That was around lunchtime [last Thursday] so we mobilized here so we could make some prototypes, which we did that afternoon and got them delivered to Brian [Dr. Talenk] to see if they worked. “What ensued from there was a round of tweaks and things that the doctors and such 0 4 2

wanted. He started sending pictures ■■ Roush Fenway Racing has delivered 58 prototypes of face shields to and discussing with his network of hospitals in the Southeast. physicians and anesthesiologists around the greater Charlotte area. We then did approximately three more prototypes and by Friday – a day later which I’m pretty proud of – we were online with what we call our Version 2 Box. “They were impressed by that (timing).” Since then, Roush Fenway Racing has delivered 58 units to hospitals from Wake Forest to Miami. Wheeler describes the devices as something similar to a “sneeze guard” at a salad bar. The clear guard is placed over the patient in bed – covering their upper body from head to about chest level. There are two holes that allow physicians and nurses access, but the protection helps prevent the kind of immediate exposure that has spread the virus. “When they are intubating people, it can be a messy and highrisk environment, because there’s coughing, there’s fluid, it can become an aerosol,” Wheeler said. “That’s why they’re called aerosol boxes because there’s pressurized air effectively spewing small droplets into the atmosphere. Imagine you’re in critical care in the ICU or something. What was happening was you’d have two or three healthcare professionals standing around the patient as this [incubating] occurs and wipes out all their personal protection equipment that as we know is already in short supply right now.

NASCAR INDUSTRY “What this does is contains it, so now it moves their [health care workers] outer garments from being the first line of defense to now a secondary or third line of defense. It means we’re wiping out less face masks, less goggles, and effectively, the only thing exposed to the threat is their gloves and sleeves.” Telling is that all these organizations – plus many more in the auto racing industry – were immediately willing to offer their help. In many cases, teams turned their facilities into impromptu manufacturing hubs, absorbing the costs themselves in the name of providing a greater good. CORE Autosport, whose Porsches finished second and third in the GT Class of IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Series Rolex 24 at Daytona 2020 season-opener, is making thousands of face masks daily to help the supply, improving the product as they go. “We got this idea, when [team owner] Jon [Bennett] was just sitting at home watching the news like all of us and seeing this national face mask shortage and we looked at each other and thought there was something we had to do to help and very quickly came up with this concept and idea for producing face masks,” CORE Autosport Team Manager Morgan Brady. “As the word has gotten out about these face masks the demand

has been increasing every day and we will continue to produce these face masks as long as there is a need in this country,” Brady added. It’s a common and assuring theme for so many in the racing industry – all willing to be all in. “I am very proud of our guys and what we’ve been able to do for our community,” Roush’s Wheeler said. “This is a great example because the thing that makes NASCAR and Roush Fenway employees unique compared to the real world is that we have very highly skilled craftsman and fabricators and engineers. What really makes it unique is our ‘whatever it takes” attitude and our time to market expectation far exceeds what the real world is accustomed to. That’s what allows us to go from concept to production to release in less than 36 hours. “This was my rallying speech to my staff working on this project. No one else can do this in this amount of time except us. And we’re going to. We’re glad and proud to be asked to do it. “What can we do? Here’s something we can do, so let’s do it and help everyone.”

ASCAR pioneer Lee Petty used the No. 42 throughout much of his Hall of Fame career, recording 53 of his 54 NASCAR Cup Series victories and three series championships in cars carrying that number. The patriarch of the Petty racing family first used No. 42 during the third series race on Aug. 7, 1949, at Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsborough, North Carolina. He ended up making 414 of his 427 series appearances in car No. 42.

In addition, Petty’s sons, Richard (28 starts and 2 wins) and Maurice (11 starts), also used the number on occasion during their driving careers, and his grandson, Kyle, won six times during 286 starts with the number. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 42 in the NASCAR Cup Series have recorded 75 victories with 703 top-10 finishes in 1,580 starts. Businessman Felix Sabates debuted as a team owner in 1989 with Kyle Petty driving the team’s No. 42 Pontiac. Sabates partnered with Chip Ganassi in 2001 and Chip Ganassi Racing continues to field car No. 42 with Kyle Larson behind the wheel. In addition to the Pettys, the list of drivers to win with No. 42 includes Larson (6), Juan Pablo Montoya (2), Joe Nemechek (1), Jim Paschal (4) and Marvin Panch (1). Country music singing legend Marty Robbins also used the number in 25 starts during the 1970s.

Michael Annett finally picked up his first XFINITY Series triumph in 2019. The remainder of 2020 looks to be even more promising as he picks up the momentum with crew chief Travis Mack at JR Motorsports. ▶  WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS ONCE THE SEASON GETS BACK UP AND RUNNING? “The expectations are to get back to where we should be qualifying, inside the top 10 and towards the top five, and then putting whole races together. One of the things we struggled with in the beginning of the year was making the right calls and keeping up with the track. We had some really good racecars that we sort of got complacent with and didn’t make any changes where we probably should have. I’m going back over the tapes and looking at my comments and how Travis interpreted them and put them to use on pit road, just so we have three solid segments instead of one or two.”

▶  HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO GET BACK ON TO THE RACETRACK? “I can’t wait. You come off a three-month offseason and you’re counting down the days to February. I can’t wait to get back and make that most recent race a lot better one.
