Interview with MarĂa Luisa Yanguas, Interior Designer and Art Teacher
INTERVIEW WITH MARIA LUISA YANGUAS, INTERIOR DESIGNER: “I think it would take a greater effort to introduce the product to teaching level” María Luisa Yanguas has a degree in Fine Arts from University of Alonso Cano of Granada. In the beginning, she was a professor of decoration in art schools in Seville, Almería, Granada, Motril (Granada) and María Luisa Yanguas, Interior designer and teacher
Algeciras
(Cádiz).
Currently,
she
works both as an interior designer and as a teacher in DʼArte Academy of Motril.
- Do you consider the use of natural stone when you create an environment? Of course, I do. The natural Stones, for its qualities, are very attractive for creating multiple types of environments, for its beauty, durability, finishing possibilities... - From your point of view, is the marble from Macael a known material? Yes, it is. Traditionally, it is known nationally and, more recently, internationally.
10
- As a Interior designer, do you think that Schools and Universities have enough knowledge about materials from Macael? I think it would take a greater effort to introduce the product to teaching level, since, in general, there is not a deep knowledge about materials until you face a particular work. - If there is lack of knowledge, what do you propose to improve the approach to the new generation of interior designers, decorators...? Should, by the manufacturers, organize informative talks in which the qualities, applications, different textures, formats, and so on, are exposed so that students know the chances of that product. - Would you use Macael stone for inside a house? Why? I usually use it, that meets the objectives I pursue. - “All you could imagine, imagine it in stone. The possibilities are endlessâ€?. Do you agree with this statement? Although, the natural stone is not the most suitable material in particular environments, I agree that its possibilities are vast. - What kind of ďŹ nished/textures do you like? Aged and honed.
11
- Regarding textures, what is the trend today? In my opinion, the polished always have their place, but finished aged are the most interesting for me. - What qualities should have the stone to be chosen by an interior designer for a project? Beauty, durability, which does not deteriorate with use and fit with the idea of the project. - Within what project would you use the product Macael? In almost all. Tiling bathrooms, lining walls, bathrooms surfaces, flooring, and so on. - Could you point out some quality of product Macael? Durability, beauty, elegance...

Article of Sergio Gutiérrez García Architect
Getting to know natural stone Natural stone has been an essential material for construction from the dawn of time but it has also been a basic element in the creation of societies; be it for houses, in commercial architecture or for religious buildings. From constructions in the Neolithic era to contemporary architecture, natural stone has been used in works such as the Pyramids, the Parthenon or the Colosseum. With its various tones, the stone enables infinite design opportunities. Sergio Gutiérrez García Architect
The fact that such important projects relied on the stone might make one believe that the material is excessively expensive or unfeasible. It could be down
to the fact, however, that there is a lack of knowledge about its use in construction, in particular among young architects. They may opt out of using materials they are unfamiliar with, preferring other materials over studying their benefits. For that reason, it could be suggested that there should be a better understanding of the different types of natural stone that exist, of the opportunities that they generate and the benefits of their implementation in projects. A general lack of understanding in that area is due to the minimal time dedicated to its study at architecture schools. Teaching methods aside, in a university degree that advocates sustainable architecture on almost a daily basis, it seems incoherent to talk more about prefabricated materials such as multilayer panels, metal sheets, asphalts and bitumens than natural materials such as stone or wood. Speaking from personal
18
experience of a six-year degree, constructive systems on natural stone were discussed for no longer than an hour. Every architect should know the benefits of incorporating it in a project and the opportunities it offers. Currently, there are more and more cases of natural stone being used in houses, workplaces or for large monuments. Thanks to its durability, elegance and timeless features it remains a good choice for constructors and housing developers. The natural conditions of the stone make it an eco-friendly choice, given that it doesnʼt release toxins or chemical agents.
The wide range of colours, from the lightest to darkest tones, means that it offers infinite design possibilities. Nevertheless, there are some things we must take into account if we are to use it. Natural stone is formed rather than produced, meaning that there are never two pieces that are exactly the same. The various pieces may vary in colour, shade, grains or the number of fossil deposits. This is attractive for many home owners who see its distinctive finish and as a way to add character to a project. It is a formidable material which, with its various tones, allows for overabundant usage in design. Understanding its different types, finishes and applications is indispensable to take a decision about which stone is most appropriate for a specific project.
The opportunities for usage are infinite and it can be incorporated with any other material imaginable, or it can even be combined with other types of stone. It is often used for flooring, facades, kitchen counters, patios and chimneys. Furthermore, the characteristics of the stone make it an ideal material for modern bathrooms. It can be used for cobbled or tiled pavements in public spaces, due to its physical properties which make it more resistant to compression. This also makes it a perfect material for road or pedestrian surfaces. In interior design, tiled flooring is the most common application, given how easy it can be cleaned and maintained. It can create
19
historic and beautiful impressions and give a sense of luxury, quality and durability to a project. Given that underfloor heating has become more popular, natural stone is turning into an essential product. On top of these, there is also a new type of functional pavement using natural stone known as access flooring. They are composed of natural stone tiles supported on pedestals that form a high-loading, adjustable structure that can bear the weight of the pavement.
The mechanic capabilities of the stone make it possible to create great compositions of high-loading façades, both of masonry or ashlar work, although its structural role has reduced to the point of almost disappearing today. Its resistance, durability and permeability, make it convenient for things such as facades which are exposed to metrological elements. The appearance of steel or concrete portico structures however, initiated the search for new cost-saving, rapid assembly, architectural forms. This caused stone to be side-lined, used instead for mere surfacing or coating.
Nowadays, there are many projects which use stone to resurface their facades, and this is known as natural stone facing. This can be done by direct adhered installation, by mixed systems fixed with mortars or adhesives and wielding rods. It can also be achieved through mechanical fixings and lined filling with mortars. A final development will be ventilated stone facades, which avoid problems produced by thermal expansion and rainwater. In interiors, decorative stone panels are used to offer elegance to the space.
The stone has a natural elegance and durability that allows us to use it in designing both for exterior and interior projects, evident through its usage in the kitchen, bathrooms or chimneys. Materials such as granite are the best choice for natural stone worktops due to their durability and resistance to high temperatures. Once installed in
20
our homes, we can be sure that there will be no need for more kitchen décor, given the natural feel it provides to the area and its immunity to intense heat. It can improve the aesthetic qualities of our home under the correct lighting.
It can also be used for the exterior of a project. Slate, for example, is a good option for zones in which there is humidity or water. Natural stone is resistant to water, durable and requires very little maintenance.
To conclude, after a brief analysis of the benefits and possible uses of natural stone, I would like to reaffirm my initial concern and insist on the need to close any false myths related to it. If we take into account the total costs of a construction material over the course of say 30 years or more, natural stone is no more expensive than any other. The investment costs are compensated by the low costs of maintenance and its durability.
Natural stone, in all its diversity, is unarguably the most marvellous material, capable of bestowing a touch of quality on projects in which it is used. It offers us endless possibilities but must be interpreted correctly, something which is only possible through further getting to know it.
