Envoy Now Has Top-Tier Pay And Is Coming Back To The Big Apple Envoy announced that it will nearly double the starting rate of pay for new hires, to about $38 per hour – effectively starting new hire pilots on Step 3 of the Envoy pilot pay scale. First Officers can earn $58,000 or more in their first year of starting their career at Envoy, including a sign on bonus of $20,000 for pilots hired into Envoy’s legacy fleet (EMB-145 & CRJ-700) or $15,000 for pilots hired into the Embraer EMB-175 aircraft. The pay rates for existing First Officers will also increase during their first three years with the airline. Envoy introduced a $20,000 First Officer Retention bonus earlier this year for pilots already on payroll. This new compensation package expands that program to include any First Officers currently flying for Envoy who did not already qualify for the bonus – as well as all new hires. Under the expanded program, pilots will receive $2,500 quarterly, following completion of one year of service. As early as the first quarter of 2017, Envoy will once again have pilots based at New York’s LaGuardia Airport

(LGA). We will operate the Embraer 145/140 from LGA to destinations in the U.S. and Canada. This development is great news for many of our pilots who live in the Northeast and for future pilot new hires, who will be able to work closer to their homes and families. American Airlines is also projecting that it will need 330 pilots from Envoy next year, with a requirement of 90 pilots within the first 90 days. This also is great news for our pilot group as many Captains will be able to fulfill their ambitions to move to American Airlines and for many of our First Officers the opportunity to upgrade to Captain. October will see a vacancy bid that will open LGA, as well as fill 107 new Captain vacancies throughout the system as needed for American Airlines latest flowthrough projections. “This exciting development is just the latest in a string of great news for Envoy,” said Dee Temples, Senior Vice President Air Operations. “And yet another tangible result of our hard work and dedication to operational excellence.

The Truth about Supplements
In today’s fast-paced life, it is highly unlikely the vast majority of us adhere to a diverse, well-balanced diet to meet nutritional needs. If you are able to meet your daily caloric needs by consuming a nutrient-rich, highly diversified diet, you may not need supplements. Supplements should be used when significant deficiencies exist in your diet. This does not mean supplementation is required daily as they are meant to support, not replace good eating. You may only need to use supplements on those days you are unable to meet your minimum intake requirements. In order to determine when and what supplements are necessary, here are few tips and guidelines. 1. Consult with your physician before starting a supplement regimen. Check with your physician before introducing supplements into your routine.
Many consumers believe products are safe because they are on the market. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not test the effectiveness, safety or purity of nutritional supplements and US guidelines are far less strict than other countries like Canada and Europe. As consumers, it is important to know what you are feeding your body.
Exercise of the Month Bent Over Fly Primary Muscle Targeted: Back Secondary Muscles: Abdominals, Rear Delts, Shoulders 1. Standing with your feet hip-width apart, bend at the waist holding dumbbells (or plates) with your arms straight, palms facing in. 2. Maintaining a flat back, raise the dumbbells outward to shoulder height. • Bend your elbows slightly as you lift if necessary.
2. Determine what physiological system you are targeting. Before taking any supplement, you should know exactly what system is impacted by the supplement and whether or not that system requires supplementation. If you cannot make this determination, do not supplement. 3. Be selective in your supplement choices. All supplements are not created equal. Choose supplements with natural ingredients and with a few as possible (e.g. dl-alpha tocopheryl is a synthetic Vitamin E with fewer benefits than natural Vitamin E). 4. Choose reputable manufacturers. Choose companies that provide certifications, of analysis and studies to support product claims. Calling in Fatigued:
What’s it worth to pilots?
P
ilots flying fatigued has become a major focal point for the FAA in recent years. As a result, new regulations have arised to help combat fatigue flying. Airlines have absorbed the responsibility of their tired pilots, resulting in company-specific programs to supplement the FAA’s new FAR 117 rest rules. While these advancements have made positive changes throughout the industry, the specifics of fatigue calls still vary in nature between individual airlines. Differences in committee structure, reporting procedures, and compensation are contributing factors in whether or not a pilot decides to call in fatigued. Generally, if an airline has a fatigue system in place, it will consist of a review committee. This committee traditionally has representatives from both the company and the union, with the size of the entire committee varying. Most airlines will utilize two to three representatives. Upon calling in fatigued, pilots will be granted a hotel and/ or released from duty and their rest will comply with FAR 117 rest rules. If a pilot called in fatigued at his/her home base, the company most likely will not furnish a hotel. If the pilot calls fatigued during the middle of a trip, and he/she still has working days left, he/she may be required to continue flying after receiving proper rest. Usually pilots are allowed to deadhead, or travel as a passenger, back to their base or home of record. A pilot who calls in fatigued will have to document the fatigue call in some manner. Most airlines use an electronic method, but some require the documentation to occur by phone. The due date of the fatigue report varies, with most airlines allowing 24 hours after trip termination for a pilot to submit the report. Variances exist, such as 48 hours after trip termination or 72 hours after the fatigue call was made. Although not frequent, some airlines will also require a sleep history of the pilot, with this report usually due two weeks or so after the fatigue call. Compensation for reporting fatigue is vital and, unfortunately, ultimately a leading factor in how a pilot assesses if he/she is fatigued. This varies significantly between airlines, with most airlines providing some sort of compensation wen a pilot calls out fatigued. Most airlines will pay protect a pilot for any flying on his/her schedule before the fatigue call was made. Certain airlines may furthermore provide pay protection for flying originally scheduled for the pilot, but if the pilot is found to be at fault for their fatigue the pay protection may be revoked. Furthermore, if compensation is received, it may be paid out from different sources. For most airlines, compensation provided by fatigue calls will be paid out of a sick bank or paid-
Image provided by Unsplash.com time off (PTO) bank. There are a couple of regional airlines out there that provide compensation without reducing a pilot’s sick bank or PTO bank. Lastly, the fatigue management system put in place by each airline is generally directed by the company’s management team. Companies have provided different forms of information for the fatigue system in place. Some airlines publish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), while others have dedicated pages on the company website. Others have been reported to make little information readily available for pilots. Governance of the fatigue management system is ultimately at the discretion of the management team and union officials to oversee the system. While pilots are protected from flying fatigued under FAR 117, the individual company’s procedures may determine whether a pilot actually feels fatigued enough to make the call. Marc Cervantes is an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Daytona Beach graduate, having received his MBA in Aviation Finance as well as his BS in Aeronautical Science. Marc is currently a First Officer for a regional airline, having logged over 3,000 hours of flight time. In his spare time he volunteers on three separate MEC committees and has started up an organization dedicated to helping the younger generation of pilots network with current pilots. Their goal is to help pilots looking to join the regional airlines. For more information about Professional Pilots of Tomorrow visit ThePPOT.org.

Although the PC-12 is certified for single pilot operation, Boutique Air utilizes a two crew operation for safety. All training for the PC-12 is done in house, with new hire training being accomplished in Denver. PIC’s are trained to a single pilot standard, both to increase safety, and to allow for any circumstances in which a single pilot crew may be advantageous. The ground training lasts 8 days, with 1 day off towards the end of the eight days to allow for some study time before the required testing. Flight training is done in the aircraft, and consists of 5 training sessions, and then a Checkride. Training for the King Air is accomplished through Flight Safety International and lasts approximately 12 days at the Wichita, KS location. At Boutique Air, we believe that ‘Quality of Life matters!’ Boutique air offers excellent health insurance, and the employee premium is 100% covered by the company. We offer 12 days PTO in the first year Compensation for Captains is $62.50 a block hour with an 80 hour minimum guarantee a month ($60,000 a year minimum), and First Officers are compensated $25.00 a block hour with an 80 hour minimum guarantee ($24,000 a year minimum). Captains are given raises yearly on a bonus pay scale system that is paid out every 6 month interval. Boutique offers various upgrade incentives for those First Officers who have been with the company for at least 9 months.

Boutique Air’s ribbon cutting ceremony marking the start or service to Carlsbad, NM. Boutique operates loosely on a 4/3 schedule. Though the schedule may not hold specifically to 4 days on, 3 off, this is to accommodate the maximum number of pilot requests. All base days off generally average out to what would be a 4/3 for the month. The schedule is built out for each pilot domicile month to month by our scheduling department. Pilots submit
requests to the scheduling department, and the schedule is custom built to accommodate as many requests as possible. Because of this, there is extra flexibility in how your days off are assigned, preventing you from having to take PTO unless you exceed the average days off per month.

Bryant: Applicants meeting the requirements listed on our website are called for interviews. A captain candidate must meet all Part 135 minimums if interested in the King Air position. A first officer candidate needs to have either 500 hours total or have six months experience. PC-12 or King Air time is not required, though it is preferred. C: How critical is it to attend a job fair to get an interview? B: We just started doing job fairs. If a candidate attends, it benefits them to have a face-to-face meeting with the recruiters so they can put a face to the resume. We have conducted on site interviews at job fairs for candidates that stand out. C: What is the best way to prepare for an interview with your company? B: Brush up on instrument rules and Part 135 regulations. Interview: C: Can you walk me through a typical day of interviews? B: The majority of interviews are conducted over the phone. There are two rounds of interviews a candidate must go through, with the second being contingent on passing the first. Once both interviews are completed, the pilot is either offered a position with a base assignment or placed into our hiring pool if they are wanting a specific base that may not be open yet. C: What kind of questions can an applicant expect to be asked? B: Questions that will give the interviewer a sense of who the applicant is as well as how he or she might fit into our organization.
C: B:
What are some of the biggest mistakes that applicants make during the interview process? Applicants who ask about being based in a location where we do not have a base, such as Miami, or who ask us what kind of aircraft we fly. It shows the applicant isn’t as interested in the company because he or she has not done any form of research on us prior.
Written test: C: Is there a written or computer test? B: No. C: B:
Is there a personality test? No.
Simulator Evaluation: C: Do you have a simulator ride? B: No. Post Interview: C: Do you tell applicants they are hired in person that day? B: We evaluate multiple applicants prior to offering a position. We offer positions once we have conducted multiple interviews, so we do not typically offer positions the same day. C: B:
How long do applicants have to wait to know if they are hired? Time varies, however they should know something within a couple of weeks.
C: B:
How soon can an applicant expect a class date after being hired? The majority of applicants want to give notice to their current employer. With that in mind, we generally have at least two weeks between an offer and the start of class, in most cases longer.
October 2016 21
Interview with Bryant West continued... General: C: How many pilots does your airline expect to hire this year? B: With the expansion we are having, it is difficult to say. A good estimate would be around fifty. C: B:
C: B:
Does Boutique Air have a pilot referral program? We take referrals from our pilots very seriously. Internal referrals carry a lot of weight when conducting the interview process.
Do you have a hiring bonus? We do not offer a hiring bonus.

Travel is my Religion™
Written by: Pamela Creighton
If No One Goes With You; Go By Yourself!
I
n 2007, when I first got my job as a flight attendant, I decided that I wanted to travel outside of the US, however, I had no one to travel with. No one I knew had a passport or had the money to travel outside the US. I relayed this frustration to one of my pilot friends and he said, “Go by yourself! If you wait for someone to travel with you, you will never travel anywhere.” I thought to myself, “ah hell nah, I am not doing that.” He explained that he traveled alone more than once and that insured me that if I was scared then I should go to London. He explained that people spoke English and the subway system was easy to navigate. Mind you I grew up in Denver and California and the only place I lived outside of there was Houston, Texas. However, I decided to take his advice and I began to plan my trip to London. Preparing to go solo across the pond
For my first trip to London I over prepared. I booked a lot of my tours and transportation cards on-line so that I would have them prior to getting to London. I booked a hostel without really knowing what a hostel was. My routes were all mapped out from the airport and to the hostel I was staying at. Let’s just say the preparation was pretty overwhelming but I figured that it’s better to be over prepared than not prepared at all (a motto I don’t really subscribe to anymore). With all this preparation I felt I was prepared to go across the pond to London. Arriving in London, UK Once I was through customs and went outside the airport to find the train into London and the reality set in that “I’m really in London ALL by myself!” I’m not going to lie I was scared and anxious. All that preparation that I did prior to leaving the USA didn’t prepare me for the anxiousness that I would feel,
but I got on the train to London and took in the scenery and the landscape of a country that I only seen on TV. Soon my anxiousness became more of amazement and soon I began to relax. I got to the hostel way before the check in time and I realized that the flight and the time difference hit me hard and the only thing my body wanted to do was sleep. I only had 4 days in the UK and did not want to miss out on anything. However I realized that when I was booking my hostel and tours I didn’t think about the time change! After I checked in I realized I payed for a night that was a day before and I missed one of my tours! Of course I was living in California at the time and being nervous about making a solo trip I didn’t think about the time change! Nonetheless, I decided to book a hop on hop off bus tour from the hostel and I went to explore London. The realization of being solo in London Since this was my first trip alone outside of the states I wasn’t as social as I am now. I was too afraid to put myself out there and I didn’t want people to know that I was traveling solo because I didn’t want to get ‘snatched up.’ I didn’t go out and drink or really travel alone at night to see some cool places. Put it this way, I was a complete nerd and was at times bored wishing I had someone with me to explore this amazing place. I stuck to my schedule of tours and really didn’t try new things. I know I missed out on a lot of things and meeting new people on this first trip solo. My growth in traveling Since my London trip, I’ve been to 13 countries! Israel, Thailand, Switzerland, and Ireland were all solo trips. London was just a tip of the iceberg for things to come. It wasn’t as adventurous, but it made me realize that I can travel solo and safely. I book fewer tours and I have become more of an explorer. I’ve become social and I’ve made many new friends. I’ve seen and done things that I thought I would never see in life all because I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I discovered that I could overcome challenges when faced with adversity. With each travel adventure I learn a bit more of myself. Pamela Creighton has been a Flight Attendant for a regional airline for the past nine years. She is also the creator of Travel Is My Religion™, a travel blog for solo and budget travelers. Pam also recently became the Founder and CEO of SocialTravelr™, a travel app that connects people at the airport while waiting on their delayed, canceled and connecting flights. Pam enjoys traveling to new and exotic places, to date she has visited 49 out of the 50 states in the USA and over 20 different countries spanning 5 out of the 7 continents across the world.
