Hi Craig, I am really enjoying the grid you have in each edition of your magazine. I find one item puzzling though. While you have awesome information to compare airline to airline you don’t shed much light on 1st year pay. I don’t know why you show “FO Top Out Pay” and nothing about first year pay. I would certainly hope I don’t hit FO Top Out Pay at any airline I go to. I would hope to upgrade before I see that figure. Could you please add first year pay to your grid? Also is there any chance that American, Alaska, Delta or United will be attending your job fair in September? Thanks, Jonathan

Hi Jonathan, We do compare first year pay on page 35 and 47 in a bar graph format. While it doesn’t show the exact numbers it does show a direct comparison to other airlines. There are other sources that offer pay charts to compare the exact hourly rate. We wanted to offer something more unique to our pilots. Allegiant Announces Vote to Ratify Pilot Contract with International Brotherhood of Teamsters executive officer. “It is a good deal for our pilots while supporting our unique business model and ensuring a bright future working together on behalf of our customers.” Allegiant announced that pilots represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) have voted to ratify their first contract agreement with the Company. Allegiant and IBT have been negotiating in mediated sessions with the National Mediation Board since February 2014. “Having the first contract agreement with our pilots is an important milestone, and opens a new chapter for Allegiant,” said Maury Gallagher, chairman and chief

“This contract represents years of hard work at the negotiation table, and we would like to thank IBT, the National Mediation board and all who have been involved,” said Jude Bricker, chief operating officer. “Their efforts have brought us to an agreement that improves the lives of pilots, makes Allegiant highly competitive across the industry for wages and benefits and puts us in a strong position to move forward together.” The contract goes into effect August 1, 2016 for a five-year term.

Allegiant Announces Purchase of Twelve New Airbus A320ceo Aircraft Allegiant announced an agreement to purchase twelve new, current engine option (ceo) Airbus A320 aircraft. This first-time new aircraft purchase by the company is another step towards Allegiant’s planned transition to an all Airbus fleet by 2019. “The fact that these planes are new is notable, but should not be seen as a change in our fundamental strategy,” said Maury Gallagher, Allegiant chairman and chief executive officer. “We have always looked at building our fleet opportunistically, and this agreement is no exception. With Airbus preparing to transition production of its current engine option models to new engine option models, we were able to negotiate an order for twelve end-of-line slots.” Allegiant has selected the CFM engine type for the aircraft in this agreement. The aircraft are expected to enter service between 2017 and 2018. This transaction brings Allegiant a total of 77 Airbus aircraft either in service or committed for future delivery.

“This purchase agreement is an important step in transitioning to a single fleet type,” said Jude Bricker, Allegiant chief operating officer. “Streamlining our fleet will increase efficiencies across our entire operation and bring economic advantages in fuel savings and a higher number of seats -- allowing us to continue offering the industry’s most affordable fares, while increasing reliability.” By the end of 2016, the company’s in service Airbus fleet will number 33, consisting of 16 A320s and 17 A319s. At the end of this year, Allegiant will have a total of 85 aircraft in revenue service. “We love it when we hear the Allegiant team say that ‘Airbus is our future,’ because that demonstrates they are hitting their bottom-line goals while also satisfying their passengers, and they know it’s because of the Airbus A320 family,” said John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer -- customers. “When an airline grows its A320 fleet, it’s making a sound investment in its financial future.”

Aviator Bulletins SkyWest Airlines Announces Partnership with ATP Flight School ATP students may receive up to $11,000 Tuition Reimbursement; ATP Latest of 56 Flight Schools to Join SkyWest’s Pilot Pathway Program SkyWest Airlines is pleased to announce a new Tuition Reimbursement Program agreement with ATP Flight School, helping aspiring pilots solidify their career pathway to SkyWest Airlines. Together, SkyWest and ATP are providing a pathway for students to take control of their aviation careers. As part of this agreement, SkyWest will participate in ATP Flight School’s Tuition Reimbursement Program, and ATP will be one of 56 exceptional flight schools to participate in SkyWest’s Pilot Pathway Program. With the ATP Tuition Reimbursement Program, SkyWest will reimburse pilots up to $11,000 for flight training costs at ATP. In addition to the financial tuition reimbursement, the agreement also creates a direct path for pilots to become SkyWest cadets, securing mentorships, access to company facilities, simulators and more. “We’re excited to partner with ATP to provide tuition assistance and prepare a solid pathway to SkyWest

Envoy to expand American Eagle Embraer service at DFW As we reach the midpoint of 2016 and look ahead to the coming year, we’re pleased to share more good news about Envoy’s fleet. American Airlines has advised us that additional Embraer 145 (E145) aircraft will return to Envoy in 2017, in addition to the two that returned last month and we are currently flying in support of the summer schedule. “These E145s will mean that all Embraer aircraft operated as American Eagle service at Dallas/Fort Worth will be flown and maintained by Envoy employees,” said Dee Temples, Senior Vice President Air Operations. “These aircraft – in addition to the new Embraer 175s

(E175s) we continue to receive each month – represent opportunities for all of the employees who support them at American’s largest hub.” “For pilots, Envoy’s significant presence at DFW and ORD is perfect,” added Ric Wilson, Vice President Flight Operations. “When it comes to ease of commuting or quality of life within the community, Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago are hard to beat.” The schedule for these aircraft is currently being finalized, but we expect to start receiving them in February 2017, and continuing through June.

Trans States Airlines Rolls Out Seniority Reservation Program This unique program allows new hire pilots to come to training for two days, and then leave for up to 90 days to complete other commitments. When pilots return to training, they already have up to 90 days of seniority and may NEVER sit reserve as a First Officer. Seniority determines everything for pilots, including schedule, base assignment, and upgrade time. Pilots are more likely to get their preferred base assignment right out of training with three months of seniority backing their bid. Plus, pilots in the seniority reservation program reach year two pay in 9 months instead of 12 months. Something else to consider is upgrade time. Taking on 52 new aircraft in 2015-16 means that Trans

Aviator Bulletins Piedmont Airlines Announces Additional Expansion of Jet Fleet

Piedmont Airlines is further expanding its fleet of Embraer 145 regional jets with accelerated deliveries of aircraft from American Airlines starting in early 2017. “This is a vote of confidence from American and a goal we worked very hard to achieve,” said President and CEO Lyle Hogg. “American had previously committed 20 jets to Piedmont and we are pleased that our parent company will now continue to increase that number. The expanding fleet of jets puts Piedmont on an exciting path to the future, and that will lead to even more opportunities.” Piedmont began operating the E145 regional jet in February, and has taken delivery of seven jets so far. All Piedmont jets will operate out of the American Airlines Philadelphia hub. “We will greatly expand our operations in Philadelphia, including placing more crew members there,” said Hogg. Piedmont offers a $15,000 signing bonus to new hire pilots and plans to hire more than 200 pilots in 2016. “This is a very good opportunity for pilots who want

to work for an airline that promises growth, stability and a guaranteed job at American Airlines one day.” As a result of the accelerated jet expansion, Piedmont will begin to transition away from its traditional aircraft, the de Havilland DHC-8 turboprop. Piedmont expects to start retiring turboprop aircraft at a rate of about one aircraft per month. “The Dash has served us well for years,” said Hogg, “but we know that passengers prefer the regional jets and we want to provide the best service we can for American and for our customers.” The expansion of Piedmont’s jet fleet comes amid growth in other areas of the company. Piedmont is adding 300 customer service jobs in Charlotte, N.C. this year and recently opened a new maintenance base in Richmond, Virginia. “At a time when so many regional airlines are shrinking, we are adding jobs across the country, adding aircraft, adding new routes,” said Hogg. “It’s exciting to be part of a very robust American Airlines Group and we’re thrilled to be part of that success.”

Q&A with Tracy Gallo V.P. of Flight Operations

For a better idea of what it takes, we talked to Tracy Gallo, vice president of Flight Operations at SkyWest Airlines about what makes a successful candidate at SkyWest: How do you select applicants to be brought in for an interview? SkyWest pilots are top tier and experience some of the best training in the industry. We look for professionals with great attitudes who are looking to work on an exceptional team. Once someone fills out the application for the first officer position at skywest.com, we evaluate their qualifications, ensure they have

what they need or help them secure any additional things like their CTP or work with them until they complete their 1,500 hours or FAA-approved equivalent; and if they’re ready we set up an interview.

Can you talk me through a typical interview? The interview is an important process for the pilot and for SkyWest. We really want to get to know the applicants and test their knowledge about safely operating an aircraft in a 121 environment. Candidates can expect a few hours for an interview. Right before the interview starts, we give candidates a brief introduction and let them know what to expect during their interview. We spend some time going through a CRM scenario, go over their Jeppesen knowledge, aircraft systems, and review FARs and some general HR questions. This covers 121 rules, approach procedures, en route chart knowledge and symbology, jet aerodynamics and high-speed flight characteristics and similar topics. After the interview we debrief and let the candidate know how they did.

When do you tell applicants if they are hired? We’re very quick. If the candidate is exceptional, they can receive an offer on the spot. At most, you’ll hear back within a few days of the interview. continued


Can you explain the ATP-CTP class that your company offers? If a pilot applies and passes the interview but still needs to complete their ATP written exam, we will cover the cost of the ATP-CTP course, plus travel and lodging, to ensure they meet that requirement.

Hydrate Your Way to Better Health

T

he human body can survive without food for weeks but cannot go for more than a few days without water. Water makes up nearly 60% of a person’s total body weight and is the facilitator of digestion. It is also responsible for cellular health, regulating body temperature, and blood circulation.

While hydration is important daily, it is especially significant during summertime. Fluid loss occurs more quickly in the warmer months. Dehydration can be detrimental to bodily functions and in extreme cases, fatal. A safe general recommendation for fluid intake is 3 liters daily. Ensure you remain hydrated with these tips: 1. Prevent thirst before it begins. The body triggers thirst at 1-2% fluid loss. This marginally low percentage of fluid loss compromises some bodily functions.

2. Consume a glass of water before each first meal. Studies show people who consume water

Water does not have to be boring. Consider adding lemon, lime, cucumber or orange to your water. Not only does citrus fruit add great taste, it is also a natural fat burner. Peppermint leaves add a nice minty flavor to cold water and as a bonus, it freshens breath. Next month we will learn about hidden calories in your beverages.

Diversify your consumption. Herbal teas, coffee, milk, and unsweetened juices all contain water. Beware of caffeine. It is a diuretic and will deplete some of your water intake. Sports drinks, although rich in electrolytes, are also exceptionally high in sugar. Sports drinks are not necessary to replenish bodily fluids unless you are exercising for an excessive length of time. Flavored waters should also be scrutinized. Read labels carefully. You want to avoid brands that contain artificial flavors, colors, sugars, and salts.

Hiring Perceptions, Past and Present:

Sun Country only hires pilots who live in Minnesota. This is no longer the case. We are actively seeking pilot candidates from both inside and outside of Minnesota.

Sun Country only hires pilots who have an internal referral. While we welcome internal referrals, we also consider candidates that we meet at Job Fairs, and process resumes received via the Careers link on the company public website (see below):

Sun Country has developed over the years the ability to expand their fleet during the winter months. While most airlines see a downturn in the winter months, Sun Country has developed a relationship with Transavia Airlines (based in the Netherlands). Transavia aircraft are flown to Minnesota each winter. This allows extra seats for increased Sun Country winter seasonal flying. These aircraft are returned to Transavia after the winter months. The Sun Country Charter Department has grown to be very nimble and effective at generating new business and destinations. Sun Country has contracts with various sports teams, and casinos to fly nationwide and frequently to international destinations. Charter flying allows crews to experience a wide range of diverse destinations. Pilots joining Sun Country look forward to a variety of flying.

Sun Country Vacations® has become a popular method for customers to book their entire vacation package. Sun Country’s relationship with resorts and hotels provides a high quality vacation experience for its customers at a lower overall cost, especially for families.

Sun Country operates out of Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport: Terminal 2. People “in the know” already fly out of Terminal 2, but now more and more are realizing the benefits of the relaxed terminal experience that Terminal 2 provides.

Sun Country pilots fly mostly out and backs, and are home most evenings. While these types of trips/ pairings exist, Sun Country pilots also fly multi-day trips, including ETOPs legs to several international charter destinations.

Sun Country does not follow-through with their training agreement. Sun Country has an eighteen month, $20,000.00 training agreement. Though there is very little attrition on the pilot list, those who do choose to leave prior to the eighteen month service requirement pay the prorated amount owed.

Sun Country only has one pilot base. This is true, and all trips start and finish in Minneapolis-St. Paul. We do have flight attendants based in Gulfport, Mississippi and Laughlin, Nevada.

Competitive candidates have more than 3,000 hours total time, and have a previous airline or military background, however other flying backgrounds are considered. The interview takes place in the Flight Operations Building C, (on Cargo Road MSP), and consists of a leadership assessment, followed by an interview panel that typically lasts about one hour. Ground school takes place in Building C. Sun Country has a dedicated 737 Simulator based in Minneapolis. Ground school, Simulator, and IOE typically takes up to three months to complete. To set pilots up for success Sun Country provides extended IOE to allow time to become familiar with a wide variety of flying. Pilots can expect to be on reserve for a short period of time. There is a two hour call out for three reserve periods each day. Upgrade time is approximately three years. Pilots are using iPads (EFBs) that are provided in each aircraft for their Jeppesen Charts and to access Company Manuals. Sun Country has also developed a relationship with Jeppesen that allows the Company to publish company information charts that appear within the Jeppesen FD-Pro App. Sun Country Airlines is looking forward to meeting with you; and providing a pathway to fly for the Hometown Airline.

Health Insurance:

The Most Overlooked Compensation

H

ealth insurance isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind when job seeking, even though it is one of the largest single components of total compensation that an employee can receive. In the era of spiraling healthcare costs, the amount of coverage made available by the company and the amount of cost absorbed by the company can have a tremendous effect on the overall compensation and quality of life of a pilot. It is also one of the things that most people don’t regret going cheap on until they need to use it for an unforeseen or major expense related to healthcare, which can easily soar into the multiple thousands of dollars of out of pocket expenses. In most modern cases, almost all airlines provide at least some insurance options for pilots that are paid, at least in part, by the company. Coverages and prices may vary depending on the airline or type of coverage selected. Some airlines may have multiple plans a pilot can choose from, and some may not. Another major factor related to health insurance as it relates to pilot compensation, is the amount of coverage that the airline subsidizes. As an example, assume that Airline A covers all of the insurance cost except 20%, which is passed onto the pilot; while Airline B covers the total cost of the insurance except 40% which is passed onto the pilot. Assuming identical coverage, this difference can cost the pilot an extra several hundred dollars per month, which could add up to thousands of dollars in annual costs. While not something immediately considered by most people, this can have an effect of several thousand dollars or more for each pilot per year, without changing anything else. The other potential outcome for this might be that a pilot for Company A can get more coverage for the same price as the pilot for Company B. Green Laser Strikes at Newark It was a cold crisp night last December; we had just been handed over to the Newark tower controller from New York approach control. It had been a long four-day trip and we just wanted to get on the ground so we could go home. I was working the radios and a few seconds after I had flipped the switch the radio crackled. “Tower, HeavyJet 226 we were just lasered several times in a row.” “HeavyJet 226, roger, can you identify the location?” “It happened approximately niner miles south of Newark, I’m not too familiar with the area, but I see some docks and several buildings.” “Is any one hurt?” the tower controller queried. “Negative, there was only a few short quick bursts and we did not get a direct hit.” “Copy, attention all aircraft on frequency be advised reported laser strike niner miles south of Newark on the ILS to 4 right. Repeat, laser strikes reported niner miles south of Newark on the ILS to 4 right.” I glanced over at my First Officer and advised him to be

cautious of where he is looking when we get there. We were probably number four in line for this exact same approach. Each aircraft in front of us reported the same thing. “Green laser strike, same thing short burst, it looks like Perth Amboy area.” Another pilot exclaimed. As we approached the same area, we cautiously looked for the laser and prepared to cover our eyes. At first I thought maybe the person stopped, but then there it was. A green laser pierced the night sky from the ground up. It quickly moved towards our aircraft. Noticing the movement I looked down and closed my eyes, but it was too late. The laser had come within feet of a direct hit. I hadn’t lost any of my vision, I could still see, but my eyes hurt and my vision was ‘glared’. “Are you okay?” I asked my First Officer. “Yes.” He replied. “I think I got hit. I’m seeing a glare.” I clicked the push to talk button. “Tower, LinkJet 4316, we just got hit also.” “Roger, was anyone injured?” “It was close to a direct hit. I am seeing a little glare, but nothing serious.”

Let us know if you need any assistance.” “Negative on the assistance for now, cleared to land 4 right, LinkJet 4316.” We touched down on runway 4 right without further incident. While we were taxing in to our gate the ground controller asked us to copy down a phone number for us to call once we got to the gate. At the gate, I dialed the number on my cell phone, and the controller answered, “Newark Tower.” “Hi this is the Captain of LinkJet 4316, we were asked to call you, we were just lasered on final approach.” “Is anyone hurt?” “Negative, I was seeing a little glare, but it’s gone now.” “Okay can you tell us more about it?” “Sure, there were several short bursts and one long burst. It was a green laser, after looking at the map on my phone I can say it was definitely in Perth Amboy, just off the Raritan Bay. “ “Great, thanks we will file a report and let the local authorities know about it.” I could hear quiet beeps on the phone, indicating that

this was a recorded line. “Okay thank you, do you need me to do anything else?” “Nope that’s it, thanks for your help.” I hung up my phone, grabbed my belongings and headed to my car. I later filed a report with my company and even followed up with my doctor to make sure that there was no damage to my eyes. My doctor cleared me even though I had still seen glares for a few weeks afterwards. He said it would go away eventually, just be glad you didn’t get a direct hit. It was months later and I couldn’t stop thinking about this event. I started thinking about what could I do to help educate and stop these laser strikes. From what I have read most of the people behind the lasers have no idea of the potential damage they can cause, they just “want to see how far it will go.” It was then that I decided to form a non-profit volunteer group to educate the public and come up with new ways that we can help reduce or prevent laser strikes on aircraft. I enlisted a few close friends and we formed a board. Our first order of business was our name. On March 29th of 2016, we started a weeklong board meeting, via text message group; first order of business was the name, we voted on Pilots Against Laser Strikes or PALs. We became an LLC on May 31st and hope to become a true non-profit within our first year. To volunteer or donate please visit our website at www.pilotsagainstlaserstrikes.org.
