CONNECTIONS 7 juni tot 3 oktober 2018 Verbindingen bestaan in vele vormen en verhoudingen. Bijvoorbeeld in menselijke relaties of de verbinding tussen de mens en de buitenwereld. Maar ook in (kunst)objecten die door combinaties van materieel een nieuwe constructie of patroon vormen. Verbinden is ook het streven van ons design & artemis platform. Op creatieve manieren leggen en tonen wij verbindingen, met ons kunsten design hotel als interactief toneel. De Dutch Designer spreekt….. “Ik zie dingen die op een mooie manier met elkaar verbonden kunnen worden, om zo een nieuw, verrassend geheel met een verhaal te creëren” De Nederlandse kunstenaar of designer ziet de wereld en haar elementen vanuit een ander perspectief, en maakt graag nieuwe verbindingen waardoor de meest verrassende designs met achterliggende gedachte worden ontworpen. Dutch design kreeg eind jaren tachtig pas bekendheid, maar werd direct stevig en gegrond op de kaart gezet. In een sneltreinvaart kregen verschillende designers internationale bekendheid. Dit mede dankzij het concept-denken, en het gebruik van diverse spraakmakende materialen in de designs.

Dutch Design & Connections De beroemde knotted chair van Marcel Wanders is gemaakt van geknoopt touw dat bestaat uit een kern van koolstofvezels en een top laag die verhard is met epoxyhars. De ladekast van tejo remy die bestaat uit een verzameling losse laden bijeengehouden met een riem. Een ander voorbeeld is Christien Meindertsma die verbindingen legt door verschillende materialen met een verhaal te combineren en te categoriseren. Het Ontwerp Met Nederlandse Inslag Vanuit een onderzoekende en uitdagende manier van ontwerpen, worden er nieuwe combinaties van materieel en gedachtengoed gemaakt. Op deze manier zijn de designers en kunstenaars niet alleen gericht op het gebruik van het object zelf, maar willen ze de wereld ook prikkelen. Kortom, Dutch Design brengt emotie los en brengt naast de verbinding van diverse materialen ook verbinding tussen mensen en hun wereld. Tijdens de expositie ‘Connections’, laten wij vanuit de nederlandse kunstenaar en designer hun kijk en creatie zien van de verschillende vormen van verbinding en hun invloed in de snel veranderende wereld van vandaag. Als bezoeker kun je ook al je zintuigen laten prikkelen door het fooddesign dat verbindt in al haar facetten.
CONNECTIONS June 7th until October 3rd 2018 Connections exist in many forms and proportions. For example in human relationships or the connection between mankind and the outside world. But also in (art) objects that form, a new construction or pattern by using impressive combinations of material. To connect is also the aim of our Design & ARTemis platform. In very creative ways we bind and show connections, with our art and design hotel as an interactive stage. The Dutch Designer speaks ... “I see things that can be connected in a beautiful way to create a new, surprising combination with a story” The Dutch artist or designer sees the world and its elements from a different perspective, and likes to make new connections that bring out the most surprising designs with an underlying idea. Dutch Design only became known at the end of the eighties, but was immediately put firmly on the map. Very quickly various Dutch designers gained international recognition. Partly thanks to the original concept-thinking, and the use and combination of high-profile materials.
Dutch Design & Connections The famous Knotted Chair by Marcel Wanders is made of knotted rope consisting of a core of carbon fibers and a top layer hardened with epoxy resin. The chest of drawers of Tejo Remy, which consists of a collection of separate drawers held together with a belt. Another example is Christien Meindertsma who makes connections by combining and categorizing different materials with a story. Design With A Dutch Touch.... From an investigative and challenging way of designing, new combinations of material and ideas are made. In this way, the designers and artists are not only focused on the use of the object itself, but also they want to stimulate the world. In short, Dutch Design releases emotion and, in addition to the connection of various materials, it also connects people and their world. During the exhibition ‘Connections’ we will show the vision and creation from the Dutch artist and designer, of the different forms of connections and their influence in the rapidly changing world of nowadays. As a visitor you can also stimulate all your senses by the food design that connects in all its facets.

ALEXANDRA DRENTH Borduurkunst | Embroidery alexandradrenth.nl
Borduurster Alexandra Drenth (1964), gevestigd in Amsterdam Noord creëert levendige en mystieke collages in textiel. Zij maakt gebruik van songteksten, fragmenten uit lyrische gedichten en poëzie. Alexandra combineert oud en nieuw borduurwerk en maakt daardoor tijdloze stukken. Het centrale thema in haar werk is de gevoelswereld, met name gezien vanuit een vrouwelijk perspectief. Haar werk voelt bevrijd, zit vol mystieke ervaringen, is soms melancholisch, uitkijkend naar een geliefde, aangevuld met natuurlijke elementen zoals planten en bloemen. Voor haar kleding reist ze terug naar het verleden. Materialen van een tijdloze plaats, een mix tussen sentiment, traditie en vergankelijkheid. Hergebruik van textiel is het startpunt voor al haar werk.
Embroiderer Alexandra Drenth (1964), based in Amsterdam creates vibrant and mystical textile collages. Taking inspiration from music lyrics and poetry, Alexandra combines old and new to create timeless pieces. Started as a photographer and oil painter she works mainly in textiles. The central theme in her work is sensitivity, particular seen from a female perspective, with exciting combinations of textile materials, the timeless character, between the old and the new. Releasing the traditional form makes her work liberating and gives new opportunities. Hand embroidered lyrics play an important role, they tell experiences of women lives, mystical experiences, melancholic, sometimes full of desire looking for a loved one, complemented by natural elements such as plants, flowers, in hand embroidery. For her clothing she travels back to the past. Materials from a timeless place, a mix between sentiment, tradition and transience. Re-use of textile materials is the starting point of all her work. Geïnspireerd door de kracht van woorden, vertaalt Jule Cats verhalen naar fysieke producten. De handgemaakte vazenserie IN DISGUISE is geïnspireerd op woningsloop binnen Nederlandse steden. In de afgelopen jaren is Jule Cats woonachtig geweest in huizen die op de nominatie stonden voor afbraak, waardoor ze ervoer hoe het is om gedwongen te moeten verhuizen. Haar serie IN DISGUISE brengt dit onderbelichte thema onder de aandacht. Verkrijgbaar in drie modellen: the Heart, Diamond en Rock. De nieuwe collectie RISE (2018) is gebaseerd op de behoefte om vast te houden aan herinneringen. Soms is het moeilijk om het verleden los te laten, maar noodzakelijk om verder te gaan en uit de as te herrijzen. De materiaalkeus komt voort uit de voorafgaande collectie IN DISGUISE, waarin verhalen van bewoners van sloopwoningen centraal stonden.

Inspired by the power of words, Jule Cats translates stories into physical products. The handmade series is inspired by home demolition within Dutch cities. For a few years Jule Cats has been living in houses that were on the list to be demolished. In this period she learned how it feels to be forced to leave your home. With this series, she reveals this theme that lies beneath the surface. Available in three models: the Heart, Diamond and Rock. The new collection RISE (2018) is based on the urge of holding on to memories. Sometimes letting go of the past is hard, but essential in order to move on and rise from the ashes. Koen Jacobs is een sieraden maker die recent is afgestudeerd aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Hij is gefascineerd door tegenstellingen en de spanning tussen tegenstrijdige waarden, zoals schoonheid en lelijkheid, natuurlijk en kunstmatig. Koen gelooft dat het één niet beter is dan het ander, maar dat ze elkaar versterken. Vaak komt zijn werk voort vanuit zijn liefde voor de de natuur en hoe de mens zich daartoe verhoudt. Voor de serie VERNIETIGDE SCHOONHEID heb ik de boom gebruikt als een symbolische verbinding tussen twee werelden, de boven- en onderwereld. Een boom haalt CO2 uit de lucht en geeft zuurstof terug aan de aarde zodat we kunnen ademen. Als een boom wordt gekapt, stopt dit systeem. Deze valt om, breek in stukken en maakt plaats voor nieuw leven. De boom staat voor mij symbool voor de oneindige cirkel van leven en dood, van creatie en vernietiging en precies dit proces van opbouw en afbraak is de manier waarop ik mijn sieraden heb gemaakt.
Recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Koen Jacobs is a jeweller who is fascinated by opposites and the tension in between contradicting values, such as beauty and ugliness, natural and artificial. Koen believes one is not better than the other, but they strengthen each other. Often his work originates from his love for the beauty of nature and how humankind relates to this. For the series DESTROYED BEAUTY I used the tree as a symbolic connection between the two worlds, the upper- and underworld. It takes CO2 from the air and gives oxygen back to the earth so we can breath. Cutting down a tree will stop this system. It will fall down, break in parts and give way for new life. For this reason, I used the tree as symbol for the never-ending circle of life and death, of creation and destruction and exactly this process of building up and breaking down was the way how I created my jewellery pieces. 12. | ART E MIS A MSTERDA M. De werken van borduurster Willy Schut bestaan uit een combinatie van schilderijen, appliceren en vrij machinaal borduren. Alle materialen die gebruikt worden krijgen allemaal de ruimte op goed tot hun recht te komen, garen, stof, inkt, verf, papier en druktechnieken. Haar inspiratie wordt gehaald uit dagelijkse gebeurtenissen. Nieuwe connecties, verloren contacten en het opdoen van nieuwe ervaringen. Inmiddels al enkele jaren aan het werk in thema verbindingen. De connecties die mogelijk zijn door mens en materiaal, maar ook de verbindingen die verbroken of afgesloten zijn. Het beeld wordt laag over laag opgebouwd met behulp van verschillende materialen en doormiddel van machinaal borduurwerk met elkaar verbonden.

“I let my hands do the thinking and give materials all the space they need”; says Willy. She finds her inspiration from daily events. Beginning, by sketching created by images or memories she’s moved by. This can be a word or specific material like a nice dust rag or a beautiful piece of antique lace. Originally Willy makes paintings, with the colour, structure, expressive strength and brilliance of textile. She strives for renewal by use of other material a.o. photographs, paper, paperboard, tyvek in her textile.

Dit opende de weg naar de verdere ontwikkeling van de stabiele 3D brei-structuur van PLECTERE. introduceert meer privacy en comfort, tactiliteit en warmte in ruimtes en tempert het geluid door zijn uitstekende akoestische eigenschappen en PLECTERE draagt bij aan een betere beleving van de ruimte door de gebruikers. This opened the way for the further development of the stable 3D knit structure of PLECTERE. De Bollelamp van sociale firma Binthout is een lasergesneden hanglamp van duurzaam hout. Door samen te werken met Hollands Hout en Stadshout, redt Binthout Nederlandse bomen van de versnipperaar. In de houtzagerij biedt Binthout werk aan ongeveer twaalf mensen met een arbeidshandicap. Samen creeren ze prachtige handgemaakte lampen. Nederlands ambacht dat op een sociale manier tot bloei komt. Duurzaam Dutch design en daarom heel fijn! Studio Perspective biedt Nederlandse ontwerpers die sociaal ondernemen en zo werk bieden aan mensen met afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt een extra verkoopkanaal met als doel om zo nóg meer werk te creëren. The Bollelamp by social firm Binthout is a laser-cut hanging lamp made from sustainable wood. By working together with Hollands Hout and Stadshout, Binthout rescues Dutch trees from the shredder. In the sawmill, Binthout employs about twelve people with a work disability. Together they create beautiful handmade lamps. Dutch craft that flourishes in a social way. Studio Perspective offers Dutch designers or social entrepreneurs who work with people with a distance to the labour market an extra sales channel. Together we can create even more work. Beeldend kunstenaar Laura Brouwer (1993) studeerde in 2016 af als docent beeldende kunst en vormgeving bij ArtEZ Zwolle. Haar afstudeerwerk weerspiegelde haar passie voor water en de zwemsport in het algemeen. Ze werkt veel met digitale media en wordt geïnspireerd door kunstenaars als Piet Mondriaan en Mark Rothko, en hun zoektocht naar de ervaring van transcendentie. Naast een parttimebaan in het zwemonderwijs, werkt ze onder andere aan een nieuwe, interactieve lesmethode beeldende vorming voor het primair onderwijs en ontwikkelt ze workshops voor leerkrachten over het interactief gebruik van een digibord. Voor zowel haar educatieve afstudeeronderzoek, als haar kunsttheoretische onderzoek werd ze genomineerd voor de scriptieprijs 2016.
Artist Laura Brouwer (1993) graduated in fine arts and design in education at ArtEZ University of Arts in 2016. Her graduation work reflected her passion for water and swimming in general. She likes to work with digital media and is inspired by artists such as Piet Mondriaan and Mark Rothko and their search for transcendental experience. Next to a part time job as a swimming teacher, she works on new interactive teaching methods in fine arts for primary education and she develops workshops for teachers about interactively using digital blackboards, amongst other projects. She was nominated for the 2016 Thesis Award, for both her educational graduation research and het art theory research projects.

Wilma Lakké is altijd al iemand geweest die met haar handen bezig geweest is. Met behulp van haar beelden wilt zij minimale vormen laten zien en een maximale spanning, door holle en bolle vlakken en delen elkaar af te wisselen. Door het verwijderen van niet relevante delen, andere te abstraheren en belangrijke delen te overdrijven ontstaan er eenvoudige, krachtige beelden. Door de beelden de kleur rood worden de vormen versterkt. Ik sta mezelf toe om aan iets te beginnen zonder te weten waar het toe leidt.
“I remove all of the unnecessary in my sculptures, so the exciting core becomes visible.”
Wilma Lakké ‘s always been someone who is engaged with her hands. With her sculptures she wants to give the message of minimum shapes and maximum tension, by alternating concave and convex surfaces. Removing not relevant parts, abstract the other simple, powerful sculptures are created. Bu using the color red it will empower the shape of the sculpture. I allow myself to start something without knowing how it will end.

Opgeleid aan de Rietveld academie als docent Tweede graad tekenen gaf Kees al jaren lang les op een middelbare school in de Bijlmer. Door het gebruik van materialen zoals takken, hout, papier, luchtballonen en karton zijn grotendeels van zijn beelden organisch. De ontwerpen worden eerst in 2D gemaakt, daarna de ruimtelijke uitbeelding. De motivatie om aan de slag te gaan is het spel-element, de onverwachte mogelijkheden van het materiaal en de manier waarop het werk zich ontwikkelt.
Trained at the Rietveld Academy as a teacher of second degree signs for many years Kees gave class at a high school in the Bijlmer. Due to the use of materials such as branches, wood, paper, air balloons and cardboard most sculptures are largely pictured organic. The designs are first made in 2D, then the spatial depiction. The motivation to get started is the game element, the unexpected possibilities of the material and the way the work develops.

Joris Link (1979) volgde zijn opleiding aan de Academie voor kunst en design, ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Hij exposeert zijn werk sinds 2001 in binnen en buitenland. De keramische sculpturen van Joris Link gaan over vormen, structuren en contrasten. Vaak met herhaling, opgebouwd uit in serie geproduceerde elementen die, afhankelijk van de ruimte, op verschillende manieren worden gecombineerd tot grotere sculpturen. De sculpturen zijn vaak monumentaal maar kunnen ook kleine objecten zijn. Ze prikkelen de verbeelding en vormen een relatie met de omgeving. De sculpturen op zich geven de omvang meestal niet weg. Ze kunnen gemakkelijk heel klein of groot zijn. Inspiratie komt van wiskundige vormen, moleculen maar ook van landschappen en de natuur. Kenmerkend voor Joris Link zijn werk is zijn eigen idioom van vorm en gebruik van kleuren met prachtig vakmanschap.
Joris Link (1979) received his education at the Academy for art and design, ’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. He has been exhibiting his work since 2001 in the Netherlands and abroad. The ceramic sculptures of Joris Link are about shapes, structures and contrasts. Often using repetition, constructed of serial produced elements which, depending on the space, are combined in different ways to become bigger sculptures. The sculptures are often monumental but can also be small objects. They tickle the imagination and form a relationship with its surroundings.The sculptures in itself usually do not give away its size. They can easily be very small or huge. Inspiration comes from mathematical forms, molecules but also landscapes and nature.Characteristic of Joris Link his work is his own idiom of form and use of colours displaying beautiful craftmanship.

De Scraplight Moon is een hanglamp van Graypants en wordt gemaakt van gerecycled karton. De lampen uit de Scraplight serie worden met een laser snijder gemaakt en vervolgens laagje voor laagje met de hand opgebouwd. De lampen worden niet alleen gemaakt van duurzaam materiaal, maar worden ook op een sociale manier geproduceerd door mensen van sociale onderneming IBN in Veghel. IBN biedt kansen aan mensen die het zonder steun niet redden op de arbeidsmarkt. Studio Perspective biedt Nederlandse ontwerpers die sociaal ondernemen en zo werk bieden aan mensen met afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt een extra verkoopkanaal met als doel om zo nóg meer werk te creëren. Alle producten worden in Nederland gemaakt. Lokaal én sociaal. Elke aankoop bij Studio Perspective een positieve bijdrage levert aan de arbeidsparticipatie van de makers. Elke aankoop heeft impact!
The Scraplight Moon is a Graypants pendant lamp, made of recycled cardboard. The lamps from the Scraplight series are made by using a lasercutter and then built up by hand layer by layer. The lamps are not only made of durable material, but are also produced by people from social enterprise IBN in Veghel. IBN offers opportunities to people with a distance to the labour market . Studio Perspective offers Dutch designers or social entrepreneurs who work with people with a distance to the labour market an extra sales channel. Together we can create even more work. All products are made in the Netherlands. Local and social. Every purchase at Studio Perspective makes a positive contribution to the labor participation of the makers. Sven Hulsbergen Henning combineert verschillende ontwerpmethodes op een manier dat deze elkaar aanvullen. In zijn jeugd werd hij omringt door kunst en antiek. De wijze waarop de esthetische kenmerken van verschillende stijlen inspeelde op hart en geest intrigeerde hem. Hieruit werd het idee geboren te zoeken naar een vormgeving die de beleving van de verschillende stijlen met elkaar zou kunnen verenigen. Na een studie bouwkunde in Eindhoven en Brazilië was hij werkzaam als architect en deed hij de meubelvakschool in Amsterdam. Zijn studio, HenningMade, creëert minutieus gedetailleerde hedendaagse meubelkunst die toekomst en verleden samenbrengt in één moment. Niet functionaliteit of comfort maar het overbrengen van een vonk die inspireert en verbindt is de drijfveer achter zijn ontwerpen.
Sven Hulsbergen Henning, uses styles from different eras in ways they are complementary to one another. Growing up surrounded by antiques and art he was intrigued by how distinct aesthetic qualities of figurative and abstract styles influence heart and mind and how they could fuse into contemporary design. After studying in Eindhoven and São Paulo, while working as an architect, he attended the vocational school for wood, furniture and interior in Amsterdam. His studio, HenningMade, now creates highly detailed contemporary pieces with a presence reminiscent of bespoke antique furniture. Not practicality or comfort but sparking exuberance and imagination is the core function of his pieces.

Maartje Blans’ (1975) werk bestaat uit schilderijen en installaties waarbij ze speelt met verschillende lagen, schaduw, licht, lijn, ritme en ruimte. De resultaten zijn ongebruikelijke “schilderijen” met een zeer sculpturale aard die de behoefte van de kunstenaar belichamen om los te breken van het tweedimensionale oppervlak en de grenzen van de bepaalde ruimte van het traditionele doek te overschrijden. Blans wordt geboeid door verval, tijdelijkheid en de schoonheid van vergankelijkheid. Hierbij probeert zij, in haar werk, een sfeer te creëren die de beschouwer prikkelt en aanspoort om de meerdere lagen in haar werk te ontdekken; lagen in het werk, de ruimte en bij zichzelf. Dat hij zich verliest in sfeer, stilte en zoekt naar betekenis.
Maartje Blans (1975) has created over the last decades a varied body of work, spanning from paintings to installation art. Besides studying and working in Amsterdam and New York, she also worked and lived in Beijing for more than 5 years. Maartje Blans creates multi-layered artworks of mixed media, which she composes directly on the walls, on panels, on glass, on canvas or in frames. The results are unusual “paintings” endowed with a highly sculptural nature that embody the artist’s need to break away from the bi-dimensional surface and go beyond the limits of the definite space provided by the traditional canvas. These artworks create an atmosphere that invites viewers to explore different levels of meaning and to lose themselves in the many layers of the work, in the space around them, but especially in the exploration of the Self.
