LARSON’S CHANCE AT HISTORY THE YOUNG STAR WILL BE LOOKING FOR HIS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN AT MIS BY JARED TURNER

rom June 1985 to August 1986, Bill Elliott won four races in a row at Michigan International Speedway. No Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver before or since has captured four consecutive victories at the 2-mile track. Kyle Larson has an opportunity to change that this weekend. When the green flag waves on Sunday’s
FireKeepers Casino 400, Larson will be vying for a fourth consecutive triumph at the high-speed venue in the Irish Hills. However, if Larson can pull it off, his victories at Michigan will have stretched over three seasons — making his streak, in some ways, even more unthinkable than Elliott’s. So, while a Larson victory on Sunday would tie the mark set by the NASCAR Hall of Famer and 1988 Monster Energy Series champion, history would also be made. “Yeah, that’d be really cool,” said Larson, whose first Michigan triumph came in August 2016. “It’s not very often that somebody wins four in a row at a track. That’s our goal going into there is to get the win. I think we’ve obviously proven we’ve got fast race cars there at Michigan. Even the last one we had there, we weren’t the fastest car, but we still executed perfectly to get the win. So, yeah, I’m excited for it. But, you never
really know once you get there.” So, what is it about MIS that has allowed Larson to enjoy so much success? “I don’t know,” the driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet said. “I think just having a fast race car there is the most important thing. Even before the wins, that was one of our better tracks, I felt like. So, I feel like our race team’s just got a nice handle on the setup it takes to be fast
there.” Larson’s victories at MIS have come in dramatically different forms. In the first one, he led 41 of 200 laps. In the second, he led 96 laps — nearly half the race. But, last August at MIS, Larson led only two laps — and they were the final two. Regardless of the formula, Larson has developed an uncanny knack for ending up in the same place at day’s end — Victory Lane. “I’m excited to go there off

of three wins in a row,” Larson said. “Yeah, you know, for whatever reason, we’ve been fast there. We actually weren’t that fast the last one we had, but we were able to have some good restarts at the end. Hopefully, we can go and have our car as competitive as it was the first two times and try and get a fourth win.” So, how does Larson think he might react if he is able to pick up a fourth consecutive victory at MIS? After all,
a history-making victory of this magnitude would certainly merit a memorable celebration. “If you were to win a fourth in a row, I think you would just excited about trying to win a fifth in a row,” Larson said. “I don’t think you celebrate any differently. I think you just look forward to trying to make it five in a row.” Perhaps it’s that kind of tempered, heads-down,
business-like approach that makes Larson so hard to beat at Michigan. “I think anytime you win somewhere, you have added confidence every time you go,” Larson said. “We’ve been able to win the last three, so I’m really confident. We’re probably not as fast as what we may have been the last few times we’ve won there, so we’ll just to have to work a little harder throughout the weekend.”

FIVE TO WATCH AT MICHIGAN BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ Kyle Larson owns three consecutive victories at Michigan. Can the Chip Ganassi Racing driver make it four in a row? That would be a remarkable achievement, especially in light of the fact that Larson is winless in 14 starts this season. ▶▶ Feeling good on the heels of a huge win at Pocono, Martin Truex Jr. looks to break through at Michigan — a track where the reigning series champion is winless in 24 starts but finished second his last time out. ▶▶ Chase Elliott has three second-place finishes and an eighth-place finish over four starts at Michigan. Still searching for his first series victory, the second-generation driver has as good of a shot to get it at Michigan as anywhere. ▶▶ The last driver not named Kyle Larson to win at Michigan? That would be Joey Logano, who went to Victory Lane at the 2-mile track in June 2016. Logano also won at Michigan in August 2013, so he can certainly do it again. ▶▶ It has been a long time — 2010, in fact — since Kevin Harvick won at Michigan, and that win came with his former team. But, based on the way Harvick has performed this season, he has to be considered a threat.

That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. SPOTLIGHT “We think that the more we can just provide really cool products that fans want, the more Speed Crate will grow,” Cox said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing.” Speed Crate originally featured just 12 drivers from whom subscribers could choose. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

ev Racing’s Ryan Vargas is not your normal 17-year-old. A member of the 2018 NASCAR Next class, Vargas is in the midst of his rookie year in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. While the journey hasn’t been easy, he is determined to get his No. 2 Toyota running near the top of the field. Where did the nickname “The Rhino” come from? “The nickname came from t-ball. I was one of the fastest runners, but I was also one of
the fattest.” How difficult has it been to adjust to K&N Pro Series East racing? “It’s been very difficult, the way you have to drive these cars are completely different from the late models back home, but I love the challenge.” What do you feel like you need to improve on as a driver? “As a driver, I feel I just need to be more aggressive. I’ve spent my whole racing career having to save our equipment because of funds. But with the opportunity that Rev Racing has presented to me, I need to be able to make some more aggressive moves to get the finishes we deserve. ichael Williams, transporter driver for Team Penske Racing and driver Brad Keselowski, saw his father race on the local short tracks in Alabama before taking on a driving career of his own at such tracks as Montgomery (Ala.) Speedway and South Alabama Speedway in the town of Kinston. “We didn’t even know there was a NASCAR until I got to be 14 or 15,” Williams said. “Davey Allison started coming around (as a Cup series driver). I was from Alabama and he was from Alabama so that kind of piqued my interest in the NASCAR world. That was
probably in the late 1980s.” While working as a heavy equipment hauler for a construction company in 2000, Williams visited friends that worked for Cup series team owner James Finch. While there, he was offered a job as a transporter driver. Over the past two decades, he has driven for Finch, Red Bull Racing and team owner Roger Penske beginning in 2012. Once the transporter is parked in the garage area, Williams also helps in a way that keeps his passion for racing strong. “I’m not just your average hauler driver. I’m also a mechanic,” Williams said. “(Co-driver) Chris Minton tales care of more of the truck stuff when we get to the race track. I’m kind of just a floater and where I can fill in. I can jump in to make a charge, but my main duties are to help the underneath guy with jack crew extensions, fuel cells and spring tethers.” MICHIGAN PREVIEW: JUNE 7, 2018

PIRTEK MAKES FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP MORE ACCESSIBLE TO MORE PEOPLE BY JARED TURNER
S
uppose someone wishes to open a franchise in an industry where he or she has never actually worked. In many cases, it’s no problem – hands-on experience in the field isn’t necessarily a prerequisite. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have the extra edge. At PIRTEK, the world’s leading hydraulic and industrial hose replacement service, it’s fairly
common to see former employees venture out and acquire PIRTEK franchises – even though industry experience is not necessary. They believe in the company and want to join the ranks of franchisees themselves. One example is Oliver Romano, owner of PIRTEK Grand Rapids in Grand Rapids, MI. Romano worked at several PIRTEK locations in the Detroit area, eventually moving up to be a partner and general manager before launching a franchise on the other side of the state. “I started out there [Detroit] as a technician,” he said. “But I was really involved, working with the MICHIGAN PREVIEW: JUNE 7, 2018

SPOTLIGHT business, pushing sales.” In 2016, PIRTEK opened up franchise ownership to a larger group with the rollout of its Tier 2, mobile-only option. Under the Tier 2 model, a franchisee can lease two vehicles and keep all the inventory in a storage facility – there’s no need for a physical store. It allows PIRTEK ownership at a significantly lower point of entry than the traditional Tier 1 model, which includes a Service & Supply Center. The plan for Tier 2 locations is to upgrade into full, Tier 1 businesses within three years. So far, it’s working well. “The Tier 2 locations hit profitably in a shorter period of time, because they have less overhead compared to a Tier 1,” said Glenn Duncan, CEO of PIRTEK. “They’re more sales-focused, too. They don’t have a home base, so they’re out in the field a lot. In fact, some current Tier 2 locations are talking about expanding into a Tier 1 earlier than three years because of customer demand.” Romano is one such owner. He opened his
mobile-only Grand Rapids location in March 2017. A year later, he had already upgraded to a Tier 1 Service & Supply Center at 3504 Roger B. Chaffee Memorial Drive, Grand Rapids, MI 49548. “My customers wanted a physical location, so I set it up,” said Romano, also a shareholder in four other PIRTEK in Michigan: Madison Heights, Sterling Heights, Westland and Wixom. “Having a store, a physical location helps develop the brand.” PIRTEK Grand Rapids serves a wide region of western Michigan that includes Kalamazoo, Holland and Muskegon. The location has also served customers in such far-flung cities as Traverse City. When a hydraulic or pneumatic hose fails on a piece of machinery within the coverage area, PIRTEK technicians arrive onsite in Mobile Service Vehicles to perform the repair. “Instead of someone at the factory having to shop around town for the right hose, we just take care of it,” Romano said. “All the fitting is done in the vehicle.”

One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in the fertile Pinar del Rio of Cuba in 1886. Melanio’s son Hipolito took over from his father in 1920 eventually passing it on to his son Gilberto Oliva, Sr.
who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. eff Gordon, driver of the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, collected five Cup series wins at Sonoma Raceway, the last coming on June 25, 2006. The native of nearby Vallejo, Calif., led the final 44 laps of the 110-lap race and sealed the deal with a pass for the lead over teammate Terry Labonte on Lap 88. Team Penske’s Ryan Newman also passed Labonte in the closing laps to secure a second-place finish. Gordon also enjoyed victories on the 1.9mile road course in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2004 prior to securing the win in front of a crowd
of 102,000. Gordon did not lead the field until gaining the top position with 22 laps remaining. The talented road course ace had mastered Sonoma Raceway so many times in the past taught him exactly when to make his move for the victory. Gordon was able to miss the multi-car accident that involved J.J. Yeley, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte and Reed Sorenson in turn two with four laps remaining. “I have always enjoyed Sonoma Raceway in part because I have friends and family there,” Gordon said. “It’s a track that’s been so good to me over the years. Every time we went there, we knew we had a real shot to win, thanks to Hendrick Motorsports and a great crew. The 2006 win was my last there but a very special win.” MICHIGAN PREVIEW: JUNE 7, 2018
