I want to be in America … – singen sie in der West Side Story. I want to ski in America ... – sagt die innere Stimme jedem, der schon mal jenseits des großen Teiches die Bretter angeschnallt hat. Der trockene und leichte, oft meterhohe „Champagne Powder“ in den Rocky Mountains in Utah, Colorado und Wyoming, die wunderschönen Ski-Gebiete von Nevada, Idaho und Kalifornien, die atemberaubenden Heli-Ski-Runs in Alaska und British Columbia, die unvergleichliche Natur in Alberta und die bizarre Winter-Exotik in Chile – Amerika bietet das Beste, was die Schneewelt auf Lager hat. Dazu werden gerade Erstbesucher verblüfft sein von der Freundlichkeit der Menschen sowie vom Service an den Skiliften. Das berühmteste Beispiel für netten Service, das sicher jedem Skifahrer, der schon in Nordamerika war, in Erinnerung geblieben ist: kleine Boxen an den Liftgattern, gefüllt mit Papiertaschentüchern zur kostenlosen Entnahme. Und natürlich, dass jeder Lifteinbügler ein lächelndes „Have a nice day!“ wünscht. Auch wenn dies, bereits Tausende Male am Tag gesagt, vielleicht kein tiefgreifender Herzenswunsch des Personals, sondern nur eine nette Geste ist – vier einfache Worte machen doch einen großen Unterschied. The dry and light, often meter high „Champagne Powder” in the Rocky Mountains in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming, the beautiful skiing regions of Nevada, Idaho and California, the breathtaking Heli-ski runs in Alaska and British Columbia, the unmatched nature of Alberta and the bizarre winter exotic in Chile - America offers the best the snow world has in store. In addition, especially first-time visitors will be astonished at the friendliness of the people as well as the service at the ski lifts. The most famous example of friendly service that surely stays in the mind of every skier that has ever been in North America: Small boxes on the lift gates filled with free paper handkerchiefs. And, of course, that each lift-helper wishes a smiling „Have a Nice Day!“. Even if this has already been said a thousand times a day and may be nothing but a nice gesture by the staff rather than a profound heart‘s desire – four simple words that, nevertheless, make a big difference. Die Top-Ten-Skigebiete der USA? Das Resultat vieler Skimagazine fällt eigentlich immer ziemlich eindeutig aus: Den ersten Platz belegt Aspen, den zweiten Vail. Wer beim Skifahren in den USA das richtige Amerika-Gefühl bekommen will, für den ist Aspen erste Wahl. Eben weil Aspen kein künstlicher Retorten-Ort ist, sondern eine authentisch gewachsene ehemalige Silberminenstadt. Die zahllosen Promis, die hier ihren Urlaub verbringen oder Zweitwohnsitze erwarben, wissen schon warum. Und die vier Skigebiete um den Ort herum bieten so ziemlich alles, was das ambitionierte Skifahrerherz höher schlagen lässt. Nur rein skifahrerisch betrachtet ist hingegen Vail sicherlich das Nonplusultra. Denn die Back Bowls auf der „Rückseite“ von Vail bilden die vielleicht interessantesten „Tiefschnee-Schüsseln“ der Welt, die mittels Lift erreichbar sind. Also, nach Aspen jetten oder nach Vail düsen? Klare Antwort: Aspen und Vail. Und wer diese beiden schon kennt, sollte unbedingt auch einmal Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Steamboat oder Copper Mountain kennen lernen.
The top-ten ski regions in the USA? The findings of many skiing magazines are usually fairly conclusive: Aspen comes first and Vail second. For those skiers, who want to experience the real America-feeling in the USA, Aspen is the first choice. Precisely because Aspen is not an artificial resort location, but rather a former silver-mining town which grew up authentically. The countless celebrities, that spend their vacations or have acquired their secondary residences here, know why. And the four skiing regions around the town offer pretty much everything that makes the heart of the ambitious skier beat faster. Purely from a skiing point-of-view, however, the Vail is most certainly second to none. The Back Bowls on the “back side” of Vail represent perhaps the most interesting “deep snow bowls” in the world that are to be reached by lift. So, jet to Aspen or jet to Vail? The clear answer: Aspen and Vail. And for those of you that already know these two, they should also definitely get to know Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Steamboat or Copper Mountain.

Bei Utah denkt der eingefleischte Wintersportfan unweigerlich an die Olympischen Winterspiele von Salt Lake City 2002. Tiefschneefreaks wussten jedoch schon immer, dass Salt Lake City eine Art Wintersport-Hauptstadt der Welt ist. Zwar ist die 180 000-EinwohnerCity flach wie ein Brett und besitzt – als züchtige Mormonen-Metropole – nicht einmal eine richtig heiße Nacht-Piste,
aber die Stadt ist als Ausgangspunkt fürs Skifahren unschlagbar: Rund 25 Skigebiete liegen im Umkreis von 30 bis 90 Auto-Minuten. Darunter sind sogar vier Reviere mit Weltklasse. Das luxuriöse Deer Valley, wo einem am Parkplatz die Ski vom Auto abgenommen und zum Lift getragen werden, Snowbird und Alta im Little Cottonwood Canyon mit traumhaften Tiefschneehängen und den weltbes-

ten Buckelpisten, und natürlich Park City, das den Charme einer alten Silberminenstadt besitzt und pistentechnisch eine klasse Mischung aus allem bietet. Wer nicht in Salt Lake, sondern im Schnee logieren möchte, für den bietet sich Snowbird an – dort wohnt man direkt an der Piste. Oder Park City oder das betuchte Deer Valley. Das Schöne: Auch von jedem dieser Orte lassen sich die anderen Gebiete in kurzer Zeit erreichen.
When it comes to Utah the hardcore winter sport fan inevitably thinks of the Olympic Winter Games of Salt Lake City 2002. Deep snow freaks, however, always knew that Salt Lake City is a kind of winter sports capital of the world. Although the 180.000 resident strong city might, as it were, be as flat as a board and - as a chaste Mormon metropolis – not even really have a hot night life strip, the city is nevertheless unbeaten as a starting point for skiing: About 25 skiing regions are situated within a radius of 30 to 90 car-minutes. Among these are even four regions of world format. The luxurious Deer Valley where one’s skis are
taken from the car on the parking lot and carried to lift, Snowbird and Alta in the Little Cottonwood Canyon with amazing deep snow slopes and the world’s best mogul slopes and, of course, Park City, that has the charm of an old silver mine town and from ski run point-of-view offers a great mix of everything. For those that do not wish to stay in Salt Lake, but want to stay in the snow, Snowbird – there one resides directly next to the ski course - , Park City or on the well-off Deer Valley. The great thing: Even from every one of these locations the other regions can be reached in a short time.

Sicher, Colorado und Utah bilden die Kernstücke des amerikanischen Skifahrens. Und wer noch nie in den USA im Schnee stand, sollte seine ersten „Runs“ tatsächlich in Colorado oder Utah genießen. Aber danach unbedingt auch die sozusagen „exotischen“ Skigebiete der Vereinigten Staaten kennen lernen. Zum Beispiel Jackson Hole in Wyoming. Steiles Terrain und 100 Prozent Wildwest-Flair in Jackson versprechen einen heißen Skitrip. Und gilt das angrenzende Montana als Land der Pferdeflüsterer, so möchten wir Wyoming unbedingt als Land der Skiflüsterer bezeichnet wissen: So individuell werden die Gäste dort von den Guides betreut! Hochinteressant natürlich auch Idaho, wo der kalifornische Gouverneur Arnold Schwarzenegger gerne in Sun Valley wedelt (carven kann der einstige Steiermärker noch nicht), falls er nicht gerade aus regionalpatriotischen Gründen in seinem eigenen Kalifornien auf die Bretter steigt. Zum Beispiel in Squaw Valley, Heavenly Valley oder Lake Tahoe oder Mammoth Mountain. Und was man ganz unbedingt gesehen und erlebt haben muss: Skifahren in Taos, New Mexico, wo man mit den steilsten Skipisten Amerikas lockt. Und einem Ambiente im Adobe-Baustil, der zwar für die Region typisch ist, aber im Skigebiet trotzdem sehr exotisch wirkt. Sie werden garantiert begeistert sein!
Sure, Colorado and Utah make up the core of American skiing. And anyone who has never stood in the snow in the United States, definitely should enjoy his first „runs” in Colorado or Utah. But after that, he should by all means also get to know the, as it were, “exotic” skiing regions of the United States. For example Jackson Hole in Wyoming. The steep terrain and the 100 percent Wild West flair in Jackson promise a hot skiing trip. And if the adjacent lying Montana is known as the horse-whisperer country then we demand that Wyoming be described as ski-whisperer country: That’s how individually guests get attended to by the guides! Highly interesting, of course, is Idaho, where the Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger likes to do his fanning in Sun Valley (the former Styrian cannot yet do carving) if he doesn’t ski in his own territory California for regio-patriotic reasons. For example in Squaw Valley, Heavenly Valley or Lake Tahoe or Mammoth Mountain. And one thing which definitely has to be seen and experienced: Skiing in Taos, New Mexico, where one is tempted with the steepest ski runs in America. And an ambience in the Adobe-architectural style, that might be very typical for the region, but nevertheless looks very exotic in the ski region. You’ll love it, guaranteed!

D er Traum vom Heli - S kiing
bis zehn Stunden so viel wie in Europa während einer kompletten Saison. Wozu natürlich auch die sagenhaften „Fat-BoySkis“ beitragen, die man auf Wunsch geliehen bekommt. Mit ihnen hat man das Gefühl über den Schnee zu gleiten, als ob man beim Surfen wäre. „Mit denen“, heißt es, „kann es wirklich jede(r)!“ Und falls immer noch Zweifel bestehen, gibt es sogar Heliski-Anfängerwochen. Auf jeden Fall ist Heli-Skiing ein Adrenalinspiegel treibendes Abenteuer und ein Ski-Erlebnis der ultimativen Art. Ge-
legentlich können die durch den Powder zischenden Freaks nicht mehr anders, als mit: „Yeeeeeeaaaaaaah“, „Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiipppppiiiiiiiiiii“ oder ähnlich ihre Emotionen los zu werden. Wer sich Skifahrer nennt, sollte dieses Abenteuer zumindest einmal in seinem Leben ausprobieren! Und sei es noch so teuer. Manche Freaks sparen oft jahrelang dafür. Und beginnen nach ihrer ersten Heli-Woche, der Erfüllung ihres Traumes also, gleich wieder zu sparen. Denn Heli-Skiing, dies als Warnung, macht süchtig ...

Sicher, ein perfekt gezogener CarvingSchwung ist absolut scharf. Und feiner Firn ist auch großartig. Aber die Krönung von allem, keine Frage, ist Tiefschneefahren. Und die Krönung des Tiefschneefahrens ist Heli-Skiing. Denn beim Heli-Skiing in Kanada oder Alaska schafft man an einem einzigen Tag so viele sagenhafte „Deep-Powder-Runs“ wie ein Tourengeher im fernen Europa vielleicht den gesamten Winter nicht! Was zugleich bedeutet, wer kein allzu geübter Tiefschneefahrer ist, lernt hier in acht

Sure, a perfectly drawn carving turn is absolutely great. And fine corn snow is also great. But the pinnacle of it all is, no question, deep snow skiing. And the pinnacle of deep snow skiing is Heli-skiing. Because with Heli-skiing in Canada or Alaska you’ll have managed just as many fabulous „deep-powder runs” in a single day as a ski mountaineer in the distant Europe will perhaps have during the entire winter! Which at the same time means, that not very experienced deep snow
skiers will learn in eight to ten hours just as much as you would in Europe during an entire season! Attributable, of course, also to the fantastic „Fat-Boy-skis”, that one gets lent if desired. With them, one has the feeling of gliding over the snow as if one were surfing. „With these”, it is said, „ anyone can do it!” And if doubts still exist, there are also the Heliski-beginner-weeks. In any case, Heli-skiing is an adrenaline pumping adventure and a skiing experience of the ultimate kind.
Occasionally, the freaks whizzing through the powder can do nothing but roar: „Yeeeeeeaaaaaaah“, „Jiiiiiiiiiiiiiipppppiiiiiiiiiii“ or leave something similar echoing through the solitary mountains. If you call yourself a skier you should at least once in your life have tried this adventure! No matter how expensive. Some freaks often save years for it. And after their first Heliweek - fulfilling their dream - they start saving money again. Just as a warning, Heli-skiing is addictive...

Früher, als es noch Auto-Stopper gab und wir sie immer ein Stück mitnahmen, fragten wir stets: „Wo war es am schönsten auf all euren Trips?“ Etwa jede(r) Zweite antwortete: „In Vancouver!“ Das sagte uns nun gar nichts. Bis wir zum ersten Mal selbst dort waren: was für eine faszinierende Stadt! In der die Menschen aus der Wildnis drum herum mit kleinen Wasserflugzeugen landen, um dann an Land ihre Einkäufe zu erledigen. Und wo sie dieses ewig spannende
und zugleich entspannende Leben zwischen Wassersport hie und Skifahren da genießen. Denn gar nicht weit weg von Vancouver, das man bei einem British Columbia-Trip einfach besuchen muss, liegt ja bereits Whistler, eines der besten Skigebiete des Kontinents. Vor wenigen Jahren noch ein Insidertipp, ist es heute berühmt: Weil es der Austragungs-Ort der alpinen olympischen Ski-Rennen 2010 sein wird. Whistler, wir geben das ehrlich zu, hat jedoch auch einen kleinen Nachteil: Das Skigebiet erhält der
Pazifik-Nähe wegen gelegentlich ein wenig viel Feuchtigkeit von oben. Doch bei normaler Witterung ist Whistler-Blackcomb unglaublich gut! Auch die anderen Skigebiete haben es in sich, Fernie und Kicking Horse versinken manchmal regelrecht unter einer bis zu zehn Meter hohen Schneedecke und in Revelstoke ist „Heli-Schnuppern“ möglich – für alle, die das mal einen Tag lang testen wollen. Back in the days, when there were still hitchhikers and we always gave them a short ride, we always asked: “What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been on your journeys?” About every second one replied: “In Vancouver!” That didn’t mean anything to us, until we went there for the first time ourselves: What a fascinating city! A place where people from the surrounding wilderness arrive with small seaplanes, just to do their shopping on land. Where they enjoy
an always exciting and at the same time relaxing lifestyle between water sports and skiing. Indeed, not far from Vancouver (a city one simply has to visit during a trip to British Columbia) lies Whistler - one of the best skiing regions on the continent. A few years ago a mere insider tip, today it is famous: This is because it will be one of the Olympic alpine ski race venues in 2010. Admittedly Whistler also has a small disadvantage: Due to its proximity to the Pacific, the skiing region sometimes gets a little
too much moisture from above. However, during normal weather conditions Whistler is incredibly good! The other skiing regions also have a lot to offer. Fernie and Kicking Horse sometimes disappear under a blanket of snow up to ten meters high and in Revelstoke, a “Heli-trial course” is possible - for all of those that only want to test it for one day. Oft ist es ja so: Man fliegt stundenlang irgendwo hin und fährt von dort aus wiederum erst stundenlang mit dem Bus, ehe das Urlaubsziel erreicht ist. „Shuttle“ heißt dieser Transfer vom Flughafen zum Hotel – und die meisten Menschen hassen ihn. Den in Alberta freilich werden Sie lieben. Er ist Sightseeing pur, denn der Bus fährt vom Airport Calgary an den Olympiaanlagen von 1988 vorbei direkt in die Prärie hinein. Jenseits der Scheiben tut sich genau jenes faszinierende endlose Bison-Weideland auf, das aus allen CowboyFilmen bekannt ist. Und kaum ist die Prärie vorbei, beginnen die faszinierenden Rocky Mountains. Ein Gegensatz ohnegleichen, der jedoch signalisiert, dass Alberta ein wahrlich wunderbares Land mit großer Natur ist. Weshalb in Banff etwa zahllose Lassie-Folgen gedreht wurden. Und im Jasper National Park „River of no Return“ mit Marilyn Monroe und Robert Mitchum. Mit etwas Glück bekommt Mann in der Lodge genau jenes Zimmer, in dem Marilyn schlief. Und die Dame natürlich jenes von Robert. Alberta ist zwar kein Ort fürs Heli-Skiing, dafür ist ausgezeichnetes Pisten-Skifahren möglich. Ausgesprochen fabelhafte Abfahrten finden sich in Sunshine und Lake Louise – beides Weltcup-Orte mit einer sehr hohen Schneesicherheit. Lake Louise besitzt neben seinen prächtigen Pisten natürlich noch den gleichnamigen berühmten See, der eigentlich schon wieder eine eigene Reise wert ist. Lassen Sie sich nachts mal mit dem Pferdeschlitten darüber ziehen, denn wenn Sie Glück haben, sehen Sie vielleicht das Polarlicht!
Often it’s like this: You fly somewhere for hours - and from there on one again drives few hours by bus, before the vacation destination is finally reached. This transfer from the airport to the hotel is called “Shuttle” and most people hate it. The one in Alberta, however, you will certainly love. It is pure sightseeing because the bus drives from the Airport in Calgary past the Olympic facilities of 1988 - directly into the prairie! On the other side of the window pane a fascinating and endless bison grazing land stretches known from all the cowboy movies. And just as the prairie is over the fascinating Rocky Mountains begin. An unprecedented contrast that, nevertheless, signalizes that Alberta is a truly wonderful land with great nature. That is why countless ‘Lassie’ episodes were shot in Banff. And in the Jasper National Park “River of No Return” with Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum. With a little luck one will get exactly that room in the lodge in which Marilyn slept. And as lady, of course, that of Robert. Although Alberta is no land for Heli-skiing, it nevertheless provides for excellent slope skiing. Absolutely fabulous ski runs are to be found in Sunshine and Lake Louise - both World Cup locations with a very high certainty of snow. Besides its magnificent ski runs Lake Louise naturally offers the famous lake bearing the same name, which is also worth a separate trip. Let yourself be pulled across it at night in a horse-drawn sleigh, because: if you’re lucky you’ll see the northern lights! You will be glad to have experienced this!

Unentdeckte Skiw elten
Natürlich denkt man bei Tiefschneefahren und Freeriden immer zuerst an die nordamerikanischen PulverschneeGebiete. Doch eines der weltbesten Reviere dafür liegt quasi gleich vor unserer Haustür. Zum Beispiel das Monte Rosa Massiv – Freerider aus der ganzen Welt beziehen jeden Winter in einem der drei abgeschiedenen Täler unterhalb der Gipfel Quartier und warten auf den großen „Powderday“.
Bei Neuschnee ist der Andrang im Tal dann für kurze Zeit groß, nicht etwa weil plötzlich Tausende von Skifahrern unterwegs sind, sondern weil nur ganz wenige Lifte die Tiefschneefreaks auf den Berg bringen. Unpräparierte Abfahrten dagegen gibt es zahllose, der Thrill ist hier fast genau so wie beim Heli-Skiing. Ein Skiführer sollte übrigens immer dabei sein, nur so lässt sich der Hype voll auskosten – eben genau so wie beim Heli-Skiing.

With deep snow skiing and free-riding one naturally always first thinks of the North American skiing and heli-skiing regions. But one of the world’s best spots lies virtually on our doorstep. The Monte Rosa Mountains – Free-riders from all over the world set up camp every winter in one of the three remote valleys below the summit and wait for the big „powder day”. With fresh snow fall the rush in the val-
ley is great for a short time. Not because thousands of skiers are suddenly out and about but because only very few lifts can bring the snow freaks onto the mountain. On the other hand, there are countless unprepared ski-runs; the thrill here is almost exactly like in heli-skiing. By the way, a ski guide should always be present, that way the unlimited ski fun can be enjoyed safely – just like in heli-skiing.
