RECORD BOOK
▶▶ Pocono Raceway is the most unique race track on the NASCAR circuit and its triangular shape has challenged the sport’s best drivers since 1974. Upsets are fairly common at the “Tricky Triangle” as was evidenced when Ryan Blaney won his first Cup Series race last June while driving for Wood Brothers Racing. Chris Buescher also scored his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory here in August 2016. Martin Truex Jr. snapped a 69-race winless streak with a Pocono victory in June 2015.
▶▶ Four-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon leads the Pocono Raceway win list with six victories. Denny Hamlin is tops among active drivers with four.
RACE REWIND ▶▶ Dogged by Kevin Harvick for the final eight laps of the 2017 Pocono 400, third-generational driver Ryan Blaney held off the 2014 series champion in a breathtaking battle to claim the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career.

A TWO-MAN RACE? HISTORY SAYS IT WILL COME DOWN TO KYLE BUSCH, KEVIN HARVICK AT POCONO BY JARED TURNER
F
irst, the bad news for everyone not named Kyle Busch or Kevin Harvick. Based on the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season to date, the odds are substantially stacked someone besides Busch or Harvick winning Sunday’s Pocono 400 at Pocono Raceway. Now, the good news. Based on history at
Pocono — and nothing to do with the 2018 season dominated by Busch and Harvick — the 2.5-mile venue provides as good of an opportunity as any all season for a different driver to go to Victory Lane. That’s because Busch and Harvick collectively have just one win at the triangular shaped track. The only problem? That win came in August — the last time the Monster Energy Series competed at Pocono — and Busch went to Victory Lane with a dominant performance in which he led nearly half the race. Harvick, meanwhile, despite having never won at Pocono, finished a close second to Ryan POCONO PREVIEW: MAY 31, 2018

Blaney one year ago at the Tricky Triangle. So, while this weekend might present a decent opportunity for a driver besides Busch or Harvick to go to Victory Lane, that actually happening is far from a foregone conclusion. Only this much is certain: Drivers, like always, will have their hands full navigating Pocono’s challenging layout — which features not only three distinct corners but corners all featuring a different degree of banking.
“Pocono is such a unique place,” said seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson, a three-time Pocono winner. “We’re always stuck in an engineering kind of mindset of is it better to be faster on the straightaways or through the corners or how you set the car’s ride heights; the drag or downforce you might put in the car due to the ride heights. “From a driver’s standpoint, it’s frustrating because a small loss of time through the center of the corner after you
have almost a mile-long front straightaway, you can look at a stopwatch and be five, six, or seven-tenths off and think, ‘Wow, we’re really out of it.’ But honestly, it was just a small little thing that happened in the center of Turn 3 that compounded down the front. So, it is a very challenging track. It’s unique onto itself.” Although he’s never won at Pocono, Harvick looks forward to trying to capture that elusive victory this weekend. After all, what

better time to get a Pocono win than in a season when he’s already won five races? “I think I’ve finished second three times at Pocono since we came to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014,” Harvick said. “It was a track that I was never really that competitive at while I was at Richard Childress Racing. So, having those chances to win is a lot of fun because it’s a racetrack that I hadn’t had a lot of success at early in my career. To come back and be that
competitive and to feel that we could win at any moment because we’ve run well enough at all of them, it’d be nice to check this one off the remaining list of three.” With his victory in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Busch checked off the one remaining track where he had never won a Monster Energy Series race. Collectively, Busch and Harvick have now won nine of this season’s 13 races, so don’t expect either to leave Pocono
without a fight. “I think I’ve been a bit inconsistent or streaky there over the years,” said Busch, the 2015 series champion. “Started off early in my career with some top-five finishes and then went through a stretch where we weren’t very good. Lately, we’ve certainly been better there.” This season, Busch and Harvick have been really good just about everywhere. Pocono may or may not buck the trend.

FIVE TO WATCH AT POCONO BY JARED TURNER
▶▶ Denny Hamlin owns four wins at Pocono but is still seeking his first win of 2018. Fresh off a solid third-place finish in the Coke 600, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has some momentum at his back. ▶▶ Kyle Busch had never won at Pocono until last August when he triumphed in his 26th start at the Tricky Triangle. Starting from the pole, Busch led 74 of 160 laps. That’s almost as dominant as his victory this past weekend at Charlotte. ▶▶ Recently honored at the White House for his 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship, Martin Truex Jr. continues his quest for back-to-back titles at a place where he won in June 2015. ▶▶ Driving for the Wood Brothers one year ago at Pocono, Ryan Blaney captured his first career Monster Energy Series win. Now with Team Penske, Blaney has an even better opportunity to achieve the same result. ▶▶ Before Kyle Busch notched his first Pocono win, older brother Kurt already had three Pocono victories. The most recent came in June 2016. The elder Busch sibling is now seeking his first win of any kind since the 2017 Daytona 500.

subscribers. That number has since nearly quadrupled. “We’re really growing every day, which is really cool to see,” Cox said. “We know that we’ve really just scratched the surface of where we can go with it, because every day we have people inquiring, ‘What is Speed Crate? Where do I sign up?’ And all that stuff. So, we’re still really just being
introduced at this point.” Fans never know exactly what they will find in a Speed Crate. They just know that all products in a Speed Crate come from officially licensed NASCAR partners and manufacturers. “It changes every month,” Cox said. “We don’t do any duplicates. Our big thing is we’re not going to send you the same item twice.” While Speed Crate’s inventory of NASCAR collectibles and paraphernalia is made up mostly of items you might find in souvenir trailers at the track, Speed Crate has expanded this season to include more custom-style merchandise. – a large portion of the items are actually not available at the track and many are custom so they cannot be found any where besides Speed Crate, not online or at the track For example, Alex Bowman — the new driver of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet — recently donated some autographed Hero Cards that 10 lucky fans would receive in a future Speed Crate. SPOTLIGHT “We think that the more we can just provide really cool products that fans want, the more Speed Crate will grow,” Cox said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing.” Speed Crate originally featured just 12 drivers from whom subscribers could choose. Now there are 20 active drivers and one retired driver — NASCAR’s 15-time most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis, and subscribers are free to change drivers at any time. Tired of getting Chase Elliott gear, for example? You can switch to Brad Keselowski or someone else with a simple click — and not be charged extra. Speed Crate ships items FebruaryNovember and takes a break in December and January to beef up its inventory for the upcoming NASCAR season. Perhaps the best news of all? Speed Crate is looking to broaden its inventory even more in the months and years to come. “People want die-casts and some other items that aren’t the easiest to get, and we’re working hard to make that happen,” Cox said. “We’re listening to the feedback and making sure we’re kind of adjusting with what people want to see.”

oe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones wants nothing to do with “The Sophomore Slump”. Jones, who took over the No. 20 Cup car from Matt Kenseth, stepped into the season with high expectations and he’s ready to fulfill them. How different is Joe Gibbs Racing compared to Furniture Row Racing? “There’s a few differences. The processes that JGR does are somewhat different with
the ways they prepare the cars. It’s the same racecar, chassis and motors, but from there, it’s all different. Chris [Gayle, crew chief] had to work through some of that stuff to figure it out. I had to learn how to work with a new group of guys and how to go about that.” How do you feel you’ve grown as a driver since last year? “I think overall I’m a lot more consistent. The consistency is higher than it was last year. Last year, we had a lot of DNFs and times that we should’ve run better than we did. This year, we’ve had races that we ran better than we should have. We’ve had very few DNFs. We need to limit the mistakes.” POCONO PREVIEW: MAY 31, 2018

tephen Appell, interior specialist for Wood Brothers Racing and driver Paul Menard, was introduced to NASCAR at the age of 4 after taking a trip with his family to Disneyland. When he became scared of the characters, his father took him back to the hotel where they watched the 1995 Daytona 500. Upon returning home, they discovered a race track nearby and found their new passion. “Both my Dad and I fell in love with racing when we went to Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway,” Appell said. “My Dad had gotten onto a West
Coast Pro Truck team. Just a couple of weeks ago, a guy that worked with him on one of the first truck teams showed him a photo of me at about 10 years old inside the truck. I began working on racecars at age 14.” A decade later in 2013, he was offered a chance to work in public relations, but his heart was set on working on racecars. A friend from California working in the Cup series for BK Racing helped him land a job as a tire specialist. Appell continued in that role for HScott Motorsports and Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series before changing to interior specialist with Wood Brothers Racing. He makes certain Menard has what he needs wherever the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series schedule takes them. “Basically, everything is in the cockpit that needs to be there,” Appell said. “The biggest thing is that Paul is comfortable and has his gloves and ear buds and things where wants them, especially right before the race. It’s all the comfort stuff.” POCONO PREVIEW: MAY 31, 2018

SPOTLIGHT brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. One such area for preventative measures is spinal cord injuries (SCI). The incidence of SCI is highest among persons age 16-30, in whom 53.1 percent of injuries occur; more injuries occur in this age group than all other age groups combined. Males represent 81.2 percent of all report SCIs and 89.8 percent of all sports-related SCIs. Auto accidents are the leading cause of SCI in the United States for people age 65 and younger, while sports and recreation-related SCI injuries primarily affect people under age 29. “In terms of prevention of these types of injuries, there are simple things a person can do like wearing a seatbelt and making sure all passengers are wearing a seatbelt,” Cormier said. “Make sure all car parts are up to date, and the rearview and side mirrors are adjusted to provide more attention to blind spots. Pay attention to the speed limit, and always avoid drunk driving or driving under
the influence of drugs.” If a citizen happens to encounter a car accident in which a driver may have suffered a spinal cord injury, Cormier recommends the ABC steps – airway, breathing, circulation. “When you approach any kind of trauma, it’s important to assess if the person has suffered a neck injury,” Cormier said. “Are they able to move their extremities without any difficulty? Outside of that, it’s important to take in-line cervical precautions by keeping the head in line with the neck and the neck in line with the body. Make sure there are no other red flags.” For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of SCI. Cormier offered some preventative steps to avoid these types of injuries. “Preventing these falls is about making sure there are no obstacles in the way at home,” Cormier said. “Make sure it’s well lit. Make sure medication doses are appropriate, and the floor is clear of debris. Don’t overly wax the floors without placing appropriate signs to keep free of traffic.”

hat began as a tobacco growing business in Cuba over 130 years ago, today has evolved into one of the world’s best cigar manufacturers. who continued the farming until Castro forced him out. Resourceful, Gilberto became a tobacco broker allowing him to travel and emigrate eventually to Nicaragua. By 1969, Gilberto was growing tobacco once again, this time in Nicaragua whose rich soil and climate was close to that of his homeland. Ten years later the Sandanista revolution in
Nicaragua forced Gilberto to grow his tobacco elsewhere. By 1995, with stability back in Nicaragua, Gilberto moved home to Esteli, and resumed his growing and added cigar making to his portfolio. After the cigar boom in the 90s, Gilberto continued making cigars, but being cash strapped like others after the boom, he was able to push ahead by using all the Nicaraguan tobacco

he had been accumulating. His tobacco forced a change in the Oliva blends to all Nicaraguan tobacco and improved his quality. The company’s offerings improved year after year. By 2005, Oliva was being honored by Cigar Aficionado in its top 10 cigars of the year with the Oliva Serie O Classic scoring a 91. The following year, the Oliva Serie G Cameroon made the list of best cigars of the year with a 91. That same year,
Oliva released its Serie V to great acclaim and in 2007 it was rated 4th best cigar with a 93 rating. Oliva cigars continually ranks as one of the best cigars of the year. In 2012, the family released a new Serie V the Melanio edition to honor the man who started it all. Two years later in 2014, the Serie V Melanio would be named the Cigar of the Year with a 96 rating! Near perfection. Just this year, the Serie V rated a 95 and
was the number 3 cigar of the year for 2017. In addition, to the highly rated Serie cigars, Oliva also makes the Nub, which also makes the year’s best cigar list. In fact, Oliva cigars have remained on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 cigars of the year for 12 years straight. On top of that, Oliva believes in keeping prices in check. The company’s cigars start at under $4 and go up to about $15. The highly rated Serie V belicoso is just over $8.00 depending on local taxes.

THREE TIME’S A CHARM HARVICK WINS FIRST CUP RACE AT ATLANTA BY BEN WHITE
W
ith the untimely death of seventime Cup series champion Dale Earnhardt at the conclusion of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18, 2001, RCR Enterprises had to look to a future star being groomed to fill the No. 29 Chevrolets for the Welcome, N.C.-based organization. Kevin Harvick, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., was set to run an entire Xfinity (then Busch Series) schedule for team owner Richard Childress. Instead, Harvick finished 14th in his first start at Rockingham, N.C. on Feb. 26. He was
eighth at Las Vegas on March 4 the following week and led 18 of 325 laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 11. He sealed the deal in his third-career Cup start with a surprise victory over Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports by 0.006 seconds at the finish. Harvick circled the track on his cool down lap holding three fingers in the air as a tribute to Dale Earnhardt Sr. Fans in the stands were filled with emotion, many of which held up three fingers to honor Earnhardt and salute Harvick for his incredible storybook victory. “I don’t know how you could script it any different,” Harvick said in victory lane. “I’m sure this is going to be pretty difficult for all of us. All I can say is this one is for Dale … I think somebody was watching over us.” POCONO PREVIEW: MAY 31, 2018

Coolant leak failures can be repaired with K-Seal.
NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S STOP LEAK
C
oolant leak failures are one of the most common reasons for roadside breakdowns. It’s that dreaded feeling when you realize that you’ve got a coolant leak. Maybe it’s the radiator, or the water pump, or worse – the head or the block. You’re likely looking at a bill of hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars to get your vehicle
back on the road. In the past, the early days, you may have been told to try adding pepper, egg, coffee grounds, or even mustard powder in the cooling system to get that leak stopped. More recently someone may have told you to try a stop leak common on the shelves of most auto parts stores. But a lot of those products
contain sodium silicate or liquid glass, the same ingredient they used to seize the engines during “Cash for Clunkers.” Sure the radiator might have been plugged but often other parts of the cooling system were too! But hold on. What if there was a safe way for you to get your trusty friend back on the road for less than

SPOTLIGHT the cost of a KFC family meal? Well there is, with K-Seal Multi-Purpose Permanent Coolant Leak Repair. Made in the USA, K-Seal is a global bestselling cooling system leak sealer with over 6 million bottles sold. It’s a favorite with professional technicians and here’s what a few of them had to say about it recently: “It’s like magic. If it was the 17th century those who make it would be burned at the stake.” “It’s about the only thing I’ve heard that works. We sell it by the caseload.” “I’ve repaired many a car with K-Seal and I know it works.” (Actual testimonial from independent market survey
Dec 2017) We asked Patrick O’Brien, CEO of K-Seal, what makes K-Seal different from all the other stop leaks on the shelf? “K-Seal is the next generation stop leak technology,” O’Brien said. “We’ve developed a ceramic microfiber formula that is safe to use with all types of coolant / antifreeze. Plus, K-Seal was the first multi-purpose formula designed to fix leaks in all hard parts of the cooling system, including the head, head gasket, block, radiator, heater core, water pump casing and freeze plug. It’s safe to use in all water cooled engines from motor cycles right up to heavy duty trucks, and
everything in between. It even fixed a leak on a Top Fuel dragster, and when K-Seal makes a repair it is permanent. It’s way beyond your Grandfather’s old stop leak.” “K-Seal is the only product to have been independently university tested to the ASTM standard for coolant leak repair products. This means it will seal a leak when it’s meant to but it positively will not block even the narrowest waterways in the cooling system. Plus K-Seal is safe for use with aluminium heads including the Northstar block.” www.kseal.com

C
ain Daytona is the latest release from Studio Tobac. The Jalapa Ligero is more refined than other Ligeros. Jalapa Ligero, plus Cain’s triple fermentation, makes Cain Daytona a medium to full-bodied, smooth, rich and flavorful smoke. Making a Straight Ligero cigar requires a unique understanding of the leaf. Ligero comes from the top of the tobacco plant. Its direct exposure to the sun darkens and thickens the leaf. Smaller than leaves lower on the plant, it also enjoys a concentration of nutrients. Habano Seed Ligero is recognized as the most full flavored leaf. Additionally, the region in which this Habano Seed is grown plays a significant role in its flavor and strength. Jalape Ligero is the smoothest of these powerhouses. Jalapa is the northern most tobacco region of Nicaragua. Jalapa Ligero is grown in a valley and enjoys less direct sun, the result is a full body leaf with a more noticeable range of flavor. Cain Daytona is exclusively manufactured and distributed by Tabacalcera Oliva Cigar Co. Learn more at CainCigars.com.
