FOTECOAT 1569 1. Description 100% solvent resistant screen emulsion with separate Diazo powder sensitizer Normal exposure time; very easy to remove Touch ups are practically avoided; wash-out is fast and easy and does not need a high pressure device Light purple in color for good transparency

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Applications Advantages 36% solids content before sensitizing High viscosity (relatively thick) For all inks containing solvents alone and no water Even aggressive inks do not harden the stencil during printing so that decoating remains easy regardless of the type of ink. Because of the mat surface static problems can be avoided 3. Coating technique and stencil build-up (coating trough .75 mm R) Mesh 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament

Coating 1/1, 2 face coats 2/2 2/3 2/5 1/2 2/3 2/3, 2 face coats

Stencil Thickness below mesh 14 µm 20 µm 24 µm 35 µm 10 µm 16 µm 18 µm

Because of the high viscosity it is recommended to let the sensitized emulsion de-gas during a few hours before coating. This prevents air bubbles in the stencil which could cause pinholes FOTECOAT 1569 is ideal for machine coating. If a lower viscosity is wanted, additional water can be added without changing the exposure time. 4. Stencil Quality

The resolution is good and reaches approximately 60 microns The definition is good After the wash-out the stencil is relatively soft. Do not use high pressure wash-out device The stencil is sensitive to humidity Chemical hardening is not recommended For stencil cleaning during printing it is necessary to use a solvent that does not contain water; otherwise the stencil becomes soft or sticky

FOTECOAT 1636 1. Description Fast, water resistant screen emulsion with separate Diazo powder sensitizer for textile screen printing Can be decoated with a high pressure water device Light purple with good see-through 2. Applications Advantages

info.fotec@saati.com

40% solids content before sensitizing Rather low viscosity (relatively thin) Suitable for all inks containing water only and no solvents Simple to use with good resolution and high definition

3. Coating technique and stencil build-up (coating trough .75 mm R) Mesh 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 77 T monofilament 77 T monofilament 120 T monofilament 120 T monofilament

Stencil Thickness below mesh 10 µm 14 µm 16 µm 6 µm 11 µm 13 µm

It is recommended to let the sensitized emulsion degas during a few hours after sensitizing. Coat slowly with enough trough pressure against the mesh. This prevents air bubbles which could cause pinholes. The emulsion can be used for coating on an automatic coating machine Coating again after an intermediate drying cycle improves the flatness of a stencil profile and does not increase substantially the stencil thickness. However the printing shoulders will keep contact with the substrate during the printing process; an improved printing result is achieved. For negative image printing the stencil thickness should be increased by 3-4 μm compared with positive printing. For very long runs, apply one additional coat, after drying, on the squeegee side to embed the mesh; increase exposure by 20 - 30%. If the emulsion is too thin (coarse mesh) use ½ bottle of water only to dissolve the Diazo powder. Shake thoroughly before mixing into the emulsion. 4. Stencil Quality

The resolution is excellent and reaches approximately 60 microns The definition is very good After the wash-out the stencil is hard. It is possible to use a high pressure device for the washout A chemical hardening by FOTECHEM 2110 or 2100 is possible. The water resistance and the wearing characteristics will improve. In such a case the stencil can no longer be decoated

FOTECOAT 1711 1. Description Diazo screen emulsion with separate Diazo-powder for solvent based inks Light purple after exposure with excellent transparency Ideal for humid and warm climates

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Applications Advantages On polyester 120T a stencil thickness below the mesh of approx. 10 microns can be reached by 3 coats from the printing side and 5 coats from the squeegee side, wet on wet. 8 microns are achieved by the 2/3 coating technique The coating technique with intermediate drying cycles can be used. The stencil maker does not have to change his coating technique; in many cases however one coating stroke can be saved Very high resistance against solvent based inks and UV-curing inks Nevertheless FOTECOAT 1711 is easy to decoat. High pressure necessary for aggressive inks Excellent adhesion and anchorage to the mesh; a strong water spray can be used for wash-out Partial areas of the finished stencil can be covered with tape or water soluble screen filler for multi-color work with one stencil. The screen filler can afterwards be washed out with water without damaging the stencil 3. Printing advantages Very high resolution with excellent definition both for positive and negative printing. The flow-out of the emulsion after coating and during the drying cycle is extremely good so that relatively thin stencils below the mesh can be coated, creating at the same time a flat-bottomed stencil which is hardly influenced by the mesh structure. 8-10 microns are sufficient in combination with polyester 120T for positive printing; 12-14 microns for negative printing

Resolution

Very good. The printing result depends on the mesh number, the mesh color, the coating and drying technique and the final dry stencil thickness below the mesh.

Edge Definition

Very good; also against aggressive cleaning solvents

Solvent Resistance

Reasonably good; screen filler can be washed out with water.

Water Resistance

Minimum

Sensitivity to Humidity

Easy; possible without high pressure unit. A degreasing cycle before decoating helps to prevent ghost pictures. Use FOTECHEM 2005 paste or 2044 powder or 2042 liquid concentrate

Decoating

Can be removed with FOTECHEM 2085 (blend of emulsifying solvents) followed by FOTECHEM 2080 (high alkaline paste).

Stencil/Ink Residue caused by inadequate cleaning/decoating

Excellent and without problems; the screen emulsion can be diluted with water if the viscosity is too high.

6. Stencil removal The longer the exposure, the easier the removal. FOTECOAT 1771 however undergoes a hardening by certain ink solvents. Therefore and depending on the ink used and the washing solvents, the decoating can be relatively easy or very difficult. A high pressure spray is recommended. Remove ink first with adequate solvent. FOTECO offers several stencil removers: FOTECHEM 2004 liquid; FOTECHEM 2005 paste; FOTECHEM 2042 concentrated liquid decoater (1:30) for machine decoating; FOTECHEM 2048 is a more efficient liquid concentrate (1:30) for decoating; FOTECHEM 2044 powder (use 5 litres of water to 100 grams of powder) Let stand for 10-15 minutes before hosing off. In automatic decoating equipment a high concentration of remover should be used and a degreasing cycle before the removal. 7. post exposure Once the stencil is washed-out and dried it can be exposed again under the sun, day light fluorescent tubes or with the standard exposure lamp; it is recommended to make the post-exposure without the vacuum frame so that no glass between the lamp and the stencil interferes with light absorption. 8. Stencil removal All commercial decoaters can be used. A high pressure gun is recommended. FOTECO offers several stencil removers: FOTECHEM 2004 liquid; FOTECHEM 2005 paste FOTECHEM 2042 concentrated liquid decoater (1:30) for machine decoating FOTECHEM 2048 is a more efficient liquid concentrate (1:30) for decoating FOTECHEM 2044 powder The longer the exposure, the better the through-curing of the stencil. If necessary make a post exposure. Both render the decoating easier.

7. removal

Standard stencil decoating chemicals can be used like FOTECHEM 2004 or 2005 The decoating chemicals should never dry on the stencil Make sure the screen filler is dissolved first with water before decoating starts Whenever possible degrease before the decoater is being applied; this facilitates decoating and helps to prevent ghost pictures. FOTOCHEM 2033 is an ideal degreaser concentrate For the regeneration of the decoated mesh FOTECHEM 2080/2085 can be used to remove all ink and emulsion residues; jet wash is necessary Diazo stains can be bleached out after decoating with FOTECHEM 2089 Important: A fully exposed stencil, with full thru curing, or a postexposure, facilitates the stencil removal

FOTECOAT 1432

Ready-to-use screen emulsion for the textile screen printing with plastisol and aqueous inks. Designed for CtS or projection exposure.

1. Description This very fast, presensitized polymer screen emulsion is extra designed for CtS or projection equipment Exposes 30x faster than Diazo or dual cure emulsions Processing under yellow light is highly recommended because of the high light sensitivity Superior water resistance Solids content 36% FOTECOAT 1432 WR is purple, the stencils allow good see-through

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Applications Advantages Can be coated on all types of meshes Medium resolution with good stencil edge sharpness Excellent print resistance Can be decoated very easy with the usual products The chemical hardening for the production of a more resistant or permanent stencil is possible with FOTECHEM 2100, 2110 or 2130 3. Coating technique Manually the ready to use emulsion can be coated 1/1 or 1/2 wet in wet. On coarse meshes 1/1 coating is possible. The viscosity is ideal for machine coating. To produce a flatter stencil profile with a lower Rz-value (to improve print edge quality) additional coats can be added after an intermediate drying cycle. After each such cycle the stencil thickness increases by 1-2 microns and the Rz-value becomes lower. After coating pour the emulsion from the coating trough into an empty can so that it can degas; this way air bubbles can be avoided in the stencil which results in less pin-holing 4. Stencil Quality Excellent mesh bridging. This causes an excellent stencil edge together with medium resolution at short exposure times. A perfect stencil can be achieved on dyed mesh if the correct coating and drying technique is applied. In combination with white mesh the resolution suffers slightly The cleaning of plastisoles should be done with white spirit and not with stronger solvents.

5. exposure times 1457 has very high sensitivity to UV light and is suitable for use with DLE machines. Many variables, such as lamp type and age, distance from lamp to screen, mesh type and coating thickness, can affect exposure time. If DLE exposure will be used, perform an exposure test with a 21-step Sensitivity Guide to determine correct exposure speed. The 21-step Sensitivity Guide should be taped directly to the surface of the emulsion in an area that will be fully exposed. 1457 stencils should hold a solid step 5 after thorough developing to guarantee proper resistance during printing, maintaining excellent resolution After washing out a post exposure is possible. Post expose with daylight or exposure UV lamp to produce a more water-resistance stencil 6. Stencil removal All commercial decoaters can be used. A high pressure gun is necessary. Stencil removal is only possible, if the screen has not been hardened chemically. For the regeneration of the decoated mesh FOTECHEM 2080/2085 or 2089 can be used to remove all ink and emulsion residues; jet wash is necessary

FOTECOAT 1015 WR

Same as 1915 WR, but Diazo in a bottle to be dissolved in water – NO DIR-AD

1. Description Fast, dual cure polymer type textile printing screen process emulsion with separate Diazo sensitizer powder, for aqueous ink systems. Blue colour with excellent see-through. The ready-made stencil can be posthardened by light to increase the mechanical and the solvent resistance. Very short exposure time

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Applications Advantages 41% solids content Medium viscosity, appropriate for meshes between 45 T and 120 T (lower viscosity than FOTECOAT 1065 and a higher viscosity than FOTECOAT 1636) FOTECOAT 1015 WR is a water resistant emulsion that can be printed with most inks containing water and little solvents A longer exposure renders the stencil more resistant against abrasion and therefore allows to print longer runs FOTECOAT 1015 WR can be decoated If a permanent stencil for all inks is desired a longer post-hardening by light or a chemical treatment with FOTECHEM 2110 or 2100 Hardener can be used. In such a case the stencil can no longer be decoated 3. Coating technique and stencil build-up (coating trough .75 mm R) Mesh

For fine details a post exposure is recommended. 7. Removal Only possible with high pressure gun. A higher concentrated remover than usual has to be used. Ideal are FOTECHEM 2004 liquid or FOTECHEM 2005 paste. For machine decoating the concentration of the remover liquid has to be increased and the speed of the machine be reduced to a minimum. A post-exposure makes the stencil removal easier 8. post-exposure Once the stencil is washed-out and dried it can be exposed again under the sun, day light fluorescent tubes or with the standard exposure lamp; it is recommended to make the post-exposure without the vacuum frame so that no glass between the lamp and the stencil interferes with light absorption.

7. Removal

FOTECO stencil decoating chemicals can be used The decoating chemicals should never dry on the stencil Make sure the screen filler is dissolved first with water before decoating starts Whenever possible degrease before the decoater is being applied; this facilitates decoating and helps to prevent ghost pictures.

FOTECOAT 1065 1. Description Fast, duo-cure polymer textile printing screen process emulsion with separate Diazo sensitizer powder, for aqueous ink systems Blue color with excellent see-through The ready-made stencil can be posthardened by light to increase the resistance Very short exposure time

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Applications Advantages 48% solids content before sensitizing High viscosity (adapted for coarse mesh) Can be coated wet on wet without intermediate drying down to a 18 T PE mesh Stencils made with FOTECOAT 1065 can be printed with most inks containing water. Depending on the aqueous ink system the stencil can be post-hardened with light to reach longer runs. Such a post-hardening makes the stencil also more resistant against solvents that could be contained in the aqueous ink. Can also be post-hardened with FOTECHEM 2110 or 2100 if a permanent stencil for all inks is desired. The FOTECHEM 2110 treatment does not need heat. The stencil can no longer be decoated 3. Coating technique and stencil build-up (coating trough .75 mm R) Mesh 18 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 43 T monofilament 120 T monofilament 120 T monofilament

Because of the high viscosity of FOTECOAT 1065 it is recommended to degass the emulsion after sensitizing during a few hours A 1/1 coating on coarse meshes is possible. The stencil build-up and hence the sharpness of the printed edge will however decrease FOTECOAT 1065 is ideal for machine coating. If necessary the emulsion can be di-luted with water 4. Stencil Quality Definition and resolution are excellent The high solids content guarantees a flat stencil surface combined with excellent mesh bridging The resolution is good

Developed for printing with abrasive inks

1. Description Fast, solvent resistant Diazo photopolymer screen emulsion, dual-cure Excellent flexibility coupled with improved adhesion to the mesh Very high definition and resolution Appropriate for long press life for the packaging printing industry Good transparency with light purple colour Recommended for UV inks

info.fotec@saati.com

2. Application advantages Recommended for use in the glass decoration, ceramic printing and ceramic decalcomania’s 32% solids content before sensitizing Medium viscosity; can be used with very fine meshes Solvent resistant; by post-exposure the stencil can be hardened so that inks containing small amounts of water can be printed for short runs 60% exposure time compared with a standard Diazo emulsion Can be decoated with the usual chemicals

Coating 2/3 1/2 2/3 2/3, + 2 face coats 1/2

4. Stencil quality The resolution is excellent and reaches approximately 40 microns. The printing edge sharpness is very good. The stencil is less humidity sensitive. After wash-out the stencil is hard. Wash-out with high pressure is possible. Thanks to the excellent solvent resistance the printing ink does not harden the stencil; removal is therefore possible. A chemical post-hardening improves press-life but makes the stencil permanent.

FOTECOAT 1811 1. Description High viscosity for coarse and fine meshes. Excellent flow-out avoiding pinholes caused by too fast coating 29% solids content for the ready-to-use emulsion Usable on white and yellow mesh Medium exposure time with outstanding exposure latitude on dyed mesh Can be exposed with almost all light sources; standard white actinic tubes need double exposure compared to super actinic purple light tubes Superior wet hardness after wash-out Fast wash-out Excellent resistance to solvent based inks and its screen washes Decoatable with all chemicals used for emulsion stencil removal Attention has to be paid to environment light; work and open can under yellow or tungsten light only; avoid day or stray light Is not affected by high humidity Can be dried at temperatures up to 60°C Can be hardened chemically with FOTECHEM 2100 or 2130 to improve the water resistance; the stencil however might become slightly less flexible. Post-exposure is not necessary and would not improve the stencil resistance 2. Applications Advantages No mixing (Diazo-free) needed Does not need degassing (do not pour back into same can) Can be coated wet on wet or, after an intermediate drying cycle, with additional coats on the printing side to reduce the Rz-value or on the squeegee side to reinforce the stencil for very long print runs Can be coated by machine or by hand, ideally with a coating trough with a lip radius of 1 mm Can be stored for two years 3. Coating technique

1/2 or 2/3 manually, wet in wet Dry print side down for wet in wet technique After an intermediate drying cycle dry print side up Machine coating: 1x up both sides simultaneously

4. Stencil Quality 120-34 Yellow Polyester 2/3 coating - 12 µm EOM - 50 µm Resolution - Outstanding edge definition and mesh bridging 120-34 White Polyester 2/3 coating - 12 µm EOM - 120 µm Resolution - Good edge definition and mesh bridging

7. Screen wash FOTECHEM 2090 is an economic and efficient low-evaporating screen wash. Odourless, prevents ghost pictures. 8. Stencil removal The old rule is valid: The better the hardening of the stencil system through a longer exposure time, the easier the stencil removal This screen emulsion is free of Diazo. Therefore no brownish residues on the mesh; the removal of ghost images is simplified The stencil removal is simplified if the ink is removed immediately after printing. Then firstly degreasing with FOTECHEM 2003 ready-to-use or FOTECHEM 2033 Concentrate, diluted 1:10, is recommended FOTECO offers several stencil removers: FOTECHEM 2004 liquid; FOTECHEM 2005 paste FOTECHEM 2042 concentrated liquid decoater (1:30) for machine decoating FOTECHEM 2048 is a more efficient liquid concentrate (1:30) for decoating FOTECHEM 2044 powder To speed up removal a high pressure device is recommended. Important: Hose off with soft spray first to remove the chemicals, then only use the power spray Ghost images: Brush on FOTECHEM 2085 (a blend of emulsifying solvents), then apply FOTECHEM 2080 (high alkaline paste) with a brush; let stand for maximum ½ hour, then hose off with mild spray before the residues are removed with a high power spray. Increase pressure to 100 bar or higher if residues are very stubborn

It is recommended to use dyed mesh. Stainless steel mesh can be used. 2. Hints for stencil production 2.1 Casting Method Attention: The mesh must be stretched with a minimum of 30 newton/cm to avoid the cracking of the stencil After the pre-coating of the fabric (to clog the open mesh) choose the needed mask to cast in such a way that it is approximatively 4 x higher than the needed stencil thickness over the mesh Work on a levelled table only to avoid the flow-off of the emulsion after the casting. Let de-gas thoroughly before drying in the oven. Let dry completely at maximum 40°C. Use intervals during wash out; immerse in water and use soft spray with luke warm water. Highly recommended is a test exposure first. It is important that the screen emulsion is through-cured completely by the light. To avoid blisters use only de-gassed emulsion!

FOTECOAT 1834 SOLO 3.

Appiano Gentile, May 2014

FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO

(Water Resistant) Ready-to-use presensitized screen emulsion for the production of extra thick stencils.

Suitable for the following print media: plastisols, thermoplastics, silicones, textile inks, aqueous inks and adhesives, granulates, glitter, frit, special inks for the ceramic tile printing, 3-D (high density) printing on jeans, baseball caps and T-shirts. FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO has many unusual aspects and must be used by following the described processing technique. FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO should be coated on synthetic fabric numbers from 8 - 54 / cm or on equivalent stainless steel meshes.

info.fotec@saati.com

FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO can be coated wet in wet by hand or machine. It’s possible to apply between 5 to 20 strokes from the squeegee side. No mask or frame build up is necessary. The final stencil thickness depends entirely on the number of strokes from the squeegee side. Stencil thicknesses of approx. 100 - 2000 microns proud of the mesh can be achieved, depending on fabric type and number. To achieve high quality, bubble free stencils, the following coating technique is necessary: by hand 2 coats print side, 2 coats squeegee side wet in wet Scrape well off from both sides Apply the needed number of coats from the squeegee side only, all wet in wet by machine 2 coats print side alone As many coats as necessary from the squeegee side only All wet in wet The tables under point 9 explain the context between mesh, stencil thickness, drying time, exposure and wash-out. 1. Description

Presensitized polymer screen emulsion, water resistant Colour: dark, high contrast purple Solids content: 58 % Viscosity: extra thick – similar to putty Degassing is very slow because of the high viscosity; avoid stirring Should FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO become cold (transportation, refrigeration), the viscosity will increase; make sure it reaches at least 25°C before coating or warm up the emulsion in a water bath

Degrease and dry mesh in the usual way. Use a standard trough (1,0 mm lip radius) for coating by hand or machine. Coat very slowly; coating sequence see page 1. Important: Dry first with print side down for approx. 15 min. then finalize drying with print side upwards. Important for coarse meshes! Temperature of circulating air: maximum 30°C (86°F) to avoid skin forming. Drying time: The best is to let the stencil dry over night. It must be completely through-dried before exposure. As long as the stencil has a light colour, it is not yet completely dry. The dried stencil must have a dark purple colour. Exposure: A step wedge based on the information under point 9 is necessary. Only high intensity light sources should be used. Wash-out: The exposed stencil must be immersed in lukewarm water; then use a good spray to open the unexposed area. In this condition the stencil is soft and must be treated carefully and without high pressure. See table 9.1. Make ready: Let the stencil dry and block the surrounding open mesh area with tape or water resistant emulsion. Stencil cleaning: FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO is a water resistant emulsion; cleaning with white spirit or mild solvents only. Stencil removal: Immerse in a strong concentration of stencil remover until it breaks off. (FOTECHEM 2042 diluted with water 1:10). Then brush with remover liquid (if necessary) and finally rinse thoroughly with a mild water spray before using the high pressure gun Or use standard remover and apply from squeegee side only, then peel away the thick stencil from the mesh and rinse with water pressure.

CLEAN-MIX is NOT recommended. 3. stencil quality Stencil thickness: It is important to realize that the mesh type, the mesh number, the thread diameter, the weave and the colour, together with the trough lip radius, the coating speed and the number of strokes applied control the repeatability and the effective thickness. Tests are necessary Fabric stretching: Thick stencils have tendency to become brittle. Maintain screen tension at 30 N/cm or higher in order to ensure that the mesh will snap-off and release the ink in a slow and controlled manner Stencil opening/resolution: Thumb rule: 3 x total stencil thickness = minimal stencil opening Example: stencil thickness 500 μm x 3 = line width minimum 1500 μm Stencil edge sharpness / definition • The bridging of the mesh is excellent. Practically no crow feet • The stencil shoulder is crisp and corresponds closely with the film positive • The stencil opening however is conical (smaller in the mesh) with the result that printing becomes more difficult because of obstructed ink flow • By increasing the distance between lamp and vacuum frame and adapting the exposure time, the conical structure can be reduced Dyed mesh allows to achieve residue-free, crisp mesh openings

5. Exposure Light source: Necessary is a high light intensity in the wave length of 340-400 nm. Metal halide lamps need a photopolymer bulb (not diazo or gallium); the type of instant starter (without shutter system) is generally well suited. Mercury vapour lamps need very long exposure times. Fluorescent tubes are not recommended The metal halide bulb should have less than 500 operating hours Distance light source to vacuum frame: to reduce the exposure time for thick stencils a reduction from 100 cm down to 80 cm can be of advantage. This results in approx. 35% shorter exposure time. The conical structure however increases It is essential to make first a test exposure (step wedge) to find the optimum exposure time in relation with the mesh colour, the number of threads, the thread diameter, the weave and the coated stencil thickness Mesh

6. washout/developing Because of the high stencil thickness special processing is necessary The exposed stencil should be immersed in lukewarm water of 25 - 30°C depending on stencil thickness A good spray only must be used to rinse the softened stencil until the reachable openings are clear Ideal is the use of a Flottmann pistol At this stage the stencil is soft and does not allow a maltreatment by excessive water pressure (maximum 20 bar) 7. Chemical hardening Use FOTECHEM 2100, 2110 or 2130 following the respective Technical Information. Hardened stencils might become very brittle. They are no longer decoatable. 8. printing The snap-off during printing should not exceed 1 mm. A sharp, hard squeegee is necessary for sharp printing.

FOTECOAT 1836

Ready-to-use screen emulsion for the textile screen printing with plastisoles and aqueous inks; fast exposure time

1. Description Fast, presensitized polymer screen emulsion Processing under yellow light is recommended because of the high light sensitivity FOTECOAT 1836 WR SOLO is magenta, the stencils allow excellent see-through Smaller quantities can be evacuated with the waste water Solids content 36% Can be used for printing with food products

info.fotec@saati.com

2. APPLICATION ADVANTAGES Can be coated on all types of meshes Medium resolution with good stencil edge sharpness Excellent print resistance Can be decoated with the usual products The chemical hardening for the production of a more resistant or permanent stencil is possible with FOTECHEM 2100, 2110 or 2130. See Technical Information To speed-up the wash out for thick stencils after exposure an immersion for 5-15 min. in a water bath is possible 3. manual and machine coating Manually the ready to use emulsion can be coated 1/1 or 1/2 wet in wet. On coarse meshes 1/1 coating is possible The viscosity is ideal for machine coating To produce a flatter stencil profile with a lower Rz-value (to improve print edge quality) additional coats can be added after an intermediate drying cycle. After each such cycle the stencil thickness increases by 1 - 2 microns and the Rz-value becomes lower After coating pour the emulsion from the coating trough into an empty can so that it can degas; this way aird bubbles can be avoided in the stencil which results in less pin-holing 4. stencil quality Excellent mesh bridging. This causes an excellent stencil edge together with medium resolution at short exposure times. A perfect stencil can be achieved on dyed mesh if the correct coating and drying technique is applied. In combination with white mesh the resolution suffers slightly The cleaning of plastisoles should be done with white spirit and not with stronger solvents

6. Exposure times If metal halogen lamps are used for exposure insist on a photopolymer bulb. Do not use actinic fluorescent tubes, but only super actinic tubes, a 125 W HPR lamp or a Osram Ultra-Vitalux 300 W lamp The exposure time depends with such lamps on the number of operating hours (ca. 10 % UV light loss for 100 hours) This presensitized screen emulsion has a very high light sensitivity and allows short exposure times. Therefore the exposure latitude is narrowed. It is essential to make first a test exposure to find the optimum exposure time for the desired stencil. Longer exposure times result in better mechanical resistance and easier decoating, but have a trend to losses in the resolution Example for exposure times with 5KW MH-lamp, with photopolymer bulb at 100 cm distance: Mesh

7. Stencil removal

info.fotec@saati.com

Rule: The better the through-hardening of the stencil system by longer exposure times, the easier will be the removal. Recommended for an effective removal are: FOTECHEM 2004 liquid; FOTECHEM 2005 paste FOTECHEM 2042 concentrated liquid decoater (1:30) for machine decoating FOTECHEM 2048 is a more efficient liquid concentrate (1:30) for decoating FOTECHEM 2044 powder A preliminary degreasing cycle is recommended. The removal is always sped-up, if the printing ink is removed immediately after printing. It helps further if firstly FOTECHEM 2003 gel (degreasing agent) is applied and washed-off. This degreaser is also available as FOTECHEM 2033 concentrate; it can be diluted with 10 parts of water For the decoating cycle a high pressure water gun is always recommended. Important: always rinse the chemicals first from the stencil with a soft water spray before the high pressure gun operates Ghost pictures: After removal, the staining of the mesh or ink and stencil residues can be removed as follows: Wet the mesh first with FOTECHEM 2085 (emulsifying solvent mix), then brush-on immediately FOTECHEM 2080 alkaline paste. Let stand for maxi-mum 30 min., then rinse with a mild water spray before the ghost pictures are removed with a high pressure gun from the mesh threads. Never let the mixture FOTECHEM 2085/2080 dry in on the mesh ! Another method is the use of FOTECHEM 2089 Gel. This product contains solvents. Can be coated with the trough. Wait maximum 5 minutes, then rinse and finish cleaning with water high pressure. See Technical Information

FOTECOAT 1837

Thick Film Stencils

FOTECOAT 1837 SOLO is very thick and somewhat easier to coat than FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO. The application technology is described in the Technical Information FOTECOAT 1835 SOLO. FOTECOAT 1837 SOLO is ready-to-use, presensitized and can be used for the production of thick stencils by the wet in wet coating method.

info.fotec@saati.com

FOTECOAT 1837 SOLO is pink with 52% solids and a very good water resistance. Stencils made with FOTECOAT 1837 SOLO can be used for printing all types of aqueous inks and for plastisoles as long as the stencil is not cleaned with aggressive solvents. FOTECOAT 1837 SOLO can be used on polyester and steel mesh by the manual or by the machine coating. The thickness of the stencil over the mesh (EOM) depends on the number of coats applied from the squeegee side. The following tips might be useful for the application: 1. manual coating 2x print side, 2x squeegee side, wet in wet Scrape both sides Apply the number of needed coats from the squeegee side, wet in wet 2. by machine 2x print side Coat from the squeegee side only the necessary number of layers, wet in wet 3. drying Coated screens should be dried during the first 15 minutes with print side down-wards, then turn over and finish drying at 30°C maximum 4. exposure time The following rule helps to find the correct exposure time with a 5 KW metal halide lamp at 100 operating hours and with a distance of 100 cm between vacuum frame and lamp: Mesh

Time in Seconds

White

33% of total stencil thickness

Dyed

50% of total stencil thickness

Steel

100% of total stencil thickness

Total stencil thickness means mesh thickness + EOM. It is recommended to start with a step wedge to find out the correct exposure time.

7. Fluorescent tubes are not recommended. The metal halide bulb should have less than 500 operating hours. Distance light source to vacuum frame: to reduce the exposure time for thick stencils a reduction from 100 cm down to 80 cm can be of advantage. This results in approx. 35% shorter exposure time. The conical structure however increases. It is essential to make first a test exposure (step wedge) to find the optimum exposure time in relation with the mesh colour, the number of threads, the thread diameter, the weave and the coated stencil thickness 8. Stencil removal Rule: The better the through-hardening of the stencil system by longer exposure times, the easier will be the removal. Thick Film Stencils

Ready-to-use presensitized screen emulsion for the production of extra thick solvent resistant stencils by the wet in wet coating method Suitable for the following print media: plastisoles, Braille, gaskets, peelable solder masks and relief printing on various substrates 1845 has many unusual aspects and must be used by following the described processing technique 1845 should be coated on synthetic fabric numbers from 12-64 / cm or on equivalent stainless steel meshes 1845 can be coated by hand or machine wet in wet. It´s possible to apply between 5 to 20 strokes from the squeegee side No mask or frame build up is necessary. The final stencil thickness depends entirely on the number of strokes from the squeegee side Stencil thicknesses of approx. 100-2,000 microns proud of the mesh can be achieved, depending on fabric type and number To achieve high quality, bubble free stencils, the following coating technique is necessary: 1. Description

Presensitized polymer screen emulsion Colour: blue Solids content: 49 % Viscosity: extra thick – similar to putty Degassing is very slow because of the high viscosity; avoid stirring Should 1845 become cold (transportation, refrigeration), the viscosity will increase; make sure it reaches at least 25°C before coating or warm up the emulsion in a water bath

2. Stencil making under yellow or tungsten light A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. I. J.

Degrease and dry mesh in the usual way. Use a standard trough (1,0 mm lip radius) for coating by hand or machine. Coat very slowly below chart shows you stencil build up with various coating methods Dry first with print side down for approx. 15 min. then finalize drying with print side upwards. Important for coarse meshes! Temperature of circulating air: maximum 30°C (86°F) to avoid skin forming. Drying time: The best is to let the stencil dry overnight. Exposure: A step wedge under 9 is necessary. Only high intensity light sources should be used. Washout: The exposed stencil must be immersed in lukewarm water; then use a good spray to open the unexposed area. In this condition the stencil is soft and must be treated carefully and without high pressure. Make ready: Let the stencil dry and block the surrounding open mesh area with tape or water resistant emulsion. Stencil cleaning: 1835 N is a water resistant emulsion; cleaning with white spirit or mild solvents only. Stencil removal: apply FOTECHEM 2005 from squeegee side only, then peel away the thick stencil from the mesh and rinse with water pressure.

Thick Film Stencils

Immerse in a strong concentration of stencil remover until it breaks off. (2042 diluted with water 1:10). Then brush with remover liquid (if necessary) and finally rinse thoroughly with a mild water spray before using the high pressure gun. Stencil removal can also be done by application of the remover paste or solution on the squeegee side. After a few minutes the film can be peeled off from the print side and emulsion residues can be removed with a second application on both sides.

Practically no craw feet • The stencil shoulder is crisp and corresponds closely with the film positive • The stencil opening however is conical (smaller in the mesh) with the result that printing becomes more difficult because of obstructed ink flow • By increasing the distance between lamp and vacuum frame and adapting the exposure time, the conical structure can be reduced Dyed mesh allows to achieve residue-free, crisp mesh openings 4. storing This ready-to-coat emulsion should be stored in a closed can, protected from direct a light. Protect also against freezing. Condition

5. Exposure See examples under section 9 Light source: Necessary is a high light intensity in the wave length of 340-400 nm. Metal halide lamps need a photopolymer bulb (not Diazo or gallium); the type of instant starter (without shutter system) is generally well suited. Mercury vapour lamps need very long exposure times. It is essential to make first a test exposure (step wedge) to find the optimum exposure time in relation with the mesh colour, the number of threads, the thread diameter, the weave and the coated stencil thickness

6. washout/developing Because of the high stencil thickness special processing is necessary The exposed stencil should be immersed in lukewarm water of 25 - 30°C depending on stencil thickness A good spray only must be used to rinse the softened stencil until the reachable openings are clear Ideal is the use of a Flottmann pistol At this stage the stencil is soft and does not allow a maltreatment by excessive water pressure (maximum 20 bar) 7. Chemical hardening Do not harden FOTECOAT 1845 SOLO chemically. A post-exposure does not offer advantages. 8. printing The snap-off during printing should not exceed 1 mm. A sharp, hard squeegee is necessary for sharp printing. Stretch the mesh with at least 30 Newton. Avoid wooden frames. 9. parameters The tables below give examples to assist in determining the number of coating strokes on various fabric numbers to achieve the wanted stencil thickness and the resulting exposure, wash-out and drying time.

Thick Film Stencils FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO has a high viscosity between FOTECOAT 1845 SOLO and 1847 SOLO. The usage of this screen emulsion is described in “Technical Information FOTECOAT 1845 SOLO”. FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO is ready to use, presensitized and usable for the production of thick stencils by the wet in wet coating method.

info.fotec@saati.com

FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO is blue and has a solid content of 44% coupled with a very good solvent resistance. A post-exposure improves the curing whereas a chemical hardening increases the water resistance. FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO can be applied on polyester meshes from 21 to 77 by manual or machine application. The stencil thickness over the mesh depends on the number of coats from the squeegee side (and naturally on the mesh number). For the application the following hints should be considered: 1. Manual Coating 2x printing side, 2x squeegee side wet in wet Scrape from both sides Apply the necessary number of coats from the squeegee side, wet in wet

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Appiano Gentile, May 2014

Thick Film Stencils FOTECOAT 1846 SOLO 2. by machine 2x printing side Apply the necessary number of coats from the squeegee side, wet in wet The drying should be done with the print side downwards during the first 15 minutes, afterwards turn the screen with the print side upwards and dry at the maximum tem-perature of 30°C. The exposure time with a 5 kW metal halide lamp at 100 cm distance to the vacuum frame can be calculated as follows: On white mesh for every 100 micron total stencil thickness (thickness of the mesh + stencil thickness over the mesh) = 1 minute; on yellow mesh 1 minute and 40 seconds. It is recommended to make a test exposure with a step wedge to find out the correct exposure time.

info.fotec@saati.com

The wash-out should be done as follows:

Immerse the exposed stencil in a water bath at 25 – 30°C Then spray with a good water jet the softened parts of the openings until they are clear An excellent tool to wash-out adequately is the Flottmann water pistol A very high water pressure should be avoided because the stencil is relatively soft during the wash-out process

The chemical hardening with FOTECHEM 2100, 2110, 2113 or 2130 is possible by following our Technical Informations. Chemically hardened stencils become brittle. They can no longer be reclaimed. The reclaiming can be done with the usual FOTECHEM decoating products. Storing time is 2 years.

FOTECOAT 1850

Presensitized, polymer, solvent resistant, ready-to-coat screen emulsion

1. Description Extremely fast polymer emulsion, presensitized; free of Diazo For ink systems based on solvents Working under yellow light is recommended because of the increased light sensitivity The emulsion has a light grey-blue color; the stencil has excellent see through Harmless for sewage water and at the working place if standard industrial precautions are followed

info.fotec@saati.com

2. APPLICATION ADVANTAGES No mixing; does not need degassing: therefore less pinholes Best print results are achieved on dyed- and steel mesh The exposure time on dyed mesh corresponds to approximately 40% of FOTECOAT 1010 or 15% of FOTECOAT 1569 No post-exposure needed High resolution with precise stencil edge sharpness thanks to high content of solids (36%) Low viscosity for manual and machine coating Ideal for thick film stencil production Can be removed with the usual remover products 3. manual and machine coating Manual: The ready-to-coat emulsion can be used by the 1/2 or 2/2 technique The viscosity is ideal for coating machines To produce a flatter stencil profile and a lower Rz-value - to improve the print edge sharpness - additional coatings are possible after intermediate drying. The stencil thickness increases by 1-2 microns and the Rz-value is lowered with each additional coat onto the dried surface If the emulsion is poured back into the can after coating, it will be necessary to check before the next coating if the emulsion is degassed completely; check if there are no longer air bubbles on the emulsion surface. The reason is, that like all screen-emulsions, air is sucked into the emulsion during stirring or coating. Such air bubbles are the main cause for pinholes. 4. stencil quality The excellent wet hardness and the low swelling characteristics during the wash-out produce stencils with unique mesh bridging characteristics. Therefore an excellent stencil edge sharpness is guaranteed. Coupled with the very high resolution power at short exposure times, unsurpassed quality stencils are achieved on dyed mesh or steel if the correct coating technique and drying position is used.

6. Exposure times All light sources with a spectral light output between 340-400 nm can be used Metal halogen lamps with an iron charged burner or a gallium/iron burner are ideal The loss on UV-light during the working time of the lamp must be considered (approximately 10% per 100 burning hours) This emulsion has a very high light sensitivity. The exposure latitude is therefore reduced. This needs a careful step wedge to find the optimum result in respect of exposure time. Longer exposure produces better mechanical resistance of the stencil but shows losses in the resolution Exposure time with a 5 kW MH-lamp, type Akticop 3500 S, at 100 cm distance on yellow mesh 120T-34 and 13 microns stencil build-up is approximately 20 seconds. (Coating 1x printing side, 3x squeegee side, wet in wet) White mesh is responsible for strong light scattering; the print result will suffer 7. Then firstly degreasing with FOTECHEM 2003 ready-to-use or FOTECHEM 2033 Concentrate, diluted 1:10, is recommended

FOTECHEM 2004 liquid; FOTECHEM 2005 paste FOTECHEM 2042 concentrated liquid decoater (1:30) for machine decoating FOTECHEM 2048 is a more efficient liquid concentrate (1:30) for decoating FOTECHEM 2044 powder

To speed up removal a high pressure device is recommended. FOTECOAT 1860

Presensitized, polymer, solvent resistant, ready-to-coat screen emulsion

1. Description Fast, presensitized emulsion ready-to-coat; free of Diazo Completely solvent resistant and very easy to decoat Available in green or purple color with high contrast Solids content 35%; high viscosity Economic to use Harmless for sewage and at the working place

info.fotec@saati.com

2. APPLICATION ADVANTAGES No mixing; does not need degassing: therefore less pinholes Best printing results are reached on dyed polyester and on steel mesh Good resolution and stencil edge sharpness Can be easily removed with the usual products Thanks to the mat stencil surface static problems can be avoided 3. manual and machine coating Manual: The ready-to-coat emulsion can be used by the 2/3 technique. Because of the high viscosity of this emulsion the same technique can be used for coarse mesh The viscosity is ideal for coating machines. If necessary the emulsion can be thinned with water without losing light sensitivity To produce a flatter stencil profile and a lower Rz-value - to improve the print edge sharpness - additional coatings are possible after intermediate drying. The reason is, that like all screen emulsions, air is sucked into the emulsion during stirring or coating. Such air bubbles are the main cause for pinholes 4. stencil quality Thanks to high solids content and the perfect viscosity an excellent mesh bridging is reached. The edge definition is reasonably good. Coupled with high resolution characteristics and the short exposure time excellent stencils on both dyed and white mesh or on steel mesh can be produced if an adequate coating technique is used. On white polyester the definition is somewhat lower and the exposure latitude decreases.
