▶▶ With its concrete surface and high-banked turns, the “Monster Mile” is one of the most intimidating tracks on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule. There is a casino located on the track property and it’s always a good bet Jimmie Johnson will win at Dover. Johnson has a record 11 victories here, including in this race one year ago. Kyle Busch recorded a victory at Dover in the NASCAR playoffs last fall and he won the pole in June. Also, keep an eye on defending series champion Martin Truex Jr. as Dover is the home track for the native of Mayetta, New Jersey.
▶▶ Jimmie Johnson has a record 11 victories at Dover International Speedway, eight more than Kyle Busch who is next best among active drivers. Johnson tied Cale Yarborough for sixth on the series’ all-time wins list (83) with his victory here last June.
RACE REWIND ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson passed leader Kyle Larson on a restart with two laps remaining and went on to his 83rd series victory. It took several seconds for NASCAR to wave the checkered flag as Ty Dillon triggered a wreck behind the leaders on the final lap.

ollowing the madness of Talladega, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series moves to the venue known most widely as the Monster Mile. Arguably NASCAR’s most treacherous track, Dover International Speedway presents a host of challenges for drivers and teams alike. Whether it be the bumpy concrete racing surface, the lightning fast speeds or
the super-steep banks, Dover is historically a handful for competitors to navigate. Expect Sunday’s AAA 400 Drive for Autism to be no different. “Definitely Dover is an interesting track,” said three-time Dover winner Kyle Busch. “It’s definitely fun and challenging. You should ask Jimmie Johnson about how to get around there; he’s pretty good there, I heard. We’ve won there a couple times so it’s nice to have a little collection of monster trophies going.” Busch, whose most recent Dover win came last fall, fails to see a lot of similarity between Dover and Bristol Motor Speedway — the only DOVER PREVIEW: MAY 3, 2018

other all-concrete track on the schedule. While Bristol is fast around both the top and the bottom, the low groove is by far the preferred way to tackle Dover’s steep corners. “Dover, it’s still always been around the bottom, and it kind of changes throughout the race, too, as the rubber goes down there,” Busch said. “And the way that place has worn over the years, it’s definitely got a lot bumpier.
You can feel Bristol getting to that fashion, too. A lot of guys have been commenting on just how bumpy the spring race at Bristol was and how the cars and the tires were really bouncing on the race track. You get that at Dover, for sure, but I think Dover is maybe worse or feels worse because the amount of speed that you’re carrying there that you feel all that stuff a lot more.”
Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who finished a season-best fourth at Bristol earlier this season, hopes to translate that success to Sunday. “I wish the tracks were identical,” he said. “I think the feel in the race car needs to be about the same. I feel like we learned a lot at Bristol in our practice sessions that helped us for that race. A couple things we tried that we liked in our race car that

we hadn’t been running at Bristol. I am looking forward to getting that at Dover and seeing if that helps our performance there as well.” One driver who can’t wait to get to Dover is rookie Darrell Wallace Jr., who considers the Delaware oval his favorite track. “You are hauling the mail there,” said Wallace, who knows Dover from his days in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. “I remember walking across the bridge
while Cup practice was going on and just you can’t really see much because they are so loud through that little walkway there and they are so fast coming out of Turn 2, so I’m excited to get to experience it and dive off into Turn 1 and get to feel that roller coaster effect, and to see just how badass it is. I’m excited to get there.” Of course, no one could be more excited about racing at Dover than Jimmie Johnson, whose 11 wins at the track
are a Monster Energy Series record. In fact, it was at Dover that Johnson scored his most recent victory one year ago. “Dover, hands down, is one of my favorite tracks,” the seven-time Monster Energy Series champion said. “It suits my driving style as well as the team in how they build and set up the cars. We have had so much success over the years at Dover that I wish we raced there every weekend. I can’t wait to get in that race car.”

FIVE TO WATCH AT DOVER BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ Prior to the wild card that is Talladega, Kyle Busch had won three consecutive races. It’ll be back to business this weekend at Dover for Busch, who is a three-time winner and the most recent winner at the Monster Mile. ▶▶ Jimmie Johnson is the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ all-time wins leader at Dover, with 11 victories. The only problem is that his most recent victory of any kind came in this race one year ago. ▶▶ Martin Truex Jr. owns two wins at Dover, the first coming in 2007 and the second coming in the fall of 2016. Expect the reigning series champion’s Toyota to be fast all weekend. ▶▶ Since ripping off three consecutive wins from late February into early March, Kevin Harvick has cooled off a bit. Don’t count him out, however, at Dover, where he scored a commanding victory in the fall of 2015. ▶▶ Joey Logano’s victory last weekend at Talladega punctuated an excellent start to the season for the Team Penske driver, who is back to contending for wins on a weekly basis again after going an entire year with nary a trip to Victory Lane.

or NASCAR fans, it’s a lot like Christmas. The only differences? The gifts come 10 months out of the year instead of just one, and they’re wrapped in a Speed Crate instead of a box. By signing up and picking a driver at the Speed Crate website, https://speedcrate. co/, fans receive a monthly shipment of 4-5 - (3-5) items related to their driver of choice.
Speed Crate delivers right to your front door via the United States postal service. Monthly subscriptions are priced at just $29.99, and the items in each monthly shipment amount to more than $50 in retail value. Items include apparel (shirts, hats, socks, etc.), accessories (credential holders, car decals, travel coffee mugs, lanyards, koozies, pens, flags, etc.) and much more. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. SPOTLIGHT “We think that the more we can just provide really cool products that fans want, the more Speed Crate will grow,” Cox said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing.” Speed Crate originally featured just 12 drivers from whom subscribers could choose. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

avid Pearson was among a handful of drivers during the 1960s and ’70s who formed the foundation and set the standards for NASCAR racing as it is known today. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Pearson’s first taste of racing came when the youngster climbed a tree to

BREAKING IN HIS FAVOR STEPHEN LEICHT GRATEFUL TO BE BACK IN NASCAR BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

tephen Leicht was once a rising star in the NASCAR realm. But after a series of tough breaks following stints with Robert Yates Racing and Richard Childress Racing, he ended up with parttime, underfunded gigs. After a few years off, the North Carolina native is back with the newly formed JP Motorsports. What does it mean to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR again? “Anytime you have an opportunity to drive at this level, it’s always an honor. There are a lot of talented drivers out there who don’t
get a chance simply due to sponsorships.” Did you ever think this opportunity would happen? “I honestly at one time started to lose hope in finding another opportunity, but faith is a powerful thing as is hope and I’m grateful to Jerry and Phyllis Hattaway for the opportunity they have provided me.” What does JP Motorsports need to improve on? “Our team has struggled the first part of the season, but we’ve done a great job the last three weeks being better prepared when we get to the racetrack. on Desrocher, tire specialist for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Kyle Busch, saw his first NASCAR race at Loudon, New Hampshire in the mid-1990s when he was only 7 years old. He and his family went there for NASCAR’s Cup series event but because of a Sunday rainout, enjoyed a NASCAR North Busch Series instead. Desrocher couldn’t ignore the lights and sounds just down the road from his Plattsburg, N.Y. home. “There was a local short track next to my house called Airborne (Park) Speedway,”
Desrocher said. “You could pretty much ride a four wheeler over there. There was a guy named Bucko Branham and he used to race there all the time. I used to go hang out with him in the pits.” After moving to North Carolina and completing his studies at the NASCAR Technical Institute in 2008, he met a pit crew coach at a local gym that suggested he might make a great tire changer. An interview was set up with Braun Racing and soon after, Desrocher was gluing lugs to wheels, set up pit areas and changed tires during pit stops. Over the years, he has worked in various divisions with drivers and teams, such as Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Ron Hornaday Jr. as well as ThorSport Racing, and Hendrick Motorsports, to name only a few. While with Joe Gibbs Racing, Desrocher focuses solely on getting Kyle Busch’s tires ready to race. “A tire is kind of everything,” Desrocher said. “That’s where you get all of your information. Whatever change you make to the car, it all relates to the tires and that’s the last thing you get to see. You’re going to have tire wear or pressure builds or temperatures. Are you following the advice of your family doctor or internist?” In addition to being a racing fan, Cormier also races go-karts at top speeds of up to 130 mph. He has established relationships with multiple racing organizations, such as ARCA, NASCAR and Formula 1. His collaboration with other safety organizations like the International Council of Motorsports Sciences, Motorsports Safety Education Foundation, After the Impact Fund, Race Go Safer, and Think First has created an important platform for an ever-growing prosperity of safety informational exchange. “I still race professionally, so my goal is to provide safety tips to drivers, pit crew and loyal fans that come out every weekend,” Cormier said. “While the sport has dangers, we can take precautions to provide a measure of safety.” With his surgical background, Cormier has been able to engage companies to establish new technologies to diagnose and rehabilitate head injuries. He is now focusing his efforts on prevention. One particular piece of technology that has Cormier excited is Q30 Innovations’ Q-Collar. Q-Collar’s technology has been approved for sale in Canada, where it is being marketed as the Bauer Neuroshield. The company has been around for more than seven years,
and the data collection remains third party. This means that the company is unable to manipulate the data, which ensures the accuracy of the efficacy and outcomes. This promising research into concussion prevention is inspired by human yawns, woodpecker tongues and mountain-dwelling rams. The manifestation of this work is the novel Q-Collar, a device worn around the neck that works by enhancing the brain’s own physiology by lightly compressing the jugular vein to increase blood volume in the skull. That may help prevent the brain from moving around within the skull and thus could reduce traumatic brain injuries. The Q-Collar is actively being evaluated with consideration for its involvement in motorsports. The Q-Collar is already worn by professional athletes in other forms of high contact sports like football, hockey, soccer and even the military. “I am particularly excited with the possibility of driver athletes, in varying age groups, being able to embrace this novel technology,” Cormier said. “There are exciting nuances with the collar that we think could have an important role with regards to helping on the preventive side of concussions, and part of the technology is established on nature’s physiological advantages found in other animals and human beings. “This collar provides a small defined amount DOVER PREVIEW: MAY 3, 2018

of pressure over the neck muscles which, in effect, engages a ligament to react similarly to what a battle ram experiences. In the battle ram, this band causes a small reduction in blood flow from the brain which creates an internal air bag, which apparently protects this species from brain injuries.” Through Cormier’s work with racecar drivers, he has found that very few have the desire to alter their racing styles, so preventative measures are best taken before the racing begins. “We deal with brain injuries all the time,
ranging from mild to more severe,” Cormier said. “Those predispose you to the longterm effects of brain injury. The diagnosis of concussions is certainly key to taking the racer athlete out of the contest and providing rest. The appropriate rest will help provide longevity in the sport and additionally create an environment whereby transitioning into retirement occurs with their faculties intact. hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! ans 36,000 strong came to Charlotte Motor Speedway on June 19, 1960 for the first time to see a field of 60 cars battle for 600 miles on the newly paved oval. Chunks of asphalt came up and caused bothersome pot holes, prompting many chief mechanics to install screens over front grilles to protect their car’s radiators. Chattanooga native Joe Lee Johnson sealed the deal by driving a Paul McDuffie-owned Chevrolet Impala to the second NASCAR victory of his career. He led the final 48 circuits after making up a five-lap deficit when race leader
Jack Smith was sidelined with a hole in his gas tank. Johnson’s career ended in 1962, in part because McDuffie, crewman Charles Sweatland and NASCAR official Joe Taylor, lost their lives in a pit road accident at Darlington Raceway during the 1960 Southern 500. Johnson passed away May 26, 2005 at his Tennessee home at the age of 75. Johnson talked about his career in a 1999 interview with Georgia Racing History.com. It was the same year Tony Stewart attempted to run the Coca-Cola 600 and the Indianapolis 500 on the same day. “I know the cars are different today,” Johnson said. “You couldn’t have physically done that back in the sixties, but man, it was still something.
