NASCAR IS RETURNING TO NASHVILLE In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through all the big news stories of the week leading into this weekend’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The biggest story in NASCAR this week was, of course, the announcement that NASCAR would return to Nashville Superspeedway, and Eric gives us his reaction. But up first, Eric takes us through the TV ratings from last weekend’s race at Bristol, as it 0 0 4

looks like nearly 3 million people tuned in for the action at Bristol Motor Speedway. The race was such a success, Eric takes us through why it matters. Watch this week’s episode to find out all the details about how the racing will work at Nashville, how the concrete D-track will affect the on-track product, as well as all the context around why Nashville was even picked in the first place, all on this week’s episode of Out of the Groove!

THINGS TO WATCH AT ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY RACING TO RESUME ON ONE OF NASCAR’S MOST SLIPPERY TRACKS When NASCAR headed south to Atlanta Motor Speedway in mid-March, the race weekend ended before it even started due to growing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. This weekend, drivers and teams will give Atlanta another try — albeit without any fans in the stands for the sixth race in a row. Fans or no fans in attendance, Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 should be worth tuning in for. Following are five things to keep an eye on when the green flag waves this weekend at the historically fast, 1.54-mile track in southern Georgia. BY JA RED TURNER

rom May 17-31, the NASCAR Cup Series raced five times — three times on a Sunday and twice during the week. The idea, of course, is to make up all the races that were missed during the sport’s nearly two-month sabbatical for the coronavirus, with the ultimate goal of running 36 races in 2020 as originally scheduled. Although many drivers and teams actually seem to kind of relish the concept of midweek races, driver Clint Bowyer was thankful to not have a midweek race leading up to this Sunday’s showdown in suburban Atlanta. “It will be nice to have a week to actually kind of reset,” Bowyer said last weekend. “Racing two nights a week is no problem. I mean, we’ve all done that before (at NASCAR’s lower levels). Usually, it was Saturday and Sunday. When it’s a mix of Sunday to Wednesday, it doesn’t give you much time in between to kind of sit back and have a conversation with the (team) guys.”

CONTINUED SPEED FROM THE HENDRICK CAMP
A
ll season long, Hendrick Motorsports has been NASCAR’s most improved organization from 2019 in terms of overall speed in its race cars. Oftentimes, however, speed hasn’t translated into results. While Hendrick drivers have captured two of the nine NASCAR Cup Series races in 2020, the reality is that the organization led by 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Rick Hendrick probably should have gone to Victory Lane several more times. But whether due to botched pit strategy or old-fashioned bad luck, the Hendrick drivers haven’t been able to take full advantage of their speed on numerous occasions. Look for the Hendrick bunch to be fast again this weekend at Atlanta, although other teams have perhaps started closing the gap. “We’re just a touch behind,” Team Penske driver Brad Keselowski said. “I think the mile-and-a-halves, I would say Hendrick is definitely a little better. On the short tracks, I think we’re really, really close.”

LINGERING TENSIONS BETWEEN CHASE ELLIOTT & JOEY LOGANO
W
hen the green flag waves on Sunday at Atlanta, it will be the first time that Chase Elliott and Joey Logano have been on track since clashing while battling for the lead in the final laps of last weekend’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway. After the contact between Elliott and Logano at Bristol ruined both drivers’ shot at the victory, the two combatants immersed themselves in a rather animated post-race conversation on pit road. While no punches were thrown and no shoves were given, Logano was livid about the contact, which occurred when Elliott’s No. 9 car drifted up the track into the No. 22. Elliott, meanwhile, took on a more conciliatory tone — at least in front of the TV cameras. Will Logano attempt to exact some payback this weekend for Elliott’s perceived misdeed in the waning moments at Bristol? Stay tuned. Also, keep in mind that Atlanta is a home race for Elliott — who hails from nearby Dawsonville, Georgia.

SLIPPING AND SLIDING
I
f Atlanta Motor Speedway is known for anything, it’s for its rugged, abrasive, aging track surface — which drivers, almost universally, love. “The surface is old, and that allows the cars to spread around more,” Wood Brothers Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto said. “It makes it more racey, more fun.” Worn pavement also puts a premium on tire management, and that’s OK with DiBenedetto. “It’s more my style,” he said. “It’s a fun track. Hopefully, we can qualify decent, race well and stay up front the whole time.” While it’s inevitable that Atlanta — which hasn’t been paved since a reconfiguration from a true oval to a quad-oval in 1997 — will eventually have to be repaved, DiBenedetto hopes that can wait as long as possible. “New repaves are never fun,” he said. “It takes years to get the asphalt aged so that it races well. That asphalt at Atlanta gives the track character and makes for multiple lanes. We all love it.”

A CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC BRAD KESELOWSKI
REPLACEMENT
LIFETIME
A
winner of two of the five races since NASCAR returned to action following its two-month hiatus for the coronavirus pandemic, Brad Keselowski comes to Atlanta with great momentum on his side. But will he continue his hot streak or cool off a bit? Keselowski, for his part, isn’t ready to declare himself the favorite this weekend. “Atlanta is not like any other mile-and-a-half we go to,” the 2012 series champion said. “The cars are so fast at the beginning of the run and so slow at the end of the run. It’s such a big delta there. It’s hard to say who is going to be good, who is not, especially without having a lot of practice and all those things. I suspect, if I was to take a blind guess, that the 9 car (Chase Elliott) and 88 (Alex Bowman) will be very, very strong and tough to beat. We’re going to do our best to keep them honest.”

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER
■■ The No. 48 Hendricks Motorsports Chevrolet had a tribute to the lives lost in a plane crash October 24, 2004, while traveling to the Martinsville Speedway.
A BITTERSWEET MEMORY FOR JOHNSON AT ATLANTA BY JA RED TURNER
O
f all the races Jimmie Johnson has won during his lengthy NASCAR Cup Series career, none have been more bittersweet or emotional than the 2004 Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Racing with a heavy heart just one week after 10 people connected with Hendrick Motorsports died in a plane crash while en route to Martinsville Speedway, Johnson gave the organization and its fans something to celebrate amid their grieving. Carrying a special hood on his No. 48 car that bore photos of each of those who tragically lost their lives, Johnson held off a hardcharging Mark Martin to prevail for the third weekend in a row. The previous weekend at Martinsville, Johnson didn’t celebrate in Victory Lane, having learned moments after the race about the fatal crash that resulted in the death of team owner Rick Hendrick’s son, Ricky, and Rick’s brother, John, along with Hendrick Motorsports lead engine builder Randy Dorton, among others. Johnson used the moments after his Atlanta victory to pay
0 1 8

tribute to his friends and colleagues whose lives were cut short. “Once I got in the car today, I knew exactly what we were supposed to do. I honestly forgot about everything until the checkered flag,” Johnson said. “I wanted to do the victory lap to honor our friends. It doesn’t change anything, and we don’t get back our friends that we lost. But it makes all of us feel a little better to be able to do something like this.” Johnson led only 17 laps at Atlanta, compared to Martin’s 227 laps out front. But after taking the lead from Kasey Kahne with 10 laps to go, Johnson never trailed again. “I don’t even know where to start,” Johnson said after winning for the 13th time as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. “As I am sure you can imagine, I am at a loss for words.”

ASCAR Hall of Famers Mark Martin and David Pearson lead the list of 12 drivers who have won NASCAR Cup Series races in cars carrying No. 6. Pearson recorded 27 of his 105 victories between 1962 and 1967 in No. 6 Dodges owned and prepared by former driver Cotton Owens, while Martin earned 35 of his 40 career wins between 1988 and 2006 while piloting No. 6 Fords fielded by car owner Jack Roush. Fenway Racing, began using No. 6 in 1988 when it joined forces with Martin to field a NASCAR Cup Series entry and continues to utilize the number with Ryan Newman driving. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 6 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane 83 times while posting 711 top-10 finishes in nearly 1,700 starts. Stock car racing pioneer Marshall Teague was the first driver to use No. 6 in the NASCAR Cup Series when he brought Bill Appleton’s 1949 Hudson home 14th in the July 19, 1949, event on the Beach & Road Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Teague was also the first driver to win in car No. 6 when the topped the Feb. 11, 1951, NASCAR season opener in Daytona Beach. Teague (7) and Owens (6) join Martin and Pearson as the only drivers with multiple wins in car No. 6.

Landon Cassill BY ROB TIONGSON
Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, he talks with Landon Cassill, a driver in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. ▶ HOW’S YOUR CURRENT SITUATION LOOKING WITH MORGAN SHEPHERD’S NO. 89 TEAM? It’s tough right now with no qualifying. The starting grids are preset and Shepherd Ventures doesn’t have a guaranteed spot in the races that’ll pay the full prize money allotment which is what our team depends on. I’ve done a lot with Morgan and we have a lot of commitment to each other. I can also drive for somebody else especially during this time period. As a driver, I’m open to any other opportunities that could come my way in the XFINITY Series. We kinda have to table this No. 89 program until qualifying returns, where we can qualify our way into the show and earn all the prize money. Hopefully, I can pick up some driving opportunities when qualifying returns. I would love to return to the 89 if the opportunities allow. If there’s sponsors that want to jump on board, contacting me or Shepherd Ventures to line that up is the route to go. ▶ YOU AND YOUR WIFE KATIE WELCOMED YOUR SON ARLO A FEW MONTHS AGO. WITH THREE CHILDREN, HOW HAS IT BEEN TO JUGGLE YOUR RACING LIFE WITH YOUR FAMILY LIFE? It’s been busy! I don’t know if the quarantine has been good or bad for that. I think if anything, it’s been good. We had a baby and went right into quarantine. So, we’ve just been home. We’ve gotten a lot done at home. I’ve been able to stream and do iRacing and go upstairs and spend time with the kids. For the most part, my wife is an all-star. She’s been tackling the family duties better than anybody.

CREW MEMBER PROFILE
A LIFE IN RACING LINKER HAS ALWAYS ENJOYED COMPETITION IN SPORTS BY BEN WHITE
B
randon Linker, front tire changer for Wood Brothers Racing and driver Matt Dibenedetto, was introduced to NASCAR through his parents, one of whom has very close ties to the sport. “My stepfather, Mike Toomes, is related to Richard Petty (a nephew of Richard Petty’s mother, the late Elizabeth Toomes Petty),” Linker said. “I started watching races around 1988 or 1989, somewhere in that time frame. I know my father hasn’t missed a Daytona 500 since I’ve been around. I attended several Daytona 500s before I got into racing.” Linker graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy in 2003 after receiving a scholarship to play baseball and soccer there. He also received a scholarship to play baseball at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro but an arm injury changed his path during his sophomore year. Linker graduated from UNCG with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality Management in 2007 and managed restaurants after finishing college. During a chance meeting with Cup Series crew member Justin Prevette, a friendship emerged. Prevette knew of Linker’s athleticism and felt he would be great as a crew member himself. A tryout with Ganassi Racing in 2013 led to a development role and then a spot on the over the wall crew. Linker joined Wood Brothers Racing in 2018 through an alliance with Team Penske. Each time DiBenedetto comes down pit road, the adrenaline kicks the team into high gear.

even-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty is thought of as one of greatest sports athletes of all time. The winner of 200 Cup Series races from 1958 through 1992 has been considered a cornerstone of the sport for over seven decades. The native of Randleman, N.C., attended NASCAR’s inaugural Strictly Stock race in Charlotte in 1949 as a 13-year-old. He watched his father, three-time Cup Series champion Lee Petty, compete in the race. Petty Enterprises collected 268 Cup Series wins before being closed in 2008. The organization also won two additional Daytona 500s victories with Lee Petty in 1959 and Pete Hamilton in 1970. Richard Petty Motorsports was originally founded as part of Evernham Motorsports in 2000 by former crew chief Ray Evernham, entering full-time competition as a two-car operation in 2001. The RPM moniker emerged through a series of team ownerships including

OWNER SPOTLIGHT Gillett Evernham Motorsports in 2007 with George Gillett and Robert Yates Racing in 2010. In November of 2010, an investment group including Andrew M. Murstein and his Medallion Financial Corporation, Douglas G. Bergeron and Petty bought Gillett’s racing assets to officially form RPM. Bergeron sold his interest in the team in 2014, making Petty, Murstein, and Medallion Financial partners owners of the team with Petty’s name at the forefront. RPM currently fields the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro fulltime for Bubba Wallace in Cup Series competition and has a partnership alliance with Richard Childress Racing. As co-owners of the organization dating back to 2000, 20 victories have been recorded with drivers Bill Elliott, Kasey Kahne, Marcos Ambrose, Jeremy Mayfield, Elliott Sadler, A.J. Allmendinger and Aric Almirola. Petty, considered one of NASCAR’s greatest ambassadors, has been elected to the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, International Motorsports Hall of Fame, North Carolina Auto

Racing Hall of Fame, and also the North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He also serves as Chairman of the North Carolina Motorsports Association and is an inaugural inductee in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. At age 83, one would think Petty might possibly retire and slow down for the first time in his life. Today, he oversees the operations of RRM as well as Petty’s Garage, a highperformance speed shop located on the grounds of the former Petty Enterprises operation. When asked in recent years about the possibility of retirement from the sport, Petty replied, “What in the world would I do if I retired? This is all I’ve ever known and all I’ve ever done, you know what I mean? It all goes back to when Daddy raced and me and (cousin and eight-time Cup Series champion crew chief) Dale Inman helping to get his race cars ready to race as teenagers. That had to be done before we could do anything else. Then I started driving race cars for a lot of years with help from a lot of people. I can’t imagine not being at the race track. I’m so thankful that I can still do it.”

DRIVER Q&A
A LITTLE HOPE GOES A LONG WAY JD MOTORSPORTS XFINITY SERIES ROOKIE HAS BIG PLANS BY JOSEPH WOLK IN
In Jesse Little’s rookie season in the XFINITY Series, he isn’t shy about his expectations. The son of former Cup Series racer Chad Little is ready to make a name for himself, competing full-time for JD Motorsports in 2020 with plenty of goals to reach. ▶ WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE TO START YOUR JOURNEY WITH JD MOTORSPORTS? “It was great to start off with. We learned a lot and we were growing a lot as a team. We hit the pause button for a while. It’s unique and almost like another offseason after barely getting the season started. I’m excited to keep going.” ▶ WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS THIS YEAR? “I want to get the most out of the car that I can in every race with the equipment that Brian Berry and Johnny Davis can provide me. I think we have a shot at making the playoffs. The 12th spot could be ours if we play our cards right. If we’re cautiously aggressive throughout the season, I think it’s a great goal.” ▶ HOW DO YOU COMPARE YOURSELF TO ROSS CHASTAIN TO SEE HOW YOU CAN GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS CAR? “That’s my game plan. I’m modeling every bit I can after Ross in the sense of getting the most out of this and doing my best to make the playoffs. I 0 3 4

want to turn heads. I’m going to racetracks that I’ve never been to this year, like Darlington, and my first laps will be at the wave of the green flag. It’s a complete unknown to me.” ▶ HOW DIFFERENT IS IT TO BE ABLE TO FOCUS ON RACING RATHER THAN THE OWNERSHIP SIDE? “When my uncle and I had our truck team, I was wearing a lot of different hats. It didn’t take away from driving, but it did make it harder to focus on that. Now, with the XFINITY stuff, it’s allowed me to channel my attention to being a better driver.”
