angalore, the Capital City of Karnataka is known for its sobriquets like the Garden City, IT Capital, and Silicon Valley of India, among others.

But over the last decade, the city has earned another name which adds to its significant globally - The Startup Capital of India. The term startups has become synonymous with

With the support of the Karnataka government’s efforts and several startupcentric programmes, Bangalore or rather Karnataka has been the centre of attention for large MNCs, VC funds and startup talent over the last couple of years. According to a report published recently by US venture capital and startup database C B Insights, Bangalore ranked first among Indian cities to have highest number of startup investment rounds greater than $100 million since 2014. The city is home to some of the best startup giants Flipkart, Ola Cabs among others. Bangalore’s cosmopolitan culture provides even the most niche start-up with the right target audience. The Defence Ministry has chosen Bangalore as the ideal place to launch the Defence India Startup Challenge 2018. The state government with its proactive policies extends full support for startup nourishment. With the productive use of the conducive environment provided by the government, Bangalore could become the undisputable leader in startup culture.

Bangalore. When it comes to the number of startups and its funding, Bangalore has been taking the centre stage in India ever since the so called startup-culture started prevailing in the country’s industrial sector. The city has represented India in most of the global surveys and rankings related to startups and has won several awards. Recently, Bangalore has added another feather into it golden startup crown. According to a report published recently by US venture capital and startup database C B Insights, Bangalore ranked first among Indian cities to have highest number of startup investment rounds greater than $100 million since 2014. The city marked 21 investment rounds

greater than $100 million since 2014 compared to Delhi NCR (18), which is Bangalore’s main competitor in the sector. The report also states that Bangalore runs ahead of foreign cities like London (19), Boston (13), and Tel Aviv (2), which are often regarded as strong startup hubs around the world. Tech Startups Accolades Bengaluru and Delhi NCR have been battling each other for the past couple of years for being the best startup ecosystem in technology. According to Inc42’s recently released Annual Indian Tech Startup Funding Report 2017,

Bengaluru smoothly claimed the first spot in the Indian tech startup funding charts with a whopping number of 366 deals and $7.5 Bn funding. The spike in amount, however, is largely because of Flipkart’s $4 Bn and Ola’s $1.1 Bn fundraises last years. Also, Bangalore has claimed the second spot in the list of best locations for launching tech compiled by SmallBusinessPrices.co.uk. The research platform has listed some of the best cities to live and work in for young people who want to launch their own business. Average internet speed, average business valuation, and cost of living were among other metrics considered for the ranking, and Bengaluru performed exceptionally well in the business category, with over 7,500 startups and the largest number of investors (6,236). Defence India Startup Challenge After making a mark in sectors like eCommerce, IT fintech and AI, Bangalore’s Startup ecosystem is now taking the defence sector by storm with its innovative outof-the-box ideas. Bangalore has been selected for the launch of Defence India Start Up Challenge, an initiative of Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) under the aegis of Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. The Defence India Start up Challenge, aimed at supporting innovators to create prototypes, commercialise products or solutions based on advanced technologies in the area of national security, will further the startup potential of the city which is already home to several startups in aerospace and defence sector. The Defence India Startup

Challenge has a two-folded vision as it helps to create functional prototypes of products or technologies relevant for national security (prototyping), and to build an ecosystem of fast-moving innovation in India’s Defence Sector. Also, it helps new deep-tech products find markets and early customers (commercialisation) in the context of the Indian Defence Sector. An innovation ecosystem for Defence titled Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) was launched in April 2018 by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at the DefExpo 2018, held in Chennai.

iDEX is aimed at creation of an ecosystem to foster innovation and technology development in Defence and Aerospace by engaging Industries including MSMEs, Startups, and provide them grants/funding and other support to carry out R&D which has good potential for future adoption for Indian defence and aerospace needs. iDEX will function as the executive arm of the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO). The scheme mandates setting up of Defence Innovation Hubs across the country, to provide necessary incubation and infrastructure support

to defence startups and innovators. Bangalore could excel in defence startup sector as the city is already one of the leading defence and aerospace manufacturing hubs in the country. Until a few years ago, the defence sector was an exclusive club of large-cap companies but the ongoing Startup Revolution in last one decade made it possible for a lot of small startups to enter the defence sector in the city. With the presence of several PSUs like HAL, BEL, BEML etc. startups have a great opportunity to be part of the fast-growing defence manufacture. Moreover, the proximity to the proposed defence corridor offers wide scope for startups to play a major role in fulfilling the new requirements in the sector. Proactive policies of Government The above reports reveal that the credits for winning the name ‘Startup Capital of India’ directly goes to several startup-oriented policies and funding programmes launched by the Karnataka government, including Elevate100 which funded over 100 startups. With the support of the Karnataka government’s efforts and several startup-centric programmes, Bangalore or rather Karnataka has been the centre of attention for large MNCs, VC funds and startup

talent over the last couple of years. The city houses some of the best startup giants Flipkart, Ola Cabs among others. The state government is working with institutions and education bodies to encourage more entrepreneurial activities in the state. The government currently hosts a monthly startup open house where authorities, sit with startups and discuss their issues in detail. Bangalore’s cosmopolitan culture provides even the most niche start-up with the right target audience. The government with its proactive policies extends full support to startup nourishment. For example, the project to have 10,000 startups by 2023, New Age Incubation Network (NAIN) Scheme, the Startup Policy 2015-20, Creating incubation infrastructure through PPP, incentives and concessions, Dedicated Startup Cell, and the New Age Incubators to promote student startups. The new government also gives major focus to starts and the Chief Minister, HD Kumaraswamy, has proposed several policies in the budget to support the growth of startups in all sectors including IT, Agriculture, Irrigation, Food Processing, Manufacturing etc. With the productive use of the conducive environment provided by the government, Bangalore could become the undisputable leader in startup culture. Focus on Making Transport Corporations Profitable

D C Thammanna Minister for Transport Could you talk about the latest initiatives to increase the revenue of transport corporations? The government is taking various initiatives in this regard. All the corporations, except KSRTC, is running under loss of around Rs.500 Crores. Even KSRTC needs to increase the revenue and become more profitable like previous times. To overcome the issue, we are planning to implement several policies in the transportation sector. A major initiative is land auditing. All the corporations have large area of vacant lands under their possession and land auditing has not been done yet. After auditing these lands will utilised for various productive purposes like building shopping complexes, office spaces etc. For example, within the city the Kempegowda bus station has around 27 acres of land. Other than being a hub for buses it will be developed further

The state government is coming up with several initiatives to increase the revenue of various transport corporations. All the corporations, except KSRTC, is running under loss of around Rs.500 Crores. The department is auditing the unused land under the possession of various corporations and plans to utilise them for various productive purposes like building shopping complexes, office spaces etc. The central government has sanctioned smart city projects in places like Belgaum, Hubballi among others. We are planning to invest into the project and construct world-class bus stations in the smart cities with all infrastructure. There is a plan to build parking shelters for buses across the depots to avoid open space parking. Due to exposure of buses to rains and sun, there is a huge amount of money spent extra for the maintenance. This could be avoided, and crores of rupees could be saved by building parking shelters. Solar rooftop panel will be installed in all depots and we expect to generate 500MW power across Karnataka, says D C Thammanna, Minister for Transport. In an interview with Advantage Karnataka, he talks about his vision and priorities for the corporations during his term. with all modern facilities with an eye on commercial benefits. In Shantinagar, there are 15 acres of unused land and we are planning to use it for a developing a techno-park. The commercial possibilities should be exploited to the maximum to increase the revenue. The central government has sanctioned smart city projects in places like Belgaum, Hubballi among others. We are planning to invest into the project and construct world-class bus stations in the smart cities with all infrastructure, office spaces, and shopping complexes. The government also plans to build parking shelters for buses across the depots. Most of the depots in the state have around 10-15 acres of land, of which half is used for accommodating offices, workshops etc. Almost all the depots lack parking shelters for buses and they are parked in open spaces. Due to exposure of buses to rains and sun, there is a huge

amount of money spent extra for the maintenance. This could be avoided, and crores of rupees could be saved by building parking shelters. Another important initiative is monthly financial auditing. As of now there is no third-party involvement in the auditing except in KSRTC. But now we are planning to involve third parties in the process and strictly monitor the finance and revenue of all the corporations. The restructuring of rural connectivity is also under consideration. In many routes, corporations are facing huge loss. We expect to make them profitable and ensure last mile connectivity. The government is looking forward to introducing more electric vehicles in public transport sector. Could you elaborate on that? There is an increase in the number of electric vehicles in the state and the

tackle this.

transport corporations too are planning to support the drive. Electric buses are ‘Environment-friendly’ and profitable. KSRTC is progressing with the project to introduce electric buses in intercity routes like Bangalore-Mysore, Bangalore-Tumkur etc. BMTC is also going ahead with the plan of introducing around 150 e-buses in the city. Several private companies have come forward to collaborate with the government in this matter. We are also talking with the central government to provide subsidy for buying or leasing electric buses. We expect to roll out more e-buses in Karnataka by the end of the year. A plan is being mooted to install solar rooftop panels across depots. Could you share more details? Close on the heels of promoting green energy in the state, all transport corporations are planning to be solarpowered. We will soon install solar rooftop panel in all the depots across the state. Approximately 500MW of power could be generated through this project from entire Karnataka. It is one of the biggest projects from the sector and will be implemented on a PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) model. The appointment of consultants to prepare the DPR and estimate has already started. We expect to begin the project implementation soon. Once it is done it would be another way to save revenue by reducing electricity bill.

Could you share the latest updates on the government’s plan to issue free passes to students? The proposal to issue free bus passes to students is under consideration. With the Education department offering to bear 25% of the cost, a decision would be taken soon after discussing with Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy. Primary and Secondary Education Minister, N Mahesh, and I will meet him on this. A final decision will be taken soon. If the arrangement works out the road transport corporations will bear 25%, the education department another 25% with the rest 50% borne by the state government. Providing free bus pass to all categories of students - 19.6 lakh of them across the state will cost the exchequer about Rs.2000 crore annually, and we are yet to take a call on finding a method to

What are your vision and priorities for the corporations during your term as the transport minister? My priority will be to taking effective measures for increasing the revenue of all the corporations. Like I said, we have a slew of programmes on the anvil to make this happen. I will ensure that all of them will be implemented without delay. KSRTC is known for its leading position among India’s most profitable and modernised state-run transport corporations. It has received more than 100 awards over these years, both national and international. I will monitor the activities of KSRTC and ensure that the profit rate increases. I will advocate and encourage people to carpool and use public transport instead of private transport. We will take this up as a campaign for the next one year in coordination with the Urban Development Department to tackle the increasing traffic and parking problems in urban areas. Around 1.2 Lakh employees are there in the transport corporations altogether and their dependents are more than 4 Lakhs. Therefore around 6 Lakh people are depending on the transport corporations for their living. Most of them are from rural regions taking the roles of conductors, drivers, cleaners, and all. This is one of the few organisations that has given a lot of employment opportunities to rural people. We have to save their trust on the corporation and ensure their welfare. I will do everything possible to spearhead growth in the sector.

In an interview with Advantage Karnataka, he talks about TIEI’s operations and analyses Karnataka’s business environment. 16 August 2018

How do you analyse the new State budget of Karnataka? What all needs to be done further to promote the State’s image as an ideal investment destination? The budget is well balanced and largely aims at boosting the rural/urban economy while focusing on infrastructure building, promoting the SME sector with new job creations. The proposal to set up the help desk for GST reforms with regards to the allotment of industrial sheds is a welcome move. The move to infuse fresh investment to the tune of Rs.14,000 Crores to construct plug and play industrial sheds and for skill development programmes to create 8 Lakh jobs will boost the MSME industry which is strategically very important to support “Make in Karnataka” is highly commendable. The direction to benchmark global best practices such as Israeli model for boosting agricultural productivity and China model to enhance cost competitiveness in manufacturing such as toys, electronics goods etc. will help to scale up low cost manufacturing in model districts of Karnataka though the electricity tax increase on will have an impact on SMEs. The proposal to set up the help desk for GST will be will be a good platform for trade and industry to clarify many issues relating to GST. To attract further investments, it is very important to focus more on infrastructure development in terms of building more plug and play industrial parks supported by adequate logistics and network connectivity,

uninterrupted water, and power supply, accelerated approvals and simplification of procedures to reduce the lead time, development of housing colonies close to the industrial parks and enhancing the quality of skill development with the use of new technologies. As the new Vice President of BCIC, how do you look at the growth of industrial sector in Karnataka? What are your vision and priorities to promote the growth further during your term? Karnataka is emerging as one of the leading industrial states in India holding the fifth position in terms of GDP growth clocking over 17%, apart from being the IT hub of India. Around 60% of the biotechnology companies have a base in Karnataka generating more than 50% of the total revenues earned by the Indian biotechnology industry. Apart from being the largest software exporting state of India, Karnataka has a robust base in textile, agro, based industries aerospace, heavy engineering, tourism, and automobile engineering clusters. Thus, there is a big industrial diversity resulting in a huge pool of talented engineers spread across many sectors. Further, there is a very promising industrial climate in terms of conducive labour, supportive infrastructure backed by encouraging government policies and support to promote “Make in Karnataka”. It is very important to drive overall competitiveness in terms of cost efficiency,

total logistics cost, labour productivity, supply chain capability, office efficiency by simplifying duplication of work, infrastructure, and ease of doing business. In this regard, I strongly believe that we can realise the overall competitiveness through a strong collaboration of Government, corporates, industries bodies and the society based on a winwin approach to promote a strong inclusive growth. I would like to focus on enhancing value to our member companies through good communication with all stake holders. I would like to work on promoting cost competitiveness through efficiency improvement by cluster programmes and best practices sharing. To substantiate this further I would like to emphasise on the human resource development based on a systematic approach. Further I would like to enhance the synergy of various industrial chambers and bodies to work towards a common purpose.

facility in a short time with a big support from the Government of Karnataka and all our stakeholders. We have produced more than 2 Lakhs engines from this plant. Spread across 22 acres, the Bangalore facility is the first Diesel engine plant of Toyota in India and third globally. What do you think about Toyota selecting Bangalore for its operations? Globally there are three GD (Global diesel plant) to machine and assemble the engines at Japan, Thailand, and India (TIEI). In Bangalore, there are many strategic advantages such as proximity to the vehicle plant, conducive industrial climate, and excellent support by Government of Karnataka. Further Toyota group has a strong base in Bangalore to effectively coordinate

with all stakeholders and bring in synergy. Also, the gifted weather almost throughout the year is a blessing to do business. TIEI’s vision is to become the No. 1 Engine Manufacturing Company, in India. How successful has been the company in achieving this vision? As a first step we have benchmarked the key performance indicators with respect to these global plants and we are focusing to achieve these levels in terms of safety, quality, productivity, cost, HRD, etc., and in this regard, we are establishing the global manufacturing system. Further, we are also benchmarking the India best practices in terms of HR, supply chain management, etc., towards becoming the no. 1 engine manufacturing company in India.

Toyota Industries Engine India Pvt. Ltd. (TIEI) started the new Engine business in March 2016. Could you talk about the latest operations? We started the new Global Diesel engine plant at TIEI for manufacturing 2.4 litre and 2.8 litre GD engines for Innova Crysta and Fortuner respectively. We have been able to establish a world class engine August 2018 17

angalore-based Navratna Defence PSU, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), has achieved a Net Turnover of Rs.2077.84 Cr, during the 1st quarter of FY 2018-19, registering a growth of about 23%, over the Net Turnover of Rs. 1694.55 Cr recorded in the corresponding period of the previous

year. Profit Before Tax (PBT) during the 1st quarter of FY 2018-19 stood at Rs. 250.21 Cr, registering a growth of about 40% over the Profit Before Tax (PBT) of Rs. 179.27 Cr recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year. Profit After Tax (PAT) during the 1st quarter of FY 2018-19 stood at Rs. 179.73

With the entire country calling for electric vehicles, do you see any challenges in diesel engine manufacturing? What are the expansion plans for TIEI in India? On a personal note, I believe the direction towards electrified vehicles is a welcoming move. However, the journey is going to be quite challenging. Ideally a phase wise transition to electrification is viable considering the development of technologies at a competitive cost. Towards this, adopting hybrid technology will be a progressive

step as most of the parts for hybrid and electric vehicles are common such as battery, motor etc. Currently, the cost competitive manufacturing and required infrastructure for the same is a challenge. In this background, though the diesel engine volumes are likely to come down in the near future, it cannot be substituted by electric vehicles in one go. Also, with new regulations kicking in (such as Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency - CAFE) near future, it is logical to adopt alternate fuel mobility technologies towards electrification considering the national

Cr, registering a growth of about 43% over the Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs. 125.32 Cr recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year. The order book position of the company as on 1st July 2018, stood at Rs.41645 Cr. Earlier, BEL has registered a turnover of Rs.10085 Crores in 2017-18 compared to Rs.8825 Crores in 2016-17. Also, BEL’s has secured excellent “MoU” Rating and the turnover from indigenous technology is 89%. BEL’s sales from defence business is 85% during 2017-18 and has commenced supply for Ground Based Mobile ELINT System and Battlefield Surveillance System. Though the fall in interest income, higher wage cost and more tax outgo have caused a fall in the profitability during last fiscal, M V Gowtama, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL, has said that the sales have grown around 14 per cent last fiscal and the PSU is hopeful of around 15 per cent growth in revenues in the current financial year.

issues of emissions and fuel imports. In addition, it is interesting to note that currently the power generated is largely through burning of coal and unless we progress rapidly in generating power through non-conventional ways such as wind, solar or tidal sources, the real purpose of electrification can’t be met. Another big challenge is the availability of high-speed charging infrastructure across the length and breadth of the country in the years to come. It is important to remain technology agnostic with alternate fuel driven mobility. Finally, which technology succeeds depends on many factors in the market place and we would be ready with our solutions to meet customer expectations. We do not have any concrete plans yet with regard to future expansions. We will closely work with our customer (Toyota Kirloskar Motor - TKM) and our parent company TICO (Toyota Industries Corporation) to review our business operations in line with the overall directions.

obots for scavenging in Karnataka could be a reality soon as Kerala startup Genrobotics says it plans to unveil five more ‘Bandicoot’ robots for cleaning sewer holes, including four pilot projects in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, after garnering tremendous response to its innovative idea of using robots for the task and potentially eliminating the ageold practice of manual scavenging. Genrobotics has received an invitation to present “Bandicoot” in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Of the five new robots, one each will be used in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for pilot projects, two will go

to Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and one will be used by the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), the founders said. Founded in 2015, GenRobotics specialises in powered exoskeletons and human controlled robotic systems. Genrobotics launched the world’s first manhole cleaning robot ‘Bandicoot’ in Thiruvananthapuram on an experimental basis in February this year. The Bandicoot has four limbs and a bucket system attached to a spiderweblike extension, which can go inside the manhole. The waste at the bottom of the manhole is shovelled into the bucket

system and lifted out. The robot has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. Apart from the Kerala Financial Corporation (KFC), Genrobotics is getting funds from venture capitalist Unicorn India Ventures for the production of the robots. The company has been incubated under the KSUM, a nodal agency of the Kerala government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state. The Kerala Water Authority and Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) have signed an MoU for the transfer of technology and products, including the use of robots for cleaning up sewers. Genrobotics say they have already trained two manhole cleaners on the use of the robot and it has been functioning without any technical glitches so far. The company is planning to train 20 more workers in the hope of eventually ending the practice of manual scavenging. For ease-of-use, the robots will be equipped to respond to commands in local language.

The Hormonal Superpowers

Oral Health: A Mirror to Your Overall Health body? or that any problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Our mouth is teeming with bacteria: most of them harmless. A drop of saliva has more bacteria (over 8 billion) than there are people on this planet! These microbes can easily enter the general circulation. Without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral diseases such as Dental decay (Dental Caries), gum disease (Periodontitis) [Two of the most common oral diseases affecting mankind]. During the past 15 years, exciting scientific literature has identified infection and inflammatory conditions in the oral cavity to be the risk factors in the development and progression of many systemic diseases and disorders affecting general health. Evidence based research suggests that these relationships and associations are biologically plausible. Few of specific bacteria from these common dental infections such as periodontal disease, abscessed teeth, and failed root canal treated tooth have found to be associated with diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes and respiratory diseases. It is proved that oral microorganisms can directly act on distant tissues and organs, while the inflammatory mediators produced in the periodontal tissues due to infection may cause systemic effects. The body’s natural defences

and good personal oral health care, such as daily brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing, can keep these bacteria under control. Some of the evidences from epidemiological research suggest that conservative treatment like professional cleaning of teeth for gum disease in patients with diabetes mellitus may reduce levels of blood glucose levels for at least three months. How can I protect my oral health? Most people are careless about oral health just because they are ignorant of its consequences. But you should remember that it is always better to prevent than cure. Taking care of your oral health is not a big deal. You just have to include it into your routine. Here are some tips to help you pursue an oral-healthy life. • To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene every day. • Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day with

fluoride toothpaste. • Eat a healthy and nutritious diet and limit between-meal snacks. • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. • Avoid tobacco use. • Schedule regular dental check-ups with your dentist. The dentists now have the added responsibility of diagnosing and treating dental disease not only to help patients save their teeth and gums, but also potentially save their lives. During an Adrenaline Rush you may feel superhuman with heightened powers. But, according to the studies by British Heart Foundation, high levels of adrenaline in the body can cause severe health problems to your heart.

T

hose who have watched Anand Shankar’s Tamil movie, Iru Mugan, which starred Vikram in the roles of both protagonist and antagonist know a bit exaggerated presentation of Adrenaline Rush. The movie revolves around a highconcept involving a super drug that increases one’s adrenaline flow and turns him into a superman for five minutes. After the drug intake the people transform into herculean cyborgs with extraordinary physical and mental strength and could perform unbelievable stunts. In the movie itself it is explained that the secret behind the drug is the play of the super-hormone in human body - Adrenaline. What is Adrenaline? Adrenaline, also called epinephrine, is a hormone released by your adrenal glands, which sits above your kidneys, and some neurons. The human body uses adrenaline rush as one of its vital defence mechanisms in a stressful situation by triggering the

release of the hormone into the bloodstream within a few seconds, thus earned the name ‘Rush’. Adrenaline is responsible for the fight-orflight reaction in a hazardous situation, and it initiates specific processes in the body like sending extra oxygen to the lungs to aid a person to run away. What does it do to your body? Adrenaline triggers several changes in the body. It gives you some short-term superpowers like decreasing the body’s ability to feel pain, increasing physical strength sharpening mental focus, which will allow you to think quickly and execute a sudden escape from the situation. It increases the heart rate by redirecting blood towards the muscles, causing a surge in energy, or shaking limbs. Adrenaline relaxes your airways and widens your pupils to let more light enter the eyes. As side effects, you may sweat profusely, feel lightheaded and have temperature variation due to changes in blood and oxygen supply. The effects of

Vikram after taking the super drug in the movie Iru Mugan

adrenaline on the body can last for up to 1 hour after an adrenaline rush. What causes adrenaline rush? The primary causes of an adrenaline rush include a threat, stress, anxiety, and excitement. Adrenaline rush may sometimes occur when there is no real threat, for example an exam or job interview, and has the same effect on the body whether or not the danger is present. Extreme physical activities like riding a rollercoaster or doing a bungee jump could give you an adrenaline rush. Some finds enjoyment in this physical phenomenon and this promotes the adrenalinehigh games like paintballing, paragliding, skydiving, freefall etc. which offer deliberate triggering of the hormone. People who have PTSD may experience an adrenaline rush when thinking about their stress or trauma from the past. Known as hyperarousal it can lead to concentration problems, jittery feeling and irritability. Sometimes a tumour in the gland or nervous system can cause the body to create too much adrenaline. Too much is too bad Though Adrenaline Rush is not long-lasting, the burst of human jet fuel can be a good thing as it de-stresses body

and mind by making you energetic and senses revived. But, too much adrenaline rush can cause weakening of heart muscle or even heart attack in people with heart disease. It can also lead to the shrinkage of the hippocampus which is the brain’s main memory centre. Too much stress can also increase blood pressure and result in tiny tears in our arteries where plaque can form. How to control Adrenaline Rush? The body’s reaction to a release of adrenaline frequently could be controlled to avoid its ill effects. Deep inhalation through your nose for three seconds and exhalation through your mouth for six seconds continuously can make you feel calm. Yoga can help reduce anxiety and control the release of adrenaline. Yoga or stretching exercises may also relieve stress and anxiety. Choosing and repeating one specific word or picturing a relaxing image is another method that may help to reduce stress. Just 20 minutes of mindful meditation a day can lower your blood pressure and help you keep cool. You should consider medical advice in case of frequent adrenaline rushes, as these can have an impact on health in the long term. August 2018 23

H

onda Cars India has finally given an update to its premium hatchback, Jazz, with minimal cosmetic changes, a slew of new features, and a revised variant line-up for 2018. Compared to the pre-facelift Honda Jazz, the new car is a lot more well-equipped and feature-rich right from the entrylevel variant itself. Honda offers the front armrest, reverse parking sensors, dual airbags, and ABS as standard across the variants. Though the lack of a visible facelift, except new LED taillights, is a bit disappointing as Jazz has been present in the segment since 2015, the new version can confidently take on its main rivals Maruti Baleno, Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Elite i20 with upgraded features. Honda has removed the E, S, and SV petrol variants from the line-up and the

Honda Rolls Out Feature-Packed Jazz 2018

Powertrain Honda has hardly given any mechanical changes to the new Jazz. Under the hood, you have the same two options of 90PS 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and 100 bhp 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engines. Transmission duties on the petrol car are handled by a 5-Speed manual and an optional CVT automatic transmission. The diesel variant is only available with new 6-Speed manual transmission delivering 100PS power and mileage around 25Km/l. base model V Petrol is available at a price of Rs.7.35 Lakhs and VX Petrol at Rs.7.79 Lakhs (both ex-showroom Bangalore). Both petrol variants have automatic options at a price Rs.8.55 Lakhs and Rs.8.99 Lakhs respectively. The diesel variants start with S Diesel at 8.05 Lakhs and the top-spec VX MT diesel variant is priced at Rs 9.29 Lakhs. Exterior The new Jazz is very much akin to its predecessor in terms of looks with not many noticeable skin changes. The chrome door handles for top-end variant is an addition and the new LED band for the taillamps, which makes the rear more stylish, are the only exterior changes. Also, the 2018 Jazz gets two new paint options: Radiant Red Metallic and Lunar

Silver Metallic. In fact, new ingredients like the sporty crossfade monoform design, bold super slick front grille, side character lines, dynamic alloy wheels and rear LED wing light give it a fresh look. Interior The interior too is not very different with the nearly-same design and cabin layout of the older Jazz. Honda offers the choices of beige/black dual tone interior or all-black interior. The Digipad 2.0 infotainment system with a bigger display is a visible change in the dashboard design. The cruise controls are now embedded as buttons in the steering wheel on its right spoke similar to new Honda City. Honda claims that Jazz offers the best-in-class space and comfort, with touchscreen AC controls, leather wrapped steering wheel and an advanced instrument cluster. Features In this category the new Jazz excels with an array of addition and a few omissions to lock horns with its rivals, especially i20. For example, the AVN (Audio, Video, & Navigation) system no longer offers a CD or DVD player as before. Honda Digipad 2.0 infotainment system in new Jazz supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other new features include - one push start/ stop button with White and Red illumination (CVT and Diesel variants),

Good or Bad Choice? Though the new Jazz comes with rich new features, Honda’s apprehension to give an appealing facelift to the 3-year old car may not be acceptable when it is compared to Baleno and new facelifted Elite i20. Moreover, Jazz’s starting price of Rs.7.35 Lakhs is around Rs.2 Lakhs more than these rivals despite any changes in outlook. Honda could have included some of the visual updations like the ‘Solid Wing Face’ headlights and grille design from the global-spec Jazz facelift. But, Honda might outweigh it rivals with the comfort and stability of its vehicle. The competition is yet to be witnessed. As of now, considering the price variation there is no hurry to upgrade your old Jazz to the new one. For others, it is a chance to feel the power, comfort and luxury of Honda’s new hatchback. But still, it is better to wait till the new Jazz proves its grip over the rivals.

The Kawasaki Z900RS looks identical to the standard Z900 but gets a multitude of changes. Kawasaki Z900RS is powered by the same 900 cc in-line, liquidcooled, four-cylinder engine that powers the Z900 with a revised output of 109 bhp at 8500 rpm and 98.5 Nm of peak torque at 6500 rpm. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has introduced the 2018 Navi moto-scooter at Rs. 44,775 (exshowroom, Delhi). The 2018 Honda Navi is available in two new colour options Ranger Green and Ladakh Brown, taking the total count to six. The main highlight is the newly added fuel gauge which is seen as a welcome change since the Navi sports only a 3.8 litre fuel tank. The new Navi sports a refreshed instrument cluster consisting of a digital and analogue unit, new paint schemes and refreshed graphics. Other

updates include metal muffler protector, all new body coloured elements- grab rail, headlight cover, rear view mirrors and sporty red colour cushion spring. Honda Navi is powered by the same 109 cc single-cylinder, air-cooled motor in Activa. The engine churns out 8 bhp at 7000 rpm and 8.96 Nm of peak torque at 5500 rpm. The model comes with telescopic forks up front and a single-shock at the rear, drum brakes and tubeless tyres. The moto-scooter continues to come with a number customisation options, including a host of accessories. Along with the convenient value addition like stylish fuel gauge and muffler protector, new vibrant colours offer an extra zing for those who have an appetite for uniqueness.

At a speed of 6400Mbps the new LPDDR5 can transfer 51.2GB of data, or approximately 14 full-HD video files (3.7GB each) in just a second. The new 8GB LPDDR5 DRAM is the latest addition to the company’s premium DRAM line-up, which includes 10nm-class 16GB GDDR6 DRAM and 16Gb DDR5 DRAM. It is expected to play a major role in supporting the upcoming 5G network and AI-powered mobile applications. It is available in two bandwidths -

6400Mbps at a 1.1 operating voltage, and 5500Mbps at 1.05 operating voltage. When in ‘active mode’, the LPDDR5 DRAM will automatically lower its voltage in accordance to different application’s operating speed to save battery life. Samsung has also introduced a ‘deep sleep mode’ that cuts the power usage to a bare minimum, i.e. approximately half the ‘idle mode’ of the current LPDDR4X DRAM.

Cycleloop Last Mile Connectivity in Urban Transport In the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Innovation Contest 2018, the award for the most feasible design in the category of next-generation transportation, was won by the Indian startup–Tietran. The Tietran Cycleloop is designed to work in a semi-controlled environment with selfbalancing ability. Combined with smart switching and intelligent algorithms, it is an example of energy-efficient, sustainable, and integrated transport system. Suresh Babu Salla MD, Primerail Infralabs Pvt. Ltd.

28 August 2018

Autonomous, Connected, Electric, and Pooling for effective utilisation of vehicles and public transport systems is on the rise. Although many surface mobility innovations like PBS, ride hailing, ride sharing etc. are workable, if we analyse holistically, they add to the already congested roads, causes pollution, poses commuter stress and are difficult to ride in hostile weather. Sustainability of transportation is evaluated with respect to public adoption, average speed, energy consumption and pollution. Why public prefer certain modes over others? How does commute time play a role in mode selection or shift? What are the factors playing role in energy consumption and pollution? Based on study, it is clear that public prefers a transport

mode which is exhaustive (i.e. less need for interchange – network is widespread) & intensive (i.e. less waiting time - vehicles are available at frequent intervals) and convenient with latest technologies. Average speed is dependent on stops, number of intersections, signals, clear route availability etc. It is clear from Physics that higher the kerb weight of a vehicle, higher is the operational energy consumption. Higher kerb weight also demands heavier infrastructure. Pollution is dependent on source of energy, efficiency of vehicle, average speed. Modes will be exhaustive when the unit infrastructure cost is less and can be offered intensively when the vehicle cost is less. Reliable & Seamless integrated mobility till last ¼ mile (Five Minute Walk-FMW) is a must

to encourage sustainable public transportation. Study shows that average speed & reliability of dedicated modes (like Metro, PRT, BRT etc) is high compared to road vehicles. Electric vehicles and other battery-less or 3rd rail vehicles reduce pollution. One potential mode can be Cycleloop PRT, where commuter rides e-cycle in a dedicated path – elevated, at grade or underground. e-Bike with kerb weight per rider at 15 kg being 1/50th of car or 1/10th of other PRT systems makes it a sustainable mode. Cycleloop tube will be light, sleek & scalable and can be modular erected, either on modified street lamp-posts or can be hanged/suspended between the two stations. Embarking and disembarking points or offline stations can be at an interval which suits FMW to mass public transit. In terms of convenience, guided e-Bike can be made self-balancing thus encouraging driverless on-demand vehicles. e-Bike equipped with smart electronics & drive controls can intelligently respond to field sensors and autonomously move reacting to Central Controller. Smart switching allows travel from origin to destinations without interchange of cycles. DC Powered, Batteryless e-cycle with voluntary manual pedalling makes it sustainable and provides health benefits. Tandem e-bike, Smart switching and Platoon operations algorithm options provide superior through-put of the Cycleloop. Thus, Cycleloop PRT will be exhaustive, intensive, convenient, reliable, speedy, sustainable, safe, pollution-free, and healthy alternative mode for last mile connectivity in cities.

‘On Top of The World’

T

he 21st edition of the quadrennial football extravaganza - the FIFA World Cup 2018- has come to a thrilling end in Russia. France can now rule the world for the next four years as the they have triumphed over Croatia by 4-2 in the final to earn their second World Cup title, and first since hosting the tournament in 1998. Moreover, French head coach Didier Deschamps has become the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach. And it was the first ever World Cup to be held in eastern Europe. The tournament turned out to be less about Russia than, quite simply, about football with “its transcendent drama, its universal appeal, its power to enthral billions of us across the planet and, to stir debates that never end.” The Russia 2018 has been full of surprises and predictions have gone wrong right from the kick-off. The tournament has begun without Italy who did not qualify. The defending champions Germany did not survive the group level matches. Argentina and Portugal led by young legends Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo fell in Round of 16 without seeing Quarter Final, leaving millions around the globe disappointed. Five-time champions

30 August 2018

Brazil was beaten by Belgium in the Quarter Final. Russia and England have displayed one of their best performances in the world cup with England reaching the Semi Final to the surprise of many. The Russia 2018 has witnessed the dominance of Europeans over the Latin Americans in World Cup once again with no single Latin American representation in tournament beyond Quarter Final. Above all, Croatia have reached their first world cup final beating England 2-1 during extra-time and displayed their ever best run in the history. The Great Final The finalists Croatia and France have met at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, ending the month-long tournament played across Russia. France has entered the tournament as a favourite, powered by stars such as Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, while Croatia was a longshot for victory. Croatia’s appearance in the final had a lot to do with their historic streak of endurance. It was a day of firsts for Croatia: first time in a World Cup Final, first team to get to the final after winning three straight extra time games. The last match of Russia 2018 had as many goals as the four previous World Cup finals between them, and a six-goal

thriller summed up an unexpectedly entertaining tournament. According to Matt Dickinson of The Times, it was “A tournament you dared not look away from for fear of missing something extraordinary had a final played out to a soundtrack of thunder and lightning above Moscow, and a trophy presentation in a downpour for France, the world champions, which was almost biblical. It was an appropriately dramatic, almost cinematic, climax.” At 18 minutes in, Croatia received its first

major blow. The Les Bleus took the lead at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow with the first ever World Cup final own goal from Croatia’s forward Mario Mandzukic. It put Croatia in a tough spot early in the match and Mandzukic had the misfortune of being the first player to score an own goal in a World Cup Final. But the Croats managed to level the match in the next ten minutes through Ivan Perisic. It was indeed a goal to remember. Perisic who received the long free kick sent by Croatia toward the far edge of the penalty area, took one touch around a defender and fired a rocket with his left foot through traffic and into the side netting. But, Perisic’s happiness did not last long as the video assistant-referee ruled a handball against him, following which Antoine Griezmann scored from the penalty spot giving France the lead again before the break. As NPR has reported, the tournament was the first time that FIFA “has allowed video replay to be used to make penalty calls in a World Cup.” Griezmann’s penalty kick was the first VAR-assisted score in a World Cup final. Following the penalty-kick goal from Antoine Griezmann, two more goals from Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe in the second half gave France the upper hand of 4-1. France’s Paul Pogba scored at the 59-minute mark, quickly followed by Mbappe six minutes later. That goal was also historic. It made 19-year-old Mbappe the first teenager to score at a World Cup Final since Pele, the Brazilian soccer legend. Pele has later congratulated Mbappe in a Tweet, saying “If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may

have to dust my boots off again...” By some measures, Croatia dominated the match. It held possession of the ball for more than 60 percent of it. It had better pass accuracy than France and made nearly double the attempts at the goal than France did. Though, Mandzukic got on the scoresheet at the right end after 69 minutes but - Croatia were unable to mount a comeback despite their overwhelming possession - 66% to 34%. The goals by Pogba and Mbappe were enough to lift one of the pre-tournament favourites to the title, capping off a magnificent run in the group stage and the knockout stage that featured wins over Australia, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium. Game play was not the only action happening on the field. During the second half, a group of intruders stormed onto the pitch dressed in what appeared to be police uniforms. The group was

eventually taken off the field by officials. Before that, one of them managed to give a high five to France’s Mbappe. In a match that featured anything you could have ever imagined, an own goal, a goalkeeper gaffe, pitch invaders and a teenager wunderkind finding the back of the net, France rolled to a convincing 4-1 lead and managed to hold on to earn its second star. After the match French forward Griezmann said: “I do not know where I am! I am really happy. It was a very difficult match, Croatia had a great game. We came back, and we managed to make the difference.” For French coach Didier Deschamps, it was like being on top of the world. “We are world champions and France are going to be on top of the world for next four years,” he said after the game and called the tournament a “beautiful celebration of football.” Moreover, it was possible that nobody was more excited than French President Emmanuel Macron, who was seen cheering from the VIP gallery. 2018 World Cup Player Awards Croatia skipper Luka Modric has been the Golden Ball for the World Cup’s best player. The Golden Boot, awarded to the leading scorer, went to England’s Harry Kane who netted six times. French striker Mbappe, 19, has won the best young player after his four goals in Russia. Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois won the Golden Glove, given to the best goalkeeper and Spain’s disciplinary record was honoured with the tournament’s Fair Play Trophy.

he Bangalore Chamber of Industry Commerce (BCIC), will collaborate with the state government to improve Ease of Doing Business (EoDB). Several leaders of various industry verticals based out of Bangalore heading Expert Committees at BCIC have deliberated on key issues hindering seamless investment flows both from domestic and overseas into Karnataka. The suggestions raised at the meeting will be shared in due course with various government Departments in Karnataka in order to regain the state’s top spot in Business index in India. Some issues on EODB involved Critical issues related to enhancing Single window clearance, quicker land allotments, improving power, water and sanitation systems, Labour reforms,

Industry Cluster development, easing of pollution control norms, reducing red tape, protecting investors’ interests, labour market regulations, transparency in tax laws, traffic management and several others have been discussed. Kishore Alva, President, BCIC, has said that GST is in place and the first quarter business results are encouraging, exports continue to improve, and consumeroriented businesses have reported good sales. ISRO Ropes in Private Firms in Bangalore for its Satellites EC Makes Elections Inclusive with Braille EPIC cards

T

he private firms in Bangalore which provide services in the design, manufacture, and assembly of space satellite systems are about to get a major push. Close on the heels of active private participation in defence, India’s space programmes too are set to witness contribution by private players. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has allowed two private companies and a government firm to make 27 satellites in the next three years, showing the industry readiness. The new contract will see Bangalore-based Alpha Design Technologies -led consortium which includes six SMEs- Newtech; Aidin; Aniara; DCX; Vinyas and Exseed Space-, along with Hyderabad-based Tata Advanced Systems Limited as the two private players selected by ISRO. These two and Bangalore-based defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will make three satellites each per annum for the next three years. UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), ISRO’s nodal satellites division, has reportedly signed the contract on behalf of ISRO. According to reports, the contract is for each of the three to make nine 1.6 tonne to 2-3 tonne satellites, based on requirement, which means they’ll make a total of nine every year, and 27 by the end of July 2021. In Bengaluru at ISITE, these three firms will be working in a new facility created for private industry. About 50 members from each partner will separately work with URSC engineers to complete the project. It is learnt that URSC unit, ISRO Satellite Integration and Test Establishment or ISITE, will provide three separate work stations for the three partners. This is not the first time the consortium led by Alpha Design Technologies is joining hands with ISRO in its space programmes. The IRNSS-1H and IRNSS-1I, in the last year and earlier this year respectively, have been assembled by Alpha Design Technologies. All but Exseed Space were already involved in “We signed similar agreements as the Tatas and BEL and I hope that creates the ecosystem to allow more industries in the future,” said Colonel HS Shankar, Chairman and Managing Director, Alpha Design. A URSC official signed the agreements with the three entities in the presence of URSC Director M. Annadurai. URSC estimates a requirement of around 71 satellites till 2021. It means adding 12 satellites a year or one every month. In 2017, it made a record 12 spacecraft but is unable to cope with a growing demand from new applications. Around 35 Indian spacecrafts are active in space and will need to be replaced as they expire over time. At the signing event, Dr. Annadurai underlined the need to involve industry in building future Indian satellites - first at ISRO’s premises under its guidance, and later on its own. Recently BEL CMD M.V. Gowtama had said the defence major planned to take up satellite activities later at a new 30-acre aerospace and defence park in north Bengaluru. A spokesperson for TASL said it would participate in the full AIT of satellites of the class of 1,000 kg to 4,000 kg.

metal materials from EOS in the future.

Breakthrough Innovation in 3D Printing EOS and Additive Works present Amphyon software for simulation aided additive manufacturing which will reduce development costs and increase part quality. Amphyon is a software solution which simulates the AM building process before it takes place, highlighting and optimising possible problematic areas of the part to be build. With the user-friendly and intuitive-to-handle software, shape accuracy, surface quality as well as build productivity and stability can be increased. Amphyon has been developed by Additive Works, a German startup founded 2015. As part of the partnership with the company, EOS is offering the software solution to its customers.

C

reating breakthrough innovations, EOS, a leading technology supplier in industrial 3D printing of metals and polymers, has entered into a collaboration with German start-up Additive Works to enhance the additive manufacturing (AM) process with metal materials. The cooperation focuses on the simulation based preprocessing software Amphyon: A solution which simulates the AM building process before it takes place, highlighting and optimising possible problematic areas of the part to be build. With the userfriendly and intuitive-to-handle software, shape accuracy, surface quality as well as build productivity and stability can be increased. Using Amphyon, companies can save time and costs in developing additively manufactured components. Dr. Nils Keller, CEO, Additive Works states: “Although the AM-technology itself is very mature, especially for unexperienced users it can be difficult to predict if a part will be 3D printed as expected. So, when a part is manufactured with issues, e.g. surface defects, it means a waste of machine time and material

costs. An answer to this challenge is Amphyon. Using simulation software is standard when it comes to conventional manufacturing methods. With Amphyon, simulation now also becomes a solution for additive manufacturing, underlining the increased use and changing requirements of industrial 3D printing for serial production.” Experience the part virtually before it is build Amphyon helps to predict possible build job challenges and automates the know-how based pre-processing steps. This way companies can optimise their parts in forefront, minimise the risk of flaws but benefit from a successful build process. To enable an easy use, Amphyon orients all steps along the “ASAP” principle (Assessment –Simulation – Adaption – Process), a new workflow for Direct Metal Laser Sintering job preparation. Consisting of a couple of different software modules, Amphyon especially addresses the application areas part assessment, support optimization and process simulation.

On the assessment stage, an examiner module evaluates the geometry of the part and assesses all possible build-up orientations. Doing this manually can be challenging as the ideal orientation always depends on the application in terms of build time, support volume, post processing efforts and part deformation. Thanks to the Amphyon design evaluation, the software automatically finds the best part orientation in the build chamber of the 3D printing system. On the simulation stage, there are two modules available: The Support module, which is in a beta phase at present, and the Mechanical Process Simulation (MPS) module. With the Support module, optimised support structures can be generated automatically. These structures support the part on the build platform and define the process results. routines adapt the support perforation as well as the interfaces between part and support based on the calculated process loads. Thereby, not only time and costs of manual support generation can be saved, but also support material can be saved and process stability is increased, avoiding costly build fails. The MPS module offers users a fast and intuitive way to simulate process mechanics and to calculate distortions. Such distortions can be compensated easily by the software by exporting and building a “pre-deformed” STL file. In the end the simulation capabilities of Amphyon help to assure process stability and design accuracy of the application manufactured. To ensure an easy and accurate simulation, key EOS metal materials are integrated into Amphyon software and are calibrated with regard to their material properties. The goal is to calibrate and implement all

Partnering to streamline the 3D printing process Martin Steuer, Head of Product Management Software and Services at EOS says: “While the vast majority of the public thinks that additive manufacturing allows for the creation of three dimensional objects from a digital design by just clicking a button, users of the technology know that the reality is more complex. United by the mission to make Industrial 3D printing even more intuitive and user friendly, EOS is happy to partner with Additive Works on the subject of AM-processsimulation. ‘Simulate before you create’ really is a key factor to ensure a successful laser sintering process with metal materials, right from the start.” Amphyon has been developed by Additive Works, a German startup founded 2015. As part of the partnership with the company, EOS is offering the software solution to its customers. In addition both companies will develop further enhancements for Amphyon strengthening the EOS portfolio of material, process and system by the goal to integrate the Amphyon assessment, simulation and support modules into EOSPRINT 2, EOS’ job and process management software. of birders and their findings, this hobby is getting popular among many creating enthusiasm. I would like to begin by sharing the story of how I became a birder. This was 12 years back at Lalbagh, Bangalore. Initially, it looked quite funny to see a group of 20 odd people staring at a tree with binoculars continuously for more than 10 minutes. They were pointing at some bird and calling it by a strange name. This tree was huge and dense. I became inquisitive but could not spot anything. Since I had come for jogging, I just trotted along with

aving a hobby in one’s life means a lot, because it helps you to keep yourself alive after a stressed-out day at work. Birding or birdwatching is one of the hobbies people want to pursue, especially those who are nature-lovers. Because it allows you to explore your curiosities, gives you a reason to stop and contemplate, and to recognise what a joy it is to be in this world. Birding activity is very popular in western countries. In USA more than 20% are interested in birdwatching. Based on studies, it is only around 0.05% in our country, including bird photographers. Now, due to increasing digital presence

them. Later, I was told that this group had been meeting for the past 30 years, every month. That made me curious to check out what kept these passionate people go on like that. I could not follow their discussions nor could spot or identify any birds. Sometimes they asked me whether I have spotted the bird, and I just nodded my head up and down and sometime right and left. If ever you told them that you have not spotted, they will not leave you until you spot one for sure. With great difficulty, I tried again to mingle with

the group and ask questions. One day, a birder spotted a green bird calling loudly at a close distance. Through my binocular, I too saw that fascinating bird and found that it was calling out without opening its beak. It was the first time I saw something like that which made me begin my birding days. Every time when I was with the group, I collected more information about birds. Then, I went on to identify and study common birds like sparrow, crows, kite, myna and parakeet. I began to be passionate about birding. Since then, during my trips both nationally and internationally, I pick up a binocular and go out to roam around like a knowledgeable birder with it around my neck. I even started asking my other friends to join me for birding. Birdwatching has taken me to the deep forests of Tamil Nadu Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal Rajasthan, Assam, UP and of Karnataka, Odisha repeatedly. I have seen more than 30 bird sanctuaries, tiger reserves, and National parks. Ever since I have fallen in love with birds I never got myself bored even after retiring from service. The love has grown so much that I completed a one-year course in Ornithology from BNHS, Bombay with flying colours. Birding in Karnataka Karnataka is very rich in flora and fauna

with rainforests in abundance. The Western Ghats of the state, numerous forests and hundreds of lakes give shelter to more than 511 out of 1321 bird species found in India. Karnataka has the second highest number of Important Birding Areas (IBAs), among all states in India, according to a report published by BNHS. IBA is an area recognised by BirdLife International as being globally important habitat for the conservation of bird population. Karnataka has many endemic birds. In the state there are more than 95 hotspots including Hampi, Ramanagara, Bidar, Bannerghatta, Hadinaru, Nandi Hills among others, each where more than 150 bird species occur. Many foreigners visit Karnataka to see these birds. Realising the potential, the state government has started promoting Bird Tourism through various initiative including the conduct of annual ‘Karnataka Bird Festival’. Bird census is carried out to check the health of ecosystems. NGOs, State Forest Department, and other Government agencies organise bird census programmes to estimate the numbers of each bird species at a specific area. In Bangalore, many people organise bird races as a regular event yearly. Since most of the birds are active in the mornings you need to be early riser to reach the birding spot before sunrise. A love for walking and patience are the two qualities a birder should possess. One walks typically 4-10 kms in the green and get fresh Oxygen. We also go close to mother nature and start enjoying the wild animals, butterflies, and other lesser known fauna. This opens unlimited mysteries of nature. During bird trails one never feels tired and hungry. The physical comfort takes a back seat. Are you hooked, not yet? If you have the right interest, the hobby simply needs just a binocular, notebook, and a field guide. My experience is that if anybody gets introduced to the birds with an open mind he will definitely get addicted to this hobby. Ever since I got intoxicated with bird watching, every Sunday 6am to 10am, I go to some forest/park/lake to watch birds. I welcome anyone who is interested can give it a try. What do you lose? All you need to start is to just walk out of your house and watch those beautiful aerodynamic-shaped creatures.

Indira Canteens to Serve Ragi Mudde from August

P

eople can soon enjoy Ragi Muddes (ragi balls) at Indira Canteen as BBMP has decided to roll out Ragi balls, a traditional food largely consumed in south Karnataka, through the canteens from August. Ragi balls have been a highlight of Appaji Canteens, launched by JD(S) in 2017. The decision to include this delicious and healthy dish to Indira Canteen will increase the popularity of the canteens which are being used by thousands everyday throughout the 198 wards of BBMP. BBMP special commissioner (finance) Manoj Rajan, who is in charge of Indira Canteens, said that the kitchens will get mudde-making machines developed by Mysore-based Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI). Ragi Mudde will be served for lunch and dinner at the canteens. Considering the feedback from customers, BBMP has introduced Payasam in Indira Canteens in February. “We want to make our canteens better by considering the suggestions by the customers. We have received suggestions for Ragi balls too earlier and have introduced them in eight canteens as a pilot project which turned out to be successful. That’s why we are expanding it to other canteens too,” he said. The decision is expected to further promote the government’s plan of spearheading the millet movement in the state. The officials believe that many people will benefit from the addition of Ragi mudde. Moreover, Ragi mudde will be a good option as it is healthy and benefits people with diabetes. August 2018 39

Looking back at the oeuvre of iconic lensman Jitendra Arya Anantha Narayanan K

Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi - a candid moment in 1953

If shaping the analog photograph relied on a play with luminance and silver, then Jitendra Arya was a master of this art. This iconic photographer has created magic with light and paper. Paying tribute to Arya, the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore, is hosting the exhibition, ‘Light Works’, as a journey of excavations into his photography, whose subjects, most often, were those whose lives were marked by fame and eminence. His subjects became his collaborators and he in turn immortalised them as images of posterity. With the display of over 300 selected works of Arya, NGMA provides a glimpse into his vintage prints that shed light onto the photographic magic before the advent of ‘digital backlot’. ‘Light Works’ is on display at NGMA Bangalore, 49 Palace Road, till August 21.

T

he National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore, is currently hosting ‘Light Works’ – a retrospective of celebrated photographer Jitendra Arya’s works, to provide a glimpse into his vintage prints from the restored archives of Jitendra Arya Foundation. The exhibition, curated by photo historian, professor, and filmmaker Sabeena Gadihoke, puts on display around 300 plus works which have been selected by the curator and Arya’s son, Kavi Arya, after sifting for three years through around

7000 negatives from the photographer’s collection. The photographs, emerged from the creative synergy between technique and Arya’s imagination, take you through the rarely told history of Hindi cinema and the life of actors. There was a time when getting photographed by Jitendra Arya was considered an honour. Interestingly, a major chunk of Arya’s photographic subjects was from the cream of the society including film stars, politicians, artists, writers etc. His camera has absorbed even

the lives of several people of fame and eminence like Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson, Bertrand Russell, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, Antony Edne, Gayatri Devi among others. Arya published many photo features on artists, musicians and dancers in the Illustrated Weekly of India that was preferred by photographers because of its superior photogravure printing. Arya’s photos have been featured on 330 Femina covers and he played a pivotal role in conferring stardom on unknown women. “When he started shooting for Filmfare in 1959, he was making the unknown woman a star on the cover,” says Gadihoke. Besides photographs, the exhibition also showcases letters from significant people from across the world like Khushwant Singh, Satyajit Ray, actress Nutan and translights of the portraits of Mala Sinha, Smita Patil, Nirupa Roy, Waheeda Rahman etc. Arya didn’t merely chronicle famous people and their lives. He cleverly and beautifully played with light, shadow, gesture, pose, mood, angle, and tone to create enduring portraits. The way Arya employed light in his images also made it stand out, which in fact, makes the name ‘Light Works’ apt for the exhibition. According to Gadihoke, Arya was a master of light and was comfortable with both artificial as well as natural light. In later years, he preferred the latter and even broke down the walls in his studiocum-apartment in Colaba, Mumbai to let the light in. Arya, who passed away at the age of 80 in 2011, had access into the private life of the Nehru family. The exhibition presents some of the photographs of Jawaharlal Nehru spending time with his grandchildren Sanjay and Rajiv during

a family outing. Arya has a collection of the photos of Nehru, young Indira Gandhi, their family pictures etc. While he shot Nehru extensively throughout his career, he photographed only four formal portraits of the Prime Minister. The one that he felt best represented his subject was taken in a sitting that lasted less than three minutes. He was also a master of candid photography, as illustrated by his pictures of Nutan playing with her dogs and Dev Anand enjoying breakfast with his wife Kalpana Kartik and cuddling his son Sunil. Arya created ‘candid moments’ from their lives at work and play and sculpted their stardom through his camera. A section of the NGMA exhibition is an ode to romance as it features candid shots of famous couples such as Prem Nath and Bina Rai on their honeymoon, Ashok Kumar and his wife taking a stroll on the streets of

London and Raj Kapoor and Nargis posing playfully on Kensington Street. For Arya, the facial contours of a person provided access to the landscape of the mind. A good portrait for him had to hold the viewer’s attention and to this end, he excluded all distracting elements from his frames. He skilfully fashioned soft light and shadow to sculpt the faces of his subjects in studio but he liked best to work with natural light. The exhibition also showcases a number of portraits of various personalities taken by Jitendra Arya. He shot into the international limelight with his portrait of Ava Gardner on the sets of John Ford’s Mogambo (1953), starring Clarke Gable and Grace Kelly. “Arya was roaming around the sets looking despondent because he hadn’t got any interesting pics. That’s when Gardner called him and said she would

give him one. She asked him to go up on a tower, took off her bathing robe and got under the shower. These pics made it to Life magazine in 1953. ‘Light Works’ is on display at NGMA Bengaluru, 49 Palace Road, till August 21. After Bangalore, the exhibition will travel to NGMA Delhi and then London.

The carvings of creepers growing around his arms and legs and insects crawling over him when he stood there in peace illustrate the same. The passage to the statue is immensely serene and will calm down jittery nerves in a moment.

through mobile phone. These features will soon become part of the BMTC’s mobile app. The decision has been taken in a recent meeting between the BMTC, IT companies, the Transport Department and the traffic police in Bellandur. Initially, the idea that is still in the concept stage will be tried in one or two routes and later will be made available for the air-conditioned buses in BMTC’s fleet, including the Vayu Vajra airport buses. Chennabasava, Board Secretary, BMTC has said that the idea of pre-booking a seat is expected to provide more comfort for passengers and draw in more riders. “Once these online facilities are

introduced, journeys will be more comfortable for people. People won’t prefer a bus when they have the fear that they will end up standing for a long time. If we can provide a practical solution to this issue, people would prefer travelling in buses,” he said. V Ponnuraj, Managing Director, BMTC, has said that the corporation is considering another feature to make the services passenger-friendly by enhancing last mile connectivity. “We are also considering the option of providing first and last-mile services, that is, from the bus stand to the doorstep. We have plans to involve cab aggregators and auto rickshaws in this,” he said.
