CORE COMPETENCIES
Two of the Association’s primary purposes are professional development and support for members and advocacy for the fraternity/sorority advising profession; the Core Competencies are designed to further those goals. The cultivation and consistent demonstration of these competencies are keys to success among professionals and volunteers who work with fraternities and sororities. AFA members are encouraged to strive to continually strengthen their skills and gain more experience in these areas. In working with fraternities and sororities, the understanding and demonstration of these competencies will allow advisors to provide undergraduate members with positive fraternity/sorority experiences.
Administrator A fraternity/sorority advisor maintains accurate and comprehensive records on membership statistics, scholarship achievement, and disciplinary matters. The advisor works with all necessary constituents and partners, to resolve any member, organization, and/or institution crisis. An advisor may supervise or oversee student, professional, or volunteer staff. An advisor may have responsibilities in managing, or supporting students in managing, on- or off-campus chapter residential areas, offices, and/or other organization properties to ensure they are accessible and operating properly, safely. An advisor may also assist students in planning events.
Advisor A fraternity/sorority advisor guides and facilitates the work of fraternity/sorority chapters and/ or governing councils and their respective officers. The advisor provides guidance, training, and resources on various organizational management topics, including but not limited to risk management, financial management, and creating an inclusive environment. The advisor assists the organizations in being prepared for unexpected or crisis situations and assists the student leaders in managing these situations and linking them to additional support services as needed. An advisor builds relationships with members to assist them with organizational, academic, or other concerns.
Collaborator A fraternity/sorority advisor collaborates with and often serves as a liaison among potential members, initiated members, chapter officers, campus administrators, alumni/alumnae, volunteer advisors, house corporation officers, inter/national organization staff members, and/or inter/national officers. The advisor works with these diverse constituencies on the common goal of positively impacting the reputation and success of the fraternity/sorority community by building partnerships with colleagues, and experts to impact positive and inclusive change; sharing information regularly; and maximizing the reach of and access to limited resources. The advisor builds trusting relationships for the betterment of the members and organizations.
Educator A fraternity/sorority advisor applies student development and/or organizational development theory to his/her practice in challenging and supporting organizations and individual members. The advisor also takes advantage of professional development and educational opportunities and applies that knowledge and awareness to his/her practice. The advisor provides experiential learning opportunities that enhance the education students receive inside the classroom. An advisor provides leadership development and other educational opportunities for undergraduate members and alumni/ae volunteers that promote an open and inclusive learning environment for all participants.

Innovator A fraternity/sorority advisor implements new programs that benefit members. An advisor promotes the practical application and effective use of technology to communicate with members, support their positive use of online communities, provide online educational opportunities, and promote an inclusive and accessible fraternity/sorority experience.
Leader A fraternity/sorority advisor is an involved, engaged member of a campus community and/or the interfraternal movement and participates in opportunities for continued professional development through the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors and other organizations. An advisor exhibits leadership skills in his/her daily work through critical thinking, risk taking, and creativity, and by making values-based decisions. The advisor seeks knowledge to develop increased competence to advance goals of valuing diversity, strengthening inclusion, and promoting social justice. An advisor also shares his/her knowledge and mentors others in the field.
Researcher A fraternity/sorority advisor uses research to guide practice. The advisor assesses the needs of organizations, engages constituents in strategic planning to set goals for ongoing development and to provide programs and resources for the benefit of chapters and members, and also assesses the impact of those initiatives. The advisor maintains an awareness and knowledge of how current issues and research impact the undergraduate student experience, the chapters, and/or the fraternity/sorority community.
Values Aligner A fraternity/sorority advisor sets and clearly communicates high expectations for chapters as valuesbased organizations hosted at an institution of higher education and holds members/organizations accountable for their actions. The advisor considers issues of fundamental fairness, equity, and access when developing resources, implementing programs, and enacting community, chapter, and/ or organization initiatives. As a result he/she promotes an inclusive and supportive environment, eliminating barriers that discriminate against full participation by all students. An advisor challenges members to live up to their shared organizational values and have these expectations of one another. When necessary, an advisor works with the institution’s and/or inter/national organization’s student disciplinary process. The advisor recognizes students and chapters for their improvements and achievements in adhering to their founding principles and institution/organization expectations.

ADAM BRAUN
is a New York Times bestselling author and the Founder & CEO of MissionU. He was previously Founder & CEO of Pencils of Promise, the awardwinning organization that has built nearly 400 schools around the world. He has been featured as a speaker at The White House, the United Nations and the Clinton Global Initiative. He has also been named to Business Insider’s 40 Under 40, Wired Magazine‘s 50 People Who Are Changing the World, and was selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s original ten Global Shapers. Braun began working summers at hedge funds when he was sixteen years old, sprinting down the path to a successful Wall Street career. But while traveling abroad as a college student he met a young boy begging on the streets of India, who when asked what he wanted most in the world, simply answered, “a pencil.”
This small request became the inspiration for Pencils of Promise, the organization Braun would leave Bain & Company several years later to start with just $25. Using his unique “for-purpose” approach, he led the organization through $30M of funds raised before focusing his efforts to reimagining the broken higher education system in the US through his new venture MissionU. Braun graduated from Brown University and is now a frequent speaker at conferences, colleges and Fortune 500 companies. He avidly engages with his social media following of over 900,000 people and in 2015 he received the nation’s most prestigious award for public service, the Jefferson Award. His book The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change debuted at #2 on the New York Times Bestseller list and went on to become a #1 national bestseller.

ADVANCE PROGRAMS Wednesday FRAMEWORKS FOR INNOVATION IN THE GREEK EXPERIENCE 1:00pm - 5:00pm | Room: M303 Program Sponsored by CrowdChange
Pre-registration is required. As a campus area steeped in tradition, it can be difficult to make a case for change in fraternity and sorority life. However, as the landscape these traditions exist in changes, organizations and their professionals must adapt. Facilitators and serial innovators Dr. Josie Ahlquist and Amma Marfo will share a medley of frameworks and tools to rethink innovation on your campus, while still honoring and maintaining tradition. These frameworks help determine how innovation might go over on your campus, offer strategies to overcome resistance to change, and address systemic but hard-to-act-on issues in a methodical way. Each attendee will create individual goals for each of the three innovation frameworks presented, including Design Thinking, Finding Creative Voice and Cultivating Creativity.
Dr. Josie Ahlquist, Research Associate, Leadership Instructor and Independent Speaker, Florida State University Amma Marfo, Speaker and Consultant, Fun Enterprises LIMITLESS LEADERSHIP: MAXIMIZING YOUR PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE 1:00pm - 5:00pm | Room: M304 Program Sponsored by CrowdChange

Through the use of the personality-based behavioral assessment, Predictive Index, participants will have the ability to understand how they are uniquely hard-wired and how key personality traits intrinsically relate to workplace performance. Participants will use their assessment results to build upon their strengths, lead others more effectively, collaborate successfully, and ultimately create a personalized leadership development action plan to guide their career performance and succession. One participant who recently completed the Predictive Index commented, “I’ve done a lot of personality and leadership style assessments and I was shocked on how accurate the PI was, it was spooky how well it described me.” The goal of this program is to provide all participants with the opportunity to develop professionally by having a deeper self-awareness which enhances retention and longevity in the fraternal industry.
Tom Healy, CEO & Managing Partner, LaunchPoint Jessi McPherrin, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, LaunchPoint IDENTIFYING PRIVILEGE IN THE PROFESSION 1:00pm - 5:00pm | Room: International Salon C Program Sponsored by Western Michigan University
Pre-registration is required. Getting to the heart of the matter – for more than a decade there have been discussions centered around privilege and systemic injustice within the structures of fraternal organizations at the collegiate level. Through this engaging, interactive and stimulating session, professionals will have the opportunity to collectively identify ways in which we can define our roles as practitioners, advisors, educators, and members of the fraternal movement as related to privilege. Ownership and acknowledgement are the first steps in moving towards development – let’s start now. Program sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion at Western Michigan University and by Delta Phi Epsilon.
Hailey Mangrum, Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, Western Michigan University Nicki Rowlett, Assistant Director of Fraternity, Sorority, Cooperative Life, Purdue University Harold Brown, Coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life, Vanderbilt University

Education
seminars & tracks Wednesday GRADUATE TRAINING TRACK: PASSION. PERSEVERANCE. GRIT. DO YOU HAVE IT? 1:00pm - 5:00pm | Room: M101 Program endowed by Michelle Guobadia
In our industry, it is common to see wide-eyed and eager young professionals come into the profession. Yet, within a couple of years, they are gone. By utilizing a scientifically validated behavioral assessment and the powerful new book, Grit, by Angela Duckworth, as a foundation for our discussion, through conversation, reflection, and activities, participants will dig deeper to understand the importance of self-awareness, adversity, and action and how it relates to maintaining focus, passion, and longevity in our field. Industry leaders will present historical data and knowledge to assist with participant’s understanding of moments that have shaped the fraternal movement and project what challenges lie ahead. Curriculum Developed by LaunchPoint & CAMPUSPEAK.
Thursday NEW PROFESSIONALS SEMINAR 1:30pm - 4:00pm | Room: M301 Pre-registration is required.
During this seminar, new professionals will have the opportunity to come together to lean in, rise strong and talk about the fortitude of this profession. Professionals in this field want to change the world. But changing the world is hard when we are working with the highest risk students, at a high risk time, in high risk university settings within high risk fraternity and sorority environments. And then we want these same students to create “values based” organizations. Being a fraternity/sorority professional is tough, but it is also so rewarding! This session will focus on longevity and how to avoid the dreaded burnout. Additionally, you will gain some good tips (and tricks) to feel equipped to do your job so you can make a difference in lives of our students…and potentially change the world! Presented by: Lori Hart, Ph.D, Director of Educational Initiatives, Holmes Murphy Fraternal Practice
SEASONED PROFESSIONALS SEMINAR 1:30pm - 4:00pm | Room: International 6 Pre-registration is required.
In an era of budget cuts, increased scrutiny on educational outcomes, and even more legal challenges, it is an extremely challenging environment for professionals working in the fraternity and sorority community. There is increased pressure to find ways to speak to the various constituencies: presidents and trustees, students and parents, mainstream media and social media. This session will explore several of the hot topics impacting the fraternity and sorority community (such as continued hazing deaths and moves to remove groups from campus), and discuss strategies for seasoned professionals to address these issues while working effectively with various constituencies. We’ll wrestle with hard questions and together work on new strategies to improve the sorority and fraternity communities. Presented by: Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough, President, Dillard University
saturday GRADUATE TRAINING TRACK: CAPSTONE 2:00pm - 4:00pm | Room: M101 Program endowed by Michelle Guobadia
The Graduate Training Track Capstone is the culmination of new knowledge, new connections, and new experiences. During this session, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their Annual Meeting experience and how they can best utilize their Predictive Index results to develop a professional plan for success.

Thursday FIRESIDE CHAT MEET & GREET 4:30pm - 6:00pm | Room: Imperial Ballroom Pre-registration is required.
Campus-based professionals will be stationed at tables and organization-based professionals and volunteers will be about to seek out institutional representatives with whom they want to meet. The intention of the Meet & Greet is not to conduct full Fireside Chats, but rather to make introductions and potentially schedule a future meeting. While this is a great opportunity to put a face with a name, meet up with an old colleague, or say a quick hello, this is not an appropriate environment to bring up major issues which you have not previously scheduled a Fireside Chat to discuss. We encourage you to stop by the institutions’ tables to say hello and introduce yourself. Begin creating those partnerships early!
FRIDAY AFA/AFAF RECOGNITION LUNCHEON 12:00pm - 1:30pm | Room: Marquis Ballroom FIRESIDE CHATS 4:00pm - 6:30pm | Room: Imperial Ballroom Pre-registration is required.
Fireside Chats are a forum for campus and inter/ national organization representatives to reinforce their collaborative efforts on a variety of issues through brief, 20-minute meetings. These meetings will provide attendees the opportunity to discuss the progress of their organizations and create collaborative action plans for future success. Given the time limitations of these meetings, Fireside Chats should serve as a starting point for one-on-one discussions later on or regular communication between inter/national organization representatives and campus professionals. We strongly recommend that you inform the other party of discussion items prior to the meetings in order for both parties to be fully prepared.
Saturday CLOSING BANQUET 7:30pm - 9:30pm | Room: Marquis Ballroom Join us for the Closing Banquet as we honor the recipients of the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Awards, the Dr. Robert H. Shaffer Award, the Jack L. Anson Award, and the Dr. Kent L. Gardner Award.

EXCURSIONS Wednesday CNN CENTER TOUR 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Pre-registration is required. Get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes access tour to the world headquarters of CNN! You’ll take a 50-minute walking tour with your own tour guide through the halls of the CNN Center, and you’ll have the opportunity to take an inside look at how a live broadcast is produced and aired to viewers internationally. You’ll also get a more in-depth look at how the world’s largest news organization operates, and how CNN became the worldwide leader in news. The CNN Center is located .8 miles from the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. For anyone signed up to attend, we’ll meet in the hotel lobby at 3:45 p.m. to walk over.
THURSDAY SWEETWATER BREWING COMPANY TOUR & DINNER 6:00pm - 8:00pm Pre-registration is required.
SweetWater Brewery was named as one of the nation’s top 20 craft brewers in 2013 by the Brewers Association, ranking in the top 20 out of more than 2,000 breweries nationwide in sales by volume. Join us for dinner and a sampling of SweetWater’s best at this semi-private event featuring a buffet menu with pulled pork, mac & cheese, baked beans, and beverages, along with a brewery tour. Sweetwater is located 5 miles from the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, so we recommend participants leaving by 5:15 p.m. to make the tour. Transposition is not included in the ticket price. Carpooling, Ubering, and Lyfting are all encouraged as parking is limited. Please make sure you bring your ID and any cash for gratuity.
