De pokdalige tocht die gaat van ‘geen inspiratie’ tot aan ‘uw-mond-valt-open-van-verbazingwekkend-mooi’, is enkel weggelegd voor die grenzeloos creatieve groep mensen, die voor jou en mij beter bekend staan als kunstenaars. Maar daarmee vergeten wij dat er veel meer kunstenaars zijn dan enkel zij die tot aan hun kruin de verf hebben zitten, of met de boetseerklei door het leven gaan. Er bestaan tenslotte ook nog de legendes van de keukenbrigade, die met praktisch elke eetbare grondstof hele digitale werelden veroveren. Kunstwerkjes die jou en mij watertandend boven ons bord laten hangen, terwijl wij eerst nog even een ‘Instagram worthy’ foto pogen te maken, voordat we met een gevoel van verwondering onze tanden zetten in wat eigenlijk zou mogen worden beschouwd als een van Gogh-je op het bord. In de keuken worden namelijk ongekende mythes vormgegeven. Te snel vergeten wij, dat de chef en zijn gepassioneerde team hun gelijke treffen in de meesters waar wij een museum of expositie voor bezoeken. Ook zij bijten zich soms dagenlang stuk op hun klim naar inspiratie. Ook zij zitten zwetend en broedend op het ei van Columbus om uiteindelijk mensen als jou en mijzelf in vervoering te brengen en een beleving te schenken, die misschien nog wel verder gaat dan de kunst die zich in dit hotel bevindt. Voor zij die achter de schermen hun talenten laten spreken, valt geen applaus ten dele, maar is een daverend smakkend “hmm lekker” als het krijgen van de roem die menig kunstenaar toekomt. The remarkable bumpy road that goes from ‘no inspiration’ to ‘your-mouth-falls-open-of-astonishingly-beauty’, is only reserved for that limitless creative group of people, better known as artists and creators. By knowing this, we sometimes forget that there are many more artists and creators than just those who we encounter with splashes of paint at the weirdest places, or go through life with the modelling clay in their pockets. After all, there are also the legends of the kitchen brigade, who conquer whole digital worlds with practically every edible raw material. Culinary artworks that leave you and me hanging mouthwatering above our plate, while we initially try to make an ‘Instagram worthy’ photograph before we sink our teeth, with a feeling of amazement, into what might actually be considered as a genuine van Gogh on the plate. After all, many myths are created in the kitchen. Too often we forget that the chef and his passionate team members, find their equal in the masters for whom we visit a museum or exhibition. They too, sometimes struggle for days in their quest for inspiration. They too, are sweating to lay their hands on the egg of Columbus to finally bring people like you and me into an emotional state of mind and to give us an experience that might go even further than the art in this hotel does. For those behind the curtains who let their talents speak, there is no applause that fills their ears with joy, but instead there is that thunderous and smacking saying of “hmm nice”, that gives them the fame many artists deserve to thrive on. A glance at the dishes from the kitchen of this Dutch Design-inspired restaurant, shows us only one truth: All these smacking songs of praise are more than justified for these skilled and passionate professionals. EXPOSANTEN | EXHIBiTORS Kriebelende gevoelens van nostalgie brengen ons in vervoering als we terugdenken aan de hippie muziek, polkadots, en bloemenprints die de jaren ‘50, ‘60 en 70-tig sfeer kleur gaven. Toch rijst bij ons de vraag, is Dutch Design eigenlijk wel retro? Het feit is namelijk dat Dutch Design pas later in de jaren negentig erkenning heeft gekregen. Dutch Design is meer een manier van denken en ontwerpen en is al decennia sterk geworteld in het Nederlandse designonderwijs. In 1950 werd namelijk al de eerste ‘Dutch Design’ avondopleiding opgericht onder de naam ‘De Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving Eindhoven’. Dit was een broedplaats voor de vele fantastische ontwerpen die wij nu als ‘retro’ bestempelen. Deze ontwerpen hadden voor de plaatselijke reuzen zoals Philips vaak een oplichtende functie in praktische zin en op niveau van innovatie. Dutch Designers kenmerken zich over het algemeen door hun innovatie en vernieuwingsdrang, maar ze zijn ook zeker niet te trots om terug te kijken naar ontwerpen die in vervlogen tijden al als wiel hebben meegedraaid. Zo wordt het wiel niet opnieuw uitgevonden, maar versmelten oude ontwerpen met functionaliteit en jeugdsentiment die zo in een vernieuwend, modern jasje worden gehesen. Tijdens de expositie Retro Fantastic kun je je op een fantastische, soms eigenzinnig, speelse wijze laten meevoeren door de jaren ‘50 tot en met ‘70. Met momenten van heimwee en nostalgie, maar ook met de kijk en vernieuwende slagen van nu, waardoor we oude stijlen, stijlvol doorbreken. 08. | ART E MIS A MSTERDA M. C O M/
Feelings of nostalgia almost make us fall in love all over again, when we remember the hippie music, polkadots and floral prints that all made the 50s, 60s and 70s to what they were. Yet the question arises, is Dutch Design actually retro? The fact is that Dutch Design only gained recognition later in the nineties. Dutch Design is more a way of thinking and designing and has been strongly rooted in design education for decades. In the year 1950, the first ‘Dutch Design’ evening course was founded under the name ‘The Academy for Industrial Design Eindhoven’. This course gave birth to many fantastic designs that we now label as ‘retro’. These designs often had an enlightening function for the local giants such as Philips in the most practical sense and in terms of innovation. Dutch Designers are generally characterized by their innovation and urge for innovation, but they are certainly not too proud to look back at designs that have already played a role in yester years. In other words, the wheel is not reinvented, but old designs merge with functionality and youth sentiment and by doing so, they get a whole new modern and innovative look and feel. During the exhibition called ‘Retro Fantastic’, you will be carried away in a fantastic, sometimes quickly and playful way through the 50s all the way up until the 70s. With moments of melancholy and nostalgia, but also with the vision and novelties of today, so that we break old styles in a stylish way.

In mijn werk komt dit veelal terug in de vorm van een paradox tussen uitbundige verspilling en de manier waarop deze lust voor het oog d.m.v. van talrijke kleine elementen, met de hand, moeizaam wordt vervaardigd. RECYCLE GIRLS: Ik vind wel eens meer dingen, die ik verwerk in mijn beelden. Zo vond ik een aantal theepotten bij de glasbak in de buurt van mijn atelier. Er waren een paar hele mooie bij en ik vond het zonde ze te laten staan. Ik heb ze meegenomen en zo stonden ze daar in de kast, waar ik er elke dag een blik op kon werpen. Ik wilde iets met deze afgedankte objecten. Het “Objet Trouvé” verwerken in mijn eigen beeldtaal. Het design van de theepot integreren, een wisselwerking creëren tussen de vorm en het décor en ornament van de theepot en het beeld, dat boven op de pot zit of staat.

Eva and The Recycle Girl, unique object, porcelain, ceramics, glas I think more and more people worry about the way we consume, about how we use and particularly, we misuse our planet. In my work this is expressed as a paradox between abundance and the way in which many small elements are made with great effort. RECYCLE GIRLS: Near the bottle bank in my neighbourhood, I found some old used tea-and coffeepots. I took them with me and there they stood, so I could look at them ones in a while. I wanted to do something with these ditched objects, to incorporate the “Objet Trouvé” in my own visual language. Marian Williams lives and works in France. Born in 1962 (Retro) in Rotterdam (Fantastic) she has been passionate about vintage printed material as long as she can remember. This passion is expressed in collage, paint and 3D recycle art. Recurring themes are women’s emancipation and protection of climate and peace. Influenced by pop art, surrealism and Dada, Marian produces committed works, colourful and witty.

The work of Studio Simone Klerks can be characterized as playful, expressive and passionate. Aspects such as color, shape and usage of specific materials, account for her specific style. The total picture has to be right. The goal of her work is creating a feeling of happiness for as much people as possible. Making them happy with a product, every time they see it, in order to give them experiences similar to her own experiences while being confronted
with any perfectly designed product. The passion for product design has arisen a long time ago. A study at Sint Lucas in Boxtel ensured that her interest in creativity became more specifically oriented towards product design. Since then she has followed several courses to broaden her professional knowledge. Currently she is studying to achieve a Bachelor's degree in product design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
De passie voor product design is al lange tijd geleden ontstaan. Een studie aan het Sint Lucas te Boxtel zorgde ervoor dat haar interesse in creativiteit specifieker werd gefilterd naar product design. Sindsdien heeft zij verschillende opleidingen gevolgd om haar kennis over het vak te verbreden. Op dit moment studeert zij aan de bachelor opleiding product design aan de Willem de Kooning Academy te Rotterdam.

Tessa Posthuma de Boer studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. After her final exams in 1993 she started working as a portrait photographer. Her portraits have appeared in many different newspapers and magazines, including De Volkskrant, Ajax Magazine, FD, National Geographic, VPRO Guide, Psychology Magazine, etc. and a large number of advertising cam-
paigns (Rabobank, Fiat, Postbank, Vodafone, PostNL to name a few). Tessa also often works for businesses, like Akzo Nobel, Staatsbosheer, VU Medical Center, Audi and KPN. And she is well known for her many author portraits on behalf of publishers. Tessa’s autonomous work is regularly exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad. After graduating at Sint Lucas in Boxtel, I started working as a scenery designer / builder for various theatre companies. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make a living out of it, so I was working as a freelancer as well as for one of my internship companies in stand construction. Nine years ago, the owner indicated that he would like to retire and wanted to sell the company. I took this opportunity and took over the stand construction company. After a number of successful years, I started to miss

Na mijn opleiding op het Sint Lucas in Boxtel ben ik aan de slag gegaan als decorontwerper/bouwer voor diverse theatergezelschappen. Negen jaar terug gaf de eigenaar van het standbouwbedrijf aan met pensioen te willen gaan en het bedrijf te willen verkopen. Ik greep deze kans aan en nam het standbouwbedrijf over. Na een aantal succesvolle jaren in de standbouw begon ik de creativiteit te missen. Ik besloot het roer om te gooien en zette de standbouw activiteiten op een laag pitje. De bedrijfshal op het industrieterrein werd ingewisseld voor een atelier op een creatieve broedplaats in Eindhoven en langzaam aan begon ik met het creëren van ruimtelijke objecten. Het werken aan een project zonder opdrachtgever of budget werkte erg bevrijdend. De koperen teardrop is één van deze projecten die nooit tot stand zou zijn gekomen uit een opdracht. the creativity. I decided to change course and put the stand construction activities on a low level. The hall on the industrial area was replaced for a studio on a creative breeding ground in Eindhoven. Slowly, I started creating special objects. Working on a project without a client or budget was very relieving. The copper teardrop is one of these projects that would never come out of an assignment. The material costs are too high and there are too many construction hours in it.
