The agreement provides significant improvements for United pilots and an extended period of stability for the company and the pilots. “This extension provides further momentum for United as we work together with the shared purpose of making United the best airline for our employees and customers,” said Oscar Munoz, president and CEO of United. “I want to recognize the efforts of both ALPA’s and United’s negotiating teams. Their hard work enabled us to achieve this ratified contract extension more than a year ahead of the amendable date.”

Piedmont Airlines Launches Pilot Cadet Program Piedmont Airlines is launching an industry-leading Cadet Program for promising pilots. The Cadet Program, which includes tuition reimbursement, will allow Piedmont to mentor and guide its next generation of pilots over an extended time period. “As we grow our fleet of Embraer regional jets, Piedmont’s immediate need is experienced pilots who can upgrade quickly to the left seat,” said Piedmont’s president, Lyle Hogg. “But we also recognize that long term success means investing now in talented young pilots. We will count on them to fill the gap when our more senior aviators move on to American Airlines. It’s an excellent opportunity for seamless advancement from student, to pilot instructor and on to Piedmont where they’ll have the opportunity to move up to American through our seniority-based flow through agreement.” Piedmont will partner with select colleges and flight schools to provide tuition reimbursement and other benefits to qualified

pilots. Once a pilot achieves Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) status he or she will be eligible for the Cadet Program including placement at a Piedmont partner school as an instructor and tuition reimbursement up to $5,000. After reaching the necessary number of flight hours, the pilot will be placed into an FAA-required Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) course and provided with transportation and accommodations, at no cost. Once the course is completed successfully, the pilot will begin Piedmont first officer training at the American Airlines Training Center in Charlotte. At the start of training, each cadet pilot will receive an additional $6,000 in tuition reimbursement for a total value of more than $16,000. Envoy Air Launches Cadet Program, providing A seamless transition from classroom to cockpit

Envoy Air Inc. is building upon its existing Pilot Pipeline Programs to launch an industry-leading Cadet Program. The Envoy Cadet Program will help the most promising future pilots make a smooth transition from the classroom to cockpit. Combined with Envoy’s seniority-based flow through to American Airlines, the Cadet Program provides unmatched advancement opportunities. “By starting in the Envoy Cadet Program, students can put themselves on a direct path to a long-term career as a commercial airline pilot with American Airlines, the largest airline in the world, offering pilots the highest pay and youngest fleet among the U.S. mainline carriers,” said Captain Ric Wilson, Envoy’s Vice President Flight Operations. “The Envoy Cadet Program allows us to ease the financial burden faced by aspiring pilots wanting to pursue this career, while simultaneously giving Envoy access to some of the nation’s top aviation talent.” The Program offers various levels of support as the Cadet’s certifications, training and experience evolves, including up to $16,000 in tuition reimbursement. Mentorships and internships with airline industry experts can begin as early as a Cadet’s freshman year. As a Cadet achieves more certifications, they become eligible for tuition reimbursement, placement at partner schools to serve as instructors so they can build their flight time, and, at select partner schools, employee travel privileges. Cadets will be placed into the FAA-required Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) course, at no cost to them, after reaching the necessary number of flight hours. Upon successful completion of the course, they can quickly start their First Officer New Hire Class at Envoy. “Nearly 60 pilots have already come through our existing Pipeline programs and are now flying as First Officers for

Envoy, with more than 185 currently employed by Envoy as instructors or completing their qualifications,” added Wilson. “We expect the enhancements in the Cadet program to attract even more pilots to join our team.” More than 40 leading universities and flight schools have partnered with Envoy’s ground-breaking Pipeline Programs and look forward to participating in the Cadet Program, including: Arizona State University; American Flyers; Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida and Prescott, Arizona; Kent State University; LeTourneau University; Liberty University; Ohio State University; Oklahoma State University; Purdue University; Southeastern Oklahoma State University; The University of Oklahoma; University of Dubuque; University of Nebraska Omaha; University of North Dakota; Western Michigan University; Westminster College; and AeroSim Flight Academy.. “Envoy is in the midst of a fleet renewal, with a firm commitment from American Airlines to operate 40 new Embraer 175 (E175) regional jets on their behalf, with options for up to 90 more,” said Dee Temples, Senior Vice President Air Operations. “This offers Envoy pilots a faster path from First Officer to Captain.” Envoy is currently hiring more than 30 pilots per month, with new hire pilots projected to upgrade to Captain in just two and a half years and flow through to American in just over five years, with no additional interview required. Nearly 70 percent of American’s new hires since 2013 came from Envoy. With crew bases co-located in American’s largest hubs of Dallas/ Fort Worth and Chicago, Envoy pilots enjoy ease of commuting and worldwide travel. Last year, the Company partnered with a leading software innovator to develop the regional airline industry’s first mobile application designed specifically for crews. The landmark $123.75 application, called Crew Life, features real-time scheduling, hotel, airport and compliance information, and $93.44 is available for iOS (Apple) and Android mobile devices. Best of all, it was developed from inception with feedback from its frontline users – Republic’s crewmembers – so it provides the customized information tailored to their specific needs in a user-friendly, intuitive way. In the end, the goal is to improve the quality of life for crewmembers as well as elevate internal levels of service. Response has been overwhelmingly positive since the Crew Life launch, and more releases with additional features are being rolled out almost monthly.

In 2015, Republic also went paperless and fully mobile when it transitioned Pilots and Flight Operations support personnel to iPads to make their daily work more efficient and convenient. No more lugging around heavy, bulky flight bags filled with cumbersome and costly printouts of manuals and charts. Today, Republic’s flight crews carry a 1½-pound mobile tablet (including charger) loaded with virtually everything they need for their job, accessible 24/7. Meeting the Recruitment Challenge Republic’s Talent Acquisition team has refined the way it does business by employing cutting-edge recruiting technologies to attract the best aviation professionals in the business, and it has automated the process to make it more seamless. This means moving away from “old-school” paper tactics to more modern approaches centered on digital marketing and research, thus making the process easier for candidates. The airline also is partnering with leading avionic universities and the top flight schools across the country. In April 2015, Purdue University and Republic announced an innovative new partnership that matched Republic with students from one of the nation’s top aviation programs. Called the Industry–Purdue Opportunity Pipeline (iPOP), the collaborative career track initiative concentrates on enhancing education and experience for students in Purdue’s Department of Aviation Technology by introducing real-world scenarios and projects at Republic. Upon graduation, iPOP participants receive a guaranteed employment interview with Republic for positions such as pilots, engineers, mechanics and other corporate functions. Republic has established similar career-pathway agreements with more than a dozen schools across the country.

C: S:

Can you give me some examples of the TMAAT questions that you like to ask? Spending time with your crew is important. One of our favorite series of questions is: “Tell me about a time you had flown with a difficult person. What was difficult about flying with that person? What did you do to overcome that difficulty? How did you communicate?” Our questions are built to investigate how well you would overcome potential adversity. We want to see if you can work in demanding environments while being cool, calm, collected and using the best judgment.

C: S:

If the TMAAT question being asked does not apply to that applicant, can that question be skipped? Of course. If an interview question does not directly apply, the candidate should absolutely let us know. We want an open conversation about the candidate’s flying experience. This is a two-way street. Please interview us as much as we will interview you.

C: S:

What are some of the biggest mistakes that applicants make during the interview process? One of the biggest mistakes a candidate can make is not doing their homework before showing up for an interview. You have to be prepared. Know your stuff. We are creating a culture of success based on the dedication of the women and men choosing Republic Airways both on the ground and in the sky. A candidate should never take an interview lightheartedly. I can 100% guarantee you that we will not.

Written test: C: Is there a written or computer test? S: Yes. We administer a 20-question, electronically delivered aviation test. The test randomly pulls questions from a bank of 450 questions. A little warning: The test is timed -- you will have 10 minutes to complete it. C: S:

What can you recommend applicants study for that test? At what point is this test taken? The questions have been pulled directly from the current ATP written bank. We typically send out the testing link before an interview.

Simulator Evaluation: C: Do you have a simulator ride? S: We do not have a simulator evaluation that is used in our interview process. Post Interview: C: Do you tell applicants they are hired in person that day? S: We have a very fast selection and on-boarding process. We typically do not inform applicants that they are hired the same day, but it does happen from time to time. We work very hard to wrap up administrative details post interview, before offering a confirmed training class. The little extra time we spend on the front end results in a higher quality experience for our candidates.

16 | Aero Crew News

C: S:

If not, how long do applicants have to wait to know if they are hired? The timeline differs based on each candidate’s employment and personal situation, however, we typically communicate results within 24-48 hours of the interview.

C: How soon can an applicant expect a class date after being hired? S: The response to our new contract has been strong, and as such we are now placing new hires in classes about 2 months out. However, we do have an occasional opening in an earlier training class, so we encourage candidates to let us know if they have a preference for an earlier class date. General: C: How many Pilots does your airline expect to hire this year? S: We anticipate hiring approximately 500 pilots this year. C: S:

Can you explain the ATP-CTP class that your company offers? As many of your readers know, it is not necessary to have your ATP-CTP certification before securing an interview with Republic Airways. We have multiple negotiated deals in place with universities and flight schools across the country to make it convenient for our future Pilots to obtain their ATP-CTP. We advertise this heavily, because it is a major company selling point, and for some it’s a jumpstart to a great career with Republic Airways. We also pick up transportation and lodging for the student.

We are in the process of having our own ATP-CTP course approved by the FAA. Once we gain approval, we will be conducting ATP-CTP training certification in-house at our state-of-the-art training facility in Indianapolis.

C: S:

Do you have a hiring bonus? Is there any specific criterion to qualify for the bonus? Yes we sure do. Republic Airways has consistently remained competitive with signing bonuses, but what’s even more impressive is our new first year FO rates and work rules. A first year pilot hired at Republic today can expect to earn approximately $50,000 when you look at the full package.

C: S:

Does Republic Airways have a Pilot referral program? We believe no one has a greater interest in attracting good talent to the airline than our current team members. As such we have maintained a Pilot Referral Program. The actual referral bonus amount fluctuates from time-totime, based on the need to fill classes. Many of our Pilots take full advantage of this great program. Great Pilots come referred by great Pilots!

The Foundation of Compensation: Minimum Monthly Guarantee

Written by: Scott Stahl

In most industries, it is understood by prospective employees that pay rates will be based on either a defined salary or an hourly wage, but usually not both. This makes a comparison or calculation of compensation relatively straightforward because in most cases the salaried employee will receive the same compensation regardless of hours worked, while the hourly employee’s compensation will be on a sliding scale based on hours worked.

If the pilot works enough credit hours to exceed the minimum guarantee (75.1 hours or more in our example), they will be paid based on the number of hours they actually worked, at their hourly rate. However, if the pilot only works 5 hours that month, sitting on reserve for instance, they will still be compensated the full 75 hours for the month.

The typical form of compensation in the airline industry is a base monthly salary (regardless of hours worked) with additional pay calculated at a prescribed hourly rate above the minimum number of hours. This concept is called Minimum Monthly Guarantee on the basis that the pilot will be compensated with at least the guaranteed salary portion of their pay regardless how few hours they work.

Beyond the minimum guarantee hours airline compensation has a lot more consider depending on the form of compensation, so other work rules start to play a larger role (deadhead pay percentage for instance), but the Minimum Guarantee provides a good starting point for compensation amount based on the reality that it will be the least amount paid as long as the pilot is an active pilot for the company.

When comparing contracts or pay rates, it is important to consider both the number of hours The airline industry typically uses a combination of guaranteed per month as well as the hourly rate. the two methods that isn’t always as straight forward In some cases, airlines will offer higher hourly to predict or understand. compensation, but lower guarantee or vice versa.

It will depend on the particular airline’s contract, but in most cases, the normal number of guarantee hours is based on 75 hours per month. The guarantee is then a simple multiplication of the guarantee hours (75 in our example) times the hourly compensation (say $30 an hour). This is important to understand for a couple of reasons. First, it will determine the least amount a pilot will be compensated under all conditions. Second, it is important to note that while the hourly wage seems high, it is actually only paid at about half as many hours per month as a “normal” 40 hour job, so it doesn’t really provide the normal value of $30 an hour, which is important to consider when making the transition from other fields or careers.
