put the untrained aloft, it was still just a concept. I had to shake my head when some of the talking heads on the news questioned the point of the flights of Virgin Galactic with Richard Branson aboard and the flight of Blue Origen’s New Shepherd with Jeff Bezos. They scoffed at the future of an industry for only the super wealthy. The era of manned flight within the atmosphere began with baby steps, too. The early Boeing Clippers that Pan Am flew from New York to Southampton, England cost $12,000 in today’s dollars! Regardless of the nay-sayers, one day, space travel will be a “thing.” I like to think I’ll remember this “one small step” as we watch this new phase unfold. I’d like to tell my grandchildren (not too soon, please) about where I was when I watched these first adventurers reach the edge of space.

team get a shot at revenge the weekend of Oct. 10 The addition of these new point-to-point routes is just the latest way the airline is creatively rebuilding its network. United started to prepare for the return of air travel more than a year ago, matching its flying schedule to demand by maintaining close coordination between its network planning teams and the airline’s operating groups. In September, United will fly 88% of its 2019 domestic schedule. To purchase one of these flights, visit https://www.united.com/en-us/game-day. As customers book trips this fall, they will notice new upgrades to United’s service as part of its customer experience transformation. Updates include the option to pre-order snacks and beverages online and through United’s app. And customers can book trips with confidence knowing that if their plans change, they have the flexibility to adjust their travel. United was the first global U.S. airline to eliminate change fees on most tickets and to allow all customers to fly standby for free on the same day of travel to the same destination.

“Boeing continues to be a terrific partner for Alaska. We began flying our first 737-9s this past spring, and we’re extremely pleased with the operational, financial and environmental performance of the aircraft,” said Pieper. “The planes are exceeding our expectations – from how quiet the engines run to the greater range they provide – and our guests love them.” Alaska’s 737-9s are configured to carry 178 guests with 16 First Class seats and 24 Premium Class seats, which provide the most premium legroom of any other U.S. airline. As more travelers take to the skies, Alaska remains committed to Next-Level Care for our guests and employees by implementing more than 100 ways to maintain the highest standard of safety – from clean planes to clean air in the cabin (with hospital-grade air filtration systems). Do pilots have the impression that nothing more can happen to turn the industry upside down again? A look at the rest of the world shows a very different situation than that found in the U.S. Things are very slowly starting to show signs of improvement outside of the U.S., so the idea of leaving any kind of flying position for the most junior spot should be unthinkable. I work the nutrition plan and adjust my caloric intake as necessary to keep my energy levels up and the fat off. This has allowed me to drop nearly 30 pounds over the last year and has helped me to keep it off. Here’s what I learned: 1. You must determine YOUR own caloric needs. There are many online nutrition calculators available that will help you determine that number. Use them. 2. Don’t be overly restrictive. That leads to binging. Find an approach that allows you to still eat things you like in moderation. Start reading food labels. You’ll be amazed at serving sizes!! 3. Know what your triggers are and work to limit them. Using an HSA as a Retirement Account W r i t t e n b y G a r y K r a s n o v, A I F ®, C L T C ®
T
here are few vehicles as tax efficient as a Health Savings Account (HSA). I like to think of HSAs as a ROTH on steroids. As you know, in most cases1 with a ROTH account, you can invest after-tax dollars that grow tax free and are withdrawn tax free in retirement.
September 2021 | 39
With an HSA, you can deposit pre-tax dollars that grow tax free and when withdrawn for qualified medical expenses (QME) are distributed tax free. An HSA may be the most powerful wealth-accumulation tool available to you. First, let’s review the current rules for HSA accounts.
THE RULES FOR HSA ACCOUNTS To contribute to an HSA, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) and cannot be covered by any other traditional health plan. For example, if you are covered by Tri-Care, you cannot contribute to an HSA even if you are also enrolled in an HDHP at work. Contribution limits for HSA accounts are indexed for inflation and for 2021, the limit is $3,600 for an individual (compared to $3,500 in 2019) and $7,200 for an employee with family coverage (compared to $7,000 in 2019). If you are 55 or older, you are also allowed an additional $1,000 as a catch-up contribution. For a medical plan to be considered an HDHP, it must meet the following criteria; the annual deductible for 2021 must be at least $1,400 for an individual and no less than $2,800 for a covered family. The total annual deductible and other out-of-pocket expenses cannot exceed $6,900 for an individual and $13,800 for a covered family. (This limit doesn’t apply to out-of-network services.) These amounts are also indexed for inflation. Your contribution to an HSA is not subject to federal income tax, state tax (except in Alabama, California and New Jersey), or FICA taxes, if made through your employer’s HSA plan. Distributions from an HSA are tax free if used for QMEs of your own, your spouse or anyone who is a dependent on your federal tax return. QMEs can be defined as any out-of-pocket health care cost that would be allowed as an itemized deduction on your tax return, unless you actually received a deduction for that expense. (Otherwise, you would be “double-dipping.”) QMEs can be any medical, dental or vision expense. The premium for your HDHP is not a QME because you are already using pre-tax dollars. Reimbursement from an HSA for a QME does not need to be taken in the year the expense was incurred (so save ALL QME receipts), but the QME must have occurred in a year you were covered by an HDHP and you did not receive a tax deduction for the medical expense. If you have an HDHP, you may not contribute to a Flexible Savings Account (FSA). The good news is that unlike an FSA, an HSA does not have a use-it-or-lose-it provision, and it is portable. The money you contribute is yours until you use it and becomes part of your estate when you pass. You also do not need to submit proof of a QME to withdraw money from an HSA, just save the receipts for the QME in case you are ever audited by the IRS. Another difference between an HSA and an FSA is that with an HSA you can change your contribution rate throughout the year. If you make a withdrawal from your HSA prior to reaching age 65 for a non-QME, the withdrawal is subject to both income tax and a 20% tax penalty. After age 65, the same non-QME withdrawal is subject to income tax only. Once you go on Medicare Part A, you may no longer contribute to an HSA but, of course, can continue to make withdrawals from your HSA. Most recently, Fidelity estimates that a couple retiring in 2019 at age 65 will incur $285,000 in medical expenses in their lifetime², not including any costs for long-term care.

“WHAT SHOULD I CONTRIBUTE TO FIRST?” Let’s take a quick look at the tax treatment of these different accounts.

ROTH NO

IRA* YES

HSA YES
NO
*For the purposes of this discussion, we will assume you are below the income limits that would otherwise exclude you from making these contributions. Now let’s look at what this could mean to you in spendable dollars in the future. To keep things simple, I will use the following assumptions: 25% effective tax rate, 5% annualized growth, $1,000 yearly contribution, 10 years from first contribution to first withdrawal. We will also assume there is no company match to your 401(k).
Total Contribution
Account Value at First Withdrawal
After-Tax Spendable $
401(k) $10,000

$8,584
ROTH $7,500

IRA $10,000
$13,206
$8,584
HSA $10,000
$13,206
$13,206
As you can see, an HSA can yield over 30% more in spendable dollars than any other savings vehicles. 401(k), ROTH, IRA, HSA … What if I can’t fund them all? First, I am assuming you do not have a lot of high-interest credit card debt. If you do, that is priority number one. Build a budget, stick to it and get those credit cards paid off. If that means no Starbucks or cable, make the sacrifice; in the long run, you will be much happier. If you currently are not in a position to contribute the maximum allowable to your 401(k) and an HSA, I would recommend that you contribute enough to your 401(k) to receive the full company match and then contribute as much as you can to an HSA. Please remember that the intent is not to use the money in the HSA to pay current out-of-pocket expenses but to leave the money in your HSA invested for medical expenses incurred in retirement. As your income rises and you have excess cash flow, contribute the maximum allowable amount to your HSA, then increase your contributions to your 401(k) with the goal of maxing out your contribution ($19,000 in 2019).
SAVINGS PRIORITIES To review, here is the priority for retirement savings: 1. 401(k) contributions sufficient to capture all your company match 2. HSA 3. 529 plan contributions (if needed) 4. Unmatched contribution to retirement savings plan (401(k), IRA) Why do we save during our working years? This seems like a simple question. To support ourselves in retirement, of course. Part of that support will require us to pay the many medical expenses we incur during our golden years. How

better to do this than saving pre-tax dollars, investing them, watching them grow tax-free and withdrawing them tax-free to pay our medical expenses? An HSA is the only current vehicle that allows you to do this.

start of a cumulus cloud. If there is enough lifting force, moisture and instability, this cloud can develop into a thunderstorm. Mammatus clouds are most commonly found with extreme thunderstorms. Mammatus clouds look like pouches hanging from a cloud. Typically they are found on the underside of the anvil of a thunderstorm or extend from the base of a cumulonimbus cloud. Additionally, they can also be found under altostratus and cirrus clouds and volcanic ash clouds. Typically, the moisture inside these clouds is composed of ice crystals. Mamma is a Latin word, which means ‘udder’ or ‘breast’, which is attributed to the appearance of the cloud¬ – much like a cow’s udder. These clouds can stretch for hundreds of miles in any direction and are said to last between ten to sixty minutes. For the longest time, I believed that these clouds were associated with tornadoes, but this is not always the case.

he journey of Part 121 training can be a challenging one culminating in the joy for having fulfilled a long-standing dream. Fortunately, over the years, air carriers have improved training significantly. Among these improvements, Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) stands out as the most robust platform to date. While maintaining the same objectives and performance standards, AQP is capable of training candidates to proficiency, while focusing on real-world scenarios. September 2021 | 45

Handling Technological Advances in the Flight Deck Learning from electronic flight bag implementation W r i t t e n b y: J u s t i n A b r a m s

echnology has a tremendous impact on every facet of our industry. Advances made in the last few years have allowed companies to operate more efficiently, with lower costs and lower environmental impacts. With the goal of increasing flight safety, technological advances continue to find their way into the flight deck as well. As our access to new technology grows, our day-to-day responsibilities and tasks are altered. Changes within our flight deck environment will continue to take place, and I believe we can take many lessons from the recent industry-wide electronic flight bag implementation which will better facilitate similar advances in the future. As one would expect, the industry was so eager to adapt electronic flight bags because they provided many benefits to both pilots and operators. However, an undertaking that would fundamentally change the way aeronautical charts, company documents and aircraft data is accessed was incredibly complex. Like most things in aviation, changes often bring threats and additional challenges that must be given proper attention. September 2021 | 49

help us all in the future as more advances come our way.
Though I do not believe anyone currently flying with an electronic flight bag reminisces about the days of thirtypound flight kits and lengthy paper chart revisions, we must remember that the process of implementing electronic flight bags into flight operations was not without its hiccups. While a bit hard to imagine given their prevalence in everyday life today, these devices were not terribly widespread when they were first approved by operators to replace paper charts and manuals. Many pilots were learning how to operate and use the device for the first time, having had no previous experience with like devices in their personal life. Combine that with their critical nature with respect to flight safety and it became a daunting task for many. Any issues with its operation could have had severe consequences, resulting in the need for new procedures that addressed situations such as device failures and operating system/application download issues. That accounts for the long implementation process, as it needed to be proved that pilots had received sufficient training and would be capable of safely handling failures that may arise.

Remembering an Extraordinary, Everyday Hero W r i t t e n B y: G a r r e t t A n d e r s o n
T
wenty years ago, on a warm sunny afternoon, just weeks before Sept. 11, 2001, Jason Dahl, a pilot for United Airlines, called his friend and neighbor, Kevin Larson. Larson, previously a financial executive for Xerox, fondly recalled the short conversation. “What are you doing this afternoon?” asked Dahl. “I got an idea. I’m going to plant daffodils. I don’t want (wife) Sandy to know. I have got to get these in the ground before she gets home. So, can you come over and help me?” September 2021 | 51
“So, I helped him,” said Larson. They planted a couple hundred daffodil bulbs along the side of the Dahl home. “He just wanted it to be a surprise for her.” Weeks later, Dahl was the captain of the ill-fated United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed into a field outside Shanksville, Pa. All that happened that day tore a hole in both his hometown and the flying community. Tom Bush, the current president of the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund (www.dahlfund.org), commented about the months after 9/11, “Sandy Dahl gathered up a group of close friends and said, ‘We need to start something for Jason to remember him and the way he was.’” Bush had known Dahl as a neighbor and from working with him at the Maj. According to Bush, since its inception, the fund has been largely dependent upon charitable donors and the support of Jeppesen, United Airlines, and several frequent flyer organizations. However, in the last couple of years, overwhelming support and growth have allowed the fund to become almost completely self-sufficient. Jeff Cramer, a Naval Academy graduate, Air Force pilot, United colleague and close friend of Dahl, said that this effort represents the best of Dahl. The Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund has impacted scores of lives. To date, 141 scholarships have been awarded. Blake Moore, a 2016 recipient and recent graduate of Metro State College of Denver, who is also a new 757 pilot for United Airlines, brought his own impressions about Dahl’s legacy. He noted that throughout United’s new hire program an emphasis on the word legacy was inter-woven into the messages. Heartland Hero essay assembly

She wants to convey to the students that, “Heroism is a choice and it’s like a muscle. If we don’t exercise the elements that make heroism, how do we connect with others, and how do we empathize with others? Setting aside personal wants, desires, and needs for others requires confronting our fears and doing the right thing even when it’s scary and when we might have something to lose. It makes the heroism muscles strong so that when our moment comes, we’re ready.”
