Studio 804 is a hands-on design-build studio that gives graduate students in architecture the opportunity to truly understand the design and construction process behind a building. The dedication and attention to detail that myself and twenty other students undertook their final year of school would be an experience that would shape the way I viewed architecture for the rest of my career. Throughout the past several months while in this program, I have come to respect all aspects of the design process. I believe this was made possible because I was involved in every part and decision made within the project. As a team, we worked to build a house that would result in a simplified lifestyle for a future homeowner one day. Having the opportunity to be on the site every day and watch the project come to life allowed me to understand that architecture has the potenital to be the most influential factor of an individual’s life.

The site is one of the last lots to directly neighbor the Levee Trail in North Lawrence. For nine miles it runs parallel with the Kansas River and is surrounded by a dense canopy of trees. This environment and the vernacular observation on typical Midwestern farmsteads inspire major design decisions.

design narrative

The simple typological shape that forms these buildings is striking in its volumetric clarity. This creates a relationship between town and home, and public and private space on the site. The three buildings are clear in shape, matching in height, with connector hyphens in between. Their clarity of form is punctured at specific moments where the large curtain walls exist thus exposing the depth of the outermost surface.

The primary residence is approximately 1,550 square feet containing two bedrooms, one full bath, half bath, great room, full kitchen. An accessory dwelling unit of 520 square feet with a kitchen, full bath, and flex space is attached. Together, these components create a modern homestead with a focus on form, function, sustainability, and connectedness.

The Kelce College of Business at Pittsburg State University was in need of a renovation that would allow students to excel in a modern world. Working within a current building and adding an addition was an excellent exercise in understanding existing conditions and how they can effect the design. After diligent research of successful entrepreneurial schools, a design was developed focusing on how the left and right side of the human brain collaborate with each other. Using that research, the project set forth to create spaces that could be used by all different types of students. Not only was the space to be occupied by students but also faculty and visiting professors. Taking into consideration the needs of multiple groups allowed for a large scale design that resulted in a new sense of entrepreneurial spirit.

Awarded AIA Kansas Merit 2019 | Emerging Practioner Award With a completely blank slate and total freedom, the renovation of the University of Kansas Watson Library study carrels became one the most influential and inspiring learning experiences I have encountered as an architecture student. After four semesters of design studios, I was finally able to participate in a design-build studio. Being able to see the entire process of a project from beginning to end was an experience that has enabled me to fully understand the job of an architect. Collaborating as a team, our studio took on the challenge of creating a space for students to “hide away and study. Through various research methods and working closely with the client, we were able to design, build, and finish a space that will be used for years to come.

The current Visitor Center at the University of Kansas is not exactly what one would have in mind when being introduced to the college experience. The space is very old and outdated, not offering the modern and simple look that many are accustomed to. Finding a balance between modern and existing elements was a challenge I was not afraid to take on. Playing with the idea of designing a floor plan based off of the letters “K” and “U”, a space was generated. One of the main features of the building is the curve-like entrance instantly inviting guests in. The entire front facade is covered in curtain wall panels allowing students and others passing by to see movement inside as well as offering a view of campus to those looking out through the interior. The building encompassed everything that new and old students would want to see on the University of Kansas.
