HISTORIC MARTINSVILLE NIGHT RACE REVIEW In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through his entire race review and analysis of last night’s race at Martinsville. That’s right, “last night” at Martinsville, as it was the historic first ever night race under the lights. That meant that not only were the teams hitting the track with no practice or qualifying time, but they were also racing under new weather and temperature conditions. How’d they do? Eric takes us through the whole field of 0 0 4

drivers, and gives us his insights on why the Penske Fords are doing so well, as well as why some of the Toyotas are underperforming this season on the flip side. Does it make for more exciting on track action? Eric give us his take. Plus he has some follow ups on the Denny Hamlin vs Corey LaJoie beef after last night’s race, and he puts the whole thing on the patented Groovy Gauge. Find out where the historic Martinsville night race lands on this episode of Out of the Groove!

LESSONS LEARNED AT MARTINSVILLE MARTIN TRUEX, JR. CLOCKS ANOTHER MARTINSVILLE WIN As one of the most anticipated races of the NASCAR Cup Series season, Wednesday night’s Blue-Emu Maximum Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway didn’t disappoint. While Round 11 of the year would’ve been even better with fans in the grandstands, the on-track action was intense. Drivers traded paint while brakes glowed in that familiar cherry red color. Certainly, Martinsville treated past Cup champions kindly with Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson winning the first two stages. However, Martin Truex, Jr. prevailed when it counted. Now, here’s the five pivotal takeaways from Martinsville! BY ROB TIONGSON

A TALE OF TWO RACES FOR JOHNSON

H

eading into Wednesday night’s action at the paperclip, Jimmie Johnson seemed prime on winning his 10th grandfather clock. Despite starting 21st as a result of a random qualifying draw, the seven-time Cup Series champion quickly made his way into the top-10, placing third in Stage 1. In Stage 2, Johnson was like vintage wine as he piloted his No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro that seemingly kept getting stronger and faster. Taking the victory in this stage of the race, it appeared as if Johnson and crew chief Cliff Daniels finally found the missing puzzle pieces for a return to Victory Lane. Instead, it was a struggle in the final stage of the race, as Johnson slipped from the lead and nearly out of the top-10 in the final laps. Ultimately, Johnson finished 10th, a disappointing finish considering how fast his car was in the early going. On to Homestead-Miami Speedway.

TEAM PENSKE TRIO SHOWCASES MIGHTY MARTINSVILLE MUSCLE

I

t’s hard to not view the Team Penske trio as three brothers who don’t mind giving each other hell while being supportive to each other in the heat of the battle. In this case, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano have a lot to be proud about after they showcased their mighty Martinsville muscle as they respectively placed second, third, and fourth. At various points in this race, each driver made a compelling case for the win. Not to mention, each overcame some form of adversity at this tough paperclip-shaped speedway. As pointed out during the telecast, Blaney likely passed more drivers than anyone else on the track, or basically the number of times that someone wondered if Chicago’s Peter Cetera had a “dual voice.” Meanwhile, Keselowski and Logano demonstrated why they’re past Cup champions by resorting to their guile and sage experiences to bring home solid top-five results.

A FORGETTABLE NIGHT RACE FOR KYLE BUSCH

R

aise your hand if you thought Kyle Busch would finish 19th, one lap down at Martinsville. Anybody? Bueller? OK, anybody who truly follows NASCAR likely had Busch as their pick to win the Blue-Emu Maximum Relief 500. Instead, it’s a forgettable night at Martinsville for the two-time Cup Series champion. It didn’t seem as if Busch and crew chief Adam Stevens dialed their No. 18 car to perfection, or at least, close to the level that’s expected from this usually dangerous team. At one point, Busch was multiple laps down, an uncommon scenario for the driver who’s taken to Martinsville with confidence. Typically, Busch and Stevens aren’t satisfied if they’ve left a track without the trophy. To say the least, they’ll shake this off, but this is their fifth finish outside of the top-10 in 11 races. Next up is Homestead, the site of Kyle Busch’s most recent Cup win.

BUBBA WALLACE IMPRESSES WITH SOLID MARTINSVILLE SHOWING

T

here’s an old saying that leaders are born, not made. If this saying is true, well, it’s safe to say that Bubba Wallace was born to be a strong leader as he’s shown in the past week and a half. Advocating for changes within the world of NASCAR, Wallace’s words and impact with the series and industry have been heard. From the sport banning the Confederate flag at tracks to the series’ support of racial equality and the Black Lives Matter movement, Wallace has been impressive as a catalyst for positive changes in NASCAR and in our society. On the track, he was quite remarkable as he placed fifth and sixth in the first two stages of the Blue-Emu Maximum Relief 500. Piloting a No. 43 #BlackLivesMatter Chevy, Wallace placed a respectable 11th when the checkered flag flew. By and large, Wallace showcased his talents at the tough Martinsville Speedway.

TRUEX AND SMALL EARN BIG MARTINSVILLE WIN

REPLACEMENT

LIFETIME

I

t was only a matter of time, but much like a TV show in its second season, Martin Truex, Jr. and crew chief James Small finally hit their stride. Yes, this duo and their No. 19 team won the first two stages last Sunday at Atlanta. However, Truex finally hit the winning combination on Wednesday night. Now, the 2017 Cup Series champion didn’t luck his way to victory circle at Martinsville. Instead, they ran a patented race, placing fourth in Stage 1 before setting up for the race win in the final laps. Taking the lead once and for all on Lap 370, Truex never looked back. In fact, one could say he never looked back in anger. Slip and slide to the fact that this was Truex’s first win of 2020 but his first with Small. In the end, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

RECAPPING JIMMIE JOHNSON’S NASCAR CAREER

■■ Jimmie Johnson advanced to the Championship 4 with a win at Martinsville in 2016.

MARTINSVILLE WINS SETS UP JJ’S SEVENTH CHAMPIONSHIP BY JA RED TURNER

J

immie Johnson has won a lot of races — nine of them, to be exact — at Martinsville Speedway over the course of his Hall-of-Fame career, but it was his most recent victory at the fabled Virginia short track that carried the most weight in terms of championship implications. When Johnson arrived at Martinsville in the fall of 2016, the event marked the opening race in the Round of 8 and the Hendrick Motorsports driver was seeking to punch a ticket to NASCAR’s Championship 4 for the first time in three tries (prior to 2014, there was no Championship 4). Given their history at the .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval, Johnson and his No. 48 team knew Martinsville was probably their best chance in the Round of 8 to get a win and thereby assure themselves a berth at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the championship round. So, Johnson pretty much went for broke. The strategy ultimately paid off as Johnson overcame various setbacks in the middle portion of the race to lead the final 92 laps and score a victory that assured him the opportunity three weeks

0 1 8

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: JUNE 11, 2020

later to compete for a recordtying seventh championship in NASCAR’s top division. It’s fair to say that Johnson has never been so happy — or relieved — to win at Martinsville. “Obviously, the bright spot and the shiny spot in all this is we’ve got a shot at a championship,” Johnson said. “So, we’re fired up and ready to go. I’m very, very excited for the next couple of weeks. We’re certainly ready to go to Homestead and race, race for this thing.” Johnson, of course, went on to claim the title at Homestead, joining NASCAR legends Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt as the sport’s only seven-time champions. Had it not been for what he did at Martinsville a few weeks earlier, however, Johnson likely would still be in search of championship No. 7.

TRUEX WINS AT THE HISTORIC MARTINSVILLE NIGHT RACE This week, popular YouTuber and streamer Rusty Walrus is back outside in his car for another fast reaction to last night’s race in Martinsville. This time Rusty is in his darkened garage, fitting for the first ever night race under the lights at Martinsville, due to the radical change of NASCAR’s 2020 season. And it wasn’t only historic for the time and temperature, it also showed some other leaps forward for the NASCAR culture. We’ve seen races at Martinsville finish under 0 2 6

the lights before, but never before have we had a legit night race scheduled to run that way, particularly a mid-week race on a Wednesday night. We also saw the debut of Bubba Wallace’s Black Lives Matter No. 43, a bold statement of peace that likely wouldn’t have happened in years prior. So how did Rusty react to this moment in history? Was it a race to remember, or just another short track rumble at Martinsville. Find out in the latest episode from Rusty Walrus!

Dale Jarrett BY ROB TIONGSON

Throughout the season, Rob Tiongson interviews various drivers in the world of NASCAR. Today, as a preview for an upcoming special series, he talks with 1999 NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett. ▶  WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO DRIVE FOR THE WOOD BROTHERS RACING TEAM IN 1991? As I look back on my career, we have defining moments. My tenure with the Wood Brothers started in the 1990 season when I was out of the Cup Series and running my XFINITY Series team. Early in the season, Neil Bonnett got a concussion at the end of the Darlington spring race. When Eddie Wood called me about replacing Neil Bonnett, the next race was Bristol. I didn’t know if it was going to be one, two or five races. As it turns out, I drove the rest of 1990 and went into 1991 as the driver for the Wood Brothers. It was a dream come true. Little did I know that this would be the turning point of my racing career. That opportunity from the Wood Brothers to drive their car and get my first Cup win in 1991 changed my professional life forever. ▶  YOU SPORTED A COOL MUSTACHE AND LONG HAIR IN 1991. DO YOU CHUCKLE WHEN YOU SEE PHOTOS FROM THAT TIME? Yeah, for sure! I had longer hair and my mustache starting in high school. I didn’t shave that mustache off until 2000. When I look back on that, it’s easy for me to distinguish what year something is, especially if you’re wearing the same uniforms and had the same sponsors. My kids laugh at it some. My youngest son Zach, he’ll grow a mustache and say that he could challenge me for having that mustache. But I’ll say, “Look, Dale Earnhardt and Kyle Petty had it.” So, I wasn’t the only one by any means.

■■ Dale Jarrett won the Daytona 500 in 1996.

▶  YOUR DAD, NED, CALLED YOUR FIRST CUP WIN AT MICHIGAN. HOW SPECIAL WAS IT TO SHARE THAT MOMENT WITH HIM? So many people forget that he was calling that race because of what happened two years later in the ’93 Daytona 500. Of course, it’s winning the Daytona 500 and I’m battling Dale Earnhardt, everybody remembers that and wants to talk about that. But they forget that he was actually in the booth calling the race that I won for my first Cup win at Michigan that day. The thrill of doing that with my dad there… we can’t repay our parents in a lot of ways for all the stuff that they’ve done for us. But 0 3 0

this was something that I felt like, he could be proud that I had followed in his footsteps, not necessarily for that reason, but I did it because I loved to compete and it was something I wanted to do. It was a huge moment to do that. Even though it wasn’t one like the 1993 Daytona 500 where they let him talk and call the last lap, I think he was a little bit in shock. He said he couldn’t believe that I was still sideby-side with Davey Allison because I almost spun out coming out of Turn 2. It was a huge thrill for us to have that family moment. It’s something that we’ll always have as a father and a son.

IN THE HOTSEAT ▶  I’VE HEARD SOME STORIES ABOUT 1995 DAYTONA 500 PRE-SEASON TESTING, BUT IS IT TRUE THAT ERNIE IRVAN SNUCK IN AND DROVE THE NO. 28 CAR WHEN YOU WERE SOMEWHERE ELSE? Yeah, we kind of pulled a fast one there! Of course, Ernie had been injured and that’s why I was even at Robert Yates Racing to take his place as he recovered from his injuries. He felt like he was recovering enough that he wanted to get behind the wheel. So, we literally went into the Robert Yates hauler, and I went in there and he came back out with a helmet on and everything. And I just stayed inside the hauler. Nobody was really paying any attention because we were up towards the front of the old Daytona garage. I stayed out of sight and he went out and made some laps. Nobody ever knew any different other than the people that we had there at Robert Yates Racing. And none of us ever said anything. 0 3 2

▶  DESPITE COMING FROM A FAMOUS RACING FAMILY, YOU WANTED TO EARN YOUR OPPORTUNITIES AND SUCCESSES ON YOUR OWN. DID YOU FEEL LIKE YOU AND YOUR TEAM WERE READY TO WIN IN 1991? That’s an interesting question because I don’t know if we felt like we were ready to win. But what we were ready for was something that changed for us. We worked extremely hard on the cars, making them handle and drive better. But we knew that Robert Yates designed a new cylinder head for Ford. And they were using that. We were down in horsepower quite a bit. Most of the rest of the Ford teams were too. There were a couple of teams that were starting to get these cylinder heads, but we were a little bit down the line even though the Wood Brothers have always been Ford Motor Company. That day at Michigan in August of 1991 was the first time that we had those cylinder heads. And what I knew was that it was going to allow me to compete at a higher level on a more regular basis.

DRIVER Q&A

KYLE BUSCH CONTINUES TO SET MAJOR GOALS BY JOSEPH WOLK IN

As Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch fights for Cup Series title No. 3, there are several goals he wants to accomplish. He is near 100 wins in the XFINITY Series, and he wants to hit that mark in the Cup Series as well. But can driver No. 18 do the unthinkable? ▶  WITH 56 CUP WINS THUS FAR IN YOUR CAREER, WHAT IS A GOAL YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN THAT REGARD? “We always set our goals high and go out there and try to achieve, so as I’ve said before let’s set that at 100. That would certainly put us up there with the top guys but it’s a long way to go, we’ve got to win a lot of races to get there but we’ll keep trying to get there each year and see where we end up.” ▶  ONCE YOU HIT 100 WINS, IS THAT IT FOR XFINITY LIKE YOU’VE SAID IN THE PAST? “I’ve always said that 100 is the number I want to get to stop racing what I’m allowed in the series, so that hasn’t changed at all. Just like I’ve said before, I would do a favor for Joe if he needs me to go over there and fill in to see where 0 3 4

our cars are at, or if there was a sponsor we needed to help to keep his program going. I am always going to be there for help if they need it. I have a couple of more races I’m allowed to run this year and we are at 97 now, so we’ll do the best we can with those opportunities we have this year.” ▶  WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO SECURE A THIRD CUP SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR? ““There’s a long way to go for sure. I think we just need to keep getting stage points and work on getting some playoff points as well, since those add up when you get down to the final 10 races. Biggest thing is just keep working on improving our stuff and have a shot to continue to advance through each round and try to get back to the final four when we get to Phoenix and have a shot at it.”

championship trio leads the list of winners in car No. 22. That honor belongs to Glenn “Fireball” Roberts, who posted 30 of his 33 career victories in cars with that number. Overall statistics show that cars carrying No. 22 in the NASCAR Cup Series have visited Victory Lane 81 times while posting 615 top-10 finishes in nearly 1,550 starts. Byron drove Park’s No. 22 car in six of the eight races during the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series season in 1949. He won twice, visiting Victory Lane at the Beach and Road Course in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Virginia’s Martinsville Speedway. In addition to Roberts and Byron, the list of drivers to win multiple races in car No. 22 includes Logano (23), Allison (17), Ward Burton (5) and Kurt Busch (2). The No. 22 was synonymous with Bill Davis Racing for many years and Team Penske has been the number’s caretaker since the 2011 season.

reddie Kraft, spotter for Richard Petty Motorsports and driver Bubba Wallace, saw his first Cup Series race at the Watkins Glen road course in 2010. Ironically, it was his first day on the job as a spotter in NASCAR’s premier series. “I was actually working what’s known as the bus stop section of the track for Tommy Baldwin Racing,” Kraft said. “Ron Fellows was driving for Tommy that day. I had actually been spotting at lower level events, such as the K&N Pro East Series. Tommy needed someone, so I told him I would come up and do it.” While growing up in New York, Kraft’s dad, cousins and uncles raced on Saturday nights during the summer months. When he turned 16, he found himself behind the wheel before expenses and the lack of time ended his career. “That’s when I decided to go toward the spotting side of racing,” Kraft said. “I felt like I was still playing a part in the outcome of the race.” Kraft spotted for the Mobile, Ala., native in K&N competition, the Truck Series and Xfinity Series. Kraft returned to Baldwin’s Cup team with driver Michael Annett in 2014 and has also worked with drivers Trevor Bayne, Greg Biffle and Landon Cassill before returning to Wallace when he joined the Cup Series in 2017. “Obviously, most of our job is safety of the driver,” Kraft said. “You try to let them know where the accidents are around them.”

■■ Buck Baker got his start as an openwheel racer.

ormer city bus driver Elzie Wylie “Buck” Baker was 30 when NASCAR held its inaugural Strictly Stock (today’s Cup Series) event at the Charlotte Fairgrounds on June 19, 1949. He didn’t become a full-time NASCAR competitor until 1953 when he entered 33 races, winning on four occasions. A year earlier, Baker won what was called the Speedway Division championship. It was the only year NASCAR tried its hand at sanctioning Indianapolis-style open-wheel racing. He developed into one of NASCAR’s early greats and became the first driver to win consecutive NASCAR premier series championships in 1956 and 1957. Ironically, he also finished second in points to Tim Flock in 1955 and Lee Petty in 1958 to cap off an incredibly successful four-year span of racing. He never finished lower than fifth in premier series point standings through 1960.

Baker’s 1957 NASCAR championship came while driving his own Chevrolets fielded out of his Charlotte shop. He also won races in NASCAR’s Modified, Speedway and Grand American series. But his legend was made in NASCAR’s premier series; his career victory total of 46 ranks tied for 14th all time. All told, he fielded cars for a long list of legendary NASCAR drivers, spanning over 788 races. Of those, Baker drove his own cars in 468 events. Two forays into the Grand American Series that enjoyed a four-year stint from 1968 to 1972 and the Grand National East Series netted an additional 20 victories. Baker’s final Cup Series start came at age 57 on Oct. 10, 1976 in the fall 500-mile event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he finished 24th in a Chevrolet owned by H.C. Porter. The final two events of his career came in a Late Model short track event at Batesburg, S.C., as well as a special “Winston Legends” race for retired drivers at CMS in 1991 at the age of 72. Prior to his passing in 2002, Buck founded and operated a series of high-performance driving schools at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway and North Carolina Speedway. Prior to coming to NASCAR in 1990 from open-wheel Sprint cars, fourtime Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon learned about stock car racing at the Baker High Performance Driving School.

FRM RELEASE

FRONT ROW MOTORSPORTS LAUNCHES “THANK A TRUCKER” CAMPAIGN

F

ront Row Motorsports (FRM) today announces a new initiative as part of the team’s season-long cause marketing plan. The “We Care: Thank A Trucker” Program will offer fans the ability to show their appreciation for truck drivers on the frontlines who are working hard to keep our country going during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, our nation relies on those hauling food, supplies and equipment cross-country to stock grocery stores, hospitals and homes. Front Row Motorsports is asking everyone to show their appreciation for these frontline heroes by visiting TeamFRM.com/thankatrucker and pledging to leave a personal message for a trucker. Responses will be collected and shared on team and driver social media. Each pledge message will also be entered to win a swag bag that includes merchandise from various FRM partners, autographed items from FRM drivers and a chance to join a virtual team meet & greet. Throughout the campaign, messaging across the team, Michael McDowell, John Hunter Nemechek and Todd Gilliland’s social media channels will focus

on thanking truckers for their hard work with the hashtag #FRMThankATrucker. “This has been a difficult time for all of us,” said McDowell, Nemechek and Gilliland. “There isn’t a single person in this world who hasn’t been touched by the coronavirus pandemic in some way. The role of professional truck drivers continues to be critical to our livelihood. They’re working hard each and every day to keep shelves stocked and deliver vital goods to families across the country. Everyone at Front Row Motorsports hopes this initiative will help them know how much they are appreciated.” The “We Care: Thank A Trucker” Campaign will also see a special decal on all FRM NASCAR Cup Series cars and Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series trucks, debuting this week at Martinsville Speedway. FRM partner The Pete Store will also use “Thank A Trucker” messaging in their paint scheme on McDowell’s No. 34 Ford Mustang in Wednesday’s race. 0 4 3

OFFICIAL NASCAR MEMBERS CLUB Q&A

A CHANCE TO MEET HIS RACING HERO BY DA N GUT TENPL A N

Steve Hillman waited 16 years to get an autograph from the driver who sparked his love for racing at an early age. The Buffalo, N.Y., native met his childhood hero, Jeff Gordon, in 2014 while taking an Original NASCAR Members Club-arranged garage tour at Watkins Glen. “It was my best experience as a member of the club,” Hillman said. “I finally got something signed by Jeff Gordon in person. It only took 16 years.” Hillman recently connected with ROAR to share his NASCAR experience. ▶  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A FAN OF NASCAR? “It’s been close to 30 years.” ▶  WHAT DREW YOU TO THE SPORT? “I watched it for a while. I went to my first race in 1998 at Watkins Glen and got hooked. Jeff Gordon was my favorite driver. Now it’s Chase Elliott.” ▶  WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES OF THAT FIRST RACE? ““My first three races, my aunt and uncle asked if I wanted to go with them. We camped and went into town to watch the race on Sunday. It was a great experience.” ▶  HAVE YOU BEEN TO ANY OTHER TRACKS? “Starting in 2003, I went to other tracks. I kicked it into high gear. I’ve been to 10 or 12 other tracks.” ▶  WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE CLUB? “Around 2006 or 2007. They had a setup at a track; they used to go weekly. At the time I signed up, they were offering opportunities to go to driver introductions and garage tours.” ▶  DID YOU GET JEFF GORDON’S AUTOGRAPH AT AN ORGANIZED SESSION? “No, I just happened to be walking through the garage, and I was able to catch him at the right 0 4 4

place and right time.” ▶  ARE YOU PLANNING TO ATTEND ANY RACES THIS YEAR? “I went down to Daytona for the 500, and I was hoping to go to Watkins Glen again this year. I’m hoping to make at least another two or three races.” ▶  HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CHASE ELLIOTT’S START TO THE SEASON? “I think this is going to be his best year yet. He’s been fast and contending for the win every week. He already has one win. I can see him winning three or four more.”
