ERIC’S IRACING PRO INVITATIONAL RACE REVIEW In this week’s episode of Out of the Groove, host and creator Eric Estepp takes us through the exciting iRacing replacement race this weekend. With the regular Cup season currently suspended until May, the exhibition match was broadcast used much of the same elements as a typical race, including the invocation and the anthem. But it isn’t all just about the novelty of the event, or the conversation that iRacing has sparked among NASCAR’s fanbase. Eric also takes 0 0 4

us through the racing action itself. With names like Bobby Labonte and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. coming out of retirement to join current Cup drivers like Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, and Bubba Wallace, Eric takes us through the twists, turns, and cautions that ultimately led to Denny Hamlin’s victory. So what does this event mean for the future of esports, and where did it land on Eric’s legendary Groovy Gauge? You’ll have to watch the episode and find out!

ON-AIR PERSONALITIES IN NASCAR Who wants to watch a NASCAR race or any sporting event with mediocre on-air talent? After all, fans don’t just tune in for a good race; they want insightful, colorful commentary that entertains, answers their questions and improves the overall viewer experience. Thankfully, NASCAR has benefited tremendously from having more than its share of really good announcers, race analysts and TV reporters down through the years, and a few of them have been downright exceptional. Following is a list of who I consider to be NASCAR’s top five all-time on-air personalities. BY JA RED TURNER

DARRELL WALTRIP

S

ometimes almost folksy to a fault, NASCAR Hall of Famer and three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip enjoyed the kind of second career that most people can only dream about having. Named the lead color commentator for FOX Sports’ NASCAR race coverage that commenced in February 2001 with the Daytona 500, Waltrip — or “DW,” as he’s known in most NASCAR circles — remained in that role through 2019, when he called it quits at the conclusion of the FOX Sports portion of the season. While Waltrip was accused by some critics in his later years as a commentator for having grown a bit out of touch with the sport, he was adored by legions of fans both old and young. “It’s been a great run,” Waltrip said during a spring 2019 press conference announcing his forthcoming retirement. “Thirty years in a car and almost 20 years behind a TV camera, you can’t ask for any more.”

RICK ALLEN

A

lthough he flies more under the radar than many of his fellow NASCAR broadcasters, Rick Allen brings a level of pure talent to the booth that is not easily replicated. Best known for his passionate, “Green flag back in the air!” exclamation with each and every restart that occurs in a race he is calling, Allen brings no shortage of expression, enthusiasm and passion to his job. It’s also notable that unlike most of today’s top NASCAR broadcasters, Allen is not a former driver or crew chief. He simply arrived at where he is today — lead race announcer for NASCAR on NBC — by being really good at what he does. Prior to joining NBC Sports Group, Allen spent more than 11 seasons as play-by-play announcer for what is now the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Before his television career, Allen was a public address announcer for the University of Nebraska and Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Nebraska.

JEFF GORDON

I

n his fifth season as an announcer/color commentator for FOX Sports’ NASCAR coverage, fourtime NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon made what seemed like a virtually seamless transition from driving race cars to opining about them. While Gordon admits to having had some jitters in his first season behind the mic, he’s excelled in his current role and brings a unique flavor to the job as someone who isn’t just a former driver but also as someone who has actually raced against most of the drivers competing today. It also helps that Gordon’s delivery behind the mic is silky smooth. “He’s plugged in and he’s a student of a lot of different things going on in motorsports, which is terrific,” FOX Sports lead race announcer Mike Joy said. “As for the broadcast tools, he picked up our lingo and nuances very, very quickly. He sounds like somebody that has been doing TV for quite a long time.”

DR. JERRY PUNCH

A

rguably one of the most underrated on-air personalities to work in the NASCAR industry, Dr. Jerry Punch called his final race in 2014 — the final year of ESPN’s most recent TV contract with NASCAR. Punch, a medical doctor who earned his M.D. from Wake Forest University, spent many years in the sport as an ESPN pit reporter and was beloved for his very conversational, sincere approach with drivers, which led many of them to open up to him in ways they normally wouldn’t. One of the most memorable examples of this came at the 1996 Brickyard 400 when Punch approached Dale Earnhardt just moments after Earnhardt — nursing a broken sternum and collarbone suffered the previous weekend — was forced to hand his over his race car to a relief driver on Lap 6. “Dadgum it, it’s hard to get out of there, Jerry,” Earnhardt said, displaying a raw emotion rarely seen from the seven-time champ. “I mean, you know, it’s my life right here.”

KEN SQUIER

A

2018 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Squier could be rightfully considered the godfather of all NASCAR announcers. One of NASCAR’s original broadcasters, Squier co-founded the Motor Racing Network (MRN Radio) in 1970 but is perhaps best known for his masterful commentary on CBS Sports — the longtime home to the Daytona 500, which Squier often referred to as “The Great American Race.” In fact, it was Squier who coined the now-familiar moniker. Squier most famously called the 1979 Daytona 500 — the first NASCAR race ever broadcast before a live audience on national TV. “There’s a fight!” Squier memorably shouted into the microphone just moments after the race had ended and two of NASCAR’s biggest stars — Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough — looked to settle their differences after Bobby’s brother, Donnie, had tangled with Yarborough in a last-lap crash. NASCAR was better off from that day forward, and Squier deserves a lot of the credit for it.

IRACING HAS TAKEN THE NASCAR WORLD BY STORM

Did you witness that pulsating last-lap battle for the win between Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Sunday’s inaugural eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series event? The race — held at a virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway — featured a field of 35 consisting of NASCAR drivers past and present and was even broadcast live on FS1 with commentary from regular FOX Sports announcers Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon. Fans and drivers alike seemed to REALLY enjoy themselves, as the race garnered a huge reaction on social media. While it might not have been “real” racing, what happened on Sunday was the next best thing. JA RED TURNER ▶  IRACING ISN’T SO EASY — JUST ASK KYLE BUSCH Although iRacing bears some striking similarities to wheeling an actual stock car, the two genres certainly have their differences. Just consider the fact that some of NASCAR’s biggest stars — among them Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch — struggled in Sunday’s simulator race, while lesser known drivers such as Timmy Hill, Chase Briscoe and Garrett Smithley finished in the top five. Said Kyle Busch afterward: “The cars drive way different than cars would in real life, so it’s definitely something to get used to and a different challenge.”

■■ Denny Hamlin pulled out a win in Sunday’s eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series event.

▶  KUDOS TO NASCAR FOR ANNOUNCING A RETURN DATE Unlike the NBA, MLB and PGA — which have suspended their respective seasons indefinitely as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 — NASCAR recently announced a tentative return date, which is the May 9 NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway. While that plan could certainly change, forcing NASCAR to move its much anticipated first ever Saturday night at Martinsville to a different weekend or even a weeknight, NASCAR should be applauded for at least trying to give fans an idea of when normal activities will resume.

ll things considered, the sounds of 35 stock cars thundering on a Sunday afternoon was like music to many people’s ears. While the world of sports and NASCAR Cup Series racing awaits their on-track return, the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Series Invitational Series kicked off its inaugural race with Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 150 on a simulated Homestead-Miami Speedway. The series, which was announced prior to the start of last Tuesday’s third round of the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series’ race at Homestead by Ben Kennedy, vice president, racing development of NASCAR, featured a full field of stock car

legends alongside today’s stars from the major three series. Certainly, prior to Sunday’s 100-lap race, the field prepared for this special event with various success. For some, particularly for three-time Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin, it was his first sim racing laps in three years. On the other hand, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson recognized the challenges ahead of him. Prior to the green flag, a pair of qualifying rounds determined the starting grid for the Dixie Vodka 150. In fact, 11 drivers from the

NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series fought for six of the final coveted spots in this field. Making the grade were Ty Majeski, Chase Briscoe, Anthony Alfredo, Ryan Truex, Justin Allgaier, and Austin Cindric. Following the Qualifier race, Garrett Smithley scored the pole with William Byron posting the second fastest time. Rounding out the top-10 were Ty Majeski, Ross Chastain, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Chase Briscoe, Timmy Hill, Parker Kligerman, Denny Hamlin, and Landon Cassill. As the green flag unfurled, the action unfolded with multiple wrecks that derailed the days of Kurt Busch, William Byron, Kyle Larson, Alfredo, John Hunter Nemechek, Kyle Busch, and Chris Buescher, among others. However, the action was quite competitive and spectacular, with Hill, Earnhardt, Hamlin, and Smithley mixing it up for the win in the final 20 laps. With the race’s longest green flag run setting up an epic finish, Earnhardt took the lead in the final laps before waging a paint-trading battle with Hamlin towards the stripe. Ultimately,

Hamlin’s hard charge was enough to take the checkered flag over Earnhardt, Hill, Briscoe, and Smithley. Alex Bowman, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Preece, Majeski, and Erik Jones rounded out the top-10. “What I thought my struggle was going to be was I hadn’t done this in three years up until a week and a half ago when I got back on it,” Hamlin said. “I’m excited that we kind of got the sport reenergized and got people talking about racing again, and that’s all pretty important.” Considering simulation racing’s momentum in the past week, Hamlin recognized the momentous occasion for sim racing and ontrack, auto racing. “You know, I mean, I think it’s a success no matter what,” Hamlin observed. “People are talking about it. If we got five new fans that were just sitting at home watching TV today that thought it was exciting and is willing to tune in next week or willing to tune in to a NASCAR race or go to a NASCAR race because they got introduced to racing today by iRacing, it’s a success. So, I don’t think you have to -there’s no number that makes it a success. If you made positive gains in your audience, whether it be one person or 1,000, it’s a good thing.” Regardless of viewership, on this Sunday afternoon, racing of any kind was a welcome sight for motorsports enthusiasts with the same vigor, intensity, and competition that the masses will welcome back in good time. 0 2 3

GETTING IN ON THE IRACING COMMUNITY When you think of iRacing, usually the words “immersive,” “simulator,” and “driver development” spring to mind. While it’s true that NASCAR drivers such as Noah Gragson, Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr., and William Byron use iRacing to hone their driving skills, it’s also one of the best communities in the online racing world. hile a steering wheel and pedals are recommended, anything from a keyboard to an XBox or PlayStation 4 controller can be used. Virtual reality systems such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are also compatible but are by no means necessary for a high-quality gaming experience. Once you jump into the software for the first time, you’ll find the iRacing member’s website, which will show you all the races that iRacing is running at the moment. As of publishing, there are four types of races: Road, Oval, Dirt Road, and Dirt Oval. Each of these disciplines has at least one official rookie series to compete in right away, and some have unofficial series, which one can race in without impact on safety rating or iRating. Safety rating, which measures how many incidents you are involved in, along with iRating, which measures your driving skill based on how well you finish against your competitors, are measurements calculated and used by iRacing in order to place you with similarly-skilled drivers. That way you’re always in a competitive race, no matter if you’re just starting out, or if you’re a veteran. You’ll want to hop into an official race right away. You’ll quickly be surrounded by other players new to iRacing, since you’re in a rookie series. You’ll have the opportunity to move up through the ranks with them, and with the built-in radio system, you’ll be making friends in no time.

ot only will you move up the ranks with your friends, but you’ll also be racing alongside other NASCAR fans worldwide. It’s this feeling of community that keeps players coming back. Many join leagues, which aren’t official iRacing races, but are seasons organized by certain players. There are many of these, and they certainly fit all tastes, no matter what car or type of track you like. Some of the more notable NASCAR leagues include the National Online Racing Championship (NORC) and the Championship Online Racing Teams (CORT). There are hundreds more to choose from, and there are always more leagues starting up. Hosted sessions are a laid-back alternative to official sessions or leagues. These are iRacing sessions that one person hosts and other people join in. They can be just practice, which allows drivers to run laps at their leisure without the pressure of a race, or they can be a practice, qualifying, and a race, where drivers can compete with their friends to see who’s fastest. The host also has the option to password protect a session, if they want to control who enters their session. While iRacing is commonly thought of as a driver-development tool used by the professionals, it’s also built up a fantastic community of fans and racecar drivers alike. 0 2 5

Resochin, a product discovered by Bayer in 1934 and indicated for prevention and treatment of malaria, also appears to have broad spectrum antiviral properties and effects on the body’s immune response. New data from initial preclinical and evolving clinical research conducted in China, while limited, shows potential for the use of Resochin in treating patients with COVID-19 infection. Bayer in recent days has been in talks with the White House, HHS, CDC, and the FDA, offering any assistance we can provide with a focus on donating Resochin to help in the government’s efforts to combat the virus. Currently not approved for use in the United States, Bayer is working with appropriate agencies on an Emergency Use Authorization for the drug’s use in the U.S. Bayer thanks the Trump administration for moving quickly to enable this donation and will continue to work closely with the administration to support its efforts in the fight against COVID-19. Race Thread: eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series at virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway, starting at 1:30 PM ET on FS1

▶▶ By all means, it was nice to see the famed race thread on the NASCAR Reddit page return as the world still contends with the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether it was the competitors in the simulator rigs or their mancave stations, or even the FOX NASCAR booth of Mike Joy, Jeff Gordon, and Larry McReynolds having some fun calling the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series action, in the words of Boston Bruins TV announcer Jack Edwards, “Are you having fun yet?”

Jeffrey Earnhardt will attempt to qualify for tomorrow’s iRacing event with a car bearing the No. 50, a nod to how he’s looking at possibly driving for Floyd Mayweather’s new team

▶▶ No, this isn’t about a team that’ll promise to show up at Texas Motor Speedway. However, Jeffrey Earnhardt’s car number choice piqued the curiosity of Reddit NASCAR fans. Since last fall, famed boxer Floyd Mayweather has been rumored as the owner of a new NASCAR Cup Series team dubbed “The Money Team.” Still, the actual No. 50 entry has yet to see the light of day. Ultimately, was Earnhardt’s virtual car the first punch for the heavyweight boxer’s NASCAR efforts? 0 3 0

Did anybody else have a tough time finding a new driver to root for after your favorite retired?

▶▶ Blake1610 posed an intriguing question that fans of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Kasey Kahne mulled over when their favorite retired from fulltime competition. The commonality for fans was their tendency to gravitate towards a current racer whose traits and talents mirrored their legendary favorite.

Steve Letarte with the best explanation for why stage racing REQUIRES cautions

▶▶ This could be a matter of perception to some while others view this topic as a fact. Still, it’s interesting to ponder how fans perceive who serve as protagonists and antagonists in the major three series. As the sport endures changes with its talents, what traits do fans look for?

r/NASCAR . Posted by u/ChaseBriscoe 13

What are some of the most disappointing seasons by a driver?

▶▶ Whether it was a hangover from a bitter defeat or a letdown from the prior year, fans ruminated about some of the most disappointing seasons for a Cup Series racer in recent times. While some considered Kyle Larson’s frustrating 2018 campaign, others recalled Dale Earnhardt Sr’s anomalous, tough 1992 season.

▶▶ If you didn’t know Timmy Hill’s name before Sunday’s star-studded virtual race on FS1 or the Fox Sports app, you knew about it by the checkered flag. Hill, who scored a hard fought third-place finish, didn’t have a post-race interview on TV. However, his wife Lucy assisted with those efforts as seen with this legitimately awesome TV-style interview shared on Twitter. Fun was the key word for Sunday’s virtual race and the Hills provided that for race fans on Twitter. 0 3 2

ROAR! WEEKLY RACING MAGAZINE: MAR. 23, 2020

▶▶ As we all wait for the roar of stock cars at our local NASCAR tracks, Dale Earnhardt Jr recognized the momentous occasion for iRacing and e-sports. Earnhardt, a devout sim racer for the past 25 years, has been an advocate for the popular simulator, assisting with scanning racetracks from the past and present. Now, with a couple of races under his belt with the FilterTime colors, it’s safe to say race fans may feel the need for speed with iRacing.

▶▶ Alanis King provided this humorous tweet about Jimmie Johnson’s candid but hilarious efforts with the Pro Invitational Series race. If one saw Johnson’s simulator rig as shown on the telecast, well, one wonders how much Seven-Time looks forward to sitting more, NASCAR-stylish, versus his IndyCar setup with his next go-around.

▶▶ People let Chase Elliott tell you about his best friend, he’s the one who was the crew chief from the start to the end of virtual Homestead. Ryan Blaney took the helm as Elliott’s crew chief. Despite Elliott’s prognostications of doom, working with your good friend is all that matters.

▶▶ ESPN’s Ryan McGee provided this spectacular gem following the Dixie Vodka 150. After all, whether it’s on track or the virtual world, whenever Dale Earnhardt Jr sees a win snatched away from him in the final laps, in this case, to heck with social distancing – at least for Junior Nation.

▶▶ When things resume and NASCAR action returns, fans ought to be more merciful to Brian Neudorff, one of the kindest meteorologists in the social media and stock car communities. After all, this’ll make a soggy race weekend forecast seem tolerable, right? Kudos to Neudorff with his incredible sense of humor. 0 3 3

Experience security and peace of mind with the Honda EG2800i Inverter Generator. It provides quiet power, long run times, and a 30A receptacle for easy connection to a transfer switch. And at only 67 lbs., it’s trusted, portable home backup and DIY power where you need it, when you need it—for your home, and life. Find out more at gen.honda.com.

Please read the owner’s manual before operating your Honda Power Equipment and never use in an enclosed or partially enclosed area where you could be exposed to odorless, poisonous carbon monoxide. Connection of a generator to house power requires a transfer device to avoid possible injury to power company personnel. Consult a qualified electrician.
