A

fter much hype surrounding the proposed loan waiver scheme, the maiden budget of the coalition government was presented by the Chief Minister, H D Kumaraswamy, on June 5. The budget, which he calls “a reflection of the coalition Dharma”, cemented the coalition’s common vision of the comprehensive development of Karnataka. The new budget is largely a ‘farmer and rural economy oriented one’ as it finally answered the prayers of thousands of farmers across the state by announcing the waiver of farm loans up to Rs. 2 Lakhs per farmer. The mega Rs.34000 Crore farm loan waiver scheme, which is the centrepiece of the new budget, includes loans borrowed from both cooperative and nationalised

Budget Supports Farmers and Rural Economy banks, as promised by the government earlier. “A big challenge of fulfilling the promise of farmers’ loan waiver is before our coalition Government. Our first priority is to mobilise the necessary resources to fulfil this. We have already started working towards collecting resources. I have started austerity measures from the Chief Minister’s Office itself so as to cut down unnecessary expenditure. I am confident that my ministerial colleagues will follow my footsteps,” said Kumaraswamy after announcing the waiver at Vidhana Soudha. The government has decided to waive all defaulted crop loans of farmers up to 31 Dec 2017 in the first stage. As an encouragement to the non-defaulting farmers, who repaid the loan within time, it has been decided to credit the repaid loan amount or Rs 25000 whichever is less. Kumaraswamy said that to facilitate the farmers to avail new loans action will be taken by the government to issue clearance certificate by waiving the arrears from the defaulting account. Rs 6500 Crores is earmarked in the budget for this purpose. With the waiver scheme imposing a huge burden on the exchequer, the CM also announced proposals to mop up additional resources,

including increase in the rate of tax on petrol by Rs. 1.14 per litre and diesel by Rs. 1.12 per litre by upping it from the existing 30% to 32% and diesel from 19% to 21%. Keeping in view the need to augment resources for the welfare needs of the state, the budget proposes to increase the additional excise duty on Indian-made liquor by 4 per cent across the board on all 18 slabs. The taxation on consumption of electricity has also been increased from 6% to 9% making it 20 paise per unit. The state has also set a revenue target of Rs 18,750 Crores for the Excise Department for the 2018-19 fiscal. “Our desire is to sow new dreams and make them a reality in rural Karnataka, and to spring new spirit among youth, bring solace to farmers & relief to women. The main aim of the coalition government is to continue all pro-people programmes and schemes of the previous government by giving further impetus,” said Kumaraswamy. Besides the waiver of farm loans, maternity benefit for women belonging to BPL families, measures for adoption of Israel method of farming, steps to boost animal husbandry and allied activities, creation of more jobs, and universal health policy (popularly called

Arogya Karnataka) etc are other topics that secured a spot in the budget proposals.

Continue Programmes of Previous Budget Kumaraswamy has said that the previous government had formulated and successfully implemented several propeople and the coalition government acknowledges the same by continuing all the programmes announced in the previous budget presented on 16th February 2018. Therefore, projects like “Anna Bhagya” scheme, implemented by distributing food grains to 3.85 Crore people below poverty line free of cost, “Kshira Bhagya” scheme implemented with the objective of eradicating malnutrition of school children by providing hot milk 5 days a week free of cost, “Krishi Bhagya” scheme formulated for the improvement of dry land farming among several others will be continued.

Major New Schemes of 2018-19 The budget proposes a slew of new schemes in all sector with an aim to promote comprehensive development. ‘Compete with China’ Scheme: The budget has proposed to establish a programme mission unit

to promote domestic manufacturing and reduce imports of Chinese goods. Spare parts will be manufactured at the village level, assembled at the taluk level and malls will be opened to market these goods. It proposes the construction of plug and play industrial sheds. To check the imports of LED lights, a manufacturing industry of household LED lights will be developed in Chitradurga district. The budget also proposes to develop Hassan district as bathroom floor tiles and sanitary goods manufacturing district countering Chinese dominance. Israel-Model Irrigation: The CM said that the Israel model of irrigation system, which he studied during his visit to Israel last year, would protect the crops of farmers and make their life better. “I provide Rs.150 Crores in the first stage for providing Israel model irrigation facility in 5,000 hectares of dry land each in Kolar, Chitradurga, Koppala and Gadag districts. Encouraging Electric Vehicles: Close to the heels of it EV policy the budget proposes 100 charging units set up at cost of Rs.4 Crores to encourage electric vehicles. Also, there is a proposal of a direct subsidy of Rs.100 Crores to the cash-strapped Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). To establish a hassle-free easy transport system at affordable rates, an Integrated Road Transport Authority for Bengaluru city will be established and headed by the Chief Minister. It will formulate a comprehensive working and action plan by coordinating with BMRCL, BMTC, BDA,

BBMP, and other agencies. Boost for Tourist Sector: The budget announced packages to boost the tourism potential of the State. The tourism department will focus on Belur, Hampi, Vijayapura by introducing two-year diplomas for tour guides to help tourists in various languages. A sum of Rs.20 Crores will be allotted to local government bodies to maintain the environment in the three places. In order to create employment opportunity in the hospitality area in the tourism sector, it is proposed to impart training in skill development, tourist guide training programme and tourist taxi-drivers refresher courses. ‘Mathrushri Scheme’ for Pregnant Women The Chief Minister announced a scheme, named ‘Mathrushri’, to transfer money directly to the bank accounts of pregnant women. In this new scheme, Rs.1000 per month is being directly transferred to the Aadhaar linked bank account of pregnant women of BPL families for three months

prior to the delivery and three months for the lactating mother. This amount will be increased in the next five years in a phased manner. This scheme is applicable only for the first two children of the mother. An amount of Rs.350 Crores is earmarked for this scheme. The scheme will be implemented from 1st November 2018. Approval for Namma Metro Phase 3 Another salient feature of the budget is the approval of the phase 3 of the Bengaluru metro. The Phase 3 will extend the phase 2 network by 75 km and Rs.15825 Crores will be spent on six elevated corridors. The announcement of elevated corridors in the previous government had led to widespread protests in the city. Bharath Solar District: Kalaburagi district will be developed as Bharath Solar District. The budget proposes an Alternative Packing Technology Development Institute at a cost of Rs.5 Crores to develop packing technology using biodegradable material other than plastic. The institute will also impart training for the same. This comes in the wake of the complete ban on production and sale of certain types of plastic in the State. A science centre is to be set up in the name of H. Narasimhaiah, rationalist and science teacher, at Gauribidanur. The late Mr. Narasimhaiah was a well-known crusader against superstitious beliefs.

Loan up to a maximum of Rs.10 lakh will be provided under this scheme for self-help groups on cluster model or individually. The budget also proposes to extend the Disha scheme to impart training to probable entrepreneurs in all the districts of Karnataka during 2018-19 and provide benefits of this scheme to 1 lakh people through a grant of Rs.2 crore.

Giving Impetus to Comprehensive Development The Bhruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) gives prime focus on the Comprehensive Development of the city, welfare of its citizens and safety of women. “We propose to have something for everybody, especially for the poorer sections in the city. With the support of the state government, the BBMP will address all the problems in the city and has several thrust areas including conservation of environment and rain water harvesting, civic health, and sanitation etc. The fiscal health of the corporation has improved, and many projects undertaken last year are about to see fruition soon,” says R Sampath Raj, Mayor, BBMP.

R Sampath Raj Mayor, BBMP Could you talk about various initiatives taken this year for the development of the city? BBMP has a slew of initiatives for the development of the city and all sections of society. This year’s budget itself stick to support this motive with people-friendly and progressive projects. BBMP gives prime focus on the welfare of citizens and safety of women. It proposes to have something for everybody, especially for the poorer sections in the city including

Pourakarmikas, transgenders, slumdwellers, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and minority communities. We have taken up the preparatory works for the comprehensive development of Bangalore city, giving impetus to solve various problems in the city. With the support of the state government, the BBMP will address all the problems in the city and has several thrust areas including conservation of environment

and water, rain water harvesting, civic health, sanitation etc. It also focuses on protecting the cultural heritage of the city, welfare, health and education and completion of ongoing public works. Separate plans have been made for welfare programmes for the differentlyabled, such as providing tricycles, and financial assistance for self-employment, among other initiatives. There are proposals for the establishment of dialysis centres at various parts in the city for benefit of poor patients. BBMP is spending around half of the total amount of the budget on maintenance and development works. The fiscal health of the corporation has improved, and many projects undertaken last year are about to see fruition soon. Could you talk about the latest updates on Indira Canteens? Setting up of Indira Canteens in all 198 civic wards is one of the flagship programmes to provide healthy and subsidised food for the people. The

canteens play a prime role in fulfilling the government’s aim to make Karnataka hunger-free. The canteens are very popular in the city and thousands of people now rely on them. As of now 176 wards have Indira Canteens which are fully operational. Recently BBMP has opened mobile canteens also at various places where a fixed outlet was not possible. Around 20 mobile Indira Canteens has been launched and they are parked near public parks and prime locations of civic wards serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner at cheap rates. The mobile vans are part of the government’s efforts to ensure that all 198 centres have operational canteens. We are planning to open generic medicine stores, Janoushadha Centres, in all Indira Canteens and the project is on the anvil. Environmental pollution is one of the major issues Bangalore city is facing now. Could you talk about the various initiatives to address this? BBMP has taken several initiatives to address the issue of aggravating pollution. Recently, Bengaluru city has joined London to co-chair the C-40 Air Quality Network to the fight against climate change and improve the quality of the air in the city. We also propose to use effective techniques of afforestation and environment management to enhance the greenery of the city. Rs.1 Crore has been allotted to 200 samplings with tree guards in each ward. BBMP also proposes to raise and maintain 2 Lakhs saplings in 5 nurseries of Palike this year and the project is actively progressing. Necessary actions will be taken against encroachments on lake beds and projects are on to rejuvenate 40 lakes. Rs.45.26 Crores has been allocated for protecting the environment and greenery. We are also setting up tree parks at various parts of the city and taking all the necessary steps to keep the Garden City’s greenery. Waste management is another issue in the city with new dumping yards coming up every other day. Could you talk about the policies taken by BBMP to tackle the issue? Scientific disposal of dry and wet waste generated every day is a huge challenge

Waste segregation basically means keeping wet, dry, and sanitary/reject waste separately, so that dry can be recycled, wet waste can be composted, and sanitary waste can be incinerated. We have achieved around 45% in waste segregating at the source by using separate bins. This year the target is to make it 65%. BBMP has around 16000 pourakarmikas all around the city and we are planning to raise the number by 4000 more. BBMP has initiated various campaigns on waste management to convince people to reduce the use of non-recyclable plastic and promote using recyclable cotton and jute bags. Penalties up to Rs.5 Lakhs will be levied from those who dump garbage in storm water drains and lake areas. BBMP has given proper guidelines to the citizens regarding waste management. We urge people to provide their support to make the city clean and garbage free by following these guidelines.

Could you talk about your visions and priorities for the city? Any specific targets you wish to achieve during your term? Bengaluru is the Silicon Valley of India and the city is growing at a fast pace. BBMP aims to make the city at par with many international cities by improving the infrastructure, protection environment and enhancing citizen services. My priority will be to effectively implement all the projects taken up by the Palike within the stipulated time for the comprehensive development of the city. Rain water harvesting, and waste management are other policies I would like to take forward. The traffic congestion is a great concern as the number of vehicles is on the rise each day. We are taking strict action against illegal constructions and parking. We are also seizing illegal shops to decongest the city. BBMP has plans for constructing more multi-level parking centres at various spots.

Energising the Power Supply Sector

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), responsible for power distribution in 8 districts, has been ensuring consumer satisfaction and continuous profit in business through a slew of initiatives and policies over these years. “‘Consumers come first’ and striving to be the best utility for consumer satisfaction in the entire South Asia was the major factor for introducing lot of consumers initiatives,” says P Rajendra Cholan, IAS – MD, BESCOM. A few excerpts from his interview with Advantage Karnataka.

The outcome is quite encouraging and turning to be a very handy tool.

P Rajendra Cholan Managing Director, BESCOM BESCOM is part of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the creation of charging infrastructure in Bangalore and the company has already set up a public charging point. How is the response so far? What are the plans to boost the implementation of the EV policy? Government of Karnataka has released the Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2017 with a vision to make Karnataka a preferred investment destination for manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (EVs). BESCOM has taken several initiatives to support EV Policy. Two Electric Charging Stations (DC Fast Charger) and one AC charging station have been already installed at Corporate Office and commissioned successfully. 5 Electric Vehicles are arranged for the use of officers working at Corporate Office, KERC & Energy Department to promote use of Electric Vehicles. It is also planned to provide 5 Electric Vehicles for each Of BESCOM Circles along with setting up of Electric Charging Stations. Consequent to the issue of clarification on charging infrastructure for EVs with reference to the provisions of Electricity Act 2003, BESCOM is well prepared to arrange Power Supply to the Charging Stations likely to be established by third parties for the Electric Vehicles. The Grid Connected Solar Rooftop PV system is getting much popular among public. What are the initiatives by BESCOM to promote this and improve the services? BESCOM is the first distribution company, which is in the process of

implementation of the Rooftop project. The following are the initiative taken by BESCOM for promotion and improve the services: • Online application with payment gateway facility, Guidelines of consumers and BESCOM officers and other related forms and format hosted in BESCOM website. • Formation of dedicated Helpdesk at Corporate office, BESCOM for queries / clarification related to SRTPV 080-22340816. • Formation of centralised billing centre at Corporate office for payment of net metered or gross metered energy bills to the SRTPV generators. • Empanelment of grid tied inverters and facilitators. • Active participation and advertising in the social media such as Exhibitions, Radio Jingles, Workshops, stall, Vidhyut Gagritha Yojana- educating school children regarding energy saving and benefits of Rooftop solar, Advertisement at Major Railway station through DDIS (Dual Display Infotainment system) etc. BESCOM is entrusted with the mission of ensuring absolute consumer satisfaction and continuous profit in business. Could you share the details of recent major achievements? As per Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) norms, BESCOM is allowed annual revenue requirement,

which represents the amount of money a utility must collect to cover its costs and make a reasonable profit. The allowed Rate of Equity (RoE) @15.5% drives a utility’s profitability. For FY19, KERC has approved Rs.179.13 Crores as the RoE. A few critical factors have been identified that help in revenue mobilisation and in turn deliver profit improvement. By improving each of these critical factors by as little as 1%, an increase is seen in our profits. The factors for improving profit include preventing the lost consumers from moving away of BESCOM grid, introduction of Special Incentive Scheme to woo back HT consumers, improving the metered sales, better and fast service to consumers through Fast Track New Connection, real time billing of Open Access consumers etc. Our recent achievements include the opening of 217 24/7 - Any Time Payment (ATP) Counters across BESCOM. Around 20Lakh consumers are making use of this facility. Long pending issue of Nonaligned billing complaint has been addressed by replacing the existing spot bill on pre-printed paper by complete system printed spot bill through Spot Billing Device (SBD). To ensure continuous profit in business, the BESCOM has designed and implemented the Financial Management Framework Model from 26.7.2017 onwards, Collection Target is inclusive of net revenue demand plus 10 per cent of clear recoverable arrears plus 5 per cent of arrears of long disconnected installations.

How do you assess the growth Karnataka’s power generation and distribution systems? What are the challenges ahead? From last year, the nonconventional energy generation has raised considerably, mainly after Pavagada solar generation plant & other small capacity solar generation units were commissioned. Presently the NCEP’s generation is about 40% of state total generation. Further, recently in conventional energy generation, the state owned thermal power station YTPS is added with generation capacity of 800 MW to the grid. Presently average consumption of BESCOM in working days around 95 mu, in which BMAZ consumes around 55 mu and Other two zones namely BRAZ & CTAZ average consumption is 23 mu & 17 mu respectively. For the past one year, generation capacity has increased considerably, hence surplus generation of power is available. In distribution for arranging power supply the main constraints are due to network constraints of transmission lines which are dealt by KPTCL. What are the initiatives by BESCOM to improve customer relations? Also, could you talk about various online services that make BESCOM more consumer-friendly? The initiatives by BESCOM to improve Customer Relations are Integrated Public Grievance Redressal System and well established 24x7 Helpline1912 to facilitate consumers to register their complaints. There are 24x7 SMS facility-58888 and well-customised PGRS application including of Escalation

Matrix, Technical Dash Board and SMS Gateway Facility. Complaints have been categorised based on nature of problem and time duration has been fixed as per KERC SoP (A to N category). Implementation of Social Media (Face Book & Twitter) in another initiative. Customer Interaction Meetings are being conducted every month on third Saturday in all the Subdivisions. Usage of “BESCOM MITRA” (Mobile App), “Savi Kirana” Fast Track New Connection services (FTNC) for availing power supply up to 7.5KW and “Surya Raitha”, a project for Agricultural Consumers are other major initiatives. Could you talk about the latest updates on BESCOM’s social responsibility scheme Ganga Kalyana? How successful is the scheme in helping the farmers? Could you share your vision and priorities for BESCOM during your term? ‘Consumers come first’ and striving to be the best utility for consumer satisfaction in the entire South Asia was the major factor for introducing lot of consumers initiatives like the online services and mobile app. My vision is to take forward the same and strengthen services. The following are some of the major achievements during my term. To ensure Fast & Transparent way of Providing New Connection, Load Additional, Load Reduction, Name Change & Tariff Change services within 24 hours instead of earlier 40 days have been introduced. For all the applications where the load requirement is less than 7.5 kW of Load (who are nearly 70 to 80 % of consumers in BESCOM) within 24 hours service will be given. The same is under plan for implementing it up to 25 kW as deemed connection serviced once the application is registered online. BESCOM is the first Distribution Utility in India to install EV Charging Station for the use of General Public and hiring EV the use of officers. It is also proposed to hire EV cars for Executive Engineer and above cadre. It is proposed to install 11 more charging stations in various offices of BESCOM for the use of General Public. The long pending project of Automating the Distribution Network in BESCOM Bangalore jurisdiction is rolled out successfully. With this the interruption location time will be minimised and only the portion of the interrupted location will be affected, and the other areas of the feeder will be provided with power supply with Auto Recloser & Sectionalisers. olonial Clubs are undoubtedly the last remnants of British era in India and most of them still stand as a treasure hallmarking the erstwhile British cantonments. The Garden City, Bangalore, too wears such a hallmark of those times when the colonial masters tried to create a little bit of England in the heart of the city. It is none other than the Bangalore Club, painted in powder blue and surrounded by sprawling lawns and beautifully manicured bushes. With its white arched windows, colonnaded verandas and twin pillared portico, the Club, which was a

colonial residency bungalow once, stands as a blend of colonial and contemporary Bangalore, withstanding the test of time over 150 years. Established in 1863 in the heart of Richmond town by some officers of the United Services as an informal meeting place, the Bangalore Club (formerly Bangalore United Service Club) was formally announced as a Club in 1868, to cater to the officers only. Later, in the early 1900s, it was opened to Indians, making Chamarajendra Wodeyar X, Maharaja of Mysore, the first Indian to be invited in 1901. Following the First Word War, the Club has amended its rules to include Indian officers as a tribute to their bravery in the war and Col. Des Raj Urs became the first to be formally elected in 1918. In 1946 the Club was opened to civilians and became Bangalore Club.

amalgamation of the old and new, of history and modernity. The Club’s stately centre building reflects both the 19th century notions of British empire and the grandeur of 21st century with efficiency and vitality. The Lounge in the Club House maintains its colonial façade and boasts of ancient hunting trophies, war souvenirs. Its walls are decorated with animal horns and sepia-toned pictures. A glass-caged Cheetah at the centre of the lounge is a cynosure of eyes. A corner of the room is dedicated to Winston Churchill who was a once an illustrious member of the Club. As a tribute to the long association with the Wodeyars of Mysore, the dress lounge of

the Club has been refurbished and turned into a formal lounge called the Mysore Room. It bears the insignia of the court of Mysore, ‘Ganda Berunda’ or double-headed eagle. The inlay works, wood panels, cladding on the walls, engraved furniture etc resembles the Mysore Palace. The walls of the room are decorated with the photos of the famous Mysore Dassera celebrations and portraits of Mysore royal family. The Brigadier Hall Annexe, which was constructed in 1907 with sunken wooden floor,

was where royal dances were held. A swimming pool, which was established in 1938, is one of the oldest in the country. Presently, this pool has temperature regulators for the convenience of the members. The Club archives keeps the Minutes of Meetings that date back to 1897 offering valuable insights into the spirit of the times, history of the Club rules and their evolution through ages. The administrative systems of the Club are completely modernised and employ the maximum use of electronic

software driven services to support efficiency, reduce costs and deliver information and services to the members in a timely manner. The Club carefully protects and cultivates a garden that contains many old and precarious representatives of Bangalore’s natural heritage. It is one of the largest private green spaces in the city. Despite being an ancient building, the Club works to create as low an eco-footprint as possible. It has got a modern sewage treatment plant which treats 60000 litres

Burma Bell The Oval Lawn in front of the main building houses the historic Burma Bell which was once belonged to the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon, Burma. In the war of 1945, a bomb was accidently dropped on the Pagoda dislodging the 2500-yearold temple bell which fell 80 stone steps. The Buddhist Monks took this incident a bad omen and refused to reinstate the bell into the temple and left it in its forlorn state. It was later taken by the British soldiers and shipped it to Madras Headquarters. It was in August 1945, the Bell reached Bangalore Club when Brigadier RCR Hill, the longest serving president of the Club brought it from Madras. Now, the members of the Club ring the bell on Independence and Republic Days. The stone plaque beside it tells the story of Brigadier

During the course of the year, the Club has planned a number of programmes to celebrate its 150-year history. To mark its sesquicentennial, the Club will bring out a book. The book is expected to be launched in October in conjunction with Services Day to honour the armed forces. The Club also has plans to bring out a commemorative stamp to be released by the Indian postal service. The Club’s general body has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for projects like tree planting, playing facilities for children in government schools, wildlife initiatives as well as some employee initiatives. While boasting of its colonial heritage, Bangalore Club remains interwoven with the city and its culture through a symbiotic relationship instead of staying in isolation. he Bosch Group, the leading global technology and services company, will invest Rs.1700 Crores in India over the next three years to meet the rising demand in the Indian market and expand its strong role in our global network, said Bosch Group Chairman and Chief Executive Dr Volkmar Denner during his visit to Bangalore. “The Bosch Group sees strong signs of recovery in the Indian market and forecasts a positive development over the mid-term The Indian economy is on the rise again and holds tremendous potential”, said Dr Denner. In 2017, Bosch posted strong doubledigit growth as sales went up of 15.4 percent to 2.2 billion euros. With a projected 7.7 percent GDP-growth for the Indian economy in 2018 and a similar level for the coming years, Bosch expects to continue with its momentum. Main contributors are the development of the local automotive industry, which holds opportunities for Diesel technology, electromobility and connected mobility as well as the government initiatives for connected manufacturing and connected cities. “A major share of Rs.1700 Crores will be used to expand Bosch’s smart campus in Adugodi and modernise manufacturing facilities in the country,” added Dr Denner. Breakthrough in Diesel technology Volkmar Denner sees improving the quality of life and contributing to eco- and climate-friendliness at the top of Bosch’s agenda: “Our ‘Invented for life’ ethos is

our motivation for developing the best possible technologies for environmental protection. We want to help keep people mobile, while improving air quality.” To make low emissions traffic reality, the company is making heavy investments – both in making electromobility a market success and in enhancing the combustion engine. Bosch engineers have succeeded in getting NOx emissions massively down. On average, test vehicles equipped with the enhanced technology already emit not more than 13 milligrams of NOx per kilometre during road tests according to the new European RDE standard. “There’s a future for diesel. It will remain integral to tomorrow’s mobility solutions,” the Bosch CEO said. Connected Mobility Solutions drives growth Another field of growth in India’s thriving automotive industry is the rising demand for connected mobility. Bosch continues to drive forward its transformation into a provider of mobility services. The company recently established a Connected Mobility Solutions division to develop and sell digital mobility services. “Connectivity will fundamentally change how we get from A to B, and in the process, it will help to solve today’s traffic problems. We are using it to realize our vision of emissions-free, stress-free, and accident-free mobility,” said Volkmar Denner. In India, the new business division will work to develop a global telematics

platform that will be enabled and operated by local engineering talent. This platform will help Bosch to better serve its customer base in India with effective solutions designed for effective mobility. The key offerings will include vehicle sharing, ridesharing, and connectivity-based services for car drivers. Bosch Centre for Artificial Intelligence Around 18,000 out of Bosch’s 31,000 associates in India work in research and development (R&D). India also plays a significant role when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI). “Most of the products in the future will be linked to artificial intelligence. These products will either possess that intelligence themselves, or AI will play a key role in their development or manufacture,” said Mr. Denner. In 2017, the company invested 300 million euros into its Bosch Centre for Artificial intelligence (BCAI) across three continents – one of the main locations being in Bengaluru- next to centres in Sunnyvale, U.S. and Renningen, Germany. Additionally, Bosch in India has also partnered with IIT-Madras and set up a Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT- M with a fund of 4 crore per year for 5 years. in 2013, Sri Sri Sri Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, who is heading the Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana as its 72nd pontiff, is taking forward the Math’s activities and Mahaguruji’s visions. Located in Nagamangala Taluk, Mandya District, about 100 Kms from Bengaluru to its West, this ancient monastery is engulfed with the divine resonance and vibration. Apart from spreading the essence of spiritualism to establish universal brotherhood and global peace, the Math sets out to uplift society through creating access, for the rural community, to Education and Health Care, the two most pressing needs.

Expanding the Vistas of Education Education is the manifestation of divine perfection already existing in man and the Math believes that it is the ideal way to make people rise from the great slumber of ignorance. Often Education is considered as a “Sanjeevini”. It is viewed as an agent of social, economic, and political development. Realising the need, the Mahaguruji has initiated Sri Adichunchanagiri Shikshana Trust (R.) with the main motto of imparting quality

education. In fact, Akshara (Education) is one among the ‘8As’ focused by Mahaguruji. As of 2017, the Math has established more than four hundred and thirty recognised and highly regarded educational institutions, where in more than one lakh thirty thousand students are quenching their thirst of knowledge; a significant number are from rural areas. Several Schools are established in economically backward areas, to enable under privileged masses to get education, both in Kannada and English Medium. This has made the people to liberate themselves from the clutches of Ignorance and Poverty. These Institutions are supported with all the needed infrastructural facilities. The Math has taken necessary steps scrupulously to equip class rooms with Computers, Charts, Maps, Overhead Projectors, LCD Projectors, Telescopes, and other practical related equipment, for the inculcation of rational thinking and enabling them to face the challenges in the world of Science and Technology. Here, Prayer, Meditation, Yoga, Discourses are made compulsory, to imbibe the spirituality, in the young minds. Orphanages With a view to provide better life for the destitute children, the Math has started Orphanages at Sri Kshetra and Chunchankatte in Mysuru District. More than 3000 children are being given free education with all the facilities including food, accommodation, and clothing. In addition to formal education, children are taught different vocations, so that after leaving the school, they will be better equipped to face their future life. Free Hostel for Poor Students Having realised that establishment of schools and colleges by itself will not be sufficient enough for the rural children to pursue their studies; the Math has established Free Hostels throughout the State, both in rural and urban areas to facilitate poor children to pursue their studies without any hindrance. Schools for Physically & Visually Challenged At Archakarahalli, near Ramanagara, Balagangadharanatha Swamiji Blind Residential School was established. This institution is provided with modern infrastructural facilities to enable visually challenged children to rejoice the

Even after their formal method of education, they are placed in different branches of Math. There is a Blind School at Cumbum (Tamil Nadu). They are taught with music, re-canning, basket weaving, etc., so that, after their schooling, The Math also runs Dumb & Deaf Schools at Mysuru and Cumbum. Central and International Schools They are opened to keep Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in touch with cultural heritage of India, with all International standards facilities. life confidently on themselves. Professional Courses India’s vast pool of technical manpower has been its pride and is the foundation upon which national development has taken place. The Math has made to building up of technically skilled human resource through its many institutions. Adichunchanagiri Institute of Technology, Chikkamagaluru, Sri Jagadguru Chandrashekaranatha Swamiji Institute of Technology, Chickballapur, Sri Jagadguru Balagangadharanatha Swamiji Institute of Technology, Bengaluru are some of the engineering colleges. health to every individual’s door step. The Math has started Hospital at BG Nagara, Mandya District. In 1986, a 1250-Bed Hospital became a Teaching Hospital, for Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), a College of Nursing and a College of Pharmacy. The hospital renders service free of cost for admission, investigations, treatments in the form of drugs and surgeries. Inpatients are provided free accommodation, investigations, treatment, and food. People from all over the state are benefited by the services provided by the Math. The hospital has specially trained health volunteers. They visit villages every day, educate, guide the patients, and bring suffering patients to the hospital in the ambulance and get necessary consultation, investigation, treatment at free of cost and get them back to their places. The health workers particularly focus on healthcare of pregnant women, children, and people with cataract blindness. Patients are also referred from Medical Officers in nearby Public Health Centres. The hospitals conduct special Eye Camps every week wherein hospitals provide cataract free intraocular lens. About 800 to 1000 cataract surgeries are done every month. The Math, through Hospitals organises many camps like, Jaipur Foot Donation Camp, Wheel Chair Donation Camp, Yashaswini Health Scheme for farmers, Free Eye Camp, Free Blood Donation Camp, Cancer Detection Camp, Free Cleft Lip and Palate Plastic Surgery Camp, Village Camps, besides implementing National Health Programmes like Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, AIDS Prevention Programme, etc. Doctors and Paramedical staff visit the villages periodically in the radius of 50 Kms from the hospital for the detection and remedy of health problems. Annually, a team of 25 Medical Experts from United States of America comprising Plastic Surgeons, Paediatrics, Dentists, and Anaesthesiologists would visit AIMS Hospital and conduct free mega Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Surgery Camp, along with AIMS faculty. In the Camp, hundreds of patients are treated. Mahaguruji, being present personally would enquire and inspect the arrangements made and witnessed the surgeries in-person. BGS-Apollo Hospital in Mysuru is treating the patients with the advanced equipment in specialised areas. BGS-Global Hospital is established in Bengaluru. The Math runs hospitals at other places like Ramanagara and Mandya with Primary Health Care Centres at several places. The Math has established ‘Ayurvedic College’ at Bengaluru for traditional method of healing. Nature Cure and Yoga are an integral part of an Ayurvedic treatment, being given to the needy at affordable prices.

BMRCL rolls out Six-Car Metro Trains

roviding great relief for passengers travelling in jampacked metro coaches on the Purple Line, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has rolled out its much-awaited six-car Metro coach. Chief Minister, HD Kumaraswamy, has flagged off the train at Byappanahalli metro station in the presence of Deputy CM G Parameshwara and Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Afffairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, Industries Minister, KJ George, Chief Secretary, Ratna Prabha, Mayor, R Sampath Raj, etc. The Chief Minister and other dignitaries have also travelled in the new six-coach train till Kempegowda Majestic Metro station. The new six car train, with one coach reserved for women, will run along the Purple Line (Byappanahalli - Mysuru Road) and to reduce the peak hour rush. The Purple line has been chosen since it is busier than the Green Line. With the newly added three coaches, the train will now be able to carry 1950 passengers, almost double the existing capacity of 975. The three intermediate coaches have been delivered by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)

already in February and BMRCL recently obtained safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) and railway board following several trial runs. The second batch of three cars is expected to be delivered by BEML next month. In March last year, BEML has won the Rs. 1421-crore order to supply 150 sets of intermediate cars to expand the existing three-car trains. BMRCL will convert all three car trains to six by the end of next year. There are currently 50 three-car trains running on both lines daily. A S Shankar, Executive Director, Operations and Maintenance, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), has said that there will be three trips run during morning peak hour from the Mysuru Road end towards the Eastern side and two trips in the evening from the Baiyapanahalli end to the Western side. Recently, BMRCL has marked one year of the completion of Phase 1 with a registered ridership of over 12 crore, and an average ridership of 3.3 lakh every day on the 42km network and is expected to touch 5 lakh this year. he art-lovers in the city has witnessed a different but enthusiastic exhibition recently when the city cops decided to wield paintbrush and cameras instead of lathy and shield for a change. The Reves Art Gallery has hosted an exhibition in association with the Karnataka Police to reveal the artistic side of the police personnel. The four-day exhibition, at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, has showcased work of arts and photography by the personnel. Neelamani N. Raju, Karnataka Director-General and InspectorGeneral of Police, who inaugurated the event, has said that exhibition helped bring out the human side of police personnel. “It is wonderful to see police personnel take time to pursue their talent and hobbies while they fulfil their duties,” she said. Around 70 works of art by 19 participants, including IPS officers such as Anoop A. Shetty (SP, Koppal), Vartika Katiyar (DCP-CAR, Bengaluru), Nisha James (Commandant, Indian Reserve Battalion, Munirabad), and retired DGP Jija Hari Singh, are on display. The man behind the art show, Bhaskar Rao, ADGP, KSRP, has said “They should have been artists instead of being policemen. Our curated list of products is around 500+ as of now and we keep adding to this list every week / month (on our own accord and some based on feedback and suggestions from our customers). The stress on the word curation is essential, since this is what sets us apart and even up to today all the products are handpicked and curated personally by both of us. We don’t just sell everything on Healthy Buddha, we have laid down some of our principles in product addition, for example no maida (our pastas, spaghetti, biscuits, bakery section is maida-free), cold pressed oils only, unpolished / semipolished pulses, milk / ghee from desi cows, etc. How organic are your products? What makes them unique? The biggest validation of the organic authenticity of our produce is when our customers tell us that the taste is similar to the one they had when they

were growing up (when all produce was by design organic) or that their families health and wellness has improved drastically and the visits to the doctors have reduced. Internally, this is through the Healthy Buddha standards we have established (which is more encompassing, rigorous, and stringent than the current regulations) of ensuring that all produce and farms are 100% organic and we hope it will become an industry norm in time to come. Out of the products you sell, which three are your favourites? This is very tricky question to answer since both of us pride on every product that is listed on the website and we abide by it wherein each product goes onto the table of both our families on a daily basis and we are particular about organic vegetables for the kids. Our product selection process varies from 3-10 weeks and almost every product has a story of its own from different regions and the best of farmers across the country.

In those days when the tag ‘organic vegetable’ meant expensive and a fancy trend, two friends, after 12 years of corporate life in India & abroad, ventured out to explore the scope in the sector. In early 2014, the duo decided to transform their idea into a business with an intention to enable the common man to lead a healthy lifestyle by having easy access to high quality authentic organic food at an affordable price. Meet Gautham PB & Anurag Dalmia, the founders of Healthy Buddha, an organic e-store based out of Bangalore, which supplies “farm fresh” organic vegetables and nonperishables like pulses and lentils to customers’ homes. Gautham and Anurag talk about their success story and more about Healthy Buddha. How much in addition does a family have to spend to go all-organic? What do you think about the affordability? The common misconception most of us have is that organic is exorbitantly expensive and that is partly due to the fact that we tend to look at one product (s) individually and do the comparison. On a side note, as long as, less than 1% of the total agro-products cultivated in the country is organic and the remaining being chemical laden, there is bound to be a price difference between the two. Coming back to the actual difference between organic and chemical laden, we have done various studies and found that for a family of four, the actual basket value would increase by approx. Rs 2500-3500 monthly (that’s about it, so think about it!!). Hence at a monthly basket level, the cost difference is around 30-40% than the conventional basket. ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’, they say. So, if customers are having an item of the super food list, they would want to know more about it. What

Hence as a consumer, one should know where the food is coming from, what’s going into it at every stage of the cycle, how it is grown, and more important, the impact and footprint the food consumed leaves behind. We are living in a limited natural resource environment and need to be very careful about our choices, especially when it comes to the most basic aspect of our living. Food chain and food mile is going to become very important and customers will soon be demanding this let alone ask questions about ethical, socioenvironmental impact, clean quality food which doesn’t become all consummating and that leaves nothing for the next generation. Else it’s not too far away that we will be eating from boxes and packets. How accessible are your farms to the customers? All the time! We do organise monthly visits to our farms and we especially encourage it along with kids, since they need to get out of the city and see where and how their food is grown and develop that connect. It’s very important that the families who get associated with Healthy Buddha, get to see the real heroes behind their food. The kind of

work, effort and hardships that go behind bringing the food on their table needs to be appreciated. Could you talk about the farmers you work with? A very important aspect where we are putting a lot of effort to build upon and which is the backbone of this business – is the supply side. Marrying the growing demand with produce availability well in advance in crucial for our success. This involves working with farmer and farmer groups at the grassroot level and helping some of them start from scratch. In Karnataka itself we have hand held 45-55 farmers turn to organic farming from scratch by providing them technical expertise at each stage of growing, financial assistance (seed financing, ultra-short-term borrowing) and more importantly a ready market to sell their produce at better than market rates. We are encouraging farmers in the vicinity to build informal groups so that they can cogrow, de-risk, leverage economies of scale and benefit collectively. Our vision is to build smaller and focused amul stories in each taluka.

KSIC, the proud inheritor of this royal legacy, has treasured it for over seven decades, has been producing 100% pure silk with pure gold zari. KSIC is manufacturing quality silk products of varied designs for end

KSIC is the only organisation in the country commanding the entire gamut of silk production right from reeling of cocoons to the weaving of pure silk fabric of various shades and designs, all under one roof. It is this mobility that is an underpinning to creating innovation. Diversity of talent through mobility opens opportunity for collaboration. There is a known fact that many people in these organisations suffer from something that is referenced as the “Four Year Syndrome”. Upon working for an organisation in Silicon Valley for four years, an employee becomes fully vested with their stock options. Upon such time, they can then leave their current employer and join another organisation. In effect, a talented employee shifts from one organisation to another every four years. This allows for fluidity in the relationships between people and spurs creativity and innovation, allowing individuals from various organisational backgrounds to come together and form new startups and develop new ideas. Indian Services industry is a major contributor to the Gross Domestic Product. Product/Service oriented organisations need to align their business strategies with innovation and define their objectives and work environment accordingly. Innovation in organizations is a mix of innovation critical for its continuing survival and growth. Such innovations must take place not only in product and process breakthrough’s but also in host of business, organisation and process-related areas that are critical for facilitating product and process

innovations. Key management processes of new product development; capital project appraisal and resource allocation need to be carefully redesigned making them conducive to the innovation process within the organisation. Taking these actions to support innovation within the firm will allow the organisations to successfully leverage their domain knowledge and to capture the valueadded activity market. Organisations that come to India for cost savings will stay on for the quality of people and ultimately invest in Next generation innovation. It’s time to capitalise on the country’s greatest international advantage: the ability to innovate for the world. India needs to accelerate in promoting high-tech startup and established equity incentive market within its local organisations. This reward system of both monetary compensation and stock compensation, combined with a successful stock market allow individuals to see rewards from working at various organisations, while helping their employers grown. Innovation is not created through lifetime employment. It is fostered through mobility and flexibility. Although the Indian Services Industry has not traditionally been considered an “Innovation-base”, it must move towards this goal if it must sustain itself in the long run. Service Providers should find opportunities to partner with Indian organisations for catering to the domestic market intrinsically. This can be mutually beneficial allowing Service Providers to gain the required expertise without spending resources in non-revenue activities. As a result, projects will be implemented as a consortium by bringing together the domain expertise of various groups and providing the best output. Innovation is driven in any organisation through a dream to differentiate and value ‘brilliance’ with ‘wow’. It is possible only by leaders who desire to build something exciting in new India as well globally - Let’s transform by Inventing ‘all new’ with a jumpstart and Making it in India.

Neelakurnji blooms take place only in Munnar and when it happens it is profuse, sprawling magically across the green mountains. The hillock gets a completely unique look and identity and the valleys look unrecognisable covered in these majestic flowers. The serene hills of Munnar in Kerala have always had a special place in the hearts of globetrotters around the world for their lush green meadows, silvery streams, cascading waterfalls, and misty paths. Although the plants are found in a sparse amount in other south Indian hill stations, Neelakurnji blooms take place only in Munnar and when it happens it is profuse, sprawling magically across the green mountains of Western Ghats. All through the offseason, the Neelakurinji plants are camouflaged into the thick vegetation of Munnar and go unnoticed. But during the bloom season, the Neelakurinji flowers take the centre stage in Munnar, turning the place ethereal.

Neelakurinji

parlance translates to the colour blue and Kurinji is the local name for the flower. It is a shrub found in the shola grasslands of Western Ghats of south India - the Nilgiri hills, Palani hills and the Eravikulam hills of Munnar. The flower falls in the genus kunthiana. It was first studied and described by German botanist Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck. The plant normally grows 30 to 60 cm high in normal conditions and up to 180 cm in congenial conditions. One can view the shorter variation (about 2 ft.) at higher spots and longer variations (about 5 to 8 ft.) are seen at lower spots. About 250 species belong to the genus Strobilanthes and nearly 46 are found in India. Most of these species show unusual flowering behaviour which range from one to 16 years. The flower found in Munnar has a blooming cycle of 12 years and the last time Neelakurinji bloomed in the hillock was in 2006. During the last blooming season, an estimate of around 10 Lakh tourists visited this place to marvel the beauty of Neelakurinji-filled Munnar, unleashing a visual extravaganza. In fact, the best time to visit Munnar is when the Neelakurinji blooms en masse. The event has a place in the calendars of botanists and nature lovers as it is like a secret glimpse into heaven, allowed only once every 12 years. Standing amidst the Neelakurinji, one is transported to a different dimension altogether. The bewitching beauty and rarity of Neelakurinji has inspired several Tamil and Malayalam poets. Most of them have depicted the flowers as a symbol of yearning, love, and happiness. In Kuruntokai, a Tamil classic poetic work and the second book in a Sangam literature anthology, Ettuthokai, the flowers are indirectly mentioned as an imagery in comparison of the blossoming with the eternal union of lovers.

There are several spots in Munnar to witness the enigmatic sight of Neelakurinji flowers. Kovilur, Kadavari, Vattavada, Rajamala and Eravikulam National Park are the must-see spots during the season. The grasslands at Top Station and Eravikulam National Park offer a spectacular view of the Neelakurinji blooms during the flowering season. Eravikulam is incidentally home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, hosting a majority of the remaining population of the species on the planet. The majestic mountain goat ambling down the hills that are enveloped in Neelakurinji is an extremely beautiful sight. The Neelakurinji Bloom 2018 is worth the wait and not to be missed as the flower will bloom again only after 12 years. A host of packages are now available for travellers and specialised tours and treks are organised to view this masterpiece of nature. Tour

Over the next four months, Munnar is expected to see 10 lakh visitors and most hotels will be fully occupied. Hence it is ideal to book your room and ride to not miss the Neelakurinji magic. Capt.D C Sekhar Executive director, AlphaMERS Could you talk about the birth of AlphaMERS and how successful it has been in achieving the mission? Initially, we set up revenues by providing services to oil industry. Seeing the crying need for river and lake clean-ups, we then embarked on this road map of innovation. We achieved significant success in our earliest attempts at innovation and then, there was no looking back. We designed the floavting barrier for river surface clean-up in 2015. We conducted a pilot test in 2016 followed by its commercial deployment in 2017. Since then, we have created several designs for various purposes, some of which include a floating barrier for security purposes to keep intruding boats away, a flood relief raft that won’t tear up or sink, a device to carry and drop anchor in middle of lakes without cranes. The list does not end here. We have also designed a device to convert wave energy to electricity in mid-2017 and tested said device in 2018. This has led to designs for a wave powered boat, which we are yet to prototype. A considerable amount of time is spent on brainstorming each solution, contemplating its efficiency and simplicity. Iterations of testing the prototypes lead to changes in design which subsequently leads to further testing. When it comes to innovating a solution, there is conceptualisation, and there is engineering. Our primary source

We faced several problems while designing, of course, but many are shelved by asking the simple question, “How does the human body execute this basic function?” AlphaMERS, however, has managed to do so. Our success today is not in terms of our top line, rather, it is in terms of IPRs, our organisational learning and the welloiled team that is ready to deal with new problems every day. We are modestly making profit since the beginning, with a healthy financial net worth. What is the future roadmap for AlphaMERS? What are the expansion plans and challenges ahead? We see our position getting very strong with each solution and patent filing. We shall continue to grow organically, developing solutions, prototyping, and proving it on the ground. Currently we do undertake deployment of what we create, but as our brand value invokes confidence, we intend to start monetising the IPRs and stick to the core activity of innovation. We have a list of over thirty solutions we plan to create. This includes wave powered boat, robotic oil tank cleaning system and some security and disaster management systems. Many of them are new designs and introduce a completely new approach to solving the problem. We see a very exciting road ahead.

he lakes, rivers and other waterbodies across Indian cities are becoming dumping yards and authorities struggle to check this hazard. With an aim to help them tackle this issue, AlphaMERS, an SME engaged in R&D, is providing solutions to mitigate, conserve, and manage various water -related problems that plague our environment. This Bangalore-based SME is offering cost-effective and tech-based solutions in the sunrise industries of marine environment, marine renewable, and maritime security. AlphaMERS has developed patentapplied solutions for river clean-up, offshore renewable energy, securing water bodies and specialised oil response. Innovation has led to commercialised solutions, successful pilot projects and working prototypes. AlphaMERS seeks to boost India’s sustainable development on the aquatic front by urging smart cities to make use of its solutions to restore their waterbodies to their healthy past. Floating Trash Barrier The Floating Trash Barrier is an indigenous design of a floating barrier that utilises the natural flow of water to trap the solid waste. They are deployed at strategic locations near roads to facilitate the onward disposal of removed trash, trapped by the barrier. The FTB does not require fuel or electricity to function.

It is made of stainless steel and aluminium and can withstand a corrosive environment. Being a floating device, it works effectively in changing water levels. The Floating Trash Barrier has been deployed by city corporations in Chennai and Bangalore. This device makes the skimmer boats redundant as the skimmer boats are expensive, operate only during daylight in good visibility in deep waters, require crew and burn fuel during operation. The FTBs work 24 x 7, trap all trash, require no crew or fuel and removal can be done by land-based gear every few days depending on collection. As of today, the Floating Trash Barriers have prevented 1 million pounds of trash, hyacinth and plastics from entering the sea. Hyacinth Puller AlphaMERS has designed the Weed/ Hyacinth Puller as a portable accessory for removing hyacinth, trash and weed from the surface of small water bodies. This helps to bring the floating solid waste to the sides. This device is operated manually with the help of 2 or more operators and does not require any other power source.

It works by pulling weed to one bank from where it can be removed manually or by land-based excavators. This sturdy device is made to withstand a corrosive environment of polluted water bodies. It is made of Aluminium and stainless steel. Box Drain Filter AlphaMERS Ltd. has designed the Box Drain Filter (BDF) as an aid to clean municipal drains. This is a system to filter out solid waste from box drains. It utilises the flow of the drain to trap the waste near it. It is usually located close to a road to facilitate onward disposal of recovered trash. The Box Drain Filter accumulates the trash that is removed manually. This is an eco-friendly device which does not require any other power source to function. The Box Drain Filter is made of Aluminium and stainless steel and can withstand corrosive environment. Its robust design ensures that no maintenance is required. The filter is customised as per specifications of the drain. The Box Drain Filter is a simple and effective solution that can eradicate problems of clogged drains and pollution caused by this.

Kishore Alva, Adani Group Karnataka Chief, has taken over as the new President of Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC). The Government of Karnataka has established KREDL in 1996, with the mandate to undertake development of renewable energy through private/public sector and community participation under the umbrella of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. With a vision of harnessing green and clean renewable energy sources in the state for environment benefits and Energy Security, KREDL is the nodal agency for the implementation of the RE Policy. Pavagada Solar Park- The Eighth Wonder of World While inaugurating Pavagada Solar Park, touted to the world’s largest of its kind, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called it the World’ Eighth Wonder. The park, named Shakthi Sthala, is developed by Karnataka Solar Power Development Corporation Limited (KSPDCL), a JV company with equity stake of 50% each between Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), GoI and KREDL. It is the first Solar Park of the state for a cumulative capacity of 2000MW in around 13000 acres which is the first of its type in the entire world wherein 2000MWs is generated at a single park. The ₹14,500-crore solar park was an important milestone in the history of Karnataka. The project will make Karnataka self-reliant in power production. The first phase of the park is capable of producing 600 MW and the remaining 1400 MW will be added by December 2018. Shakti Sthala will be the world’s largest solar power project once it attains its full potential of 2,000 MW. Entire 2000MW from Pavagada solar park will be connected to the grid by June 2019. The project has been executed within a record time of two years, with zero land acquisition. The farmers have leased out their land to the government for 28 years and are still the owners of their land. The tariff has been fixed at ₹3.30 per unit and farmers have been given the scope to grow by 5 per cent every two years. The farmers who have leased out their lands have joined the government as partners, shareholders, stakeholders, and are also beneficiaries of the mega project. Development and economic growth of a drought-hit region attracts industries,

which in turn will help in job creation and prevent migration of unemployed youth. Pavagada is the ideal example of this. It is one of the most drought-prone regions in the state and has witnessed a largescale migration over the past few years as people fled to nearby villages in search of livelihood. It region has been has been declared drought-hit in 54 of the last 60 years. More than 10,000 people had migrated annually from Pavagada. But, the solar park has changed the outlook of this area. “In the Pavagada Solar Park the infrastructure development is happening at a satisfactory pace. Moreover, the park spread across 13000 acres of bone dry land, has revived the lives of farmers who

It is quite interesting that under Article 333 of the Constitution of India, democracy offers a space for the community that is said to have no native state of their own. The Governor of a state can nominate a member of the Anglo-Indian community

Among the frontrunners, there are several key members of the community including former MLA Ivan Nigli. Since 1952, beginning from Sydney A Thomas, the 225-member state assembly has witnessed 14 Anglo-Indian MLAs till Vinisha Nero, who represented the community in the last assembly (2013-18). Enjoying the authority of law-making, these nominated MLAs also have financial powers like elected representatives. The process for the Anglo-Indian nomination to the current assembly has been started already with the ruling parties short-listing the names of prominent personalities of the

Anglo-Indians want Ivan Nigli as their MLA Last month, The Anglo-Indian Unity Centre, a body that represents the AngloIndian community in Karnataka, has urged Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to nominate Ivan Nigli as their representative in the current Assembly. Nigli has been an active member of the community in the State over the past four decades as an entrepreneur and social worker. He holds the record of posing the maximum number of questions by an Anglo-Indian MLA ever in the State Assembly. Ramana speaks with Advantage Karnataka about his musical journey.

dherence to the dictates of classicism, loyalty to the traditional contours of ragas, unobtrusive plucking, the fine tonal quality, and skilful modulation displayed in the recital, predict well for the development of a young artiste into a consummate performer. Here is one such youngster from Bangalore who is taking his audience to a state of trance through his Veena rendition. With so many accolades and awards to his credit, Ramana Balachandran is indeed a Vainika of the highest calibre. Ramana was hardly 100 months old, when he first stroked the strings of his mother’s veena to play a complex note, which in the hindsight is not beginner’s luck. He had undergone formal training briefly before he took off as one of the most promising classical musicians of our times. Veena Ramana is one of the

infinite stars that twinkle each time an angel points a finger to make a beautiful drawing, joining them-all. Born into a musical family, Ramana, at a very small age, has shown that he was much more than a playful child by trying to mimic the music around him. “A few things I remember include me imitating musicians, being awed by music in general, developing ideas about what appeared musical and what didn’t. I also remember noticing nuances but not having the vocabulary to express or discuss those. My earliest memories are of playfully upsetting the tuning pegs on the veena while my mother played on it. My parents used to make me identify ragas when I was very young. Music was there at home, but it was not until when I was 7 or 8 that I really started to understand or rather started to appreciate music with a certain amount of zeal,” says Ramana.

Later, he has made yet another bolder step by quitting regular school. The reason he was de-schooled had been the dissonance his parents felt with the current education system despite Ramana being a decent student. They noticed a distinct lack of space towards pursuing certain deeper things beyond academics. “Being home-schooled, I get my own time to learn anything. It might be academics, music, magic, or other hobbies. I also got to spend time in interesting places and with interesting people. There’s also this exploration and deep-dive possible. In my case, music became intense after I was home-schooled,” he says. All the early achievements of Ramana make good sense about how much of hard work and parenting went into this young artist’s making. They pull off a dual responsibility as both a parent and guru. Ramana says that being a parent and guru is much like being a chameleon on two different surfaces; like a natural blend of motherly/fatherly concern and the sternness/stoniness of a guru. “I don’t really think about my parents as being gurus and ‘parents’ separately, but when I do think about it, I think what they do in any situation is the most natural thing to do for that particular situation,” he says. instruction and encouragement, Ramana says that he has had wonderful gurus who encouraged and kindled interest. “My parents keep me on track, both musically and morally, making sure that I don’t go astray. There can be no better mentors than them. I also like it when someone points out a glitch in me because you get to learn something new that was unnoticed. Overall, things being what they are, I feel I’m the luckiest person on the planet, and I thank Bhagawan (Ramana Maharshi) for that,” he says. Apart from getting dissolved in his Veena, Ramana has other activities to keep him engaged. “I do get hooked on to my tablet sometimes. It is mostly when I surf YouTube for some wildlife videos, magic tricks, or some funny videos of animals, etc., apart from music of course,” he says. Ramana loves to spend time composing melodies etc. Mridangam holds a deep fascination for him, as also vocal music. “I also like playing football, badminton, cricket, and squash. And swimming too. I like to show off my magic tricks when I meet my friends, often failing miserably,” he says. Talking about his practice schedule, Ramana says that he tries to include some exercises for instrumental virtuosity. He believes that an instrumentalist’s aim should be to bring out a combination of instrumental beauty and musical content in a concert. “I like to work specifically on the musicality part in a variety of ways too. Finding one’s own manodharma is very much part of it. Pallavis fascinate me so I do spend some time working on related aspects. I also like to listen to great masters trying to grasp the structure underlying their ideas apart from enjoying the music itself,” says Ramana. The most heartening thing he has experienced and does experience every now and then is when he loses himself on stage. “There is nothing but the music and you, and you really don’t labour at producing anything specific. It is just that flow of discovery. I try to get into some of those moments in every concert; whether I succeed, or fail is another story! I would love to find a way to work hard on various things without fixating; I am still finding my way. This is a quality that deep contributors seem to have had. That inspires me,” says Ramana.

Bengaluru Airport to be Solar-Powered by 2020

aking a big leap in energy conservation and go green, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has decided to become fully solar-powered. The authorities have set an ambitious target of running the airport completely on solar power by 2020. This is in the light of plans for increasing the power demand to about 20 MW per day from the present 11 MW after the completion of the second terminal. The airport already generates 3.44MW from solar energy daily and the proposed capacity enhancement project will add another 8.35 MW in two phases, taking the total to about 12MW from the on-site energy generation. Additionally, BIAL plans to source another 8MW of solar energy from off-site. S Lakshminarayanan, Vice President

(Engineering & Maintenance), has said that currently, solar energy is harnessed from both roof-top and ground-mounted panels. “We aim to make the airport 100% renewable-energy powered by 2020. We also plan to increase our consumption through on-site and off-site solar power purchase agreements,” he said. If it goes by the plans, BIAL will be the second airport in India to follow the footsteps of Cochin International Airport Limited, Kerala, which now operates fully on solar power. The authorities of CIAL have set up a 12MW solar power project within the airport complex to cater to power requirements. BIAL also plans to install a solar power plant with a total capacity of 12MW, of which work has begun on installation of a 3.35MW capacity plant. The other plant with 5MW capacity is in the preliminary stage. Stating that conserving energy and generating renewable energy are two different areas of energy management, Lakshminarayanan added: “At BIAL, energy conservation efforts have been taken up and implemented.
