Editor’s Letter… “Energy efficiency touches every industry and sector; we need to do everything possible to showcase what is best about energy efficiency so that we can optimize our resources moving forward.”

–Albert Thumann, Executive Director, Association of Energy Engineers At the 34th World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) held in Chicago earlier this year, over 3,400 energy professionals gathered at Navy Pier to do just that, discussing clean energy technologies that are emerging, evolving and will continue to shape our energy future. WEEC featured sixteen certification and training seminars for energy professionals, fourteen concurrent conference tracks, drawing over 3,400 industry professionals from 48 states and 43 countries.

Environmental Advocate & Water Policy Expert Alexandra Costeau headlined the WEEC’s opening session with her lecture The Great Oceans: Conservation & Sustainable Management. Costeau focused on a three point call to action: reducing consumption, reconnecting to natural resources, and innovating on how our communities build cities, grow agriculture and use transportation. Quoting her grandfather, famed explorer and ecologist Jacques‐Yves Cousteau, she illustrated that,

“We will never save the world if we are not a part of imagining what it can become”. Also speaking at the opening session were Jim Kohlhaas, Vice President, Strategic Energy Programs, for SAIC; Peter Belisle, President, Energy & Sustainability Services, Jones Lang LaSalle; and Val Jensen, Vice President of Marketing & Environmental Programs, ComEd. WEEC also featured a sold out 100,000 square foot exposition hall which showcased over 350 booth displays from high profile companies in the energy industry, including WEEC’s exclusive host, SAIC, along with Trane, Smardt, Leviton, and Sensor Switch. Additionally, many exciting events and new items were on the agenda for WEEC, one of them being the Chevy Volt, an innovative, never–been–done–before car that exists in a brand new category of cars. The Volt is a full–performance electric vehicle with extended range and was available onsite for WEEC attendees. As AEE continues to embrace social media advancements, this year’s event also included our first interactive WEEC Twitter Wall which showcased live tweets from the event along with the WEEC smartphone Conference Planning App which allowed attendees to review speaker sessions, build personalized conference program schedules and map out the exhibitors onsite. T. Boone Pickens, a world‐renowned energy entrepreneur and author of the Pickens Plan, closed the event as he discussed Powering Our Energy Future at the WEEC keynote luncheon. Pickens expounded on America’s need to more prominently include U.S. based natural gas in our energy infrastructure, stating that, “Two thirds of our trade deficit every year

comes from the purchase of foreign oil.” Initiatives such as replacing the diesel used in our truck fleets with natural gas, Pickens’ believes will reduce costs and provide job creation. As we look towards our 35th anniversary of WEEC, we hope that you will celebrate with us back in Atlanta! Mark your calendars for October 31‐November 2, 2011 at the Georgia World Congress Center!

Just Announced! Our Keynote Speaker the esteemed, General Colin Powell, USA (Ret.)

What others are saying… Overheard @ CNBC

Interviewed at WEEC, T. Boone Pickens suggests increases in U.S. employment could be found within the private sector, specifically in the oil and gas industry. During the Keynote Luncheon he expounded on the how the Pickens’ plan would create 400,000 jobs while making this country more self‐sufficient.

Overheard @ Patch.com For energy guru T. Boone Pickens, the keynote speaker at the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) in Chicago last month, “Natural gas is the new coal, it’s abundant.” Businesses, too, have many options and opportunities to adopt energy‐saving procedures. Many exhibitors at the WEEC displayed versatile, high‐efficiency, low‐cost energy products. Corporations can take advantage of energy‐reduction products that monitor room occupancy and automatically power down machines. Solar cell products were abundant commodities, as were new technology for insulation, appliances and occupancy‐detection systems that evaluate body temperature and motion for thermostat‐control management. Energy independence and changing how we use our resources will strengthen our economy as well as our local communities and events like the WEEC are a great place to start.
