2010 MEN’S SOCCER GUIDE

HEAD COACH DOUG HILL Doug Hill enters his fourth season as head coach at Air Force in 2010. Hill spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Air Force before being promoted to head coach in June of 2007. A 1983 graduate of the Academy, Hill guided the Falcons to a 7-8-2 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in ‘09. He enters the 2010 campaign with a 17-33-3 career record. In his three seasons at the helm, Hill has coached 10 Falcons to all-conference honors, including three last season, all of whom graduated last spring. However, Hill does have 11 letterwinners and five starters returning from last year’s squad. Hill, who holds a United States Soccer Federation "A" license, was a four-year varsity letterman at Air Force and played for his predecessor, Lou Sagastume. He was chosen as team captain both his junior and senior seasons. In all four years, Hill helped the Falcons win the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship. After graduation, he remained at the Academy as the assistant soccer coach and a physical education instructor for one year. Hill left the Academy in 1984 for Dyess AFB, Texas, where he was an instructor navigator in the C-130 aircraft. In addition, he assisted and filled in as the interim head soccer coach for the men's and women's soccer teams at Hardin-Simmons University (Texas) from 1986-1988. In 1988, he led the women's team to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship game and finished second in the nation. He also played on the all-Air Force soccer team in 1985 and 1987 and coached the 1986 team. After eight years away from the Academy, Hill returned as an assistant coach in 1992 and helped guide the Falcons to consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament in '92 and '93. In 1993, the Falcons advanced to the Final Eight after beating undefeated and No. 1-ranked Creighton, 2-1, in four overtimes on the road in the first round. The 1996 team advanced to the WAC championships after going 14-3-3 during the regular season, while the 1997 squad earned a trip to the NCAA Tourney. Hill moved on to McChord AFB, Wash., in 1997, holding positions of Director, Wing Weapons and Tactics for the 62nd Airlift Wing and Operations Officer for the 4th Airlift Squadron, a C-141 unit. He guided the all-Air Force soccer team as a player-coach in 1999 and 2000, winning the Armed Forces championship both years. He also coached the allArmed Services team in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, Hill returned to the sidelines at his alma mater. He was an assistant coach from 2001-05 before earning a promotion to associate head coach for the 2006 campaign. During that tenure at AFA, the Falcons were ranked as high as 19th in the country during the 2001 campaign and he helped Marcus Sagastume earn MPSF Co-Player of the Year honors in 2003. Hill, who has over 2,800 flying hours to his credit, holds a master's degree in sports administration from the University of Northern Colorado and retired from the Air Force in April of 2006 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A native of Fleetwood, Pa., Hill, 50, lives in Colorado Springs with his wife, Kathy, and their two sons, Luke (11) and Greg (9).

2010 SEASON PREVIEW As Air Force head soccer coach Doug Hill enters his fourth season at the helm of the Falcons, he has mixed feelings about how to approach the 2010 campaign, but he knows that his young team will have to mature quickly to be successful in the upcoming season. On one hand, five of the team’s top six scorers, including the top four, either graduated or will not return and his starting goalkeeper for the last 10 games transferred during the summer. On the other hand, seven of the 14 players that recorded at least one point last season return and four of the six that played the most minutes are back this fall. Coming off a frustrating 7-8-2 campaign that saw six one-goal defeats, including a shootout loss to Denver in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, the Falcons are looking for a new start after a productive spring season. As many as six sophomores were in the starting lineup during the spring, giving Hill and his players a bright glimpse of the future. “We lost a lot of talent and leadership from last year’s team,” said Hill, who was an assistant coach for 13 years at the Academy before taking over the head coaching duties in 2007. “We will be doing a lot more coaching and teaching than we expected, but I believe we still have a great nucleus coming back that can get us closer to our goal of winning a conference championship.”

Junior defender Eric Wilson

6

Leading the way offensively in 2010 are sophomore Kevin Durr and senior co-captain Kyle Moses. Durr, the only freshman to start all 17 games in 2009, is the team’s leading returning scorer with eight points last season and showed himself as dynamic playmaker with three goals and two assists. He finished third on the team with 31 total shots. Moses, meanwhile, posted six points in ’09 with two goals and two assists, including the gamewinning goal in a 4-0 win over Howard. “Those two guys are going to need to do even more this season,” said Hill. “Kevin is one of the best all-around players we’ve had in a while and will only get better with time and Kyle has the potential to be a real go-to guy in the near future.” Other returning scorers in the midfield include junior Ben Chavez (four points), sophomore Zane Dydasco (four points) and junior John Melcher (three points). Chavez did not score a goal last season but finished third on the team with four assists a year ago, while Dydasco, the second-highest scoring freshman in ’09, scored one of AFA’s most exciting goals in recent history when he notched the lone goal two minutes into overtime to defeat service-academy rival Army, 1-0, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Melcher, meanwhile, scored his first career goal in a 6-3 rout of UMKC last year. Despite the graduation of three-year starter Aaron Eshkenazi, the Falcon defense should be as solid as any group on the field in 2010. Junior co-captain Eric Wilson and sophomore Eric Tise finished first and third, respectively, in minutes played last year for a squad that allowed just 1.4 goals per game. Senior John Tilton returns to the back line after starting eight games in ’09 and scoring the first goal of his career, the game-winner in a 3-0 win over Dayton. “Aaron was the leader of our defense for three years, but it is clear that Eric Wilson can handle that responsibility now,” said Hill. “Within this group of defenders, we will have another very solid core on the back line. Jake Jones played in every game last spring at center back and should have a strong season for us.” Jones should continue in the starting lineup this fall, while fellow sophomores Patrick Compton, John Della Pia and Kevin Rossillon will vie for playing time this season. The goalie position is wide open after sophomore Mike Mauro decided to transfer to Louisville during the summer. Mauro took over the full-time goalkeeping duties in the seventh game of his freshman campaign

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Durr

against fifth-ranked California and posted an impressive 1.44 goals-against average. Seniors Patrick Gould and Fernando SuitoAcuna as well as sophomore Matt Underwood will battle for the starting keeper job despite not seeing any varsity action in their careers. “With Mike leaving, it is time for one of our other keepers to really step up,” Hill commented. “They all received minutes in the spring and it is good for all of them to have the competition for this special position.” The incoming class of freshmen for the 2010 season consists of 12 players. The group includes five players that have played in the Olympic Development Program, five from the United States Soccer Development Academy and two from the USAFA Prep School. The class is highlighted by A.J. Rana (Alameda, CA) and Clint Ramos (Keller, TX). Rana spent two seasons with the Region IV Pool and helped his ODP team to a national runner-up finish, while Ramos, who played for the FC Dallas US Soccer Development Academy team for two seasons, was the MVP of the Prep School last season. In addition, Caleb Downey (Evergreen, CO), Cody Sullivan (Mililani, HI) and Mitch Kim (Sammamish, WA) join the program as highly-regarded recruits. Downey played for the U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy, while Sullivan was a member of the Island/State Pool ODP program for five years. Kim, meanwhile, led his club team to three state championships.

2010 MEN’S SOCCER GUIDE

2010 SEASON PREVIEW “We have a very solid recruiting class coming in this year and I’m looking for some of them to contribute right away," said Hill. "The recruits will need to fill some voids left by the seven seniors that graduated in May. With players coming from Hawaii to Alabama, we will need to blend them in to our system of play right away. We are also excited to have such fine young men join the Air Force soccer family and, in time, become future leaders of our country.” Four teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, including conference opponents Sacramento State and New Mexico, highlight the 2010 schedule. Following a preseason exhibition against Stanford, the Falcons will open their regular season at home for the first time since 2006 with a pair of games at Cadet Soccer Stadium during Labor Day Weekend. Air Force will play Houston Baptist (Friday, Sept. 3) and Cal-Poly (Sunday, Sept. 5) during Parents’ Weekend at the Academy. The Falcons, who have not played two home games during Parents’ Weekend since 2004, will then travel to the West Coast for the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament hosted by San Diego State. Air Force will open against the host Aztecs on Friday, Sept. 10, followed by a match against NCAA Tournament team UC Irvine on Sunday, Sept. 12. Two more home matches follow, the first against Penn State, another ’09 NCAA tourney participant, on Friday, Sept. 17, then Oral Roberts comes to Cadet Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 19. Another pair of games in California, against UC Riverside on Friday, Sept. 24 and Cal. State-Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 26, close out the 2010 nonconference slate. “We are looking forward to a very challenging schedule this fall,” said Hill. “Our non-conference schedule should help us prepare for another tough conference season.” The eight-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation will split into two four-team divisions for the ’10 campaign. Air Force will be in the same division as New Mexico, UNLV and Denver and will play each of those schools in a home-and-home series. The Falcons will play the other four schools, San Jose State, Sacramento State, Seattle University and Cal. State-Bakersfield, just one time for a total of 10 conference games. The MPSF Tournament will begin on Thurs., Nov. 11 in Sacramento, Calif., while the 2010 NCAA Tournament opens on Friday, Nov. 19.

THE MPSF / 2009 REVIEW The MPSF

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women's sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s water polo, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 19th year in 2010-2011 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affirms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today’s tumultuous economic times. In 2010-2011, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men’s and women’s swimming for the first time, while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 86 teams from 38 universities in 12 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men's soccer, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and men's volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualification into NCAA championship events. Joining the Federation for the first-time in women’s swimming are Northern Colorado and University of San Diego, while former MPSF members Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly have also elected to compete for the Federation’s women’s swimming championship. UC Irvine will rejoin the MPSF in women’s indoor track and field after a half-decade absence. During the 2009-2010 season, the MPSF teams won four NCAA championship team titles, bringing the Federation’s total to 61 since the first season of competition in 1992-93. In 2009-10 USC led the charge by winning both the NCAA men’s and women’s water polo titles while Stanford took the NCAA men’s volleyball crown with Oregon’s women’s indoor track and field team winning its first-ever NCAA Championship team title. UCLA won three MPSF titles including men’s and women’s water polo, as well as men’s indoor track and field. Stratton, who graduated in 1997 with a degree in political science, is currently a student at the USAF School of Advanced Air and Space Studies at Maxwell AFB, Ala., where he will earn a Masters of Philosophy in Military Strategy. Upon graduation, Stratton attended Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard AFB, Texas, flying the T-37 and T-38 aircraft. Finishing near the top of his class, he was able to realize his childhood dream of flying fighters by receiving an assignment to the F-15C Eagle. After completing basic F-15C training at Tyndall AFB, Fla., he was assigned to the 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley AFB, Va., in 2000.

pleted his residency in Psychiatry at Wilford Hall Medical Center/Univ. of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, followed by a two-year fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UTHSCSA from 2006-08. Since then, he has been on the staff/faculty at Wilford Hall Medical Center, including his current position as the Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services. He has kept physically active by racing marathons and triathlons for the better part of the last 15 years. From 2000-04, he was on the Air Force Ironman Team that competed at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships and in 2003 he was the top Air Force finisher. Walick and his wife, Krissi, a 1995 graduate of West Point and an Army Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, are the proud parents of two daughters, Adi (4) and Sage (1).

Stratton flew several missions domestically in support of Operation NOBLE EAGLE and in southwest Asia in support of Operations SOUTHERN and NORTHERN WATCH, enforcing the no-fly zones in Iraq. He also led seven combat missions at the commencement of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003. During 2004, Stratton was selected to be the featured character of the IMAX film “Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag.” The movie has been a tremendous public affairs success for the Air Force and is still playing in select IMAX theaters around the world. After attending the USAF Weapons School at Nellis AFB, Nev., in 2005, he served as both a squadron and wing weapons officer at Kadena Air Base, Japan, until June of 2009. He then returned to the states to attend Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, which he completed in June of 2010. Stratton and his wife, Tara, have a three-year old son, Jack, and are anxiously awaiting the addition of a baby girl in October.

2010 MEN’S SOCCER GUIDE

THE USAFA The United States Air Force Academy offers a fouryear program of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. COURSE OF STUDY Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

FACULTY COMPOSITION The majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master's degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAM The Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year.

MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in United States society as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required threeweek program during cadets' second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available.

NOMINATIONS Nominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional sponsor or by meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of competition established by law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304 Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million. Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dr. Hans J. Mueh and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, he has the department on course to become a federally chartered non-profit organization which will lead to more fund-raising opportunities. Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endowment and the announcement of an Indoor Training Facility that broke ground in the summer of 2010. The $15 million facility will be completed in early 2011.

Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his seventh year as the director of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy's faculty athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association. Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football (2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports. In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in an NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team won three straight conference championships and made three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey Association. The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program has posted back-to-back eight-win seasons and qualified for bowl games since, marking the first time since 1990-92 Air Force has been to a bowl three straight years. Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an internal/external model that has streamlined resources

GOAIRFORCEFALCONS.COM

Mueh has also been active within the conference and the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leadership committees. He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship. Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy's eighth graduating class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master's degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to the Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semipro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals to the Colorado state title in 1971. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973. After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy's representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men's golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

Director of Athletics Dr. Hans Mueh is in his seventh season as the Director of Athletics at the Air Force Academy. Mueh, a 1966 graduate of the Academy, was a two-year letterwinner on the men’s soccer team and still holds the school record for most saves in one game with 30. He set the record on Oct. 1, 1965 against North Carolina, then matched it the following game against Benedictine.

AIR FORCE ATHLETICS Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy's. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAAsanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two nonNCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading. The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons battle in the MWC against teams from Brigham Young, New Mexico, Colorado State, San Diego State, TCU, Wyoming, Utah and UNLV. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams. The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 16 times, which is more than either Army or Navy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of more than 9,000. Clune Arena seats 5,834. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. The department’s newest facility is the Indoor Training Facility (pictured above), which will be completed in early 2011.

CADET SOCCER STADIUM

A vision in 1983 became a reality on Aug. 29, 1995. That date marked the dedication of the Air Force Academy’s new soccer complex followed by men’s and women’s exhibition games. The first phase of the construction began in May, 1995. It included the new natural grass field, permanent seating for 1,000, a press box and a fence encompassing the entire complex. Beneath the press box are home and visiting team locker rooms. The beginning of the 1998 season saw the second phase of the stadium project completed. Added to the already impressive facility were completed locker rooms, with showers and a changing area. Other improvements included permanent public restrooms, concrete pads for additional seating on the east side and a walkway between the east and west seating areas. In the spring of 2003, permanent lights were added with three banks of lights on each side of the field. The vision of former head coaches Lou Sagastume and Marty Buckley and current head coach Doug Hill was put into action following the 1993 season. That year, the men’s team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. The 1993 team, ranked 23rd in the nation, had the opportunity to host an NCAA Tournament game and have the home field advantage. However, because the old soccer facility didn’t meet the NCAA requirements, the Falcons had to travel to Omaha, Neb., to play the No. 1 ranked Creighton STADIUM FACTS Bluejays.
