MOTIVATION LETTER “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” Nelson Mandela Dear IFMSA Family. For me it is an honor to present this candidature for Director of the Standing Committee on Medical Education for the 2017 – 2018 term. I have worked hard to get to this point, starting as an active member, becoming a Local Officer, a National Officer and, currently, Regional Assistant for the Americas. I have lived many experiences in IFMSA, and have dealt with a lot of problems and new situations all of which helped me grow as a medical student and future doctor, but specially, as an individual.

Medical education is so diverse around the world, that it is hard to say that there is a single way in which SCOME works. During

It is amazing to see how many SCOMEdians work day after day in all five regions, to improve a specific area of their medical education, yet they still need to be integrated into a worldwide vision in a way that their actions can be potentiated to have a bigger impact, to be spread over the different NMOs, and to promote an intracommittee cooperation from the different corners of the world. This is an ambitious objective that could be just achieved with the help of an amazing international team,

Since I became part of SCOME back in 2013, I realized that Youth, and especially medical students, are the key to create a change in the local, national and international health system. Today, I am strongly convinced that IFMSA is in a unique position to make this change possible. The federation gathers an amazing number of students all of which have the desire to positively impact the communities they serve. I believe this environment facilitates actions that can have a worldwide impact.

my first years in SCOME, I thought that the main objective of the Committee was to identify gaps in the medical curriculum/medical education and look for several solutions, such as workshops, projects and advocacy campaigns to improve them. Today, my perspective has become much wider, as I have realized that there is much more to work in with SCOME. There are capacity building trainings such as TMETs, there are external representation opportunities like the AMEE Conference, there are the SCOME Sessions at the different international meetings to develop skills and gather ideas related to medical education, among others areas of work.

national officers on medical education, and many other members from IFMSA. Since I have worked with a perspective from different SCOME positions, I have a broad understanding of the needs of the different members of the Committee. I have realized that some new medical students from outside IFMSA, barely know about our structure or what we do as SCOME. I also know that there are some Local or National Officers on Medical Education, who gain a position in the organization but still need help to understand the dynamics of each NMO or IFMSA. That is why I will work hard with the SCOME international team, to empower SCOMEdians with all the different tools we already have and some other new ones, to consolidate a strong Committee that is able to function as one single body to create improvements in the health systems worldwide.

I am strongly committed to do the best work as possible if elected as SCOME Director, because I am convinced that the things done with passion, are the ones that will transcend over time. I have a really unique love for IFMSA, and especially for the Standing Committee on Medical Education, that have given me so much. I feel this is the best way to pay it back. Yours sincerely, Pablo Daniel Estrella Porter

PLAN OF ACTION DEVELOP SCOME INTERNATIONAL TEAM PROMOTE REGIONAL COLLABORATION IMPROVE THE MEDICAL EDUCATION CAPACITY BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY AND VISIBILITY PREPARATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MEETINGS PABLO ESTRELLA | PAGE 4

REPRESENT MEDICAL EDUCATION

DEVELOP SCOME INTERNATIONAL TEAM Follow up the work

Year after year, the International Teams invest a lot of time working, evaluating, finding problems and solutions for each region but not always that knowledge is shared properly with the upcoming team. Objective: ►To assure high quality and complete handovers to the new IT, through a detailed handover checklist and access to updated manuals and documents from the past terms. And work closely with the Regional Directors, as NMO representatives, for the appointment of the team.

Empower Regional Assistants Regional Assistants are the key element to assure the proper development of each Region in the medical education area. Keep updated Regional Assistants with relevant information will improve their work and performance. Objective: ►To apply transparent and continuous communication with all members of the team, through monthly online meetings, update emails, with a friendly working space and other practices.

Collaborate with other Standing Committees International Teams Standing Committees have a lot of common areas of work. And bringing together the different International Teams, will empower not just the work of SCOME, but the impact of IFMSA worldwide. Objective: ►To promote the collaboration between different standing committees’ relevant initiatives, by joining together regional and worldwide related activities, online meetings and sharing experiences, successes and failures from ITs.

PROMOTE REGIONAL COLLABORATION Work between Regions

More integration of NOMEs and members Objectives: ►To promote the subscription of NOMEs and SCOMEdians to the SCOME server through the help of RAs and by sending more relevant updates to it. ►To encourage the NOMEs, through the RAs, to post and share their local or national SCOME initiatives in the general Facebook group to increase the international diffusion of information.

PABLO ESTRELLA | PAGE 5

Objectives: ►To stablish continuous regional updates from the Regional Assistants, to improve communication and awareness of what is happen in SCOME worldwide, through a monthly email questionnaire. ►To promote the inter regional activities, with the work of the SCOME Regional Assistants and related Program Coordinators through the IFMSA Programs framework.

IMPROVE THE MEDICAL EDUCATION CAPACITY BUILDING Empower TMETs TMETs have increased significantly in number and locations over the past years. That is why a follow up of the quality and impact that trainings are having is needed. Objectives: ►To evaluate the quality and impact TMETs have had, through evaluation forms to graduated TMET trainers and TMET participants. And to review and update the TMET trainers’ database. ►To conduct more TMETs over the 5 regions, through the encourage of the RAs to hold TMETs in Sub Regional Trainings, a more organized TMET folder database and by working with the IT to send TMET proposals in Pre-RMs and PRE-GAs

Medical Education Tools for SCOMEdians Many active members, LOMEs or even NOMEs struggle with short NMO spots, financial or geographical barriers to attend to SCOME Sessions or TMETs all over the 5 regions. So a way to solve it, is by providing public tools and platforms to develop several medical education related skills. Objectives: ►To provide SCOMEdians worldwide, with online capacity building tools by working with Regional Assistants to create, collect and organize medical education materials. ►To complete and follow the work done in this field by the SCOME Small Working Groups and promote a worldwide medical education platform with continuous courses, webinars and up to date material.

SUSTAINABILITY AND VISIBILITY Global medical education focus areas

Objectives: ►To create the SCOME Strategic Plan with the work with the previous SCOME Director and the new International Team, so it follows the IFMSA Strategic Plan and the current global medical education needs and important focus areas of all regions ►To work with the RAs, to help following the SCOME and IFMSA Strategic Plans in all regions.

Manuals and Documents Objective: ►To work with the International Team to update relevant and related manuals that can be useful for the International Team, NOMEs, TMET Trainers and other SCOMEdians.

IFMSA Programs

Improve communication and visibility A lot of work is being made individually by the Medical Education teams all over the regions. That is why it is needed a way in which NOMEs can share their success, ideas and clarify doubts. Objectives: ►To implement a space for a regular online NOMEs’ meeting, where any National Officer or SCOMEdians can feel free to reach the International Team with any questions, comments or proposals. ►To promote the creation of a dynamic SCOME activities database that is updated by NOMEs and reviewed by Regional Assistants, so it can be easily seen what is going on in each region.

PABLO ESTRELLA | PAGE 6

IFMSA Programs are a great platform to improve the impact of local and national activities, and to showcase them worldwide, with a potential replication process over the different regions Objective: ►To promote the enrollment of activities by working with the Vice-president for Activities, Standing Committee Directors and Program Coordinators to point out strategies that some NMOs are making to be actively enrolling, and implement a worldwide approach.

PREPARATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MEETINGS NMO Needs in Medical Education Objectives: ►To use the already established evaluations made before each GAs, to tackle the needs and areas that the IT should focus in each region and NMOs. Use the information to create an outcome based agenda for the GAs. ►To encourage Regional Assistants to check previous NMOs SCOME evaluations, to follow the progress and find ways to accomplish the individual medical education needs.

Regional Needs Objectives: ►To work with each RA and RD, to assure that medical education needs are being tackled in each region, through objective tools like evaluations and questionnaires ►To assure the quality and the focus of each Regional SCOME Sessions at the Regional Meetings, by following the preparations processes and proving relevant tools and feedback.

Work with externals Objective: ►To work closely with the Liaison Officer on Medical Education, to evaluate the possibility to include relevant medical education externals in the SCOME Sessions at RMs and GAs.

REPRESENT MEDICAL EDUCATION Team of Officials

Objectives: ►To represent and give a voice to Medical Education in the Team of Officials Meetings and discussions. By looking for the best decisions for the Standing Committee, with the required information from NOMEs and Regional Assistants, and with and active participation in the related IFMSA and TO document creation. ►To identify the needs of each Region in the medical education field, and advocate to improve and implement strategies in IFMSA to solve them, by working closely with the Regional Assistants and Directors to have a good context of what NMOs and medical students need from the federation.

Objectives: ►To empower NMOs with high impact medical education externals for RMs, GAs and National work by closely working with the LME, to look for external opportunities in local, national or international levels as well. As well to create with the LME, a medical education opportunities database, to keep all the IFMSA community updated. ►To define with the LME, the priorities and tasks distribution within Medical Education external representation and the work among the International Team, according to his/her plan of action.
