BRISTOL REVIEW: BUBBA WALLACE IS NO KYLE BUSCH In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his race review and analysis of the Food City Showdown this weekend. This is the third week of NASCAR’s foray into iRacing esports, and with virtual Bristol being notorious for tons of wrecks, fans were on edge to see what the ontrack product would be like. We didn’t have to wait long to get our first real taste. Eric gives us his take on the now0 0 4

infamous Bubba Wallace rage quit, as well as some of the background on the differences between real Bristol and virtual Bristol that might shed some light on how the cautions start flying. But that’s not all, Eric also has some thoughts on the new dual Heat race qualifying format, and of course he puts it all on his patented Groovy Gauge. Watch the episode to find out where it ranked!

THINGS WE LEARNED AT BRISTOL (IRACING STYLE) FOOD CITY SHOWDOWN BRINGS OUT TEMPER TANTRUMS It was only a matter of time. Following strong runs at the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway, William Byron executed a flawless race at the virtual Bristol Motor Speedway. Winning the first qualifying heat and starting on the pole for the Food City Showdown, Byron led 116 of the 150 laps to score his first eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series race of the season. Alongside Byron’s victory, there’s at least five things that we can recall and ruminate over following Sunday’s Food City Showdown at the virtual Bristol. BY ROB TIONGSON

LARSON AND SUAREZ WIND UP IN DOGHOUSE
I
t’s safe to say that this is more than virtual racing for drivers like Kyle Larson and Daniel Suarez. Admittedly, this is about the only kind of motorsports competition that we’ll see until things in the real world settle down. Still, for fans who perceive iRacing as merely a video game, think again. Tempers flare at Bristol Motor Speedway in any rendition. However, it certainly got the best of Kyle Larson and Daniel Suarez, especially on Lap 72. As both tangled on the frontstretch, the two decided to engage in bumper car action. Clearly, their spat was not going to end well so iRacing officials dropped the hammer for both drivers, and like Sir Topham Hatt with Diesel the Devious Engine, they were sent packing. For Suarez, it’s his second straight disqualification in as many weeks. Will the Easter weekend reprieve cool these frayed tempers before Richmond in two weeks?

NEMECHEK FINISHES STRONG SECOND IN UNIQUE FASHION
O
K, so it wasn’t as extreme as Matt DiBenedetto racing in his boxers. Still, John Hunter Nemechek scoring a strong second without socks seems to be setting a trend for the Pro Invitational Series races. It’s well known that Denny Hamlin won Homestead without socks and Jimmie Johnson has competed in virtual races without a pair of socks. Maybe Gold Toe needs to sponsor Nemechek with the next outing for the Pro Invitational Series. All told, Nemechek truly put together a strong race on behalf of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford Mustang team. Nemechek earned the second spot with an impressive victory in Heat 2 by besting Ryan Preece with a margin of 0.006 seconds. Carrying over that speed into the main event, Nemechek displayed a rather cool and calm demeanor all race long. Perhaps this young racer emerges victorious in two weeks at the virtual Richmond Raceway.

THE ENTERTAINING, FRUSTRATING RACE FOR CLINT BOWYER
I
n Boston, Red Sox fans were used to the often-beloved saying of “Manny Being Manny.” After all, Manny Ramirez and his antics were as expected as millennials expecting World Series championships after 2004. Well, NASCAR has its own version of Manny Ramirez in the form of Clint Bowyer. Often, he does some crazy things that he typically can get away with that others would get called out on immediately. During Sunday’s Bristol mayhem, Bowyer raced like the wrecking ball from Miley Cyrus’ song from 2013, especially in the second qualifying heat and the first portion of the Food City Showdown’s main event. Ultimately, Bowyer’s carnage shook up the starting grid and running order of the race. Then again, he raced with this series’ spirit and original intent in mind by having fun. When we truly return to on-track action, will his crew chief Johnny Klausmeier need to have ice cream?

WALLACE’S RAGE QUIT EARNS IRE OF BLUE-EMU
P
erhaps the one driver who likely earned nearly the same amount of attention as race winner William Byron was Bubba Wallace. Unlike Byron, Wallace earned the spotlight for the wrong reasons. While this is a hot topic and pressing issue that gamers and racers will attest to for as long as competition exists, Wallace’s actions and outbursts on social media earned the wrath of sponsor Blue-Emu. As of press time, it seems like Blue-Emu was very unhappy with Wallace’s displeasure during and after his brief outing at the virtual Bristol Motor Speedway. Wallace exhausted his resets and his car was torn up after the Lap 11 incident with Clint Bowyer. Following the crash, Wallace, prior to ending his stream, said, “That’s why I don’t take this seriously. Bye, bye. Peace out!” Virtual or not, Blue-Emu’s tweet seemed to indicate that they didn’t tolerate Wallace’s rage quit at Bristol.

BYRON SCHOOLS FIELD WITH BEAUTIFUL BRISTOL DOMINANCE
I
t’s no secret that William Byron’s a heckuva racer in the real world and in iRacing. Furthermore, it’s no surprise that Byron finally won a Pro Invitational Series race after flirting with victory at Homestead and Texas. In addition, he’s been a contender in the Replacement Series races on Podium eSports. Taking a page from Darrell Waltrip’s winning ways at Bristol Motor Speedway, particularly during the mid-1980’s, Byron absolutely schooled the field in his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro. Not even a pit stop that took him from the lead during the midpoint of this race stopped him from returning to the front of the pack. Clearly, the COVID-19 crisis isn’t slowing Byron down from keeping sharp, focused, and fast on any kind of track. One must wonder how momentum from the Pro Invitational Series translates to real-life racing when we eventually return to the asphalt arenas in good time.

NASCAR MADE SENSIBLE DECISION IN DELAYING GEN-7
The biggest news from the NASCAR world last week was that NASCAR has delayed the official rollout of its Gen-7 car until 2022 due to issues associated with COVID-19. While putting the car’s debut on hold isn’t optimal, it wouldn’t make sense to race with a vehicle that hasn’t been adequately tested. Plus, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the current Gen-6 model, which has been around since 2013. If nothing else, waiting a year on the Gen-7 will help teams save money for now in a tough economic climate. JA RED TURNER ▶ JIMMIE JOHNSON SHOULD EXTEND CAREER ANOTHER YEAR Jimmie Johnson recently told USA Today that he might consider forgoing his plans to retire at season’s end. While the seventime champ made no guarantee of this happening, let’s hope it does — especially if NASCAR has to shorten its 2020 schedule because of the COVID-19 pandemic that’s already forced multiple postponements. Along with being one of the best drivers in NASCAR history, Johnson is also one of the nicest drivers in the sport today, and he deserves an appropriate farewell tour. If that means him returning to race in 2021, NASCAR would be better for it.
■■ NASCAR will delay the debut of the Next Gen-7 until 2022.

▶ LET’S NOT GET SO BENT OUT OF SHAPE ABOUT IRACING Sunday’s eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series race at virtual Bristol Motor Speedway took an unexpected twist after Bubba Wallace tangled with Clint Bowyer on the track. “That’s why I don’t take this s*** serious,” Wallace said. “Peace out,” he added, before turning off his simulator. But Blue-Emu — a pain relief brand that is both a real-life and virtual sponsor of Wallace — took umbrage with his reaction. “GTK where you stand,” Blue-Emu tweeted from its official account. “Bye bye Bubba. We’re interested in drivers, not quitters.” Perhaps Wallace and the Blue-Emu folks should both lighten up. This iRacing stuff is supposed to be fun, right? .

week after a late-race bump-and-run pass ended William Byron’s hope of a win in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, the Hendrick Motorsports driver who cut his teeth in the virtual racing world dominated a crash-filled Food City Showdown at virtual Bristol Motor Speedway. For the second week in a row, the driver of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet dominated in the virtual racing series that is following the NASCAR Cup Series schedule that has been paused due the COVID-19 pandemic. But this time, Byron was able to pull away from John Hunter Nemechek and Matt DiBenedetto during a restart with four laps to go and drive away with the win after leading 116 laps in the race.
ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: APR. 6, 2020
Byron admitted that in the moment, losing the way he did at virtual Texas the week before stung – even though it wasn’t a “real” race – and makes this win a little sweeter. “I mean, obviously when the race is going, I think anybody would be dumb to tell you that they don’t take it seriously because it’s a race, but it took me probably an hour after the race to really cool off and realize that I was just racing on the computer and I could get over it.” “For me mentally, I try to treat it as a race when the race is going on,” Byron added. “But I think that it was just frustrating because we hadn’t closed one out yet and we had led the most laps, so to finally close the deal this week was really awesome.” This week’s race had a new look for the Pro Invitational Series as it was limited to a select group of 32 current and former Cup Series drivers. A pair of 50-lap heat races set the field for the main 150-lap feature, which had Busch Pole Award winner Byron and Nemechek on the front row after winning their respective heats. The race had a total of 12 cautions, as the particularly challenging virtual Bristol Motor Speedway stumped several of the drivers who have seen success at
the real venue, including brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch, who have combined for 14 Cup Series wins at the track. Kyle finished 18th after bringing out the final caution of the day following contact with Ryan Preece near the front of the field, and Kurt was 19th. The race was not without intensity, as one would expect at a short track like Bristol. Daniel Suarez and Kyle Larson were blackflagged and parked for intentional contact on the track. And Bubba Wallace disconnected early on following an on-track incident. “I think the easy excuse is to say, oh, it’s a game and all that, but at the end of the day, everyone is racing, and seeing how much time some guys have put in, I know that it means something to them,” the race-winning Byron said of the hard feelings on the track. “You’ve got to race. It’s race craft, and I feel like race craft is the same no matter what you’re racing; whether it’s on a computer or at the dirt track or at an asphalt race, it’s the same.” Nemechek, last week’s winner Timmy Hill, and the winner of the first race of the virtual series, Denny Hamlin, finished door handle to door handle to door handle at the line to place second, third and

ENASCAR fourth, respectively. Hill has now posted a top-three finish in each of the three races in the Pro Invitational Series after starting off with a third-place result at virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway. Hill, Garrett Smithley (ninth today at Bristol) and Ryan Preece (sixth today) are the only drivers who have recorded top-10 finishes in each of the races. The win was particularly meaningful for Byron, who used iRacing to get his foot in the door in real-world racing, as it puts him one victory shy of 1,500 iRacing wins. His prowess behind the wheel in the computer-based racing helped him work his way up through the development levels before landing a fulltime NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series ride in 2016. Byron still uses it to fine-tune his racing skills. “I try to use iRacing because it improves my race craft, and I feel like we’ve been doing a good job of promoting it the right way. The races that you can practice on kind of help improve my race craft, and that’s why I use it to try to help me on the real car.” And until he’s able to apply those skills in the “real cars” again, Byron will continue to go after wins in the virtual world.

Bubba got called out by Blue-Emu Twitter
As mentioned in the Five Things column, Bubba Wallace’s Bristol misdeeds prompted Blue-Emu’s unpleasant tweets following the Food City Showdown. Fans wondered about the last time that a driver or team member quit during an actual race with sewall-graham recalling Pat Tryson departing from Geoffrey Bodine’s No. 7 QVC Ford team during the Bristol Night Race in 1997. Some fans expressed concern that the element of fun, the original intent of the Pro Invitational Series, disappeared because of this moment.

IRacing Should Be a Televised Winter Series After COVID
Seems like the perfect idea for Winter, particularly from the end of College Football till Daytona when there’s a lot of empty space on FS1 and NBCSN. Airlineguy1 posed an interesting thought for a “Winter Heat” series when real-life racing wraps up its season. With iRacing and virtual racing gaining more on-air television time in addition to streaming on a platform like Twitch, fans ponder about the prospects of an offseason iRacing series during the winter. While fans will likely embrace the return of on-track competition, it’d be neat to see the Coca-Cola iRacing Series drivers duke it out in front of a TV audience. 0 2 8
