Student Becomes the Teacher at Darlington In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp gives us his review and analysis of the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, including top finishers, point standings, and the return of the Groovy Gauge. First up we have the amazing win by No. 20 driver Erik Jones, just ahead of Kyle Larson following their spectacular battle. This win for Jones now means that every driver on Joe Gibbs Racing has earned a win in the 2019 season. But it wasn’t all good news. Jimmie Johnson, 0 0 4

after racking up points early on in the race, an unfortunate incident still leaves him 18 points outside the bubble. Eric talks us through what needs to happen for Johnson to remain a contender in 2019. And that’s not at all! This episode also marks the return of the Groovy Gauge after its absence the last few weeks of the season. Where did Darlington rank, especially in light of the full 2019 aero package on display? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

rain delay forced Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway to begin about four hours later than scheduled, but this race — which ended around 2 a.m. Monday — was certainly worth the wait. Following are five key takeaways from the track “Too Tough to Tame,” which played host to the penultimate race of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regular season. By Jared Turner

This Was Just What Clint Bowyer Needed

C

oming into the Darlington race weekend, Clint Bowyer was in the unenviable position of being the first driver on the wrong side of the playoff cutline. Now instead of being two points in arrears of the 16th and final playoff spot, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver is in 15th place and eight points to the good of Ryan Newman and Daniel Suarez, who are now tied for the final playoff berth. While eight points are hardly enough of a buffer for Bowyer to relax or feel comfortable going into the final regular season race, a sixth-place finish at Darlington put him in a considerably better position to qualify for the post-season. It also didn’t hurt Bowyer that Newman and Suarez had tougher nights, at one point actually making contact with each other that sent Newman for a spin and left the Roush Fenway Racing irate. Meanwhile, Bowyer understandably couldn’t have been much happier with the final outcome.

There’s Simply No Quit In Matt DiBenedetto

W

hat else is there to say that hasn’t already been said about Matt DiBenedetto? With an impressive eighth-place finish at Darlingon, the Leavine Family Racing driver has now scored six top-10 finishes — including three top fives — in his last 10 starts. That’s beyond impressive for a driver who is competing for a single-car team — even if that team does have a technical affiliation with powerhouse Joe Gibbs Racing. The race at Darlington followed DiBenedetto’s career-best second-place finish two weekends earlier at Bristol, where DiBenedetto competed for the first time since learning that Leavine would not retain his services for the 2020 season. While DiBenedetto’s Darlington result wasn’t as strong as his Bristol outcome, it was nonetheless notable, especially given Darlington’s reputation as the toughest track in NASCAR. Looking for a driver on a mission to prove his worth to potential 2020 suitors? Look no further than the underdog driver of the No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota.

Kyle Busch Can’t Be But Too Upset With Third

N

o driver in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series dislikes losing more than Kyle Busch, but the Joe Gibbs Racing driver couldn’t be but so displeased with his third-place finish at Darlington. While Busch certainly would have preferred standing in Victory Lane at night’s end, the driver of the No. 18 Toyota had reason to celebrate, nevertheless, as he officially clinched the Monster Energy Series’ 2019 “regular season championship.” As a result, Busch will carry 15 bonus points into the opening playoff round and any subsequent rounds — other than the championship round at Homestead-Miami Speedway, if he makes it that far. Finishing third at Darlington wasn’t what Busch wanted, but capturing the regular-season title certainly softened the blow. “I’m glad we were able to clinch the regular season championship tonight,” Busch said. “Those extra playoff points can be a huge benefit in the early rounds of the playoffs and provide a bit of a buffer should something go wrong.”

Even On A Good Night, Jimmie Johnson Can’t Catch A Break

O

n many occasions this season, Jimmie Johnson has posted a not-so-great finish because his No. 48 Chevrolet simply lacked the speed or adjustability to keep up with the frontrunners. That wasn’t the case at Darlington, however, as the seven-time champion of NASCAR’s premier series flexed his proverbial muscle early and looked poised for a top-five finish before suffering some damage in a multi-car accident not of his own making. As a result, Johnson finished 16th and remained 18th in the standings. To avoid missing the playoffs for the first time in his career, he will likely need to win this weekend’s regular-season finale at Indianapolis. “I had at least 15 years with a lot of luck on my side, seven years of championships, and having two or three bad (years) is just part of it,” Johnson said before leaving Darlington. “I was running fourth when that accident took place in Turn 3, and I just had nowhere to go.”

Erik Jones Likely Sealed The Deal On Where He Will Spend 2020

L

ooking to solidify where he will spend the 2020 season, Erik Jones went out and made a huge statement with his Darlington victory — which came, coincidentally, in his 100th NASCAR premier series start. By virtue of his victory at the track “Too Tough to Tame,” Jones joined his three fellow Joe Gibbs Racing teammates as a 2019 race winner and formally punched his ticket into the playoffs. But more important than any of that, Jones put the cherry on top of what is reportedly a done deal for him to remain with JGR in 2020. If there was any lingering uncertainty about his standing with JGR for next season, Jones likely took care of it by prevailing in one of the biggest races of the season. While JGR has yet to officially announce a contract extension for Jones, all signs suggest he will be back in the No. 20 Toyota for at least another year and possibly even longer.

Rusty Reacts to Jones’ Win at Darlington We’re back this week in Rusty’s garage for his report on the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The Rusty Report not only has the breakdown on Erik Jones incredible win over the Kyles - Larson and Busch respectively, but also the incredible hype surrounding the race this weekend. This year’s Southern 500 featured a sold out crowd at Darlington Raceway. Most fans don’t need it explained why that’s so important to the sport, so Rusty gives us the context surrounding the college tailgate-like atmosphere the race 0 1 8

has become. What’s more, Rusty explains what the race means in the full 2019 season, and the trajectory the sport is currently on. The highlight for Rusty, though, was the return of the old school NASCAR feeling, with a green flag finish, and NASCAR race officials, from the point of view of the crowd, letting the race play out on its own after the rain delay. Which drivers still have a lot to worry about in 2019? And what does this mean for the rest of the season? Watch Rusty’s full reaction in this episode above to find out!

Just Sayin’ Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fifth in the XFINITY Series race at Darlington Speedway.

Dale Jr. Is Still Mr. Popularity By Jared Turner

I

n the days leading up to his scheduled cameo start in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Darlington, Dale Earnhardt Jr. readily admitted that he had no real expectations. After all, he hasn’t raced on a consistent basis since 2017 — his final season as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver — and hadn’t been in a race car at all since September 2018, when he made a one-off appearance in the Xfinity Series event at Richmond Raceway. Saturday was Earnhardt Jr.’s first and only scheduled outing of 2019 with the JR Motorsports organization that he co-owns, and the third-generation driver couldn’t have picked a more difficult place to get back behind the wheel. Known as the track “Too Tough to Tame,” Darlington has rightfully earned a reputation as the least forgiving of all NASCAR tracks, which makes it a less-than-ideal venue for someone who hasn’t raced in a while to decide to make a rare appearance. Further complicating matters for Earnhardt Jr. was the fact that he was just a little more than two weeks removed from surviving a plane crash (yes, you read that correctly) that left him with a

0 2 0

Darlington rearview: september 3, 2019

sore back and that undoubtedly has led to no dearth of emotional distress in the days that have followed — especially since his wife, Amy, and daughter, Isla, were also aboard the plane, which became completely engulfed in flames just seconds after their harrowing escape. Putting this trauma behind him at least for a day, Earnhardt Jr. finished an impressive fifth, but from the crowd reaction at Darlington, you would have thought he’d won the race. Clearly, Earnhardt Jr. is still physically capable of jumping in a race car and being competitive, and no amount of trauma was going to stop him from doing what he wanted to do. He’s still adored and beloved by the fans, too — probably even more so than he was less than three weeks ago.

That Jones Boy Makes Good at Darlington Danny B Talks, a regular fixture of the online NASCAR community, is back with a new video in his popular Need a Minute series, this time looking back at the events of the past few weeks after his absence. First up, Danny pays tribute to a couple standout losses suffered by motorsports in the recent days. From Formula 2 to even record-setting land-jets, Danny honors the memories of the lost, as well as offers a reminder on how truly dangerous these sports can be. Following that, Danny returns to the 0 2 2

usual positive news beat. Homestead-Miami, for example, has recently announced new renovations coming to the track, specifically a huge man-made lake in the infield, along with an artificial beach to create a vacation-like party atmosphere. We also have exciting sponsorship announcements for No. 95 driver Matt DiBenedetto, who certainly needed the lift after his close call at Bristol weeks back. We also have Danny’s take on the return of Dale Jr., Cole Custer, and the drama around Darlington. Check it out!

PEAK Series Readies for the Playoff Rumble Team Dillon eSports Steals the Regular Season Championship

By: M atteo M archeschi

O

n Tuesday, August 20th, the eNASCAR Peak Antifreeze iRacing Series headed to the Last Great Colosseum at Bristol Motor Speedway to conclude their regular season. The race started with Renegades driver Corey Vincent on the pole, with G2 eSports pilot Keegan Leahy beside him. Leahy prevented Vincent from leading even a single lap, instead leading the first 43 himself. Nathan Lyon, driver for Letarte eSports,

0 3 0

grabbed the lead from Leahy with Burton-Kligerman eSports driver Logan Clampitt in tow. Lyon would lead the most laps of anyone, 118 of 250, dominating the middle of the race. However, staying out on a lap 163 caution would end his chances for a win, as his old tires hurt him badly on the long run, ending up 20th. Clint Bowyer Racing driver Casey Kirwin took advantage of Lyon’s downfall, grabbing the lead away from Lyon on lap 173. Kirwin looked to be

Darlington rearview: september 3, 2019

in control, but second-place Zack Novak closed in, and, with under 30 laps remaining, capitalized on a passing opportunity as leader Kirwin slowed to avoid a wreck in front of him. Unfortunately for Kirwin, the caution didn’t come out. However, with only five laps remaining, Kirwin was able to use lap traffic to get back by Novak, and would keep it for the remainder of the race, driving away from Novak to capture his first career Peak Series win. Despite not winning a race all season long, it was Team Dillon eSports driver Blake Reynolds who took the regular season championship, beating the likes of Ryan Luza and Keegan Leahy. Also playoff bound are Zack Novak, Bobby Zalenski, Garrett Lowe, Jimmy Mullis, and Michael Conti. No team was able to get both their drivers into the playoffs, and no independent driver was able to advance to the postseason. Look for our Darlington recap in the ROAR Indianapolis Rearview, coming out on Monday, September 9th!

The calendar has turned to fall and that means the weather is finally cooling down. However, even as the temperatures chill, a handful of NASCAR-related storylines are sizzling. These are five hot topics that everyone will be discussing during the final months of the year.

1

No Foreseeable End to Joe Gibbs Racing’s Dominance: JGR driver Denny Hamlin kicked off the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season with a huge and emotional victory in the Daytona 500. Twentyfour races into the schedule, JGR drivers had accounted for exactly half of all Monster Energy Series race wins. Arguably just as impressive was the fact that those victories were evenly distributed among three of JGR’s four drivers – Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Hamlin.

2

A 2020 Jimmie Johnson Farewell Tour? Jimmie Johnson is in a threeyear contract with Hendrick Motorsports that runs through the 2020 season. Will the seventime NASCAR premier series champion renew for one or more additional seasons, or will 2020 be his farewell tour? As of late August, Johnson had offered no indication of his plans. Forty-four years old as of Sept. 17, Johnson is the oldest active full-time Monster Energy Series driver.

The Continued Emergence of the Young Guns: The season hasn’t been the greatest for NASCAR’s so-called “young guns,” but it hasn’t been bad either. Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, Erik Jones, William Byron, Daniel Suarez and Matt DiBenedetto – all drivers central to NASCAR’s youth movement – have all enjoyed some terrific moments. Bowman, Byron, Suarez and DiBenedetto, in particular, have displayed marked improvement over 2018 when it was rare for any of them to contend for wins.

5

Possible Retirement for Kurt Busch: Leading up to this season, Kurt Busch signed only a one-year agreement with Chip Ganassi Racing and made no attempt to hide the possibility that he might not race beyond 2019. But after a playoff-clinching victory in July at Kentucky Speedway where he edged younger brother Kyle in an epic lastlap duel, Busch acknowledged that his overall successful season to date had led him to seriously contemplate the possibility of racing at least one more year although a deal was far from done.

A Majorly Revamped 2020 Schedule: It’s certainly not too early to look ahead to the 2020 schedule, which will look vastly different than this season. Among the most notable changes for NASCAR’s premier series will be Homestead-Miami Speedway moving from the season’s final race to Race Six while Atlanta Motor Speedway moves from Week Two to Week Five. Martinsville Speedway is taking over the Mother’s Day weekend date previously occupied by Kansas Speedway, while the first Kansas race has been pushed back to the last weekend in May. Rather than making two trips to Pocono Raceway, NASCAR’s premier series will visit the “Tricky Triangle” only once – in late June – and run two races on back-to-back days.

Headlights are like the teeth of an automobile, and over time they start to discolor and become unsightly and unsafe.

Bright, Smiling Magic Clear Lens Auto headlights are primarily made from polycarbonate plastic, making the lenses vulnerable to sunlight, acid, rain, dirt, and debris. Inevitably all headlights will gradually become unsightly, cloudy and dull, reducing visibility and creating dangerous nighttime headlight illumination. Magic Clear Lens is a cleaning, preservation, and maintenance treatment that instantly reveals a bright and clear headlight. Not only will your headlights look exceptionally better, but nighttime driving will be safer.

he Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® dubbed “Larry’s Lemonade” was first concocted in the backyard of none other than the man himself “Larry”. This local favorite began gaining ground throughout the markets of Hampton Roads, Virginia all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After much success, excitement, and incredible growth Larry was hit with the terrible news that he had cancer. With family, friends, and his Lemon Crew beside him Larry reminded them of their company motto “When Life Handed Us Lemons, We Turned Them into Beer”. Larry took on cancer with his unrelenting “Thumbs Up” attitude and determination and beat cancer reminding us to never quit! So, whether you’re in a peak or valley of life Larry would like to remind you that “When Life Hands You Lemons, Let Larry Make The Beer.” Look for The Original Larry’s Hard Lemonade® in a store near you and check us out at www.THELARRYSLEMONADE.com

TM

msg: making racing safer By dan guttenplan

A

cknowledged as one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Dr. Jason Cormier has helped MSG provide a comprehensive, grassroots marketing campaign focused on preventative health care education and wellness training. With an emphasis to educate and engage race fans in their growing role as health care consumers, the objective is to influence behavioral changes, to provide racing’s brand-loyal audience with the medical knowledge to make informed, preventative decisions that directly affect the wellness of their families. As the NASCAR schedule turns to the hotter summer months, Cormier continues to stress the importance of hydration. A dehydrated athlete is unable to maintain peak levels of focus or mental health in a race car. “There are a couple of signs that heat is taking a toll on an athlete,” Cormier noted. “The driver’s reaction slows down

0 6 0

Darlington rearview: september 3, 2019

because the brain becomes dehydrated. Once they’re losing reaction time and cognitive ability, the mental ability declines and they just want to get out of the car as they continue to compete. Recognize that competing at this level, without proper hydration, creates an extremely miserable situation for the driver athlete. Drivers have reported that not only do they want the race to end, they start thinking of the last race and there’s a predictability that it’s coming on again.” A good rule of thumb for staying hydrated is to drink at least half of your body weight (measure in kilograms) in ounces of water. Cormier says that process must start days – not hours – before competition. “It should really start three days prior to a race,” he said. “They’re not camels, so they can’t just store water. People

health and wellness want to load up on vitamin water, but that has 32 grams of sugar particularly fructose. Pedialyte is not indicated as a true hydration tool. What they should be doing is staying away from carbonated drinks and processed foods, while maintaining a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables.” Cormier believes the importance of hydration ties nicely with an undervalued aspect of performing in a race car – mental wellness. Not enough attention is paid to ensuring the drivers are getting behind the wheel in peak mental condition. Research on the effects of heat on the brain, from both Harvard and Stanford University recently revealed both an increase cognitive difficulties as well as an increase in the frequency of suicide. “We should be studying all aspects of a person’s mental condition,” Cormier said.

“When was the last episode? What was the cause? What were some other outside factors? What are they doing for self-help? They’re driving 200 mph when they have a lot of other things on their minds. They could have PTSD, bipolar diagnosis, anxiety … we don’t address that enough.” Cormier believes anyone struggling with mental health issues should surround him or herself with positive energy. “It’s also important they’re not engaging in risky behavior off the track. For example, alcohol abuse, frequenting bars or taking drugs,” he said. “Meditation is great, yoga is great, but having a positive circle around you is also great. Social media can be a positive in many ways, but we need to control that aspect of our lives. Books that are inspirational or help books can be beneficial. Those things help a great deal.”

An MSG Partner – Brain Armor Motorsports Safety Group is planning to partner with The Healthy Brain Co. on a mission to positively impact the health and wellness of the brain – 86 billion neurons at a time. Brain Armor products are clinically proven, evidencedbased nutritional formula designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through

improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. Dr. Julian Bailes has helped design the product, which includes some of the most

Darlington rearview: september 3, 2019

researched and evidencebased ingredients on the planet: DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids. “Julian Bailes did the initial studies, which broke barriers for some unexpected and very promising results,” Dr. Jason Cormier said. “The elevated dosages can help support neurons and repair certain injuries that occur in the brain. Some drivers use it; it’s utilized in the NFL, NCAA, NHL and some military as well.”
