Markups & User Layers MetroMap offers useful markup and labelling tools to perform accurate measurements and add rich information to your projects. These markups / labels can be saved as layers for future viewing and exporting. Line Tool: draw and measure straight line distances Polygon Tool: draw polygons and measure edge lengths, perimeter, and area Marker Tool: drop a point at any location on the map and obtain its coordinates Label Tool: add text labels to any point on your map How to draw lines & polygons? Set the first point on the map using a single click of the left mouse key and moving in the direction you wish to draw your markup - add subsequent points by clicking the left mouse key each time – end your markup by double clicking the left mouse key How to edit lines & polygons? Edit lines & polygons till the point that you have saved them as a layer. To edit, first activate the markup by clicking it anywhere (when active, vertices shall be highlighted with a white stroke around them). Once active, you can move the markup by holding down the left mouse key and dragging any of the edges. You can modify an existing vertex by holding down the left mouse key and dragging any of the points. How to save markups as layers? Each of the markups explained above can be saved as user-created layers. Once the markup has been drawn, you can name the layer and hit the “Add Layer” button at the top for the markup to be saved in your layers section (on the left panel). How can I view and modify saved layers? Once saved, you can zoom to a layer by double clicking (left mouse key) on it in the layers panel or by using the “Zoom to Layer” button within the layer’s menu (accessed via the 3 dots icon). The layer’s menu also allows you to export, rename, and edit.
How can I upload external layers to MetroMap? You can upload pre-created layers to MetroMap and access them along with imagery as well as layers created within the web app. This can be done via the “Upload File” button within the Layers panel on the left. The layer formats supported include GeoJSON, KML, KMZ (geometry) and Shapefile (zipped).
Swipe & Compare The Swipe Tool enables users to compare imagery across two different dates. Once you have navigated to the map location that you wish to compare, pressing the swipe tool icon shall open a window to compare across the dates selected (using the drop down menu on each side). Swiping from left to right or vice versa lets you see changes that can be critical to your project. You can also take a screenshot of the comparison using the camera icon at the bottom left for project reports, etc. To go back to normal map view, close the window using the “Close” button at the top right.
Export Imagery The power of MetroMap is in the ability to download imagery for use in project reports, media publications, public consultation presentations, etc. The web-based platform allows you to download / export imagery using three different methods / tools explained below. Screenshot Tool: this tool works like your typical screen grab and allows you to capture a scene with the map rotated and with all layers visible. The downloaded screen capture provides you with the capture date as well as a north-facing arrow to convey map orientation. Download Tool: this tool is a quick way to download a higher resolution image (as a JPEG) that is georeferenced. Clip It Tool: this tool offers the highest resolution export with the ability to select your choice of map projection and file type. The georeferenced image shall be sent to the email selected. How do you draw your area of interest? Drawing the area of interest for the Download & Clip It tools is quick & easy - click your left mouse key for starting point as well as end point and then select “Download”. The approx. GSD shown on your screen gives you an idea of the resolution of the image that you will receive as a download. Note: - The area of interest drawn must be a rectangle. - The resolution shall drop (increase in GSD) as you select larger areas for download, shown also by the change in the colour of the rectangle drawn. What are the available map projections and downloadable formats? Map Projections – Web Mercator, GDA 94/2020, MGA 94/2020 Download Formats – JPEG, PNG, GeoTiff, Geospatial PDF, IMG
Edit View While we provide the optimal colour balance to all our imagery, we understand that screen settings can change the way you see our imagery, and hence the MetroMap web app allows you to modify the map’s contrast, brightness and sharpness using the Edit functionality. You can toggle each of these editable aspects and change their values to suit your requirement. Hitting reset shall bring the imagery back to its original. Note that the modified imagery can only be exported via the Screenshot tool. The Download and Clip It tools will always provide the original imagery, and can be modified in an external program, though we would not advise this.
Base Map Layers While the default map view is set to MetroMap imagery, MetroMap allows you to access other base map views that can be useful, especially in remote places that do not have MetroMap imagery coverage. These base maps include a satellite view and roads (or streets) view, which can be switched via the “Background Layers” drop down in the Settings (Gear icon on the left panel). MetroMap also allows you to access Google Street View data, so that you can access this without having to jump out of the application to an external platform. Google Street View can be accessed by dragging and dropping the Street View Icon (red-coloured person icon at bottom right) to your point of interest on the map. Note: - MetroMap imagery can be toggled on/off to view the base map layer (if required) via the “Toggle Imagery” function (Globe icon on right panel) - Roads (or streets) can be overlaid on top of MetroMap imagery using the “Toggle Roads” function (Road icon on right panel) - The “Toggle Bounds” function (Grid icon on right panel) allows you to toggle on/off the blue-green map extent bounds
Feature Layers MetroMap is more than just a map viewer, It offers rich data that support business planning and decision making in many ways. Key to this are our feature layers and attributes associated with locations on the map. MetroMap has partnered with Geoscape to provide rich data that can be accessed via the “Layers -> Add Layer” button. Geoscape Cadastre: once added to your layers, to activate this information & layer, check the tick box against the “Cadastre” layer and drag it to the top of your layers. Once that has been done, clicking on any property on the map shall provide you with the below details: Address, Area, Land Parcel Status & Type, Jurisdiction ID, Local Government Area, and Area Geoscape Building Footprint: once added to your layers, to activate this information & layer, check the tick box against the “Building Footprints” layer and drag it to the top of your layers. Once that has been done, clicking on any building on the map shall provide you with the below details: Address, Zoning details, Area, Average eave height, Centroid Coordinates, Elevation, Estimated number of floors/levels, Presence of solar panel (Yes/No), Presence of swimming pool (Yes/No), Maximum roof height, Roof complexity, Roof material
Set a Watch Point With up to 4 captures a year available for key areas across Australia, we are sure that you want to stay updated as soon as new imagery is available for your locations of interest on MetroMap. That is where “Watch Points” come in. With the Watch Points feature you can easily toggle on/off notifications for new captures of your area of interest. Watch Points can be set for any user-created layer (except “lines”) and the toggle button can be found within the corresponding layer’s menu (Three Dots next to the layer in the Layers Panel on the left). Notifications of new captures shall be sent to your registered email as soon as they are uploaded.
