Letters to the Editor Craig, What your article says and what any Qatar Airways pilot I’ve spoken with are quite different. Your article says absolutely nothing about actual work life of the pilots, hours, layovers, management relations, upgrades, cultural, differences, pay, cost of living, Doha... It’s nicely written, but doesn’t help any pilot actually considering going there IMO. Thanks, Mark S, Upper Moreland, PA Mark, The articles that we publish are not written by us, but the airline themselves. Unfortunately they have restriction on what can be published in Aero Crew News. Having worked two job fairs that Qatar Airways has attendant I know that their recruitment team is willing to answer any and all questions related to working and living in Doha. Both times they have brought line Captains to talk with prospective new hires and discuss life on the line. I will do what I can to find out more information for you the next time that I speak with them. Thank you, Craig D. Pieper Editor in Chief We gladly accept and encourage letters to the editor. These letters will be reviewed and published at the sole discretion of the Editor. Please limit your letters to the Editor to a maximum of 200 words. The latest aviation industry hiring news and more.
United recently announced a new strategic partnership which will allow them to acquire an approximate 5 percent stake in Azul Brazilian Airlines (AD), Brazil’s third-largest airline, paving the way for United to cooperate on a range of customer benefits including code sharing of flights (subject to government approval), expanded connection opportunities on routes between the U.S. and Brazil, in addition to other points in North and South America, and joint loyalty-program participation.
ExpressJet is excited to begin issuing Electronic Flight Bags to all our pilots in the coming weeks. After putting several industry-leading tablets through operational trials, ExpressJet has selected the Microsoft Surface 3 tablet powered by Windows 10. The new EFBs will replace paper charts and manuals, and all revisions will update over Wi-Fi networks, significantly reducing off-duty pilot workload. Our EFBs will be provided for free to all pilots, and they will own the device which can be used as a personal tablet while off-duty. “ExpressJet is proud to give our pilots the best technology available for our electronic flight bags, and we’re honored to be the first airline to launch Windows 10 on the Surface 3 with the Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro app for our pilots,” said Brad Sheehan, Vice President of Flight Operations, ExpressJet Airlines. Introducing EFBs is expected to remove 80 pounds of paper and excess crew baggage from our airplanes. The decreased weight will result in over 1,100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions saved annually. This project will solidify ExpressJet Airlines as the smart choice for new pilots and its existing aviators, both in our commitment to continually invest in new technology and our stewardship of the environment.

f there were one word to describe Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation, it would be resilient.
Air Wisconsin’s resiliency has been a primary strength since even before our founding in 1965. The people of Appleton, Wisconsin – and specifically the city’s business community – refused to take no for an answer when a regional operator dropped Appleton from its route schedule in the early 1960s. So, as resilient people would do, they created their own airline. Since then, we have flown more than a dozen aircraft types to almost every state in the continental U.S. and many Canadian provinces. Currently, we operate as a US Airways Express carrier (soon to be American Eagle) and we have a fleet of 71 aircraft that

operates almost 500 flights a day, carrying nearly seven million passengers annually. This year, we are proud to celebrate our 50-year anniversary. Throughout this time, we have strived to create a stable environment for our pilots in an evolving industry. We have done this by making smart, strategic decisions and by staying at the forefront of innovation. One of the many examples of how we’ve been a leader in innovation is the use of our after-market ACARS units. These units enable us to program pilot-friendly features that reduce the flightdeck workload and provide feedback not seen at other carriers To build on this legacy of stability, Air Wisconsin recently announced a multi-year extension to our current flying contract with American Airlines.
“Air Wisconsin has a fleet of 71 aircraft that operates almost 500 flights a day, carrying nearly seven million passengers annually
Pilot interviews currently take place in Philadelphia, and involve a quick quiz and a face-to-face interview that are focused on getting to know our applicants and assessing their technical skills. We welcome you to join our hard-working, enthusiastic and customer service-focused team.

Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation is the largest privately held regional airline in the United States. Having reached 50 years of operation in 2015, Air Wisconsin has proven our stability and success by providing superior service in flight and ground handling operations. We are pleased to announce our multi-year contract extension as a regional express carrier with the new American Airlines, flying to 26 states and 70 cities; as far North as Canada, and as far South as Florida!
Our focus on safety, professionalism and efficiency has meant we are consistently among the performance leaders compared to our peers. This is due to the outstanding aviators we have at Air Wisconsin.

Exclusive interview with Air Wisconsin’s Recruiter Specialist, Johnathan S. Parrish Craig: What can an applicant do to increase their chances of being called for an interview? Johnathan: Applicants can contact us directly at pilotrecruiting@airwis.com and provide their resumes for immediate review and feedback of their current qualifications. C:
How critical is it to attend a job fair to get an interview?
J:
We encourage all candidates to attend job fairs to have the opportunity to meet with members of the Pilot Recruitment team and increase their visibility while receiving grounded feedback that would increase their chances of receiving an interview opportunity.
C:
What is the best way to prepare for an interview with your company?
J:
We recommend that each candidate conduct research on Air Wisconsin Airlines to understand our values, our mission and how they can be a contributing member to the team. Review our history, research our contract and truly have an understanding of the purpose in “why” they would prefer to be a member of our company. Candidates should have the ability to express their desire to fly with us and clearly demonstrate their quality of character and technical proficiency.
C:
Do you recommend that applicants get to your headquarters city the day before and get a hotel room for the night?
J:
We strongly recommend all candidates make accommodations at least 1 day prior to the interview.
C:
What kind of questions can an applicant expect to be asked?
J:
During the interview our team looks to gain further insight of the candidates’ judgment in regards to safety, customer service and overall experiences. They will be evaluated on their proficiency with approach plate charts and competency of general aviation principles and their reaction to high intensity situations.
C:
If the TMAAT question being asked does not apply to that applicant can that question be skipped?
12 | Aero Crew News
J:
As an Air Wisconsin Plank is to meet or exceed performance expectations, we encourage all candidates to prepare in a fashion that will yield success.
C:
What are some of the biggest mistakes that applicants make during the interview process?
J:
The biggest mistake an applicant can make during an interview is presenting a derogatory distraction, i.e. ungroomed, intense odor and poor manors. Applicants that have not performed their research of the company demonstrate a lack of preparation, professionalism and attention to detail. Candidates who do not provide full disclosure during the interview bring impact to their professionalism and integrity illustrating a potential of a future concern. Lastly, professional appearance; our pilots are professionally dressed, groomed and maintained. This is the culture that makes Air Wisconsin the best and what we seek to attract in all of our candidates.
C:
Is there a written or computer test?
J:
As an evaluation metric, candidates are given a 50 question test with question deriving from the ATP-written. This test allows our team to gauge a Pilots technical competency and further provides insight as to the experience level of the candidate.
C:
Do you tell applicants they are hired in person that day?
J:
In cases that we have an outstanding candidate that meets all qualifications and they are prepared to take the next step, we will offer an on the spot offer.
C:
How long do applicants have to wait to know if they are hired?
J:
We hire pilots upon a successful completion of a 10-year background check, a FBI criminal history fingerprinting check, and a pre-employment drug screen.
C:
How many pilots does your airline expect to hire this year?
J:
Air Wisconsin will hire 200 pilots for 2015

401K Matching
Written by: Scott Stahl
O
ne of the more overlooked forms of compensation from a company is the amount the company contributes to an employee’s retirement. Of course, the first version of this was usually a company provided pension. However, as times changed the instrument that commonly replaced the pension was the 401K, which drew its growth from a combination of employee, sourced funding and potentially employer sourced matching contribution. The amount the employer matches, and the manner in which they match it can have a significant impact on the employee’s total career compensation amount. However, this amount of compensation is accrued over years of employment and is not usually usable until retirement age, so it often goes overlooked by prospective employees. Another frequently overlooked advantage of the 401K is that the income put into the fund is before taxes are withheld, and is tax exempt until retirement, which maximizes fund growth (up to a predetermined maximum IRS limit). Finally, 401K funds are usually transferable so that as a pilot continues along the normal path of career progression, the fund can usually be transferred from company to company, allowing a pilot to maximize their retirement over their career. In many cases, if the employer also offers 401K matching, then the employee can take advantage of the company’s additional funding to increase the retirement growth even more. The amount of matching will depend on the company, but should be one of the things considered when choosing an airline. A difference of even a few percent can make a huge difference to a retirement account over the course of a career. The amount of money a company will match is usually based on the employee’s contribution up to a certain percent. For instance, Company A might match up to 6% of the employee’s contribution, while Company B doesn’t match the employee’s contribution at all. Essentially, as long as the employee at Company A contributes at least 6% of their income to the 401K, the company will match that amount. If the employee contributes less than the 6% maximum, then the company will match whatever the employee contributes below that amount. If the employee contributes the full 6% in the case of Company A, then they are effectively getting 12% contribution including the company match. Compared to Company B, this is double the retirement funding. The way the company pays the match may also vary. In some cases, the company will match the employee funding at every paycheck. In other cases, they may match quarterly. The way the
match is paid, should be stipulated in the contract of the particular company. There will also be situations where the employee may have to be at the company a certain amount of time in order to keep the employer contribution. For instance, Company A may require an employee to be on the payroll for a minimum of 1 year in order to keep any employer contributions while Company B may allow the employee to keep the company’s additions without any limitations. In other cases, the amount of contribution may be graduated so that as the employee puts in more years of service, the company increases the match. This is a very large form of compensation because it has the potential to affect the value of a retirement fund by up to several hundred thousand dollars or more over the course of a career. Most fund companies that provide the 401K funds for companies have calculators that will estimate what the different contributions will produce over the years, depending on percentage contribution, expected return and other variables. Given the large effect of contribution changes to retirement funds, it is important to know what the prospective company’s options for funds and matching contribution are in order to maximize the value of available retirement funds

Interview with Bill Kennedy
Sr. Manager of Pilot Recruiting for United Airlines
Pre Interview: Craig: How do you select applicants to be brought in
Interview: C:
Do you recommend that applicants get to your headquarters city the day before and get a hotel room for the night?
B:
That is up to the preference of the applicant. However, all interviews are conducted in Denver and depending on a candidate’s point of origin, Denver could be a challenging day trip.
C:
Can you walk me through a typical day of interviews?
B:
Applicants are assigned an interview slot between 0800 and 1700 which includes a panel interview and simulator evaluation. They are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled time to complete administrative paperwork. The panel interview consists of a United pilot and HR Recruiter and lasts about 60 minutes. The simulator evaluation is with a United pilot and lasts about 90 minutes including briefing and de-briefing. Applicants have opportunities to candidly speak to our company pilots and are encouraged to ask questions.
C:
What kind of questions can an applicant expect to be asked?
B:
There are a series of questions during the panel interview targeting specific behaviors from previous professional experiences. Past behavior predicts future performance so we seek to learn about real experiences instead of hypothetical situations. What did an applicant do versus what they would do?
C:
Can you give me some examples of the TMAAT questions that you like to ask?
B:
We continue to alternate specific questions asked each interview, but applicants can expect to be asked about personal experiences within leadership, team work, and customer service among other competencies.
for an interview? Bill:
To begin the process, qualified and selected applicants are invited to take an online Job Fit assessment. Applicants who continue to meet the desired criteria following the assessment are invited to participate in a Skills Assessment and a panel interview at our Flight Training Center in Denver, Colorado.
C:
Can you explain the point system associated with online application process and what types of things count for points?
B:
Applicants are evaluated on a variety of areas that may include but not limited to education and academic successes, flight training experiences, leadership roles, achievements and industry involvement.
C:
What can an applicant do to increase their chances of being called for an interview?
B:
It is important to keep online applications updated at least once every 180 days including all certifications and renewed expiration dates. These all must be current in order to be considered current for an interview.
C:
How critical is it to attend a job fair to get an interview?
B:
While it is a great opportunity for candidates and United to meet and learn more about one another, it is not a requirement to attend.
C: B:
What is the best way to prepare for an interview with your company? Applicants should be prepared to talk about themself and their specific, real life examples and experiences. Aviation and non-aviation examples are appropriate and acceptable.
