OUR MISSION:

ABOUT AFA

AFA ENHANCES ITS MEMBERS’ ABILITIES TO FOSTER IMPACTFUL FRATERNITY/SORORITY EXPERIENCES.

OUR VISION: AFA IS THE CATALYTIC FORCE IN ALIGNING THE FRATERNITY/ SORORITY EXPERIENCE WITH THE CHANGING DYNAMICS AND ENDURING PRINCIPLES OF HIGHER EDUCATION.

CORE COMPETENCIES FOR EXCELLENCE Two of the Association’s primary purposes are professional development and support for members and advocacy for the fraternity/ sorority advising profession; the Core Competencies are designed to further those goals. The cultivation and consistent demonstration of these competencies are keys to success among professionals and volunteers who work with fraternities and sororities. AFA members are encouraged to strive to continually strengthen their skills and gain more experience in these areas. In working with fraternities and sororities, the understanding and demonstration of these competencies will allow advisors to provide undergraduate members with positive fraternity/ sorority experiences.

EDUCATOR

A fraternity/sorority advisor applies student development and/or organizational development theory to his/her practice in challenging and supporting organizations and individual members.

COLLABORATOR

VALUES ALIGNER

A fraternity/sorority advisor sets and clearly communicates high expectations for chapters as values-based organizations hosted at an institution of higher education and holds members/organizations accountable for their actions.

LEADER

A fraternity/sorority advisor collaborates with and often serves as a liaison among potential and initiated members, chapter officers, campus administrators, alumni/ae, volunteer advisors, house corporations, inter/national organization staff members, and/or inter/national officers.

A fraternity/sorority advisor is an involved, engaged member of a campus community and/or the interfraternal movement and participates in opportunities for continued professional development through the Association and other organizations.

RESEARCHER

INNOVATOR

A fraternity/sorority advisor uses research to guide practice. They assess the needs of groups, engage constituents in strategic planning to set goals for ongoing development and to provide programs and resources, and assess the impact of those initiatives.

A fraternity/sorority advisor implements new programs that benefit members.

ADVISOR

ADMINISTRATOR

A fraternity/sorority advisor guides and facilitates the work of fraternity/sorority chapters and/or governing councils and their respective officers.

A fraternity/sorority advisor maintains accurate and comprehensive records on membership statistics, scholarship achievement, and disciplinary matters.

ON-SITE FUNDRAISING The Annual Meeting provides the Foundation with three opportunities to raise funds to support the Association: the sale of “Because You Believe” Stickers, donations in honor of award recipients, and the largest earner, the Silent Auction. Funds raised through these three tactics are used to fund Association education, grants, and scholarships that directly benefit members. The 2014 Silent Auction was the 21st to benefit the AFA Foundation and thanks to our generous donors, the auction proceeds represented 13% of the annual revenue for the year. Thank you to all who donated and continue to support the auction as a donor and/or a buyer. Location

PROFESSIONALS’ INSTITUTE The Professionals’ Institute began in 2013 an effort to provide an authentic and

valuable learning and development opportunity to professionals who accompany

student leaders to undergraduate fraternity/sorority leadership conferences. This program is sponsored by gifts to the AFA Foundation.

In 2014, the Association offered the Professionals’ Institute at AFLV Central and AFLV

West and experienced great success.

GLOBAL SERVICE TRIP In 2014, we were excited to offer our members the chance to join us in Jamaica for the first ever Global Service

Trip. A partnership between AFA and Delta Upsilon Fraternity, The Global Service Trip is an experience intended to give participants a new perspective that pushes them to improve both professionally and personally. Ten participants

joined us December 13-19, 2014 and spent week connecting with each other though service to the community and a guided curriculum focused on global citizenship and social justice.

“I’M LEARNING MORE ABOUT LIFE IN GENERAL, AND THE PEOPLE AROUND ME AND THAT WE’RE NOT AS DIFFERENT AS WE THINK WE ARE.” - 2014 GLOBAL SERVICE TRIP PARTICIPANT

FIRST 90 DAYS The First 90 Days program exists to support the first-time fraternity/sorority life professional in their personal and

professional development, so that they can positively impact the lives of others and enable them to accomplish the great things they are meant to do.

In 2014, we were excited to partner with Simon Sinek, Inc. on the educational elements of the First 90 Days

Program. Simon Sinek’s, “Start With Why, Why University” (Beta version) offers the Why Discovery Course, a course

to help people “learn their why.” We built on the previous components of the First 90 Days program, utilizing the Why Discovery Course and incorporating guided reflection. There were a total of 48 participants in 2014.

AFA1976.ORG After months of planing and work, the Association launched a new website the first week of September 2014. Not

only did the website redesign bring with it faster web capabilities usability, but it also gave us a chance to reevaluate

how we organized the ways in which we talk with our users, helping us to create a more unified vision of AFA’s brand

not just through the site but as a whole. To that, this rebuild can be seen as a formative step in understanding what and

how we as an association can be understood by our base and how we can better communicate that meaning as

we move forward. Through our analytics engines we have already seen a marked increase in our engagement with our audience.
